World Epilepsy Day
World Epilepsy Day, also known as International Epilepsy Day is a recognized event in the world that celebrates epileptic individuals on the second Monday of February each year. The day is celebrated to primarily raise awareness of epilepsy, discuss what it is, how it can be treated, and how the treatments can reach the people across over 130 countries.
Epilepsy is a condition of the neurons that can case seizures. You must have heard of epileptic seizures. The severity of these seizures vary from person to person, and sometimes, it’s untreatable. That’s why it’s important that individuals suffering from it are treated with more love and care. This is one of the reasons the world choose r celebrate World Epilepsy Day.
As a caregiver, it’s essential that you learn how to show empathy towards the epileptic, reassuring them that they can live a normal life like every other normal person out there. This can mean a lot to them, especially children.
THINGS TO YOU SHOULD DO ON WORLD EPILEPSY DAY
• On this day, you should gently remind an epileptic patient to take medication as scheduled, eat well, exercise, and above all, sleep adequately. • They shouldn’t be treated differently or shown excess sympathy. Just like other comorbidity, it can be managed with lifestyle changes. • As a caregiver, join or create support groups to meet like minds with similar experiences on how to take care of epileptic patients. • Practicing mindfulness and helping the patient to do the same to reduce anxiety and develop a healthy mind. • Be their pillar of support at all times. • Take care of yourself as much as you take care of the patient.
