Performance Note: Movements I and IV: Blu-Tack: Firmly place diagonally across the strings (behind the dampers) so as to mute the string at the point of the 5th partial (placement can be approximate). It should be muted so that there is no longer any pitch sounding when played. It is best if at least three layers of putty are placed on top of one another in order to achieve the proper muted effect.

Pencils (movement I only): should be placed on the strings, behind the dampers, covering the range indicated. To minimize movement of the pencils, they should be bundled in groups of three, with tape. One end of the bundled pencils can be taped to the sounding board. The use of pencils reference the sound of the cimbalom, a favorite instrument of György Kurtág.

Gesture: physical gesture is especially important in these outer two movements.

In the first movement, the pianist should give the impression as if the “quarrel” between the two outer voices is being improvised in real time—the two characters reacting to each other.

The left arm should not move registers (between the outer two staves) too early so as to foreshadow the next note in the conversation. Sudden, quick arm movements between registers are best suited for the character of the quarrel.

In the fourth movement, the pianist physically embraces the instrument through spiraling gestures that slowly expand over the full range of the piano. The movement alludes to Kurtág’s “Flowers we are… (embracing sounds)” for piano four-hands, another work that he typically performs with Márta Kurtág. Focusing on the intimacy of gesture, that work is rife with hand crossings, so that the two pianists appear to entwine arms in an embrace. My movement alludes to this, alternating the spiraling melodies between hands so that the pianist places herself in her own embrace.

Program Note: In Dialogues, I explore various types of musical conversations over the course of four movements. You will hear dialogues between musical characters and personalities and between my influences and myself. Before composing this piece, I spent months writing my doctoral dissertation on the topic of homage in the music of Hungarian composer György Kurtág. Dialogues is the first work I composed after finishing my dissertation and not surprisingly it is a dialogue with Kurtág’s music and the influence his music has had on me.

The first movement, “Quarrel (Hommage à György Kurtág),” alludes to Kurtág’s composition “Quarrel” from his Játékok series. My movement builds on the basic gestures of Kurtág’s musical quarrel but adds a third element to the conversation—a musical object that the two characters argue over. The second movement, “An Encounter,” is a conversation between two characters and the pianist’s two hands. Over the course of the movement the two characters exchange ideas and motives.

By the end, the characters have exchanged roles and switched hands, only to quickly return to their original places by the final measures. The third movement is, as its title suggests, a “Lament.” The final movement, “An Embrace (Hommage à György Kurtág),” alludes to Kurtág’s “Flowers we are… (embracing sounds)” for piano four-hands. Like Kurtág’s piece, the movement is a gesture of embrace, both physical and musical. Dialogues was composed for pianist Hui Wu. - Eric Nathan
