DIRECTOR'S NOTE No one can prepare you for those first few months of parenthood— that magical, exhausting, crazy moment in time that changes your life forever. This play is a window into the first few months of motherhood for our characters. As soon as rehearsals began, I immediately began reliving those first days with my own baby— Some days were so hard! Most days were a blur, because I was so sleep-deprived and overwhelmed. When the baby cried, I cried too! I also remember that it felt like my heart would burst out my chest, because I had never felt this kind of love before. The beauty of this script is that it distills all of this emotionally messy, chaotic time into very real backyard conversations between our characters. Jessie, Lina, Adrienne, and Mitchell are completely different. However, once we see past the facade of socioeconomic class, gender expectations, and self-judgements, we see that becoming a parent is challenging for everyone. There is no one “right” way to be a mom. Jessie and Lina are brought together because of circumstance, but their heartfelt connection helps them weather these sometimes dark first months. These moments, like childhood, are fleeting, and I hope you enjoy Molly Smith Metzler's poignant and funny play as much as we did rehearsing it. Reiko Ho

SEASON 8 Trust your instincts. CRY IT OUT By Molly Smith Metzler Previews: NOV 14-16 Opening: NOV 17 | Closing: DEC 16 $20 Preview Performance $35 Performances A hilarious comedy about the absurdities of motherhood.

A hilarious comedy about the absurdities of motherhood. Produced by special arrangement with DRAMATIC PUBLISHING, Woodstock, Illinois

Jessie is Ivy League-educated and a prestigious lawyer; Lina has a night-school nursing degree and terrible credit—but they have one huge thing in common: they’ve been cracked open by the love they feel for their newborns. The two new moms have agreed to meet for a naptime coffee in their adjoining yards where both their baby monitors get reception. A fast unlikely friendship is born over the trials and tribulations of new motherhood. Reluctantly, the duo becomes a trio when an ultra-wealthy neighbor asks if his wife, Adrienne, can join them. Afterall, she is another new mom who is “having a hard time.” But how could a woman from Sands Point, one of the most expensive Great Gatsby-esque neighborhoods in the whole country, possibly be “having a hard time”? In this laugh out loud comedy with dark edges, Cry It Out takes an honest look at the complexities of parenthood, the power of female friendship, the dilemma of going back to work, and the effects of class disparity on motherhood in America.
