Beautiful Nail Art

BEAUTY SECRETS DECODED

N

ail art has always been in fashion, as Christmas and New Year is approaching here is an easy way to do your nail art yourself and leave a great impression.

Material required: Transparent nail paint Dry glitter dust (any color) Tissue Paper Coffee Spoon

Method:

Apply two coat of base coat (this is very important! Double coat helps the glitter dust to stick well also it will make it so much easier to take off the glitters later).

Take sum glitter on a coffee spoon and dust it on your nail (do one nail at a time, also keep a tissue paper beneath your hand to collect the fallen glitter)

Finish all nails one by one and wait for few minutes to get the glitter settle well.

Apply a transparent top coat to protect the glitter from rubbing off (If the surface is still rough with glitters, apply more top coat.)

The thing you will love the most about using glitter powder is that it last long, it usually last for about two weeks, so it’s perfect for a long, stress-free holiday. And you can mix two colors of glitters or use different color glitter for each nail, the possibilities are endless.

Her passion for skin, hair and slimming has won her several accolades, but receiving ‘Woman entrepreneur of the year’ at the 5th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Business Leadership Awards 2012, Mumbai last month, has given her all new recognition. There is so much pollution these days compared to last few years, what can we do to keep our skin healthy and dirt free for both male and female? It’s important to recognise your skin type and choose your skin care products accordingly. Clean skin at least twice a day and moisturise. A Toner helps remove excess dirt and prepares the skin for even penetration

of other skin care products. Oily skin gets greasy and accumulates dirt more which cause breakouts, blackheads, whiteheads, so you should choose lotions, serums and salicylic acid based products will help keep the pores clean. Hydrafacial treatment is a good

What treatment or creams do you suggest for pimple scars? Pimple scars are deep wounds in the skin therefore Creams offer little benefit. Pixel or Fractional laser treatments and dermaroller treatments work by inducing collagen production which lifts the scar and rejuvenates the skin. But it is very important that you consult with a dermatologist and understand the necessary benefits and possible side effects before going for any treatment. Fractional RF is a new technology that is suitable for Asians and dark skinned people with no risks of causing pigmentation. Winters are fast approaching, and so is dry skin, how do we deal with it? The skin care regime may need to be altered as the skin tends to be drier in winters. Moisturising becomes an important step but along with this mild exfoliation of the superficial dry flaking cells gives an even tone and healthy glow to the skin. Scrubs can be used at home

or salons but deeper exfoliation can be done with skin polishing/microdermabrasion treatments in your dermatologist’s clinic. What are Milia or Dpi’s? What are the causes and treatment for it? Milia are tiny pearly white bumps on the skin present just under the surface. It happens when keratin gets trapped in small pockets in the layers of skin. Usually they resolve by themselves in a few months and can be left alone as they are harmless. They can also be removed for cosmetic reasons by a dermatologist or using a cryotherapy. What is the reason behind dark circles and puffiness beneath the eyes? What is the remedy? Dark circles can result from genes, lack of sleep, and hollowness under the eyes causing shadows, smoking, alcohol consumption, bad lifestyle, from certain diseases like thyroid or could be multifactorial. Dark circles can be treated with peels, some lightening creams with glycolic or kojic acid, Vitamin C creams, laser photofacials or a combination of these. If they are due to loss of fat or hollowness, dermal filler injections can be used to correct the defect. There is peptide enriched products that help to deal with this as also sheep placental and snake venom serums, which all

claim to do the job.

WELLBEING

Eye bags can happen from medical problems like bad sinuses, kidney problems, thyroid problems etc as also from lack of sleep, excessive drinking, rubbing eyes too much. To correct this, a visit to your doctor is necessary to identify the cause. Using something cold under the eyes like cucumber slices, cold packs can help and there are some creams that can be prescribed by your dermatologist. What do one do, to maintain and get healthy skin for men and women? Choose right skin care products for your skin type with the help of your dermatologist. Choose foods rich in antioxidants like berries, colourful fruits, veggies, green tea etc. Taking an antioxidant supplement daily also helps if you are unable to fulfil the antioxidant requirement by food. If you have oily skin, avoid greasy makeup and use good mineral make-up instead. As we age we develop dull complexion and uneven skin tone due to the influences of pollution, sunlight etc. Skin treatments such as peels, microdermabrasion, and laser facials helps get the glow back and improve skin tone. Use a sunscreen everyday in all seasons to protect skin from sunlight to avoid early ageing signs such as wrinkles, pigmentation.

TULIP

cleanup programme that has several steps and does cleaning, exfoliation, extraction of blackheads, whiteheads and hydration. It is important to use a sunscreen to protect skin from harsh UV radiation. It is also very important to remove makeup at night before retiring to bed and allow skin to breathe.

CAMPUS BUZZ

THE SPIRIT OF SANTA!

Sheena, Raksha, Nihitha & Anvitha

M

any colleges in the City celebrate the spirit of Christmas, giving their students a chance to be part of this festival of love, where we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, understand the true value of humanity and the joy of spreading happiness. Everyone has lot of fun, there are games organized, stalls put up, the campus is decorated with bells and Christmas trees and everything that sets the mood of Christmas. To add some sweetness to the occasion, carols are sung, Christmas cake is cut, and of course what is Christmas without the Santa and some gifts. It is total fun celebrating Christmas where everyone equally takes part in the festivity. Students of Villa Marie College share their thoughts.

26 DECEMBER, NOVEMBER,2012 2012

Sheena

Christmas is vibrant, and full of enthusiasm, we wait for this the whole year as it brings the week long celebrations, everyone is part of this in some way or other, the story of Christ is retold every year but never stops to fascinate us, there are stalls, the college is decorated and the whole Christmas mood is set. We have a gala end to the week long celebrations with arrival of Santa and loads of gifts for everyone. And last but not the least it brings lots of holidays which is my favorite part.

Raksha

Our college celebrates Christmas every year and that week has been seen to be very colorful and full of events. Every year there are different and interesting themes, Dances and plays are conducted in which almost everyone takes part, the week ends with a dance party in the college followed by a winter break.

Nihitha

Christmas celebration in our college is the fun time for the girls. We celebrate the arrival of this day many days ahead. There are different dress codes every day, and everyone looks their best. And the best thing I like about it is Santa who comes in with gifts and chocolates for everyone, and takes the spirit of happiness and joy to a whole new level.

Anvitha

We villa Marians celebrate Christmas during the villa festa. The whole week is full of celebration, every day is unique, with dress codes we love to follow, many cultural activists are organized, we enjoy each and every moment of it. It is totally fun and refreshing.

How did you happen to come to Hyderabad?

I had come to Hyderabad on a casual occasion, and I happened to meet Dr. D. Rama Naidu garu, a prominent personality of Indian film world with a standing of over 50 years. And then there was no looking back for me after that. I started my carrier as an administrator, and then was involved in organizing various high profile events and functions. I was always surrounded by glamour and glitz, be it celebrities, politicians or socialites. And then I met my husband who was from a totally different field and settled in Hyderabad. I was also appointed as member of Central Board for Film Certification (Censor Board Member), where I have been serving for six years with distinction.

How and when did you decide to start this business?

I was a housewife initially, but I always had that burning desire to do something. And the entrepreneur in me just became restless and I finally decided to do something. Being a part of glamour world I always observed what made people tick & look beautiful. That is when I started ‘MIRRORS’. It was first of its kind in Hyderabad when it was launched and since then many had come up, I feel like I have started a trend in beauty industry. My small salon has blossomed into a mega spa & salon in less than a decade and now functioning from two centers, employing hundreds of employees from India and abroad. And now I am going to start a professional beauty & hair academy with international standards to guide new professionals. In pursuit of my career in Beauty industry, I have studied various courses in fitness, sports and courses related to hair, beauty and wellness internationally. I have also attended many seminars and workshops relating to this industry. I keep myself abreast of latest trends and developments in beauty and fashion world.

“Hard Work & Discipline is my mantra to Success”. What has been the USP of your business?

The greatest USP is my self involvement, I personally look into everything that goes on in my salon and make sure everything is perfect.

Who has been your inspiration? There are lot people at different levels of my life who inspired me. I take a lot of inspiration from Sri. N.Chandra Babu Naidu for his excellence quality of hard work. CENTER STAGE

In the modern world, where we today have several modes of entertainment like you tube, television, films, etc. Theatre continues to live on and thrive. Theatres and plays are fast catching up in Hyderabad. It is said that a drama requires three things - script, actors and audience. Hyderabad has its own niche audience for theatre, although Hyderabad is not known for its theatre and drama culture, today this art is growing and spreading like fire and because of this, the city is seeing a variety of plays and theatre groups performing.

T

his time of the year is an exciting time for the theatre community in Hyderabad. The theatre groups are all geared up to

I aspire to be an actor so theatre basically was an experiment for me. It was like testing new waters. Performing live always gives me a high. So, Curtain Call Productions with Nader Rehaan at the helm of affairs gave me the perfect opportunity. I’ve done various dances and other stage shows so performing live in front of an audience without any cuts at one go was memorable. Though the added pressure of getting direct reviews is there, but the end result and appreciation make it worthwhile. It is the purest form of acting and that is why there is a revival of sorts at least as far as the theatre scene in Hyderabad is concerned. After all, everything a performer craves for is attention, applause and glory! -Vaibhav Mehta, Theatre artist 34 DECEMBER, 2012

put up their annual fests in the city. The first to start up was Hyderabad Children’s theatre fest organized by Vaishali Bisht. The fest aimed to open up young minds to theatre and literary forms. The three day festival was kick started by “Laal Pencil”, and also featured literary plays based on Karadi Tales and “Aditi and Friends”. The fest was filled with music, songs, dance and also taught valuable lessons of life. The city saw one of its biggest theatre festivals that is the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Festival (QABTF). This festival is considered as celebration of world class theatre in Hyderabad. Every year, theatre lovers and national luminaries from various parts of the world, salute late Qadir Ali Baig’s dedication and pay him a tribute gathering at Hyderabad. The festival brought directors and performers like Lilette Dubey, Naseerudin Shah, Mahesh Dattani, Rajat Kapur and Rakesh Bedi

and LIFT theatre from South Africa. The theme of the festival was comedy and showcased a variety of black comedies, situational comedies, puppet theatre, monologues, dance theatre and street theatre. The fest began with an amazing performance by Rakesh Bedi playing 24 characters in a 120 minute monologue called ‘Massage’. Other performances included ‘Nothing like Lear’ by Rajat Kapur, ‘Comic Timing’, ‘Aakash’, ‘Martial

Blitz’, ‘My name is Habib’, ‘Where did I leave my veil’, ‘Made for Women’, and many more, with a finale performance called ‘Moteram ka Satyagraha’. As a different event Hyderabad based theatre group Dramanon, performed ‘Seven Uncommon Dialogues’, it consisted of seven short plays and each play had two characters. The plays were humorous and were based on dark and situational comedy. Soon coming up, is ‘Salt N Pepper’ presented by Ballentine. If you have a taste for fine plays then this is your league. The play shows the complexities of men and women relationships in today’s life. The play consists of ten stories shown in a time span of ten minutes. The format this year is unique as there are ten stories of ten minutes each revolving around ten lives. The play brings in big names like Mandira Bedi, Darshan Jariwalla, Kuki Grewal and Vikram Kochhar. The play will be held on

For me acting gives me the opportunity to reach out to my personality. All through growing period of my life I wanted to grow into different personalities and acting provides me that opportunity. It helps me act different characters and also helps me grow my personality. It helps me plays characters and act in ways which I would never do in my personal life. Acting liberates me and gives me a sense of freedom. I started off with a work shop with Samahaara and then did a play with Torn Curtains, now I actively do several plays. – Laxmi Vishwanathan, Theatre Artist

Being a movie buff, I happened to watch a play once for the first time and I realized a play is a very intense affair! Without any retakes and scenic locations we are still taken to completely different world. The director creates a whole new environment which carries us and involves us into the story and gives it realism. In a play an actor communicates at a personal level, unmoved by the reactions he performs to his best ability. I am a regular watcher of the plays that are performed at Lamakaan. I try not to miss any of the plays and I loved Dominic Wesley in most recent. Vishal Maheshwari Chartered Accountant 2nd Dec at Shilpakala Vedika from 7.30 pm onwards. Another big festival which is going to be held in December is by the theatre group Samahaara. The festival is going to be held from 8th to 16th December. The festival is uniquely recognized as it encourages only city groups. The same fest had a short film screening two years back and a rock band playing last year, this year the festival is going to be purely into theatre. Theatre, today is making a comeback in both towns and cities and is becoming a huge part of Hyderabad as well. With the city known for its culture and philosophy, the performing arts are here to flourish.

I love watching plays as it is very relaxing to sit back and watch a play. Unlike a movie, in a play there are no retakes and everyone performs live and that adds a new thrill. One of my favorite plays ‘No Heaven’. Each scene established the paranormal fears of a man with aesthetic presentation and advanced technology. I have also attended the recently held Qadir Ali Baig Festival and I try to attend it every year and take a pleasure in watching the plays performed in the Fest. - Neha Khan, Student

I started off with theatre with torn curtains and I really enjoyed playing my character in Uncommon Dialogues. The play was totally about the guy where my character was dominant. I loved performing in Uncommon Dialogues as it was all about dark comedy, and what is life without comedy! Theatre is dynamic, practical and physical, it involves emotions, refines verbal communication skills and every act introduces to a new self. There are no retakes in theatre and performing for a live audience is completely a different thing. Stage is not new to me, I danced as a child, I am a trained classical dancer and today am glad to get back on stage with theatre. Acting is liberating, first, the creative experience, and when completed has a cathartic effect. Ganesh Nallari, Fashion Designer and Theatre Artist DECEMBER, 2012 35

I

t’s time to take down your old, tattered curtains. Never underestimate the power of a new pair of curtains. Not only will they give your home a fresh new look, they’ll also keep it lovely and toasty on those cold winter nights. But good curtains don’t come cheap so it’s worth doing a bit of research before you hit the shops.

Beautiful Curtains

Curtains aren’t just additional decor, they are functional too. When choosing yours, ask yourself these important questions: Are they needed for privacy? Do I want them to help keep out the heat, prevent drafts, or allow the room to stay cool? How much light should they let in or block? If your curtains are for bedroom, you might choose a heavy material which won’t allow a single ray to spoil your sleep. Alternatively, you might like sheer fabrics for those rooms where you want to let in as much light as possible, for example, a kitchen area or attic window. Blinds are great for windows where you need a variety of functions: pull them up for an unobstructed window, open them for a partial view, or close them fully to keep outside eyes away. Readymade or bespoke? The first thing you need to decide is whether to have curtains made or buy them off the shelf. If you're in a rush, readymade curtains are quick and easy. Made to measure curtains are pricier but the sky is the limit to choose from when it comes to the designs and colors. If you're thinking about making your own curtains, the golden rule is always be generous with the fabric. Nothing looks worse than skimpy curtains. Check and double check measurements before cutting the fabric. To line or not to line? As well as the design, you'll need to decide if your curtains should have a lining or not. A lining protects the curtain from dirt on the window and sunlight which may fade 36 DECEMBER, 2012

the fabric. It helps keep more light out and can actually provide extra insulation - which might in turn reduce your electricity bills! On the other hand, unlined curtains are easier to wash, lighter to handle, and better for rooms you wish to keep cool. They are practical in areas such as the kitchen or bathroom where added steam and moisture necessitates regular washing.

Latest looks Current trends are veering away from fussy swags and flounces towards a more tailored approach. Next has a huge selection of eyelet curtains designed to flatter contemporary furniture. Hung from a pole, eyelet styles produce a sleeker look than traditional pencil pleat curtains and there are no fiddly hooks or clips to worry about. Pelmets are also back in fashion. A flat pelmet covered in silk looks surprisingly contemporary, just the thing for a formal dining room.

LIFESTYLE

Long or short? Whether you choose sill length or floor length curtains is really a matter of personal taste, although floor length styles do have a more luxurious feel. Sill-length drapes cost less, and are popular in bathrooms and kitchens. If you want to draw attention to your windows, order more fabric and hang your curtain pole 15-30 cms above their frames. This makes your windows look much larger than they really are. Allow your drapes to hang to the floor past the bottom of the window frames to add even more height to the illusion!

cosy. For kids' bedrooms, blackout lining should hopefully ensure a good night's sleep for them - and you!

Plain or patterned? Take a good look at your scheme before deciding on a pattern. Too many different designs can create distracting effect. For a relaxed ambience, opt for either patterned curtains with plain walls, or vice versa. You can always dress up plain curtains with beautiful beaded tie backs or colored glass poles.

Which fabric to choose? Look for good quality, heavyweight fabrics like linen blends or woven jacquards. Over time, cheap material may go shiny. Transform a jaded bedroom by hanging luscious velvet or silk curtains, and then finish with a buttersoft fluffy rug – simply divine! Linings are almost as important as the curtain fabric. A quality lining will give budget materials a longer lease of life. Choose thermal lining to keep out the chill in a draughty room, or interlining which provides an extra layer of padding to make curtains super-thick and

TOP TIPS •

When buying a curtain pole, allow for it to extend beyond the window at either side by 10-20cm so that curtains can be drawn right back.

For a modern look, combine curtains with a roller blind that either contrasts or coordinates with the curtain fabric.

Vertical striped curtains trick the eye into making a ceiling appear taller perfect for a small room.

Get Stylish As The Party Season Begins!!!

With Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties on the horizon, it’s the season to be stylish! It has been a fashionable year in every sense for Hyderabad. Christmas & NYE- aka the biggest night of the year, is only a matter of days away and with it comes the usual last minute panic. What am I doing? Where am I going? And without doubt the most important one of all – what shall I WEAR? Now you can put all your worries aside, Satpreet Kaur bring you the ULTIMATE New Years Style Guide exclusively for their readers to take you from sofa to dance floor.

Dresses

Selecting the right dress is one of the most important elements of a great New Year’s night it’s in this party dress you’ll be rocking all night long. Once you have an idea of how your dress is going to look, everything else will pretty much come together. Dresses that feature sequins, beads, and crystals are all in for this New Year as these sparkly styles are perfect for standing out in the dark. Make sure you choose a style that goes with your body type and shows off your favorite feature. Along with sequin dresses, other styles you can choose from include one shoulder, body con, backless, and strapless dresses or gowns.

Getting ready for New Years can be just as fun as going out on New Year’s Eve its one of the best nights to show off your personal style. One of the best ways to achieve it is by actually trying out looks for NYE this way when the New Years countdown begins you’ll be ready. You can try simple new looks like a new part, bangs, or even just wearing your hair different. Or you can be bold and try a new haircut, adding a few layers, a new color, or even highlights. Hair accessories are big this season, you can add a small lace hat, a feather headband, or unique beaded hair accessories. Create styles that feature big curls, loose waves, bouffant, and French twists. You can even add clipin’s to your locks that feature, glitter, or bright colors for a fun New Years feel.

Makeup

New Year’s Eve is the ideal night for going all out. Here are some top beauty tips to help you get both glam and gorgeous. You have several great options to choose from when it comes to makeup – whether you want to go bold and colorful or polished but natural. Smoky Eyes - a metallic smoky eye for parties , or using an eye shadow duo with a black and a metallic shade like gunmetal gray, silver or bronze can never go wrong. Red Lips- anyone can wear a red lipstick, you just need to find the right shade according to your skin tone, red immediately transforms and gives your face a polished look. But remember when you are going for red lipstick try going for nude or natural look for the rest of your face. Sparkle and Shimmer- go for a little bit of shimmer on the cheeks, lips or eyes (but not all three at once). Apply metallic shimmer and sparkle to the inner corners of your eyes to give you a look that is “instantly party ready”. Also apply shimmery powders and creams to arms and legs for a flattering glow. Just don’t get carried away because too much body shimmer can make you look sweaty. Kashish Owner of juice salon Kashish suggests that as winter has already started keeping your skin, moisturized and hydrated is very important or your skin will end up dry and patchy. For hairstyling, crimping and out curls are in, where as for makeup, dark lipsticks and good eye makeup will do the trick for this party season. 38 DECEMBER, NOVEMBER, JULY, 2012 2012 2012

Shoes are most important, because you will be spending most of the night by going around meeting people, and dancing all nights. When it comes to finding the perfect look for New Years you can’t really go wrong. Play around with pops of color worn on your feet, sparkle things up with glitter heels, or get wild with studs or animal prints. You can choose from stilettos, wedges, pumps, and even little bootie boots to name a few, just be sure they are comfortable.

Do Babysit Your Drink No matter what you decide to drink, keep any eye on your beverage. In large crowd it is very easy for someone to quickly slip something in your drink. And for any reason if you need to keep your drink aside, don’t drink back from the same one, make sure you get a new one. DON’T Kill Your Feet Your feet should look killer on these Eves, but they shouldn’t be killed by the shoes you wear that night. Comfort is key since you’ll probably be standing on your feet all night, so wear short heels, wedges instead of 6-inch heels. Rub on some anti-blister cream. If you don’t have any anti-blister cream, roll some deodorant on your feet and be sure to bring some Band-Aids for your friends. They’re probably going to need some by the end of the night. Honey Jain Guha

She is extremely passionate, ambitious, no nonsense and straight forward kind of person, born into an affluent Marwari Jain family in Agartala (Tripura) and she was from the very beginning an ambitious person. She moved to Pune for her further studies at Symbiosis college, and it is there where she met the love of her life, and now husband Rehan Guha. There were a few hiccups initially as it was an inter caste marriage but once her parents met Rehan and his family everything fell in place. The strangest part is, while after marriage it is the girl who shifts her base to that of her husband, but in her case, she has been blessed to have a husband who shifted his base to Hyderabad. Now how many women can boast of luck like that? Why did you choose this specific line to start your business? Well I am a partner in a fashion label called JINI’S founded by my elder sister Jini Jain. Starting small in Kolkata, moving base to pune and taking the label forward, I started it in Hyderabad exactly 3 years back. Our forte lies in funky, ready to wear concept saree’s and half saree’s. I don’t think I could have done anything else, even as a child I remember I would only play games that involved wearing sarees, I would only dress my dolls up in saree’s (laughs). My parents are from the textiles industry so I literally grew up seeing fabrics. Perhaps that’s why in spite of not having any formal training in fashion designing I have been doing pretty well for myself. What would you consider your greatest achievement till date? Well the biggest achievement till date would be the fact that I shifted to Hyderabad all on my own, without knowing a single soul in the city just on the virtue of talent and unconditional support from family. I am sure I will achieve much more in life but this is going to be THE biggest achievement of my life. The fact that my parents were supportive of my decision to shift alone to Hyderabad is my biggest personal achievement. What do you enjoy the most about what you do? 48

Well the fact that I enjoy the most would be undoubtedly the trust your clients place in you. If a person thinks you can help them look better then there is no greater feeling than that. You get to meet so many new people every day, it itself is a big exposure. And then I get to wear the best of clothes, which definitely wins a lot of brownie points too. How does being an entrepreneur effect your relation with family and friends? Being an entrepreneur makes your family and friends take you more seriously because they witness the amount of hard work you put in your work. Also they value your time and commitments and with time you learn the fine art of balancing between professional & personal lives so yeah no negative effects at all. What do you enjoy most as much as your work? After a hard day work, there is nothing more enjoyable than catching up with your people who do not judge you, accept you with all your flaws and who have no vested interest in you. So, yes, if there is anything I enjoy as much I enjoy my work, it is spending time with my husband and my friends who are my family here, and doing just about nothing. And since I am very fond of dancing it is either my favorite pub or just hanging out at friends place over dinner, movies or just a workout at the gym together. What are your plans for this New Year and Christmas? Since both our families stay in Pune, we are going to spend New Year & Christmas with our families. We will be having a family reunion and I think that’s the best New Year plan I can have. One place where you would want to spend this new years or Christmas, with your loved one or family? It definitely has to be a nice quiet getaway like Prana resorts (Koh samui) from the hustle bustle of everyday life, with no phone calls, no agenda and definitely no deadlines. Advice to young Entrepreneurs? First and foremost understand that an entrepreneur must have nerves of steel, as flowery as the term sounds it has its own share of ups and downs and uncertainties. Have faith in your project and in yourself, and sky is the limit. Secondly, you must have a mentor, learn from their mistakes. if at all you commit mistakes, commit new ones (at least be original). I credit all my success to my sister Jini Jain who is also my mentor. Whenever I am stuck in a situation I seek answers by thinking what would Jini do to get out of it & it always works, and lastly keep your family happy, you can’t be a successful entrepreneur if your personal life is not happy. Keep it simple and keep complications out!

COVER STORY

She is a person full of energy, values honesty and is sensitive & caring individual. She speaks of her mind and is a very frank person. She loves her independence, yet is grounded to her values, and like every other young woman loves to be cared and pampered. Born and brought up in Hyderabad, Sharavani has a bachelor’s degree, she is happily married and blessed with a child. Owner of COLARZ Beauty Studio, which helps people project a holistic external image. Why did you chose this specific line to start your business? I chose this specific line of business, because I have apt skills, aptitude and sphere of influence, required for it. Apart from it, the fact that this is one of the sunshine sectors in India and the projected growth is phenomenal in this sector, especially with rising income levels, broadening aspirations and a culture of visual appeal catching up, I think it is great. What would you consider your greatest achievement till date? My ability to create an organization that is able to provide employment to the semiskilled and skilled people, especially women. I draw immense satisfaction and it is a source of pride to me that I have been able to help so many young people, stand on their feet and find a meaningful career, especially given the fact that at a point I myself had dealt a ‘not so favorable’ life, in the beginning. What do you enjoy the most about what you do? I enjoy helping people gain that little extra edge and helping them project the right external image, be it the people, I have employed, or the customers that we help. It is a tool available to enhance self-confidence and is very rewarding experience when this fact gets acknowledged by my staff or customers. As a bonus, it is an enriching experience to understand various moti-

vations that drive people to make the choices that they make. How does being an entrepreneur effect your relation with family and friends? My journey of becoming and entrepreneur started as a result of my strong preference for independence and a drive to achieve self-reliance for social and economic status. I don’t see this as effecting my relation with family or friends, in fact, it is what defines me and gives me an identity. As it may sound ironic, but the fact is that my entrepreneurship is an attempt purely aimed at balancing my career aspirations, identity, family, friends and life aspirations. It is hard for me to think that I could have balanced all these, if I were not as independent as I am today. What do you enjoy most as much as your work? I like partying. As they say ‘when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade and try to find someone whose life has given them vodka, and have a party’. What are your plans for this New Year and Christmas? I prefer to stay relaxed, take some time off and soak myself in the overall holiday/festive spirit. One place where you would want to spend this new years or Christmas, with your loved one or family? For New Years I would love to spend time in some nice secluded Island resort. Which specific Island, hmm…that is something I would like to keep it to myself! Advice to young Entrepreneurs? Rather than an advice, it is more of an observation and a tip I would like to share from my experience, with women entrepreneurs. I think women entrepreneurs tend to be modest and I would encourage them to think big and look at expanding their horizons. Don’t be afraid to ask others for help and gather a group of people around you that can advice you on certain subjects which are relatively new for you.

A Hearty Affair! S

he says we are alike, but Koyal is talkative and Anup is shy. This young couple fought every odd to be what they are today - Happily Married! Tulip on a casual rendezvous with Koyal and Anup Chandak brings you there story. Koyal I was always bubbly and happy go lucky girl. I did my schooling from Geetanjali, and I have an M Com. degree from OU. I make friends very easily. And that’s how I met Anup. One of our common friends introduced us and we instantly became friends. Initially we were just good friends but with time we got to know more about each other and that’s how we started dating and soon decided to tie the knot. Anup I like the child in her, she brings life to everything and everyone around. That’s what made me fall in love with her. We dated for 6 years, Koyal likes to say it as a long courtship. And then we decided to get married. It wasn’t smooth sailing, when we decide to get married. Our parents had conflicted views, in spite of the fact that we both belonged to Marwari families her parents didn’t agree. Koyal It was like a typical filmy scene, where a girl’s parents say no, and then the guy comes home, meet the girls parents, convinces them how happy their daughter will be with him, and then like a true hero wins everybody’s heart. And when we finally got a yes from both

Because it is usually me who plans things and surprises. Like his last birthday where I had invited all his friends and gave him a surprise party, while he wondered all day that I wasn’t planning anything special for him. What changed after your marriage? Koyal Nothing, it bought us more close to each other, the understanding is immense, and we are more committed to each other. But with marriage comes a lot of responsibilities, less freedom, and we need to keep our partner and family’s needs before we make any decisions. But I have been blessed with an amazing family so I think I am really happy and marrying Anup was the best decision of my life. Anup I totally agree, but what is best, is that Koyal balances her family and social life perfectly. She is a good daughter in-law, wife and a great friend. She loves socializing and partying and I support her in whatever make her happy is. She has a great sense of fashion, and carries herself very well. She looks good in everything, weather its western or Indian, she carries it off with great charm and grace. She gets along well with everyone. She makes everyone comfortable in her company and has good sense of humor. the families, we got married, and that’s where the new and beautiful chapter of our married life began. Who asked out whom? Koyal (After a lot of thinking) No one, we had been friends for so long that when we started dating it was mutual. Oh my God, I realize now that he actually never proposed me. Well Anup you will have to plan up something and propose me soon, I seriously can’t believe you never proposed me in 9 years. Anup (Laughs) Well I will plan something for sure, how about on our anniversary this month? Koyal Now, that will be something to look out for.

Koyal The best thing about us is that we think alike, it’s very rare to find someone who will just read your mind and understand what you feel without me uttering a word. We share a great compatibility. He is very caring and very much of a family person, he is always there for his family, not only his immediate family but also the extended one, and he is there for them in an instant of a phone call and really cares for them which I really respect. Anup There is great understanding, trust, and bonding between us which is important for any couple to survive their relationship. Our likes and dislikes are same to great extent. She has always been by my side, be it sorrows or happiness. I know that no matter what she will always stand by me. The great Goa obsession Koyal We love travelling, we take a trip abroad every once in a year but we love Goa more than anywhere else, I think we take a trip to Goa almost every 2 to 3 months. The beaches, the weather, partying all night and the amazing casinos. I can stay as long as possible and not even get bored of it. It gives us a little

time away from work and family, to relax and spend some more time with each other.

Rapid Fire Favorite movie you enjoy watching together over and over again? Koyal - Anup : Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam. Who makes up after a fight? Koyal : Anup always. What do u call each other? Anup : Sona Koyal : Anup One thing u like the most about each other? Koyal : Anup is very caring. Anup : I like the child in her. One thing you hate about each other? Anup : Koyal’s obsession for her blackberry Koyal : He is short tempered Greatest passion you both share? Travelling One thing that keeps your relation going. Koyal - Anup : Love, undoubtedly. Your vision of a perfect society. Koyal : I think the way society has molded itself, comparing from past 5 to 6 years, it is in a really very good place there is lot of socializing, where people can meet, share opinions and lot more. We like it the way it is now.

Cross-Over? SUV? Or An Off Roader?

AUTOMOBILES

Well it’s everything you want There are few cars limited or exclusive for few segments or an age-group, but there are some cars where age or the segment plays no role. These are cars for everyone. You would definitely want to drive it at some point, even if it’s not the first or second car in your garage. And that is why we bring to you some cars that really matter.

Audi Q3 With the success of the Q7 and Q5 models, it is inevitable that Audi would introduce a smaller entry-level to the Q range. Adding to this the growing demand in small off-roaders , Audi Q3 4x4 was bound to happen at some point. However, while this might be the angle from the marketing department, the fact that the manufacturer had no direct rival to the BMW X1 must have also played a major part in the cars arrival. It’s a much better looking model compared to its closest competitor and the prestige that comes with the name should mean that this smallest Q model will be a sales success. There’s the choice of two-or-four wheel drive as well as diesel engines directed at affordable running costs and performance focused petrol versions. Like many models from the range it still loses out to the BMW when it comes to driver engagement. However, there’s no arguing over the premium experience and the Q3 is a very nice place to spend lots of time in. If comfort and quality takes precedent over performance and involvement then this is your best choice, but if you crave more driving experience then you might want to take a look at the ‘other’ German powerhouse. 54 DECEMBER, 2012

This is the German company’s fourth X model - the BMW X1 - is also the smallest, yet retains much of the practicality and spaciousness of its larger counterparts. It’s slightly shorter than a 3-series which makes it easy to maneuver and park, especially in town, and yet still has impressive space for passengers in the back as well as a large and useful boot. It’s available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive (xDrive) while all the engines are impressively efficient and economical, with diesel, giving the X1 low running costs. There are criticisms, including some unusually below-par plastics in the cabin and a rather notchy gearshift on manual models, but decent levels of standard equipment, the usual BMW build quality and superb refinement make the X1 a sound choice.

Mercedes-Benz GLK

Probably you have never heard of it at all. Mercedes-Benz has been silent in getting a car that competes with the above. Mercedes-Benz have been sitting quietly, thinking and waiting for the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 storm to come down. The Mercedes-Benz GLK is launching a compact version of the already in demand model GL-Class which is called as the GLK class. Here is an insight: The standard features of the Mercedes-Benz GLK350 Base include 3.5L V-6 302hp engine, 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), side seat mounted airbags, curtain 1st and 2nd row overhead airbags, driver knee airbag, airbag occupancy sensor, Baby Smart airbag child seat sensor, Thematic automatic air conditioning, 19” aluminum wheels, cruise control, ABS and driveline traction control, and a stability control. GIZMOS Leica V-Lux 40

Is Leica V-Lux 40-worth it? Or Not! Gone are the days when we had the bulky SLR to show-off and click best in quality pictures. The era has changed, we as consumer want more, don’t we? Well, if your answer is yes, here is a compact, travel zoom camera from the legendary Leica. With so many compact cameras with amazing in built features we really don’t know if we should put the moolah at which this is priced. Leica V-Lux 40 the predecessor has the same features and almost the same quality. The only thing that differs is the body, but do we really care? The pocketfriendly body of the Leica V-Lux 40 couples a 1/2.33-inch type, 14.1 effective megapixel, RGB-filtered MOS image sensor, and a Leica DC Vario-Elmar branded 20x optical zoom lens. In 35mm equivalents, the 40’s lens provides everything from a generous 24mm wide angle, to a whopping 480mm telephoto. As you’d expect with this much telephoto reach, there’s an optical image stabilization system included. Continuous shooting is possible at a rate of around ten full-resolution frames per second. But with its predecessor being the same and with so many other options this newbie is a thumbs down.

Microsoft Surface, The God of tablet is back! Microsoft Surface, a King that was wounded is back, not with a bang but to bang the existing kings -The iPad, the army of android tablets and others. If you’re expecting the sleek aluminum curves of the iPad, you’re going to be disappointed. The Surface tablet comes in a dark titanium matte black-style shade and has a far more industrial look and feel, but does look ,built to last and able to withstand more than a few knocks. The 1366x768 pixel resolution and 148ppi is not quite in the realms of the iPad 4 (2048x1536 and 264ppi) and the Nexus 10 (2560x1600 and 300ppi) but it still ensures impressive levels of clarity for video and font even if it lacks the vibrancy and color of Samsung tablet screens (such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1). We’ve already run the rule over Windows 8, and with the Surface you can expect Windows 8 RT which is a version of the new operating system that is tailored and streamlined specifically for tablets. The 1.2mp camera is smooth for Skype and other video calls. One thing that we really liked was the angled design of the tablet which means you can have a clear view of the screen to ensure you get exactly what you want to capture in the photo. On the storage front you have a choice of 32GB or 64GB versions of the Surface RT which unlike the iPad has expandable storage options via USB and MicroSDXC. Is the Microsoft Surface an iPad killer? The answer is that they are two very different beasts. The iPad is a sleek multimedia device that has the app capacity and power that can make it as work-friendly as it is amazing for watching films, reading magazines and playing games. Android and IOS, aren’t we already bored of it? Wake up guys, high time we acknowledge something we grew up with “Windows”.

56 DECEMBER, SEPTEMBER,2012 2012

Another planet in the galaxy! Yes, there’s a new member in the Samsung’s Galaxy Family. Its got android 4.1 jelly bean and has the processor as fast as galaxy s3, but here we aren’t talking about a new phone, we are talking about the Samsung Galaxy camera which has a 4.8 inch screen, a 16.3mp camera and is powered with android 4.1. The 4.8’ inch display beast which is the only camera in the country which has so many features pre-loaded. So now instagram lovers can rejoice and don’t have to transfer their cam photos onto your phone or mac to edit your photos. You can edit photos, tag your friends on facebook, post pictures on twitter etc. But is this worth the price. Well, when you have a 16mp digital camera from Nikon or canon that would cost around Rs. 6000/- and a micromax android 4.1 tablet for around Rs. 5,500/- for us this ones a thumbs down. The concept is great the built is super, but overall it doesn’t get digested at Rs. 29,990.

its first weekend. A total that ranks as the eighth biggest opening weekend of all-time. Still, this is not the biggest opening in Twilight history. That honor will go to 2009’s New Moon which opened around $142.8 million, while Breaking Dawn Part 2 had the opening $141.3 million this weekend. The film has also grossed $200 million internationally and it has earned the highest Cinema Score - a grading of movies by audiences across the country - of any in the franchise. As the studio noted in its estimate, that’s the second-highest domestic weekend opening for a “Twilight” film, after “New Moon”. The franchise as a whole has now claimed three of the top 10 openings of all time, with “Breaking Dawn Part 2” coming in at No. 8,New Moon at No.7 and last year’s Breaking Dawn - Part 1(No. 9 with $138.1 million). While talking about the story, the climax is a total treat. All the readers will be excited to see the action filled ending other than the slow and not so fascinating climax in the book. After all who wouldn’t like a little action after all that drama, a little mind game, as it was in the book would not be fair ending to the movie saga.

ROYAL BABY ON THE WAY? Fans of the royal couple have been waiting forever for Prince William and Kate Middleton to announce a pregnancy, and it seems the waiting might soon be done. It is being rumored that the two will be announcing baby news this month. Middleton has allegedly put on some weight in order to stay healthy throughout her rumored pregnancy. Both are allegedly excited for the announcement as having a family is definitely a priority for them. Kate and William, both 30, reportedly put baby plans on hold due their high-profile engagements throughout the year, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. With a cleared schedule, could this be it? Jessica Hay, a friend of the Duchess of Cambridge, told a magazine that the couple is preparing to share “wonderful, happy news” in December. Hay, said the Duke and Duchess don’t want to be older parents and are ready to have children. As of now, she claims Kate Middleton is really pregnant and an announcement will be made this month. Kate is not the only one eager to get pregnant. Queen Elizabeth is said to be anticipating the day she can make the announcement about a future heir to the throne. Though there was a speculation during Kate and William’s diamond Jubilee tour to Southeast Asia that Kate was pregnant when she chose to drink water instead of wine. However, the couple returned to England with no good news to share. A royal insider claims, “Kate’s really feeling the pressure to produce the next heir to the throne.” Is there really going to be a pregnancy announcement for Prince William and Kate Middleton this time or is it just another rumor? 58 DECEMBER, 2012

ALIA BHATT’S NEXT

B O L L Y W O O D

Alia Bhatt will next be seen in ’2 states’ opposite Arjun Kapoor. A lot will be expected from the film as its being co-produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala. Karan wanted to make the announcement of Alia being in ’2 States’ only after Student of the year released. Since SOTY is still doing so well, and Sajid loved Alia’s acting capabilities, both Karan and Sajid think that she is perfect for the role. ’2 states’ will only go on floors once Arjun Kapoor is done with YRF’s Aurangazeb.2. Like in the novel, Arjun Kapoor will be seen as a Punjabi boy, while Alia Bhatt gets to play a beautiful and an intelligent South Indian girl. The film is based on author Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel, 2 States. It is the love story of a girl from a Tamil family and a Punjabi boy, and the kind of obstacles they face before getting married. Abhishek Verman, will make his debut as a director with 2 States. Abhishek has earlier worked as a creative director on Karan’s films like My Name Is Khan and SOTY that, co-incidentally, had Alia as the female lead.

BIGG BOSS KE NAYE PADOSI This season of Bigg Boss is truly living up to its tagline of being ‘Alag Che’. With new elements introduced and a twist unfolding every day. And now the latest is, Bigg Boss house in Lonavala has new populace to give company to the inmates. The new neighbors will however be living in a completely contrasting set up that of an earthen, rustic and raw mud house which is different from the existing sprawling mansion. This second house is not even one fourth the size of the current 10,000 square feet house and the new contestants will have to survive in here! Call it an eco friendly nest or a village house, it’s sure to test patience of the contestants that go beyond food and stay! Unlike the other house, the flooring and walls are made out of mud, includes only one single bedroom with 6 beds that will not have mattresses. You will see couches replaced by chatais for comfort on the floor and antique copper trunk for storages. While the modern Bigg Boss house has amenities like air conditioning, the contestants in the rustic house will have to live on without it! The kitchen includes a small gas stove that makes it mandatory for the contestants to sit down and cook with aluminum and copper utensils used back in the day. This kitchen will not have a microwave oven, food processor or even a sink to wash the dishes. For water storage, there is a matka and kulhads available for drinking tea etc. And for cleaning utensils, clothes etc. there is a six feet deep well that has been created making it tough for the housemates. For lighting purposes, the entire house will be lit up with lanterns and to communicate with Salman there is a puraane zamaane ka television set! While this new house is isolated from the original Bigg Boss house, the new inmates will be under the scanner of Bigg Boss through 15 cameras trailing their every move and a small confession room. Unaware of the new padosi’s, the present modern house inmates are fighting it out to win the battle but you never know how destines are swapped. While every season the contestants are deprived of the worldly comforts... they have no idea of what their padosi’s are going through to fit the bill and steal the title away!

THE TOLLYWOOD BEAUTY Kajal Agarwal is one of the leading actresses in Telugu and Tamil film industry. She is pairing with big heroes. While speaking to the media she said, “I came to cinema in the year 2004. The Telugu film Magadheera gave me a big status. Even now I have lots of Telugu films on hand. I am interested to act in challenging roles. I like to wear sari. I also like to eat ice cream drenching in the rain. My favorite spot is Caribbean Islands. When I am free, I listen to music and read books. I will not don the glamour role like Vidhya Balan donned in The Dirty Picture. At the same time I like Vidhya Balan very much. Samantha and Thamanna are my close friends. I never thought that I will get such a big place in the film industry. I worked hard and have come to this place. It is easy for me to act in Tamil and Telugu films than acting in Hindi films. There are rumors about me that I am coming late for the shootings. There is no truth in this news. I am not the reason for this. I am not in love with anyone. I have not thought about marriage. I have no time for love and marriage. I am very busy acting.’’ Looks like finally we have a clear about this beauty. 62 DECEMBER, 2012

DAVID BECKHAM

S P O R T S

To play last game with Los Angeles Galaxy Football legend David Beckham says he will play his final game with the Los Angeles Galaxy when the Major League Soccer club hosts the league championship early next month. The 37-year-old former England captain has spent the past six seasons with the Galaxy, leading Los Angeles to an MLS Cup title last season when they defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0. Beckham and the Galaxy go for their second consecutive crown when they face the Dynamo in a repeat of last year’s final on December 1 at the Home Depot Center. Beckham said the game would be his last for the team as he hopes to move on and eventually become a part-owner of an MLS team in the future. Beckham did not go into specifics about what he meant by “one last challenge” or what he plans to do next. There have been reports out of Australia last week that their professional league is trying to woo him to make a move down under. There has also been strong interest from European clubs. Beckham has scheduled a news conference soon where the Galaxy said he would discuss his future in more detail.

CCI TO HONOUR Sachin Tendulkar on 75th year of Brabourne Stadium

The Cricket Club of India is to honour senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar as part of celebrating its 75th anniversary at its famous Brabourne Stadium. Cricket Board president N Srinivasan will be the chief guest as CCI honours the “First Citizen of the World of Cricket”. Visiting England team captain Alastair Cook, team director Andy Flower and batting coach Graham Gooch, among others, will be present on the occasion. Tendulkar has fond memories of the club, which changed its rules to allow the then 14-year-old cricketer to use its dressing room when he featured in local cricket tournaments in the late 1980s. CCI is one of the members affiliated to the BCCI but does not take part in the Ranji Trophy national tournament. The Brabourne Stadium was regular Test venue in this metropolis before all the international cricket matches were shifted to the nearby Wankhede Stadium in the mid-1970s, following a long-standing seat-sharing dispute between the club and the Mumbai Cricket Association. When Wankhede was undergoing renovation before the 2011 World Cup and was unavailable to host matches, Test cricket returned to the Brabourne, although for just one game, when India played against Sri Lanka in December, 2009.

HAMILTON Wins at Austin, title race set for Brazil The 27-year-old Briton, who started second on the grid alongside the defending champion, made the most of his superior outright speed to pass Vettel on lap 42 and claim the 21st victory of his career. For Vettel, it was a personal disappointment, but not enough to prevent his Red Bull team from winning the constructors title for the third successive season. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari finished third after starting seventh on the grid , thanks to his team’s pragmatic decision to break the gearbox seal on Felipe Massa’s car, and his podium finish ensured that the title battle will go down to the wire at next weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo. Vettel goes to Interleague with a lead of 13 points, on 273 points compared to Alonso on 260. Hamilton, who leaves McLaren for Mercedes next year, was intent on delivering another win for the team before his departure and did so with élan as he seized his fourth win this year. Amazingly, it was the first time F1’s best three drivers of the current crop had shared a podium and, to mark the Texan location, all three wore Stetson cowboy hats as they celebrated. In front of a sellout crowd of 135,000 at the new Circuit of the Americas and under a solid blue sky, Vettel made a near-perfect start to pull clear from his 36th pole position and into the lead with Red Bull team-mate Webber advancing to second behind him. Hamilton, starting second, struggled with lack of grip on the slippery side of the track and could not defend against Webber, but stayed third up the hill and into the sweeping left-hander turn one as the field hustled together in the pack. Alonso, starting seventh thanks to Ferrari’s strategic decision to break the seal on Massa’s gearbox and take a five-place penalty for the Brazilian, had a clean start and went round the outside of turn one and into fourth, taking full advantage of a poor start by Raikkonen. It was a thrilling vision as the cars stretched out and began to heat their tyres to optimum levels, but the focus was clearly at the front of the field where Vettel was unable to shake off his pursuers. 64 DECEMBER, 2012

‘JAB TAK HAI JAAN’ is yet another impossible love story made believable by the conviction of the makers. Samar Anand (Shah Rukh) does odd jobs in London for sustenance, on a cold London night, while cleaning snow from the sidewalks, Samar falls for the beautiful Meera (Katrina Kaif), Indian billionaire’s daughter who is always negotiating with God and cutting deals to accomplish her unfulfilled wishes. Quite obviously their love for each other is mired by impossibilities. The two besotted lovers are driven apart by circumstances. Our suave odd-job man is now Major Samar Anand. Rookie documentary filmmaker, Akira (Anushka Sharma) wants to film the fearless bomb squad head and needless to say, the feisty kudi soon finds herself falling hook, line and sinker for our intense army man.

BREAKING DAWN PART 2 The new film picks up with the new-and-improved Bella. Now, as one of the undead, she sees the world in vampire vision: able to zoom in on a single dewdrop or watch dust motes dance in the light. She revels in her new powers and even her husband Edward Cullen seems to enjoy egging her on. Frankly, Bella may be undead, but her character finally has a pulse. The most odious part of the series has been its theme of self-sacrifice. Bella is a bright girl who dropped out of school, left her friends and her father and risked a dangerous pregnancy all for her eternal love, Edward. It would be an eternal paradise of the lover’s, except for those pesky Volturi, who are all set to kill the newborn renesmee along with the whole Cullen clan. The Cullen’s travel the world gathering a United Nations of Vampires to support them. They all gather on a field, along with their furry wolf buddies, and await the battle.

PLAYING FOR KEEPS tells the story of Keepsie Branson, a bar owner in the shining metropolis of Seventh City: birthplace of super powers. Keepsie and her friends live among egotistical heroes and manipulative villains, and manage to fall directly in the middle as people with powers, but who just aren’t strong enough to make a difference. Or that’s what they’ve been told. As the city begins to melt down, it’s hard to tell who the good guys are and who the bad are.

Shankar’s forthcoming flick ‘I’, which has Vikram in the lead, is being simultaneously made in Telugu. The title of the Tollywood version, according to sources, is ‘Manoharudu’. Starring Amy Jackson as the leading lady, the movie is touted as a romantic thriller, with Suresh Gopi, Ramkumar and others playing crucial roles. Music is by A R Rahman.
