Campus Center Addition at Cotting School /

Owner:
Cotting School is a private, non-profit school serving children ages 3-22 with special needs. The school provides an array of integrated services that foster academic achievement, skill development, and social-emotional maturity. Cotting School teamed with Erland and ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge to design and build a multi-purpose campus center addition, providing a venue for students to achieve their highest learning potential and level of independence. The 25,000sf, 2-story addition houses a full, regulation-sized gymnasium, bowling alley, rock-climbing wall, media and visual arts classrooms, strength and conditioning fitness center, school store/concession stand, offices, and multiple activity spaces. The facility was designed to meet the accessibility needs of the student population as well as ADA requirements.
The building’s exterior consists of brick masonry and corrugated metal panels. Architectural glazing was utilized to take advantage of the daylight shone in this area.
Due to the highly sensitive nature of the school population, Erland took great care in mitigating any disruption to the school’s ongoing operations. Maintaining a safe environment and accommodating the students’ needs were our top priorities.

Breakwater House at Lighthouse School /
Owner:
Lighthouse School selected Erland and TBA Architects to construct a new 23,000 sf school building, designated the Breakwater House, on their growing campus in Chelmsford. Lighthouse, a 56-year-old not-for-profit institution, provides educational, vocational, and therapeutic services and treatment to special needs students ages 3 to 22.
Breakwater House, built next to the school’s existing 50,000 sf facility on Wellman Ave, accommodates curriculum and educational services previously held in a leased space across town. The scope of work included an indoor play space, library, art room, nurse and teaching offices, and much-needed additional classrooms to continue promoting total life development. Erland also constructed a parking lot in addition to the covered spaces the new building provides.
This was Erland’s first project with Lighthouse School.

John & Diane Kim Autism Institute at the New England
Center for Children / Southborough, Massachusetts
Erland constructed The Autism Institute, a 3-story addition to the main building at the New England Center for Children, as a research and education center dedicated to transforming the lives of children with autism. NECC has both day and residential programs for students ages 3 - 22 years.
This project faced the challenges of construction on an occupied school campus compounded by the particularly vulnerable population that could be hypersensitive to noise and vibration. Communication with the client was key.
The Erland project team developed great respect for the mission of NECC and the importance of its work with the autistic population. This resulted in a successful proposal to our company’s Management Team to establish The Erland Foundation as a vehicle for raising funds to help with charitable causes that enhance quality of life for groups in the communities where we work. Our first event - an evening of bowling dubbed Strike Out Autism Night - raised money in excess of our highest expectations for NECC.
