Not by Chance t’s no secret to any of us that Agribition is a big deal. No other event in Saskatchewan can claim fame to North America’s best beef show, the largest mix of trade show and agri-business, and Saskatchewan’s biggest rodeo. All this is wrapped up in a $37 million contribution to the provincial economy. None of this happens by chance. The show is full of pride, passion, and people. These people are the exhibitors, visitors and most importantly our volunteers.

It is with great pride, I represent the volunteer base of this organization. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the selfless effort of our volunteers and staff who work all year to produce the show. Strong Crowds Support 2013 Canadian Western Agribition he 2013 Canadian Western Agribition was a resounding success. This year, the show attracted 127,000 visitors, up more than 3 percent from last year’s attendance. According to Reed Andrew, President of Agribition the show’s success can be attributed to the enhancement of many different areas.

“Free admission on Monday combined with an expanded trade show, live stage entertainment and a family atmosphere contributed to the success of this year’s show.” The agriculture show’s world-class reputation drew over 800 international guests from more than 65 countries. “Demand for Canadian livestock genetics is very high around the world, and we saw evidence of that at this year’s show.” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Agribition. “We hosted buyers from many countries including Australia, China, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.” In addition to its reputation as the largest livestock show in Canada and the best beef show on the continent, Agribition is a major economic engine for the province and the city of Regina. “Canadian Western Agribition continues to be a huge contributor to the provincial and local economy. The net benefit of the show exceeds $37 million to the province, $20 million of which directly impacts Regina. This is something we can all be proud of.” said Seymour. Agribition’s Agri-Ed Program saw more than 6,550 kids from 180 classes throughout the 4-day program, a 9 percent increase over last year’s total. On the entertainment front, the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo, the largest semi-pro rodeo finals in Canada, hosted over 21,000 fans throughout the five nights.

Entertainment Additions Prove to be Popular hanks to the support from The Pump Roadhouse, we were able to introduce The Pump Roadhouse Stage to patrons this year. It featured a variety of local musicians and dance groups throughout the show.

We also featured two, new-to-Agribition events, Cowboy Mounted Shooting and Ride ‘em Cowboy Trainers Challenge. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting event was a loud one on Saturday where the participants demonstrated riding a pattern and shooting balloons off of horseback. The Ride ‘em Cowboy Trainers Challenge showcased Dale Clearwater and Cain Quam competing against each other in the art of horse whispering. The two dueled for 1 hour a day for 3 days to see who could best train an unbroke colt. Both colts were sold at the Ranch Horse Sale on Friday. They displayed their training techniques to thousands in attendance each day proving to be a popular event among equine enthusiasts.

2013 Jim Lewthwaite Award Recipient Jim Barber of Astbury, England – Jim has been an Agribition advocate for over 20 years. His first visit to Agribition was in 1989. Since then he has attended the show over 15 times, whether as a judge of the Belgian Blues, as a visitor, or bringing new recruits with him to experience Agribition. Over the years, Jim encouraged others from England, Ireland and Scotland to attend with him. Many of these buyers have made frequent visits back to the show in the years since. In the last ten years, Jim has become involved with the 4H judging program. He spends countless hours recruiting participants and reaching out to beef breed associations in the United Kingdom to sponsor their youth to attend Agribition. Jim continues to spread the word of Agribition. He has made a significant contribution towards the promotion of Agribition in the United Kingdom and is a very deserving award winner. 2013 Scholarship Recipients Canadian Western Agribition Scholarship Recipients Jeremy Andrew of Regina, SK – Jeremy is in his second year of Agriculture Business at the University of Saskatchewan. Jeremy has been involved with Agribition for thirteen years participating in many areas including 4H Commercial Cattle Judging and Youth Team Grooming. He has also been a volunteer at Agribition and has exhibited with his family. Megan Bergsveinson of Alameda, SK – Megan is in her second year of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan. Megan’s five year involvement with Agribition included competing in Junior Beef Extreme and Youth Team Grooming as well as exhibiting with Greyburn Angus Farms. Justin Kristjansson of Forrest, MB – Justin has completed an Animal Science degree and is now in his first year of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Justin has been involved with Agribition for three years participating in many beef shows. “Young people are the foundation of this industry. Agribition is proud to be able to give back to our youth.” said Reed Andrew, President of Agribition. Each scholarship is a $1,500 award that can be used at any recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or the United States. Since 1994 when the program began, $161,000 in scholarships have been presented. The Agribition scholarship fund receives contributions annually from private donations as well as proceeds from Agribition Auctions and the grounds crew.

Barry Andrew Family Scholarship Recipient Roberta Anderson of Bethune, SK – Roberta is in her final year of her Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. Roberta’s twelve year involvement with Agribition included many 4H activities and volunteering for Agribition. Roberta is also the daughter of past Agribition President, Gary Anderson. “Our family is very proud of this scholarship.” said Reed Andrew, son of the late Barry Andrew, and Agribition President. “My dad had two goals when he made this bequest: support youth in Agriculture, and encourage others to follow his lead by making similar donations to support Agribition and it’s greater community.” In April 2013, Agribition learned that long-time supporter Barry Andrew, who passed away last December, had left a generous bequest of $25,000 to the organization, which will be designated towards the Barry Andrew Family Scholarship. The scholarship is a $1,500 award that can be used at any recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or the United States. The Barry Andrew Family Scholarship is awarded to students that have participated in Agribition and are enrolled in an Agriculture related program. Canadian Western Agribition Gives Back $30,125 Raised at Canadian Western Agribition for STARS Air Ambulance n January 16th STARS Air Ambulance received a generous donation by three cooperative organizations: Canadian Western Agribition, the Canadian Bison Association and Bouchard Livestock. Extensive fund raising activity held at the 2013 CWA generated $30,125 for STARS.

This cooperative donation was the first of its kind in Agribition’s 43 year history. Agribition raised $4,925 for STARS through their annual Winners Circle Auctioneer Competition. Three auctioneers from across North America competed to be crowned Agribition’s Auctioneer Champion by selling charitable items with the proceeds going to STARS. The Canadian Bison Association raised $15,000 for STARS as part of its national convention held during Agribition. The bulk of the proceeds were generated through the sale of a life sized bison replica made from fibreglass. This item was generously purchased and then donated back to the association. “We selected STARS after hearing a story that hit close to home for us. Larissa Helbig, a bison producer and Canadian Bison Association member, was critically injured in 2012 and would not have survived if not for STARS getting her to the hospital so quickly.” said Terry Kremeniuk, Canadian Bison Association Executive Director. Bouchard Livestock worked closely with a group of Canadian beef producers to auction off a signed Shologan Saskatchewan Roughrider jersey during their annual Simmental Sale held at Agribition. The jersey raised $10,200 for STARS. “The cattle industry is a close knit community built on trust and relationships. STARS was instrumental in saving the life of one of our fellow cattlemen last year. We all hope we never need to use the services of STARS, but when we do, we trust they will be there for us.” said Brian Bouchard, owner of Bouchard Livestock. The money donated by these organizations will help provide rapid, highly specialized emergency care to those living, working and travelling in Saskatchewan. All funds raised in the province stays within Saskatchewan. “A donation of this nature, a collaborative gift, is a first for Canadian Western Agribition and it displays the strong support we have in our community,” said Rod Gantefoer, Executive Director, STARS Foundation, Saskatchewan. “We appreciate the ingenuity that led to this donation. Thanks to donors like these, STARS can continue to provide patients in Saskatchewan with hope.”

Canadian Western Agribition Donates $1,733 to Ronald McDonald House of Saskatchewan unds were raised through a Chuck for Charity contest as part Agribition’s annual 5 day rodeo. Rodeo fans purchased toy footballs with a chance to win prizes. Proceeds from the sale of the footballs were donated to Ronald McDonald House of Saskatchewan.

As Saskatchewan’s signature event, it’s important for Agribition to support community projects like the Ronald McDonald House. The House provides a place where families from every corner of Saskatchewan can get better together. “We were quite delighted to hear Canadian Western Agribition is making this donation. It’s a great event and many of the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House are the same families who attend Agribition.” said Tammy Forrester, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House of Saskatchewan.
