The best thing about Tulip magazine is that it is versatile. I loved the ‘India Takes The Fashion Industry By Storm’ article. Ganesh Nallari’s quote added up to the article’s charisma. Shieba Rekhi Student As an event manager and coordinator, I need to be updated about the parties, events and happenings. With Tulip, I am ever updated. Tulip is a magazine par excellence. With the price and contact information it gets easy for us to choose. The properties, interiors section and the art sections were very informative and useful. - Rahul Dasan Aviation Professional Tulip is a refreshing treat. It always has fresh content and loads of information. I was awestruck at the 48 Hour Film Project article in the previous issue. It is commendable how people made films with so many limitations. I also liked the mango and the pets article. - Vaishnavi Prabhatha Student

MAKING A BIGGER MARK

‘Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.’ - Abraham Lincoln The thing always happens that you really believe in and the belief in a thing makes it happen. I remember the day when I held the first copy of Tulip in my hand - the feeling was amazing. Now we have marked two years milestone and I am so happy, I have seen Tulip growing in front of me, I congratulate each and every person who is associated with Tulip. It’s the hard work of Tulip Team which has paid off today. I am very grateful to the readers who have appreciated the magazine. You have to run behind success, success doesn’t come to you. When you have a vision to do something you should have the courage of hurdles to pass through subsequently anything can be achieved. In addition, I would like to extend my gratitude to our advertisers for the support. Tulip has marked its place now in the city. Everyone is aware of the magazine. I receive lot of calls from various people complimenting about the articles, designs and coverage in magazine. I feel so overwhelmed! Three things which we focus primarily in Tulip office is quality of work, relevant content and reader’s feedback. We promise to keep productive outcome in the future as well.

Ansar Ahmed Bilgrami CEO

A DREAM NOW BIGGER

‘Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.’ - David Frost The past two years journey from the very first issue has been tremendously well. In such a short span, Tulip has made its name in the market and evolved as a brand. Tulip is the most important thing that has happened to me over the years. My life revolves around it. I always wanted to be a successful business woman and this was the best chance I could get to make my dream come true. Tulip is now, more of a part of Hyderabad than just a magazine. It reflects the image of the city and brings you closer to it.I’ve learnt a lot of things. It was a process in which a lot of learning was involved. In the beginning I knew nothing about the nuances of a magazine it was more like fun but now I’ve as a person, I have grown to be better. I have become more responsible and organized now. One important lesson I learnt is that if you really want to do something in life with all your heart it is bound to happen. I’ve got a lot of support from my family, friends and staff. My staff has itself been like another family, working with them is fun and we learn a lot from each other. Life has also been pretty good to me. Two people without whom I can never imagine Tulip are my husband Esam and my father in law Ansar Ahmed Bilgrami. They have been very supportive in all my decisions. My father in law means half of this world to me. He has been a part of every decision we had to make. I am blessed to have a wonderful family. I express my whole hearted gratitude and thank all my readers and advertisers for their undying faith and support. We hope to make our magazine bigger and better each year. It has been a beautiful journey so far. Thanks a million.

- Aaliyah Ahmed Bilgrami Director – Sales & Marketing

LADY GAGA

JOHN TRAVOLTA

BANNED IN INDONESIA

ACCUSED FOR ASSAULTING

H O L L Y W O O D

One of the two male masseurs who accused actor John Travolta of sexual assault, dropped his $2 million lawsuit, but the lawyer for the second man said he was going ahead with that case and was

confident of success. The unidentified man, referred to as John Doe No. 1, who claimed that the Hollywood star groped him during a massage session in Beverly Hills, filed a notice dismissing his lawsuit with federal court in Los Angeles. Travolta’s lawyer Marty Singer has termed the claims to be absurd and ridiculous. The actor was vindicated by the dismissal of the first complaint. The first masseur was reported last week to have said he got the wrong date of the alleged incident after photos and restaurant receipts surfaced putting the Saturday Night Fever actor in New York on the same day. Okorocha said he still will be going ahead with the lawsuit against Travolta, representing a second unidentified man, John Doe No. 2, who claimed that Travolta rubbed his leg, touched him indecently and tried to molest him at a private appointment at an Atlanta hotel earlier this year. He found international claim with the movies Saturday Night Fever and Grease in the 1970s, before going on to grittier roles in Pulp Fiction.

Lady Gaga, who was scheduled to perform in Jakarta, has just been banned by the nation following protests from hard-line Islamic critics. The concert drew vehement opposition from many in the world’s most populous Muslim nation, due to her controversial persona and racy getups. A spokesman for the Indonesian national police has confirmed that the singer has been denied a permit for her show, resulting in the show being cancelled. It would have been the biggest stop on her Asian tour, having been set to take place at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta. The Islamic Defenders Front trashed the global pop superstar for her satanic lyrics that threaten to destroy the children’s sense of morality. Other protesters, equally enraged, even vowed to physically block the singer from setting foot on Indonesian soil if the show wasn’t cancelled. Local law enforcement reportedly requested that the permit be denied after fearing that officers wouldn’t able to contain a massive on-site protest. Earlier this spring, Gaga’s tour drew protests from South Korean Christian groups decrying that her pornographic performances promoted homosexuality.

CHARLINDA

BREAK-UP AFTER THERAPY Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife, 52-year-old Linda Hogan, has called off her engagement with her 23-year-old boyfriend Charley Hill. Charley and I decided that we should each travel through life in different directions’ Linda said. Linda divorced Hulk one year prior to agreeing to marry Hill and later accused the former WWE grappler of abuse. Insiders report Charley recently moved out of Linda’s home in Florida after four years of dating. The couple reportedly had a serious talk about their relationship and both admitted they didn’t see themselves marrying one another. Charley and Linda had dated for four years and have been engaged for two years. There was a lot of therapy involved and the couple realized they needed to do their own thing. The realization came this weekend. But it was a mutual decision and a whole new chapter for both of them. Hogan was 48 and Hill only 19 when they first met in 2008 after her son Nick’s car accident. Hill was a high school acquaintance of Hulk and Linda’s daughter, Brooke Hogan. Charley and Linda recently appeared on VH1’s reality show, Couple’s Therapy where celebrity couples try to salvage their relationships. We guess that didn’t work! 18 JUNE, 2012

AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN

CANNES FOR A CAUSE

B O L L Y W O O D

Actress Aishwarya Rai is regular on the Cannes Red Carpet. But her visit to the 65th edition of the prestigious film festival was for a cause. The former beauty queen helped raise funds for fight against AIDS at an auction there. The actress participated in Cannes 2012 and attended L’Oreal Paris - AMFAR (The American Foundation for AIDS Research) dinner that helped raise funds for the fight against AIDS. She is also busy doting upon her daughter. The four-month-old daughter, said to have been named Aaradhya, is keeping Aishwarya occupied and work has taken a backseat for the actress. The former beauty queen has visibly put on post-pregnancy weight and would have to shed it off before she gets back to the cameras. Apart from Aishwarya, other key celebrities who attended the gala dinner are - Gwen Stefani, Milla Jovovich, Aimee Mullins, Liya Kebede, Doutzen Kroes, Natasha Poly, Julianna Margulies and Diane Keaton. The list also includes Alec Baldwin, Kenneth Cole, Milutin Gatsby, Michel Hazanavicius and Berenice Bejo, Ryan Kavanaugh, Karl Lagerfeld, Hugh Laurie, Carine Roitfeld and Harvey Weinstein. Aishwarya remained the center of attention as always and the awards ceremony was also carried out well.

JAYA – REKHA

ANOTHER CONFRONTATION Actress Rekha is now a member of parliament. She took her oath at the parliament house which soon resembled a film shoot as media persons were competing with each other to capture the actor-turnedMP as well as the parliamentarians made a beeline for a glimpse of the Bollywood icon as she entered and also when she left. Rekha was accompanied by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla.

There was a frenzy which made it difficult for the actress to even get out of the car. Then she took the oath in front of all the members and elders of the house, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who all welcomed her to the House by thumping the desk. Rekha was looking forward to attend Parliament. It was a new experience for her. Anyone from a film background would be excited to attend Parliament and the actor was always excited to leave her mark behind. All previous celebrities like Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Dilip Kumar and Jaya Bachchan have all done credible work and we hope Rekha makes it worthwhile here as well. Bollywood gossip world is looking forward to at least some smoke from the Jaya-Rekha rivalry. 20 JUNE, 2012

MALAIKA

SIZZLING TOLLYWOOD Actress Malaika Arora Khan is extremely happy with the success of her new song Kevvu Keka for the movie Gabbar Singh, which is a remake of blockbuster Bollywood film Dabangg. In an interview, the item dancer couldn’t stop praising powerstar Pawan Kalyan, producer Bandla Ganesh Babu and director Harish Shankar. She was glad that she was a part of such a wonderful project. The Munni Badnam Hui star was awestruck at the response the film got at the box office. The film being a huge hit only brightens the prospects for Malaika in Tollywood. Actor Pawan Kalyan was seen playing the role of a cop, first made famous by Salman Khan. Shruti Hassan as the female lead takes over as village belle from Sonakshi Sinha and the item queen Malaika Arora Khan reprises her Munni number in the movie. The music is rocking the charts and so is the film. We wish Malaika all the very best for her upcoming projects and we hope to see more of her in Telugu cinema as well. The Dabangg charisma did work out both for the diva and the actor.

CASEY STONER

RETIREMENT DECISION

S P O R T S

Reigning world champion Casey Stoner has stunned the MotoGP paddock by announcing that he will retire at the end of the 2012 season. The Australian, 26, had denied rumours that he was to quit the sport at the previous round of the championship in Portugal, but he revealed his intention to call time on his career at a press conference ahead of the recent French Grand Prix. Stoner told a press conference – ‘After a long time thinking, a lot of time talking with my family and my wife, this has been coming for a couple of years now, but at the end of this 2012 season I will be not racing in the 2013 Championship. I will be finishing my career at the end of this season in MotoGP and go forward in different things in my life. After so many years of doing this sport which I love and which myself and my family made so many sacrifices for, after so many years of trying to get to where we have gotten to at this point, this sport has changed a lot and it has changed to the point where I am not enjoying it.’ Let’s hope he has a fantastic rest of the year ahead!

LUKE POMMERSBACH

ARRESTED FOR MOLESTING

Delhi Police arrested Royal Challengers Bangalore player, Luke Pomersbach for allegedly misbehaving with a woman and severely attacking her fiancee. ‘27-year-old Australian’ player allegedly misbehaved with the woman, a US citizen of Indian origin, at the Maurya Sheraton Hotel in the national capital and has been arrested, police said. A case has been registered against him under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including section 354 of IPC (outraging modesty of woman), 323 (hurt), 454 (lurking house trespass) and 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment). The woman said the player invited himself for some drinks with the couple and some common friends from Mumbai in their room. She left the men alone and went to her bedroom for catching some sleep but Luke followed her and misbehaved with her. When her fiancee intervened, Luke allegedly beat him up, she said. The woman’s fiancee has been admitted to a hospital. The woman claimed that pressure is being mounted on her to withdraw the case but she will not do so. Pomersbach’s conduct prompted RCB owner Vijay Mallya to suspend the batsman, who has not played a single IPL match so far this season, till the time he is cleared of the charges.

MESSI MAKES ME BETTER

C RONALDO

Cristiano Ronaldo gets tired of the comparisons between him and Lionel Messi, but believes the pair push each other to keep improving. Since Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid in 2009, his goals battle with Barcelona forward Messi has captured the imagination in La Liga. In the recently-completed season Ronaldo hit a remarkable 46 goals in 38 appearances, but was bested as Messi struck a scarcely believable 50 goals in 37 matches. The Portuguese believes it is futile to debate which player is better, but is inspired by his opposite number’s high standards. Sometimes it makes me tired for him too, because they compare us together all the time, he said. You cannot compare a Ferrari with a Porsche because it’s a different engine. You cannot compare them. He does the best things for Barcelona, I do the best things for Madrid, so the number (of goals) everyone says it’s incredible. For him and for me because we beat our own records, so it’s amazing. I think we push each other sometimes in the competition, this is why the competition is so high. This is why Madrid and Barcelona are the best teams in the world because everyone pushes each other. 24 JUNE, 2012

A Day From Brinda Prasad ’s Diary..

TULIP

LIFESTYLE The first thing I do in the morning is to pray! I apply a pinch of sacred vibhooti in my mouth and I start my day. Along with tea, I read Sai Baba Satcharita. It’s a compilation of different incidents when Sai Saba was alive, which tells us everything about him and the experiences devotees have witnessed. It is like a Bhagvad Gita for every Sai Baba believer. I read a few pages everyday and I get on to the other things.

At 9:00, I do my morning exercises for 20 minutes, which includes elliptical training. I also cook for my husband on some days depending on what he likes. I am very simple with food and I prefer it homemade. But if I go out, I enjoy my all time favourite – mutton biryani.

I am a homemaker, irrespective of my work schedules. I have my house to take care of. Although I have a maid who cooks for us, I do guide her during special occasions. I pay my bills. I make my morning calls to my parents! I have to talk to my whole family, about how things are and how my day is going to be. We connect to each other every day, no matter where we are in the world. My breakfast is always with my husband and I make sure I never miss that!

When it comes to weddings, it is something which happens once in a lifetime. That’s their big day and when you see the happiness of the people around and when they appreciate you for your good work and when in return you get complements, it’s a different satisfaction altogether. It’s not about money all the time, but getting the right things done at the right time, which matters a lot!

OVERCOMING PROFESSIONAL HURDLES My husband is a pillar of strength and my mentor. Luckily, I am married to my best friend. I can be rest assured when he is around me. I can overcome any problem when he is around me. When there is a crisis, I don’t have to worry because, I know he is there to sort it out. The profession that we are in, we are prone to competition. But as long as it’s healthy, there is nothing to worry about! I love hanging out with friends – Sandhya, Maggie, Shruthi, Sharmila and Nikki. They are my stress-busters! 38 JUNE, 2012

By noon, I get ready and I am off to work. I am meticulously punctual and I hate people who do not value time. I am a cleanliness freak and I have an obsessive compulsive disorder with cleaning - be it my house or work place. I get paranoid when things are messy around me. When there is lesser clutter around you, there is lesser clutter in your life. No matter how busy I am, I try to eat on time and I don’t like to stretch too much on my hunger. Creativity is like a field of science and technology, which needs to get upgraded constantly. Fashion changes and so are the needs of the people. Based on that, you need to update yourself with the latest trends. People here want something exclusive and different from what others have. In our field, working on the right package to cater the clients’ requirement within their set budget, is the biggest challenge. Irrespective of what their budget is, we respect every client and they are important to us. There is no big or small client. All are equal! So trying to do that, the team believes and works towards that single challenge to satisfy our clients. But the best thing about my profession is that I get to meet different kinds of people and it’s always new. And I get to travel as well!

My most memorable holiday trip is when Vishnu & I went to Dubai in 2008 February. It was such an unplanned trip, yet so much fun. We enjoyed the desert safari and shopped till we dropped. We also did a lot of fun stuff. We didn’t know how much we shopped till we actually started packing. For me, a perfect vacation would be chilling with family, good food and some good shopping.

TERI MERI KAHANI ISHAQZAADE Ishaqzaade is a rustic love story between Parma (Arjun Kapoor) and Zoya (Parineeti), two youngsters from opposite clans of the political scene in Almor, a small town in central India. Their journey starts off with great friction, amid campaigning for the local MLA election. With campaign, romance and betrayal, the journey is not a bed of roses by any means. This is one of those rare rustic love stories to come out of Bollywood, amid a slew of urban movies coming out every other week. Parineeti Chopra is the lifeline of the movie. She is natural and emotions just come so easily to her, be it mischief or rage or romance. She is a real talent to watch out for! The hunky Arjun Kapoor makes a very earnest debut. The kind of effort that a city lad like him must have put to get into the skin of such a rural character, is admirable. The chemistry between the lead players is the main reason why this movie leaves a mark on you.

Director - Kunal Kohli Cast - Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Can we truly love one person throughout our life and hope that fate makes us meet with the same person in every life? This story takes us through a journey of eternal love between a couple who have vowed to love each other not only in this life, but in every life to follow. Their love is so strong that even destiny wants to bring them together. The story starts in 1960 Bombay with Govind and Ruksar, then moves ahead to present times, 2012 England with Radha and Krish and then goes back in time to Punjab, 1910 with Aradhana and Javed.

DANGEROUS ISHHQ Sanjana (Karisma Kapoor) is a super model who leaves her career behind for the love of her life Rohan (Rajneish Duggal). However, fate works against them and Rohan gets kidnapped. Enters hot-shot cop ACP Bhargav Singh (Jimmy Shergill) who denies the kidnapper a ransom of 50 crores, as he gets the divine intervention that even money wouldn’t get Rohan back. It is in this extreme trauma that Sanjana discovers something extraordinary. She sees visions of them together sometime in the past, in different eras. How her past life actually helps her find Rohan, is what follows through the rest of the plot. Ten minutes into the film and you start cursing your bad karmas of the past which lead you to watch this heap of crap. Right from the gun-totting, mask wearing hoodlums who barge into a billionaire’s house effortlessly out of nowhere, to sudden flashbacks within flashbacks that Sanjana keeps going through; almost everything in the film is bizarre.

Director - Timur Bekmambetov CAST - Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper When Lincoln is eleven years old, he learns from his father that vampires are real. Thomas explains to his son that a vampire killed Abraham’s grandfather. Young Abraham is also shocked to learn that his beloved mother succumbed not to sickness, but rather being given a fool’s dose of vampire blood, the result of Thomas’ failure to repay a debt. Lincoln vows to kill as many vampires as he can. A year later he lures the vampire responsible for his mother’s death to farm and manages to kill it with a homemade stake. At the age of sixteen, Lincoln gets nearly killed. He is saved by vampire Henry Sturges. Henry nurses Lincoln back to health and explains some of the nature of vampires, emphasizing that some vampires are good and others are evil.

MADAGASCAR III Director - Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath Cast - Ben Stiller and Chris Rock Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria set out to return to New York after escaping to Africa. Dependent on the mechanical know-how of the notorious chimpanzees and penguins, their plan inevitably goes awry and they find themselves stranded in Monte Carlo, where they try to escape Europe from animal control led by Captain Chantel DuBois by joining up with a traveling circus by chance. Led by the venerable Siberian tiger Vitaly, the animal-centered circus has seen better days. During the course of a tour through a series of European cities that ends in a fabulous big top in the heart of London, Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria help Vitaly, Gia and Stefano; rediscover their passion for show business and reinvent circus performance. PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION

SPECIAL

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? Quotes like - love is in the air and stolen kisses are always sweetest do not apply to the Indian context. It is looked down upon as if it is something cheap and illegal. India is a highly populated nation. Isn’t it the result of love making? Whoa! Let’s not go that deep! It is nice and cuddly in private. You can do anything you want, romance as much as you can and contribute with your best efforts to increase the population of the country. But why is the same romance done in a lot lower proportion in public, unacceptable? Leave alone streets or roads - it is unacceptable anywhere. Parks, malls, food joints, pubs and parties are venues for social gathering and interaction. How many places can you control? If love is an acceptable act, why isn’t its expression? Of course we are not talking about anything obscene. Indian culture has been redefined. It is now an amalgamation of western culture and Indian practices. The society has changed! If the world is broad-minded, what is the point in having frog-in-the-well attitude? Love is not a crime. India has mythological stories and tales replicating the greatness of love and romance. Then why is it such hyped about? People have personal choices which should be respected.

If people are seen indulging in public display of affection, the consequences are severe and brutal. They are interrogated, humiliated and beaten up by the cops. Their parents are called and a scene is created hurting the morale and bringing ill fame. Under section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, Public Display of Affection (PDA) is a criminal offence with a punishment of imprisonment up to 3 months or a fine or both. This law has been blatantly misused by the police and the lower courts, to harass couples apparently engaging in PDA. The act clearly mentions that if people cause disharmony by exhibiting their affection in an indigestible way, they are victimized; but this is not being the case. They are questioned even if they sit together or travel by bike together. Right to freedom is always active, if you are an Indian citizen unless and until it is misused for unjust means. If we consider the situation in general; it is completely acceptable to hold hands, hug with affection and give slight pecks in public. When we can accept such gestures in films and TV, then why not in real life? There is a need to clarify and define what is obscene and what is not. Times are changing and the youth definitely accepts PDA as a natural part of their life, be it with friends or a love interest. The rest- only time will tell. ‘We don’t believe in PDA in India. We do not approve of it not only in public but also in homes. Parents do not indulge in any physical expression in front of their children. We may belong to the modern era but our traditions and upbringing have such a strong hold on our minds that it is difficult to shred off. May be if we were not in such a closed society it would have been different. Cops are abusing their power over people. They threaten them so that they can gain profit out of it. Love is a beautiful feeling and you need to respect it. It is uncomfortable to view PDA but it is certainly not criminal and there should be no legal binds on it. You should not cross the boundaries of decency though! We cannot criminalize such innocuous things. We are not in Victorian times to allow such outdated laws on our law books.’ - Dr. Akhileshwari Ramagoud, Lecturer at Loyola Degree College

THE BEAUTY OF KBR PARK

WELLBEING

Hyderabad is a metropolitan. It is carving its niche to be in the competition for global recognition. Surprising is the fact that, within this jungle of noise, buildings and modernization; there lies a jungle that is the complete antithesis of the megacity - one that is beaming with life, that is more primal and uncivilized and yet, exotically beautiful. This place is called the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park or commonly abbreviated as KBR National Park and no tourist of Hyderabad should ever leave the city without checking the park out. It is a rather unique park in its own way. It was formally a 24acre palace complex but the park has an approximate area of 1.425 Sq Kms. It was built in 1960 but was declared as a national park in 1998, by the Government of A.P. It was established in 1994 in order to protect the biodiversity and richness of the area. It was formerly a part of the Nizam’s Chirhan Palace but now it has its own place and name. Apart from the picturesque view, it also includes historical monuments and royal splendor. The park provides an excellent lung space and environment from the busy city life and rising pollution levels.

The park is a supporting verdant forest with diverse flora and fauna - flora typically representing southern tropical deciduous forests and the last vestigial representative of the indigenous number of over 600 species of plant life including of trees, shrubs, climbers, herbs, grasses, besides several peridophytes, bryophytes and xerophytes and comprising 140 species of birds, 20 species of reptiles, 30 species of butterflies, 20 species of mammals and numerous invertebrates. It serves as an urban refuge and a home for jungle cats, palm civets, wild boars, hares, mongooses, monitor lizards, pythons, cobras and other snakes. No large mammals are present in the national park. In addition to this, there is also an increase in the population of peacocks with the number being more than 350, it is a visual treat to watch the national bird and swell our hearts with pride. There are few water bodies present in the park providing the needed moisture for the plants and quenching the thirst of birds and small animals. The park is frequented in the evenings and weekends by young and old alike. It is mostly known to be a jogger’s park where people take out time from their busy lifestyles to keep a check on their fitness and health every morning and evening. Laughter clubs, yoga, aerobics, pranayama and meditation can also take ample participation in these serene premises. The environment remains pleasant with the support of natural treasures and motivates people to visit the park on daily basis. It is considered as a protected groove of our state. It also has a refreshment area where you can buy coffee, water and other food products. As you walk by, you can hear sounds of exotic birds. You might even catch a glimpse of a peacock or two. The dense trees and foliage inside the park will most times cause a drop of temperature once one enters the park premises. It is a wonderful feeling of freshness and coolness that cannot be found in the humid and sweaty environment of the city. Most of all, good infrastructure benches backed by an able group of park custodians and maintenance crew, assures that the park is clean and well-maintained throughout, preserving its beauty and grandeur for generations to come.

Timings - 6 am to 8 am and 4 pm to 6 pm Getting There - It is located in Jubilee Hills.

They crave more for celebrities to be the highlight of their marriage procession. Hyderabad is a metropolitan city. They want their fast paced life to slow down to enjoy those special moments in life. They believe in standing out! They want to be talked about and noticed. The special attention they get, will give them immense pleasure and satisfaction. And Mr. Sabharwal hopes to deliver to them just that. He can see people knowing him through it. BACK TO COLLEGE!

Summer vacations are done! The smell of new books, the excitement of making new friends again and relishing the canteen delicacies - it’s time to head back to the campus! It’s time to wake up early, work on assignments and attend classes. But college isn’t so boring after all. Going to college is one of the most exciting phases in everyone’s life. The friends and memories made in the college years stay for a lifetime. It’s that time of the year again to catch the latest Friday releases, bunk classes, play pranks and always cherish the bright college days. When asked college students about how they feel to head back to college they were very excited and these were a few replies ‘I am very happy to get back to college after a long long vacation! I had missed my college, teachers, friends and all the naughty pranks we played in class. I get to be the senior this year! I am really waiting to get back to my college, my class and my friends whom I have been missing a lot all this while. A little friendly ragging with my juniors is definitely on my cards. This year, it’s our turn to welcome all of them’ says Shriya an inter second year student of Villa Marie College. 72 JUNE, 2012

‘I am actually happy that we are going to kick start a new year at college. It sure does pull the plug from holidays, late night cheer and long outing. But it also brings a fresh vibe onto college activities, friends and academics. I am pretty excited about this year in particular, as it would be the final year at college. I am sure I would make the best out of it. Can’t wait to get back to college!’ Ishna Rawlani St. Francis Degree College

Here are the days of college reopening, after a long break. We have to attend it, no matter what. Everything will fly past, just like the syllabus. I normally wait for holidays when I have college, but these holidays were boring and silent, because of the Summer.’ - Shikha Jain Villa Marie Degree college Ankit who is starting of as a fresher says - ‘I am going to start off with my engineering this year and I want to enjoy every bit of my college life. Engi-

neering was my childhood dream and I am all excited to shift to a hostel and enjoy my hostel life, as they say, - if one does engineering in hostels they have truly lived their lives. A little nervous though! But I hope to make a beautiful experience out of it.’ - Student College is one place where a person first learns individualism. We choose our friends and learn to make our decisions and we take part in various activities and competitions which give a sense of confidence and individuality. There is hardly any student who wouldn’t have enjoyed their campus life. hen two souls which are destined to be together find each other, their streams of light flow together and a single brighter light goes forth. In an up-close interview, Girish and Shruti Malpani talk about how and when they have met first and the beautiful resonance that exists between them… 74 JUNE, 2012

freedom but not at the cost of our lifestyles and family. I am very pragmatic in life and the same thing to my family. I take ideas from everyone. My role model has been my dad, for the sense of dedication towards his business, hard work and for having that go-getter attitude.

Shruti – My life as a kid was how it should be – a perfect childhood! It was a close-knit family, though my dad was not loaded with wealth, he never made us feel so! We had everything with care and affection. I am from Indore and I come from a background which has a strong value system – it was me, my younger brother, parents, grand-parents in a nuclear family. I didn’t have a memory of my dad leaving us and went to a trip for business. We celebrated all festivals together. I remember, I was pampered a lot at maternal side. I come from a business family, where I saw my dad struggle a lot. One very nice tradition is that, we used to have tea together. My communication flow with my parents is very strong. I discuss everything with my brother and parents and we are vocal about it.

Shruti - Since our trip to honeymoon in Kerala, every travel brought us new memories. The best is our recent trip to Maldives with my parents, brother and sister-in-law and we four of us. It was fun to see my kids swim next to me when we went snorkeling and enjoying nature together.

KINSHIP

Girish – I had a lively and a playful childhood. We used to live in a community where we had a bunch of friends and they made a change in my life, as we had a good time hanging out in the evenings, celebrate all the festivals together – so in that way we had a good bonding. My father was strict and had a lot of restrictions, so there was a lot of fear factor at home. But everything used to get evaporated once we were with our friends. One thing I miss about childhood is that we never travelled much, as my father was a busy person and he neither had time nor the passion to travel. Nonetheless, I am overcoming those by travelling a lot these days. Something which you miss during childhood days cannot be compensated, because it’s not only the fun and frolic of travel, but it widens the horizons and prospective of life is defined. They will never come back! But I had a balanced childhood with all the ingredients of life were covered, if not in totality, but in bits and pieces.

‘I must mention that Girish is an excellent and an admirable father. No matter how important or serious the meeting he is in, if there is a call from home, he will always answer it. He fulfills all his promises and makes it a point to spend quality time with us. He is like a child when he with our kids. I love watching him play with our kids.’ - Shruti about Girish being a family-man LOVE, SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT FROM IN-LAWS Girish – My in-laws are the perfect couple I know. My father-in-law in particular inspired me in many ways and also guided me at many crucial situations. What he had only thing to say was to work hard and go ahead in life and God is there to do the rest. He is a very fun-loving person. I do not know where he gets his energy from. Mother-in-law is very practical but an affectionate person. In fact, I have heard people calling her Maa Durga at times, because of the power she seems to emit of her persona.

‘Kids should be given all the facilities like – value for money, vision, training and focus, as a part of the up-bringing. They are free to make their decisions but we have a huge responsibility of giving them the right directions.’ - Girish BEST TRAVEL MEMORIES

OUR FIRST FORMAL MEET

Girish – It was well organized as it was an arranged marriage. We were introduced to each other by our parents and common relatives. When I first saw her, I felt that she was the right one for me and I went to say yes. We got engaged on November 13th, 1998 and got married on February 9th, 1999.

COURTSHIP

Shruti and Girish - We met thrice – twice for our cousins wedding and once for a family formal party. We had communicated with each other over phones. The best part of our relation is - we both are Aquarians and we believe in being friends first. We started knowing each other and then the love blossomed. The telephonic conversation helped me a lot in knowing each other better and also every family member. Girish – Among every couple, there is one who is calm and the other who is aggressive. I am really particular about things and I want things my way! Shruti is more of a quiet and a happy-go-lucky one. In relationships, sometimes, we need to balance both of it. How I support professionally is whatever my experiences have been, I share with her and I give her my views and how things should move. She has complete JUNE, 2012 75

Shruti – The days which involved discussing with my grandparents, about my marriage to Girish. The best relationship advice you ever got – Girish and Shruti – Modern parents have learnt that they should not pressurize kids with their dreams and aspirations imposing on them. We think a strong sense of direction and options should be given to the kids, with pros and cons and make them aware of the situation. Most sensible parents want their kids not to waste money and deprive them of things which they can afford. But that may make the kids somewhere non-contended, which will reflect in their personalities. We should bring them up as contended and confident kids with value for money and make them realize that they are fortunate enough.

AERIAL AWE

AIRBUS A380

World’s Largest Passenger Airliner… The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by the European corporation Airbus, a subsidiary of EADS. The A380’s upper deck extends along the entire length of the fuselage, with a width equivalent to a wide-body aircraft. This allows for an A380-800’s cabin with 478 square metres (5,145.1 sq ft) of floor space; 49% more floor space than the next-largest airliner, the Boeing 747-400 with 321 square metres (3,455.2 sq ft) and provides seating for 525 people in a typical three-class configuration or up to 853 people in all-economy class configurations. The A380-800 has a design range of 15,400 kilometres (8,300 nmi; 9,600 mi), sufficient to fly from New York to Hong Kong and a cruising speed of Mach 0.85 (about 900 km/h or 560 mph at cruising altitude). The A380 is available with two types of turbofan engines, the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 (variants A380-841, −842 and −843F) or the Engine Alliance GP7000 (A380-861 and −863F). The Trent 900 is a derivative of the Trent 800 and the GP7000 has roots from the GE90 and PW4000. The Trent 900 core is a scaled version of the Trent 500, but incorporates the swept fan technology of the stillborn Trent 8104. The GP7200 has a GE90-derived core and PW4090-derived fan and low-pressure turbo-machinery. The A380 was used to demonstrate the viability of a synthetic fuel comprising standard jet fuel with a natural-gas-derived component. The A380 is the first commercial airliner to have a central wing box made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. It is also the first to have a smoothly contoured wing cross section. The cabin has features to reduce traveller fatigue such as a quieter interior and higher pressurization than previous aircraft; the A380 has 50% less cabin noise than the 747-400 and is pressurized to the equivalent of 1,520 m (5,000 ft) altitude versus 2,440 m (8,000 ft) on the 747-400. It offers a flying experience no other aircraft in the sky can match and redefines the meaning of comfort for all passengers – whether they are premium customers in first and business class or leisure travellers in the economy cabin. Airbus has gone to great lengths to make long-haul flying aboard the A380 feel more natural for its passengers – with broader seats, more personal storage, better head room and wider stairs and aisles. The cabin air is recycled every three minutes to keep the atmosphere fresh, while natural light is provided by 220 cabin windows. Four high-level air outlets – as opposed to the industry standard of two – helps passengers feel refreshed, both during and after the flight. Airbus’ double-deck jetliner benefits from significant weight savings brought by composites and other advanced materials – which comprise 25 per cent of its structure – as well as the weight, reliability and cost benefits of new systems such as the hydraulic system that operates at a pressure level of 5,000 psi. In addition, it features an advanced cockpit with the latest interactive displays and avionics and retains the unique benefits of Airbus operational commonality between all fly-by-wire models. By producing only about 75g of CO2 per passenger kilometre – which is well below current international limits – the A380 also is supporting the air transport sector’s commitment to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. 78 JUNE, 2012

The city attracted people from diverse walks of life, including tourists and students apart from Socialites, Tollywood and Bollywood personalities. With mango mania still on at most of the eating outlets, the crowd is sure enough to have a cool rest of the Summer.

GEMINI

Gemini is denoted by the sign of Twins and is the third zodiac sign. People born under this sign are dual natured, complex and contradictory, which is very well evident from the sign of Twins. They are affectionate, courteous, kind, generous, and thoughtful towards poor and suffering. Geminies accept new activities with great enthusiasm but lack the same at the time of implementation. Their versatility makes them adaptable and of an adjusting nature. They feel good to dazzle with their intelligence and quick wit and are consequently the star of any party. They are good scientists and army personnel as well. JUNE, 2012 93
