If all goes well and no new corona restrictions are put in place between now and October, we can say: finally we are able to return to the World Dairy Expo in Madison.

So many years in a row we have visited this great event and during all those years we could never even imagine that a virus could keep us away from this event for two years! But that became reality; now we sincerely hope it becomes reality to return to the Expo this year – and for many years to come.

As Holstein International we have had a well visited booth at the Expo for many years, and now that Tom and Sandy Morris gave us the possibility to take over the Cattle Connection magazine, of course we also would like to present this magazine proudly in our booth. So we are really looking forward to coming back to the Expo and welcoming everyone at our booth, which is located in the Coliseum: Main Concourse 22.

Although phone calls, messages and mails have proven to be very valuable over the past two years, nothing proves to be better than spontaneous, face-to-face talks and meetings. So therefore we would like to say: ‘Welcome to our booth and hope to see you soon!’

When you got up close to her, Lu was such an impressive individual, with moderate stature, tremendous width from head to tail, perfect feet & legs, and of course, that amazing udder.’ Lu-Tenant-Red is Lu’s natural son sired by Siemers Apples Army (High Octane x Mogul x Shottle x Apple). Lu is sired by Carousel Resurrect and traces back through September-Mandel-Sheik to Tora Triple Threat Lulu, fountainhead of the great Lulu family. Lu has 7 classified daughters, including Diamondback and Gold Chip daughters at EX-91, and a Jordy at VG-88. ‘Much like his mamma, Lu-Tenant exhibits a moderate-sized frame, lots of strength and width, and a great set of feet & legs,’ adds Martin. ‘His oldest daughters are already bred heifers, so he should have milking daughters next year.’ Lu-Tenant-Red has a aAa code of 432 516. by Doorman son Crush, Tatoo is out of the 93-point Gold Chip daughter of Vangoh Durham Treasure EX-96. ‘In my mind Treasure was one of the best uddered cows in breed history,’ continues Jorgensen. ‘When Tatoo became available and his dam Tokyo did so well in Madison and Reserve All-American we jumped at the opportunity.’ Tatoo does some things the breed really needs: He adds set to the leg and he adds slope to the rump. Now with almost 1,800 classified daughters, he is an exceptional udder sire (2.27) and is Nr.15 type with 3.00 PTAT, while he is equal 2nd in Canada at +14 conformation.

‘Last year was really the first year of his milking daughters at the World Dairy Expo and they were incredibly competitive: I’m sure we will see even more this year.’ Tatoo excels for mastitis resistance with 2.70 SCS, 108 Zoetis Mastitis, and 3.2 CDCB Mastitis. He is a modest production bull so should be protected for all production traits, and for short teat length. ‘He should be a perfect fit for Doc daughters and grand-daughters,’ adds Jorgensen.

If you are looking for show-time appeal then here is a King Doc son from a great transmitting family. Hardy, along with his full brothers Hancock, Handsome, Hanford and Harris, has an exceptional combination of type and production: The five brothers averaging 3.40 gPTAT and 2667 gTPI. They are out of a Monterey daughter backed by two Global Cow winners, Cookiecutter Mogul Hanker EX-94 and then Cookiecuter MOM Halo VG-88. ‘Hardy is an excellent production bull with elite type and udders,’ comments Jacob Richardson from CRV. ‘He’s a high stature bull with good depth and strength. He also has positive teat length and is A2A2.’ Hardy’s proof shows +3.32 gPTAT with +1246lb milk +.04%f +.01%p for a gTPI of 2650.

Expect tall, framey daughters (2.99 stature) with good body depth and angular, open rib (3.52 dairy form). His outstanding udder ratings feature exceptional rear udder attachments (3.80 high, 3.90 wide) together with strong udder cleft and close teat placement. He also has pleasing scores for foot angle (2.27) and locomotion (2.28). Areas to protect would be high pins and daughter fertility. Hardy semen is widely available in both conventional and sexed units.

Lovoo combines a high gTPI (2946) with over 2 points on type and nearly 2 points on udder composite. He is a Renegade son and so transmits high components with 1276lb milk +0.17%f +.08%p with a low 2.85 somatic cell score. Renegade is a former Outcross Sire of the Year winner whose other popular sons include Conway and Parfect. The dam of Lovoo is a Progenesis Fabulous daughter of Sandy-Valley Lhexi, a Helix backed by Kingboy and Supersire tracing to Pine-Tree Monica Planeta from the Rudy Missy family. ‘Lovoo boasts a huge score for feed efficiency at +261,’ points out Jennifer Dingbaum from AI Total. ‘He checks a lot of boxes for breeders and is a balanced, easy-to-use bull. He is a great cross on more frail cows. Lovoo is a rare bull that combines medium stature with strength and depth of rib. He will not help you with teat length but will not hurt you either.’ He has a very complete type trait profile featuring outstanding rear udders with 3.13 high and 3.06 wide, strong udder cleft and correct teat placement. Lovoo is available in both conventional and sex sorted units.

‘Unlimited has been a truly spectacular brood cow, the cow that put us on the map,’ exclaims Cade Stanek, who along with his parents Todd & Mary, runs Our-Favorite Holsteins near Eau Claire, an hour and a half east of the Twin Cities. ‘You really can’t plan for a cow like that: You need to have a lot of luck on your side as well. It’s not just the high type bulls that she and her daughters produced but the amount off change in our herd due to Unlimited is pheo phenomenal. n omenal.’ Unlimited is an Atwood daughter backed b acked by a 91 Shottle-93 Outside-92 Convincer aand nd a 92-Emory, and it was a genomic test that rrevealed evealed she was the Nr.1 type female in the breed b reed resulting in intense demand for her sons.

While singing the praises for Unlimited, Cade is realistic enough to realize that especially in this fast paced genomic era, generations of bulls come and go very quickly. ‘We are really excited

about the future because of a young heifer we bought from the Peak program,’ continues Cade. ‘Dad had noticed that they had some young bulls from her so we purchased Cedarwal Jitters when she was five months pregnant as a heifer. Before long, one of her sons that was released on the market was Peak Jagger (3.76 gPTAT and 2705 gTPI), so we knew then that we were onto something special. Then after she calved in she scored VG-88 as a 2-year-old and looks like she will develop into an EX cow so she has done everything right for us.’ Jitters is a King Doc daughter that traces through Doorsopen-Jacey to Ammon-Peachy Shauna, the mother of Supersire. ‘We’ve got 8-9 daughters from Jitters so far, including three that have over 4.00 gPTAT and some are over 1,200lb milk.

That’s the kind of type that fits our idea of what the breed needs for the future.’ One

SIMPLER LIFE The Stanek’s use both IVF and conventional flushing, though the flush program is not as aggressive as it has been in the past. ‘We’ve cut way back on numbers but we continue to keep a lot of heifers so as to have a sizable group of recipients,’ explains Cade. ‘We used to milk a total of 240 cows in three different tie-stall barns but we now only milk at one site.’ And the reasons for cutting back? ‘Labor and sanity,’ responds Cade succinctly. ‘With three tie-stall barns there were just too many things to go wrong, too many things to break down. I would spend all my time trying to organize labor to keep up with running three separate barns. By cutting back it’s a simpler life with a lot fewer

headaches. My parents have been farming for more than 40 years and are now trying to slow down. With just the one barn we now do most of the work ourselves. I’m still probably working just as hard but it’s a lot more straight forward without having to be constantly searching for labor and then keeping everyone organized.’

PARADOX The Our-Favorite prefix has now been part of the registered Holstein scene for over 40 years. Cade’s father Todd grew up with grade Holsteins. Todd explains: ‘My Dad didn’t pay much attention to genetics. However, there were some really good breeders in our area and when I visited them I was always inspired by the amount of pride they took in their cattle. That pride often carried over to the way they cared for their farms too and that really impressed me.’ Todd made a start into registered cattle and quite quickly decided that

he wanted to have more than just a nice herd of cows to work with. ‘I set some lofty goals that I wanted to make an impact on the breed. To really make a mark you need to produce some influential bulls, so I set my sights on breeding bulls with the kind of numbers that might get them into AI. For most of my early purchases I had to have cows with high index numbers to have a chance to produce bulls with competitive indexes. Consequently I got to be regarded as something of an index man.’ Todd’s quest to find cows with sufficient index to qualify them as bull mothers did meet with some success, with Our-Favorite sending a few young bulls to AI though nothing with long term impact. It was therefore something of a paradox when this “index” herd came up with the Nr.1 type female in the breed, and in the genomic era they were able to capitalize on that. High type indexing cows could now become potential bull dams too. The regular flow of young bulls from Unlimited into AI has enabled Our-Favorite to leave a mark on the breed.

REAL STORY ‘We are trying to find a way to keep our herd relevant and interesting from a genetic standpoint. Unlimited certainly made a huge impact and attracted some breed-wide attention for us,’ continues Cade. ‘Now it’s a case of trying to breed some elite females to make extra money on top of farming. With Jitters we made a really
