alem-Keizer school district hired a new leader this past July 1, Christy Perry the new superintendent “I love my job,” superintendent Christy Perry said during an interview at South. Perry is very devoted and enjoys her job to the fullest.

Perry, describes her job as her being a head coach of a big football program. The head coach sets the vision and the expectations, while the others make sure they are doing their jobs correctly with her as a guide.

Coming from a small district to a big district is quite a

change for Perry but she seems to be handling it very well. “I think that running a small district first helps me be a better leader for a big district because I understand district operations top to bottom. I know all the federal programs because it’s a small district. I know how to ask the questions.”

Between work and spending time with her dog, Perry enjoys going to the lake where she was raised and going water skiing! She has two children,who are both currently attending college. Her husband owns a business in Dallas where they currently live.

outh Salem High School’s science departments, including physics, biology, and chemistry went

on a field trip to Silver Creek Falls.

The goal of the trip was to use science in order to tell whether or not the water in a swim-

ming hole at the park was considered healthy. The students did this by using different tools and working together in groups.

Breast Cancer Awareness SARAH AUDLEY / Feature Editor

O

ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on October 11th and 12th, Scott’s Cycle on Commercial St in SE Salem is holding a Breast Cancer Awareness Bike Ride.

“I would so do it!” said Eleanor Vanden Busch ‘16, “My dad and I love going on bike rides and this is for a great cause.”

The race will take place from 10am to 1pm. You can run as an individual, or form or join a team. If you unable to participate but would still like to support Breast Cancer Research, you may make a donation of

any amount of money through Scott’s Cycle. To participate in the race, it will cost $40.00 for general registration, plus a $3.19 fee. Scott’s Cycle is also offering a Family Registration which will cost $30 per person for a family of four, plus a $2.64 fee.

In case you are unable to participate in the event, your registration fee will automatically be deemed a donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“We are raising almost $3 million this Fall with our two Race for the Cure events (Portland and Salem),” said Julie Dunn, a

Susan G. Komen Oregon representative, “Over 75 percent of these funds stay here locally to fund early detection, survivor support, research and advocacy.”

Komen Oregon is the Breast Cancer Awareness movement in SW Washington and Oregon, providing $2.5 billion in breast cancer research and support to women diagnosed in over 30 countries worldwide.

SAT Tips and Tricks

ike winter, the dreaded SAT and PSAT/NMSQT standardized tests are coming for students. The SAT is a standardized test used by college admission boards. The PSAT/NMSQT is a preliminary test to give students a preview for the subjects/information used on the test and prepare

them for testing environment. The SAT tests are held on Saturday, October 11 and on Wednesday, November 8 at West Salem High School or Houck Middle School. The PSAT/NMSQT test will be given during school on Wednesday, October 15, with a fee of $14.

Tips

• DON’T BE LATE. They will not admit late students into the testing center.

• Bring a spare calculator. If a calculator breaks while testing,

one would be alone and have to complete the test without one.

Make sure your calculator is also approved for the SAT!

• BRING IDENTIFICATION. This is mandatory, and students will not be admitted without it. Qualifying identification is a valid student i.d. card issued from the school you currently attend, a government issued driver’s license, and/or a passport.

• If one hasn’t already assumed, cell phones are prohibited.

Food Trucks

T

he food truck scene, although a fairly small one is quickly expanding due to some revising of the food code in July. These changes include the abolishment of the two-hour time limit the extension of licenses required from the original six months to twelve months.

According to Richard Foote, administration for the official Food Truck Salem website, a couple new trucks coming to Salem are ‘The Island Girls Lunchbox’; a former Wednesday Market vendor that sells gourmet food from Guam. Also coming soon is a truck specializing in lunch and comfort food, going by the name of ‘The Laughing Lunchbox.’ ‘The Rice Plate’ also transitioned from being a farmers market vendor to now selling their Asian cuisine out of a trailer.

his year, South Salem High School has three National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists in attendance.

Being a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist means that Alexandra Roseborough ‘15, Micah Lorenz ‘15, and Emma Bidwell ‘15, representing the Class of 2015, were among the 50,000 highest scores on the PSAT, and were some of the highest scorers in the state of Oregon.

When asked how they were informed of their standing in this academic competition,

Roseborough ‘15 said “On the first day of school, when I went to get my schedule, Mrs. Tiffin was helping hand them out. I said hello, and she said that she had good news for me, that I was a National Merit Scholar SemiFinalist.” Bidwell ‘15 responded that she had been called down to the principal’s office during her first period, and was informed there.

After receiving such an award, the next step on these seniors’ minds is where they will apply this accomplishment and in what field.

Oregon Has 4th Worst Graduation Rate JENNIFER TAPIA-LEMUS / Opinion Editor

T

he Oregon Department of Education has concluded that Oregon has the fourth highest high school dropout rate in the nation as of 2013 with an average of 68 percent of seniors graduating on time.

Since 2013 all Salem-Keizer high schools are above that average with 86.6 percent of students graduating on time. That means that about 32 percent high schoolers do not enroll on time or drop out before October 1. Many

re-enroll after the October 1st and continue to graduate on time.

Statistics show that multi-racial, latino and African American ethnicities are most likely to drop out.

Amongst these students, those who are economically disadvantaged are most likely to drop out as well.

South Salem High School contains a 43 percent of students who come from different racial backgrounds. With that being said, the dropout

rate for these students is on a great track. Compared to the Oregon average, South is below the average by 0.5 percent for school dropouts but we have great diversity.

As for other schools in our district with less diversity have a higher dropout rate from students that come from different ethnicities.

South Salem High School is the only high school that has received the RAMP certificate from the American School Counselor

Association meaning that South has some of the best counselors in the district who have lots of contact with their students. With that being said, counselors at South track down students who drop out and try to get them on track. “We meet with every single kid [on the verge to drop out]... and we re-enroll them and do attendance contracts, try to hook them up with classes they really like. We meet with them regularly,

get them involved with a mentor program we have and work really hard on getting them involved… A student who is involved is a student who will stay here.

Whether it be a sport or a club. It’s [school] not just grades, it means a lot more than that.” said Todd Bobeda If a student is far behind in school and is considering dropping out, South offers many programs to help these individuals graduate.

Make sure you are getting the right vehicle.

You could wind up an unhappy car owner if you haven’t thought carefully about how many people and how much luggage or gear you need to carry.

Assess the worth of your old car.

Whether you plan to trade it in or sell it, your current car can be an important factor in your budget. Checking the right website and possibly your local newspaper will give you a realistic valuation. Selling it directly instead of just trading it in may also mean a sizable difference in what you get for it, though it may take a while longer to reap the proceeds.

Decide whether new or used is best for you.

Cars are built better now than in the past, so used cars or certified used cars make a lot of sense. But if you get a rebate or other cost break, the math may be on the side of a new vehicle.

Consider whether leasing or buying makes more sense.

Leasing provides lower monthly payments than buying with an auto loan. But it’s not for everybody. If you don’t have money for a down payment or if you trade your car every two or three years, you may be a good candidate for a lease.

Do your homework and set your target price.

The Internet has made it easier than ever to find out the dealer’s cost for each vehicle and its options. That’s the first step to getting the best possible deal.

Shop for money before you shop for the car.

If you plan to buy with a loan, check your credit union or local bank quotes online to find the lowest rate. Getting a pre-approved loan will give you added confidence in negotiating a good price.

Negotiating a lease.

In the complicated world of leasing, the dealer will have the upper hand unless you learn the jargon and how to negotiate the various segments of a lease deal.

Negotiate a purchase.

If you are doing it yourself, get bids from several dealers, keeping the focus on the dealer’s invoice price, which you will know from your research. You may be able to get bids without going to showroom after showroom.

If you hate haggling, consider using a carshopping service.

Auto-buying services, such as websites or discount clubs, make things easy with pretty good, no-haggle prices. But with most of them, you get quotations from only one dealer. Consumer services that shop several dealers near you may deliver even better prices.

Local Volunteer Opportunities

A

re you looking for something to do in between homework and extracurricular activities? There are many local volunteer opportunities that Salem teenagers can get involved in. By choosing to participate in a volunteer activity, you are giving back,

helping others, and it gives you experience which can benefit you when added to your resume or college applications.

Opportunities for those who love animals are available. For those who like cats, you can perform various volunteer activities at Friends of

Felines such as sorting cans, donations items and helping with cat care. In addition, there are opportunities available to be a dog walker or a foster family for the Willamette Humane Society.

ifteen years ago, in the spring of 1999, a fourplayer fighting game hit American store shelves. The game starred not one, but 12 playable fighters to choose from. These characters included a certain mustachioed plumber, a swordsman in a green hat, a pink marshmallow, an electric yellow rat, and many other peculiar faces. As the years went on, that game spawned two more sequels and gained a very dedicated fanbase. That game was Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64.

For those who don’t know,

Super Smash Bros. is a game licensed by Nintendo starring its own mascots from its various video game franchises. Two to four characters are placed head to head on stage and the goal is to knock them off-screen by building damage and “smashing” them to send them flying.

Smash Bros., specifically the second iteration of the series [Melee], is one of the most prominent video games to be played competitively worldwide.

Starting today [Oct. 3, totally a coincidence that we released this issue today], a new game

will be available for the Nintendo 3DS handheld titled “Super Smash Bros. for 3DS”. This new smash game will see a release on the Wii U in 2015. This version will have an identical roster but different stages, trophies, and HD graphics. The Wii U will also support GameCube controllers. The game features a cast of 51 unique fighters from different Nintendo first-party franchises. There are, however, three third-party characters playable in game. Returning from Super Smash Bros. Brawl is Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog, and the newcomers are Cap-

com’s Mega Man and Konami’s Pac-Man. Fans refer to both the Wii U and 3DS versions as “Sm4sh” or “Smash4”. The 3DS version retails for $39.99.

Instead of a story mode, such as Brawl’s Subspace Emissary, the 3DS version will have a new mode called “Smash Run”.

Smash Run is a five minute adventure map where you can collect power ups, explore, and fight enemies [similar to the Subspace Emissary] before battling it out with a friend.

The game will run at constant 60 FPS [frames per second] for consistently smooth gameplay.

In the competitive scene, most fans would place the balancing of this game between Melee [known for being very balanced] and Brawl [sluggish with overpowered characters]. If you are interested in competitive Smash, Borderlands Games, Gamer’s Oasis, and Timesync Gaming occasionally host tournaments, although usually for Melee or Project M [a fan mod].

“The strongest characters in the game are going to be Little Mac, Palutena, and by the far, the most OP [overpowered], Bowser.” said Ben Pierce ‘15, reflecting on the roster.

tarting today, Pentacle Theatre will be performing Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Directed by Pentacle veteran Jeff Sanders (Steel Magnolias, Twelfth Night), Macbeth follows the life of a Scottish general by the name of Macbeth, who receives a prophecy that states he will one day become king of Scotland.

Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth resorts to evil in order to ensure the prophecy’s fulfillment. Macbeth is a tragic play shrouded in superstition, and you can ask any drama student - the Scottish play must not be named!

Next up on Pentacle’s play list is

Blithe Spirit, by Noël Coward, and directed by Debbie Neel. Starting November 14, Blithe Spirit describes a social butterfly author named Charles Condomine, who, in the hopes of finding inspiration, hires a psychic, who inadvertently revives the spirit of Condomine’s first wife, Elvira.

Elvira then works to make Condomine and his second wife’s lives difficult, which is relatively easy considering Condomine’s second wife, Ruth, can not see or hear her.

Blithe Spirit closes December 6, so make sure you don’t miss these supernatural play dates!

American Horror Story: Freak Show This series is set in 1950’s Florida, where it focuses on the lives of members of a freak show as they try to keep their business alive. The premiere will be Oct. 8 on FX at 10 pm.

Grey’s Anatomy Returning for its 11th season, this drama follows the lives of world class surgeons as they go through problems in their personal lives as well as their work. The premiere will be Sept. 25 on ABC at 8 pm.

everal volunteers at Salem Hospital, such as George Piter, bring their service animals to patients there as a form of therapy, one that is both appreciated and effective.

George Piter has four cats whose names are Junior, Leo, Maggie and Squeak.

Three of these cats he brings to the hospital regularly, where patients love the warmth and comfort they

bring.

Hazel Patton’s dog, Bailey, is a recreational therapy dog at Salem hospital who works alongside a recreational staff person and select patients.

“He showers them with lots of kisses and tail wags.” said Hazel Patton.

Both Bailey and his patients look forward to his hospital visits.Therapy animals, or animal-assisted therapy, has

been shown to have great effects on people. According to the American Humane Association it’s increasingly helpful with children who have suffered from abuse or neglect. These animals also have soothing effects on patients with cancer, ones going through chemotherapy and veterans.

Dress Code T hough this school year and the recently hired administrative staff have brought about many changes at South, the most notable seems to be the dress code. Why is this? It hasn’t technically changed. In fact, in South’s student handbook, there aren’t any rules about two-fingerwide tanktop straps or shorts that are shorter than your fingertips. It is just the district-level basic dress code. Certain items of clothing are mentioned, but the list does not include tank tops, leggings, Ugg boots, or scarves-

which have all been rumored to have been prohibited in SalemKeizer schools this school year.

What HAS changed is the attitude toward the dress code.

This year, the objection to dress code has shifted from casual rebellion and rejection of authority to a feminist or civil rights issue. Posters telling male students ‘Don’t Sexualize My Shoulders’ have been designed.

Female students shouldn’t be punished because men objectify us. We have to dress ‘modestly’, but cheerleaders walk around in tiny uniforms every time we have a home game.

Everyone has a different definition of modesty.”

That said, if the dress code weren’t in place or enforced, what would happen? And for that matter, who is respon-

sible for it in the first place?

The Clypian spoke to Mrs. Tiffin, South’s new principal, about the perceived increase in dress code regulation; she said “There wasn’t a concerted effort to enforce the dress code. People are coming off the summer and it’s easy to forget that you’re supposed to dress a certain way when for the last three months you’ve been wearing whatever you want. It’s hot in our building and I understand that, so I think it’s just that more people are actually breaking the dress code.”

The issue overall seems to be the subjective nature of modesty. What is modest to one person may not be appropriate to another. The consensus of the Clypian staff was that the school and district need to re-evaluate the dress code and what can, or cannot, be worn. In a perfect world, the intent behind an item of clothing would be measured rather than the amount of skin it covers. Unfortunately, until then, students must adhere to the standards put in place by both the school district and South.

ew policies at South have taken effect just recently involving school dress code and being late to classes.

With South’s new dress code policies, you may have noticed that students around the school have been getting “dress coded.”

“The school dress code is being

a little overdramatic because it is oversexualizing body parts and what people wear. It isn’t fair that a girl should have to cover up some parts of her body just so anyone won’t be distracted, ” says Sophia Bashey ‘16.

Students here at South tend to get to class late every once in awhile due to either arriving to

school late, or even not getting back on time from lunch. The new policy states that on the 5th unexcused tardy, a disciplinary referral will be generated and given to the student. On the 9th and 11th tardies, consequences are after-school detentions.

Finally, 13 or more tardies will result in meeting with an admin-

istrator with consequences such as in-school suspension and outof-school suspension.

“The tardy policy is a ridiculous because South is over a quarter mile long. Students need more time than five minutes to go to their locker, pick up textbooks, and use the restroom if they need to,” says Aaron Stahr ‘16.

South’s new policies have been getting negative feedback from some students. Although these policies have been getting negative feedback, we still have to abide by these rules and accept the changes the administration has made in the school.

ummer has officially concluded; with the commencement of fall comes cliché aspects that ignite feelings of nostalgia, such as pumpkins, the smell of cinnamon, and the sweet taste of apple pie.

Sea Salt Caramel Mocha Latté Origin: Starbucks Although mocha implies a chocolate flavor, it was far too empowering; there isn’t a salted caramel taste at all, unless you try really hard searching for it.

The beverage was given time to settle, as a miniature experiment to see if the mocha flavor would remain dominant or if the

salted caramel flavor would rise to the top; instead, the salted caramel taste still did not become apparent and the bottom of the cup had a thick layer of pure chocolate. The chocolate taste was bitter rather than creamy, mimicking the sharp taste of the coffee. It had a likeness to intense hot cocoa. To get the exact taste of the Sea Salt Caramel Mocha Latté, purchase a Caffé Mocha for about a $4 difference in the same size.

Pumpkin Pie Breve Origin: Dutch Bros As a Dutch Bros newbie, this beverage was really impressive. The flavor of the pumpkin pie-that’s right, not ONLY the pumpkin flavor- was strong but not too strong. The drink was creamy with miniscule pieces of ice in it that prevented dilution.

The price could be better for the size, as it is only a 12 oz, though the tremendous taste may account for the cost.

Creamy Pumpkin Spice Chai Origin: Java Crew Chai tea is known for its spicy, slightly bitter flavor, so paired with pumpkin spice, one can imagine what the dominant flavor is. There is a lingering pumpkin taste that gives the drink a unique flavor; once the chai and spice hit your taste-buds, the pumpkin then settles in. This beverage would be the type to drink when cold or in need of a pick-me-up at school, as the bite of the combination

of flavors will surely wake up any tea-fanatic, not to mention warm you up; it tastes best when it is hot and steamy.

This season’s reigning beverage was not difficult to decide; the Pumpkin Pie Breve from Dutch Bros brought its A-game.

One final tip: Upgrade the size from a small to a large to get the most out of the best fall beverage of 2014.

Underwater Basket Weaving: Underwater basket weaving is offered at Reed College of Portland in Oregon, and University of California in San Diego. The class takes place in the campus’ pool where the weaving literally happens underwater unlike the common way that just involves making baskets by dipping reeds into water.

he 2014 Saxon volleyball season looks promising this year, with our varsity team earning seven wins and two losses. “We have a great group of girls in our program right now, and they are working extremely hard to finish well in the new conference and hopefully the state,” said head coach Matthew Leichty, “I’m very happy with the way we have performed to this point, and feel like we can have one of the best finishes at South in a long time if we can continue to play at a high level.”

potential, a few key players to watch this season are: the returning Middle Blocker, Erin Mcnally ‘15. “...she has become a major part of our offense, and has been scoring a lot of points for us out of the middle.” said Leichty, returning Setter, Rishel Samson ‘15.

“This is her second season running the offense, and she has continued to do a nice job for us as one of the top setters in the conference.”

The new Outside Hitter is Tori O’Connor ‘15. “ ...[Tori] joined us this year and is one of the best defensive players in the conference as well as a really smart attacker,” said Leichty.

he world of competitive sports is expanding to accommodate millions of players, who instead of on the field, are playing online. Teams face up against each other in games with grand prizes reaching millions of dollars.

Some games have even reached a global scale with teams from around the world competing, depending on the region of play.

The former champions of the most popular game in the world (League of Legends), the Korean team SK Telecom T1, played perfectly, and with qualities needed to be champs - skill, along with good tactics and great

Why: South has played some of the same teams that Sprague has played, but South has scored better than Sprague against those teams. South beat McKay 41-14, while Sprague beat them 41-20, proving South’s defense to be more superior than Sprague’s.

Why: North Salem’s football team has a record of 2-2 right now, and are #32 in the state according to OSAA. South is #16 and ranked higher than all the teams North Salem has played so far.

How does this affect the common player when they only have a decent comput-

er and a barely compatible wifi connection? It teaches skills that would be taught from a sports team that otherwise wouldn’t be taught to kids who are unable to play traditional sports. It also allows human interaction without the fear of face to face meetings. Online gaming supplies kids and teens with an alternative way to develop skills they would not learn otherwise.

Why: McNary High School has an overall record of 2-2 and place #21 in the state, according to OSAA. South has a record of 4-0, winning all of our games against other teams, including West Salem High School.

Cross Country A TIARA SCOTT / Co-Chief Editor s the cross country team hits the middle of its season, they have had a successful journey so far. “We’ve done really well. We just had a race at North Marion invite and the boys took first place McKay, North, and West Albany from our league were there so there were ten other teams too so, to get first place for the guys was big. The girls got second just barely to McKay. McKay has a tough girls’ team so it was a great day,” said varsity coach Alisha Murdoch. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams have excelled this year even with the three new teams in the league. ”I think

they’ve done a really good job adjusting. I think the three teams fit right in they’re great competition and so it’s fun for our kids to have someone new to race against. They seem even more competitive and ready to compete against these three new teams.

I think it’s fun. New competition and new kids to race against. It kind of brings in just like some excitement and something different than the past couple of years.“ said Coach Murdoch. The next meet for the teams is Wednesday, October 8th at home against North Salem and McNary High Schools.

Football T his season the Saxon football varsity team opened with 41-14 win over McKay. The second win of the season was against McMinnville with a score of 49-24, the third game was against Forest Grove with a final score of 48-27.

ended as a victory for the Saxons, with a score of 3534 making the Saxons the number one school with an undefeated record 4-0 along with Sprague, who are also undefeated. Coach Connor described the game as “spectacular” and “amazing”.

Upcoming games for South

include Milwaukie this Friday in a non league game who is also 4-0, and next week we will face one of our rival schools, Sprague in what is rumored to be an interesting game.

As for players to keep an eye on this season, Coach Mendez says “Connor Fohn,

Gabe Matthews, Jack Gries, Chris Toomb, Matthew Davis Carter, and Omar Hidalgo”.

Both Matthews ‘16 and Fohn ‘15 have been nominated by The Statesman Journal for athlete of the week.

aylynn Bailey ‘14 a former South student who now plays college football for Oregon State University. He plays on an intense level of football, but “There’s nothing better than Friday night lights because of the atmosphere.” Bailey said.

Bailey didn’t have any sports scholarship and walked on as a running back. He has an average rushing yards of 8.3.

In his senior year he scored 17 touchdowns and rushed nearly 1,500 yards.

“College is like no other. Playing in front of 40,000+ people is unreal.

Bailey also added “college is like no other.” He loves what he does and will probably continue on to take it to a professional level. He’s number 25 on the roster and will definitely be a player for the opposition to watch out for.

Saxon Wrap Up South’s Weekly Talk Show

he boys’ soccer team started of the season with a three wins, two ties, and one loss, and are hopeful they will put out as many wins as they can this year in order to advance and compete in the conference championship. “Our conference is very strong. Mckay, North, and West have been and will be tough opponents. Additionally, newcomers Forest Grove and McMinville are strong teams. All of those teams, in addition to us, will be competing for the conference championship,’’ said head coach Johansen. As for the girls’ soccer team, they are expecting great results as well this season, to compete in the Greater Valley Conference. “We have great expectations for this season, as we do every season. We feel that we have a good chance at winning the GVC,’’ added girls head coach Alvaro.
