I was standing in the lobby of The Sharon after a show one night and happened to glance over at one of our lobby trashcans. It was brimming with plastic bottles and cups, and I thought “there must be a more sustainable way to serve our patrons every night.” This got me thinking about how The Sharon could be more green and sustainable. As the world around us is becoming more aware of the impact our waste has on the planet, so must we. Concomitantly, Elizabeth Constant our Booking Coordinator had attended a conference for venues such as ours and they had a guest speaker talking all about how to make your theatre more green and sustainable. Elizabeth came back from that conference fired up to make some changes and it got me even more excited to do the same. So we began brainstorming the simple ways we could make The Sharon more sustainable. We switched to reusable grocery bags for all of our shopping trips. And believe me there are many, between catering for talent and quick runs to Home Depot for bolts, we were using a lot of plastic bags. We also made the conscience choice for employees to stop using disposable drink containers for water or coffee. We bought a nice supply of Sharon mugs for our green room and encouraged all of our staff to bring in their own water bottles and Tervis cups to fill with water from the fountains. We even started giving the talent a Sharon Tervis to keep and encouraged them to use it while they are here rather than throw away plastic cups. And now, the biggest change that you, our patrons, will notice is we will now allow you to bring in any empty water container into The Sharon as long as it has a lid. Feel free to fill it up from our water fountains, rather than purchasing a water bottle that will just then end up in the trash. And this is just the beginning, stay tuned as we announce more ways that The Sharon is going green.

BJ THOMAS BJ Thomas owns one of the most distinctive voices in American pop music - a reassuringly masculine timbre conveyed with a smattering of unique embellishments that represent a distillation of the most influential genres in pop culture. Nothing about the identifiable sound of B.J. THOMAS' voice has changed, but there's a re-energized commitment behind it. Recognizing the continued loyalty of his fans, B.J. has released his first new studio album in seven years with Curb Records. Concurrent with that project, he contributed six songs to the soundtrack and co-stared in the independent picture Jake's Corner. He has also developed an album for release in Brazil, where he remains a significant musical signpost; much of it mirroring his own blue-collar background. "We've always tried to do the right thing as far as getting our music out and encouraging people with positive music," B.J. reflects. Anthony Ciaramitaro, tenor and a Florida native, is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at Florida State University under David Okerlund, and has recently performed the role of Don Ramiro from Rossini’s La Cenerentola with Florida State Opera. Mr. Ciaramitaro had the privilege to perform as a Studio Artist with Wolf Trap Opera during their 2015 season as Basilio from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, The Messenger from Verdi's Aida, and among the ensemble of Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles. Mr. Ciaramitaro has been a concert soloist for The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, The Messiah Choral Society, and The Villages Philharmonic. Mr. Ciaramitaro has an avid love of the stage and is eager to one day have an illustrious career as a singer of opera, oratorio, and concert repertoire. Samantha Barnes Daniel is a native of Central Florida and an alumna of the University of Central Florida where she earned degrees in Vocal Performance, French Horn, and English Literature. She then pursued a Master’s Degree at Northwestern University in Chicago. Ms. Barnes Daniel twice won first place at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for the Central Regionals in 2008 and the Southeastern Regionals in 2012. Both years she continued on to the National Semi-Finals on the Metropolitan Opera Stage. She is also a prize winner from the American Opera Society of Chicago, was a Sarah Tucker Grant Nominee in the Richard Tucker Foundation Competition, a semi-finalist in the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition, and a finalist in the Marcello Giordani International Vocal Competition. Sean Christopher Stork, lyric baritone, has been singing across the state of Florida
since graduating from Florida State University in 2007. His regular engagements include singing with the First Coast Opera in St. Augustine, The Florida Lyric Opera in Tampa, The Villages Philharmonic, and Orlando Philharmonic Orchestras. He has made his unique mark on such roles as Guglielmo in Cosí fan tutte, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Escamillo in Carmen, Procolo in Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali, Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Captain Corchoran in HMS Pinafore, and musical theater roles such as Hucklebee in The Fantasticks, Rapunzel’s Prince in Into the Woods, and Harold Hill in The Music Man. Mr. Stork is currently performing across the country with such auspicious ensembles as The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hudson Valley Chorale, Orlando Harmony, Orlando Exchange, the Dickens Carolers, and the Basilica Choir of the National Shrine of Mary.

Maestro Magic This August, Pasquale Valerio traveled to Italy to conduct the Orchestra Filarmonia di Benevento under the direction of Maestro Antonio Pappano and to scout future musicians to bring to The Villages. VPO musicians joined the orchestra with Sir Antonio Pappano and Pasquale Valerio for few different concerts including Yaniv Cohen on the viola and Sasha Trufanov on the French Horn. Sir Antonio Pappano is the Music Director of the Royal Opera House and Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome, Principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, and a regular guest conductor with the world orchestras such as the Wiener Philharmoniker in Berlin, The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Netherlands, The New York Philharmonic, The Chicago Symphony, The Met Opera, and more!

The orchestra is comprised of graduate college student with their PhDs and current students. It is a very selected orchestra. The Artistic Director, Francesco Ivano Ciampa, is one of the most popular opera conductors in the world. “I feel truly blessed to enjoy such a life style and absolutely humbled to watch my dear friend and mentor Pasquale Valerio receive such respect and love from so many brilliant people. Sir Antonio Pappano addressed the audience in concert to thank Pasquale as a friend and colleague, tell them about The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra he started in Florida, and credit him with preparing the orchestra before his arrival. Judith Farris is the teacher of many of New York’s finest singers. Some of the renowned singers she has instructed include Tyne Daly, Donna McKechnie, David James Carroll, Betty Comden, Matthew Broderick, Peter Allen, Anthony Quinn, Marcia Lewis, Marilu Henner, Cheryl Ladd, and Kaye Ballard. Judith is often called upon to assist singers as a vocal therapist and to help keep their voices young and healthy. Judith continues to work as a coveted teacher in New York. The students in the Farris studio learn to master all types of singing. Not limited by singing just classical repertoire, Opera, or “traditional” musical theater, her singers master all types of singing that are commanded in the business today with ease and vocal health. In her studio, there are no limits to what a singer can do if their foundation is correct, and the positive flare of which she presents this technique is inspiring to both beginner and professional alike. As a singer, Judith’s primary genre was as an Opera singer. In addition to having had a successful career in Europe, she has enjoyed appearances with the Santa Fe Opera, the Opera Theater of St Louis, Tulsa Opera, the Washington D.C. Opera, the Chicago Opera Theater, Forth Worth Opera, Connecticut Opera, the Toronto Opera, Hartford Opera and performances at the Kennedy Center. Judith Farris has appeared with many of the finest orchestras and conductors including the St. Louis Symphony, National Symphony, the American Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Honolulu Symphony, the Tulsa Orchestra and the National Symphony in Washington D.C. She has appeared and recorded with the New York Philharmonic (Beethoven “Choral Fantasy”), and sung as a featured soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Judith has been a frequent guest with New York Musical Sacra, has sung under the baton of master conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, Leonard Slatkin and was directed by Gian Carlo Menotti in a productions of his opera “The Consul.” Her many awards include, the Marian Anderson Scholarship, the National Arts Club of NYC for contraltos, the Minna Kauffman Rudd award from the Metropolitan Opera, The Lucrezia Bori award, and the Metropolitan Opera Katherine Long Grant Award.

HOW HOWIE GOT HIS START: Howie started his career on a dare in Toronto in 1979 and then one night during a trip to Los Angeles he was at the legendary Comedy Store on amateur night and Howie was coaxed by his friends to get up and try his luck. As fate would have it, there was a producer in the crowd who immediately hired him to appear on the comedy game-show Make Me Laugh. His appearance on the show led to talk show appearances, a stint as Diana Ross' opening act and eventually to the television series St. Elsewhere, where Howie spent six seasons as "Dr. Wayne Fiscus" on the award-winning NBC drama.

Within the walls of Truvy’s beauty shop, set in the deep Bayou of Louisiana, are six women whose lives increasingly hinge on the existence of one another. Together, they absorb the passing seasons, just like the weathered wooden structure of the salon “home” that they share. What if, like these six women, we didn’t have to go it alone? What if the comfort we’ve been searching for has always been there, right in our own backyard? At turns both laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Steel Magnolias reveals the strength of the human condition and our shared need for companionship. What is your role at The Sharon?
I am the new Lighting Director at The Sharon and Resident Lighting Designer at The Studio. That basically means that I will be working with our Assistant Lighting Director to support all of the lighting needs of any production that comes through either space. For shows at The Sharon, that entails communicating with touring groups about their lighting needs and making sure we are ready to meet those needs when they arrive. For shows at The Studio, I work with our directors, other resident designers, and members of our production team to design the lighting you see on stage from what lights to hang, to where they are aimed, to what color they are and when they turn on and off.
What is your background and what got you started in Theatre?
I have a BA in Theatre from Hope College in Holland, Michigan and an MFA in Lighting Design & Technology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in Illinois. My earliest experience with theatre was in second grade when the local high school was doing The Music Man and needed little kids to be in the chorus. I auditioned and got in and had a great time playing with the “big kids.” When I was in middle school we moved to a small town called Spencer, Iowa which has a phenomenal community theatre and high school theatre program where I continued to perform. I went to undergrad thinking of myself as an actor, but while there I started working with the lighting crew, just because it was a way to make some money while still working in the theatre department. By the time I left undergrad, I had expanded my interests to include not only acting and lighting, but also directing. Over the next nine years of living in Chicago and balancing my time between day jobs and theatre work on the side, I solidified my passions and figured out that lighting was really my calling. I knew
if I was going to make a living as a Lighting Designer, for my personal journey the next step needed to be graduate school. That led me to three years of study and work at The University of Illinois. Those three years paid off, because now I get to do this full-time and don’t have to balance my time between this and an office job in which I’m less invested.
How did you find out about The Sharon and what made you want to work here?
I’ve known the Artistic Director, Whitney Morse and Producer, Jason Goedken for about eight years. We met in Chicago through theatre and mutual friends. They’ve kept in touch over the years and this summer while I was working as a Production Manager and Lighting Designer at a theatre in Michigan they contacted me about this position opening up and they snapped me up! I was excited to join this community of talented and passionate theatre artists. My wife and I see this as a place where we could possibly settle for a few years.
What are you most looking forward to in your new role? I’m going to cheat and say two
things I’m excited about. I’m excited about working with some of the big touring shows that are coming through The Sharon this year like Chicago, Rock of Ages, and Spamalot, but I’m also really looking forward to lighting our shows at The Studio this year. Weston Corey, my predecessor, is lighting The Story of My Life, but I’ll be handling the remaining three shows and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be tackling these productions.
