PORTFOLIO Erin Kugler

I aspire to become a successful designer with an intent on creating beautiful, thoughtful and, sustainable designs that focus on the experience of the user and how they inhabit and interact with these spaces.

I want to gain experience from many areas of design, thus creating a more well rounded approach to different design problems. Although I only have 1 year of professional experience I learned a lot and grew exponentially as a designer and am confident in the skills I have gained.

This is a compilation of key projects that I have worked on in my time at my previous firm as well as some from my undergrad. Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio and I hope you enjoy!

SUMMARY

I aim to gain experience from many different areas of design and explore opportunities that share my design vision and passions. My goal is to be able to design buildings and experiences in a sustainable way that connects nature to the built environment and the people that inhabit those spaces. I also wish to create meaningful spaces that all people can enjoy and that will improve their everyday lives. I am excited to bring my fresh perspective to the field and make a positive impact on the built environment.

Westerly Amenity

Westerly is an amenity building for a master planned community in Erie, Colorado. This building will act as an essential way point for the community, providing a space for exercise, relaxation and community connection. This amenity features a fitness studio, community room, outdoor fitness lawn, resort style pool, and a large front and back gathering porches. I got to work on this project all the way from the beginning of design development through construction documentation and a little bit into construction administration.

WESTERLYBOULEVARD

I was the main designer on this project and I got to work closely with my project manager to make this building come to life for our client. I started off by 3D modeling the building in Revit and from there I set up and drew the floor plans, sections, elevations and details. Although this building may seem simple in form there are a lot of intricate details that had to get worked through in the construction documentation phase of design.

While working on this project I was able to further hone in on my revit skills by translating the conceptual ideas into detailed architectural plans. I was able to work closely along side our consultants including interior designers, and engineers in order to make sure the integration of the project was as functional as possible. I played an integral part in creating and putting together the design packages for the different phases of design the project went through.

Ederra Outfitters

Ederra is an amenity building for a mountainous historic community in Cle Elum, Washington. This building is an essential stopping point for an adventurous community, providing a space for work, relaxation, restoration, and community connection. This amenity features a bike shop, bar and grab and go station, co working space, access to bike trails, and a large porch with a fireplace for outdoor connection. I got to work on this project all the way from the beginning of design development phase through the very beginning of construction documentation. This amenity is meant to support the active lifestyle of its residents and act as a welcoming way point for the rest of the community.

I was the main designer on this project and this was my first project at my previous firm I got to work on. I jumped in by 3D modeling the building from an existing model in sketchup and re modeling it in Revit. Using the firms drawing documentation preferences and following the project managers feedback, I developed a design documentation package for the client including floor plans, elevations, sections, simple concept renderings, and a few construction details. This was the clients first time doing a commercial project so I made sure to make the process as smooth and simple as possible helping to make decisions easier.

The Ederra Outfitters is the perfect mountain community destination, providing amenities for all your possible adventures or if you just want to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The clients vision for the building was to reflect the towns unique mining history and make it look like its always been there, so when deciding what materials to use we kept that in mind to give it a more rustic but still modern feel. This building has a lot of cool intricately designed details that were a fun challenge to model and document with the help of engineers as accurately as possible.

Saddleback Community

Saddleback Community is a marketing project I worked on for a potential master planned community and Amenity building in the Arizona Desert. Our firms vision for this community was to create spaces that foster community connection, connection to oneself and nature, and create opportunities to explore, discover, and experience the natural and built environment. While working alongside my project manager, I designed and put together this marketing package by gathering inspiration images as well as our company’s own previous work to help encapsulate our vision for this community.

ENVD Re-Design

In this project my group and I designed an adaptive reuse of the Environmental Design building on the CU Boulder campus. Our vision for the school was to increase collaboration among the students and have the building help inspire the students, increase natural light in the studio and collaboration spaces, and showcase the uniqueness of the program and the students work to the rest of the campus. We achieved this through the use of prefabricated modules, as well as a light well that goes through most of the building, we also kept the classic CU Boulder Tuscan vernacular to connect the building to the rest of campus.

Live Work: The Nest

The Nest is a live work project that sits in the heart of downtown Denver. This project aims to integrate nature into a dense built environment while also creating spaces to give a sense of community and help further serve its residents and make the city feel like a home. With retail frontage on the ground floor, and housing options and offices on the upper floors, this building helps to define and revitalize the community of downtown Denver.

Redefining Larimer

Cities are a lot like human beings, we intake goods and export waste and are adaptive to our surroundings, We should be taking care of our cities the same way we take care of our bodies. One of the most important organs in the body is the heart, and thats how my group and I viewed Larimer, as the heart of Denver. My group and I came up with a master plan for Larimer Square, and I solely focused on designing Writers Square. Writers Square is a plaza space that doesn’t provide a good line of site, good access to Larimer, has inadequate access to daylight, and overall is very uninviting. Since Larimer is the heart of Denver I wanted this space to help strengthen your heart and make you feel good and feel refreshed from the busy city life. Some of the ways I did this was by incorporating nature through raised plant beds and adding more trees, including a variety of different seating options for people, adding a business with healthier food options, and designing the site to promote movement.
