« In Neapolitan, the word “ to work ” does not exist. One says “ fatigare ”. » Roberto Rossellini But it is also said that man was not “ built ” to be sitting, how surprising ! The cowherd who milks a cow, the ploughman on his tractor, the schoolboy behind his table, the researcher before his test bench, the technician in his workshop, the webmaster, the administrative person, the writer, the journalist behind his workstation etc., are all sitting. We all sit unaware of the type of seat on which we spend such lengthy periods of time. We then search for a seat in public transports, after work, the armchair, the kitchen or even at the dining room chairs are also to be found. We have reached a point in which we are increasingly becoming ever more urban and sedentary. Rural people, have exchanged painfulness liberating mechanization for the stress of the ever changing farm yields. The extended sitting stations gave birth to a range of mechanical pathologies, strongly degrading our enthusiasm for work up till discomfort. This is why this issue will try to bring light to some truths on how best to optimize the manner in which we use seating mechanism within the work environment . Be it with dorsal support offering “ permanent contact ”, be it with the maximum comfort of a tilting mechanism, or making use of an automated mechanism that synchronises seat and backrest adaptation to the user’s movements. All seats offer us adjustments options, allowing for a greater protection of the intervertebral discs, essential for a good support of our spinal column. After a time when the “ heavy ” design neared a “ prothesist ” aid rather than been a naturally integrated element of our environment, manufacturers of work seats helped by occupational doctors and ergonomists, are now calling upon famous designers and architects, to reconciled health and aesthetics. As good evidence of the results, you shall find some images of work seats, starting with the front cover, selected by ERGONOMA Journal editors. We wish that our choice, a non exhaustive one, allows you to give to each employee the comfort and safety one deserves for a more harmonious way of life at work.
On dit “fatigare”.

The truth about work seats : « The design of a good chair is transparent in the means of efficiency : the user should not bother to find out what mechanism or handle should be used to give physical or mental variation. » Tone Petrelius Exclusive file ERGONOMA Journal january 2007, written in cooperation with : TONE PETRELIUS (TP) : Chief ergonomist at TCO Development Institute (Sweden). Ergonoma Journal: How did the principles applied to the conception of work seats evolve in time? TONE PETRELIUS (TP) : Third Millenium work chairs for office use must to a very high extent match the user´s needs for physical as well as mental variation. The traditional work chair was stable and secure, offering limited possibilities to change work postures. We can now see the results of a long term development towards a variety of functions, dimensions and designs. The market offers aim to present sitting solutions for dynamic variation. More efforts are needed to make these solutions much easier to understand and much easier to use.
that the seat is accepted as a current work equipment only since about 150 years. It is true that, when compared with the seats of the past, today’s work seats present some conspicuous differences, however, the fundamental conception and the characteristic features are preserved. Up until now, in many companies, the design and upholstery of a seat correspond unfortunately to its owner’s hierarchical position. And also unfortunately the seats are not always chosen according to their users’ concrete needs.

These standards, which must be adapted as a general rule to all equipment, must also be fulfilled by the ergonomic seats. I will explain further what this means in my next answer.

position is in fact a compromise, that means it has advantages and disadvantages, and this is true for all types of seats. Indeed, the man was not born to remain seated and his physiology is not conceived to stay immobile in any position for long periods of time. For a long time, it was believed that it would be possible to eliminate the drawbacks of the sitting position by designing “ the ideal seat ” and by maintaining “ the optimal sitting posture ”. However, many scientific studies which have been available for years bring evidence that the negative consequences of the sitting position on the human body – the load which is harmful for the spine and has negative consequences on intervertebral disks, on the ligamentary system and on the muscles of the back, the rounded back resulting from a long held “ comfortable ” sitting position, the compression of the abdominal organs, notably of the breathing and the digestive tract, painful contractions in the nape and the head, often accompanied by diffuse pains, the atony and in many cases the reduction of the abdominal, pectoral and hip musculature – can be avoided neither by THE seat nor by ANY sitting posture. It has been recently acknowledged that the negative consequences of the continuous sitting position for the human body can only be avoided by changing the posture, that means by movement. The elementary fundamental principle for the creation of an ergonomic seat is to encourage movement. A good seat must encourage a dynamic sitting position as much as possible. The means to reach this objective (mechanical tilting devices or synchronous devices, active movement modules, by opening the angle between the torso and the knees so as to approach the standing posture) are less important than the fact that the employees use this possibility of movement. The best seat is pointless as long as a man doesn’t look for the possibility of movement instead of hoping to find THE ideal seat – hoping that it will spare him the negative consequences of the sitting position. Another fundamental principle is the fact that the seat must accommodate as many people as possible and this means about 90% of the population. This means that it must be suitable for a woman 1,51 metre high as well as for a man 1,91 metre high. It is important that the adjustment means are multiple because the height is in relation to the length of the back, as well as the length of the thighs and calves, etc. It is indispensable for an ergonomic work seat to correspond to these requirements.
DL : The first basic principle : Let’s consider a human being as we would a
house : The first necessity is to give it good foundations. This is represented by the feet, legs, thighs and pelvis. It is necessary to position the center of the foundation (the pelvis) in such a way that its basic position will be the one we have when standing, looking at the ocean’s horizon (adjustment of the height and of the natural-forward tilt of the seat, and then of its mobility). It is then essential that the foundations have as much ability for movement as possible, and even for micro-movements. Each one of these movements will generate muscular work, an activation of the blood flow, a variation of the pressure on every single intervertebral disk. These movements can originate at the pelvis and/or the feet and thus the locomotive muscular chains are not restrained and can stay relatively active. The second basic principle : the load represented by the trunk is to be placed as judiciously as possible while distributing the weight of the trunk on the whole of the pelvis. The projection of the gravity center of the trunk will then reverberate on the rear and the top of the thighs, freeing the pelvis of the support pressures, as well as the coccyx or the sacrum (in the frequent case of the reversed pelvis which prepares the ground for slipped disks and respiratory, digestive and circulatory constraints of the lower members). The third basic principle : from the top of the pelvis to the basis of the head, to be supported as well as possible as soon as the need arises. The support of a backrest, with naperest (for the moments of listening, phone conversations, thinking and pause), adjustable in height and tilt, and perfectly moulding the back, is strongly advisable. The top of the backrest must free the arms of any restraints. The use of armrests, adjustable in height, width, depth and orientation allows to diminish the effect of the arms and trunk weight.
EJ : Can we consider that there are « basic » principles and « complementary » principles, and what would they be ? TP : We must realize that the human body, his or her needs of constant variation and motion, is originally not made for long term sitting. It is made for walking, standing and for short periods of sitting. Today´s working environments are the products of work organisations that offer little physical variation. Thus the long term sitting, producing risks for physical strain and mental fatigue is a reality. The challenge must therefore be to develop sitting solutions that reminds the body of its original needs, which is variation and flexibility between short terms postures.
p. 8, ergonoma journal, January • February • March 2007 / Janvier • Février • Mars 2007
The parts of the body that take part in stabilization, for instance the feet and the spine, must have a broad motion variety and simultaneously a comfortable support This means that the chairs design and function should offer sitting solutions for a variety of purposes. It must also be easy to give rests and breaks from sitting, in favour of standing and walking. There are no specific differences between basic and complementary principles. The goal is a holistic variation and motion, where the sitting solution is only a part in the defined work place solution. This way a variety of sitting solutions are developed and offered, driven by different applied experiences, research work and work environment competence.
AW : The best work seat can be made less efficient by the lack of ergonomic efficiency of the rest of the equipment included in the workstation. An ergonomic seat which would meet all the above requirements would not be very useful if the desktop cannot be adjusted to the size of the user as well as to the height of the seat itself. It has been well known for some time that the work environment (such as noise, light and the atmosphere in the office) have a psychic and physical impact on the human being. Recent studies show explicitly that multiple problems, due to work organization as well as social problems at work, manifest themselves in the form of musculoskeletal pains. It is important to take these facts into account while designing the ideal seat. DL : Several supplementary elements can have a positive effect on the work position : - Several resting points for the feet. - Easy modifications of the height of the seat. - The seat should have a mobility of a few degrees around the vertical axis. - The pressure under the buttocks and thighs would be much better distributed by precisely calibrated foams. Special attention must be paid to the shape of the seat, specially those with the sides higher than the center : they induce an internal rotation of the thighs and this reverberates on the sacro-iliac articulations by reducing the contact surface therefore increasing the pressure. - A backrest moulding as closely as possible the vertebral curvature with support of the para-vertebral muscles. Avoid the lumbar support which only concerns a few lumbar vertebras and leaves the low dorsal and sacrum free. - A backrest fitted with an horizontal articulation around the level of the tenth dorsal vertebra would free the solar plexus, the diaphragm and lower the pressures on the digestive tract. - A system to massage from the thighs suite p. 9

to the nape would compensate effectively the adverse results of prolonged sitting positions. The “governance” of our body is nevertheless a requirement because the best seat won’t give all its benefits unless we use it consciously.
EJ : As a specialist, what do you think of the public’s eye image that presents the “ ergonomic ” work seat as THE solution to preserve health at work ?
efficiency. The design of a good chair is transparent in the means of efficiency : the user should not bother to find out what mechanism or handle should be used to give physical or mental variation. The individual should use his/her efforts on the work tasks, not on finding out how to regulate a chair. A good introduction and training is needed. To make a comparing example : who expects a pianist to play good music without thorough piano training ?

It is much more important to aim at a suitable holistic solution – together with every concerned profession such as the suppliers, the retailers, the architects, the buyers as well as the human task force managers. It is only by a common effort of every actor concerned that visible progress will be achieved.
DL : It is the most widespread image. This may be due to the fact that in the recent past, before the computer era, the AW : Looking back on my previous employees moved more than now and the TP : In order to solve environmental answers, you will not be surprised when I use of the seats meant rest time.

- Two new work seats at Kinnarps, due to designers Johan Larsvall & Torbjörn Höjer: Plus[6]® Free Float and Plus[8]® Synchrone. Plus[6]®,Free Float, means that the base and backrest follow the body movements in a completely independent way. Plus [8] ® Synchrone, means that the backrest follows the base according to a well studied ratio. When you lean backwards, your back leans a little more than the base, and this creates a pleasant movement in the hip articulation. Resistance can be adapted to your weight and the mechanism can be blocked in any position. www.kinnarps.com

28 - EUROOFFICE (Sweden/USA) : Trackbar Emotion™. This special positioning keeps the user’s hands and arms in a natural
position during keyboard and mouse work. The unit is centered in front of the keyboard, the main feature of an ergonomic computer peripheral. With a traditional mouse, you have to move your hand sideways from the keyboard to the mouse and use small movements to manoeuvre the cursor on the screen. Trackbar Emotion™ will work in both PC and MAC environments without additional software. It is a plug-n-play device. www.eurooffice.com

Focus Focus “ SEE AND BE SEEN ” EYEVIS « VOIR et ETRE VU » Action and anticipation films and books were the first where one very often saw for the first time “ screenwalls ” monitoring and guarding sensitive places or in clean rooms data-processing with their large monitors aligned and piled up looking like a cockpit, where the “ guardian ” of these rooms held the only full information available. But 10 years later, this has become very often our daily information routine. The multi-media that led to the screens multiplication in order to receive simultaneously various sources of information is not any more the prerogative of only one person but that of a team. It is all about sharing informations, for analyses in real time as the financial rooms of markets of quotation, or the research laboratories require it, the safety rooms of the air, maritime or railway control towers as well as the “ urban ” CCTV cameras, or demonstrations, congresses, show rooms or training centers large screens, etc. And as ERGONOMA Journal asserts it : “ behind the machines… the men ”, behind the “ walls of images ” men work, and requires quality screens whose optical surface allows a fast and comfortable visualization. But it is in Germany that the display systems integration process developed. Created in 1995 by private investors, and installed not far from Stuttgart, EYEVIS is everywhere present on the digital display screens market (flat-faced screens, screenwalls, giant screens, projection blending) : digital display solutions, graphic controllers, software interfaces in adequacy with the various data-processing sources and videos. www.eyevis.de
EYEVIS PRODUCTS Eyevis is one of the leading manufacturers of large screen systems for control rooms, information, communication, simulation and virtual reality. So far, eyevis has made its reputation with high-quality large-screen systems consisting of modular DLP™cubes. These cubes are available in sizes between 50” -100”, so that any desired size of your large screen display can be realised. All sizes are available in various versions, differing in resolution (up to SXGA+). Redundant systems are also available. In order to avoid compatibility problems eyevis offers all necessary system components, like controllers, server units, a self-designed software and a range of further accessories. In addition to this eyevis also offers high-definition TFT based displays, in this range also LC displays with a very thin bezel are available. Eyevis has a worldwide network of subsidiaries, offices, distributors and resellers, who are also giving local technical support. Many satisfied customer around the world count on the eyevis systems: DaimlerChrysler, BMW, Petrobras, eON, Volkswagen, Vodafone, Orange,…

Associations forum Le forum des associations About the GfA (German ergonomics Society) The GfA wants to contribute to the dissemination of ergonomic knowledge into the education of all those who need these contents either directly (f. e. production and product design, work organization and organization development, labor protection and work design, personnel development and significant fields of labor policy) or indirectly (f. e. education/training, investment planning, purchase, human resources departments or management functions). Apart from that, ergonomic knowledge and matters of concern should be imparted by schools of all-round-education, but particularly by vocational schools. The GfA supports the transfer of ergonomic knowledge by the organization of appropriate ‘“platforms” (f. e. congresses, workshops, publications, job fairs). The specific task of GfA consists in the promotion of scientific and professional interests of Ergonomics/Human Factors. For that reason GfA fosters the contact with those who are interested in Ergonomics within the Germanspeaking area as well as at an international level. GfA sees itself especially as an active forum for the dialogue between science and practice and all interested social groups. The next Spring Conference of the German Ergonomics Society will take place in Magdeburg, February 28 - March 2, 2007. www.gfa-online.de
A new president for the Asociación Española de Ergonomia Francisco Javier Llaneza Álvarez, ergonomist at ACERALIA/ARCELOR, President of the Asociacion Asturiana de Ergonomia, and member of Ergonoma Scientific Council, is the new President of the Asociación Española de Ergonomia.

THE EUROPEAN ANTI-STRESS CENTRE
PLOMBIÈRES-LES-BAINS
A thermal and tourist resort located in the heart of the Southern Vosges, Plombières-les-Bains offers a protected environment at an altitude of 450 m. With a mild and temperate climate, particularly restful and sedative, with pure, oxygenated air, and balsamic essences extracted from the forests. Far from the stress, noise, urban agitation, in a protected environment, in the middle of a vast forest, brood in a remote valley. Plombières-les-Bains, wellknown since Roman times, is one of the oldest thermal resorts in Europe. The water, which springs from 10 thermal springs, has extraordinary properties : • Hyperthermal (between 50° and 85°C), which makes the water the hottest in Europe, with a flow of over 400,000 litres per day. • High in rare gases, in particular radon, high in trace elements, in particular fluorine (the richest in Europe). • Low mineralisation, soft, with a pH of around 8.5, rich in silica, with a slight sulphate, bicarbonate, sodium and calcium content. Deep granite in origin, the properties of the Plombières water are various, depending on the springs used : • Marked anti-spasm action, analgesic and antalgic action, antiinflammatory action, muscle relaxant action. • Relaxing effect promoting greater joint flexibility Sedative and vasodilatory action. The study of clinical results observed after thermal cures at Plombières-les-Bains for many years, clearly demonstrates the quality of the water and vindicates the therapeutic referrals of the resort : • Clear decrease in medication consumption (anti-inflammatories, antalgics, anti-spasm and laxative drugs), (Less work interruption), (Fewer hospitalisations). • Clear improvement in symptoms observed, in particular with intestinal function disorders. Improvement in range and flexibility of painful joints). Thermal treatment of rheumatology at Plombières-les-Bains and thermal treatments for rheumatology are classified as sedative treatments (baths, mud, steam), stimulating treatments (shower, massage, mobilisation) and rehabilitation treatments. They can also be classified as water based treatments (pools, baths, showers), treatments with derived thermal products (mud, steam), and treatments by specialists (massages, rehabilitation). Main indications : Painful vertebral osteo-arthritis, osteo-arthritis of the limbs, the hip or knee, in addition to the normal medical treatment and in the absence of an operation indication in the short term. Tendonopathies : (shoulders, elbows, hips, heels), which have become chronic, after-effects of traumas and algodystrophy problems fibromyalgia and other chronic painful conditions. Chronic inflammatory rheumatisms : in particular rheumatisms linked to Crohn’s disease. Post-operation conditions: herniated disc, osteo-arthritis of the hip, osteo-arthritis of the knee, shoulder. The cure appears to be especially appropriate in all cases where digestive or skin intolerance limits the use of normal medications.
