Standing out When I start writing this editorial for the Cattle Connection, I just finished the Stantons Chief article for Holstein International. That was really a big job – and I loved doing it. From time to time we write special features on sires that really stand out in the global Holstein industry. Just to mention a few: Shottle, O-Man, Goldwyn, Mogul, Supersire… well, that list goes on. Now we have added Stantons Chief to that list. He is different than the bulls mentioned; they were all successful sires of sons, but Chief was hardly used as a sire of sons. However: being a sire of sons is not the only way to succeed in the dairy industry, and Chief proves that. Chief is popular because he does exactly what most dairymen appreciate: delivers thousands of balanced dairy cows in a splendid uniform way! There is hardly a bad one to find. All your money invested in raising young stock comes back in a healthy, balanced young cow that can start doing the job: almost every single one of them. Delta-Lambda has ranked among the best type bulls in the top-100 proven sires in the US (2.86 PTAT) and Canada (+14) for some time. ‘He’s a pure udder sire; consistent and uniform,’ comments Kevin Ziemba from ST. ‘With almost 4,000 classified daughters he is over 4.00 for rear udder height and width and gives amazing udder shape and texture yet the milking volume to make them extremely eye appealing.’ He is sired by Delta, while his Uno dam is backed by the production power of Snowman and Planet and then a Shottle daughter of Lila Z. ‘His pedigree works so well over most of the pure type sires as he carries no Bookem influence through Doorman or McCutchen. He provides show type and style with modern, moderate size yet maintains good levels of production and health: A true crossover bull that can do it all,’ adds Ziemba. Delta-Lambda has sold 220,000 doses of semen, 90% sexed units.

‘Engineer is a balanced bull that should fit any dairy,’ comments Jacob Richardson from CRV. ‘He is an average stature bull with good strength and depth, and he has excellent components with high NM and CM.’ Sired by former TPI leader Pursuit, Engineer is out of a Prophecy (Monterey-Supersire) daughter who traces back to the Sandy-Valley branch of the Rudy Missy family. His Delta grand-dam traces through Supersire-Planet-Shottle-Oman to Missy. Engineer’s proof shows +824lb of milk with +.25%f and +.11%p and he is an A2A2 bull. His type proof of 1.02 PTAT includes 0.60 udders featuring high, wide rear udders and longer than average teat length. Engineer also has a pleasing health trait profile excelling for SCS, herd-life and daughter fertility. ‘An area to protect is that rear teats are slightly closer than average,’ adds Richardson. ‘Semen is widely available in both conventional and sexed units.’

Two of the most famous Mogul daughters in the breed are the 95-point full sisters Cleavage and Cleo at Kings-Ransom in New York. Camaro is a grandson of Cleavage, with his EX King Doc mother completing 15 generations of VG or EX tracing back to the great Roxy EX-97. He is sired by AOT Highjump, a son of the noted brood cow Cookiecutter Habitan EX. ‘Camaro brings big-time fat combined with a deep pedigree,’ comments Dann Brady from Blondin Sires. ‘His Canadian proof gives him +701kg milk with +.76%f and +.32%p for 115kg fat or 104lb in the US. He combines that with +9 conformation or +2.81 PTAT. This comes together to give him 3505 gLPI or 2875 gTPI.’ Camaro has a well balanced type profile with no major weaknesses but could be protected for chest width and foot angle. Semen is widely available in both conventional and sexed.

A flawless type profile, solid production, and polled: Amaethon-P offers an impressive package and has one more intrigue – he’s based in Australia. Bred by Lightning-Ridge in Victoria, he is sired by the Australian bull Mirand-PP and is backed by a family very familiar to breeders in North America. ‘We were looking to add some Mirand-PP bloodlines to our program, and with Amaethon having a King Doc dam it made great sense,’ comments Jeff Ziegler from Select Sires. ‘Then you add Archrival, Doorman, Atwood Skychief and have a maternal base of Starbuck Ada, we knew the type characteristics would be extreme.’ Amaethon (2504 gTPI) is +948lb milk +.03%f -.02%p with 3.65 PTAT and 2.79 udders. His linear scores include 3.88 tall for stature and 3.19 adeep, while the outstanding udder scores feature 4.37 high and 4.76 wide for rear udders. Amaethon will add set to the leg with longer than average teat length.

Walnutlawn Sidekick

WALNUTLAWN SIDEKICK: 200HO10992 Semex: Abbott-McCutchen-Lavanguard Sidekick continues his reign as the Nr.1 progeny-proven bull for type in Canada at +16 with +13 udders. He is the oldest son of the superstar McCutchen daughter Walnutlawn McCutchen Summer EX-95, with the next dam being the great brood cow Lavanguard Sue, the dam of type specialist Walnutlawn Solomon. ‘Sidekick leaves a very consistent pattern, transmitting dairy strength at its best with normal stature,’ comments Julien Chabot from Semex. ‘Loin strength and overall rump structure correctness stand out. Daughters have very snug udders with particularly strong fore attachments. He would be best used on angular, milky cows needing strength,’ adds Chabot. Sidekick is a high component bull and really stamps his pattern on his daughters. As 2-year-olds they can appear a little immature in the udder and display strong frames while lacking a touch of silkiness, just the kind that should develop as they mature. Sidekick semen is widely available.

AI Total: Total Package of Bulls with Diverse Breeding Strengths

The arrival of the high ranking daughter-proven bull Aurora Mitchell put the spotlights on his owner AI Total. Although a relatively new name in the industry, AI Total is now having quite an impact. Here we bring you the background details of this interesting bull stud program.

MS Genetics has been a fixture on the North American Holstein scene for many years. The company was origioriginally started by Bob Heilman and operated as a brokerage company for embryos and bulls. AMS was then owned for a time by Corey Wolf and then in January 2010 was purpurchased by Genetics Consolidated from the Netherlands. Genetics Consolidated owns the European genetics company Diamond Genetics. It was in 2010 that Jan de Vries of Genetics Consolidated and Tjalke Albada of Albada A lbada Beheer teamed up to establish AI Total T otal with a clear goal of having a total packpackaage ge of bulls with diverse breeding strengths aavailable vailable to farmers worldwide. In 2020 after AII Total had become well established, GenetA Genetics Consolidated bought out the shares from Albada and became sole owner of AI Total.

EXPANDING Two very popular bulls in the AI Total lineup are the full brothers Siemers Have-It-All and Happen. Sired by Sandy-Valley Excalibur (King Royal-Silver), they are out of Siemers Doc Hanker EX-94, backed by a Monterey and then Cookiecutter Mogul Hanker EX-94, a winner of Holstein International’s Global Cow competition. Their proofs of 2789 gTPI and 2675 gTPI feature solid production numbers with outstanding type, being 3.58 PTAT and 3.82 PTAT respectively. A bull commanding a lot of attention recently is Sandy-Valley Moon (Marius-Helix-Kingboy) who has a gTPI of 2836 and is an outstanding production sire with 1563 of milk +.06%f and +.05%p. Also selling a lot of semen in certain markets is the very efficient Jook Einstein Quality (Einstein-Ragen-Montross) who is

Steve Mower is the general manager of AMS and AI Total in the US, based at Hudson in western Wisconsin, about 30 minutes from the Minneapolis airport. With Genetics Consolidated owning both AMS and AI Total it was logical that the two would operate together in North America. ‘We started selling semen as AI Total here in the US in 2014. We maintain a diverse range of bulls suited to different market demands, and we work strictly through independent distributors,’ comments Mower. He goes on to explain that market emphasis in the mid-west requires a balanced proof with a solid gTPI, while in California producers usually look to the NM when choosing sires. The flagship bull of the AI Total lineup has been Aurora Mitchell. ‘Everyone who is milking a Mitchell daughter just loves the bull,’ comments Steve. Aurora Mitchell (Wet Tatum Mitchell-Bombero-Mayfield) has 184 milking daughters in his well-balanced proof with figures of 2805 TPI including 924 milk, +.12%f +.05%p with 2.58 type and 1.75 udders. Daughters have wide rumps with outstanding rear udders, and are correct for leg set and teat length.

semen as well as semen from a few Angus bulls. ‘We work with independent breeders on those,’ comments Steve. ‘There is also a deal of cross-breeding in some regions and for that we carry Fleckvieh bulls. These bulls are bred in the US though of course carry European bloodlines. The cross-breeding demand is pretty stable: Once producers move to cross-breeding they seem to stay with it. The Fleckvieh bring in strength and they are docile cattle.’

SEXED SEMEN

A lot of the bulls for the AI Total program and for other studs are sourced via AMS which operates as a brokerage for bulls and embryos. ‘Mitchell, EQ, Caralbay and Haniko were all purchased for their respective studs by AMS,’ Steve points out. ‘That aspect of the business has changed some over the years. We used to be on the road a lot more in the past but Covid has put a damper on that. Our work now involves a lot of co-ordination and using phone and email for staying in touch with our contacts,’ explains Mower. ‘Typically we have clients we work with who tell us what they are looking for and then we find it, while there are others who just send us certain criteria and we look for animals that meet those specs. Then there are breeders who send us their embryo inventory on a regular basis to work from. The market continues to be pretty stable, with most of our clients being in the EU or Asian countries. And the market has changed in the sense that there is now more demand for type rather than just a nice pedigree. The European market is getting to be a mature market where they are just looking for high-end genetics. It’s now type or high genomics with not much in between.’

The AI Total bulls are housed at different locations around the world. In North America, most are at ST in Canada with some at ST in the US. Cogent in the UK houses some of the European bulls, while others are at Inseme in Italy. ‘Our bulls are usually available in both conventional and sexed semen. I think it would probably be around 40% of our semen sales that come from sexed semen,’ adds Mower. The continued demand for sexed semen has given rise to the beefon-dairy aspect of the industry, and to cater to that AI Total now markets Wagyu beef

AI Total aims to supply breeders worldwide with a wide range of bulls with diverse breeding strengths. A key to its success is that it involves local people who have a passion for breeding elite cattle and knowledge of the local industry. It’s a case of thinking global but acting local. Although AI Total is a relatively new name in the industry, with a flagship bull such as Mitchell and many high caliber young bulls in the pipeline, it is now a well established brand. l

Interest in polled bulls is really gaining momentum. Vogue A2P2-PP from Validity Sires is the highest demand polled bull at present, providing great type, A2A2 and the aAa code 315246.

1929 of milk +.01%f +.00%p and will slightly reduce size and frame. ‘We find demand is still very strong for genomic bulls though a high-ranking proven bull like Mitchell continues to attract a lot of attention,’ comments Steve. ‘A2A2 has become more important in many of our markets, and certainly interest in polled bulls is really picking up now. And we find there is a fair amount of loyalty from those wanting the aAa bulls, especially for the hard-to-get codes. Our bull Prada has a code of 561 which makes him extremely popular in certain markets. The rare codes can give a real boost to a bull’s popularity. Another bull Sandy-Valley EQ has a code of 516 which makes him sell well, and Vogue CFP-PP is 216 which boosts his sales.’ AI Total also markets semen for a number of different companies, including Ascol from Spain, Intermizoo from Italy and SPS from Slova-

kia. They also carry some bulls from Validity Sires in Canada, with the bull Vogue A2P2-PP being one of the most popular. ‘We continue to expand and are always looking for distributors,’ adds Mower.
