Heart of Hastings Community Land Trust is brave enough to tackle the biggest challenges surrounding, housing, social inclusion and empowerment. We are a coalition of local, on-the-ground energy, national expertise and committed backers, proving a new and highly credible model for community-led regeneration – a model aligned with central government housing policy and with potential for national impact.

WHO WE ARE Heart of Hastings is brings together the Bottom Up Development Team (BUD), directors and staff. Grassroots leadership: Our BUD team are at the front of every decision-making process in the organisation. They’re all local, all shareholders and all committed to engaging and involving others in every step of the process. Directors: Our directors are chosen by our members and are dedicated to making progressing our ideals and supporting bottom up development. Staff: Heart of Hastings employs local workers who are committed to making socially driven investment a reality. Local people: We employ a Community Organiser to engage and involve people living in Ore Valley and White Rock.

In the White Rock area we are harnessing the power of collective social investment to purchase underused or run down properties, renovate them using local tradespeople and then return them to the market at rates which reflect the average local income for Hastings, and which are then capped at the rate of inflation guaranteeing affordability forever.
Heart of Hastings is delighted to have just acquired 12 Claremont to turn into artists’ livework spaces, a gallery for Project Artworks and a Community Base.
The Community Land Trust (CLT) has been designed to become a “people’s organisation” – owned and shaped by its shareholding members. It is democratic because every member has one vote, no matter how many shares they hold. We hope that 1,000 or more people might choose to become co-owners of the CLT. The equity funds raised through the shares help the CLT to manage and make progress with the two projects in White Rock and Ore Valley.
TACKLING POVERTY & DERELICTION FROM THE BOTTOM UP Ore Valley Community-led regeneration Our vision for the Ore Valley combines traditional community self-build practice with innovative building approaches and communityled regeneration techniques to transform a 40-year derelict industrial site into a thriving, community-owned, permanently affordable eco-village. Using our innovative Bottom Up Development (BUD) approach we aim to deliver 76 homes, 100 jobs and lasting regeneration with wider benefits for the whole town.

Organisation Workshop: Regeneration: We bring money into In Ore Valley our plans are to develop a derelict site into up to the local economy 76 affordable homes. We will recruit and keep it here by 100+ local people give them a chance employing local to build their own opportunities through an organisation workshop workers, trades and (OW). The OW method is a way of craftspeople. giving excluded people the tools and ability to self-organise and achieve concrete results.

The Heart of Hastings OW will involve building a warehouse using Modern Methods of Construction, under the direction of ZedFactory, award winning, eco conscious architects. Eventually the warehouse will be converted into a community facility and enterprise hub.
