Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs

We are extremely proud of the growth of our Annual Fund. In the 1999-2000 fiscal year, we raised a record $746,354. In just six years, the total has increased by more than one million dollars. Last year your support provided $1,755,871! The most important aspect of the Annual Fund is that it provides scholarships for students. It should really be called the Annual Scholarship Fund. The objective of the Annual Scholarship Fund is to bridge the gap that our endowment doesn’t provide for scholarships. After all, it’s about the students, and it always will be.

Our overall goal for the Annual Scholarship Fund is $1.8 million. We know that $1.4 million is required to cover the costs of scholarships for our current College and Seminary students. Where will that money come from?

The A.R.P. Synod has budgeted $588,000 for their gift to the Annual Scholarship Fund. Those dollars are needed and appreciated. It also means that alumni and friends will have to cover the remaining $1,212,000 to make our goal of $1.8 million. Above and beyond our needs for scholarships, we also need gifts for the Flying Fleet and other projects.

If you are an alumnus or alumna of Erskine College, your Annual Scholarship Fund gift will count towards your class percentage goal and dollar goal set by our Alumni Board of Directors. If each class meets their goals, we will raise enough money to cover our scholarship commitments that the institution has promised to our current students.

There are six ways to appeal to alumni and friends to encourage gifts to our Annual Scholarship Fund:

We are doing all of the above. Occasionally, I am asked if we could send fewer solicitations. My answer to that is similar to the United Way Campaign slogan a few years ago – “If it wasn’t important, we wouldn’t ask.” We need to remember that it’s all about the students, and it always will be. I won’t apologize for trying to help our students, and it is my responsibility to move our Annual Scholarship Fund forward.

The purpose of this message is to raise the awareness of the importance of annual giving, and to let our alumni and friends know that we value and appreciate every single gift. We have targeted goals for each class: a percentage goal and a total class money goal. We have received an incredible boost from the great work by our Class Representatives and other volunteer leaders. Our Class Reps are contacting their classmates and encouraging gifts. A major reason for our improvements in the Annual Scholarship Fund is that our Alumni Association is taking ownership and realizing that it is YOUR fund. My job is to find as many ways as we can to ask the very important questions: Will you help? Will you increase your gift? Will you help us recruit new students? Will you help us build our volunteer work force? We need your answers to be a resounding “YES!”

Our Annual Scholarship Fund Co-Chairs for this year are Erskine All-Stars. Eleanor Chesnut Richardson (Class of 1959) and Randy Ruble (Class of 1958) were asked by me to lead this important project. We are now blessed to have Dr. Ruble as the president of our institution, and he gladly continues to promote the Annual Scholarship Fund. Eleanor is a valued friend, a past Alumni Association President, and a savvy fund-raiser. I am very proud to have these two special people as our Co-Chairs. Please help us celebrate all of the wonderful things at Erskine by affirming your support with a gift to the Annual Scholarship Fund.

We are off to a fantastic start to this year’s Annual Scholarship Fund. This year’s number of gifts and dollar amounts are ahead of last year’s record pace. Please help us keep the momentum going, and make the decision to support our current students. They are worth it, just as you were worthy of support when you were a student. It’s your turn to help, and we hope you feel it’s your responsibility.

Homecoming 2006 - The appointment of a new president and the groundbreaking for the Memorial Hall project were more than enough reason for celebration at this year’s Homecoming, but there were plenty of other moments that made the event one to remember.

RUBLE named 14th president

If you’re looking for the new president of Erskine College and Seminary these days, don’t expect to find him behind his desk in Belk Hall. You’re more likely to see Dr. Randall T. Ruble, known as “Randy” to many in the college and seminary community, in the dining hall talking to students, in a hallway talking to a faculty member or in an administrative office talking to staff members.

“Some have said my form of leadership is that of a cheerleader,” Ruble says, laughing, but then turns serious. “I like to affirm people — I like to see people succeed.”

Named interim president in August and elevated to full-time permanent president by the Board of Trustees in October, Ruble says the main thing that drives him, in his professional, civic and home life, is a “desire to serve God.”

That, Ruble says, is the main reason that he gave up retirement and filled a vacuum of leadership at Erskine College and Seminary, first on an interim basis and now as the undisputed leader of the institution.

“I was comfortable in retirement, I have six grandchildren, I was serving a small church,” he said. “From the first interview, I asked God to shut the door, but He didn’t.

I wound up being selected as president with strong support from the board.”

Another thing that motivates Ruble is his love for Erskine, where he has been a college and seminary student, professor and senior administrator for more than 40 years. “I’ve given to this institution, in many cases sacrificially, because I believe in its mission and what it’s trying to accomplish,” he said. Ruble said he is also driven by the “concept of excellence.”

When he was asked to step in as the interim president of the college and seminary, Ruble said he made it clear that he didn’t want to be a “one-week-a-month guy” — that if he does something, “I’m going to do it 100 percent.”

An ordained Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister for many years, Ruble carries some of the qualities of a pastor into his new job. “My modus operandi is pastoral care,” he said. “I like to visit offices, find out where people are. I go to the dining hall between 7 and 8 each morning because I care about students and I want to get to know them.”

While a number of factors motivate him, Ruble said the thing that sustains him goes back to God — prayer. “It’s rare that people come into this office that I don’t pray with them,” he said.

Ruble sees his role as “maintaining a vision of what Erskine can become.”

“I want to see us implement the vision that is articulated in our mission statement — faith and learning,” the Erskine president said. “We need to instruct students about living out their faith. One of the most important things Erskine can do is help students develop strong character, and that includes compassion and a good work ethic.”

That part of the Erskine experience can be as important as what they learn in the classroom, Ruble said, because so many students wind up doing something other than what they train for during college.

“We need to equip students to be people who know themselves,” he said. “We need to help make them better people. We pour a lot of knowledge into them, but it is the values you develop that are important.”

Ruble says that when it comes to integrating faith and learning, “we need to do more than talk about it.”

One of the ways you begin to do that is by “articulating a sense of community,” he said.

“We’re not trying to build a church, but a community that follows the admonitions of Scripture,” Ruble said.

He said there are no easy answers or magical formulas to achieve a balance between Christian commitment and excellence in academics, but building that sense of community among all Erskine constituencies is a good place to start, plus dialogue among the key players.

“If we’re intentional about it we can see results,” Ruble said. “We can’t just assume it’s going to happen because of what we say.”

Although he’s still in what might be considered the “honeymoon” period of his administration, Ruble said he’s been “pleasantly surprised” by the strong show of support for his presidency.

“I’ve found that people have been very affirming to me — some people are still reserving judgment — nobody has come at me yet,” Ruble said with a chuckle. “I’m not immune to criticism, but I’ve always said, ‘Let’s do what’s right and honor Christ and whatever it is will work out.’”

Ruble graduated from Erskine College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history. He received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Erskine Theological Seminary in 1961 and the Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1962. Ruble did graduate work at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1964.

Ruble’s ministry has been centered on his work as an educator at Erskine College and Theological Seminary. He served as Chaplain of the College (1971-74), Professor of Old Testament at Erskine Seminary (196597), Assistant Dean of the Seminary (197576), and Vice President and Dean of Erskine Theological Seminary for 21 years from 1976 through 1997.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Erskine College in 1958 with a bachelor of arts degree in English and history. Received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Erskine Theological Seminary in 1961 and the Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1962. CAREER: His ministry has centered on his work as an educator at Erskine College and Theological Seminary. Min.) and Master of Arts in Christian Education (M.A.C.E.) programs; the growth of off-campus programs in several locations; and the enhancement of seminary facilities and scholarship funds.

CHURCH: Active in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving as Stated Supply Pastor of the ARP Church in Abbeville since 1967. He was appointed supply pastor of the Mt. Carmel ARP Church in 1990. He has served as a member and officer on a number of boards, commissions and committees of the Virginia and Second Presbyteries and was Vice Moderator of General Synod in 1973 and Moderator in 1975.

CIVIC: Active in the community, having served on the Due West Town Council, he was one of the organizers of the Due West Rescue Squad. He has been president of the United Way, chairman of the Heart Fund, and president of the Municipal Association. Ruble is a member of both the Abbeville Lions and Rotary Clubs.

PERSONAL: He is married to the former Molly Grant, a member of the Class of 1960. They have three children, all of whom attended Erskine College, and six grandchildren. Erskine’s new president was born in Augusta County, Virginia, was educated in the public schools of Rockbridge County, Virginia, and graduated from high school in Collingdale, Pa. From 1951-55, he served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War Zone. For his service there he was awarded the Korean War Commendation Medal.

HONORS: He was listed in “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” and was given the H.M. Young Ring, the highest award presented to a graduating senior at Erskine. Upon retirement as dean of Erskine Seminary, Ruble was named Vice President and Dean Emeritus. Ruble was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by Erskine College and Erskine Theological Seminary in 1999.

Erskine Memorial Hall project under way

An overflow crowd of alumni and friends gathered Nov. 18 at Erskine College and Seminary for the groundbreaking of the Memorial Hall music and math building project. The groundbreaking, signaling the start of construction on the Joseph H. and Nena Moss Mathematics and Music Educational Complex, comes as the Gold Campaign, slated to end Dec. 31, approaches its goal of $36.8 million. Construction is expected to be completed over the next 15 months.

The music education facility will be named in honor of Robert Moultrie’s wife, Cheryl, and will be called the Cheryl Moultrie Music Educational Complex, according to Lee Logan, vice president for development and senior philanthropic adviser.

Completion is set for February 2008, Logan said.

The Mosses were not present for the celebration, but Moultrie spoke of Moss’s generosity and talked about how Moss “fell in love with the college” years ago.

For his part, Moultrie, an engineer and a Georgia Tech graduate, told his own story about his experience with Erskine, recalling how he brought his son to campus 20 years ago and saying the college has grown to be of great importance to him and his wife, Cheryl.

“This college has come to mean a lot to me,” Moultrie said. “It’s been very easy for me to give to this college. I know that my dollars are needed here and will be put to good use here.”

He cited the musical talent at Erskine, including the Gospel Choir, who opened Saturday’s festivities with a pair of selections, and the Choraleers, who closed the celebration with a selection and the Erskine alma mater. Professor Shannon Jeffreys, director of the Choraleers, invited all former Choraleers to join the current group in singing the school song.

Alumni Association President Westley D. McAllister presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. “What a great day to be in Due West and great day for celebration,” he said.

McAllister said much has been accomplished by alumni in donating to the Annual Fund – raising $7.5 million for the Gold Campaign capital fund-raising effort for a $5 million goal — and the future is bright under the leadership of new President Randall T. Ruble.

“We’ve increased our giving amounts and our class percentages without a sitting

president,” McAllister said. “Imagine what mountains can be moved under the leadership of Dr. Ruble.”

The Alumni Association president gave accolades to former board of trustees chairman John Moore, current chairman Guy H. “Chip” Smith III, the Alumni Association, Gold Campaign chairmen Joe and Kathy Black, Bill Ranson, Gordon Query and Mary Lou Pearson.

McAllister paid tribute to the Memorial Hall project’s largest benefactors, the Moultries and the Mosses. “You have made history today,” he said. “Your gifts have made a difference in the future of Erskine as an academic village.”

The crowd gave a standing ovation to Logan, who is retiring at the end of the year. “Erskine College and Seminary is a better place today because of his contributions to a place that he calls home,” McAllister said.

Ralph Patterson, director of annual giving and alumni affairs, presented incentive awards to class representatives Dr. James McGill ‘53 and Charles McKinney ‘60 for meeting class goals for percentage and dollar goals during the most recent Annual Fund drive, which raised more than $1.7 million.

Ruble spoke during the gathering, offering some reflections on the history of Memorial Hall and where it is constructed, on the former campus of the Due West Female College. He stressed the importance of the project for students.

“When I learned we were going to do this on Nov. 18, the first people I wanted to know that information were the students,” the Erskine president said.

The music education complex, coupled with the math wing, will bring together components that have been central to the Erskine liberal arts education — music and mathematics or arts and sciences, on a grander scale, he said.

Ruble noted the contributions of classmate Jan Westmoreland, as well as those of former president Dr. John Carson and his wife, Sarah Ellen.

Smith addressed the group briefly, saying, “We’re meeting an important need here at the college.” He acknowledged Moore, who was board chairman during most of the Gold Campaign, and Dave Cathcart, a board member and chairman of the development committee that has overseen the campaign.

Senior church music major T.J. Ellis spoke on behalf of students, who he said are “overjoyed” that the project is moving forward.

Business students compete in real world through

‘Get Real’ curriculum

Two teams of business students competed against each other through two Abbeville coffee shops to get a feel for the “real world” as part of the Erskine College business department’s new “Get Real” curriculum.

The coffee shops, Abbey’s Alley and Ada’s Place, are located close to each other on the square in Abbeville.

The two teams were made up of students from two different classes — an advertising class and a personal selling class. Each team was assigned a coffee shop and worked with the owner/client, acting as a marketing agency.

Assistant Professor of Business Administration Tony Santella said, “The team that raised the revenue the highest percentage from last year was the winner and received more points than the other team.”

The purpose of the assignment was to give students hands-on experience in the business world. Students were also using skills they learned in the classroom such as advertising, marketing and sales skills.

Abbeville County Development Board Executive Director Steve Bowles was complimentary of the effort.

“The innovative approach taken by Professor Santella was excellent,” Bowles said. “He constructed a vehicle to get real-life experience into the hands and minds of his students while

simultaneously improving sales conditions for two businesses. This is a practical application of a win-win situation.

“Erskine can be proud of its student body as well as the Small Business Support Center.”

Abbey’s Alley is a coffee shop that sells specialty coffee and also sells antiques. An open mic night competition between Erskine and Lander students and a reading for children led by Erskine students were offered by the Abbey’s Alley team to attract customers.

Ada’s Place is also a coffee shop. There was a pottery painting contest on the first day of the competition and the shop hosted “An Evening with Dave Brothers” that night.

Both shops had coupons available to help promote sales.

Catherine Tolbert, a member of the Abbey’s Alley team, was excited about the competition and said the teams put a lot of hard work into the project.

Both teams significantly increased their shops’ profitability during the competition. “We were all very happy with the outcome,” Tolbert said. “We learned so much more than you can learn out of a textbook.”

Tolbert, Jamey Dagenhart, Ashley Owens and Steven King made up the Abbey’s Alley team. Students on the Ada’s Place team were Drew Carlisle, Jesse Kraay, Laura Merrell and Ashley Neely.

Drummond Center project becomes more than a dream

State funding toward a full professorship and an agreement with U.S. Land that will result in construction of a conference center at Lake Russell are marks of progress for the Drummond Center for Statesmanship, one of eight areas of emphasis in Erskine’s Gold Campaign.

For Dr. Jay West, vice president for institutional relations and executive director of the Drummond Center, a state appropriation of $700,000 toward an endowed professorship in political economy at Erskine is the culmination of several years of work. “It’s been a long process, but the rewards have been great,” he said.

The college’s most recent strategic plan included a recommendation to develop the major in political economy. Establishing the professorship is a step toward that goal.

The prospect of a Drummond Center facility at Lake Russell is also an exciting one for West. “This is historic for Erskine,” he said.

Last year, the foundation of U.S. Land, a company that is developing some 1,000 homes in the area, donated $100,000 to the college to provide a recreation facility for Erskine students on Lake Russell.

The company also donated property on the lake for development of a Drummond Center facility and the “Memorandum of Understanding” signed in August puts that development in reach.

“There’s no overhead cost (for the college),” West said, noting that Erskine students will have access to golf, tennis, water sports, and a nature conservatory given to the college by U.S. Land.

PAC raises

$5,000 at Family Day silent auction

The Parent Association Council raised close to $5,000 in its annual silent auction Nov. 4 during Family Day at Erskine College. The money will go directly for student life activities and events.

Associate Dean of Students Penny Thomas said there were about 500 guests on campus for the event and 28 faculty members took the time to be in their offices to meet with family members of students.

The Parent Association Council put a lot of work into the event, Thomas said. Mickey and Lydia Baker, who serve as co-presidents, headed a group of leaders that included Gloria Johnson, Buddy and Kim Ferguson and Marie Tanner, and other council members assisted them.

Stuarts, staff member honored with E.B. Kennedy semifinalists

Erskine College welcomed some 130 E.B. Kennedy Scholarship semifinalists to campus Dec. 1. During an evening banquet and program, members of the Stuart family, which established the scholarship, and former staff member Allyson Bell Huskey ’86 were honored with special gifts.

Erskine President Dr. Randall T. Ruble and Executive Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Donald Weatherman presented to the Stuarts framed prints of a photograph designed to represent a story often told about Dr. E.B. Kennedy, in whose honor the scholarships are given. “It shows a rocking chair, a Bible that belonged to Dr. Kennedy, and an old gun,” Erskine Registrar Charlene Haynes said.

Kennedy often sat outside in a rocking chair with an open Bible and a shotgun in his lap, and could wield both with ease. “He was protecting his pecan trees from the squirrels,” said Crosland Stuart, executive director of the Stuart Foundation, whose great-grandmother was Kennedy’s sister.

Stuart’s father, Bill Stuart, was featured in a video presentation shown at the banquet, entitled, “E.B. Kennedy — The Inspiration.”

Members of the Stuart family joined in recognizing Huskey, who worked with the E.B. Kennedy Scholarship program for 11 years. Huskey, formerly executive secretary to Weatherman, recently resigned her position to devote more time to her family.

Referring to their work with the E.B. Kennedy program over the years, Crosland Stuart told Huskey, “You and I cut our teeth together,” and expressed the family’s gratitude. The Stuart family gave Huskey a necklace with a cross pendant as a token of its appreciation for her years of service.

The E.B. Kennedy Scholarships are funded by the Edward C. Stuart Foundation Inc. in Bartow, Fla., and an E.B. Kennedy Scholarship Fund.

Teacher education program gains national accreditation

The Department of Education at Erskine College recently announced that its Teacher Education Program has been awarded national accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The announcement follows an extended period of self-study and preparation by the department and a five-day National Accreditation Visit April 22-26. NCATE’s board of examiners met in late October to make their decision.

“All of the programs at Erskine College received National Recognition,” said Professor of Secondary Education Maggie Emery, noting that only 50 percent of all programs submitted by schools nationwide received such recognition last year.

“One of the highlights of the entire process was that the graduating class of 2005 asked if they could come back during the 2006 team visit,” she said. “The team was overwhelmed by the quality of these recent graduates and their tremendous success during their first year of teaching.”

Jennifer Boggs, a 2005 graduate, spoke about her experience as an education major. “What we learned is equally as important as how we learned and who we learned from,” she said. “Most importantly, we were taught to teach as we were taught day in and day out … by loving first and teaching second.”

Emery expressed gratitude for the support the department received during the accreditation process. “Although NCATE accreditation is about education programs, it is really about all of us here.”

Adams Art Studio dedicated

The Margaret W. “Peggy” Adams Art Studio in the Galloway Applied Arts Building was dedicated July 31 at Erskine College. The ceremony included the unveiling of a plaque honoring Adams.

Adams came to Erskine in 1987 as a parttime teacher of art appreciation and also served as director of the Bowie Arts Center beginning shortly after its opening in 1995. She retired in 2004.

She noted that the inspiration for improving the studio space in the Galloway Building came from Erskine benefactor Alex Patrick of Greenville.

“It’s Alex Patrick’s concept — he realized that the studio facilities needed some help,” Adams explained. “I think this is going to be a real boost for the art program here at Erskine, and it will be good for the students.”

The Galloway Building served as the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Printing Office from 1889 to 1976, and was renovated to provide studio space for Erskine art majors. It is named in memory of Robert Speer Galloway and Robert Stone Galloway, owners and publishers, who donated the building to Erskine College.

Student Highlights

F Erskine College junior Jennifer Overcash has been selected to receive the Walter Jensen Scholarship for Study Abroad for 2007-08 from the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). Overcash plans a semester of study in Avignon, France, beginning in January 2007.

F Erskine College senior psychology major Nicole Crosby was one of two students awarded a Ruth Kelley Scholarship Nov. 2 at the Annual Dinner Meeting of the Mental Health Association in Abbeville County (MHAAC).

Crosby is president of the Erskine Society for Psychology (ESP) and also serves as an officer for two other organizations, the Philo Women and the Association of Minority Students (AMS).

F Erskine College senior Catherine Tolbert received a pair of honors during the South Carolina Student Legislature fall session in Columbia, attended by delegates from 14 colleges and universities throughout the state.

A business major from Statesville, N.C., Tolbert received the Best Representative Award and the Best Legislation Award at the conclusion of the four-day session. “It was unexpected,” Tolbert said of the awards she received.

Tolbert, chairman of the Erskine College Student Legislature chapter, led a delegation to Columbia that also included freshman Gabe Dix of Waxhaw, N.C.; sophomore Craig Goodwin of Greenville; junior Rebecca Jackson of Chesnee; and junior Daniel Wells of Tampa, Fla.

F Biology major Caleb McMahan participated in the Research Training Program (RTP) this summer at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.

“The Research Training Program (RTP) at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum is a great program full of opportunities you just cannot experience anywhere else,” McMahan said.

Also during the summer, McMahan attended the National Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in New Orleans, where he met a number of prominent herpetologists and made “many contacts” with scholars he is interested in working with when he begins graduate studies.

F Kimberly Kanapeckas, a senior majoring in biology, traveled to Africa on her own this summer, undertaking research on the associations between bovine tuberculosis and blood parasites in the Cape buffalo population of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal.

Shortly before leaving for Africa, she learned that an article she had written on hunting ethics was being published in The African Sporting Gazette: Africa’s Premier Journal of Big Game Hunting.

Kanapeckas plans to move to South Africa after she graduates from Erskine. “I want to get licensed as a professional hunter and earn my veterinary degree,” she said.

Erskine fall athletic teams make competitive foes

Erskine’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, along with the men’s and women’s cross country squads, enjoyed a competitive fall season. Flying Fleet men’s cross-country runner John Sell, a senior, was among the standouts for Erskine.

Sell competed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on the campus of Wingate University in North Carolina, capping a stellar season that saw him lead the Flying Fleet to second place in the Erskine Invitational. His 27:23 in the 8K was his fastest time ever on the Erskine course.

Freshman Adam Groblewski picked up his second straight top 10 finish by coming in sixth in the Fleet’s only home meet of the season.

But it was John Sell who captured the imagination of Fleet fans – he won the Limestone Invitational and the Lander Invitational.

As Mark Peeler wound up his first season as coach of the men’s team, Groblewski and Joe Sell, another freshman, paced Erskine to a fourth-place finish in the Presbyterian College Invitational.

Maggie Peeler didn’t fare as well in her first year as coach of the women’s cross-country team, but still fielded a competitive squad.

The team finished sixth in the Erskine Invitational, led by senior Chris Pack and junior Lauren Cross. Pack and Cross also paced the Lady Fleet at PC, where Erskine finished seventh. The women placed eighth at Limestone and in the same position at Lander.

Third-year women’s soccer coach Serge Lipovetsky again led his team to a spot in the CVAC post-season tournament, as the Lady Fleet earned the seventh seed.

Erskine posted a 5-14-1 mark overall, ending its season with a 2-0 loss at the hands of second-seeded Belmont Abbey.

The Lady Fleet were competitive in CVAC play, posting a 5-5 regular season mark – the highlight of which was a 3-0 shutout of rival Anderson University. .

Erskine also posted wins over CVAC competitors St. Andrews, Coker, Converse and Lees-McRae.

Another highlight of the season was sophomore forward Casey Cash being named CVAC player of the week.

First-year men’s soccer coach Warren Turner put a competitive squad on the field for each game. Turner’s team finished the season with a 3-12-1 mark overall, 1-8-1 in CVAC play.

Erskine earned a 1-1 draw at home against LeesMcRae, during which sophomore forward John Michael Leppert scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The team’s lone CVAC win of the season came in a 4-1 decision over Barton College, followed by a 4-0 shutout of Chowan College.

Logan’s 33 years of service to Erskine celebrated E

rskine Vice President for Development and Senior Philanthropic Advisor Lee W. Logan was honored Nov. 18 by nearly 200 well-wishers at a reception and dinner in Moffatt Dining Hall on the Erskine campus.

Logan, a 33-year member of the Erskine administration who plans to retire at the end of December, graduated from Erskine College in 1967. He began his work at Erskine with a job in the alumni office.

“Lee’s focus has been people, relationships, one-on-one, face to face,” Alumni Association President Wes McAllister said. “I don’t believe there’s one person here tonight who hasn’t been touched by Lee’s gentle persuasion.”

Recalling that he had learned about sports by watching others, Logan said of his Erskine career, “When you’re surrounded by bright, intelligent people who love this place, if they do the backhand a certain way, do it that way, and you’ll get it over the net.”

S.C. House Rep. Paul Agnew presented Logan with a certificate of commendation from members of the Abbeville County Delegation and members of the House of Representatives

recognizing him as an “outstanding citizen of Abbeville County.”

Logan, married to alumna Eleanor Grier Logan, is a longtime member of the Due West ARP Church, where he has been a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He has served on numerous boards, including those of the Due West Retirement Center and the John De La Howe School. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club.

“This is a wonderful tribute,” Logan said. “We’ve all heard the expression,’don’t shoot the messenger,’ but don’t glorify the messenger either — this is really about the Erskine family. I’ve just been the transporter of the message.”

Erskine College and Seminary President Dr. Randall T. Ruble announced the creation of an Erskine College scholarship in Logan’s honor.

“I invite all of you to give to it,” he said.

Taylor Conference and Hospitality Room dedicated

The Taylor Conference and Hospitality Room, located on the home side balcony area of Belk Arena in the Galloway Center, was dedicated Nov. 18 just prior to the men’s basketball game at homecoming.

The new room is the result of a gift by longtime supporters Dr. Richard G. Taylor ‘69 and wife Janet Fellers Taylor ‘68 of Greenville.

Furnishings for the room were provided by a gift from the Alumni Association Board of Directors in honor of Executive Vice President and Senior Philanthropic Advisor Lee Logan.

“We are very appreciative of Dr. and Mrs. Taylor,” Athletic Director Mark Peeler said.

“We will use the room for Flying Fleet Club meetings, staff meetings, and other events, and we now have a great place to host our season ticket holders.”

Richard Taylor has served as team orthopedic surgeon and both Richard and Janet have served on the Erskine Board of Trustees.

Experienced leaders launch Erskine Annual Fund 2006-07

The Erskine Alumni Association recently announced that Eleanor Richardson ‘59 of Flat Rock, N.C., and Dr. Randall T. Ruble ‘58 of Due West will serve as co-chairs for the 2006-07 Annual Fund campaign.

Both Richardson and Ruble were named co-chairs before Ruble was appointed interim president, then named 14th president of Erskine College and Seminary, and he agreed to continue as co-chair.

Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Ralph Patterson joked about this year’s unusual situation. “The Annual Fund co-chair is a high-

level position,” he said. “It helped catapult Dr. Ruble into the president’s office.”

Richardson, whose first job at Erskine was a work-study position for Dr. Charles Carlisle in the business office, served nearly 12 years as an Erskine staff member, and went on to a career in development.

Ruble’s Erskine connections and fund-raising experience are also considerable. Beginning as a professor in 1965, he served as vice president and dean of Erskine Seminary from 1976-97. He has served as a leader in a number of civic organizations, including the United Way and the Heart Fund.

Cliff Wallace continues success in Hong Kong with new role

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) has announced that Erskine alumnus Cliff Wallace, managing director of the HKCEC, was elected executive vice president of UFI, the global association of the exhibition industry, at UFI’s 73rd Annual Congress in Beijing in November.

Wallace will serve as executive vice president with UFI’s new president, Jochen Witt of Cologne, Germany, and will assume duties as president in October 2007.

UFI, established in 1925, is a worldwide

organization representing the trade fair and exhibition industry. It currently represents 326 member organizations from 168 cities in 73 countries that organize more than 4,500 exhibitions throughout six continents.

Wallace, a former trustee and member of the Class of 1968 who majored in mathematics, got an early start in the auditorium and convention business when he worked at Greenville Memorial Auditorium as a young boy.

Wallace is married to Erskine graduate Susan Safrit Wallace and they are the parents of three daughters.

Graduate named General Counsel, U.S. Department of Education

Kent Talbert ‘82 was sworn in July 17 as General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Education.

The Greenwood native and 1985 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law previously served as Education Policy Counsel for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce; on the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions in the United States Senate; and on the staff of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond.

“Kent brings great integrity, talent, and a strong work ethic to the U.S. Department of Education, and his years of experience make him an outstanding choice as General Counsel,” U.S. Department of Education Secretary Margaret Spellings said.

As an Erskine student, Talbert was named

to Garnet Circle; was active in the leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa and the history honor society Phi Alpha Theta; was a member of the Philomathean Literary Society; and participated in the Student Government Association (SGA), serving as SGA president in 1981-82.

Talbert said that he did not foresee a career related to politics. “However, serving in the SGA whetted my appetite a bit,” he admitted. “Serving in the public sector has been very satisfying.”

Never afraid of hard work himself, Talbert recommends diligence to others and advises Erskine students to “improve continuously your writing and analytical skills, take challenging courses, get active in student activities where you learn to lead, manage and organize, and keep working hard.”

Expanded Chesnut Room dedicated

Erskine administrators, staff members and guests gathered in the newly renovated and expanded Chesnut Room of Belk Hall Oct. 16 to celebrate the completion of the project, which was funded by David and Linda Chesnut of Decatur, Ga.

Linda Chesnut created the interior design of the new suite, which includes the original Chesnut Room and an adjoining room with facilities for food service.

The Chesnut Room, with its large round table and central chandelier, was initially furnished by David Chesnut’s stepmother in memory of his father, John Harvey Chesnut.

Chesnut, an attorney who is a member of the Class of 1961, is an active Erskine volunteer with his wife Linda. He is a former president of the Erskine Alumni Association.

Henry McClain Jr., director of plant operations and maintenance, and the facilities management team were also recognized for their work on the project.

“If it weren’t for each one of these guys in facilities, we couldn’t have gotten it done,” Linda Chesnut said. “It’s a team.”

Erskine familiar territory for new music professor

Erskine College has welcomed back one of its own — 1997 summa cum laude graduate James Brooks Kuykendall — as assistant professor of music. After leaving Erskine, he earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University and taught at Calvin College.

“It was being here as a student that led me to pursue teaching as a career,” he said. “I saw the sorts of things that my professors did, and I wanted to do the same.”

He credits the late Dr. John Brawley, who founded Sinfonia, with exerting “profound influence on so much of the way I ‘do’ music.”

Former faculty members Dr. Porter Stokes and Dr. Matthew Manwarren and Associate Professor of Music Robert Glick also left their mark.

Kuykendall grew up in Due West, took music lessons from Professor Emerita Shirley Lampton, and was influenced by Professor Emerita Cortlandt Koonts.

“Erskine is a very musical community, and I’ve been influenced and encouraged by many outside of the music department proper.”

Kuykendall’s father, the late Dr. William H.F. Kuykendall, is remembered as a teacher of archaeology, Bible and history by generations of Erskine College and Seminary alumni.

“It is a little strange to be walking on the same ground that my father pounded for years, though I can hardly say I’m following in his footsteps,” Kuykendall said.

Kuykendall is married to attorney Patricia Bolen, who practices law in Abbeville and is also a musician.

Major grant awarded to Seminary associate dean, director of online instruction

Dr. Stephen D. Lowe, associate dean and professor of Christian education at Erskine Theological Seminary, and his wife, Mary Lowe, the seminary’s director of online instruction, are receiving a major grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion.

The Lowes are receiving a $70,000 grant that will support a three-year consultation on the subject of spiritual formation of seminary students enrolled in distance education courses and degree programs.

The grant proposal, titled, “Seeing Through a Glass Darkly: A Three-Year Consultation on Student Spiritual Formation in Theological Distance Education,” will enable the seminary to host the event over the next three years.

The seminary will invite selected participants from around the United States to deliberate and discuss pressing issues and concerns related to the spiritual formation of students who are enrolled in online courses as part of their seminary education.

Steve and Mary Lowe will serve as co-directors of the project and will write a position paper on spiritual formation in distance education that will serve as a catalyst for the faceto-face meetings of the participants.

Participants will also assist in refining and modifying the position paper, write articles related to the consultation topics, and develop an evaluation model for assessing the impact of online learning on student spiritual formation.

The first consultation will take place in the fall of 2007 and run consecutively over the next three years.

Seminary professors keep presses running

Anumber of Erskine Seminary professors are prolific writers of book reviews, journal articles, reference book entries, and book chapters. Among these busy professors are six who have published books over the last several years (2003-06) on topics ranging from worship to homiletics and from the Book of Daniel to the works of Karl Barth.

Dr. Richard Burnett, associate professor of systematic theology, is the author of “Karl Barth’s Theological Exegesis: The Hermeneutical Principles of the Römerbrief Period,” published by Eerdmans in 2004.

Assistant Professor of Worship and Homiletics Dr. Michael Bush has edited “The Incomplete One: Words Occasioned by the Death of a Young Person,” published in 2005 by Eerdmans.

The latest book by Dr. Donald Fairbairn, professor of historical

theology, is “Grace and Christology in the Early Church,” published by Oxford University Press in 2003, released in paperback this year, and currently being translated into Russian.

The Rev. Robert Glick, associate professor of church music and worship, has written “With All Thy Mind: Worship That Honors the Way God Made Us.” His book, which he calls “the result of living a lifetime with one foot in the artistic world and the other foot in the theological world,” looks at the connection between worship style preference and right-and left-brain dominance.

John H. Leith Professor of Reformed Theology and Worship Dr. Hughes Oliphant Old is the author of a series on “The Reading and Preaching of Scripture in the Worship of the Christian Church,” and Volume 5 of his series was published by Eerdmans in 2004.

Dr. George Schwab, who serves as associate professor of Old Testament, has written “Hope in the Midst of a Hostile World: The Gospel According to Daniel,” published by P&R in 2006. The book is part of P&R Publishing’s series, “The Gospel According to the Old Testament.”

Schild’s own church, Lake Placid First Presbyterian Church (ARP) has a prayer garden on its grounds that displays the Ten Commandments. Schild’s pastor, the Rev. Raymond W. Cameron Jr., is a member of the Erskine College and Seminary Board of Trustees.

Erskine Seminary professor intrigued by engines

Dr. L oyd Melton has spent the last 23 years teaching Erskine Seminary students about the Word of God and equipping them to become ministers.

Melton, a native of Greenwood, has been interested in cars for years as a hobby and he took that hobby to the next step by enrolling at Piedmont Technical College, where he earned an associate’s degree in auto mechanics in 1982.

His exploits in the automotive field were recently featured on the Piedmont Tech Web site, and published in The Press and Banner in Abbeville.

Melton joined the seminary faculty in 1983, and was installed last spring as the John Montgomery Bell Professor of Biblical Studies

He said he has always been in-

terested in cars, and after he became a professor at Erskine, he decided to take a few courses at Piedmont Tech to help him understand how cars work. “The more I got into it, the more I enjoyed it,” he recalled. “Typically, when I buy a car, I don’t get rid of it.”

But Melton’s interest in cars has little to do with looks and more to do with what makes a vehicle run.

“I’m not a car show person. When I talk about restoring cars, I am referring to the motors. I like to take an old car and make it run smooth,” he explained.

His favorites are 1940’s Fords and old Volkswagens. His first car was a 1964 VW, which he traded for the 1972 VW that he still owns and drives. This vehicle has about 392,000 miles on it and “still runs as good as new,” Melton said.

The new prayer garden is located next to the McCain Library on the Main Street side.

Margaret (Peg) Edwards Pursley, known as the “Daylily Lady,” has a large garden in the retirement community in Cary, N.C., where she now lives, as she did at her home in Gastonia, N.C. Of her daylilies, she says, “I sold many at home, but have given many away in Cary.” She serves as a garden judge, works in the greenhouse, and works with the Joy Singers.

Erskine Edwards has left his retirement home to live with his daughter, Edith Simpson of Gastonia, N.C. He is the brother of Lyle Edwards ‘38, who recently passed away.

Dr. Joab M. Lesesne, president of Wofford College for 28 years, was recently honored when one of the school’s residence halls was named after him. “Joab M. Lesesne Jr. Hall” houses nearly 100 students. Lesesne retired as president in 2000. He is a member of the Erskine Board of Trustees.

Class of 1961

William J. Ranson is now broker-in-charge of Prudential Carolinas Realty’s Lake Norman/ Denver sales office. A member of the Flying Fleet Board, he received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award.

Class of 1963

David Motes was inducted into the Laurens District Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2005. He earned 11 letters while at Laurens High School, in football, baseball, track and basketball. He was on the Laurens High relay team that broke the state record in 1956.

Class of 1964 (Seminary 1972)

Jerry R. Wright served as guest lecturer in the Anderson School of Theology for Lay Persons Lecture Series Sept. 24 at Young Memorial ARP Church, speaking on “Hunger for the Holy.” An ordained Presbyterian minister and licensed professional counselor, he is now an analyst in private practice in Decatur, Georgia.

Dottie Adams Gettys was featured with her sister Hope Jones in a May 31 story in The Rock Hill Herald about teachers retiring from the York school district. Both said leaving their students will be difficult. “It’s not a job,” Gettys said. “It’s a mission.” Also mentioned was Gettys’ sister Nancy Pugh, who is retiring from a Simpsonville school.

Ruth Boardman Miller, special services coordinator at FPG Child Development Institute (FPG) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has received a 2006 North Carolina State Employees’ Award for Excellence. She provides services to children with disabilities and their families. Mostly deaf since she was a toddler, she heard her first sounds at 59. Her mother kept her in a traditional school setting, where she earned a bachelor’s degree and later a master’s degree. She is married to Perry Miller ‘62.

Class of 1966

Claudia Ligon Brown, a guidance counselor at Rock Hill High School, was featured as the longest-tenured educator among those retiring from the Rock Hill school district. The Rock Hill Herald reported June 12 that Brown has been teaching and counseling in the district for 40 years. She started as a science major at Erskine, then married Maxie Brown ‘64 and transferred to Winthrop, where she majored in English and minored in science. She wanted to work in a laboratory, but loved student teaching so much that she took a teaching job instead.

Russell M. Harris reports that he is serving as executive director of the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation.

Class of 1972

Genie Goodwyn McDill received the Order of the Silver Crescent for her work as a teacher during a meeting of the Ware Shoals School District 51 Aug. 7. The Silver Crescent is the second highest civilian volunteer award in the state. She teaches social studies at Ware Shoals High School. She has twice been named teacher of the year for the district.

Rick D. Boulware will be retiring at the end of December after 27 years of teaching economics at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, and moving back to his hometown, Rock Hill. “As I’ve always said, and I’d like to say it again, I have always been quite proud of the very fine education I received at Erskine,” he said.

Dr. William A. “Bill” dePrater began a new ministry June 15 as executive presbyter of the Presbytery of Mississippi. He is a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and will be living in Hattiesburg, Miss.

James N. Boyce was featured in the June 4 edition of The Charlotte Observer’s “Neighbors” section. He is retiring after 31 years as a music teacher with Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. He directed the Independence High School choir and led the Patriot Singers in national competitions, never receiving a rating below “superior.” He plans to continue church music ministry, travel and spend time with wife Terry.

Leisa Myers Inglehart was one of two Lander University professors honored as 2006 Young Faculty Members of the Year. Inglehart teaches nursing and was honored as Young Faculty Teacher of the Year. The award is given annually to “a young faculty member who demonstrates the qualities associated with effective teaching.”

Margie Everett Barnes, operations shift manager at Oconee Nuclear Station, is the first recipient of the Patricia Bryant Leadership Award from U.S. Women in Nuclear (U.S. WIN). One of Duke Power’s first U.S. WIN members, she helped establish the Oconee chapter.

Class of 1981

Rosalind (Roz) Jennings has been named women’s basketball coach for the Alabama Southern Community College Eagles. She was previously assistant coach for the Mercer University Bears. She was recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Troy University, and coached at Paris Junior College in Texas, Lander University and Erskine College.

R. Lamar Simpson has been chosen to serve as executive vice president and chief financial officer of a new community bank, Carolina Aliance Bank, in Spartanburg. The facility will be built on South Church Street near the Spartanburg County Library and could open sometime in the first quarter of 2007.

Glenis Redmond, award-winning performance poet, praise poet, teacher and writer, was awarded the 2005-06 North Carolina Literary Fellowship by the North Carolina Arts Council.

The Arts Council has supported creative writers in North Carolina since 1981, with grants totaling nearly $1 million to date.

Class of 1988

David Agnew, president of Civic Square, a real estate development and consulting firm, is one of 20 South Carolina leaders in Liberty Fellowship’s class of 2008. They will share perspectives on challenges facing the state, attend seminars and complete a service project. The fellowship is a partnership of Hayne Hipp, Wofford College, and the Aspen Institute.

Curt Armstrong is living in France with his wife, Anne-Christine, and their three children, Adele, Caroline and Alban.

J. Michael Bitzer has been named department chair for Catawba College’s Department of History and Politics. He joined the Catawba faculty in 2002 as an assistant professor. He was named a 2006 Wye Faculty Fellow by the Aspen Institute.

F. Vernon Chandler was the recipient of the 2006 Heart of Universalism Award. The award was presented during the national Universalist Convocation in Ellisville, Miss. He and his wife, Nataliya, reside in Eberstadt, Germany.

Marc J. Ayers is the author of a Federalist Society “white paper” entitled “Staying the Course: An Update on the Alabama Supreme Court.”

Mark B. Ford reports he received a D.Min. degree this year from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is pastor of Cross Roads Baptist Church in Easley and he and his wife, a teacher at Pickens High School, have two new grandsons.

Chad M. Evans teaches at Westview Middle School and is head baseball coach at Emerald High School in Greenwood. He has been named Baseball Coach of the Year for Region III-AA for the past three years. His teams won the Region III-AA Championship in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and the District 3 Championship in 2004 and 2005. He was named AA State Coach of the Year in 2005 after his team won the Upper State Championship. He and wife Emmy are parents of Preston Luke, 5, and Riley Layne, 1.

Marci Tuten Greci is an associate of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Greenville, where she practices in the areas of intellectual property and technology law. She earned a J.D., cum laude, in 2003 from the Cleveland Marshall College of Law, and a Ph.D. in Polymer and Organic Chemical Synthetic Methodology from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2000. At USC, she conducted research under the direction of Dr. G.K.S. Prakash and Dr. George A. Olah, 1994 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, earning an Excellence in Research Award and an Excellence in Teaching Award.

Michael Lake has been serving as a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) assigned to Naval Special Warfare Team 4 in Fallujah, Iraq. He reports that his wife, Dama Black Lake ‘97, is ready for him to come home.

Melanie Seel Coetsee, a speech teacher at C.C. Pinckney School, was one of three teachers honored at the Fort Jackson Schools Teacher of the Year Celebration Nov. 30. Staff from each of the three schools elected a fellow educator as 2006-07 Teacher of the Year.

Anne Marie Howard Lopiccolo is now Alcohol and Drug Policy Manager for Exxon Mobil Corp. She continues to work in Houston, Texas, and has responsibility for all global policy, testing and aftercare programs for the company.

Amanda Page McCall teaches first grade at Starr Elementary School in Anderson. She was named 2006-07 Teacher of the Year at Starr and was then selected as Anderson District Three Teacher of the Year for 2006-07. She will apply for the state-level award in January.

Hailey Whitfield Walker lives with husband Bryan in Chesapeake, Va., where they have built a home. She was named for the sixth consecutive year to Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers, nominated for Disney Teacher of the Year for the sixth time, and named a Disney semifinalist.

Bonnie Jeanne Barte has entered firstyear studies at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM). WVSOM is an award-winning osteopathic medical college that has been recognized for its efforts in rural, family and primary care medicine.

Gina Marie Berthold received her M.D. May 5 from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. She planned to begin a residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at Bastate Medical Center, Springfield, Mass.

James F. Mitchell graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary-Charlotte in May and is now the Rev. Jim Mitchell. Ordained June 11 at Hickory Grove ARP Church, he will be pastor of Hickory Grove and Smyrna ARP Churches.

Luci Teague Vaughn graduated from Clemson University in August with a Master of Education degree in administration and supervision. She is teaching fifth grade at Cedar Grove Elementary School in Williamston.

A memorial service in Bowie Chapel Aug. 6 featured music performed by Jane Bauer, Lucy Anne McCluer, Cortlandt Koonts, and Doug Vaughan. Included in the program was Felix Bauer’s Sonata No. 14, Homage to F.J. Haydn. Speakers were Erskine Seminary Dean Emeritus Dr. Randall T. Ruble, Vice President for Development Lee Logan, Lucille Keller, Doug Vaughan and Boris Bauer.

Bauer taught at Erskine College from 1946-79 and founded the school’s Art Exhibition Center, serving as its director from 1957-79 and again in 1982-83. The exhibition center in the Bowie Arts Center is named in his honor, and he received an honorary doctorate at Erskine in 1996.

He wrote a textbook, The Appreciative Approach to Art, as well as a number of musical compositions. He designed the seal of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian denomination, and his sketch of the Due West ARP Church appears on its bulletin cover.

Active as a lecturer for adult and community education courses, Bauer was chairman of Erskine’s Bicentennial Committee and arranged a series of arts events that led to Erskine’s designation as an American Revolution Bicentennial Campus.

Bauer, a native of Vienna, Austria, studied under composers Alban Berg and Ernest Kanitz. In 1938 he fled from the Nazis to Switzerland. In 1940 he entered the Dominican Republic, where he met and married Martha Mondschein, a nurse from Cologne, Germany.

At the close of the war, he was interviewed by a writer who put him back in touch with Kanitz, who had taught at Erskine and recommended Bauer for a teaching position. The Bauers arrived in Due West in 1946.

“With his energetic commitment to students, and passion for his professional field, he was a role model for me as a teacher, a scholar, and a person,” said Dr. Bob Cunningham, a member of the Class of 1959.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; a son, Boris; a daughter, Linda; and two grandchildren, Colin and Kendra Bauer.

HHomecoming 2006 was a success for students, alumni, faculty and friends of Erskine College and Seminary. Ralph Patterson, director of annual giving and alumni affairs, said this year’s homecoming was “tremendous,” coupled with the Alumni Celebration and Memorial Hall Groundbreaking.

Students spent Friday night preparing floats during the annual Fleet-O-Rama and Saturday began with registration and coffee “On the Circle.”

Other activities included a 100th birthday open house for Carnegie Hall, an Alumni Board meeting, storytelling by the “Old Student Cabin” and a photo of former music program participants on the steps of Memorial Hall.

The parade followed the groundbreaking and at halftime of the women’s alumni basketball game, the Homecoming Court was introduced. Senior Katie Ellis of Fitzgerald, Ga., was crowned 2006 Homecoming queen.

First runner-up was senior Ashley Owens, second runner-up was junior Blair Christie and third runner-up was senior Joyce Lourenco.

Other class representatives were seniors Hannah Casey, Ellen Dawson and Katy Jackson; juniors Barron McElwee and Virginia Suarez; sophomores Angela Buckles, Jessica Skinner, and Ashley Waldmeyer; and freshmen Rebecca Nesbit, Kateryna Slyeptsova and Rebecca Tomlinson.

After the women’s basketball game, the men’s basketball team gained an 83-76 victory over Montreat in its season opener.

“The Boyfriend” was staged in Lesesne Auditorium and the day was capped by a reception and retirement dinner for Lee W. Logan, who is ending his tenure at Erskine College at the end of the year.

Dr. John Charles McGill, a  Erskine College graduate, recieved the Alumni Distinguished Service Award, the highest award given to an individual by the Erskine Alumni Association, Alumni Weekend 2006.
