h;;been - assig~ed' to - the jrd Batta1 ion at l='no~rr:TIir~~,=95mrHi"------~ Carolina, for basic military training. We provide the finest basic training of any military service in the world. I assure you that their first experience with the United States Army will be both challenging and rewarding. We who are privileged to participate in preparing young men and women to be good soldiers and good citizens take' our obligations very seriously. The future of the United States Army is represented by the young peopl e entrusted to us for their basic training.

Basic training is a very intense experience. These young men and womeQ discover quickly that it is p-hysieally, mentally, and emotionally d,emanding. For all new soldiers the shock of -leaving famtlia,r st!Jrr-oundin.gs,. an.d. les-ing路 ... persona1 independence causes Significant stress. Your sql dter may become homesick for a whi 1e, might resent ha vi ng to accept 'the authority of hi s/her dri 11 sergeants, and will dislike getting up early. Yo~r soldier may be uncomfortable about lOSing his or her identity in what is perceived to be a large, impersonal organization that does not care about individuals. I hasten to point out that the Army cares very much about individual soldiers, but it will take some time - "'- ..f1o'r-~em ",:to teafize this. These aloe H-r:;nna1 leactTonS-;=Y.oo~hotitlt-notb-e~overlr--=-=-concerned about these percept ions , When soldiers complete basic training they wi 11 feel, very good about thei r total experi ence and i ndi vi dua 1 accompli shments. They will have accomplished things they did not believe possible and will have developed pride in themselves and confidence in their ability to successf'ul Iy meet tough challenges. Visitation normally is allowed on Sundays after the third week of training. Please coordinate your visits telephonically with the unit in advance to insure the availability of your soldier and understand that trainees are not author tzed to leave the battalion headquar-ters lobby. Scheduled training must necessarf ly take priority over visitation. In the event that an immediate family emergency arises which requires your loved one+s presence at home, please contact your local chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross will validate the requirement for emergency leave and coordinate with the appropriate Fort Jackson personnel to expedite the soldierls return home. -Our Battal ion does not permit soldiers to stene.aper-isheb'les such as cookies and candy in wall lockers. This policy has been adopted to preclude rodents --:---_=&fI.d tnsee'&s from infestil'lg the Hying aleas of our soldte-rs." We aS'sure you that your soldier will be provided with adequate meals which inc l udes a choice of desserts. Graduation from basic training is a most significant event and one which we sincerely hope that you can share with us. Another letter will be. sent to you about the fifth week of training containing more specific. information concerning graduation .. Please wrHe to your soldier and have him/her' ce'l l you a week prior to graduation for any changes and to ensure that they have met all the graduation reqUirements.

Your soldier's address is shown below. I encourage you to wr+te as often as you can. Because of the intensity of training and the large number of trainees trying to use a small number of phones we encourage new soldiers to write home often and inform you of their progress. Know also, that we in the Army consider the individual soldier to be our most prized and precious asset. 'If at any time you have questions about your soldier or their progress, please contact the Company Commander.-~r:....Li rst Sergeant.. _ Lam .alwa~..s at your service. -Sincerely,
