INSTRUMENTATION : Score in C [Instruments that sound at the octave or double octave are notated at their written pitch; Harmonicas are always notated at concert / sounding pitch regardless of the specific tuning of each instrument] Flute (doubling Piccolo) Oboe Clarinet in B-flat (doubling Bass Clarinet in B-flat) Alto Saxophone in E-flat Horn in F Percussion (2 Players) Total requirements: Harmonicas in D, G, and A [with 2 harmonica face holders] (note: all harmonicas should be Hohner Blues Band Harmonicas (10 holes), or similar, using Richter tuning), Almglocken (C4, D4, G4, A4), 5 Tuned Thai Gongs (C#4, D4, E4, G#4, B4), Vibraphone, Crotales (lower octave), Bongos, Triangles (high, med.), Suspended Cymbals (high, low), 2 Sizzle Cymbals, China Cymbal, Woodblock, Bass Drum, Piece of Paper, Snare Drum Percussion 1: A Harmonica and D Harmonica [with harmonica face holder], Bongos, Almglocken (C4, D4, G4, A4), Crotales (lower octave), Triangles (high, med.), Vibraphone, Suspended Cymbals (high, low), Sizzle Cymbal, China Cymbal Percussion 2: G Harmonica [with harmonica face holder], Woodblock, Bass Drum, Piece of Paper, Snare Drum, Sizzle Cymbal, 5 Tuned Thai Gongs (C#4, D4, E4, G#4, B4) Piano (with preparation) Harp 2 Violins Viola Violoncello Duration: ca. 13 minutes

PERFORMANCE NOTE: Rustling/Fluttering Sounds and Conductor Gestures: Each instrumental player should choose two “rustling/fluttering” sounds on their instrument, in any register, with any technique, playing, tapping, striking, stroking, etc. These should sounds should be wispy, effervescent, delicate, like leaves, branches, grasses, or bird feathers and should be primarily unpitched sounds, but can have some pitch/harmonics present (with the exception of the winds and brass, which should strive to create as un-pitched sounds as possible). Players should assign each chosen sound respectively to a durational/dynamic figure (Figures 13 in the Rustling/Fluttering Sounds Performance Key on the following page). In performance, players may use the durational gestures provided or improvise new ones in the style of these (striving to have a range of short-to-long fluttering sounds that cresc., dim., and swell). Players should memorize these figures for use in the sections marked by slash notation, and only when cued by the conductor. In the sections in the instrumental parts marked with slash notation, players should watch the conductor intently and the conductor will gesture in sweeping motions across ensemble (Left / Middle / Right) with their Left Hand and/or Right Hand. During these sections, players should play when gestured/pointed at by conductor, randomly choosing between Figures 1-3 in Rustling/Fluttering Sounds Performance Key each time. Players should randomly pick a figure to start on and may choose the same figure twice in a row, but not three times. If you are cued again while still playing a figure, stop and start that or a new figure. The conductor’s pointed hand in these sweeping motions is an “active” gesture and means to play when pointed at. The conductor’s closed hand is an “inactive” gesture, and does not trigger sound. The goal is for each wave of sound initiated by conductor’s sweeping gestures to ripple through the ensemble in ways that change slightly each time (with some players playing the same figure, and others playing a new figure/duration). It should be evoke the sense of wind rustling the leaves in trees in a forest. Cues: The large Cue 1, Cue 2, Cue 3 markings only apply to the instruments playing repeating, asynchronous boxed figures. These markings are used to instruct the players to either change or end the repetition of the boxed musical figures. Every player in the orchestra has these large cue numbers in their parts for their reference. The players for which these cues are not applicable are instructed to disregard them.

Rustling/Fluttering Sounds Performance Key: Gestures marked "f" means perform forte, though it may sound less. Tremolo is unmeasured. See Figs. 1-3 below.

Conductor Notation: Conductor “paints” with gestures sweeping across ensemble. Hand positions: Pointed hand/open palm: Closed palm/fist: Staff notation: Top line of staff: point to left side of ensemble Middle line: point to middle of ensemble Bottom line: point to right side of ensemble Glissando line: Slide hand from starting to end points (L to R; or R to L across ensemble)

Piano preparations: Pianist should firmly place multiple layers of Blu-Tack (or similar) putty across the strings behind the dampers in the ranges indication in the score for the duration of the piece. There should be no resulting pitch, only a timbral difference in pitch height, sounding like pitched temple blocks. If putty is not allowed on piano, two assistants can hand-dampen the selected pitches using gloves for the duration of the movement.

Harmonicas: Both percussionists are asked to double on Harmonica. The Harmonicas used should be Hohner Blues Band Harmonicas (10 holes), or similar, using Richter tuning. The players should use harmonica face holders, resting these on one’s shoulders, to hold the harmonica in the holder so as to perform it without holding it in one’s hands where indicated. Harmonica instructional diagram:

Harmonica performance instructions: • No prior expertise with harmonica playing is required. • Each Harmonica is tuned to a different diatonic key, but are notated in Concert /Sounding Pitch in the score and parts. • Players are only asked to blow chords through the harmonica, sounding in approximate ranges and with approximate pitches (as notated). • The harmonicas should be performed in either the low, middle or high ranges, as indicated in the score/parts and the enclosed diagrams. It is fine if players blow through a wider or narrower range or holes/pitches than is notated, depending on the size of one’s mouth and other performance conditions. Harmonica ranges: G Harmonica:

PROGRAM NOTE: In Between (2022) for ensemble was born out of the unique collaborative and explorative workshop experience afforded by composing for the Grossman Ensemble at the University of Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition. With this piece, I explore a newfound personal artistic space in my practice in between areas of improvisation, controlled aleatory, spatialized gestural choreography and detailed music notation. The players invent rustling, feathery sounds, the conductor “paints” gesturally through the ensemble in a music filled with chorale-like singing, meditative stillness and intricately vibrant musical textures woven through it all. The emotional inspiration for the work came from my standing in a forest near my house this fall on a late afternoon. As I stood there amidst the trees – these magisterial, quiet, monumental, and seemingly wise beings – I felt their imposing yet comforting presence, and listened to all the motion and movement that seemed to inhabit the “quiet” that surrounded me. It reminded me of a visit I made to my friend’s property in Vermont a few years prior, on an invitation to come and “meet” the trees that are so dear to him. He told me how at his age he now speaks with them and hoped they might speak to me. This has all been a starting point that unlocked my imagination in surprising ways, creating within and between spaces of stillness and activity and listening and singing. In Between for ensemble was commissioned by the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition for the Grossman Ensemble, and is dedicated to the Grossman Ensemble, conductor Timothy Weiss, and director and founder Augusta Read Thomas, with admiration and gratitude.
