WHATS NEW

The Himalayan Cafe

Vasudev Singh who is the owner of this wonder place is from Nepal. He planned to open this cafe because he is personally a food lover and had travelled around to a lot of places trying different cuisines and the reason he particularly opened this cafe was that he had noticed the lack of authentic and yummy momos in Hyderabad. This place serves varieties of momos and the special momos are the best ones you have ever had in Hyderabad and these are usually served with 3 different sauces which are equally finger licking. They also serve amazing Thukpa which has a mixture of spicy and tangy tastes and best part about this for all those health conscious is that, this food is healthy enough to eat during any of your days. You can order this amazing food on Swiggy and Zomato and the packing is done really nice and safe. Bon Appétit! Address: Kondapur, Hyderabad PH: +919000456702

The Dessert Box

The Dessert Box is a treasure of sweet treats. Offering nearly 20 varieties including brownies, cupcakes, cookies, and cheesecakes, this place can satisfy your sweetooth. Fayrouz Zaidi owner of The Dessert Box is from Lucknow and relished desserts in his town, but took up baking as a profession only because the city had no choices in Therapeutic Recreation. She desires to make desserts and recreate classics. She had started off by baking her mother’s classic chocolate cake recipe. Later, she continued to bake more and that’s when she started receiving orders from known people. The Lindt chocolate brownies made with dark chocolate are just lip smacking with a flaky texture and the first bite is so gooey that the thought of it is mouth watering! There are many other delicious items to choose from. To get these yummy desserts, you can order them on Swiggy and Zomato. Address: 8-2-318/17-A, Plot 400, Road 10, Banjara Hills PH: +919000148922

Jasmine Sahney Pillai Jasmine Sahney Pillai, the Executive Director at the Radisson Blu Plaza, Banjara Hills, can be best described as a devoted mom to her two wonderful kids, family-oriented, and a bit of an introvert who enjoys spending time with close friends and family. After graduating from Switzerland, she worked in a number of fields such as advertising, trade and commerce, until finally, she decided to take up her family business which was in the engineering industry and subsequently went into hotels. She is an avid photographer who loves to travel and heads out at least once every two months. “I truly believe travel is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and I go by the saying ‘invest in experiences, not things’”, she says. Jasmine’s love for good food is the reason she started her blog, ‘The Hungry Gastronomer’. “I have been interested in cooking since I was in my teens and I love all kinds of cuisines, having tried and enjoyed a wide variety of them. The Hungry Gastronomer is a result of my passion and it features my collection of food experiences and pictures that I take in my kitchen and also during my travels”, she says. 20 AUGUST, 2018 - TULIP

LIFESTYLE

What do you do in your leisure time? I love to cook and I watch a lot of food channels for ideas and inspiration. I also have a food blog, an Instagram page and a Facebook page, The Hungry Gastronomer. I have recently started a YouTube channel as well and all this keeps me pretty busy. I sometimes like to just listen to music over a glass of wine, meet close friends or go out for a movie occasionally. What according to you is your biggest achievement so far? This may sound corny but I believe my biggest achievement is how my two wonderful children have turned out. I feel a great sense of pride, accomplishment and satisfaction and do believe that even though mothering has its many challenges, I was able to overcome them and guide my kids into becoming responsible, sensitive, loving and kind human beings; the qualities which I believe are necessary for happiness and success. How do you manage your personal and professional life? That’s not too difficult. I prioritize both equally and I make sure I don’t bring my work home. What do you love the most about your work? What keeps you motivated? I love the opportunity to interact with my staff and co-workers who come from so many different cultures and backgrounds. From the stewards in different departments to the managers- there is so much to learn from all of them. I love seeing their happy faces every morning, hearing their personal stories. My motivation comes from their hard work and subsequent success, knowing I have such an amazing team who will go beyond their means to achieve whatever targets and goals we set. What advice would you like to give to working moms? Plan, prioritize, compartmentalize and lead by example. I strongly believe that working moms can do it all. Work, look after the kids and run a home. It’s also a learning experience for kids to grow up in this atmosphere as they come to realize that it is possible to multi-task and do all the things in life one wishes to if one plans well.

Rapid Fire What is one of the things you would put on your “bucket list”? Going on a food trail in France, Italy and Spain. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? Lapland in Finland to see the Northern Lights What is the first thing you notice about someone when you first meet? Their eyes, as I do believe that the eyes are the mirror to your soul. What advice would you give your kids? Follow your passion and be committed to whatever you do and success will follow. Who do you admire the most? Oprah Winfrey – She surmounted her challenges and difficulties with great courage and never gave up. She is a fantastic role model - and not just for women. What is your favourite movie quote? I’m a hopeless romantic! “You make me want to be a better person” from As Good as It Gets. What fashion trend do you just not get? Wearing extremely low trousers over a thong. What’s your favourite cuisine? It’s got to be French. Are you a dog or a cat person? Totally a dog person. They are beautiful, kind and loyal companions.

Gift Ideas

Everything about Indian weddings is really exciting, the dress, the ceremony, the vows. Here, the guests are treated as gods and exchanging gifts forms an integral part of the wedding. Both guests and hosts exchange gifts in order to express their joy and gratitude. However, while choosing a gift for the couple, one should keep in mind certain things like which party has invited us, the girls or the boys, our relation, our budget etc. Here are a few IDEAS to consider when deciding on a wedding gift for the bride and groom.

Bags and clutches

There is one such gift which is very much liked by most of the women and that is bags and clutches. Generally, most of the women have at least two-three different types of handbag to fit into the occasion and requirements. Trust me, she’d love it. Just be sure to keep the bride’s trousseau in mind when you shop.

Coffee Mugs

If you have known the couple before they got married and have some nice memories captured, then without a doubt you can go for a Personalized Decorative Item. It’s the smallest of things that make a house a home. So consider gifting nice and pretty home decor items like lampshades, murals, paintings, wall hangings, clocks, statues and vases. Handicraft items are a very nice touch when it comes to gifting.

Gift Vouchers

Another popular way of giving the gift of choice is to present the couple with gift vouchers. These vouchers can be used to purchase a wide range of lifestyle items like clothes, shoes, decorative items, books, electronic appliances and gadgets .So,why not gift a voucher and let them purchase a gift of their own choice!

Kitchen Gadgets

A kitchen gadget is a perfect gift for a girl looking to set up a new home; it is a great idea to gift some kitchen utensils that are bound to come in handy. Casseroles, non-stick cooking ranges, oven-proof glassware, dinnerware and cutlery sets are the essential items she can’t do without. Gifting these might be a nice way to set her up in her future kitchen. TULIP - AUGUST, 2018 29

Ganesh Nallari

Ganesh Nallari has designed for several films and television shows in the South like Jhummandi Nadam, Mr. Perfect, Life is Beautiful, Gundello Godari , Uu Kodathara Ulikki Padathara, Lakshmi talk show and Malayalee house amongst many others. He has also designed for movie stars like Taapsee Pannu, Lakshmi Manchu, Amala Akkineni, Revathi, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Sonu Sood, Manoj Manchu and has the credit of giving a makeover to Olympic gold medalist P.V. Sindhu for The Times of India. In an interview with us he said “I believe I’m basically a teller of stories. Both as a designer and as a dancer, I strive to communicate stories and fables and fantasies. Everything that evokes emotion on me inspires my fashion. Be it an old memory, a person, place, painting, dance or an untold story. Being a trained classical dancer, there has always been a strong influence of dance in my clothing line. One other major source of inspiration is of course human beings and the differences in people inspire me greatly. Understanding the lines and curves of human bodies, appreciating and enhancing them, creating beauty which knows no prejudices or pre-conceived notions - this challenge inspires me daily.” When we asked to describe his personal style he said “Ranging from casual to semi-formal and formal, my personal style is a reflection of my mind at that very moment and of course, it’s always occasion appropriate too. I usually find myself balancing the two sides of my personality - my clean cut, no-nonsense professional side and my artsy, bohemian, mildly extravagant mojo. Apart from the basic “must haves”, I enjoy wearing cotton handloom Kutras and small print shirts. Teaming up a block printed shirt with a solid colour linen jacket over jeans is my favourite semi-formal look. Culture is something that’s deep rooted and I give it a spin by showing off my split side with Dhoti pants that I team up with flowy bold stoles. For a show recently I draped my Mom’s vintage Banaras saree with a TussarMatka long kurta. I also like carrying big or small sling bags depending on the need. I’m fond of silver jewellery and use it minimally, may be a finger ring or chain occasionally. Comfortable sneakers, loafers in colour, boots and some cool sandals and slippers, I don them all. Perfume is a deeply personal choice to me and I choose scents that move me, which I feel strongly about. I like constant change, so apart from the right clothing that reflects my soul, I love to experiment with my hair, and of course, there is so much a man says with his beard! 40 AUGUST, 2018 - TULIP

Tanvi Gupta & Sonali Agarwal The two fashion designers from Hyderabad are very well known for their contemporary ethnic wear brand based in Hyderabad. In an interview with us, we asked about their inspiration which encouraged them to do this work, they said “Our work is essentially inspired from Elements of Nature, in all its beauty and splendour! The Millennial Indian woman - who is mindful of her traditions, yet unapologetic of her unique style inspires most of our silhouettes and colours. For our last collection - A dandelion’s dream, we made the quintessential shift from traditional to indo-western silhouettes for brides. We’ve been customizing Ethnic and Indo-western wear for over two years now and the best way to understand changing preferences, desires, choice of fabrics and cuts is to through client interactions. The collection is a creation of garments for iconic memories and fairy-tale wedding moments. The collection takes inspiration from a dandelion, a flower symbolizing elegance and timeless beauty. It aims at spreading a playful vibe with unrestrained comfort enhanced with ruffles and delicate pastel embroideries. Hence, inspired by the unexplored spaces of a garden, secrets held under the leaves, and spring splash of hues around us, we put together A ‘Dandelions dream’.” We also asked about their personal dressing style and Tanvi said “My style is very feminine, formal and timeless. I am not big on fads and I usually end up buying versatile pieces that can be easily dressed up for an evening out. I love to experiment with Indian wear cuts that add volume to my skinny body frame.” And Sonali said “Style is a very personal thing. It portrays who you are. My style is rather laid back. I wear relaxed dresses, anti-fit tops with cropped pants and Indo western tunics from my brand. For a night out, I pair my subtle pastel dresses with statement jewellery, a great bag and dressy shoes.”

Capturing Life. Creating Art. The popular English idiom “A picture is worth a thousand words” couldn’t be truer. A single image can convey a message that no amount of words can describe; it captures a moment in time. Whether you’re a professional photographer or just enjoy clicking goofy pictures of your friends and taking selfies, we can’t deny that it all takes lots of work. We all know the struggle of clicking a million pictures just to get that one picture that’s Instagram-worthy; and the absolute annoyance when you don’t get it right. Well, it’s kind of what photographers do on a daily basis. We’ve got to thank them for being so patient with us and so creative with their skills only to see us happy with the final result! As 19th August is celebrated as World’s Photography Day, we wanted to do something special to celebrate it and interviewed some of the best photographers in the city. 48 AUGUST, 2018 - TULIP

Satish Yalamarthi Instagram: satishyalamarthi

About him: I am a professional photographer working for a few magazines and corporate companies as a freelance photographer. I’m also working as a visual effects artist for the last 9 years. Journey to becoming photographer: I’ve been inclined towards creative fields like photography, painting and art since childhood and I’ve always wanted to pursue my career in the same but I didn’t know how or where to begin. I studied advanced visual effects and filmmaking in Hyderabad and started working as a VFX artist. That’s when I got a chance experiment with photography and I fell in love with it instantly. Eventually, I got better at it and acquired all the gear to become a professional photographer. Love for photography: Being a photographer is seriously awesome. It is quite an incredible thing to experience. Suddenly you start to notice things like light, shapes, colours, textures, people, buildings, trees, flowers; something you never paid much attention to earlier. When you capture a beautiful moment, it’s a feeling you need to experience yourself. It’s hard to put it in words. Everything around you looks different once you start to see the world as a photographer. Favourite work: It’s really hard to choose but I think my favourite work has to be my first cover shoot for Tulip. It was fun and gave my career a boost. Go-to lens: My favourite lens has to be Canon 135mmF2. It’s one of the sharpest lenses of Canon and I absolutely love the contrast and bokeh effects.

If not photography, then? I am a VFX artist by profession. So if I weren’t a photographer, I would be doing my job as a VFX artist. TULIP - AUGUST, 2018 49

About him: I’m a professional photographer but I’m also a cricket fanatic. I absolutely love animals and work for various animal shelters in Hyderabad. I have 9 dogs at my place and 6 of them are Indian breeds. I’m so thankful to my parents for putting up with me and taking care of all the dogs. I also enjoy spending time with my friends. Journey to becoming photographer: I was never really interested in photography. Once I was done with my graduation, I started working for an MNC. Having worked there for a year, I realized it wasn’t something I enjoyed so I quit my job. One day I just happened to tag along with my friend who wanted to go to Mumbai to get his portfolio done. It was this shoot that really fascinated me and inspired me to start pursuing photography. After coming back to Hyderabad, I bought a camera and started doing shoots for my friends and realized that I needed to work on my skills. So I went back to Mumbai, did a course in the FX School of Photography and then assisted a fashion photographer for a year. Then I came back to Hyderabad started my journey as a professional photographer. Love for photography: Being a photographer gives you a lot of scope to be creative. You can do whatever you want to and not have someone telling you what to do at all times. I enjoy my freedom and express myself and my emotions through my pictures. I enjoy being my own boss. Favourite work: I like most of my work but if I had to choose, it would have to be the shoots with Kajal Aggarwal and Rana Daggubati. As it was my first time shooting with celebrities, I was really excited and they went extremely well. I’d become a huge fan of Rana Daggubati after watching Baahubali so this was something I was really looking forward to. Go-to lens: My favourite lens is the Canon 24-70 f2.8. It’s really versatile and I do most of my photoshoots with it. It isn’t the best for the bokeh mode but I’m not very fond of bokeh anyway so this is my go-to. If not photography, then? I really don’t know what I’d be if I weren’t a photographer. I do have an Engineering degree but I wouldn’t want to get into that field. I’d probably be a drummer because I’ve done it in the past and I really enjoy it.

Sushmitha Tadakamadla

FEATURE

Instagram: sushmithatadakamadla About him: I am a classical dancer and a visual story teller. Journey to becoming photographer: The story of my first experiences with photography goes back to 2013. I was completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication at St. Francis Degree College for Women. One day, the regional editor of Hindu (then) had come down to college and had given all the students an opportunity to write a story and make a short film - he gave us complete freedom to select our own topic. He promised us that he would publish his favourite story in the Education Plus section. This happened during the end of July. Ganesh Chaturthi was around the corner, and that gave me an idea to write a story about it. I would have an edge over the others since Ganesh Chaturthi was a seasonal topic. So, my classmate Nandika and I began working on this lead. We drafted a story about how the pandals are organized in the city and made a small film. To my luck, the story got published! My father gifted me a Sony Alpha 57 - my first ever camera. That’s how it all began. Studying at Francis was the biggest factor to influence me to become a photographer. St. Francis being a women’s college was my biggest canvas for me to experiment and learn photography. With everyone asking me to take their photographs, I began enjoying this process. Bringing a smile to people’s faces got me going. But, the incident which completely changed my mind was Joseph Radhik’s video on Youtube. He presented his work at Lamakaan (for Pecha Kucha). His video got me on my feet! I began reading more about him and as I discovered more, the revelation happened that this is exactly what I want to do! Become a photographer! I went to Pune, did an intensive photography course at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s School of Photography. And here I am sharing my story with you. Love for photography: There are so many things I love about being a photographer! I represent my voice and opinion through image making. Being a photographer helps me translate my thoughts into something more tangible - something that I can share with the world - through photographs! I get to meet new people every day and learning about them,

knowing their stories inspires me to become a better artist! Above all, the one thing I love the most about being a photographer is that I am transforming myself into a better human being every single day. Learning about my own self, learning about the beautiful wonders of the world, learning so many new things from the experiences we make and share is what gets me excited every day as a photographer. Favourite work: In my whole body of work, my personal favourite is a series of photographs I have done with three people (Eshan Hilal, Zeeshan Ali, Alex Mathew). As a part of my final showcase at photography school, I had to create content that I could show as my portfolio. During that process, I had a lot of ideas that I wanted to work on for the same. So, I worked with these three people. Eshan Hilal is the first male belly dancer in our country; Zeeshan Ali is a designer/stylist/makeup artist/model; Alex Mathew is the first drag queen in our country. With my experiences at Francis, the idea of feminism always got me thinking about women empowerment and about the idea of being independent. From being in an all-girls environment (Francis) to being in a batch of 27 students with just 4 girls (Photography school, Pune) was a complete 180 degrees flip for me. These two contrasting environments made me think that when people talk about feminism, everyone preaches that women should be given this and that. But the essence of feminism is having equality amongst men and women. In this process, I feel everyone has either forgotten or neglected the fact that there are so many stereotypes created towards men too. This thought of mine made me search for men who were breaking these stereotypes for real. And that’s how I happened to create those images - “Breaking Stereotypes”. This whole series “Breaking Stereotypes” is very special to me. It represents my voice and my opinions. Go-to lens: I have always had a soft corner for prime lenses. For technical and aesthetic reasons, I always liked prime lenses. My current favourite is the Canon 100mm macro lens. I use it for fashion and food photography. The reason I love using this lens when I am doing a food shoot, it helps me compose the image better. My second love being fashion photography, when I am in a fashion shoot is because I get to go up close with my muse and that helps me in narrating a story better. If not photography, then? That’s an interesting question! I never really thought of this. If I wasn’t a photographer, I would be a professional Bharatanatyam dancer. It is dance that always stuck by my side in every phase of my life.

Independence Day India’s Independence Day is observed on Aug 15 every year. We achieved independence on August 15, 1947 and this is occasion is celebrated every year. Independence Day is a yearly recognition which is celebrated on the 15th of August. India’s Independence Day is a special day of extraordinary importance for the general population of India. On this day India got its freedom from the British control after a long stretch of servitude. It has been pronounced as the National and Gazetted Holiday across India keeping in mind the end goal to freely celebrate the independence of the nation from British Empire on 15th of August in 1947. This year in 2018, India is celebrating its 72nd Independence Day to pay tribute and recall all the warriors who had contributed a great deal and battled for the Independence of India. - By Viinuthna Malla

M.N. Hareesh, Data Scientist Independence Day is fast approaching. Historically, no day can be of more importance than this day. The mighty British Empire was overthrown and democracy was established which paved the way for the people of India to charter its own course for the future. The story of Indian independence is all we have to look back at to know and understand the value systems on which India was born. One of the most important factors which enabled the ouster of British was “Unity”. We owe our freedom to the sacrifices and unity exhibited by our freedom fighters. The best way we can celebrate this Independence Day to unite and fight for finding solutions to the challenges faced by the society. Even as we celebrate this Independence Day, let us unite and prepare ourselves to take on the issues and challenges which our country faces today and pave the way for a better future.

History

FEATURE

The Indian subcontinent was an outpost of a few European traders in the 17th century. Later it was enslaved by the British as they had military strength. They established their local kingdoms and effective forces throughout India during the 18th century. An independence revolution was started against the British in 1857 and that Indian Rebellion was called as the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857, the Indian Mutiny, the Uprising of 1857 and the Sepoy Mutiny. It was started against East India Company’s army at Bengal Presidency on 10th May in 1857. Through that Rebellion, freedom fighters of India made the British free the control over India. The Revolt of 1857 was an effective rebellion after which various civic societies emerged across India. One of them was the Indian National Congress Party which formed in the year 1885. The period of dissatisfaction and unhappiness has raised non-violent movements like the non-cooperation and civil disobedience all through the nation which was led by the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Indian National Congress held a meeting in 1929 at Lahore, India was declared as Purna Swaraj. Earlier, 26th of January was declared as the Indian Independence Day between 1930 and 1947. Indian citizens were requested by the Indian National Congress to follow civil disobedience as well as follow the timely instructions issued until the complete independence of India. In 1947 the British government discovered that it no longer could show its power over India. Indian freedom fighters continued fighting and then Britain decided to free India from the rule. Then started the Hindu Muslim violence which took place after the independence of India (on

August 15, 1947) which separated India and Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah became the first Governor General in Karachi Pakistan. However, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister of Independent India. An official ceremony was held in Delhi where all the great leaders and freedom fighters - Abul Kalam Azad, B. R. Ambedkar, Master Tara Singh and many more took part to celebrate freedom of India.

There are many instances from 1857 where people came together for a common cause, i.e. to oust the British. Indian freedom fighters could never look through the prism of religion, caste and geography. The common cause i.e. nation’s freedom was all that they strove for. If unity was found lacking one could be sure that such a historic victory would not have been achieved. It is evident that when people unite, there is no challenge that can’t be overcome. Reaching education to the masses, ensuring health care is affordable to all, elimination of poverty, social justice for the oppressed and many more. Overcoming these challenges should be our next freedom struggle, and as history suggests we can surely overcome these challenges if people can shed their differences and unite for the cause and challenges which the nation is going through.

The battle for India’s Independence started in 1857 with the Sepoy Mutiny in Meerut. Afterwards, in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political associations, under the authority of Mahatma Gandhi, propelled a countrywide freedom development. Provincial forces were exchanged to India on August 15, 1947. The Constituent Assembly, with who powers were to be exchanged, met to celebrate India’s freedom at 11 pm on August 14, 1947. India picked up its freedom and turned into a free nation at midnight between August 14 and August 15, 1947. It was then that free India’s first leader Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his celebrated “Tryst with Destiny” speech. Individuals from all over India are helped to remember the importance of this occasion - it denoted the beginning of another time of deliverance from the British imperialism that occurred in India for over 200 years.

Akshay Chari, Financial Analyst

Every year, Independence Day is celebrated by hoisting the tricolour National flag across the country. The major attraction of the celebration is at the Red Fort in Delhi where India’s Prime Minister hoists a flag and then delivers the speech to the entire nation. When you see a tricolour fluttering atop the Red Fort in New Delhi or any big national flag hoisted on any government building, chances are that the flag might have arrived from Hubli. Dharwad district, which promoted the Khadi movement since the beginning, also houses the country’s only National Flag Manufacturing Unit. Situated on the premises of the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS) at Bengeri in Hubli, it manufactures the national flag as per the guidelines of the Flag Code of India. It is the only centre authorised by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) which manufactures the tricolour in conformation with the standards laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Celebration

On Independence Day, the President of India delivers the “Address to the Nation” and the Prime Minister hoists the Indian flag on the walls of the Red Fort in New Delhi, later the Indian national anthem is sung in respect. Then, 21gun shots are fired in honour of the solemn occasion. The Prime Minister in his speech highlights previous year’s achievements raises important issues and wishes for further development. He pays tribute to the leaders of the Indian independence movement in his speech which is then followed by march past done by all divisions of the Indian Armed Forces and paramilitary forces. Parades and pageants showcase scenes from the independence struggle and India’s diverse cultural traditions. Similar events take place in state capitals where the Chief Ministers of individual states unfold the national flag, followed by parades and pageants. The India Gate is lighted up beautifully to mark this occasion. 54 AUGUST, 2018 - TULIP

Pandora’s Box

FEATURE

All of us have obviously heard of music bands like Thermal and A Quater, Skrat, Raghu Dixit Project and the like. But there are several other artists who just ace their job and have brought a new look to the music world. The first generation Indian was not so open to the rest of the world and the society was relatively closed to global influences. But the present day has seen a lot of changes. Exchange of culture, thoughts and music has brought an evolution which has this generation to many things and most importantly to music genres. In our nation, we consider two things mainstream- Bollywood and cricket. But despite film music’s preponderant influence on India’s popular music, in the last decade the country has seen significant growth in independent music of all stripes. Live bands, DJs and producers, and solo artistes are appearing in unprecedented numbers on stages across the country. Their audiences may comprise only a small portion of the overall population, but in absolute terms, they have the ears and attention of many Indians. While the West knows India for Bollywood music, the parallel independent industry – which has seen a boom in the last five years – has brought talent and several genres to the fore, combining catchy

band has gone through a string of line-up changes in the past but the current line-up has - Timothy Alan Paul – Guitar, Rohit Luke – Guitar, Aniketh Yadav – Drums, Shawn Vivian – Bass and Deepu Joseph – Vocals. In an interview we had asked the band entire history, from its birth till date and Timothy Alan Paul (guitarist) said “We were just college kids when we started the band in 2010. Back then, we took on anything or everything that sounded ‘cool’. And we quite liked the term Pandora’s Box. In hindsight, it comes from Greek mythology and was an object that let out evil into the world. However, we have our own perspective to that – rather a box that pushes out evil from its confines and leaves space for hope. Hope is something that our lyrics and themes focus on. The band was founded by me and a couple of ex-members in 2010. We knew each other through college and mutual friends. Luke (guitarist), another close friend, joined in 2011 since we had similar music styles. Aniketh, who was a formidable drummer in the Hyderabad metal scene, joined us in 2012.” “After a string of line-up changes, we finally seem to have found our unique style or sound. That was exactly when Shawn (bass guitarist) and Deepu (vocalist) joined the band in 2017. It’s been a beautiful evolution ever since, and after working on our debut EP ‘Divergence’ for months we seem to be in a space where we push on to other cities. We’re looking forward to hearing what audiences in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Delhi think of our music.” says Aniketh (drummer).

tunes and beautiful lyrics. The young minds in India have brought up their talent in those fields which are likeable not only to them but most of the music lovers. Just like the name suggests, Pandora’s Box is a 5-piece progressive metal/experimental band from Hyderabad that uses a variety of musical influences to conjure up an eclectic and fresh sonic experience. What began as a cover band in 2010, quickly transformed into one of the most potent progressive outfits around. The band has since played over 50 gigs and has gained a reputation in the local circuit with powerpacked performances and out-of-the-box sounds. 2018 signals the start of a new phase in the band’s journey with the release of its debut EP ‘Divergence’ – a true representation of the band’s musical DNA. The

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the great response for our debut EP. People from all over the country have started to notice us and we have a few opportunities to play at some premier music festivals and venues outside of Hyderabad. The rest of 2018 looks promising for us. We’ve also started work on our next EP.” says Shawn (bass guitarist). “To be specific, we’ve all been influenced by Progressive Rock and Metal artists like Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Opeth, Animals as Leaders, Textures, The Contortionist, Scale the Summit, TesseracT and Karnivool. Our music is nothing like any of them from a holistic view, but you’ll find bits of each of them in our music.” says Luke Verghese (guitarist). Deepu (vocalist) has a suggestion for all the future artists; he says “Make practice your second name! Practice is what separates mere talents from real artists. Also, be true to yourself. Do what inspires you and make music that comes from within yourself. That’s when the audience sits up and takes notice because they feel perfect harmony with what they see and what they hear, a certain personality to the music and not something that’s forced.”

BEAUTY

Look Good. Feel Good The demand for both invasive and non-invasive cosmetic treatments has increased tremendously in recent years. More and more people wish to undergo these treatments for various reasons; some want to look younger while others just seek to change a feature they never liked. It can be a great idea as a lot of people who undergo cosmetic treatments say that it gives them the kind of confidence they never had before. The demand for lip fillers, botox and skin lightening is at an all-time high and we’ve got Dr Sireesha, the Regional Medical Head at Life Slimming and Cosmetic Clinic to guide us through the best non-invasive procedures as well as answer some of the most asked questions. CoolSculpting

There are a number of people who are very fit, look absolutely fabulous and have a good BMI (Body Mass Index) range but sometimes they

deal with. We see people of all age groups coming in for hair regrowth and anti-dandruff procedures. The hair loss may sometimes be seasonal but your diet plays a major role in taking care of your hair. The results can take longer for those aged between 35-45 who come in for hair treatments than teenagers and people in their 20’s. However, the good news is that it can still be controlled by making changes to their diets and lifestyle. We offer non-invasive treatments such as growth factors or PRP Therapy which is an all-natural procedure for hair stimulation.

Chemical Peels

It safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. Over time, the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. There may be redness but it fades away within 2-3 hours. BEAUTY the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. We offer two types of peels; basic and advanced. Basic peels or superficial peels are mild which means they need to be done often for visible results. They help with mild discolouration and rough skin whereas the advanced peel results in visible peeling and helps with age spots, fine lines, discolouration and wrinkles. The downtime is more for an advanced peel as the skin needs to be properly moisturized.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is the process of using tiny crystals to exfoliate the skin. It uses no chemicals and is non-invasive. It helps to remove the dead and dry outer layer of the skin’s surface to reveal fresh, healthy

Face-lift

We offer a non-invasive treatment called the HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) Non-Surgical Face Lift which helps in lifting and tightening the face, neck and décolletage. It works by naturally stimulating the production of collagen for a natural, younger-looking appearance. You will not see any instant results but after about a month of getting the treatment, when you compare your new pictures with your old ones, you will definitely see the difference. People aged above 40 can get the treatment done once in 3 months and 3-4 times yearly while those between 25-35 don’t need as many sessions. Why are so many people opting for cosmetic treatments? Have you seen any significant rise in the number of clients? Of course! There has been a tremendous rise in the number of people visiting me. Earlier, it was mostly celebrities or public figures who would come down for treatments but lately, a lot of teenagers who are looking to improve their body image, have also started opting for cosmetic procedures. I’ve had clients who come to me with pictures of celebrities and models asking to look like them. It’s important for them to realize that it’s impossible to look exactly like someone else and that the look can be achieved only up to a certain extent. Do you think social media has had an impact on the increased popularity of cosmetic procedures? I think social media has played a huge role! Cosmetic procedures are being done since a really long time and were earlier kept under wraps. But now, with social media, it’s all out in the open. I feel like social media has created this image in peoples’ minds that only people with fuller lips and whiter skin are beautiful. These days you see so many people who look really similar because of all these treatments that they’ve gotten. What is the most requested treatment currently? The most requested treatment from a large number of clients is complexion improvement. We have a number of options to correct uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation and reduce dark spots and blemishes. A lot of brides who come in are usually looking for an instant glow and radiant finish by rejuvenating the dull and tired skin.

skin underneath. It rejuvenates the surface, resulting in a brighter complexion. It’s suitable for all skin types and does not cause any scarring.

How long does Botox last? What are the long terms effects of injecting it? There aren’t any side effects or long-term effects per se. It’s just temporary muscle relaxation. Botox lasts differently from person to person. It lasts up to 3 months for someone who tends to use their facial muscles a lot more to express themselves and 6-8 months for others. How can facial peels make you look younger? A number of fine lines and wrinkles show up as we age. Even the dullness of skin makes you look tired and older. When we do peels, there’s a lot of exfoliation of the skin which helps in the reduction of pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles which can easily make you look up to five years younger. What are the precautions to be taken before any treatment? It is really important for the clients to provide us with their complete medical history as it will help us give them the best possible guidance. It helps us have a clear understanding and minimizes complications to ensure a safe treatment. SPECIAL

s ip h s n io t la e R g in h Cheris Raksha Bandhan is the Hindu festival that celebrates brotherhood and love. It is celebrated on the full moon in the month of Shraavana in the lunar calendar. The word Raksha means protection, whilst Bandhan is the verb to tie. Traditionally, during the festival sisters tie a Rakhi, a bracelet made of interwoven red and gold threads, around their brothers’ wrists to celebrate their relationship. This thread, which pulsates with sisterly love and sublime sentiments, is rightly called the Rakhi. This ritual not only strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters but also transcends the confines of the family. The importance of Raksha Bandhan is the same as the Diwali festival in India. The celebration of Raksha Bandhan is marked by happiness and excitement, especially among young girls and women. Preparations for the festival begin well in advance. On the Raksha Bandhan day, the festivities start by daybreak. Everyone gets ready early and gathers for the worship of the deities. After invoking the blessings of the Gods, the sister performs brother’s arti, puts tika and chawal on his forehead and ties Rakhi amongst the chanting of mantras. Then she gives him sweets and gifts. The brother accepts her offerings and vows to take care of her and be by her side in the time of need. As a token, he gives the sister a return gift and sweets. The family reunion itself is the reason for celebration. Tasty dishes, sweets, gifts, song and dance and what not. Any Indian festival is incomplete without this.

SPECIAL Dipesh & Prerna Bahirwani

Prerna Bahirwani who is a practising nutritionist, loves celebrating Raksha Bandhan with her brother Dipe sh who is the director at Dipesh Enterprises. In an interview we asked her what her beliefs of an ideal way of celebrating this special day and she says “ Coming from a Sindhi family, the customs and traditions for every Indian festival is very special for us, but the occasion of Raksha Bandhan is something whe re my brother and I do it our way. We are honestly very close to each other and we share a very special brother-sister bond. We start our day early and by 11:30 am we are all ready in our gorg eous attire gathered in the living room. My mom keeps all the swee ts, the rakhis, traditional plate of puja with the red teeka and some rice on it ready for us on the table. While my brother and I get busy with the ceremony, whoever is available will usually click the photos. I tie the Rakhi around his wrist after putting the teek a and stuff and then we feed the sweets to each other, now that fun part is when he has to bend down to touch my feet and take my blessings. I try and get it done twice from him, one for the camera. Rakhi is a very special festival for us since we were kids because we get to spend the entire day together doing all the things that we mutually like. We usually don’t get so much time toge ther on regular days is due to our schedules. Hence, on Rakh i he gets a holiday from my Dad from office and we both can spen d all day & night together. Another thing that makes it special is the food. We are both foodies so we get to enjoy some reall y yummy food. Most of the days I’m on a diet, but on certain days I can let it go and cheat. Rakhi is one such day. One such mom ent which we both feel is really special and close to our hearts is probably, when I was away from home travelling for a long time , he thought this time he won’t have me around for Rakhi whic h was the first time ever it would have actually happened, but then I surprised him by flying down early morning on that occasion especially just to be with him.

WELLNESS

Sore today, Strong Tomorrow

Think about the natural fitness that occurs during our childhood years. A healthy, active child typically isn’t spending time on treadmills or in the gym lifting free weights. Instead, children are running and playing. They’re moving around but in manners that they enjoy. In fact, many young children will seek out physical activity if you let them. In some cases, it’s difficult to get them to stop moving around! Then once they’re introduced to the sedentary ways of today’s world as they become teenagers surrounded by computer games and TV shows. They start adopting habits that too often persist into adulthood. Their former play time is overtaken by time spent sitting on the couch; their only fitness-related activity might be when they attend school gym sessions. This brings us to where we are today with our definition of ‘fitness’. For many people, going to the gym fully encompasses all the fitness we get in our life. We have desk jobs where we stay sedentary for 8 hours a day and have other demands of our time afterwards that don’t include getting out and getting active. Our evenings may also involve little activity, turning in for bed after sitting down to watch TV for a few hours while consuming high-calorie processed foods. Rishitha Koruturu who was crowned ‘Miss Hyderabad’ at the ‘Trends Miss Hyderabad 2017’ is also a fitness freak. In an interview with us she has shared everything about her work out routine which might motivate you or offer few tricks that might be of help to you.

Describe your ideal way of working out. When it comes to fitness according to me, the key is consistency. My ideal way of working out is doing it at least 5 days a week. I like to make sure I do strength training, targeting each muscle group on each day and incorporate some HIIT (high-intensity interval training) cardio as well. It’s important to observe what works best for you, keeping the goals in mind to get into a comfortable and efficient workout plan. How do you maintain your diet and nutrition? When it comes to diet and nutrition I believe it’s important to watch what you eat. We are aware of what food is healthy and what is unhealthy but we choose taste and convenience over goodness. Nutrition is the key to have the body one desires. It gives you the results much faster than working out for hours together in the gym and eating unnecessary junk. All the changes in my diet have totally 62 AUGUST, 2018 - TULIP

changed the way I feel about food, it has made me more passionate about cooking as well. It’s easier to find or make food that only harms your body and much harder to eat right. I only realised this after started to follow a strict diet. If you really want the body you idealise for yourself, then you got to put that effort and eat right. Trust me you will love the changes you see physically and mentally. My diet mainly consists of simple food like brown rice with at least two varieties of healthy curries and different vegetables, Dal and Chicken is a must for protein and in between meals I have lots of fruit, dry fruits and raw veggies. Drinking plenty of water is a great weapon in improving your health and body. Another important thing is, breakfast is a very significant meal in a day and it absolutely needs to be filled with protein to be energetic throughout the day. What workouts do you enjoy the most?

I love strength training especially with weights; it hasn’t been long since I started weight training but trust me the results are not just physical, even mentally I feel so fit. I recommend that everybody start lifting; it will totally change the game for you. My favourite among everything would be legs- deadlifts, squats, kickbacks and I absolutely love leg days.

WELLNESS

How do you keep yourself motivated to work out? As I already said consistently is the key. For the first few days you will have to voluntarily push yourself to hit the gym every day but once you start seeing the changes your body goes through, you automatically get motivated to keep going and push your limits. One very essential thing to keep in mind when working out is to always look at the bigger picture. The reason you’re doing this for and that’s the reason have to be strong. Only working on your body brings out the best version of yourself, it will surprise you; and you will be at your best always, physically and mentally. So keeping those in mind you have to push yourself every single day, every single set and repetition. Only you can push yourself to do better and get better. What made you get into the modelling field? In the beginning, it was just something I wanted to take up as a hobby since everybody around me, advised me to give it a try because of my height (I’m 5’9). When I did my first show I had just turned 19 which was exactly a year ago, I realised that it was where I belong, in front of the camera. I discovered a passion that I never knew I had. Being on the ramp or in front of a camera makes me elated; it gives me a high. After that there was no stopping me, I went on to participate in Trends Miss Hyderabad 2017 and ended up as a winner. Then I was selected in Oppo presents Top Model India, a reality show for upcoming models where Lisa Haydon, AtulKasbekar and Anaitta Shroff were the judges and had groomed us to become top models of India. The show gave me everything I needed to enter the real world of fashion in India. They had 8 girls and 8 guys on the show from all over India. It was a privilege indeed. I’ve done a lot of shows, campaign shoots, and editorials. Each of these experiences is something I immensely enjoy. Now I’m very excited to walk for the biggest fashion show in all of India- Lakmé Fashion Week, I was selected among six new faces from all over India to join and be a part of the main show, and work with the all ace designers from India. Any of your favourite moments in your career I cherish every moment of my career to be very honest, this is what I chose for myself and I love doing it. I love every part of my profession

including the bitter sides. It’s always challenging and it gives me an opportunity to meet so many new people and learn about their lives and their experiences. It gives me a chance to travel and explore. Everything I deem fit for my personality, modelling has provided me with. I love every step of the way, from day 1 to today. It’s been a great journey. Describe yourself in 3 words. I would say happy, adventurous and determined. Happy because I believe positivity should always be the essence of life and I stay positive and optimistic all the time, that is the only way to cope in my field. Adventure has always excited me since my childhood, I’ve always been a tomboy, I would always choose the rocky path. If something is not challenging enough it doesn’t interest me. Determined because I have the willpower of a kid who’s learning to ride a bike. If I set my mind on doing something, I don’t let it go without putting in my 100% that’s what winning means to me, to know I gave it my best shot. What are your goals for the next 5 years? My goals are to step into the international fashion scene and change everybody’s perception about Indian women. I wish to be able to inspire more young women to chase their dreams and not get influenced by what the society or people say. I wish to be on leading magazine covers. I want to be able to influence a positive change, and witness a sign of progress in terms of people’s mind-sets in fields like modelling, or beauty pageants.

A-Rod’s Romantic 49th Birthday Message For Jennifer Lopez: ‘I Love You, Mucho Macha’

Alex Rodriguez is all about making girlfriend Jennifer Lopez‘s 49th birthday her most special one ever. He wrote an effusive Instagram post where he pledged his love, praised her selflessness, and said how every day she is a gift to the world. In his July 24 post, he made sure to include a wide variety of never before seen pics throughout his romance with JLO, from makeup-free shots playing in the ocean to super glam looks before heading out on date nights. The 42-year-old former MLB star wrote, “When we were kids, birthdays were exciting because it was all about the gifts we would be getting. A new bat, dance shoes, maybe a new CD (yes I’m old!). I see firsthand how that’s changed for Jennifer, and how she’s found joy in sharing with others,” A-Rod began in the caption. “For someone who has been about giving everything she has 365 days a year—to our children, our families, the world—I hope today, we can give you all the happiness you deserve. I love you mucho Macha 13,” he added. Aww, is that his pet nickname for his lady? 13 was his jersey number while A-Rod played for the New York Yankees. The photo gallery he assembled of Jennifer is too cute for words. The opening pic shows a make-up free Jen smiling in the ocean while Alex and his daughters can be seen behind her. The next shot is the polar opposite, showing a glammed up JLO in a black shirt opened to show off a sexy black bra with a skin-tight black skirt that flaunts tons of leg. Alex alternates behind the scenes pics of Jen goofing off on a bike with super stunning date night looks where she’s in full JLO mode. Alex made good on Jennifer giving Jennifer the most special day possible, as he filled it with family, friends, champagne and a beach! 68 AUGUST, 2018 - TULIP

Saif Ali Khan says he was nervous about Sara’s Bollywood debut, Kedarnath

She may be a star kid but Sara Ali Khan’s debut project, Kedarnath, has been mired in controversy. Now, that isn’t the best way to launch a career, in Bollywood terms, but here she was, unwittingly caught in a mess. However, thankfully all that is set to change and the film is on course to hit the screens and will release on November 30. A relieved Saif Ali Khan, Sara’s dad, spoke to Bollywood Life, stating that he is confident that his daughter will make a great debut with Kedarnath. When asked if he was anxious about her debut, he said: “I am confident she will do very well. She is in the right hands. I am not nervous anymore.” Kedarnath has been directed by Abhishek Kapoor and will star Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara in the lead roles. Abhishek had earlier directed Fitoor, which starred Katrina Kaif. Kedarnath is said to be a love story, set against the backdrop of the Uttarakhand floods of 2013. The film has had its share of controversies. First, Abhishek was adamant that it be released on the same day as Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero. Thankfully, a needless clash with a big film has now been averted. Later, according to reports, Sara was sent a legal notice for signing her second film, Simmba. Earlier, the film got delayed due to a dispute between Abhishek and film’s former producers, KriArj Entertainment. KriArj later handed over the film’s rights to Abhishek in return for their dues, giving up any production rights on the film. Ronnie Screwvala then joined the film as a producer. Sara’s other film, Simmba, will be directed by Rohit Shetty and will star Ranveer Singh in the lead role. A Hindi adaptation of Telugu superhit film, Temper, the film is backed by Karan Johar. Given the Rohit Shetty stamp, it is expected to be an entertainer. Meanwhile, Sara seems as confident as ever, at least as a star. Her many outings, be it at the gym or with family, are a hit online. Her co-star Sushant Singh Rajput too thinks highly of her and sees the same sort of passion in her that he had when he started out five years, he has said.

Josh Duhamel & Eiza Gonzalez Call It Quits

What looked to be the biggest hot romance of the summer has already fizzled out. Transformers star Josh Duhamel, 45, and stunning actress Eiza Gonzalez, 28, have split after just a few months of dating. It wasn’t that they weren’t wildly attracted to each other, but their successful careers got in the way of a serious romance. “Their work schedules were tough on the relationship,” a source tells PEOPLE. It was Josh’s first public romance since splitting from wife of eight years Fergie in Sept. of 2017. The couple made things official in June on a sushi date in Sherman Oaks, CA after reportedly “quietly” dating” since February before their coming out. Josh actually tipped off the paparazzi that they weren’t together anymore when they photographed him leaving Barry’s Boot Camp in LA on July 23. ‘If you are looking for Eiza, we’re done,” he told the photogs. The breakup sure seemed to come out of nowhere as the couple attended actress Ashley Greene and Paul Khoury‘s July 6 wedding in Northern California together. Eiza is a highly in-demand actress these days, with two films in pre-production and signing on as one of the leads in the upcoming TV series God’s Equation.

Kajal says no to young actors

Other day Saucy seductress Kajal Agarwal was shooting for Bellamkonda Srinivas’ new movie at police station set in Ramanaidu Studios. There came one of the talented directors Jayanth C Paranji with an offer and the actress rejected it outright. After introducing a couple of newcomers earlier, this time Jayanth got another debutant Nilesh, whom he is launching as a hero with “Narendra”. The film has Nilesh himself investing close to 10 crores and he wants a star heroine now to do an item number. Jayanth approached Kajal for the same other day and even said to have offered one crore to do this song whose shooting lasts just for 3 days. Payment wise that is huge for Kajal and film industry folks felt that she will immediately accept it as fat paychecks always tempt her. Surprisingly Kajal said NO to the act, for reasons unknown. An insider revealed that as Kajal’s career is still happening with some heroes offering her heroine roles, she doesn’t want to commit mistakes like Shriya and Tamanna. Both the above said actresses did some unwanted item numbers at the peak of their careers and that led to their downfall.

ENTERTAINMENT Jhanvi Kapoor In SS Rajamouli’s #RRR Project

Jhanvi Kapoor, elder daughter of Bollywood diva Sridevi, got a splendid launch pad in Bollywood as she’s introduced by Bollywood’s top producer-director Karan Johar. After the release of Dhadak, the actress is part of some rumors that she’s be part of a prestigious south film and that too under the direction of ace filmmaker Rajamouli SS. After Baahubali series, Rajamouli announced a multilingual multi-starrer film with NTR and Ram Charan. As per the latest rumors, Jhanvi is likely to grab an opportunity in this crazy project and it’s become the talk of town. As the film titled ‘RRR’ is expected to release in Hindi and other regional languages also, Jhanvi could emerge as the right choice to fetch additional craze to the project. Jhanvi’s godfather in film industry, Karan enjoys a good friendship with director Rajamouli and that’s how this collaboration is expected to workout. But, to work in this project, she must devote no less than 100 days of call sheets. Although it’s a mere speculation in B-town, this collaboration would bring in huge craze to the much-anticipated project of India. Since it’s a just gossip for now, we need to wait and see whether this is going to be true or not!

a to sign Malcom from Barcelona pip AS Rom Bordeaux Brazilian winger Malcom appeared on the brink of joining Roma, but has now instead signed for LaLiga champions Barcelona. Barcelona has announced the €41million signing of Bordeaux winger Malcom, who had appeared set to join Serie A side Roma. The Brazilian attacker has agreed a five-year contract and will undergo his medical tests on Wednesday before joining the Catalan giants on the club’s pre-season tour. Premier League giants Arsenal and Tottenham were reportedly interested in the 21-year-old but Roma emerged as the most likely contenders for his signature this week. Bordeaux announced on Monday that a €40m deal had been agreed with Roma, but Malcom reportedly rejected the switch in favour of a move to Camp Nou. Malcom - who scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 last season - has developed into one of Europe’s hottest talents since his arrival from Corinthians in 2016. ALSO READ | ‘Foolish, exaggerated statements’ - Mesut Ozil’s agent slams Uli Hoeness. And the Brazilian will now have a chance to impress in LaLiga having sealed a move to champions Barca, who also won the Copa del Rey under Ernesto Valverde last term. Malcom joins compatriot Arthur - also uncapped - in the Barca squad for the 2018-19 campaign, with the Catalans getting their title defence underway against Deportivo Alaves on August 19. The deal includes a further €1m in add-ons on top of the intial €41m. Malcom scored 23 goals and contributed 16 assists in 96 games for Bordeaux in his two-and-a-half seasons at the club.

Serena Williams to compete as wild card in Rogers Cup Serena Williams, who gave birth last September and lost in the Wimbledon final 10 days ago, has not competed in Montreal since her run to the semi-finals in 2014. Serena Williams has been given a wild card to compete in next month’s Rogers Cup in Montreal, tournament organisers said on Tuesday. The three-times champion, who gave birth last September and lost in the Wimbledon final 10 days ago, has not competed in Montreal since her run to the semi-finals in 2014 and last played the Rogers Cup in Toronto the following year. “After announcing our player list a few weeks ago, we were only missing Serena to complete our dream tournament,” Rogers Cup tournament director Eugene Lapierre said in a statement. “Serena has impressed everyone with the speed at which she was able to return to a high level of play. She has always been a fighter and she is proving it once again.” Williams returned to competition at Indian Wells in March, where she lost in the third round, but has since looked close to her best and is ranked 27th in the world. The wild card given to Williams, who won the tournament in 2001, 2011 and 2013, is reserved for players who meet specific requirements, including previously having been ranked number one in the world.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Ant man and the Wasp MCU! Just how do they do it? Despite hordes of Marvel films being unleashed on the audience at regular intervals, superhero exhaustion is nowhere in sight. Set after ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and leading up to the events of ‘’Avengers: Infinity War’,’the Ant-man sequel is a thrilling fun ride that engages you emotionally and amuses you with its CGI antics and comic demeanour. The sequel sees Scott Lang smartly juggling between his fatherhood duties, tackling the FBI and a new superhero mission. Though the shrinking ability of the protagonists is the film’s USP, what lies at the heart of this film is the father-son bond between Casey-Scott and Hank-Hope. Peyton Reed lets human relationships drive the narrative. Not once does he allow the ‘juicy tech stuff’ to own his film, which is refreshing and perhaps the reason why Marvel films command such a massive fan base across the globe. Michael Pena’s superb presence and rapid-fire monologue coupled with a rant on truth serum turns out to be the film’s funniest scene. However, what does feel underwhelming are the ‘villains’ or the lack of real ones per se. Overall, ‘Ant-Man’ and the Wasp is the Marvel underdog that scores big, replicating the nature of the ongoing Football World Cup.

Dhadak Set in Udaipur, the story begins with young love blossoming in the midst of politics and a dominant class system. Parthavi (Janhvi) is the daughter of a local politician Ratan Singh (Ashutosh Rana), while Madhukar (Ishaan) is the son of a restaurant owner who comes from lower economic strata. Against societal norms, Madhu and Parthavi fall in love, and when her influential family finds out, they tear the lovers apart. The spirited young couple still find a way to elope. The film moves from Udaipur to Mumbai to Kolkata, which is a departure from the original. It’s an engaging journey, but the treatment isn’t consistent throughout. With Dhadak, Shashank Khaitan steps out of the ‘Dulhania’ mould for the first time. Owing to the source material, Dhadak is without doubt, his darkest film. He presents the naïve romance with sensitivity, even while fusing the story with ample dramatic highs. Oddly, for the subject at hand, the film looks a little too polished and slick. For a film that stems from harsh reality, this glossed over aspect makes it unbelievable. When it comes to the performances, Ishaan’s personality has the energy and zest of a newcomer, while his performance displays the cool confidence of a seasoned actor. He is pitch perfect in dramatic scenes and his puppy eyes keep the innocence of this love story alive. Chinna Babu The story of Chinna Babu revolves around a big family, headed by Penugonda Rudraraju (Sathyaraj). Despite having five daughters with his wife (Viji Chandrasekhar), he marries another lady (Bhanupriya) so he can have a son. He hopes of fulfilling his wishes to father a baby boy even in his 50s.His wish comes true in the form of Krishnama Raju (Karthi), who despite not being very educated, goes on to become a farmer. Two girls from his family (played by Priya Bhavani Shankar and Arthana) wish to marry him; however he falls in love with another girl (Sayyeshaa). His love leads to dispute and misunderstandings amongst family members, eventually with most of them ending up disliking Krishnama Raju. The few in town who always aimed for his downfall utilise the situation. Now, he has to not just help his family understand his choice but also fight against those working against his family. Chinna Babu is watchable for those who love drama, filled with emotional sequences on family bonding. However, there are a few moments in the film where the intensity of melodrama might feel a little exaggerated. Karthi of course steals the show as a proud farmer hopeful of the state of agriculture in the country.

ARIES March 21 - April 19

You’re known as the pioneer of the Zodiac, dear Ram. Like Star Trek, going where you’ve never been before is your thing. Lead, follow or get out of my way is your mantra. Once you’ve met the challenge, it’s on to the next thing. Details and efficiency are usually not your forte. Yet on August 10 when Mars, your guardian angel planet, cycles into Virgo, the most productive sign in the zodiac, you’ll need to slow down, so you can catch up with yourself. You get this chance once every two years to dot all your I’s and cross all your T’s to make sure that your desires manifest. And while paying attention to detail is not your thing, you’ll find new excitement and challenge in taking time to make sure what you’ve created is useful and of service to others. Definitely, a departure from your usual fare, dear Aries, but one that can make your dreams come true.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

Forecast For

AUGUST 2018

CANCER June 21 - July 22

Cancer (Jun. 21 – Jul. 22) You’ve been learning a lot about where your true security and safety come from, dear Moonchild, and that it’s high time to be your own very best mommy and daddy. You are the most emotional sign in the zodiac and with Saturn transiting in Cancer (which only happens every thirty years) you feel a greater self-discipline and can be more responsible for what you’re feeling, yes, ALL your feelings. And with Venus entering your sign on the 7th, you can learn to love and appreciate your nurturing and sensitive side without feeling that sense of overwhelm that often goes along with a strong emotional nature. Your relationships get a real shot in the arm as new and exciting people to come into your life around the 13th when Venus and Uranus dance cheek to cheek. Be open to new ways of being, as you open to new avenues of creative self-expression.

You finally have clarity about what you really love, value and appreciate and what brings you pleasure. On August 2, Venus, your guardian angel planet, returns to 26 degrees of Gemini, where she was when she retrograded on May 17. It’s been a long haul, dear Taurus, and has taken every bit of your patience, persistence and determination to hang in there with yourself. Venus finally completes her four-month journey in Gemini, the sign of communication, and new talents in speaking and writing may have emerged lately. Yet in the last few months, you’ve been initiated into the depths of relationships as Pluto has been retrograde in your 7th house, the house of partnership. If things have felt out of control and the word ‘powerless’ comes to mind, know that it’s about trusting and surrendering to a power greater than yourself. If you do, then by the end of the month when Pluto moves forward again, you will have discovered a deeper, more rewarding and meaningful connection in your significant relationships.

Normally invulnerable and reserved by nature, dear mountain goat, your relationships require you to show your feelings and your sensitivity now. It may be a stretch at first but you’ll get the hang of it. Just don’t take it on as another obligation, should or have to. And although usually reserved, disciplined and somewhat businesslike in nature, you may even like it. Even though it’s uncharacteristic and may feel uncomfortable at first, allow your softer side to emerge as you nurture others and allow yourself to be nurtured. And with the Leo New Moon on the 15th lighting up your house of intimacy, decide on which levels you want to merge more deeply with others… psychologically, intellectually, philosophically, sexually and financially.

This is your month to shine! You are the star, the producer and the director of the Zodiac. No one knows more about their magical inner child than you, dear Lion. When it comes to love, generosity of spirit and an open heart, you’re a natural. You instinctively know that when you’re having fun, your heart is wide open. You’re easy to spot in any crowd with that big Cheshire grin from ear to ear. It’s time to celebrate you and celebrate life, especially around August 15, at the Leo New Moon. When you decide what you want to create at your own New Moon, ask yourself two important questions: Is this fun and can I express more of me? And if you can answer a resounding yes to both questions, then GO FOR IT… whatever it is.

Even though Pluto, the planet of power and transformation and your guardian angel planet, doesn’t move forward again until August 30, you’ll be feeling the magic of rebirth all through this month. It’s time to come out of the cave you’ve been in since March 24 when Pluto began its retrograde journey. This has been a time of healing and regeneration for you, dear Scorpio. As the month goes on, it should become clearer where you are with true power versus control in your relationships. You’ve had five months to take inventory of your special talents and abilities, consequently, you’ll feel more in charge of your professional destiny as the New Moon in Leo on the 15th falls in your house of career. This is a great time to ask for the raise and apply for that promotion. You know when you are clear and focused on what you want, it’s hard for anyone to say no.

It’s been a bit challenging for you this year, dear Archer, with Jupiter, your ruling planet in Virgo, the sign of efficiency, productivity and minutia because you prefer the BIG picture. As the eternal student of the zodiac, you have probably honed certain skills and learned new techniques in your job. The adventure for you is in the details now. And with Pluto in your sign moving forward on the 30th, you’re really feeling your oats now and are unstoppable as you become more comfortable with expressing your power. Relationships may have given you quite a run for your money as Venus has been in your 7th house since April, and spent six of those weeks going backwards. But not to worry, your natural optimism and philosophical nature help you see the meaning and purpose in every encounter.

With expansive, benevolent Jupiter, one of your two guardian angel planets (Neptune is the other one) transiting your 7th house for the last year, the spotlight has been on your connections with others. If you know of a workshop or seminar on relationships, sign up for it, because the more you can learn about what really attracts you and why the happier you’ll be. If a committed romantic partnership is something you desire, and as an idealistic, romantic Pisces I would be surprised if you didn’t, the Universe has heard your call and it’s time for you to cash in because you deserve it. You are now reaping the seeds that you have sown in relationships over the last twelve years. Believe that you can have the true give and take in a spiritual relationship that you have always desired. TULIP - AUGUST, 2018 79
