location Base Info 18,000 SQF Address: 3120 Lakeshore Blvd West Etobicoke ON, M8V 1L3 New Toronto Neighborhood : commercial residential zone.

Site is not listed as a historical site: the building was pruchased by Humber College in 2009 and was previosly a car dealership There are several public and private schools in this area.

The close proximity of Humber College makes this a safe area for children.

Transportation Can be accessed via the Toroto Transit Commission (TTC) 501 streetcar From LongBranch Loop 301 Streetcar From Longbranch Loop 44 and 944 bus route both from Kipling Station.

Climate + Vegitation The existing front entrance faces west and receives sunset views. the new entrance is orented East and will receive sunrise views.

Accross from the site is Colonel Samual Smith Park

Building Fabric Exterior Fabric The 2 storey structure is concrete sheets with a steel façade fixed to the building face on the west and south sides near Lakeshore Blvd W. The exterior of the building is composed of this large steel structure, wire fencing for greenery to grow on, large concrete slabs, pebbledash Finish is used on the lower level.

Most exterior fenestration is unconvered and is not operable to allow ventilation.

The previous entrances on the south side of the building has been made inaccessible by the steel frame façade applied overtop of it.

At both main parking lots the building number can be located in large print.

There are streetposts found in both parking lots but not at the entrance of the building.

Interior Fabric The building is currently an educational facility for Humber colleges Bachelor of Social Science Criminal Justice program.

The two storey building has 5 traditional classrooms, 1 large simulation room, 1 lab, 3 storage closets, 2 sub divided meeting rooms, and 2 accessible barrier free washrooms.

Overall the interior is in good condition with the exception of water damage in one of the classrooms.

Lighing There is no natural light penetrating the entire space due to the exterior steel screen blocking light. The former dealership showroom has been converted into a series of classrooms further hindering the penetration of natural light.

Existing fenestration will be treated and new windows will be added where possible.

The ceiling mounted fluorescent lighting throughout the space will be replaced with energy efficient fixtures.

Finishes The carpeting that runs in the investigation rooms and some classrooms will be removed.

The tiered levels of the level halls and classrooms will be demolished to achieve an even level throughout the entire space

Hematology Hematology is the study of blood in health. It includes problems with blood componants and the protiens involved in bleeding and clotting.

At SickKids, The focus of care is family-centerd. The goal of the Heamatology and Oncology program is to provide timely, state-ofthe-art care to children with cancer and serious blood disorders as near to home as possible. A network of satellite centers across Ontartio provides selected aspects of care for this large population of children nearer to thier homes. Expert teams provide leasership with respect to diagnosis and recommendation of appropriate management plans. - sickkids.ca/heamatologyOncology

Leukemia: Leukaemia is a type of cancer found in the blood and bone marrow and is caused by the rapid reproduction of abnormal white blood cells.These cells are not able to fight infections and prevent the production of red blood cells and platelets in the bone marrow.

Lymphoma: Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph nodes. It begins in the infection fighting cells of the immune system called lymphocytes.

Sick kids is a teaching hospital- There is opportunity for medical students to gain field experience by working at the side of professional hematologists and interacting with real patients and families.

Preventative wellness- chronic illnesses require close monitoring during early childhood and adolecence.

Hemophilia 20%

Hemophilia: Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. People with hemophilia bleed for a longer amount of time. A hemophilic's life is in danger when internal bleeding occurs.

Sarcoma: Sarcoma is a tumour of connective tissue and is one of the common malignancies among children. It often spreads to other tissues in the body making it a serious chronic illness that requires constant medical attention and close monitoring.

Leukemia/Lymphoma 20%

Sickle Cell Disease: This disease affects individuals from birth and causes red blood cells to be misshapen. In sickle cell disease, the haemoglobin is abnormal causing the red blood cell to take a rigid C or sickle shape. Sickle cells can get stuck in blood vessels and cause severe pain, and blockage of blood flow to specific organs and joints.

Thalassemia 8%

Thalassemia: Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body creates abnormal hemalobin.

Hematologists + Medical Students The needs of healthcare professionals have been taken into consideraton with the design of this facility. Areas of the facility were doctors and staff operate are kept separated from patient areas.

Children This facility will serve the needs of a wide age range of patients. It needs to socially support the various dempands of everyone.

A vibrant and welcoming evironment encourages healing and preventative wellness.

Family Family is at the center of this design. The space is a comfortable and uplifting space for all. It accomodates the needs of siblings, gaurdians and friends to ensure a truely supportive space.

Research-based design

theories of supportive design Control A sense of control can be achieved by giving patients the option to control their physical surroundings, which means providing access to visual privacy, controllable televisions in patient rooms, access to outdoor spaces and natural scenery, and control of room temperature. For staff an area to escape their work improves working conditions.

From practice-centered design Social Support Social support can be strategically incorporated into a design by providing convenient and comfortable accommodations for multiple family members, comfortable waiting areas with moveable furniture to encourage conversations where ill patients can encourage one another.

Positive Distractions The most effective positive distractions are (1) happy laughing or caring faces; (2) animals and; (3) nature elements such as trees, plants and water.

These tables are created using either resin or epoxy- a material that pours into the mold as a liquid and hardens to fill the void space with vibrant colour. I drew inspiration from these pieces of furniture becasue they are a three dimensional physical element that functions in the same way as a two dimensional surface.

It was my intention to create an environment where this look is achieved to create a playful environment while respecting the accessiblility of the space ny being two dimensional.

playscapes- the art gallary of ontario The spiral staricase of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) was designed by Gehry. It presents a strong structural form that is both a work of art and has a function. It is interacted with on a daily basis as part of the spatial experience.Â

The interaction of this structure is encouraged by its curvulinear form.

Its proportions are justified by its placement in the space and the void or emtpy volume of space surrounding the massive structure.

Both the illumniation underneath the gaurdrail, and the grain direction in the wood material help to emphasise the seamless curve of the stair. curvillinear sketches of serpenitne ramp

playscapes- noguchi Noguchi's mantra slide was one of the main sculptural inspirations of the space. This sketch model attempts to explore interactive shape and form. It is a solid form of just one piece that encourages play while simultaneously mainting artistic sophisitcation.

fluidity- Gaudi & simcoe wave deck Gaudi's architectural works in the city of Barcelona are significant to this study for their layered characteristics. Both Casa Mila and Casa Battlo have a facade composed of organic layers that make for an eye catching towered form.

These facedes use lines to make themselves standout from the surrounding architecture.

concept statement The concept of the space is fluidity. My intent is to create a space that flows with the process of visiting a clinic. I focused my concept into the organization of the space from the moment of entry, through the waiting process to the scheduling of future appointments. Physically, I designed the space to to mimic the feel of waterflowing and natural movement, using soft edges and a neutral toned colour palette.

Why From my research, the quality of care provided in a clinical environment can be promoted by characteristics of supportive design.

A well designed space has the ability to enhance the medical endeavors of pediatric haematologists.

Historically a car dealership Bought and renovated by Humber College in 2009 Residential area Near TTC bus stops Colonel Samuel Smith Park Nearby College campus security.

What I propose that the Humber Center for justice leadership be transformed into a facility for outpatient Haematology services.

The idea is for the facility to be a comfortable and welcoming environment for families and older kids to be treated with quality care off of the Sick Kids Hospital campus.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES STRATEGY DESCRIPTIONS The construction and design process of Sick Kids Hematology Clinic at 3120 Lakeshore Blvd. W. will employ a series of sustainable measures to ensure the health, safety and overall wellbeing of the occupants, neighbourhood and site. The below outlines key sustainability considerations that directly relate to the LEED Building Green Building Rating System and the WELL Building Rating System.

LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION •

Access to quality transit- both functional entrances to the building are within a 400-meter walking distance to the Toronto transit commission ( TTC) planned bus route #44, #145 and #944, and to the TTC streetcar route numbers 501,508 and 301.

Bicycle Facilitieso Long term bicycle storage will be provided for 2.5% of the building occupants. o Bicycle storage will be located within 180 metres of the functional entrance.

Green Vehicles- Electrical vehicle supply equipment will account for 2% of all parking spaces on site.

WATER EFFICIENCY • •

Outdoor water use reduction- No irrigation system is required on the landscape of the site.

Indoor water use reductiono Appliance and process water use-commercial clothes washers shall be of ENERGY STAR performance level, no once through cooling with potable water for any equipment or appliances that reject heat will be used. o Toilets shall consume 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or less, urinals shall consume 1gpf or less, public lavatory faucets shall consume a maximum of 0.5 gallons per minute at 60 pounds per square inch (psi) and private lavatory faucets shall consume at maximum 2.2 gsm at 80 psi. o All the fixtures listed above shall be WaterSense labelled. o The sterilization lab shall be equipped with a reverse osmosis water purifier with at least 75% recovery.

Optimize Energy Performance- Sick Kids hematology clinic shall improve energy performance by 28%. Additionally, HVAC-related strategies, load reduction and passive measures will be measured and analysed. Efficiency measures will be analysed during the design process and contribute to design decision making.

Renewable Energy Production- The project shall use tenant renewable energy systems to offset the projects energy costs of up to 5%.

Green Power and Carbon Offsets- this facility shall hold a contract with qualified sources that specify 100% of this building's power comes from green power.

Storage and Collection of Recyclables- Dedicated receptacles are provided and accessible to waste haulers and building occupants.

Construction and Demolition waste Management Planning- a construction and demolition waste management plan has been developed and implemented for this project.

Long-Term Commitment- the occupant will remain in this location for at least 10 years.

Interiors Life-Cycle Impact Reductiono Interior Reuse- The existing sheet metal covering the façade of the building shall be reused on the interior in various ways including as privacy screens, wall coverings and storage compartment materials. o Design for Flexibility- At least 50% of nonstuctural materials shall be reusable or recyclable as defined by the Federal Trade Commission Guide for Use of Environmental Marketing Claims,260.12. Flexible power distribution systems shall be implemented for at least 50% of the project floor area. A flexible lighting control system with plug and play components with plug and play components will account for 50% of the lighting load.

Building Product Disclosure and Optimization-Sourcing of Raw Materials: Leadership Extraction Practices- At least 75% of flooring specified in this project is Forbo’s Marmoleom flooring which is a bio based material.

Construction Indoor Air Quality Management Plan- An indoor air quality plan shall be developed and implemented for the construction and preoccupancy phases of the building.

Thermal comfort- Thermal comfort Control- individual thermal comfort controls are provided for at least 50% individual occupant spaces and group thermal controls for all shared, multi-occupant spaces.

Interior Lightingo Lighting control- 90% of individual lighting spaces shall have personal lighting controls to best suit the users various tasks. o Lighting quality- light fixtures shall have a luminance of less than 2,500 cd/m2 between 45 and 90 degrees nadir. Light sources with a cri of 80 or higher shall be used. Less than 25% of the project uses direct only overhead lighting. For at least 90% of the floor area 85% of ceilings, 60% of walls and 25% of floors meet or exceed area weighted average surface reflectance standards.

Daylight-75% of the regularly occupied floor area shall receive either direct sunlight or diffused sky light on clear sky conditions.

Quality Views- A direct line of site to the outdoors is provided via vision glazing for at least 75% of regularly occupied floor area with no obstructions.

Additionally, multiple lines of sig tot flora fauna, sky, movement and objects over 25 feet away are provided.

Acoustic Performanceo HVAC Background Noise- HVAC noise shall be a maximum STCc rating of 50 in hallways and corridors, and 45 in all other areas.

GALVINS SIX PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY 1. SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: the space should be able to support a variety of social needs. There are social zones incorporated in and around the medical and office zones in the floorplan. 1) The infusion clinic has a games room where patients receiving treatment can socialize and game together. 2) The café, reception and Waiting area at the plans entrance is centrally located in the building for easy access from any point.3) The staff room is located centrally and apart from the public and patient realm of the building, thus enhancing the staffs work environment. And 4) there are seating areas located in corridors and halls for alternative and casual social interactions.

FUNCTIONAL SUSTAINABILITY: Built-in flexibility- The open concept of the Café and reception areas allow them to be transformed for community use outside of clinic hours for community education sessions on blood disorders and pediatric care. It can also be used for after school activities by the New Toronto neighbourhood community.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: The act of Climate Resilience- The location of the new clinic was chosen specifically for its location. 3120 Lakeshore Blvd.

West is along multiple Toronto Transit Commision routes that operate on a daily basis including streetcars and buses that have night routes. Access to public transit allows regular occupants such as staff to refrain from driving cars and emmiting harmful gases into the atmosphere.

Additionally, three faces of the building have existing large windows that allow plenty of natural light to penetrate the interior space. The south façade in particular has views to Colonel Samuel Smith Park.

Finally the new design specifies materials and finishes that contribute to green building standards. They have a low toxicity, zero VOC off-gassing and are of at least 30% recycled material content.

4. FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: The new design proposes to enhance financial sustainability by minimizing costs in building mechanics. According to the OBC the west south and east building faces are permitted to have full height glazing. Which would significantly enhance the aesthetic of the building and increase the amount of light coming in to the space. The decision to maintain the existing brick façade was made to maximize the insulation factor of the building shell. Glazing has very low insulation qualities and thus causes for more energy being used to heat and cool the building and regulate the internal temperature. The brick building façade will help to keep energy costs low.

5. POLITICAL SUSTAINABILITY: There must be an active need for spaces such as this to continue to exist. Sick Kids is a teaching hospital. There fore there needs to be a safe space where medical students can work alongside professionals to gain real world experience. This clinic is designed as an environment where learning is encouraged. Its comfortable aesthetic removes nervous and serios pressures from the space and encourages friendly supportive interactions.

6. AESTHETIC SUSTAINABILITY: A design that continues to serve- The new clinic has been designed with biophilia and family values in mind. This is a space that is intended to be occupied by a demographic of varying ages. The neutral tones and cool blue colors promote a calm nurturing environment suitable for

Erin Fleming INTD4500- Winter 2020 healthcare. The blues are accompanied by bright orange to give the space energy that reflects the cheerful characteristics of its main users, children.

ACOUSTIC CONSIDERATIONS

The acoustical qualities of a space contribute to the patients comfort and ability to heal. It is imperative that designers consider the acoustical qualities of the materials and finishes selected in a project. Sound is defined as a vibration that passes through space in the form of a wave, and passes through a solid liquid or gas. The building code specifies a certain sound transmission class (STC) to certain partition types to protect building users from experiencing sound pollution. The STC rating is a number used to rate the transmission loss of various building materials. The higher the STC the better the barrier is at stopping sound from passing through it.

Sound absorption is a common tool interior designers use to control the acoustical qualities of an interior space. The absorption of a material is the ratio of the sound intensity absorbed by the material to the initial intensity impacting the material. In general materials with a low coefficient are reflective of sound and do not absorb much, hardwood and porcelain tile for example. Materials like textiles, carpet and felt have much higher coefficient and thus absorb more sound in the environment.

KEY AREA: CAFÉ ATRIUM The café is a spacious and social area withing the clinic and has a particularly large spatial volume. The acoustics in this area are especially in need of control because it is adjacent to the infusion clinic which accommodates long term patient treatments.
