As we reflect on the success of Agribition 2018 it is difficult to single out any one part of the show that was a standout highlight, not because of mediocrity but due to the balance and strength that each piece of the show presents. Some of the successes of the week were livestock sales which were again very strong, especially given the realities of fluctuating markets combined with a challenging growing and harvest seasons for many areas of Canada. Entertainment attendance was high and there was once again a strong contingent of international buyers who attended the show. There were new attractions added to the already strong entertainment profile, and the Agribition Pro Rodeo was once again a cornerstone attraction. These are successes that we can all be very proud of, and would be impossible to achieve without the dedication and support of our exhibitors, sponsors, staff, Board of Directors, and countless volunteers. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all who dedicated their time, energy, and talents in helping make the 48th edition of Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) a huge success! We are focused on planning for the 2019 show and discussing ways to enhance programming while we also work towards our 50th Anniversary in 2020. The CWA Annual General Meeting will be held on April 10 and we encourage all of you to attend and be part of the election of the CWA Board of Directors. If you are interested in running for the Board please feel free to contact myself or any CWA Director. This AGM will end my tenure as CWA President and I am very proud of what we have accomplished as an organization over the past two years. Although in its second year, the International Trade Centre still feels new and both CWA organizers and visitors are benefiting from upgraded facilities for livestock stalling, trade show vendors, and events. CWA continues to offer a variety of entertainment events and programming to attract a diverse crowd. Elite Three Canadian Cow Dog Futurity
ITC Beef Cattle Stalling
This free event showcased some of North America’s top cow dogs as both handler and dog maneuvered through a set course to determine the 2018 Futurity Champion!
Therapy Livestock Display Wild Blue Psychology was on site to teach visitors how they use cows, donkeys, potbellied pigs, ponies, rabbits and chickens in its therapy programs to treat anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns.

Photography Workshop Greg Johnson, the Tornado Hunter, offered free photography classes at his booth all week long to help those who are or who want to be active in sharing their story and advocacy of farming/food online through photography and social media.

After 24 years, the Texas Longhorns returned to CWA, bringing the total number of purebred beef breeds represented at the show to 12. The breed had a show and sale during CWA.

Brad Wall, Saskatchewan’s 14th Premier, and Frank McKenna, New Brunswick’s 27th Premier, former Canadian Ambassador to the United States and currently the Deputy Chairman of the Toronto-Dominion bank, participated in a panel discussion on food, fuel, and free trade. The event included a breakfast, moderated panel discussion, Q&A session from the floor, and an auction with all proceeds going to STARS.
CWA Mental Health Workshop presented by FCC Bridges Mental Health Services delivered a free two-hour mental health workshop that gave attendees the basic skills to identify warning signs around mental health and taught them strategies to become active in positive change.

CWA Agri-Preneurship Workshop presented by RBC Future Launch and Innovation Saskatchewan Young entrepreneurs, future entrepreneurs, and business students working in the ag sector looking for advice, mentorship and industry knowledge, attended a half-day seminar style workshop and networking event. Participants learned from industry experts, local entrepreneurs, participated in hands-on exercises, and had the opportunity to meet and network with like-minded individuals.

In case you couldn’t make it to the show...(cont’d) Rank Mini Ponies Added to the rodeo lineup was the Rank Mini Ponies. These ponies and young cowboys were seen each night at the rodeo and competed for cash, a shiny buckle and bragging rights!
Ruff Riders Sport Dog Demonstration The Ruff Riders flyball team demonstrated different dog sports such as flyball, agility, disc, and more in the Brandt Centre.

The Fleece and the Furious Theams of three wore bubble balls and attempted to herd sheep through an obstacle course and into a designated area. The team with the most sheep at the end of the round won.
Party on the Dirt After the final Agribition Pro Rodeo performance on Saturday night, guests wrapped up CWA 2018 with a cabaret party in the middle of the rodeo arena. The cabaret included music by DJ Longhorn, adult beverages, a mechanical bull, and space to dance the night away!

Staff Updates Ali Dederick
Joining the CWA permanent staff is Ali Dederick! Ali is the friendly face that will greet you at the office and the voice you will speak to when contacting CWA. Ali grew up in the city of Regina, and loves being involved in the community. She has taken part in many local events and programs within the city. Ali recently graduated high school from Sheldon-Williams Collegiate, and she is beyond excited to be a part of the Agribition team!
Agribition Pancakes in the District Kick Off to Agribition Pancake Breakfast
The fourth Annual Kick Off to Agribition presented by CN was held on November 3 at Local and Fresh, which is located in the old Weston Bakery building in the Regina Warehouse District. The event attracted over 600 attendees and gave them a little taste of Agribition with some Finning Cat equipment, a heifer calf, a horse, a mini donkey, and goats. Save on Foods provided pancakes and bacon while Van Houtte provided the coffee. A big thank you to those who came out to support the event as well as the volunteers and community partners who helped make the event a success!

2018 Scholarship Recipients

anadian Western Agribition offers three different scholarships to provide financial support and incentive to students who are connected to the show in order to pursue post-secondary and/or graduate education. Each scholarship can be used at any recognized post-secondary institution in
Canada or the United States. Since 1993 when the program began, $218,500 in scholarships have been awarded.
Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) Scholarship Recipients - $2,500 The CWA Scholarship is open to students with a history of involvement in CWA as exhibitors, volunteers, or competitors pursuing post-secondary education. Christin Dixon (Arcola, SK) – Christin grew up on a purebred Polled Hereford farm and has participated at CWA for eight years. She was active in school sports and was the class valedictorian. She is now attending the University of Regina and hopes to become a dentist and run a small herd of Polled Hereford cattle.
Kathryn Serhienko (Maymont, SK) – Katie is from a purebred Charolais operation and has participated at CWA for the last 15 years. She has her Agribusiness diploma from Lakeland College and is currently studying at the University of Saskatchewan to obtain her Agribusiness Degree. After school, she hopes to work in the agriculture lending field.
Travis Hunter (Didsbury, AB) – Travis grew up on a Red Angus farm and has participated at CWA for three years. He is currently attending Old’s College for Agricultural Management Marketing. After school, he plans to return to the farm and find work in the agriculture industry.
Barry Andrew Family Scholarship Recipient - $1,500 The Barry Andrew Family Scholarship is awarded to students with a history of involvement in CWA as well as pursuing post-secondary education in the field of Agriculture. Jill Sparrow (Vanscoy, SK) – Jill and her family run a mixed cattle and grain operation. She has participated in Youth Team Grooming at CWA for three years. Jill attends the University of Saskatchewan where she is working towards her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture majoring in agronomy and plans to obtain her master’s degree.
William M. Farley Memorial Scholarship Recipient - $1,500 This scholarship is open to students with a history of involvement in CWA with special recognition for those contributing to the show through volunteerism. Emma Nicholas (Milestone, SK) – Emma and her family raise purebred Hereford cattle and display bulls at CWA. She is an active volunteer and participates in sports, 4-H, coaching skating, and more. She is currently attending school in Lethbridge to obtain a degree in nursing. After school, she plans to be involved in rural health care and continue to help on her family farm.
