The company had two towers and licenses, stations essentially, one in Rhode Island and one in Phoenix, Arizona. Both 50,000 watt stations creating original content on both coasts so to speak. Soon enough we were creating self-funded, and sponsor and advertiser supported as well, original talk radio content “nationwide”!

o it this way”, my trainer barked as I aspired to become a professional Wrestler. It was wonderful, Just like having my father cheer me on in sports as a child and edify me in the techniques of athletic and physical combat. When I was 9 years old I was crowned, “King of the Playgrounds”, my Queen was Mayor Buddy Cianci’s daughter, and that was out of six districts! I was King of the World at that point! When I was 11 I earned Boy Scout of the Year and a FREE trip to Camp Yago, $350 in 1970’s dollars which meant a lot for my working parents.

In 1997 I relocated to the Phoenix office of the company and helped to build the infrastructure to what was becoming a syndicated Network and programs that had a much bigger reach and larger audiences.

Working several different part time jobs at 16 I started travelling Southern New England setting up rings and training to be a professional Wrestler. I was big enough, and had a desire to create and entertain. Training to be original when you’re getting the wind knocked out of you as part of the job is indeed a challenge but one that I welcomed.

In 1999 I was approached by a company, SurfNet Media Group that was pioneering internet radio streaming with 60 channels of originally programmed music, which was huge at the time, and a million or so listener sessions a month. They were launching a new talk radio station VoiceAmerica and sought me out to help build their internet talk radio model and team for them. The concept of being able to recruit and train and produce potentially hundreds of shows “globally” was certainly intriguing and something I had already been thinking about to take my clients to a whole new level. Keep in mind, this is 2000, Napster is in the middle of being crushed by the content police in the minds of many. ASCAP/BMI are trying to figure out how to collect. There is no iTunes, PayPal is in it’s infancy, the music business is trying to figure out what happens next. I think they’re still trying to figure out what happened!

I was almost was there on the Pro Wrestling Scene, but then you shouldn’t give a 17 year old a motorcycle I suppose. Cracked Spleen, Cracked Liver, Internal Bleeding and the nearly fleeting thoughts of glory was my diagnosis for over a week in St. Joseph’s hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island. After the end of my wrestling career I knew that I still enjoyed the idea of being part of the creative process and in the entertainment business somehow. Radio and broadcasting seemed like something I would enjoy, maybe even one day be in front of the microphone doing a show about wrestling.

On the other hand, the traditional print and broadcast media segments are being consolidated into mega media firms like Fox, Cox, Media General, Gannett etc, etc... The era of BIG syndication and the elimination of local talk radio began. Howard Stern, G. Gordon Liddy, assortments of “Drs” offering advice and the the big papa of them all, Rush Limbaugh took full control of the airwaves with syndication deals that took advantage of developing technologies and cost-reducing, profit raising opportunities for terrestrial stations that hadn’t really been seen since the days of the Ovaltine hours and syndicated Dick Tracy and Little Orphan Annie.

I landed a job at a terrestrial station in Providence, Rhode Island that had an interesting take on talk radio, which individuals or companies or causes could essentially “selffund” a talk radio show and actually get it on the air. This I learned was brokered radio! This was much different than what was happening in traditional talk radio where almost everything was syndicated, or sports or local PBS type content. Here they were creating new content that wasn’t subject to being immediately paid for by advertisers like the syndicated shows.

Over the next 17 years I’d do a reverse take over, rounds of fundraising, patents, trademarks, lease negotiation, bandwidth issues, FIBER, FIBER, FIBER, and many other “learning experiences”. Eventually I privatized the talk radio portion of the company as we spun out the software. Now I had (almost) total control of the medium. The old maxim of “Be Careful What You Wish For” isn’t always a bad thing. Every day I enjoy being the leader of a team of professionals that recruit new talent, create new models and are supported by a production staff that has the freedom to embrace new broadcast technologies and generate what I hope is content that maybe, hopefully changes people’s lives for the better. I still want to do the Wrestling Show, but in the meantime, wrestling with the everyday challenges of achieving even a small part of your goals is something we should all feel good about. More people were listening to talk radio, and talking about talk radio, but they weren’t offered any choices of content. It looked like a dream come true! When word got out I was working on a deal to move to internet talk radio with a start up holding some serious patent pending distributable content software I ended up bringing along a solid team right out of the gate. It was definitely a from the ground up opportunity. What started out as a $99 mixing board, a couple of Dual Deck CD players, 3 or 4 working microphones and a DSL line with a studio that could fit one comfortably became the standard of consistent, creative and quality content creation that helped establish internet talk radio broadcasting, and even podcasting and vodcasting as viable communication vehicles.

Larson MONDAY MENTORING MOMENTS Whether you are wanting to attract that next big client, JV Partner, or you are simply trying to get your children to listen to you, building rapport is key. What is rapport? According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of rapport is, “a friendly, harmonious relationship; especially: a relationship characterized by agreement, mutual understanding, or empathy that makes communication possible or easy” https:// www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/rapport People want to work with those that are like them, or at least like minded. The more a person can understand or identify with you, the more likely they will be to work with you. A technique that is great for building rapport is mirroring. Mirroring is when you mimic the person with whom you are conversing. Of course if you are behaving like them, people will feel like they can identify with you and they will like you. It is human nature to like people that are like us. Here are a few things that you can mirror when meeting with a potential client or JV partner: - Body Language: If the other person is crossing their legs, cross yours. - Speed of Speech: If the other person is speaking more slowly, slow down your speech. - Words: If the person you are meeting with tells you they want something fantastic, then don’t say you are going to give them something marvelous, use the word “fantastic” to describe your services or product. Remember when mirroring to stay true to yourself. You aren’t going to change your beliefs or options to mirror another’s, you are simply reframing what you are saying in a way that allows someone to feel comfortable and better relate to you. And that is how to build better rapport with the people around you. 11

Springtime For Small Business

2017 is shaping up to be an exciting year for small

businesses, with a rebirth of economic optimism being magnified in the small employer space. The recent “State of Small Business Report” (http://bit. ly/1cHtFs1) shows exactly what I’ve been feeling for several months now, entrepreneurs are chomping at the bits and ready to go with the belief that this is their year. According to the report, 51% of companies anticipate adding employees this year, 69% anticipate revenue growth. The interesting one is; 81% believe the new Trump administration will be either great or a non-issue for business. This supports the point I’ve raised when reassuring people over the past year. Small business owners are not used to, and are not looking for help from the government. They know they’ll live or die based on their own tenacity and resourcefulness. There are 4 things I believe we entrepreneurs need to focus on- in order to take full advantage of the promise of 2017. One: Get focused! I begin new ventures and business relationships at the “end.” I’m a devout believer in the “begin with the end in mind” concept. Most people approaching me for help with their business have no idea where they’re headed. They know what they are working on but not what they’re working toward. It’s a critical problem and a common reason for business failure. Knowing precisely where you are headed gets you there faster. Two: Pay attention to history. The business climate has seasons and a fairly predictable pattern. There are periods of growth, but growth often leads to bubbles, bubble bursting and recession creations. It’s a predictable reset of the economy. These seasons help curb run away inflation and should be expected in a free market economy. Know where you are in your industry and pay attention to the historic “season.” In my opinion, we will have steady growth through 2017 and 2018. I fully expect a reset around 2019.

Three: Cash Is Critical. If you follow my thinking then you should prepare for leaner times. Now is a time for harvesting. Instead of thinking shortsightedly and burning through your new profits, follow the example of Joseph of the Old Testament. He saved Egypt by ensuring that supplies were stored up for future years of famine. This allowed Joseph to ascend to the most powerful person in Egypt. He’s still a celebrated figure 4000 years later. If you want to build real wealth, use this time to squirrel away some cash so that you can take full advantage when the market takes a dive. Much wealth is created in down markets. Four: Don’t operate in a vacuum. Great athletes have coaches. Great musicians have mentors. Powerful political leaders have trusted advisors. Leaders of large enterprise companies hire business advisors. Notwithstanding all of this evidence, most small business people don’t think they need a coach, WRONG! We all need someone to call us on our BS. To encourage us when we are worried. To tell us what they see happening with us personally and professionally. Remember, “You can’t read the label from inside the bottle.” If you’re wise, you’ll find a great coach to help you navigate the crazy waters of entrepreneurism and continue toward realizing your full potential. Spectators Welcome VIP Fundraiser Prime Motivation Promotes High School Unity By: Bill Montgomery On behalf of International All-Stars Marketing and the Prime Motivation’s high school tour, I am Bill Montgomery and it’s a pleasure uniting with all of you. We have a Fundraising event scheduled for March 11, which will allow us to connect with more high schools and continue our quest to uplift the lives of or youth. Showcasing the talents of our youth and our team is how we break down the walls of division and amalgamate talents towards creative unity. Back in the early 2000’s when we did our first high school and felt the rush of motivation, it launched us towards success and the realization of the difference we were making.

Elite Car Show This will be our 3rd annual show, and we are creating car teams to compete against each other for bragging rights, and to show how “Teamwork makes the dream work.” This event will feature Lifestyle entertainment, with DJ’s, and 2 live bands. One band is from LA and the other from nearby San Diego. Media from local to national outlets will be in attendance, with photographers, VIP personnel and social media reporters covering the event. It’s all to benefit the high school kids and bring talent with good partners onto more campuses. It’s been a struggle getting the word out and showing what can be done with unity.

The Resilience Factor Many of us are happy with a lifestyle that consists of

comfort at a certain level; keeping the bills paid and just getting by. There is nothing wrong with this except the “just getting by “can be risky when unexpected expenses, which seem to always be around the corner come into play, This “non motivated” attitude may be very beneficial with regards to one’s health. Doing and producing only what is needed to get by is usually less stressful than the entrepreneurial mindset others relish. The complacent existence also has its stresses living with the fear of not having the resources to take care of the unexpected expenses. The modus vivendi we chose often develops into an entrenchment, which is the establishment of an attitude, habit or belief. This “ establishment “ once developed is firmly in place and change becomes very difficult or unlikely. Whichever kind of person you are, content or driven, both will have their challenges. If you are falling behind in just getting by, or not on schedule in reaching your goals, don’t worry; just get back on track. If there is a slight set back or a major set back just pick up what’s left and keep going. Mistakes can be costly but they are learning tools and hopefully remembered.

Going through a loss when you’re young is not as difficult as when you’re sixty. I had goals I worked at for over 40 years via investments and lost eighty percent due to a storm and the Great Recession of 08. Whatever, it did not bother me, I just would see what’s left and move forward. I remember my father said: “ You think you have troubles till you lose your health.” Well I lost much of what I had but I still had my health or so I thought. Eight months later I was given a diagnosis that when the doctor shared it with me, he looked down, shook his head and said: “this will be very tough to beat.” I responded with: “So is my immune system.” They said the high doses of chemo I must have would be hard on my system. My response was: “Yes if I was getting that kind of chemo, I’m getting the healthy kind that’s good for you.” I had five times the usual dose and never got an upset stomach. Well if you want to give God a laugh, tell Him your plans. As I mentioned earlier, you just do not know what’s around the corner.” I kept everything that came at me in a positive light with faith. I would say Edison, Bell and Marconi would fit the bill but I will leave these historic individuals in the history books for now. For this article I will share the influence that still exists today due to the admiration they had and still have world wide. As my areas of choice for influence I will pick music, western film, comedy, talk show host and directors. The person of choice in music I chose none other than Elvis Presley, probably the most popular entertainer of all time. He dominated the music world for years and made thirsty one movies. Elvis not only broke records he broke them in rock, country and gospel. This is one of the reasons Presley was so popular, accepted, and admired all over the world. To this day his music, posters and imitators are still a hot ticket items. When his performance was over and he left the stage the audience had to be told “Elvis had left the building “to get them to leave. President Nixions most popular picture was when he had a picture with Elvis. The Prime Minister of Japan loved Elvis so much he had an Elvis collection. The biggest music and film stars wanted to meet him and the list goes on. My western film pick was probably the biggest on screen star of all time, non other than John the duke Wayne. Not willing to make sacrifices or do the work. You already have enough on your plate, taking on more means something gets set aside. Sacrifice means giving up something of value for something of even greater value. What are you willing to “cut off ” right now?

4. Lack of belief or confidence. If you are certain something will work, you’ll risk it. Uncertainty makes you ponder anticipated risks. Address these issues with a powerful purpose and positive goals, altering the risk-reward ratio. 5. Fear. Sometimes, it comes down to fear. What if I fail? Then what? “The inner critic” constantly reminds you that you could fail. Fear keeps you from moving forward. 6. Life. You have other things to do. Like running your business, or doing your job. The question is; are the things you are already doing worthwhile? Again, weigh what you’re already doing against your purpose and goals. If your existing actions are effectively driving you towards your goals, there’s no need to do more, but if you aren’t moving sure-footedly in that direction, then you need to shift things around and make room for what will. You may have to realign your priorities, and reevaluate your options so that your available time and energy is dedicated to moving you in the right direction. So, what stops you? Any one of these six things can hold you back. Once you identify what stops you, eradicate it and get moving. Now you can transform your ideas into action and design a winning 2017! Criminal Minds former star Thomas Gibson recently joined Twitter, and he has obtained 29.4K followers since August 16th, 2016.

Following the notoriously bloody start to The Walking Dead’s 7th Season, which was recently greenlit for its 8th season prior to the release of the season premiere, the show’s household popularity has significantly plummeted after the premiere of the season. Despite a killer premiere with 17.03 Million viewers, the preceding episodes have dipped to as low as 10.40 Million viewers. The same has applied for CBS’s FBI Behavioral Analysis Drama Criminal Minds, whose fate now lies in consequence of firing Veteran Lead Star Thomas Gibson from playing SSA Aaron Hotchner, the lead of the elite FBI’s BAU Unit. His contract was terminated after an onset altercation with Writer/ Producer Virgil Williams while shooting an episode that Gibson was directing. Since Thomas’s departure, numerous petitions, articles and angry social media rants have been released, the most notorious hashtag trending being: #NoHotchNoWatch. In an attempt to repair the damage caused in the wake of this decision, CBS has brought in two new actors to the season to replace his character’s position. Once a household celebrated TV Show the show now faces rumords of cancellation if the viewership continues to plummet, according to an article by HNGN. At its prime, it would bring the attention of 19.57 Million viewers. But after the depature last season of fan favorite Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan, and after Gibson’s termination from Season 12, the show drew in only 8.92 Million viewers. Criminal Minds has only one solution to repair its reputation: Rehire Thomas Gibson back on the show. As for The Walking Dead, AMC appears to be slowly repairing the viewership dip by the improvement of the mid-season finale and its set up for 2017’s 8-episodebatch. But only time will tell if their audience will increase or continue to fall. At its midseason finale in December, Criminal Minds released “Scarecrow” conjuring up 7.77 million fans to watch. When the heart-pounding mid-season finale aired for The Walking Dead in December with the episode entitled “Hearts Still Beating”, the dramatic plot twists drew in 10.58 million viewers with high positive hope for our heroes at the end. When Criminal Minds returned with its 9th episode entitled “Profiling 202” written by Virgil Williams for the midseason premiere January 4th, the show only brought in a disappointing 7.27 million viewers. However when The Walking Dead returned to terrorize and uplift viewers February 12th with its 9th episode entitled “Rock In The Road”, directed by seasoned veteran genius Greg Nicotero, and written by Angela Kang, AMC boosted back to 12 million viewers tuning in. The increased viewership numbers may greatly have been affected by the impact of social media marketing, as previously have been proved with hit shows that trend online and Twitter like The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Marvel’s Agents of SH.I.E.L.D. The positive shocks of the trends have boosted the shows reputation, and are primarly marketed on the excellence of story fictional development that stuns fans globally. As the struggle to remain afloat continues, the previous success of Criminal Minds can now only be wished for with hope, as it emerges without Hotch into a grim light.

My life story is full of abuse however; it’s also full of growth and triumph. I survived abuse from my mother, two religious cults, and two marriages. I feel we choose to be defeated by our circumstances, or rise above it. I take everything we go through and learn from it, not use it as an excuse to fail. That’s why I created a Foundation with my friend Shelly, who passed on. I’m determined to make it a success in her memory. As an advocate, I’ve defended women in court suffering from domestic violence and witnessed the “JUST US” system first hand. I also fought my own case and won. I have been sexually harassed in the entertainment industry, my life was also threatened. I’ve had close contact with actors who were also abused by the industry. It infuriates me when these crimes go unpunished. This world is very sick. Sex trafficking and domestic violence are a major problem in many communities across America and around the world. There are a staggering number of people being trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation. The misconception that the trafficked person comes from other countries is becoming outdated adage. Studies show the number of American citizens being trafficked for the purpose of sex is increasing at an alarming rate. Too often survivors are burdened with rehabilitation through the criminal justice system. This is odd because how many victims consented to be sold voluntarily and what makes them criminals? Looking at the system with a clear conscience, it’s broken. Doesn’t matter if it’s criminal, civil, or the family court system; they all have one common goal, equity. We need to help victims create sustainable lives, by curbing the cost of treatment through the criminal justice

system. Solutions created through collaborative efforts. Individual groups are not doing enough. Congress isn’t fixing it, and states are doing very little, making me wonder whose profiting from the epidemic on a global scale? A rapidly evolving technical spectrum doesn’t help; it’s causing an increase in trafficking through the Internet. A common misperception in prostitution is people involved are only in it per lack of will, or poor moral standards. Very few individuals are involved because they enjoy the lifestyle. Trafficking and domestic violence are intertwined in a vicious cycle that can only be broken with healing. Most victims remain untreated because of fear or control. Society is handling it with denial and silence. They feel if it isn’t affecting them directly they should let someone else deal with it. Trafficking affect everyone, and stereotypes are: youth, foreigners, and or generally vulnerable people. This must be exposed! A popular form of control is creating addictive patterns in victims. Patterns that last from recruitment until the full-blown stage of addiction are externally hard to prove or model. Value-laden assumptions made and recognized by Nichols’ in 2014, when reporting of inconsistencies in reports including; “only immigrants,” completely ignoring the number of domestic victims, such as runaways when referring to American victims don’t help. I met an attorney on a subway in Los Angeles who works for the U.N. prosecuting human traffickers. She told me: “A good majority of trafficking is hidden under the shroud of the entertainment industry!” We need measures to counter act the long-term effects of sexual trauma. Research shows; crime is a direct result of domestic violence and sexual assault, leading to substance abuse and runaways. This fuels the sex trafficking industry. Is it affecting you? Look at it from a generic statistic; one in three girls is molested or abused by puberty, and one in 5 boys. How big is your family? Who has substance abuse problems? They say substance abuse is linked to childhood trauma in most cases. If society keeps on this destructive path, it’ll lead to the complete destruction of humanity! Paul Pratt Dr.Speed3 My main objective for 2017 is to see how far my voice can carry. I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching the past few months leading up to the new year, and now that I’m here I have been feeling so light because I have shed off a lot of dead weight that was holding me back in 2016 and years prior. I feel excited about my company 2nd Wind Performance. In each entity of training, retail and distribution services, my company is off to the right start. My vision for expanding my brand is inevitable with the great platforms I have been positioning myself to succeed in. My voice this year will be my biggest asset that will allow me to do more effective work with my clients, kids and hopefully the general public when I have been granted the opportunity to speak! If you google the question, “What is epigenetics,” the first thing google will show you is how to pronounce it, the fact that it’s a noun related to biology, and that it’s “the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself.” Sounds simple enough, but what does that mean?

There’s a lot of complicated scientific information explaining epigenetics, but I’ll keep it simple in this article. We all have genetic codes. What we now know is that there are epigenetic codes that influence genetic codes more active or inactive. It’s difficult to alter genes themselves, but we can alter epigenes to control the activeness of genes.

Conrad H. Waddington coined the term epigenetics in 1942; making epigenetics a relatively new concept in our quest for better health. When Waddington coined the term, the physical nature of genes and their role in heredity was not yet known. He was ahead of his time in postulating how genes might interact with their surroundings to produce a phenotype. Bruce Lipton, PhD, is a pioneer in epigenetics – the concept that our genes are not fixed, that they turn on and off.

Epigenetics refers to changing phenotype (outward manifestation) without changing genotype, and it doesn’t necessarily require any fancy surgical intervention or complicated medical treatments. Much of epigenetic research has focused on cancer, but in recent years this research has expanded to behavioral or psychiatric manifestations of epigenetic influence passing through generations. For example, children of malnourished mothers faced with limited food in later life seem to do okay. Those who have an abundance of food develop cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Research is demystifying epigenetics as it relates to our health. For Holistic health practitioners, “epigenetics” is basically giving a name to the type of care and guidance we’ve been giving their clients virtually all along.

My name is Nicholas Reuben, and I have experienced innumerable changes in my life since the day I met Eric Zuley six months ago. One thing that stands out the most is Branding. By: Jayme Claire My opportunity to attend NAMM came the night before when Eric “EZ” Zuley CEO of eZWay and I were attending a conference in Orange County. Literally an hour before speaking with Eric, I was talking with a gentleman about how this time each year, fellow musician friends are sharing Facebook posts about NAMM. I hadn’t yet attended and was eager to see for myself what it was all about. My wish came true an hour later, when EZ’ said he had an extra ticket! My adventurous side lit up and I began brainstorming about this new adventure. When Eric asked me to become eZWay Magazine’s music columnist, my writer’s juices skyrocketed! The next morning January 21st, 2017, I woke up, shot out of bed, dressed to impress, and began my first trip to NAMM. NAMM stands for National Association of Music Merchants and takes place at the Anaheim Convention Center across from Disneyland. It took 40 minutes from Redondo Beach to reach Anaheim by 10:30am. I found parking by noon. Prices ranged from $15 to $60 and since I didn’t arrive before 9am, I ended up biting a small bullet.

I met up with NAMM veteran & Prime Motivation’s, Bill Montgomery, who graciously escorted me around to several booths that were high on his experienced list. Make sure to check out Bill’s non-profit called: “Prime Motivation Automative Experience!” Bill’s team is creating innovative platforms to promote positive messages for our youth to stay in school. My perspective of NAMM 2017 was: Imagine a musician’s Disneyland! No infinitely long lines waiting for the next ride, just a constant stream of bodies flowing from booth to booth. Instead of Mickey ears, and the smell of churros, think baseball caps and beanies. The fashion styles were mostly black and grey strewn across the place. There was an effervescent and mouth-watering aroma of food trucks. Instead of themed music vastly spaced between magical kingdoms, imagine strolling the distance to your neighbors a few doors down and upon arrival, being transported into another music dimension.

I parked a short walking distance from the main entrance, and found this to be most convenient, especially for a female traveling alone. It was a beautiful, crisp California day. Instantly, the first person I picked out in the crowd sitting by the majestic fountains was Gary Miller, I had met him back in December at eZWayCare’s “Toys for Tots” Toy Drive, where I had the honor of performing. I’m highlighting Gary because; his project hits many chords with me. Gary is the founder of “Rock Against Trafficking,” an

I heard EDM being demonstrated by successful producers. Also, violin strings crying their haunting and graceful stories, with saxophones and trumpets piercing conversations amongst themselves. The sound of piano keys rolling under fingertips, with guitar strings wailing, and the boom of kick drums followed me wherever I roamed. In retrospect, the mingling of tones carried me back to the music college I graduated from. The music was alive and as diverse as we all are. I lit up upon seeing Shure’s booth, with their eclectic customized wireless microphones! Even better, I became entranced at VocoPro’s booth, when I saw a silver be-dazzled microphone, a singer’s paradise! Of course lines gathered whenever a music icon strolled by. And there were constant sightings. I saw Stevie Wonder on at least three occasions from outside an eddy of bodies! Before calling it a day, I watched “John Lennon’s Educational Tour Bus,” which 20th Anniversary concert called: the “John Lennon Imagine Party.” It was located outside at the NAMM Nissan Grand Plaza Stage. I wiggled my way to a decent spot for an averaged height girl as myself, to see YouTube sensation, Common Souls, who blessed me with rich and soulful tones. Being a Pop/Soul artist myself, I couldn’t help but quietly sing along amongst the swelling crowd. It was time for the featured artist, as we were graced with R&B/Pop legend: Ronnie Spector & The Ronnettes! Watching her command a stage with top-flight musicians backing her was inspiring, I completely soaked it all in. Summing up a four-day experience in one day, NAMM was music on serious steroids! The day after, I wrote this story with coffee in a Disney mug in hand, rain pouring on my roof, I could still see, smell, and hear its vibrancy. I simply floated through the crowds not knowing where I’d end up next. I met, heard and witnessed a sea of talented musicians while in a state of admiration and pure awe. The Never Told Beginning Of Rock & Roll Keep A Knockin’

Charles was financially challenged, struggling; with his drum set in the pawnshop he was happy to get a hot dog and some beans. “Little Richard” quickly changed his destination taking him to Macon, Georgia to a train station at 5th, where he was instructed to listen to the rhythm the train made on the tracks.

“Keep a Knockin”, is one of many hits Charles Connor played drums on for the legendary “Little Richard,” the architect of Rock & Roll. So, if Richard is the architect, that makes Charles Connor the brick layer because his unique drum beat laid the foundation for a string of major hits for Richard setting the pattern for Rock & Roll. Charles Connor entered the scene precociously, kicking inside his mother’s womb, already drumming whenever she was around music. In January of 1935 he relieved her in New Orleans, Louisiana, destined to become an iconic drummer and songwriter. Charles speaks in an unmistakable manner tracing back to his home. With a father of Dominican descent and Creole mother, he already had the makings of a gumbo of good looks and talent. His father; William Connor, a merchant marine, singing songs, with his admiration of Dixieland marching bands and drummers like Buddy Rich, Art Blakey and Max Roach. Playing pots and pans sparked his parents to save enough to purchase him a drum set when he was only 5. Becoming a “nuisance” to the neighbors, he toned it down and practiced four to five hours daily instead on a pad. The practicing paid off. Performing at parties by age 7, he became a professional drummer by age15 playing for Professor Long Hair at the Mardi gras. Later, “Little” Richard saw him performing at a club.

So Charles created a new staccato “choochoo train” sound, with 8th notes that his drum sticks rapidly fired out with a loud backbeat. He’s the original drummer for Richard’s hard-driving rhythm & blues band, the Upsetters. His sound was copied by some of the best drummers. But they lacked that soul, or what Charles calls; “the red beans and rice.” Even Led Zeppelin’s drummer John Bonham copied the style landing a hit record, “Rock and Roll.” There was a lot of copying going on. The fancy dance moves with splits by the Godfather of Soul James Brown influenced Rolling Stone’s Mick Jagger. Then came the cape stories, that of flamboyant pianist Liberace, who influenced “Little Richard” and the wrestler, “Gorgeous George,” always making an entrance in a cape influenced what became a big part of James Brown’s act. Prince and Michael Jackson were both influenced by, “Little” Richard and James Brown, who opened the door for them. Remarkably both of those legends shared the same booking agency, exchanging gigs before social media could identify them.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE REAL MEN GONE?

We’ve got homeless children, struggling single parents and elderly parents, abandoned and no longer cared for. I was fortunate to be raised in a two parent, loving and giving home. I learned how to be a real dad to my children by following the examples my father set for me. Giving starts at home with your family, at your job (coworkers and employees,) and in your community. Once you learn the value of giving, your entire life will change for the better. Knowing how to give is what’s important, not the amount. Some of us don’t have the financial means to give to others and are surviving paycheck-to-paycheck. This is something we can all relate to. We fail to remember that the giving of our time is sometimes the most precious gift of all. When giving becomes a real part of your life, starting in your own home and community, your blessings will be much greater than your gifts. When a man takes responsibility for those around him making sacrifices of his time and energy, he is shaping a generation, bringing back the moral principals of our country. Men, let’s make it a priority to realize just how important we are to those around us, and giving back will change our lives and others. The responsibility of being a man; is taking care of your family and giving back to others who need you! Waking up everyday with a helpful and giving heart is a powerful attitude that we must all strive to adapt. If we do so, we can recapture our historical values.

Having gone from a reach of hundreds to millions in just 9 short months, people always ask me what my secret is. “The secret,” I tell them, “is networking with L.O.V.E.” What is the one thing every business needs to grow, and every influencer needs to move up in the world? People. Without customers or without a fan base you are S.O.L. (sorry, out of luck)! So, the question you should be asking yourself is, how can I connect with more people? One of the best ways is good, old fashioned networking

Here are my Secrets to Networking Success: L - Listen. Have you ever had someone try and sell you something and they did ALL the talking? How did you feel? More importantly, did you end up buying from them? I tell you what happens when someone does that to me, I tune out after about 2 minutes and try to think of an excuse to get out of the conversation. When you are networking, make sure that you take the time to listen to the other person. Ask lots of questions and get to know them BEFORE you start talking about yourself and what you have to offer. O - Open. People are much more likely to connect to and work with people who they feel are willing to be open and even slightly vulnerable. My suggestion is to pick a genuine story about something that has happened to you and how you overcame it. Ideally, you would try and tailor this around your business. Then, AFTER you listen to and get to know the person you are speaking with, find an appropriate time to share this story from your heart. V - Validate. It is important that people know that you are not only hearing what they have to say, but also that you understand what they are saying. Validating statements are a great way to do this. Using phrases like, “I understand what you are saying.” or “So what your saying is…” can go a long way in helping someone feel understood and important. And people want to work with those who understand them. E - Excitement. How many times have you met someone who you were really excited about at an event? You got their business card and placed it by your desk in a stack of other business cards when you got home with the intention to call them the next day. Only you didn’t. You didn’t call them that day, or the next, or that week at all. A couple of weeks go by and you finally call them only to find that neither of you are very excited any more. Don’t do that! Tony Robbins said, “Excitement must lead to immediate action or we will lose momentum.” Make sure and schedule some time into your week following a big networking event to make follow up calls and connect.

Writer, Producer, Publisher eZWay sat down with Scott C. Brown who is changing things in Indie Film, while becoming very recognizable in the industry. Founder of Max It Magazine, Pushing The Pen Productions and most recently: The Indie Vision Project, Scott is making a global impact for Indie filmmakers. Just back from Oregon, where he was scouting film locations and celebrating his birthday, we wanted to know what impact he is about to make to this growing industry. Tell us about Oregon. “I was raised there and have been heavily involved in the local film industry there. I’m bringing some back-home skillsets and ideas to California.” “Many filmmakers don’t realize how developed the Oregon film industry is.” How did you get started in film Scott? “My family was involved in plays at school and church, so I basically grew into it.” When was the first time you were on TV? “I was picked from the audience of a local cooking show by the host, who knew my family from frequenting his restaurant.” “His name was Horst Mager, and his restaurant Der Rhinelander is located in Portland. He cooked while talking to me. It was a surreal experience.” When did you start acting? “Several years later. I had been writing professionally at the time while producing occasional projects. What happened next? “I laid in bed realizing my mortality, which was something that was long overdue. Unable to speak or write, my thoughts basically took me over.”

I also spent time as a restaurateur.” What happened when you moved to California? “I was randomly attacked with a bottle while attending a concert of a friends band, it dramatically changed my life.” “It happened in Laguna Beach and Due to the traumatic brain injury, extensive damage to my neck shoulders and back, I was bedridden for about a month.” “I’d lost the ability to read, write or see out of my right eye. Most would say it’s a horrible thing, but I’ve always found the positive in things.” Was this any different? “No, I had nothing to show with my name on it, for I had been penning and producing for others and realized there was no legacy to leave my daughter.”

What was that like? “It was like being trapped behind a two-way mirror. I could see out, but couldn’t get anything out.” Depression? “Horrible depression! My passion for writing was quailed and a downward spiral ensued lasting a while. I fought everyday to get out of that rut.” How long did it take? “It took three years of extensive therapy, and determination to learn to read, speak and write again.” Now? “I still have issues, but I approach each day with renewed confidence towards healing, so I can help others around me.” How are you involving yourself in Indie Film? “I produce an Indie Film Magazine.” Tell our readers about it. “Max It Magazine was very different when I started it,” How so? “It was originally an entertainment publication for the riders of the Portland Light Rail, which is called Max.” Really? “Yes, It was printed and filled with short stories, games, puzzles, cartoons with a coloring section.” What eventually happened? “My partners health problems led to the inability to keep it going, so we shad to shut it down. So, I developed it into an Indie Film Site.” How did that go? “Well, it was hacked, just before the Sony hack, and I immediately became aware of how many

Indie filmmakers relied on what we did to point attention towards their projects.” Yikes, so what’d you do then? “Became the Voice for Indie Film.” How so? “I rebuilt and re-launched it, and have had continued growth ever since. It came at a hefty cost.” This was another negative turned into a positive right? “Actually, another opportunity to make a positive impact in this space” What is IndiePendence Day? “It’s a launch program for our new digital platform, Max It TV, which is set to launch July 4th.” What’s different about your platform? “Its not just a digital viewing platform, but combines viewing platforms, of Netflix and Hulu, with the Crowd Funding capabilities of Indiegogo and Kickstarter.” What will it be like? “It’s going to make an impact when it launches, with over five thousand shows. About 75% of subscription fees go directly back to the filmmakers.” Is The Indie Vision Project changing things, and how so? “The project is a very large slate of the micro-budget, and allows features and series based projects to be shot in a five-year period.” That’s old school style right? “Yes, It goes back to the old studio system where the talent and crew shared in the profits.”

How so? “Unlike most competitions, ours takes the winning script and produces it with named talent and distributes it.” “The winning Director gets to direct a funded feature or pilot from our funded slate. Both the Screenwriters and Directors are actively involved in the entire process.” What else? “They are integrated into our extensive network which helps drive their careers forward.” Who are some of the Sponsors? “Well eZWay was one of the first to come aboard and we’re grateful for it.” “The International Screenwriters’ Association and The Laemmle Theaters have both been extremely supportive, and are crucial to the success of the project.” How is the film industry responding? “We have received a significant amount of buzz, with questions on how to submit.” Really? “Yes, with many Screenwriters and Directors telling us they’ll be submitting once they do a polish on their work. We actually received our first submissions the day after we launched the site.” Was that surprising to you? “I honestly expected a longer delay, for I’m used to

La La Land Didn’t Sweep the Oscars! By David Eugene Andrews

La La Land, the musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, received a record fourteen Oscar nominations, tying two other classic movies—Titanic from the 1990’s and All About Eve from the 1950’s. Having already received the Golden Globe award for Best Picture in the Musical and Comedy category, La La Land was considered the favorite to receive the Oscar for Best Picture at the 89th Annual Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. In the biggest shock since 2015, when Steve Garvey announced the wrong contestant as winner of the Miss Universe pageant, a Price-Waterhouse accountant handed over the wrong envelope. La La Land was declared the winner for Best Picture, but in the midst of several acceptance speeches, and after more than a few late-night viewers on the East Coast turned off their TV sets, chaos ensued. A producer from La La Land, seeing the commotion off-stage, corrected the mistake. The drama Moonlight took home the Best Picture Oscar, edging out the musical. La La Land, however did not go away empty-handed. It received six wins, tying for the most trophies since Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King swept the Oscars in 2004. The final installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy received trophies in all eleven of its nominated categories. The Hurt Locker and ten other movies have now received six Oscars. Earlier in the award season, Emma Stone received a Golden Globe for her role as Mia, and Ryan Gosling similarly received a Golden Globe from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for his acting. As expected, Emma Stone her trophy from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, while Ryan Gosling faced stiffer competition. Casey Affleck, the star of Manchester by the Sea, got the Oscar trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. For readers who have not seen the movie, La La Land opens with a musical and dance number on a double-lane transition ramp from one of L.A.’s ubiquitous freeways to another. Drivers and passengers vacate their cars in a traffic jam and when the traffic finally eases, the impatient Mia flips off Sebastian, who is listening to old-style jazz in his open convertible. La La Land announces that it is “Winter,” but unlike most places above the 40th parallel, it is not uncommon (like when I am typing out this little piece in SoCal) to find temperatures in the mid 80’s. Palm trees line the wide boulevard and the audience chuckles. Clearly, La La Land is unlike anywhere else, as anyone who regularly watches the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day in nearby Pasadena can attest. As the movie progresses through the four seasons, aspiring actress Mia, who works at a coffee shop on the movie lot, uses Seb to escape a boring writer at a pool party. Mia and Seb banter back and forth in a very memorable twilight “A Lovely Night” dance and music scene filmed at Griffith Park. Damien Chazelle, who received an Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing, and Justin Hurwitz, who received Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (City of Lights), both deserve credit for bringing this movie to life. Sebastian is a purist and a jazz pianist. He takes Mia to a jazz club and shows her the ins and outs of how a jazz musician improvises by playing a riff before the band returns to the main theme. This part of the movie rang true to me. I have appreciated both jazz and blues ever since my freshman year in Portland, Oregon. Two of my roommates in the quad in our dorm worked at the small, campus radio station. Playing their favorites every night, they introduced me to the jazz of Louis Armstrong and John Coltrane, as well as the blues of BB King and the jazz-blues fusion of John Mayall. At the heart of the movie, Sebastian faces a choice when a friend offers him a job playing the keyboard in a music style that is less than pure. He puts his dream of owning a jazz club on hold. Mia, meanwhile, gets an opportunity to star in her own play, but the theatre is nearly empty and Seb arrives too late. As their budding romance evolves, Seb follows Mia to Colorado and uses his trademark loud, long honk to announce that he has arrived at her parents’ home. Her childhood bedroom has a picture of Paris on the wall, and it is in France where she will get her big break. Without giving away the ending, La La Land appeals on many levels, including the “what-ifs” of personal relationships or first loves and of career compromises and choices. La La Land did not sweep the Oscars, but this musical is destined to become a top one hundred Hollywood classic.

A review by Anura Hewagama and Bruce Richardson, of the University of Michigan, investigates the ways in which environmental factors interact with specific predisposing genetic elements to trigger diseases such as lupus, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis (A. Hewagama, et al., “The genetics and epigenetics of autoimmune diseases,” Journal of Autoimmunity, 33[1]: 3–11, 2009; 92 citations.) The November 2006 issue of Discover Magazine ran the article, “DNA Is Not Destiny: The New Science of Epigenetics” by: Ethan Watters, in which an experiment was discussed involving laboratory agouti mice, that with no more than a change in diet were prompted to give birth to young that were strikingly different in appearance and susceptibility to disease. Usually when agouti mice breed, most of the offspring are identical to the parents. The parent mice in Jirtle and Waterland’s experiment—yellow, fat, and susceptible to life-shortening disease—produced a majority of offspring that looked altogether different. These young mice were slender and mousy brown, and they did not display their parents’ susceptibility to cancer and diabetes, living to a spry old age. The effects of the agouti gene had been virtually erased. Remarkably, this transformation was achieved without altering a single letter of the mouse’s DNA.They merely changed the moms’ diet. Starting just before conception, Jirtle and Waterland fed a test group of mother mice a diet rich in methyl donors, small chemical clusters that can attach to a gene and turn it off. These molecules are common in the environment and are found in many foods, including onions, garlic, beets, and in the food supplements often given to pregnant women. After being consumed by the mothers, the methyl donors worked their way into the developing embryos’ chromosomes and onto the critical agouti gene. The mothers passed along the agouti gene to their children intact, but thanks to their methyl-rich pregnancy diet, they had added to the gene a chemical switch that dimmed the gene’s deleterious effects. “It was a little eerie and a little scary to see how something as subtle as a nutritional change in the pregnant mother rat could have such a dramatic impact on the gene expression of the baby,” Jirtle says: “The results showed how important epigenetic changes could be.” What’s eye-opening is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the epigenetic changes wrought by one’s diet, behavior, or surroundings can work their way into the germ line and echo far into the future. Put simply, and as bizarre as it may sound, what you eat or smoke today could affect the health and behavior of your great-grandchildren.

Smart TV’s are what’s hot in the tech world and they are great for baby boomers!

As we boomers start entering our golden years, we need to start thinking about the things that will make life easier as we grow older. Things that were not available to the previous generations will make living more convenient and keep us living independently longer. One way we can start moving towards a smart house, is with a smart TV. Smart TVs are televisions that are connected to your home internet and allow your television to act as the monitor for many devices and services. Remember when we were kids, we were the remote control? Well today, with my Smart TV and Amazon Echo, I can do everything from turning on the TV, controlling the volume, to changing channels with voice commands, like in the spy movies. I can access Hulu, Netflix, flickr, Amazon.com, iheart radio, and dozens of other apps or services that can be viewed on my TV screen. I can even hook up other devices like DVD players, Blueray, and cable to watch old school. We can be budget conscience, by purchasing channels a la carte on a Smart TV, just purchasing what we really watch. Who can watch 400 channels? Remember when we only had 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13? Using the big screen Smart TV as the computer monitor is also a plus. You can do everything from surf the net (in giant print), to shop online for food and frocks. We may not want to admit it, but as we mature, we need a little more help and we don’t always have that extra hand around. So we might as well get onboard and learn this technology so it will work for us, as we need a little more assistance. It’s never too late, you’re never too old!
