Hans Johnson Benefit

Hans and Catherine Johnson recently married on August 9th. They co-manage Horse-Creek Holsteins, a 325-cow dairy in Star Prairie, Wisconsin, with Hans’ parents, Ted & Gretchen Johnson.

Hans’ Healing Journey Hans Johnson of Osceola, WI received news last summer that no one expects to hear at such a young age of 23. Hans was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, Hans has had two surgeries and many rounds of chemotherapy. He is currently undergoing stem cell treatments at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Our families are up to 13 generations deep with over 68 years of proven breeding behind them.

In fact, our current herd AVERAGES 8 generations of EX or VG dams. We believe that kind of cow power is more reliable than any genomic measure!

The Clemson University Dairy Farm is in the process of building new facilities at the dairy. To get this accomplished in the best way, they will have to reduce the herd size by half to be able to safely handle cows and to maintain their AAALAC accreditation during construction as old is torn down for new. All Holstein milking cows, dry cows, and bred heifers calving through March will be sold in pairs: buyer picks the one they want and the other animal stays. They hope to be in the facility by late spring of 2015 with the intentions to increase herd size back to around 150 milking cows. Also, we will be taking consignments from dairies across the Southeast to have something for everyone.

A little goes a long way for 15-to-1 ROI

1. Hold nozzle 4 to 6 inches away.

2. Separate quarter from leg.

3. Move bottle in mostly downward sweeping motion while pulling nozzle trigger.

4. Apply 3 to 5 pulls per quarter, depending on udder size. For fresh animals, spray all quarters.

Getting animals off to a good start on lactation helps set the stage for profitability. These dairy producers make Udder Comfort™ a big part of the quality management protocols for fresh cows and prefresh heifers.

“Cost varies a bit, but one 500-ml bottle of spray should cover the pre- and post-calving use on 4 head. We figured a 15-to-1 return on investment at a minimum. We bank on an 8% milk increase in 2-year-olds from improved peak milk,” says Jan Sas on the protocol he detailed for a 1000-cow Newfoundland dairy.

“We sprayed first-calf heifers daily with 3 to 4 evenly-distributed vertical sprays on every quarter, starting 3 to 4 days pre-calving; for multi-lactation cows, 5 to 6 days prefresh. Continue 2x/day for 3 days post-calving.”

Barry Hostetter of Valley River Holsteins, Annville, Pa. has done this 4 years with his 65-cow herd, and has stayed with Udder Comfort for 10 years. He puts it on prefresh heifers 1x/day 10 days pre-calving. “We were able to reduce SCC to 85,000,” he reports.

Hector Jiminez of R&J Dairy, Dublin, Tex., uses it faithfully for fresh animals too.

“We have less need for intramammary treatments because overall udder condition is so improved,” he says.

The 850-cow herd has an 75-lb herd average and SCC of 190,000.

At Mesa Farms, Milford, Wis., “All fresh cows get udders sprayed after the a.m. and p.m. milkings for the first 3 days after calving. If they bag up big before calving, we spray prefresh udders in the maternity pen. This routine has decreased our need for other measures,” says Patrick Mess. The 100-cow dairy has a 93 lbs/cow/day herd average and SCC of 175,000.
