Whitney Morse, Artistic Director, The Sharon® L. Morse Performing Arts Center

John & Jen opens this month at The Studio Theatre™! This month we are very excited to get back into the swing of things at The Studio Theatre™. Season 4 begins in just a few weeks with John & Jen. It is a touching and intimate two person musical about the stress that war, differing political ideologies, and abuse can have on a familial relationship; and how the scars of that pain can ripple out through generations. The music is lovely and the two performers we have hired to portray the roles are both power-houses. I recently saw our Jen (Kelly Morris Rowan) in a production of Heartbreak House at Mad Cow in Orlando and she was stellar. I have only seen Craig Smith at our auditions and in rehearsal, but that was all I needed to know he would be the perfect John. We also have the “Dynamic Duo” back together for this project – Gary Powell as Music Director and Jeremy Seghers a Director! You might remember they worked together last season on fan favorite, The Story Of My Life. Now here they are again crafting another beautiful intimate two hander musical. I know I am very excited to finally see this story on stage as I have never had the pleasure of seeing it fully produced. And that is one of my favorite things: seeing a show that is new to me on The Studio stage.

IN SUPPORT OF

A Nashville icon for more than two decades, Trace Adkins has made his mark on the countrymusic industry. 11 million albums sold. Time-honored hit singles. Momentous, fiery and always memorable live performances. Grammy nominations. CMT and ACM awards. Nearly 200 million plays on YouTube. Hell, even a slew of movie and TV roles have come the Grand Ole Opry member’s way. But ask Adkins what’s left to prove in his career and the small-town Louisiana native says it’s simple: the itch remains. To create. To collaborate. To continually feel the excitement that comes after whipping up a new song out of thin air and laying it down to tape. It’s what, after all these years, he says he still craves. “It’s an adrenaline rush and I love it,” says Adkins, who is back in the studio working on a new project via, BBR Music Group/Wheelhouse Records. “There’s nothing else like that,” the Louisiana naive offers. “That is still my favorite thing to do in this business. Go into the studio with just some lyrics and a melody and then let the finest musicians in the world help take it and turn it into something magical. It liberates me. I just dig it!”

NOV 19th - DEC 22nd

Over the last two decades, our country has grown more and more divided. The effects have been taken out on families, politics, social class, and the culture at large. No matter your affiliation, we all have the topics we want to avoid over Thanksgiving dinner. This season at The Studio we have chosen four stories that search for unity in a nation fighting for common ground. The titles we chose for this upcoming season convey important relationships hurt and broken by divisive opinions of loved ones. Through listening, can we reach across the divide? Only then can we truly begin to manifest the American Dream. In the words of George H. W. Bush, "In crucial things, unity. In important things, diversity. In all things, generosity." Presenting season four at The Studio Theatre™: We, the people, reach across the divide.

From secret handshakes to hidden family bonds, this two-person musical presents the question: how can two siblings brought up in the same household become such contrasting adults? John and Jen are always there for each other, but as the country becomes divided over the war in Vietnam, so does the family, and battle lines are drawn between the once-close siblings. From creators Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald, John & Jen is a two person original musical that honors brothers and sisters, as well as parents and children. It is set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990.
