It is especially fun, because with each subscription you receive an actual passport that you get stamped at each show you come to and you receive a complimentary featured drink that is specific to the region of show you are attending that evening. For those of who who don’t want to partake in the mixed drink, you do have the option to choose another non-alcoholic drink of choice instead. There are nine international show options this year and you only have to choose five of them to receive a 20% discount. But we certainly won’t blame you if you want to choose more than five. Music by Andrew Lippa Lyrics by Tom Greenwald Book by Lippa & Greenwald Honor the old, but live for the new.

Tom Greenwald & Andrew Lippa

From secret handshakes to hidden family bonds, this two-person musical presents the question: how can two siblings brought up in the same household become such contrasting adults?

Lyrics By

Tom Greenwald

John and Jen are always there for each other, but as the country becomes divided over the war in Vietnam, so does the family, and battle lines are drawn between the once-close siblings. From creators Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald, John & Jen is a two-person original musical that honors brothers and sisters, as well as parents and children, set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990.

John & Jen is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

NEIGHBORS: A FAIR TRADE AGREEMENT by Bernardo Cubria A Fair Trade Agreement

Red, White, and Azul.

By Bernardo Cubria

Meet Joe. Joe lives in a big, colorless mansion. Meet José. José lives in a colorful shack. Joe and José are neighbors with a big divide. The creek than runs between their homes doesn’t stop them from digging deep to find their fortunes. This new two-man play is a wild allegory that is seriously funny. Written by Bernardo Cubria, this absurd comedy was a semi-finalist at the 2017 Eugene O’Neil Playwrights Conference. This production will be the South East premiere.

ASSASSINS Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Book by John Weidman “Angry men don’t write the rules, and guns don’t right the wrongs.” Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s 30-year-old bold, disturbing, and alarmingly funny musical follows 10 assassins, eight presidents, and one American Dream. Assassins is based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr. and inspired by true events following the murders of Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy, and the crude attacks on other sitting presidents. This five-time Tony Award winning musical is a cautionary tale about the pain that comes from going too far when you attempt to change a nation forever.

OTHER DESERT CITIES By Jon Robin Baitz Close the Distance. Novelist Brooke Wyeth is about to publish a family secret. Over Christmas in Palm Springs, she tells her parents about her memoir only to find out she has no idea what she is truly revealing. Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize, Jon Robin Baitz tells an American story about a politically divided family and the lines we are willing to cross for those we love.

Nathaniel Niemi STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Director of Education at The Sharon® Resident Director at The Studio™

24

What is your role at The Sharon? I am the new Education Director for The Sharon®. I teach classes and workshops on acting and performance styles. I also run our summer theatre camps for youth in the community and I am in the process of building some exciting new educational programming. You may also see me as the Manager on Duty during The Sharon season. What is your role at The Studio? I am the Resident Director at The Studio™. I direct about three projects a year. I also help choose and cast the season. I just finished directing the fun musical Now. Here. This. and I’m looking forward to directing our upcoming Season’s: Neighbors and Assassins. What is your background and what got you started in Theatre? I grew up loving to perform and did community theatre from a very young age. I studied theatre in College at East Texas Baptist University and then moved to Chicago where I was an actor for seven years. My very first project in Chicago was a reading of a new musical I worked on with some familiar faces: Whitney Morse, Jason Goedken, and Gary Powell! During my time in Chicago I performed in many musicals and shows for young audiences. After a few years, I decided I wanted to have a bigger hand in creating and crafting shows so I went to grad school in Hawaii and earned my MFA in Theatre for Young Audiences with an emphasis in Directing. The passion to tell resonant stories in innovative ways continues and I’m so thrilled to be here. How did you find out about The Sharon/Studio and what made you want to work here? When I found out that Company was chosen for The Studio’s second season, I pitched a concept for crafting the show with myself as the director. After a fantastic experience working with the team on Company, it has felt like a natural fit to step in full-time. I love the work that The Studio does and the passion that Whitney and the entire team have for bringing thought provoking, professional productions to our audiences here in The Villages®. What’s your favorite part of the job? I love creative collaboration! Whether that is in the rehearsal room or the design meeting or working with students on performing a scene, I love working as a team to make theatre and to see the project we have so carefully crafted find resonance with its audience. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? I’m looking forward to getting to know our audiences! What a gift it is to be able to tailor our programming and classes for such a special audience. Anything else you would like to add? One of the most exciting things I’m gearing up for right now is our Creative Compass Dramatics summer camps. We have such a super program this year and I can’t wait for students to get to perform and play and grow with each other.

Administra of The Villages®

26

The Villages® Employee Softball League 2019 is in full swing! For the second year in a row, The Sharon®, The Studio™, and administration staff created a team now lovingly named “AAA Annihilators” (the name stands for Arts & Administration) and they are thrilled for a summer of spirited competition and fun in The Villages! If you’re wondering what we do on nights we don’t have shows... you can find us on the field. Batter up!

M

Usher Appreciation In the morning, 135 ushers joined Rebecca Morse, House Manager, and Assistant House Manager, Heather Ard, in practicing for fire evacuations and emergency protocols at The Sharon®. They were joined by The Sharon technical crew and The Villages® Fire Department to practice safety procedures in the venue. In the afternoon, the ushers were treated to lunch in the lobby where Rebecca and Heather had organized catering by TooJay’s this year! The Sharon & The Studio staff helped serve as a huge thank you for all the ushers continually do for our venues. At this time Rebecca and Heather handed out The Sharon’s Three Year Pins awarding years of service! Next was the “Blue Glove Award” which is handed out annually to the usher with the most creative suggestion or solution in the house management world. This year the Blue Glove Award was earned by Terry Campbell! Terry suggested that we tag the walkers, wheelchairs etc, that are parked in the light lock boxes during performances. That way, we know whose are whose. There are times when we might have 6 or more on each side. We started tagging the handicapped equipment at the beginning of the season to try it out... and it works great! Therefore, she wons this year’s coveted “Blue Glove Award!” Next, the ushers all had an opportunity to showcase their talents! The Sharon team conducted a Don’t Tell Nonnie event in the lobby for all to participate or sit back and enjoy!
