Priceless This year it is almost 20 years ago that a completely new sire debuted on the nr.1-position of the TPI ranking. His name: O-Bee Manfred Justice. No, he was no big type bull nor a big milk bull – unlike most of the other bulls in the TPI-rankings back then. But O-Man (as this bull was called) had something different. He was outstanding on all of the fitness traits: longevity, cell count, fertility and calving ease - exactly the traits that the breed was desperately looking for; in North America and worldwide. O-Man was the right bull at the right time. In those days, sires could be used freely between all AI companies and that’s why O-Man quickly became the most used sire of sons worldwide – everyone wanted to get these valuable fitness traits as soon as possible on board. The success was enormous. O-Man (who became a millionaire himself ), his sons, daughters and grandsons have done an incredible job on the fitness side of the breed. Thanks to O-Man’s genes, the breed became more balanced than ever for production, type and fitness. That’s why today O-Man has become one of the most influential sires in the history of the breed – behind only Elevation and Chief, who are technically unbeatable in this ranking. Yes: the arrival of O-Man along with the worldwide use of him as sire of sons has been of priceless value for the Holstein breed.
