MILK : adjustable desk by the danish Holmris le bureau réglable du danois Holmris
Quarterly/Trimestriel - n°10 • Janvier - Février - Mars 2008 / January - February - March 2008 - 5 €
Edito Intelligence serving the Object ? This is what we wanted to offer you for this 1st issue of year 2008. Beginning with our cover presenting MILK desk by Danish Soren Kjaer : it is functional, with a simple form, classy, everything that is not useful outside being integrated into very ingenious systems, its construction is extremely accurate, and in addition, it supports the most optimistic ergonomics for a workstation. So we hope that it paves the way and that this will boost our creators : Beautiful,Well, Good : it works ! More intelligent imagination, in this issue, with the Focus on disability mainstreaming, an exemplary resolve from users and an unwavering belief from ergonomists and companies that have been able to achieve these projects, not a “ missing link ” in achieving it bravo ! Finally the “ Sitting-standing ” seat model comes in force, having already won the Scandinavian countries, it settles everywhere, but maybe there is a need to inject in it a little emotion in the design to become the unavoidable solution to our mobility in the workplace. Two more good news, the first is the arrival on the market of a new french furniture publisher U: NIK, born of a meeting between the architect and interior designer Jean-Louis Berthet and Marc Cauterman. The second is the creation for the 1st time in Paris in November 2008, in partnership with Ergonoma Journal, of a space with the largest number of products, equipment, furniture and services contributing to workplace ergonomics and work wellness, the “ Ergonomics Village ” in the 22nd international exhibition EXPOPROTECTION. Be Man living in symbiosis with its “ work tools ” in a perfect wellness environment, we look forward to present the news to you in future issues.

* Giroflex, Switzerland: Workshop collapsible seat

Handicap at the Workstation “… Restore workers’ physical and mental health and their ability to work ” Alain WISNER * * One of the founders or french ergonomics, president of SELF from 1969 to 1971. By Nicole PEYRONNET-LE MARTIN
Integration, Adaptation, Taking into account and Preventing Photo Michel : Sophie after/Sophie après…
Let’s accept disability as a difference among others because of the lower efficiency of certain functions, and build professional life places that take into account these differences. Let’s find products, services, articles and materials corresponding to their users’ expectations. Solutions exist, it is just a matter of establishing jointly a precise set of specifications, which, beyond the material aspect, should also take into account the cognitive aspect of the workstation user. This “ focus ” has been produced in cooperation with Michel ANTOINE ergonomist (l’ESPACE ERGONOMIQUE, Metz France), Danièle Darnault Occupational Therapist-Ergonomist (CREE, Grigny France), Daniel Lazennec, corporate trainer for behavioral and postural education and optimization of working positions (Cabinet ERGHOM, Mourenx France), Jean-Eric PIDANCET (EASYMOOV, Besançon France), and Nicolas PFENNIG (AZERGO, Seyssuel France).
A PHYSICAL DISABILITY DOES NOT MAKE A PERSON “ UNABLE ” It is also important to compensate the diseases that to prevent them, a physical disability does not make a person “ unable ”, and a disabled worker will be as effective as a valid one with a suitable workstation. Ergonomic principles is as important for the comfort of life for everyone as there are paramount in preventing poor posture. They take a stronger dimension when concerning people weakened by various diseases not allowing them to develop the physical compensation that the ablebodied can implement. Greater autonomy is paramount and is a physiological deep need with direct consequences : - A decrease in the physical and mental burden (translated by fatigue) allows a number of constraints related to the disability to be removed. - A direct positive impact on the work undertaken and a decrease in fatigability of the employee. - A valuation of the individual through better success in the activity. - A help with job keeping. Ergonomic setting up of workstations promote equal opportunity, help to keep jobs, and contribute to the integration and job adaptations. All ages and all segments of the population are concerned, from the child in a learning situation at school to older workers whose retirement will become increasingly late (given demographic trends). The right tools and furniture are not the only factors to be taken into account for the workstation, but they contribute greatly to the well-being at work. In the tertiary sector, for example, basic equipment are the seat and the
desk. Knowing that the best posture is a frequent change of position, knowing also that the height of the work plan should vary depending on the task performed and also in terms of the user morphology, the ergonomic answer is an adjustable work seat together with a height adjustable desk. Azergo therefore offers a complete range of equipment that can be used to build a more healthy working environment around the worker, favouring position changes, space gain and workplace ergonomics. “ Adaptation ” range allows the company to organize its workstations for disabled workers, and therefore to win in three ways : - The hiring of a productive employee, - The funding of the necessary equipment by social funds, - The reduction of financial contributions when failing to employ disabled workers .
A PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL EXAMPLE PROPOSED BY MICHEL ANTOINE, L’ESPACE ERGONOMIQUE : “ SOPHIE works in SDIS 54 (French institution) network computer-service : born without arms, rebel since her youth, she has thrown away all her equipment since the age of 15 and uses her feet and her flexibility to work, drive, cook, etc. She was working on a standard 73cm high workstation and was sitting on a high designer seat with actuator on skates. Sophie was complaining of back pain, low back pain and neck that became disabling. Continuation p. 5

WHEN DISABILITY ENRICHES THE THOUGHT AND EXTENDS THE “ USABILITY ” OF A WORKPLACE A grid of reflection based on CREE experience: how to normalise the work of a back pain suffering operator. Objective : to limit disabling back pain, following an herniated disc surgery, knowing that the operator does mostly office work, including a lot of time spent on the telephone. Problems to be solved : Inability to sit for an hour. How to allow the operator, according to its own wishes, to keep changing postures while maintaining continuity of its operations, at the same time preventing back pain. Proposed solutions : Variable height adjustable from 650 mm to 1300 mm work desk which allows the operator to work sitting or standing, as he wants while continuing his activity on the desktop. The work plan can be set electrically instantly with a simple press of a button under the edge of the plateau. The “ Tilto ” seat is equipped with an inflatable lumbar support and an “ extra ” high backrest providing a good back position up to the neck. This seat is also equipped with a tilting system (rocking chair), that can be blocked, to tilt the whole of the seat backward or Photo CREE forward whenever the operator wishes it. And the settings are many : independent seat tilting adjustment, seat depth adjustment, backrest tilting adjustment and backrest and neck support height adjustment. This seat meets perfectly the operator’s requirements: to modify very easily and frequently his sitting position. For this reason, the Tilto seat was chosen without handbrake because the operator does not want and does not need it. And at any time, if the user so wishes, he can also use for certain activities like the following: filling envelopes for a mailing, another seat with wheels allowing a sitting / standing position. The work plan is then positioned at an intermediary height. Result : creation of a “ multi-operator ” workstation. The operator works full time, and the study of his pain problems, has allowed to create a shared work position for 2 part-time workers. The multiple possible adjustments, make a “ multi-user ” and interdisciplinary perfect fit for everyone. And this workplace is also suitable for a disabled person installed in a wheelchair since no side leg impedes the passage under the work plan. Disability is sometimes congenital, often accidental, sometimes temporary and unavoidable in an aging workplace population. So the thinking it leads to pursue allows everyone to improve the functionality of the workstation. In this case, we are in total agreement with Daniel Lazennec when he says “ Handicap is an impulse for all ”
HANDICAP ? This name, bringing together abnormal states, has us think about our individual capabilities. Capacities necessarily limited in some field for each, we are often outside of standards either by our physical, cognitive, relational skills or absence of skills, or - and, in an instant by our general condition influenced by a inability to manage our physical, emotional or cognitive potential. Are we all capable of producing such action when our sensitive potential is asleep because it is not stimulated ? That puts us all in a relativity which allows us to be in a more humane relationship with people with “ normalised ” disabilities. Assets for all With this insight, the look on oneself and others change. The complementarity of differences appears as a reality and as an opportunity.
This becomes a driving force in a group of people (corporate or otherwise). The law of 2005 on the inclusion of so-called “ disabled persons ” represents an opportunity for personal and global enrichment. Working with people who have constraints in a sensitive or cognitive domain asks for a human, organizational and material adaptation, yes. Thanks to various constraints due to “ disabilities ”, sprang innovations which everyone enjoys today… and that many of us would relent not to use them any longer : the remote control, the voice/writing converter, lower sidewalks, sound equipped traffic lights… The role of occupational doctors This new law (in France) is for them an additional workload combined with another law which, lately, has profoundly altered their work organization. So their excessive workload leaves them little time to deal with each issue as they wish. Issues concerning handicap analysis and solutions take time. They do not have the time to seek available solutions. In their new organization, ergonomists just bring elements to form a multidisciplinary approach. To evaluate the situation of a person with a so-called disability obviously requests multiple skills. In the field they are often deficient. Example of skills at the service of a company A bad sighted person, suffering from induced vertebral problems, but with a potential for communication very suitable for a phone customer relationship could not implement this potential, because the tools used were not at all suitable. It was necessary to implement the combined skills of osteopathy, physiotherapy, ergonomics, ergometrics, psycho-cognitive elements and psychosocial factors analysis, supplemented by innovation, organizational support, working positions advice and relief techniques. All of this dynamics allows the person to use his skills for its own development, its social and work satisfaction and that of his employer, through customers happy to listen to such a knowledge.
Here are some rules for choosing one’s workstation according to EASY’MOOV which distributes in France BANSBACH Easy Motion hydraulic cylinders range created specifically for designers to conceive ergonomic dynamic applications, where there is little room for components such as electric actuators, or when the bulks are too large. Electric actuators and furniture legs CONSET range allow turnkey solutions and economical furniture series, whether for one piece or large volumes. The French law does not require a workstation with electric adjustment, but it requires to be able to change positions while working, and to work in a position suiting our morphology. All European Union countries must meet the standard EN 527-1 (Tables and desks, Part 1, Objective). There are a number of guidelines and opinions regarding proper installation of desk/seat. But all experts are in agreement about the need to change often one’s working position. Once the seat height has been adjusted, the work plan should be adjustable in height so that the screen and mouse are also at the correct height. The depth of the work plan must be sufficient (at least 80 cm) so that the screen is located at optimal distance of the eyes, and that the whole forearm lies on the desk surface, as well as for allow wrists and forearms to rest in front of the keyboard. The work plan should be wide enough to permit the laying of objects (documents, accessories) on either side of the keyboard ; the desk structure should enable legs to be able to move freely. For extensive readings, the ability to tilt the work plan can be an advantage.

ANOTHER MEANINGFUL EXAMPLE PROPOSED BY MICHEL ANTOINE, L’ESPACE ERGONOMIQUE : Marylin, 27, was the victim of a road accident in moped at 13. “ Addicted ” to mechanics, she holds a French milling technical diploma and has been hired by company CARBONE LORRAINE, high-tech manufacturer for TOTAL, AIRBUS, etc. The company management, as well as its dynamic nurse, made every effort to adapt the site to include a person in a wheelchair : it was necessary to organize the access to the workstation at more than one metre from the ground, to build a toilet and a shower, because this is a messy industry, and graphite dirts everything. The company installed a lift so that Marilyn may have access to her workstation and also down to the toilet. This bathroom / toilet has been created for Marilyn : there she can wash, change, and enjoys a clean wheelchair to leave the facility. The challenge was to provide Marilyn maximum comfort when she works on her drilling wheel. She did not want a fixed seat, because she must be able to carry multiple micro-movements at her workplace. Michel Antoine has chosen for her a very stable and mobile seat on an actuator, with soft casters adapted to the antislip ground : a RH ACTIV seat with a seat depth adjustment to balance Marilyn when she bends forward and a high reinforced backrest (the front of the seat and the top of the file are in reinforced leather on a thick foam). The footrest is set just below the level of the drilling wheel support (angle chosen by Marilyn after testing). Marilyn often leaves her seat to work on a second drilling wheel equipped with the same seat, her wheelchair being used to commute between the two posts. Marilyn also has a bracket to manipulate parts. The workshop, and these posts as they are equipped show that a motivated industrial company can accommodate people in wheelchairs.

p. 8, ergonoma journal, Janvier • Février • Mars 2008 / January • February • March 2008
Suite p. 9

- by the french TechnoFirst, ANR technology applies to hearing protection for the people working in VERY NOISY environments. It is based on a miniaturized electronics, situated inside the shell of the helmet. It is electronically connected to a small microphone that picks up ambient noise and to a small speaker that generates the anti-noise close to the ear so as to reduce significantly the noise that reaches the eardrum. Mitigation hearing protection with ANR is between 30 and 45 dBA depending on the ambient noise. The technology allows ANR mitigating exceptionally low frequencies that generate fatigue, stress, headaches and body general disorder of metabolism, and improving the word understanding, because the frequencies of speech (1000 to 8000 Hz ) are no longer masked by low frequencies (63 to 1000 Hz). This technology eliminates the sense of isolation and allows long-term intervention in very noisy environments. TechnoFirst offers the advantage of being able to adapt its communication helmets to all types of needs (any type of communication that already exists at the customer’s). Example: Helmet adaptation to any type of walkie-talkies (Motorola, Vertex, Icom, 5 etc.). www.technofirst.com
Casque antibruit actif NoiseMaster « ANR ».

Sitting-standing, a reactive sitting ! • Choose a cushioning approximately 2 to 3 cm (1 inch) thick. Have a chair that can fold and that can be stored when the workspace is limited. • Ensure that the chairs provide a good lumbar support. • Provide a rest chair when the work may only be carried out standing.
According to 2003 Sumer survey, 27.2% of French employees work standing (or stalling) over 20 hours per week. This figure rises to 49% among factory workers. These data reflect very varied work situations. The Scandinavian countries are still far ahead in terms of sitting-standing positions. A few years ago, sit-stand seats were more for the workshops and they were mostly made of wood ; but today the sit-stand seat conquers offices : buttock rests become mellower.
But there are intermediate postures that combine the two and you can be standing resting your buttocks at worst on a table edge, but the best solution is what is called “ sittingstanding ” seats, which allow a part of the body's weight to be no longer supported by the legs while preserving the natural back curvature and that in addition facilitate the transition from upright to sitting posture.
One should be able to work standing or sitting in his own way, which is what advocates INRS (French Work Safety Organization) but to do this one must ensure that the seat is at least 40 doc inrs cm large(about 16 inches). • Choose a backrest espousing the shape of the back, vertically and horizontally. Use a seat covered with a waterproofbreathing and non-slip fabric.
The mobility of these seats allows to avoid still posture that presents a health risk.

Saddle chairs ? : the Salli solution Two-part saddle seat advantageous to genital health According to a study conducted at the University of Kuopio, traditional way of sitting increases testicular temperature up to 37°C – that’s 4°C more than the optimal value. The rise in scrotal temperature is known to affect sperm quality and fertility. ,Lately, male infertility and erectile dysfunctions have increased along with the time we spend sitting. Salli Systems is the only chair manufacturer in the world to have taken male anatomy into consideration while designing their seat. The patented two-part seat is well ventilated, and by using it men can avoid harmful pressure to the root of the penis, a problem which can lead to erectile dysfunctions.
Studying sitting pressure Different type of seats cause different type of pressure. The division of pressure can easily be tested with a pressure mat and a simple computer www.salli.com program that shows the amounts of pressure applied to the mat in different colors. As men sit on a traditional office chair, the pressure concentrates mostly on the thigh and buttock muscles, but also partly on the genitalia. One-part saddle chairs with high fronts apply a notable amount of pressure on the male reproductive organs. On a two-part seat most of the pressure is correctly on the sitting bones, thus making it the healthiest option for anyone who has to sit for longer periods of time.
Chaises-selles ?

The work analysis : a lively approach that evolves through new situations development Interview by Nicole Peyronnet-Le Martin at SELF Congress in Saint Malo on September 6, 2007.
The French Language Ergonomists Society joins FEES ? During SELF 42nd Congress, which took place in Saint MALO, and the 2007 theme of which was “ Products and Services Ergonomics “, Michel NEBOIT said to ERGONOMA Journal announcing the coming of SELF within the FEES (Federation of European Ergonomics Societies). “ We could have entered more sooner and by the ‘front door’, but my predecessors were not sure that, by adhering to FEES, French Ergonomics would not lose its soul. Photo Ergonoma Michel NEBOIT, It seemed at the time that it was only a lobbying Président of SELF force. But today we have had all the assurances to make sure that we shall work together to develop European ergonomics specifics. I know Peter ROOKMAAKER (President of FEES) well and I trust him that we shall work together in the direction that we want : things will come naturally this way. "
How is SELF doing in terms of recruitment ? “ Like for all associations, it is fluctuating, although it is heartening in this Congress to meet young fellow ergonomists serving or just finishing graduation, we still miss a lot of them. The SELF has nearly 600 members : ergonomists, occupational physicians, working conditions engineers, who contribute to working conditions improvement and products and services designing. Work analysis is a very lively approach, evolving, diversifying and seeking to take into account the new work situations (working alone, telecommuting, collective work, service activities, …), to understand them, to analyze their failures (health and safety problems), but above all, to remedy the situation. “ For Michel NEBOIT, “ ergonomics contributes to risk assessment, but also to work situations design. And the theme of the Congress this year is perhaps a little confusing for ergonomists that are more interested in cognitive. But we are working together to develop ergonomics in order to improve occupational health for better productivity performance and I am confident that this approach is consensual and will encourage prospective members to join us. ”
« To well negociate the society change it is our duty » ERGONOMA Journal (EJ) met with Mr JeanBaptiste OBENICHE following a conference with social partners about ' committing for an active age management ' and quite naturally we asked him
what he thought about this age management in today work world ?
Photo ANACT Jean-Baptiste OBENICHE director of Anact (French National Agency to Improve Work Conditions)
Mr. Jean-Baptiste OBENICHE * (JBO) : “ ANACT role is to provide assistance within companies, in order to facilitate the adjustment of the functions to the ages and vice versa. But there is also the question of organizing and upgrading the workstations to prevent mental or physical wear. We can assist companies in establishing a GPEC ” (Jobs and Skills provisional management), but the most important thing for me is that, regardless of the age, each worker feels well in his/her function, his/her value being recognized. The well-being inside the company goes through a professional development perspective, the employee needs to feel that he/she is not an anonymous and interchangeable element in the company, it is what counts to be efficient, and you will see: the symptoms of ill-being, the bad stress will decrease and the community as a whole will gain. It is essential that the employees’ working conditions and life quality are undeniable for companies to be attractive ”
EJ : Will you imprint your own momentum to ANACT ? JBO : “ ANACT does not lack dynamism, my predecessor Henri ROUILLAULT organized such a network in the territory that our actions are fully relayed and that any company or territory initiative to improve their work life quality is going up fast and is looked at in order to try to get from it the best education for the greatest number. I am actually a “field” man, but I was and still am a man of reflection and records even though I appreciate responsiveness. I try to work for tomorrow, because the stakes are enormous, my priority is to ensure that work is seen as a source of growth for the employee and an added value for the company. The faster companies to integrate this will be better equipped for global competition. Human capital being an actor to company performance, this is the relity. Today’s employee is forewarned, informed and full of expectations, his desires above and beyond mere wages have evolved. I think of my children who will evolve in a little over a decade in this world : for themselves and those of their generation, we must negotiate the society change, it is our duty. We must do everything possible to move from a distrusting society to a trusting society. “ NPLM. * Jean-Baptiste Obéniche, 42, graduated from Eslsca, was from 1996 to 2000, director of a local branch of the ANPE (French Employment Agency) in Montpellier before becoming adviser in charge of human resources at the Directorate-General of ANPE. Promoted in 2002 as deputy director for Paris ANPE, he was called in 2004 by Laurent Hénart, Secretary of State for the professional integration of young people, as an adviser. In the same capacity, he was incorporated in 2005 in the Prime Minister Office, Dominique de Villepin, in charge of employment. He also held a salesperson job in the private sector.

Work spaces installation From gray material … to handing over the site By Jean-Alexis TANCHOU - Opéra Ergonomie
Ordinarily the ergonomist, or more broadly the ergonomics consultancy, within its work spaces installation mission, limits oneself to bringing a specific expertise input to the customer. An intellectual work, most often framed by INRS (French Health at Work Organization) guidelines, guidelines focused on the structuring of the future workplace with as a main target the integration and addressing of major constraints in the table below : Noise
Lighting
Ventilation (hot/cold),
Electricity
Fire associated risks
Ground quality
Signage of premises
Handling
Storage
Sanitary facilities
Cleaning
Map of circulations
A structured and perfectly mature methodology enables ergonomists, real company consultants, to support managers willing now to adjust their premises by taking into consideration the human factor in the production process. Considering the human factor is ensuring that the machine does not block because of an improper anticipation of the constraints that affect and hurt operators.
From consulting to the field : actions ! What about the accompaniment on the field ? Where does the ergonomics consultancy expertise stop ? Is it simply an advisory, who has to make an inventory and improve the future environment ? To take a picture and view it with the customer ? We are not paid for that. Today’s companies want factual results. For us, the expertise of an ergonomics consultancy as part of a mission to develop work spaces has another name : assistance in project management. By going in the field, ergonomists feel current situations, they project themselves into the future with the operators. The analysis of the existing situation is indeed critical to give the broad outlines of the study. Each company actor will be met and interviewed. The brakes and levers that accompany the change will then be identified. From this phase comes the real launch of the project. The design phases.
From paper to 3D. Our approach is somewhat different, because it allows to see how the future premises will look. How ? We integrate imaging in working groups results presentation. Imaging today with its precision allows to model precisely planned changes. They offer various working groups members, up to the Management and especially to members of the CHSCT (French employees health at work committees), to “ touch ” and “ project ” themselves concretely in the future. By integrating complementary skills, an ergonomics consultancy is now able to provide the final customer with futuristic tools. This is true for imaging and for setting up patterns made with “ Autocad ” type software.
Offering the best is good, it’s better to find it ! Once this stage is completed, the consultancy helps the client to choose suppliers. For that it will draft a suppliers consulting list. Beware : he only submits Photo Opéra Ergonomie to its customer the broadest possible that needs meeting suppliers panel. Thereafter, the consultancy traders will begin a phase of negotiation with the selected suppliers, bringing the best products at the best prices. Offering the best is to be able to find it. Why an ergonomics consultancy should it not good at bargaining especially when the range of its capacities is widened by its sales people’s ?
Work begins now. From there, brakes are only levers, ergonomic integration constraints difficulties are cleared, wiped away, the installation work can begin. It is not finished, you say ? From now on feet have to go into the cement. The ergonomics consultancy now represents the customer on site. It oversees the site and directs it. This is not another job. This is a natural extension of the expertise provided to the Photo Opéra Ergonomie (Site follow-up) customer. How do you explain to a manager that you have the competence to design changes if you are unable to conduct works in “ real life ” ? So day after day, from on-site meeting to on-site meeting, the consultancy becomes the linchpin of its customer. He sees the imaging taking shape and becoming reality. Then the works are completed and it is time for the consultancy works manager to bring together all the professions and to proceed to works reception in front of the customer. The painters, electricians and other tilers gone, the works manager remains to receive equipment ordered by the customer from his suppliers. He receives them and with the help of the consultancy’s sales people, controls them. Together, they are then relayed by the consultancy’s ergonomist who positions them on the work area following the planned layout. It is now time for the various working groups, who since the beginning of the adventure took part in the change definition and in the management of workspaces to come and visit the new venue. Being present on the works site is what experiences the most the necessity of expanding the spectrum of skills of an ergonomics consultancy. It must adapt to the company needs. For this kind of service, the ergonomics consultancy should be able to provide a triple expertise, at the same time ergonomics, commercial and works site piloting. How otherwise anyone who would ignore the the field constraints could discuss developing work spaces ?

Clean air, beneficial water, beautifully preserved nature, sports and recreation, culture and entertainment… are the ingredients of the anti-stress cocktail to taste without restraint for a guaranteed resourcing. Thermalism is something of an institution in Cauterets and has made considerable contributions to the reputation and the development of the village as evidenced by the pervasive architectural heritage. The thermal waters, particularly abundant and rich in minerals and trace elements, lead to sources close to the 3 buildings that are the Baths. These natural and beneficial waters have been known for millennia to guarantee their effectiveness in rheumatism treatment, as well as respiratory tracts (ORL). You can combine ORl and rheumatology care. Among the treatments offered: - respiratory physiotherapy: individual respiratory reeducation, postural drainage in individual rooms provided by a physiotherapist ; - mechanical rachialgies: back pain, sciatalgies, essential backache; - periarticular pathology: shoulder pathology, simple tendinitis. During your stay, you will be accompanied by a team of professionals responsible for your comfort and well-being. The water comes from two natural sources wells, they are sulphated, alkaline, deep hyperthermal. They emerge at a natural temperature of 45 to 60° with a complex mineralization rich in trace elements and silica. A full range of cares adapted to each treatment for adults and children is offered from February to November. www.thermesdecauterets.com
