Canadian Western Agribition posts new records & sets sights on future growth CWA announced at their Annual General Meeting a profit from operations of $270,411 and a provincial economic impact of $73.6 milion annually. The 2017 show was a milestone year for the organization in many ways, including the opening of the International Trade Centre (ITC) and CWA’s $1 million contribution to the project. “The ITC not only offers the most modern livestock space in Canada, it symbolizes the future of CWA and its mission to be the most sought-after agriculture marketplace in the world,” said President, Bruce Holmquist. “It cannot be overstated how important the construction of the new building is to CWA and we again thank everyone who was involved in seeing the dream become a reality.” A number of records were set at the 2017 show including $2 million in purebred cattle sales; over 27,000 attendees at evening entertainment events; 365 international buyers from 86 different countries spending more on Canadian livestock than ever before; and CWA posted their highestever operating revenue of $4.6 million. The focus for the 2018 show will be hospitality and execution. “We will continue to evolve and meet the challenges ahead with the spirit and passion that has sustained us since our inception,” says Holmquist. “CWA is strong, stable and positioned for growth not only as Canada’s foremost agriculture marketplace, but also as a community organization contributing to the economy and spirit of Saskatchewan.

Canadian Western Agribition Volunteer Appreciation Night CWA Hall of Fame Frank Linthicum (1928-2017) was inducted into the CWA Hall of Fame at the CWA Volunteer Appreciation Night on April 5. Frank Linthicum was born in Rockglen, SK and became a full-time rancher in 1944 when he joined his father, Bill, and brother, Bob, in the running of a newly-acquired ranch, just south of Glentworth. Frank married Marjorie Anderson in 1960 and they made the Linthicum Ranch their home, raising their five children and developing a large and prosperous herd of mainly Hereford-bred cattle. Frank and Marjorie had entries in the Commercial Cattle Show at Agribition for the first 20 years of the show, winning many championships. In addition to his accomplishments as a cattle exhibitor, Frank also judged at many shows in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, including Agribition. Frank was a strong community supporter and volunteered many hours for the betterment of local projects and organizations, as well as for the greater livestock business in Saskatchewan and Western Canada. Frank and Marjorie received the Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honour Scroll in 1997, in recognition of their contributions to their community and to the livestock industry. In addition to many other livestock and rodeo industry contributions, Frank dedicated more than 40 years of volunteer service to CWA. He sat on the Commercial Cattle and Rodeo committees from their inceptions. He served both of those committees until 2010, when he accepted a 40-year CWA volunteer pin. At that time, he decided to step away from active committee work but continued to volunteer at both the Commercial Cattle Show and Sale and the Agribition Rodeo through 2012.

Outgoing Mission to Australia Canadian Western Agribition attends Beef Australia in May Chris Lane (CEO), Bruce Holmquist (President) and Michael Latimer (International Committee), traveled with a group of Saskatchewan producers to Rockhampton, Australia to attend Beef Australia 2018. Beef Australia occurs once every three years and is one of the premier livestock events in the world that showcases the entire Australian beef value chain. The event hosts more than 4,000 head of cattle from 30 different breeds. Part of CWA’s international marketing plan is recruiting ambassadors from other countries to market CWA in their home country. CWA Ambassadors for the Australia market, Glen Waldron and Kim Groner, committed to represent CWA for another year. Australia is an important established market for CWA because it includes numerous breeders who are familiar with Canadian genetics and can promote Canadian programs in their own show rings. Other outcomes successfully accomplished by CWA while attending Beef Australia include Beef Australia CEO committed to attend and speak at CWA in 2018, sale of Speckle Park genetics package to Australian business partner, committments from past buyers to attend CWA in 2018, and positive media coverage of CWA delegation in Australia. Overall, the delegation had a successful trip, gaining market research and intelligence through breeders and associations and the understanding that there is a greater opportunity to build a partnership with Beef Australia in the future.

Staff Updates Brady Kapovic leaves Canadian Western Agribition After three years as the Business Development Manager, Brady Kapovic moved on from CWA to pursue an opportunity at the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. During Brady’s time at CWA, he was able to enhance the sponsorship program and implement some new initiatives. Brady’s hard work and commitment to CWA will be missed but we wish him all the best in his new job.
