FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Because Good Memories Are Meant To Be It is strange the way fond retentions of past refuse to leave our minds. Stranger, if we know we are going to face those moments again in time to come. Quite certainly, they do! It’s their nature and they are extremely powerful. They have their own way of affecting us. We are what and how we think, acquire and react. Thoughts indeed, are like magnets. Attaining an object of desire instigates with a thought or two. No matter the time or distance – the deeper and longer they persist in our minds, we feel nearer to those and they seem a reality in return. They seem to strike in before our eyes more often. I look at this phenomenon as – Universal Vibes. They will hit the target, no matter how far it may be from us and will come back to you – only to shrink the distance. And what’s meant to happen will always happen, irrespective of distance, time or nature of occurrence. The cover story is all about Bollywood actresses quoting the importance of being fit and healthy. Take a look at what they follow for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they stay in shape. Choose the colours which are in for this Summer and decorate your interiors with a list of premium interior outlets in town. How real are reality shows? Get an analysis on the kind of phases the participants have to go through, in order to survive. Indulge yourself in sports or summer activities. Check your list of summer camps offering courses for various fields of interest. Tulip introduces a new category – What’s New, under which the readers get their updates on newly opened restaurants / stores / malls and salon’s. THREE THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS ISSUE There is something unique about Vizag which makes it a perfect travel destination anytime in a year for family or friends. The long stretch of lush greenery and the feeling of being closer to nature; are certain to bring your mind and soul, to a state of ecstasy. Voices of Hyderabad’s then Sultans still echoes in and around the historic monument of Taramati Baradari. Equipped with modern facilities for entertainment and leisure, this is now a contemporary tourist location. Beyond sporting white often during Summers, sunglasses are catching up in the list as essential accessories, for this season in particular. More than a matter of fashion, they are vital protective necessities. Extending about that, spas are offering exclusive Summer packages – coolest ways to revitalize and restore.

MAN SENTENCED

HUGH JACKMAN

For Stalking Halle Berry

In Prisoners

H O L L Y W O O D

The hunk and the sexy will be starring in the Denis Villenueve’s Prisoners for Alcon Entertainment. It revolves around a small-town carpenter named Keller (Jackman), whose young daughter and

best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, Keller takes the law into his own hands, but in the process runs up against the big city detective assigned to the case. Sounds like - Taken! Bummer Production is slated to start in 2013, after Hugh does his new Wolverine movie. Here’s what the producers had to say – ‘We are ecstatic that Hugh will take the lead in this exciting thriller. We can think of no better Keller - an everyman who rises to an occasion, most of us could not imagine possible. Denis’ rare directing gifts are superbly matched to this material, that is both challenging and explores complex themes in a commercially appealing narrative.’

A man accused of literally scaling the fence of Halle Berry’s home will remain in jail after pleading no contest to stalking the Oscar winning actress. The deputy district attorney said the man was sentenced to serve 386 days in county jail Thursday, but he has already served half of the term. The 28 year old was placed on five years of probation, a year of psychological counseling and ordered to stay away from the actress for the next ten years. Richard Franco, was arrested outside Berry’s home in July after repeatedly coming onto her property. On one occasion, the actress stated in a sworn declaration that Franco attempted to enter her kitchen but she was able to lock the door before he got inside. However, now he couldn’t leave well enough alone and quit stalking the actress. He was arrested and for good reason. Everyone has the right to feel safe in his or her own home, regardless if he or she is an actress or just an ordinary person. She told sources, she feels a little better knowing the man who was stalking her, is now in jail. And yet she doesn’t know how she will feel when he gets out.

SANDRA BULLOCK

Adopting One More Child

Already the mother of two-year-old son Louis, Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is reportedly adopting a second child. Or at least, in the process of trying to. Sandra and thenhusband Jesse James had planned to adopt Louis together, but in the aftermath of their shocking split, she took on sole custody of the boy. She has planned to expand her brood since adopting Louis back in early 2010. A source revealed – ‘Sandra has always planned to have more than one child. She feels now is a good time for a new baby to be welcomed into the family. Louis is a little young to understand that he is going to be a big brother. However, Sandy is trying to get him ready for the transition. The source adds that Sandra has filed the adoption papers now as it may take a long time to process. She has no preference on the sex of the baby. It took her about 18 months to finally get Louis and there is no time table as to when she will get the second child. Sandy’s lawyer told her it could take a year to complete the process. She doesn’t care whether or not it’s a boy or girl. She just wants a healthy.’

RANVEER SINGH

Injured On The Sets

B O L L Y W O O D

Ranveer Singh, who plays the male lead in Lootera apparently, injured his back on the sets of the film. As per reports, Ranveer Singh hurt his back on the sets of Lootera and has been advised bed rest for two weeks. Not much is known about the nature of the injury as yet. Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha play the lead roles, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. It is a joint film production venture by filmmakers such as Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl and Madhu Mantena. Ranveer Singh, known to be a charmer, had earlier danced to the tunes of Band Baaja Baaraat for the huge crowd that gathered outside his hotel in Purulia District, Bengal where he is shooting for the movie. A source close to Ranveer Singh said that the actor was feeling pain since 3-4 days. The problem is expected to be in Ranveer’s back which was injured while he was climbing a mountain. However the actor continued to shoot, unless the situation got worse.

BEBO CUTS HERSELF

From The World!

Kareena Kapoor’s friends apparently got very worried since she cut herself completely from all friends and family for the past few weeks. It later came to be known that the actress was busy shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine and did not want to be disturbed! Kareena Kapoor reportedly went out of reach and was not accessible at all, for days together since her mobile phone was also switched off. Bebo’s friends were so concerned of her well being that they did everything possible to find out where she was! As per sources, Kareena Kapoor was so involved shooting for an emotional scene in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine that, she decided to disassociate herself completely from the world and had thus switched off her cell phone throughout the shoot. It is also being rumored that close friends of Kareena have nicknamed her Aamir since her perfection and dedication to her profession is somewhat like that of Aamir Khan. Heroine is a journey in a heroine’s life in the contemporary world. It’s going to portray how an actress reaches the top and how her life goes through ups and downs. There are lot of catharsis and traumas shown in the film. Arjun Rampal would play lead in the film opposite Kareena Kapoor.

ALLU ARJUN

GENELIA

In Trouble?

Chief metropolitan magistrate court directed the Saifabad police to register and investigate a criminal case against a real estate company and five others including popular actress Genelia D’souza. The court direction comes in the wake of a petition filed by a senior citizen, a retired government official. The petitioner contended that Sudarshan along with other directors and employees of the so-called company, told him that Genelia was one of the directors and brand ambassadors of the company and even shown him brochures displaying her pictures. The petitioner said he had paid Rs. 48 lakhs on three different dates in 2008 towards purchase of two plots and construction of duplex-house. However, the petitioner was neither given possession of plots nor did the company construct duplex-house. ‘Despite repeated requests and running from pillar to post, none of the representatives of the company responded,’ the petitioner said. The petitioner also alleged that the director of the company, Sudarshan Kumar Reddy had abused him in filthy language and threatened to kill him, when he insisted for return of money. It was then he realized that he had been duped by the company which had closed its office, the petitioner said. 16 APRIL, 2012

JEEV MILKHA SINGH

Andalucian Open

Jeev Milkha Singh made the weekend action as he finished the second round with a three-under 69 to claim one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Andalucian Open. Jeev, who had an even par 72 in the first round earlier, is now three-under 141 and tied for 31st. However, Jeev’s compatriot SSP Chowrasia had two bogeys on his second nine and missed the cut by two. Chowrasia (75) finished at two-over, following his first round 71. The cut came at even par and Chowrasia was two shots off the mark. Meanwhile, 29-year-old Eduardo de la Riva birdied the difficult final hole at Aloha Golf Club to take a one shot lead at the halfway stage. He is followed by some well-established names, including 48-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez (68) at seven-under in tied second place with Tommy Fleetwood (69). Also in the bunch in second place is European Tour’s youngest-ever winner, the 18-year-old Matteo Manassero (73). Manassero had a record equaling 64 in first round. Starting on the tenth, Jeev birdied the 10th and 12th holes before bogeying the 13th. He quickly picked two more birdies on the 14th and 16th and turned in three-under, which improved with a birdie on first.

KLINSMANN DOUBTS ENGLAND

Euro - 2012

German legend Jurgen Klinsmann has expressed his doubts in England’s ability to win Euro 2012. In a manner similar to previous tournaments, the English national side are once again in the mix of possible teams to triumph at the European Championships later this year. However, having choked one too many times in recent years, Klinsmann is skeptical that the present England team have what it takes to win the upcoming event. ‘England has a strong squad before every major tournament on paper, but they have never found the right chemistry in the team and they fail more on account of themselves than their opponents. The current United States manager has no reservations toward his former charges Germany, believing that only the Spanish national side would pose a threat to them. We are hoping to lift the cup, the team has strengthened over the years, having been underpinned by the younger generation, from [Mesut] Ozil and [Sami] Khedira to [Andre] Schurrle, [Marco] Reus and [Mario] Gotze’ - Klinsmann revealed. The quality is there to stand up at the crucial moment. But Spain remain the team to beat. They are still number one, the world’s best.

SACHIN GREATER THAN DON

Nasser Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time ahead of Sir Donald Bradman. ‘Sir Donald Bradman was great but for me the greatest batsman to have ever played the game is Sachin Tendulkar,’ Hussain said. Former England captain Nasser Hussain said the recent criticism of the Indian team is unnecessary because the world champions are still a force to reckon with. You have Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh! And you - till recently - had (Rahul) Dravid,’ he added. Hussain also mentioned that critics and cricket fans in India need to see what India had a decade ago and how India has performed over the years in international tournaments. They are cricket’s greatest ambassadors in the world. Hussain attributed India’s World Cup win last year to the IPL, saying - ‘IPL has given India, players like Suresh Raina who became a massive factor in ODIs. However, he cautioned India against overplaying and also not producing quality bowlers. India always had quality batsmen but where are the bowlers? Where are they coming from?’ He further said - excessive cricket was taking its toll on the national selection. ‘Most Indian players are overcooked,’ he said, adding there was a need for the cricket board to give adequate rest to the seniors.

A Day From Samia Alam Khan’s Diary.. APRIL, 2012 29

TULIP

LIFESTYLE

I AM PASSOINATE AND DEDICATED TO MY WORK

FIRST THINGS FIRST I see that my kids go to school and husband off to work. Then the first hour which follows, is a personal time for me, which includes a mix of spirituality and health - I say my prayers and then get on to the treadmill at home and while exercising, I listen to my choice of music. This refreshes me and sets the tone for my day ahead. Then I prepare for a long day ahead, which usually means that while I have my morning cuppa and scan through the papers, I also have some essential me time. With regards to work, I check my diary which sets the pace for the day - anything that spilled over from the previous day that needs to get prioritized, things which were scheduled for the day and other things to catch up on.

My USP is that I customize clothes according to the clients’ needs. Most of the designs in my exhibitions are usually re-ordered. I work via emails. My clients place orders from the selection they make from my exhibitions. I then customize clothes according to their preferences. The fabrics and styles are based on my design, but I do a little bit of alterations in design, according to the needs of my clients. I am very organized. I am a very diary-schedule person. My passion for clothes is what inspired me to start my own line. I customize clothes for friends and relatives.

TYPICAL AFTERNOON The afternoon includes interacting with my clients over phone or coordinating with workers and giving instructions. Then I usually set off to the market place to buy fabrics, laces and other accessories which I have to deliver to the workshop. If I have a social lunch, I plan this shopping around that place and try my best to attend both. At about 16:30 hours, I am back home waiting for the kids to come back from school.

TIME WITH KIDS

STYLE STATEMENT

Focus on domestic activity is something which I never let go. Its kids time for an hour or hour and a half. I look into their school work. Their activities like sports training and yoga are organized. Evening is usually at home, coordinating with designers for new trends and design, design clothes, send and receive emails. During late evenings, the whole family is at home. It’s usually family time, as the dinner is prepared. Dinner is one meal and we insist upon having this one meal together discussing our respective days and how it spanned out. Right before bed time, I usually read or watch some TV and update my diary for the next day.

Everyone needs to find their personality by experimenting with styles, cuts and colours. You can be dressed from head to foot in designer stuff and still feel uncomfortable and not put together. Experiment with trends but stick to your design philosophy. I believe in investing in classic pieces of clothing, jewellery and accessories which will outlive fashion trends and form the basics of a wardrobe over which everything else is constructed. The trick is to find products which can be mixed and matched and used imaginatively. Always construct your look on one or two main things. It could be a lovely pair of shoes and a statement ring rather than wearing everything that is in your accessory box.

30 APRIL, 2012

I was always interested in clothes and styling. My business was born out of my passion for clothes. Together with my partner, this year we’ve created a line of clothing which will be retailed under our name - Studio Aayra. The idea behind this brand is to focus on a fusion line of clothing. The design intention is a chic combination of Indo/Pak/western look and fashion with comfort is what we usually aim for. The best thing about my profession is it allows me to do what I enjoy the most. I try not to get overloaded with work. For this reason, my partner and I are currently concentrating on holding exhibitions which showcases designer clothing from across the country 3-4 times a year. The reason being, we can bring out a line that’s fresh and exclusive. Also this means we have enough time to bring together a collection that is truly unique and not repetitive. That’s the way I like it! I want to enjoy what I do and I don’t want to lose the essence of my passion by commercializing it to an extent that it loses its charm.

SUCCESS MANTRA I believe that man is a creation who isn’t easy to please. Success and happiness according to me are deeply entwined and success is never the end. For me, it’s more important to be content. To see my family happy and in good health is very important to me. To see my children grow into confident and accomplished, young citizens, makes me happy. We are a complete first day-first show kind of couple. I am very spiritual and faith is the one thing that I firmly believe, helps you in being sane and grounded. I am a foodie and love trying different cuisines. I like to cook and more than that, I like to feed people. My friends tell me that I feed them till they can move no more! I also love chocolates and when I travel, one large bag is always reserved for this sweet temptation. I love clothes and wearing lovely fabrics makes me feel good. This led me to design my own clothes. I also love accessorizing and I feel the right shoes and bags can elevate a look. All this obviously, is a peek into my love for shopping. Forget retail therapy, even window shopping releases endorphins into my system. My motto is - When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping. - As told to Aditya Tej APRIL, 2012 31

MOVIE REVIEW

MOVIES IN APRIL Housefull 2 Director: Sajid Khan

M O V I E S

Cast: Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Asin, Jacqueline Fernandez, Rishi Kapoor and others It is the story of four fathers, four daughters and four prospective son-in-laws and as the second half of the title suggests, they are the dirty dozen. Each father wants his daughter to marry the richest son-in-law, each daughter thinks she is marrying the richest son-inlaw. Each son-in-law is pretending to be the richest son-in-law. Each character is flawed, unscrupulous and extremely entertaining. The good news for the audience is that none of these people can stand each other and all of them are under one roof, in one house as the first half of the title suggests – Housefull.

THIS MEANS WAR All is fair in love and war. And all is fair in love, war and dating. Or so it seems, for FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy) who are CIA agents and best buddies with a dual mission - win over the woman they both claim to be falling in love with Lauren (Reese Witherspoon) and keep the friendship going, no matter who gets the girl. Now it’s just when the gentlemen’s agreement goes kaput, does all the war (of words) in the movie come into play. In fact, more than who wins the girl, it’s the how-they-win-the-girl that keeps the funny bone tickled on and off. Take for instance FDR Foster who gets his knowledge of Gustav Klimt mixed up with the objectionable and Tuck who puts up a fake action stunt to show he is not ‘just the caring’ type. Not to miss out is Trish (Chelsea Handler) who unabashedly concludes the best way to fall for a guy is to check him out in bed! As for Reese, watch this woman capable of choosing her own movies go weak in the knee when it comes to choosing the two men chasing her. For the rest, it’s over to the real war - yes, there’s even a warlord on the lose who gives you a couple of short-lived action cuts - you don’t really seem to care about. But then you do care about who gets the girl in this rom-com. Who? Well, as the CIA agents on the run put it - May the best man winfor the lady! AGENT VINOD Bollywood has seen very few spy films of late, at least not any memorable ones, but that doesn’t imply that the audience will accept a below-average story. However, it is the screenplay, also by the same writers, is where Agent Vinod really falters. While the writer-director Sriram Raghavan has made sure that the scenes are slickly shot and executed but at times, they hardly make any sense. Although this does give a feeling of anticipation, the audience soon realize that there is nothing earth-shattering that is going to be revealed in the plot. Agent Vinod’s characterization is such that the viewer is given no reason to root for him, as he goes on about his exploits. On the other hand, Iram’s character is supposed to gain the viewer’s sympathy, but even that attempt falls flat on its face. A few scenes of the spy games between Vinod and Iram and a handful of action sequences (including an imaginatively choreographed one with the song Raabta in the background), entertain, but since the basic plot is very simple and the screenplay unnecessarily convoluted, the viewer soon lose interest in the proceedings. The drama just lacks pace just before and after the interval. The climax turns out to be unintentionally funny. The dialogues are alright.

Tezz Director: Priyadarshan Cast: Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Mohanlal, Kangna Ranaut, Sameera Reddy, Boman Irani, Zayed Khan, Avika Gor and Priyanka Chopra. Both are pitted against each other and both are pitted against time. Chimpanzee Director: Alastair Fothergill Disney nature takes movie-goers deep into the forests of Africa with Chimpanzee, a new true life adventure introducing an adorable young chimpanzee named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Oscar’s playful curiosity and zest for discovery showcase the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family - including his mom, Isha and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy - navigate the complex territory of the forest. The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimpanzees, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. Titanic 3D Director: James Cameron Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet Set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the unsinkable Titanic, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era the ship of dreams which ultimately carried over 1,500 people to their death in the ice cold waters of the North Atlantic, in the early hours of April 15, 1912. Lush rice fields, thickly wooded forests, sugar cane and coffee plantations and waterfalls make this spectacular piece of land, a wonderful tourist destination. The valley is inhabited by about 19 tribes - the women, with their saris draped unusually, the ends tied over one shoulder. Bright orange, red and purple flowers decorate their hair.

The thick forest here form a canopy that even prevents sunrays from entering the forest over undulating rocks in the deep forests. The tourists can spend a night camp in jungle, surrounded by streams with forest guards taking care of security aspects. A special non – vegetarian dish (Bamboo chicken) is arranged for group tours. Activities like butterfly watching, cycle riding, trekking are sure to make your vacation memorable.

From room to room, guests are greeted by such realistic sculptures of tribals in their natural habitat, that on many occasions, visitors take them for real! While a tribal lady cooks the evening meal, another feeds her child and a male tribal watches guard over his family, spear in hand. The weapons of the tribes form a large part of this fascinating, but small museum. Their chunky silver jewellery, ornate and elegant, is showcased in the main atrium of the museum.

BORRA CAVES These caves are said to be a natural wonders, which came into being over one million years ago. The river Gostani flows outside the caves and is believed to flow over a heap of limestone deposits, giving it a foamy or milky appearance. The perennial water flow over a period of time results in the formation of caves. Stalagmites are formed due to water percolating from the roof containing calcium bi-carbonate and other minerals. Similarly, Stalactites are also formed and because of their different shapes, tourist and locals have given different names to them. Thoughtfully, 64 sodium vapour lamps help to show your way around the caves, which cover an area of 1 sq km.

PAINTING Most people think that at one time or another they would love to draw or paint. Many think that they can’t and lack the confidence to even try. Art, for some talented people, is a natural born gift. Let’s face it! Some artists with no training are fantastic. If you are enthusiastic, you probably will go from strength to strength. Painting is something you need to be in the mood for, although if you are stressed it can be soothing. It is gratifying when you paint your imagination and see what transpires; but you may just stop and sketch something roughly on your travels or even copy something that grabs your attention. Surprisingly it is quite good to start with oils. In some ways this is easier to handle. If you do not find your painting satisfactory, paint over it and start all over again. Or simply scrape the paint off.

SPOORTHY - THE INSPIRATION INSTITUTE Learn how to paint! They teach how to do painting from kids to adults. MUSIC Music is among the most popular of all activities. Even if you can’t play a single note, music is powerful enough to go above and beyond any limitations that you may impose on yourself. There really are no boundaries when it comes to picking up an instrument and learning to play. Anyone can do it if you have the patience and the willingness to learn. It’s a good idea to try more than one type of instrument in order to know what you really prefer and what feels the most natural to you. It’s best not to make your decision on something like how cool a certain guitar looks on your favourite rock star. TARAMATI BARADARI History, Salvation and Tourism…

There is an element of romance, particularly where royalty and history coexist. Across the ages, stories are told about kings who have fallen under the spell of a courtesan. The middle ages, in particular, are rife with romance and grace, and they are especially obvious in India where it is customary for rulers to have harems... aramati Baradari is one such monument which was a king’s ode to one of his pet projects. The story goes with the seventh Sultan of Golconda - Abdullah Qutub Shah and two ravishing dance girls and courtesans, Taramati and Premamati, who would often dance on ropes tied between their pavilion at the Sultan’s balcony. Among the two, Abdullah Qutub Shah’s favorite was Taramati, much like how his grandfather, the founder of Hyderabad, had Bhagmati as his favored courtesan. It was said that the prince enjoyed Tamarati’s voice so much that he created a palace with such fine acoustics that her voice would still reach him at Golconda Fort. That palace stands today as Taramati Baradari, one of Hyderabad’s more popular monument from the Qutub Shahi dynasty. The monument itself is comprised of a music hall with twelve entrance ways which served as the auditorium. Its hall is semi-arched and huge, opening into an art gallery that also doubles as a banquet hall whenever the need arises. Perfect attention was devoted to the acoustics of the palace, making it comparable to the one in the area of Bala Hissar, in Afghanistan. Due to the monument’s good acoustics and its history (after all, Tamarati was known to dedicate her life to music and dance), Taramati Baradari is a monument that has become dedicated to classical music and folk art dance forms. The entire monument is devoted to the art forms which were prevalent here in those days. Taramati Masjid, just outside the palace area was used by Qutb Shahi rulers and their nobles. Its facade has three arches; the central arch is

higher and slightly projected. Qibla niches in the west wall are surrounded by rows of small arches. Directly below the entrance arches is a basement platform consisting of a series of arched cells.

‘To make sure that the sound would not be diluted by the heavy population of the surrounding area, the Taramati Baradari was placed on top of a hill.’ Tourism is taking great steps to make this place a great tourist spot and they have been very successful in it. This place is favoured by all tourists and the entire ambience here is totally replete with a lot of vibration and musical influence. The cultural complex here is a great feeling and the experience here is actually an effort to bridge the past with the present. There are many people who come here to see the soiree and the innumerable performances here which are held at intervals. The open sky is witness to the excitement of the people here and the auditorium is a huge hit today with the tourists. There are around 1500 people who can sit here. The stone seats add to the beauty of the ancient past. There are many areas which serve as food courts. The tourism department also promotes a lot of stories which link the Sultan and the mistress Taramati. There is a story where it is said that she used to sing for the travelers.

Kapalabhati is a breathing technique used specifically for cleansing. If we have a lot of mucus in the air passages or feel tension and blockages in the chest, it is often helpful to breathe quickly. In this practice, we deliberately breathe faster and at the same time use only abdominal breathing, that is, diaphragmatic, not chest breathing. In Kapalabhati, the breath is short, rapid and strong. We use the lungs as a pump, creating so much pressure as they expel the air that all the waste is removed from the air passages, from the lungs up through the nostrils.

HOW TO DO IT -

Kapalabhati is done in a sitting posture. The thumb rule is that the concentration must be on “exhaling”. Inhaling does not need attention.

Exhale and make sure that the abdominal muscles are contracted with each exhalation.

Exhaling must be continued without paying any attention to inhaling all the time.

Exhale as long as you can.

Kapalbhati pranayama is recommended to be practiced for 10 to 15 exhalations. If one feels comfortable then the exhalation can be increased to a maximum of 30 to 40 exhalation.

Short breaks can be taken for a while at the beginning of Kapalbhati pranayama till one gets habitual of it.

Kapalabhati helps control Obesity, Diabetes, Kidney and prostate diseases, heart, brain and lung problems and many other diseases

BENEFITS -

Cleans, invigorates, warms and prevents illness and allergies. This breath control is a series of rapid, forced exhales followed by passive inhales. Yoga experts suggest doing it at the beginning of a yoga session. In Kundalini practice, Kapalabhati breath is sometimes done while holding poses.

Choose a cross-legged position for sitting and make sure that you feel comfortable.

Start with deep inhaling 2 or 3 times and exhale through the nose.

Inhale till you feel comfortable followed by sharp and forceful exhalations through the nose.

Make sure that the belly goes in with each exhalation.

Concentration must be on passive inhalations and the cycle of forceful exhales and passive inhales must be continued at a fast pace, so that the belly is pumping continuously.

Do three rounds of thirty breaths each, coming back to deep inhales and exhales between each round.

Come back to normal breathing if you feel lightheaded at any time.

SAHIB SINDH SULTAN

From the opulent mansions where hordes of servants scurried around, to the elaborate meals that involves several courses and were almost rituallike, every moment is devoted to self-indulgence. The trains for the affluent are plush affairs, with huge sections, generous upholstery and rich food. To flag off the meal, there is Kakori Kebab that comes with cheese and mashed potato sandwiched between the slices. The best part about the experience is the stimulated sounds of the moving train, with a horn tooting now and then for good measure. Come here and savour the sumptuous culinary journey.

SIGNATURE DISH – Paneer Tikka (Indian cuisine) - Marinated paneer with tomato gravy, which makes a delightful dish for a formal dinner). TIMINGS – 12:00 – 15:00 and 19:00 – 23:00 LOCATION – City Centre Mall, Road No.1, Banjara Hills, Ph No. 66570000

MING’S COURT

The sleek interiors are not too fussy, while the service is prompt and courteous. The cuisine served here is Chinese, more specifically; Chinese tweaked a bit to suit the Indian palate, unlike the Indo-Chinese served in other joints. The Manchow soup is a good start to the meal, enticing the palate with its sharp sour and spicy aroma. The Chili Stick Veggies will be well liked by those who live on greens, while meat eaters will enjoy the Pukhet Fish, consisting of sautéed filets and fiery Prawn pepper salt. The Ginger Capsicum Rice balances the flavours of its two main ingredients well and those with taste buds which favour mellower flavors, will find the pleasure in Bamboo Rice with Black Mushrooms. What’s great about this place is that it goes a long way in trying to please its patrons. Watch out for your fortune cookie at the end of the meal, which always bears good tidings and leave with a smile.

NEETA LULLA BAGS NATIONAL AWARD The name is famous among the fashionistas of the world. From simplicity to royalty, Neeta Lulla has all to her credit. The expert of Indian Fashion has bagged the National Award for the fourth time for her Marathi film, Bal Gandharva. This is the first time you have taken up a Marathi movie. What inspired you? How was your experience? I have done Marathi television earlier. I have designed clothes for Shivaji and Banjirao Mastani. It is always the script that inspires me to take new projects. The script and the character inspired me. The performing spirit of the character really inspired me. The movie is based on the true story of a Marathi theater artist, he is known as one of the fore fathers of Marathi theaters. He was also a fashion icon of his times. I was designing clothes for a man who played the role of a women and I didn’t want it to go wrong as I wanted him to look believable. A regular 9 yard sari wasn’t enough, so I had to fuse 4 saris to create the drape. I also made the actor lose weight, so he looked real. You are known for your research before starting a new project. How do you do it? When you hear a script of a particular era which is based on history you have information available on 56 APRIL, 2012

the internet and libraries. Libraries are my biggest sources. If the story is based in a foreign country, I go there and do research there. I find out about the fabrics related to that era, what kind of colour schemes were used then, the motifs, etc. I then combine it with what would be acceptable today. You are an icon to several designers. Who is your icon? I think in 26 years somewhere down the line, I lost the plot to look up to someone. Yes, but when I started off, I was inspired by the cut and fits of Azzendine Alaia and also the architectural cuts of Issey Miyake. Closer home, I really appreciate the work of Shah Abdurazi. And I also like the creations coming out of the house of Versace and Alexander McQueen. Which actor /actress do you love to style for? All the actors are my friends and more of a family after 26 years. It’s like your asking a mother to choose who her favorite child is. I love styling and designing for all of them.

It determines which colours of light the lenses absorb. The most common method for tinting involves immersing the lenses in a special material, so that the tint is absorbed into the plastic lens. One goal for tinting is to reduce the amount of blue light, which can create glare (known as blue haze). Here’s what different color tints will do –

- Purple and rose tints provide excellent contrast when the background is green of blue.

-

Green tints reduce glare and offer high contrast. They filter some blue light.

-

Amber and brown tints reduce glare and absorb high frequency colours. They do a good job absorbing blue light.

- Yellow and gold tints almost eliminate blue light. They make things look bright and clear, but they can distort colours. Yellow and gold tinted glasses are best in the snow. -

Gray tints reduce brightness, minimally distorting colour and protect against glare. They are good choice for driving.

SUNGLASSES ACCORDING TO YOUR FACE STRUCTURE

TULIP

FASHION

Oval Shape

An oval face is a lucky one for it looks great with different stylish sunglasses. Aviator or walnut-shaped frames or over-sized polarized shades match with the eyebrow contour. You should ensure that they are wider compared to the widest part of the face.

Triangle Shape

Since the forehead of people with trianglar face shape is narrow, they should select sunglasses which widen the top part of face and chins. Appealing and bright coloured cat-eyed or metal frames shift people’s attention from the wider portion of the face. However, do not use bold colors like green or red.

Square Shape

Anyone with square face shape should opt for sunglasses which reduce the angularity of the face. Cat eyed, round or oval frames are narrow styled and since they are heavy on top, the face appears long.

Oblong Shape

An oblong face structure demands sunglasses which make it appear short and balanced. While round or square shaped frames serve this purpose, you should not pick rectangular ones if you have this face structure.

SUGGESTIONS •

Always put your sunglasses in a hardcover case to protect them when traveling out and about; otherwise you might sit on them and mangle them.

Make sure they fit well or they will fall off your face. Be aware of your surroundings if you are playing sports, they might fly off accidentally.

Make sure they look and feel good on your face. You don’t want sunglasses that are too small/big or just look good and don’t feel good.

When shopping for sunglasses, look for labels that say the lenses block out 99% to 100% of UV radiation. Make sure they block out both UVA and UVB rays.

Our eyes need sun protection all year long, so do not wait for summer to shop for sunglasses. During the fall and winter, you may see the sun less often, but that doesn’t mean its effects aren’t felt by our eyes. Sea foam, beach sand and snow - they all reflect damaging UV light into our eyes.

Round Shape

A round shaped face looks thinner and longer with angular, rectangular or narrow frames. You can complement them with dark colours like black or brown. Avoid the frames which have decorations at their edges.

REALITY SHOWS

TULIP

CAMPUS BUZZ

Imagine Andrew Symonds dusting mats or Pamela Anderson dancing on Dhak Dhak. They are few instances which might have seemed next to impossible few years back. Welcome to the era of reality television where fiction meets reality. Reality shows as we know today are the favorites. On one hand, they generate good revenues for Television Industry and on the other hand; they create a very good platform for thousands of Indian youngsters who want to achieve great things in their field of interests. These shows capture ordinary people or celebrities in real life situations. They broke the monotony to create interesting scripts and out of box ideas which have made them stand out from the regular run-of-themill shows. Roshni Ahuja a student of BMS from St. Francis College When asked on her views on reality shows said – ‘Different people have different views on reality shows. According to me, they are not fake and are absolutely real, depicting what a person goes through. And I also believe there should be an increment in such shows, as all these shows interest the general public and also increase the TRPs of the channel. So the crew should make sure the show is practical and real enough for the audience to believe.’ Most people will vouch for MTV Roadies to officially be the first reality show that was telecast on Indian Television. As a matter of fact, it is the longest running reality show in Indian Television. And even 10 years later, it is just gaining its popularity every year. Where as Indian Idol which caters to masses and classes alike has the entire nation glued onto television screens when they see participants from general household taking center stage.

the show. They are put through various tasks and situations where their friends become enemies which make it more interesting.’ Some of these reality shows, game shows, celebrity shows, documentaries and make over shows are just a plain copies of each other. However different their concept is they interestingly run on the same path. Despite this, they give the audience the thrill and excitement of live un-edited action. Reality television allows the audience to be a part of the show. For example Big Boss or Dance India Dance allows the audience to choose the winners through a voting system. Reality shows today are a part of every entertainment channel. Love it or hate it but you just can’t ignore it.

When asked Karan Bahirwani a student from St. Mary’s on his view he said – ‘I love watching reality shows. I do not believe that it’s completely real but it’s not completely fake either. Shows like Roadies, Survivor, Just Dance and Comedy Circus have given opportunities for people to exhibit their talent and also have opened ways for career. It’s also more entertaining than the daily Saas-Bahu sagas.’ When asked which his favorite show is, he adds in – ‘My favorite show is Roadies, the show has contestants from all over India. occurring in between. On the other hand, wife’s role is significant too. She can be a tremendous help to her husband. Her contribution, wisdom, insight and understanding cannot be estimated. The three roles of a wife are to be her husband’s companion, supporter and admirer. Amit - Childhood was the most beautiful of all life seasons. What we remember from childhood, we remember forever - permanent guests, birthday parties, attachment of family members, family holidays and fun time with friends. I was a mischievous child! I was pampered by my grandparents. I grew up with my grandparents, parents and sister. My sister and I were very dear to my grandparents. She and I had wonderful childhood memories with them. I loved Cricket and had spent a lot of time with my friends, playing different sports. I enjoyed video games and movies. I was fascinated with super heroes. I completed my college and joined my Dad and grandfather into family textile business. I completed 12 years in the sari industry and felt that life had much more

dressed and I enjoy helping others being well dressed as well. I started my career only after I got married to Amit. I looked into short term designing courses, while I was a spinster. After I was married, I started with a small exhibition at home. Friends and family love my collection and always came back to me for more stuff. It was then that my mom, sisterin-law and my sister made me realized that I should look into this on a larger scale. I got geared up and started designing stuff and catering to different ranges. I slowly entered into exhibitions which gave me a very big platform in my life. I realized how much people loved and appreciated my collection and this brought me to great heights. My in-laws and friends have been a great support to me. Amit too had a lot of knowledge about my field and was always there to support and guide me. Today, I am proud of him as he has put in all his efforts and has started a studio boutique which caters to all women needs from a collection of westerns, tunics, Indian outfits and customized designing. I always had passion for fashion. ‘The best thing about my profession is, I can have my cake and eat it too. I get a chance to wear clothes from my latest trendy collection, as well as build a career out of it’ – Mehak.

‘Some dream and never do. Others do and never dream. But then, there are those very few who dream and do what they dream’ – Amit and Mehak. in store for me. With the support of my family and Mehak, I decided to start something of my own. And here I am with a new bang - Mehak’s Designer Studio. Since Mehak was all ready into this field and was operating from home, I knew quite a lot about this line and was confident that it’s not going to be difficult to make a start. I first met Mehak in Chennai at a wedding. It was a casual one! I was to leave to Bangalore after the wedding and I was told by my family that I had to officially see a girl. I was all zapped as I wasn’t prepared. We had an official meeting - her family and friends. Mehak was the first girl I officially met. I should say, I was getting interrogated by her family (laughs). I then left to Bangalore and I was ready to see few more alliances there. Mehak too was in Bangalore with her family again and our folks arranged a second meeting. We got to know each other better. We got back to our routine lives and after a gap of two months, our families decided to officially say a yes! Soon we were engaged and now married for 12 and half years. Mehak is fun loving and she is independent. She is friendly and very social. She’s an amazing cook and an expert in making cakes and desserts. She is a caring person. She’s more like a friend. She lets me be who I am. Didn’t have to adjust much as we share common thoughts and gave each other space weneed. We love going for long drives and to chill out with friends.

‘Life is full of hurdles. One has to overcome many difficulties which arise off and on. One would like a smooth life, but that is not how it is. In reality, one has to deal with all kinds of problems - be it financial or social. In case, one is able to find one’s way through this prickly pathway of life, then one will be a sure winner. Overcoming hurdles is not all that easy. One has to be sure of oneself and work towards a set goal. The determination to be a winner is necessary’ – Amit.

HOLIDAY MEMORIES Amit - It was a road trip from Banaglore to Coorg. It was just the two of us. It’s an amazing place to relax and get de-stressed from our daily routines. We were there for three nights and made the best use by going to spas and enjoyed the candle light dinner at the poolside. The place was beautiful. We had fun while fishing at the riverside and canoeing. Sun set was amazing. Apt place for a good road trip!

MY PROFESSION – MY PASSION Mehak - Being well dressed has always been a priority and has come easily to me. Even as a child, I used to a take delight in dressing up and looking my best. Looking best is important as an actual right for every woman. This helps me to give my best to my profession. I love to be well

‘I love my Mom and Dad a lot. I am their sweetheart! I am blessed with the most caring parents. I love the clothes my Mom makes for others and also for me. She is my style-icon and my Dad is my rock star’ – Ananya. APRIL, 2012 63

MAGNIFICENT MOTORS

MCLAREN MP 4-12 C McLaren MP4-12C is a sports car designed and manufactured by McLaren Automotive. It is the first production car wholly designed and built by McLaren since the McLaren F1. The MP4-12C features a carbon fibre composite chassis, and is powered by a mid-mounted McLaren M838T 3.8-litre V8, twin-turbo engine developing approximately 592 bhp (441 kW; 600 PS) and around 443 lb•ft (601 N•m) of torque. The car makes use of Formula 1-sourced technologies such as brake steer, where the inside rear wheel is braked during fast cornering to reduce under steer. Power is transmitted to the wheels through a 7-speed Seamless Shift dual-clutch gearbox. The car is powered by the M838T 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, designed and developed by McLaren in partnership with Ricardo. The design of the engine was based on the Nissan VRH35 racing engine used in Le Mans in 1998. However, other than the 93 mm bore, little of that engine remains in the M838T. It produces 592 bhp (441 kW; 600 PS) and 443 lb•ft (601 N•m) of torque. It has a red line of 8,500 rpm, with 80% of torque available at just 2,000 rpm. When first announced, McLaren claimed that it would have a higher horsepower to carbon dioxide emission ratio than any internal-combustion engine available at the time. SPECIFICATIONS : 105.1 inches wheelbase, TBD ground clearance, weight distribution and drag coefficient, 529 hp @ 7000 rpm power, 443 lb-ft @ 3000-70000 rpm torque.

SUZUKI INTRUDER M800

The Suzuki Intruder M800 is powered by a 800cc engine. The bike adopts the same engine system as that of its elder sibling. The M800 has a fuel injected, liquid cooled V-Twin engine that runs on a 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC layout. The M800 has a cylinder inclined by 45 degrees, which is 9 degrees lesser than Suzuki Intruder M1800. The 800 cc version of the Intruder will be easier to handle as it weighs 70 kgs. lesser than the 180cc version. This is one of the smoothest motorcycle engines. One can barely feel it, be it noisy or vibrations, as the 805cc liquid cooled V-twin unit turns over lazily. Its low slung cruiser stance, copious amounts of chrome and relatively massive proportions (compared to most of the other bikes at the traffic signal) does get you the attention you would crave if indeed you are riding such a machine. The M800 also makes you feel nice as you seat yourself on that wide, well-cushioned seat and grip those stretched out yet easy-to-reach handlebars. Switchgear too is ergonomically designed so everything is at the tip of one’s fingers. The switchgears are nice to operate. A hazard warning lamp is of course a big plus though is the fact that the hazards don’t work with the engine off. So if you want to park the bikes with the hazards on, then you have to keep the engine running. As it is expected from a cruiser, straight line stability is outstanding, as is the bike’s road holding properties. SPECIFICATIONS : Engine capacity – 805 cc, front brakes – 2 piston capilar, 300 mm single-disc brake, rear brakes – 180 mm drum brake, 9.4:1 compression ratio, 62 Nm @ 4000 rpm maximum torque, 53 Bhp @ 6000 rpm maximum power. 66 APRIL, 2012

HYOSUNG GV 250 AQUILA The GV250 will make even the long way home feel short…

The joint venture between Korean bikemaker Hyosung in accordance with Garware Motors has begun to find it’s sure-footing in the Indian premium twowheeler space with the firm recording consistent sales every month despite undersized yet stiff competition coming its way in the 600cc segment. With already two significant products in its kitty, the Garware Motors-Hyosung coalition will soon launch its 250cc models in India in 2012 as part of the company’s top-down strategy. Apart from the racy GT250R and the naked GT250N, the firm has confirmed that they will also bring in their cruiser motorcycle – the GV250 at a competitive pricing. A full-size, 250cc cruiser with low handle bar built around classic styling and V-twin DOHC 8 valve engine combine to deliver a smooth and confident ride, normally only found in larger displacement motorcycles. Featuring electronic fuel injection, increased intake and exhaust efficiency and improved riding position, you will not find a more comfortable or better performing small cruiser. It breaks through the hardest tasks with ease. An entry level cruiser with a real V-Twin engine and true custom cruiser styling! The low seat height and easy riding makes the GV250 an ideal first motorcycle. Recent open road tests by a learner rider returned 33km per litre! The fuel injected GV250 is capable, nimble and right at home on the open road. The bike has disk brake of strong brake force that employs caliper, wide and comfortable seat, low seat height 700mm, aluminum casting wheel and extra-wide tubeless tire and high-capacity (14 l) fuel tank of two-tone color with beautifully curved lines. SPECIFICATIONS : Wheelbase – 1500.00 mm, displacement – 249 cc, engine – 249 cc, maximum power – 28.5 Bhp @ 1000 rpm, LxWxH – 2270.00 mm x 800.00 mm x 1090.0 mm, power – 25.00 HP (18.2 KW) @ 10000 RPM, torque – 22.04 Nm (2.2 kgf-m or 16.3 ft.lbs) @ 7500 RPM, compression – 10.3:1, power/weigfht ratio – 0.1421 HP/Kg, 14 lts. fuel capacity, ground clearance – 150 mm (5.9 inches).

VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG

The car has an integrated LCD multifunction display, a fresh console design, carpeted door-bins and soft-touch plastics give the Touareg a premium feel, even if the piano-black centre console trim is prone to scratching. The front seats are commodious, although only manually-adjustable and trimmed in lower-grade leather in the base model 150TDI. They’re not heavily bolstered either, which reduces the amount of lateral support available. On the plus side, there’s plentiful legroom and headroom in both front and rear and the rear seatbacks are reclinable. The rear bench is wide enough to seat three adults, but the centre position seat is too firm for long journeys. Standard equipment includes a trip-computer, Bluetooth phone integration, USB/AUX audio inputs, a six-disc in-dash CD stacker, cruise control, dusk-sensing headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, autodimming mirrors, heated front seats, foglamps and 17-inch alloys. The standard eight-speed automatic is also a technologically impressive piece of equipment, but performance is blunted a little by the Touareg’s 2154kg empty weight. With a 0-100km/h sprint time of 9.0 seconds, it’s brisk enough (and in keeping with the Touareg’s SUV design-intent) but shaded by most modern wagons. The brake pedal responds quickly and the big all-disc brake package seems resistant to fade. If you plan on towing a heavy load with your Touareg, these stoppers should have no trouble dealing with it. The Touareg is fitted with nine airbags in total - dual front, front side, rear side, full-length curtain and driver’s knee. The hydraulic power steering is light and lacks a little feedback, but it does make parking very easy. VW says the Touareg’s turning circle is 11.9 metres, but it actually feels tighter thanks to a variable-ratio steering rack. SPECIFICATIONS 199.00 mm ground clearance, 2312.00 kgs. Kerb weight, 510 Nm @ 1750 rpm maximum torque, 225 Bhp @ 4000 rpm maximum power, 2967 cc, V6 displacement.
