Wellbeing without prescription.

This year, I have decided not take any “ good resolution ” for my return to work.That will allow me not to feel guilty with my first lapse of memory.

Let’s keep this marvellous feeling of freedom of a body back in shape, a rebuilt spirit and words with no meaning, just the time of “ summery slackening ”… “ God ”, it was good !

I do not know if you also have this feeling of freedom, therefore, we decided, with this issue, to help you to extend as long as possible, this wellbeing without prescription, thanks to a reflexion on the adjustable tables, (desk, keyboard, etc.) that are the concrete and material expression of our working life.

We discovered a new computer mouse,“ Hippus ” (on front cover) the “ horse ” mouse, which use is a true relaxation time for the hand.

And, when this pleasant end of summer sadness will not be in the air anymore, it will be time to think about thalasso and balneo in order to prevent psychosomatic stresses and pains, or to test the products chosen by the editors.

It is a promise !! this year, I will think prevention and I will preserve my health capital, at work as well as at home.

Bien-être sans ordonnance.

Cette année, c’est décidé, je ne prends aucune « bonne résolution » de rentrée. Comme cela je ne culpabiliserai pas au premier oubli. Laissons se prolonger cette merveilleuse sensation de liberté du corps retrouvé, d’un esprit reconstruit et de mots dits pour ne rien dire, juste le temps de la « relâche estivale » … « Dieu » que ce fut bon !

Je ne sais si vous ressentez vous aussi cette sensation de liberté, aussi, nous avons décidé avec ce numéro, de vous aider à prolonger le plus durablement possible, ce bien-être sans ordonnance, grâce à une réflexion sur les tables ajustables, (bureau, clavier, etc.) qui sont l’expression concrète et matérielle de notre activité professionnelle.

Nous avons découvert un nouveau dispositif de pointage relatif manuel pour ordinateur, « Hippus » (en couverture) le « cheval souris », dont l’utilisation est un vrai moment de détente pour la main.

Et, lorsqu’il ne régnera plus dans l’air cette agréable tristesse de fin d’été, il sera temps de penser thalasso et balnéo pour prévenir stress et douleurs psychosomatiques, ou d’essayer les produits choisis par la rédaction.

C’est promis !! cette année, je penserai prévention, et je préserverai mon capital santé, au travail comme à la maison.

Varying the work table height : For whom ? What for ?

Why is it important to adjust the tabletop’s height to the morphology of the users ?

Doctor Armin Windel, Head of the Ergonomics Unit of the Ferman Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) :

“D

espite the light physical work and the supposed lack of “ classic ” risk factors for muscular and skeletal diseases, employees in the office domain in particular are very often affected by muscular-skeletal disorders. The predominant neck pains and headaches, neck-shoulder-arm syndromes or lumbar and back aches tend to be reversible muscular disorders and cause absence from work more rarely than in occupational groups performing heavy muscular labour. Even so the health of employees working in offices has long been acknowledged as an economic factor. This is highlighted by the numerous movement and back exercise programmes implemented by health insurance organisations and companies since the end of the 80s.

The working conditions connected with these complaints have been studied closely over the past few decades. To summarise, the following strains were identified as risk factors for muscular-skeletal disorders : • inadequate work equipment and furniture (especially desk and chair) • unfavourable positioning of the main items of equipment of keyboard and VDU • lack of system ergonomics (harmonisation of work equipment and furniture and adaptation to the working environment) • unfavourable task with repetitive sequences of motions • excessively long daily working hours at the VDU with too few breaks and few changes in posture It is obvious, that adequate furniture plays one important role in the prevention of muscular-skeletal disorders. From this point of view the adjustment of the table’s top is a precondition for healthy and ergonomic work. ”

Daniel Lazennec, work posture specialist trainer : “ Just by watching most people in our own working place and perhaps by paying a little attention to oneself, it is easy to see that most of the time, the height of the desktop is not adapted to our own morphology. Considering that the sitting position is the most frequently used in the administrative and computer jobs, the height of the basic working tools (table or desk and chair) is very seldom adjusted to the user.

This person must therefore nearly permanently adapt his position, producing muscular and nervous strain, stress and then personal depreciation. The quality of the professional performance is diminished. The quality of concentration is lowered because the energy used to adjust the body’s position, the compensation and adaptation movements all contribute to drain energy and “ good will ”.

During the last ten years of my work in this field, adapting the working tools exactly to the worker’s morphology has emerged as a basic necessity. For example, concerning the topic of this paper, it is important to place the tabletop at the right height for the user, depending of the professional gestures he has to accomplish, and to adapt also the height of the seat. ”

Adjustable table = restored mental energy What is the physiological necessity of working in different positions (sitting, horse-rider, standingsitting, standing) ?

AW : “ In the age of the modern information and communication society, nearly all activities are performed sitting in the office and administrative domain. There are – some - good reasons for this.

Standing requires much greater energy than sitting, mainly due to the involvement of larger groups of muscles in the thighs and buttocks. Because fatigue sets in more quickly, standing is not so good for work which involves greater concentration. Extended standing places a greater strain on the hip joint. Because the leg-vein-muscle pump is inactive, blood clots may arise in the leg vessels, which in turn encourages vein disorders such as varicose veins and thrombosis. In addition there is an impaired stability of the trunk, which means that standing as a posture is less suitable in particular for activities with sometimes fine motor requirements (operation of a mouse at the computer) at least over longer periods. Consequently sitting is regarded nowadays as a generally accepted posture in offices.

Because of the anatomy and physiology of the human body, sitting over long periods also causes problems, however. Even at an office workplace designed in all respects in accordance with the state of the art, constant sitting with no change of posture will lead sooner or later to impairments and complaints, depending of the constitution of the individual concerned. In addition to creating optimum working conditions, there is a further, essential goal of ergonomic work design in the avoidance of static postures and the promotion of movement at the workplace. ”

DL : “ When one observes people at work using equipment which is not morphology adapted, one notices several recurring dysfunctions : • Leg position generating blood flow problems ; • Pelvis continually placed in a retroversion position, which creates continual pressure on the wrong place of some intervertebral discs, the sciatic and crural nerves and slipped discs.

• Prolonged positioning of the dorsal and cervical columns in constant adaptation due to a lack of balance, which brings about muscular weariness and can even result in distortion if sustained for too long (scoliotic attitude for example) ; • Pressure exerted by the chest on the abdomen resulting in a slowing down of the movements of the diaphragm muscle (hampered breathing) and of the digestive tract bringing about bad digestion (tiredness, bad temper, uneasyness….), hampered nutrition and bowel movement…

• Looseness of the muscular chain which sustains man’s vertical position, and thus, sagging position of the trunk; • Upper limbs held either too high or too low, generating tiredness and loss of time. These adaptative positions have an impact on the cervical and high dorsal spine, with muscular stress and problems such as slipped discs and excessive pressure on those rachidian nerves located in the cervico-thoracic region.

We should also note that this region has links with the head, the digestive tract, the solar plexus and the heart.

• Frequent visual accommodation which stresses the ocular muscles and has an impact on the muscles of the high cervical vertebrae.

A whole book would be necessary to explain the complexity of the interaction and interdependence between the different parts of the human body and the consequences of working in positions which do not respect physiology.

We are at the beginning of these observations pointed out by health at work medicine and experts in this field. The decisionmakers in every workplace can note the consequences of this lack of well-being of their workforce and of the dysfunctions concerning management, productivity and costs.

The use of a height adjustable working table adapted to the morphology of the user and to the professional tasks he must accomplish will help overcome part or all of the problems listed previously. Besides the classic sitting (which would by itself need a precise description) and standing positions, three other work positions can be used : 1 The semi-lying down position, marginal but not to be discarded.

It can be used in such situation as during a prolonged phone call concerning for example an exchange of ideas, allowing a good physical recovery and diminished mental load.

2 the « horse rider » position, re-energizing the legs, pelvis and trunk, excellent for a balanced muscular effort 3 the « standing-sitting » position, leaning on the buttocks and thus relieving the legs and pelvis of the weight of the trunk.

These additional positions are very efficient when used with a height adjustable worktable and the right seat.”

Are there any other consequences of working in a standing position ?

AW : “ There are some recommendations that depend on the desk but not on the question whether one works sitting or standing: The whole desk area should not be smaller than 1.28 square meters. For the positioning of the Visual Display Unit (VDU) an angle combination between the desk and the display zone is favourable to avoid glare and flicker. The desk height has to be adjustable in a range between (at least) 680 and 1150.

The maximum thickness of the table top is 30 mm. On the background of a highly technologised work equipment one should pay attention to cable ducts. Limitations for the knees and legs should be avoided therefor draws should not be fixed. Our point of view is that containers on wheels are a better solution. … suite p 11

The desk surface should be dull with the reflectance between 20 % and 50 %. For those persons performing alternating sittingstanding work we recommend a mechanism allowing a quick and easy adjustment of the table’s height to the needs of the user. ”

Daniel Lazennec : “ Whenever possible, the standing work position is recommended, alternating with the other positions which provide a support for the pelvis, the legs and the back. When the working environment is correctly adapted, the standing position allows different ways of using the legs and moving them around somewhat: variation of the resting points under the feet, weight resting alternatively on one leg and the other, support of the pelvis or the high part of the thighs against the edge of the table, and when there is the possibility of walking a few steps, both the blood flow and the activity of some muscular chains are stimulated.

The pelvis comes back to its basic position with all the beneficial consequences on the placement of the vertebrae. Breathing and digestive tracts are freed of the constrictions.

A great freedom in movements and gestures enables very active people (tasks which need speed or frequent movements) to work with a greater productivity.

It is possible to avoid physiological dysfunctions by alternating those five basic positions. These results can be greatly enhanced by implementing a behavioural education based on learning postural awareness and movement management. ”

Which type of person could benefit of work height adjustment ?

AW : “ Our point of view is that most office workers can benefit from height adjustable desks. But it is important to notice that the work task, that means the type of activity, the change of activity and the sequences of the tasks, and the work organisation (working hours per day and break arrangements; requirements to communicate) strongly affect the way we move at the workplace.

Within the framework of a recently concluded research project it was also found that it cannot be assumed for the average user that a standing and sitting dynamism is (automatically) furthered which would counteract the lack of movement. This makes clear that in addition to the provision of high desks, a specific encouragement to use what is provided is necessary so that standing-sitting dynamism is really promoted. ” DL : “ As a general rule, work height adjustment is beneficial in most work situation where a specific task or series of tasks take place in a small area, and also in individual workstations. In fact, each work context deserves its own ergonomic and ergometric analysis.

On any case, I strongly advise to implement an adapted training session which would enable the users to become “ managers ” of their working positions and furniture, the return on investment being then optimum for the employer. ”

Which kind of profession can most benefit of this height adjustable work ?

AW & DL : “ Usually, all persons with a sedentary job are concerned by this setup, working or not in front of a computer.

But a number of other professions would be interested : jewellers, prosthodontists, seamstress, mechanics… ”

DL : “ An important part of the way we function as human beings is the visual and auditory perceptions, mingling with the other senses.

When you modify the height of your workstation, you modify your perceptions, you see something different, you hear something different. You don’t stay strained and stressed on one task, in a frozen environment conducing to “ sleep ”.

Work position variation is a sort of « breath for attention, concentration and dynamism », a sort of break for the important mental load on the workplace; it is a factor of creativity and cheerfulness ! ”

Can it be said that a worktable is THE answer to the physiological problems encountered on the workplace ?

AW : “ It has not been established beyond all doubt in what proportion the different facets of office work contribute to muscular-skeletal complaints on account of the multiplicity of causes. On the other hand Daniel and I, we both have pointed out that an adequate work equipment is essential for the avoidance of muscular and skeletal diseases and for healthy and economic work. From a scientific point of view it is important the whole working system is designed adequately, e.g. taking into account the user’s needs. This is what we call system ergonomics. ”

DL : “ There are several elements to be considered, so I won’t give a definitive conclusion on that matter.

From the studies carried on with my team, it appears that different types of tables and chairs have a positive effect but other elements must be considered to reach a high performance work configuration.

One can find tables with different systems of height adjustment : 1 the height can be adjusted by a system of pin. This kind of table is still better than the non adjustable ones.

2 adjustable by crank, a bit tedious for the person who wants to change frequently the height of his tabletop, may be difficult to use if there is a handicap of the upper limbs, convenient for small height variations; 3 adjustable by gas jacks, the quickest and most dynamic height adjustment method, not advisable for persons with back, vertebral, arm or shoulder problems, 4 adjustable by electrical engine, the easiest method, convenient in most cases. Electricity failure is its limit, but nowadays, few jobs are possible without electricity. ”

Tone Petrelius TCO Development : “ Speaking of the characteristics and important ergonomic factors getting into the choice of a work table, it is of high importance that the work station provides : - flexibility and adaptability to individual needs as well as to the different work tasks; - usability (simple and easy to use and to understand the benefits of switching between sitting and standing, also to combine a good sitting and a flexible sitting and standing) ; - good user information through the design of the furniture itself, of the different handles and other equipment needed. ” Also to know that dimensions and adjustability functions go together with safety, strength, material characteristics and ecological qualities. ”

What other advantages could be obtained by working at different heights ?

AW : “ Comment : Excuse me but from my ergonomic point of view I can’t contribute to this question. ”

La variabilité du plan de travail : pour qui, pour quoi ?

Adapter la hauteur du plan de travail à la morphologie des utilisateurs, est-ce nécessaire ?

Docteur Armin Windel, Directeur de l’unité d’ergonomie du Bureau Fédéral allemand pour la Sécurité et la Santé au Travail (BAuA) : « Malgré une pénibilité moins lourde, les employés du tertiaire sont très souvent touchés par les Troubles MusculoSquelettiques (TMS). Les souffrances les plus fréquentes, maux de cou et de tête, syndrome nuque-épaule-bras, douleurs lombaires et dorsales, sont dans la plupart des cas des désordres musculaires réversibles et causent moins de jours d’arrêt de travail que dans les groupes professionnels effectuant des travaux beaucoup plus physiques.

L’état de santé des salariés est intégré depuis longtemps dans les facteurs économiques, ce que confirment les nombreux programmes de gymnastique et d’exercices du dos développés par les organismes d’assurance santé depuis la fin des années 80.

Les conditions de travail liées à ces problèmes de santé ont été étudiées attentivement depuis quelques dizaines d’années et les éléments suivants ont été identifiés et reconnus comme facteurs de risques engendrant des TMS : - matériel et mobilier de travail inadaptés (en particulier bureau et assise) - mauvais positionnement des principaux outils de bureau, clavier, écran - respect insuffisant des principes ergonomiques (harmonisation de l’équipement et des fournitures professionnelles et adaptation à l’environnement de travail) - tâches mal adaptées avec séquences de mouvements répétitifs - durée du travail trop longue devant écran, avec trop peu de pauses et de changements de postures.

Il est clair qu’un mobilier adapté est un facteur important de la prévention des TMS. De ce point de vue, la possibilité d’ajuster la hauteur du plan de travail est une condition préalable à la mise en place d’un travail respectant la santé et l’ergonomie. »

Daniel Lazennec, formateur spécialiste de la posture au travail : « Observons la plupart des personnes dans notre entourage professionnel et nous nous rendons compte que la hauteur de leur table de travail n’est généralement pas adaptée à leur morphologie. La position assise étant la plus fréquente dans les emplois tertiaires, il est nécessaire de réaliser une réelle adaptation de la hauteur des outils de travail de base (table et chaise).

Le plus souvent, c’est à la personne de s’adapter créant ainsi un supplément de fatigue musculaire et nerveuse, de mauvais stress, le tout entraînant un sentiment de dévalorisation, dont la qualité de l’implication professionnelle se ressent.

La concentration est altérée car l‘énergie d’adaptation, les positions et les gestes de compensation et d’accommodation sont de véritables pompes à énergie et à « bonne volonté ».

Au cours de mes dix dernières années d’intervention professionnelle, il m’est apparu comme une nécessité de base de mettre en adéquation les outils de travail avec la morphologie du travailleur.

Par exemple, sur le sujet abordé aujourd’hui, placer la table de travail à la hauteur adéquate pour l’utilisateur et ses actes professionnels; avec le réglage correspondant de la hauteur du siège. »

Table réglable = énergie mentale retrouvée Y a-t-il une nécessité physiologique de travailler dans différentes positions (assis, assis en cavalier, assisdebout, debout) ?

AW : « A l’ére de la société moderne de l’information et de la communication, la majorité des activités sont effectuées assis au bureau et pour de bonnes raisons. La position debout nécessite une plus grande dépense énergétique que la position assise, principalement par l’utilisation de plus grands groupes de muscles dans les cuisses et les fesses. Comme la fatigue survient plus rapidement, la position debout ne convient pas aux tâches nécessitant le plus de concentration. La station debout prolongée impose une contrainte plus importante sur l’articulation de la hanche. Les muscles de la jambe immobile ne jouant plus leur rôle de pompe dans le système veineux de retour, des caillots et des stases peuvent apparaître dans les vaisseaux des jambes, ce qui peut favoriser l’apparition de problèmes veineux tels que varices et thromboses. De plus, l’équilibre du tronc est moins bon, ce qui signifie que la posture debout convient moins à des tâches comportant des périodes d’activité motrice fine (telles que la manipulation d’une souris d’ordinateur), du moins sur de longues périodes. Il en découle logiquement que la position assise est de nos jours généralement considérée comme la position de référence au bureau.

Toutefois, en raison de l’anatomie et de la physiologie du corps humain, rester assis durant de longues périodes cause également des problèmes. Même dans un bureau organisé dans tous ses aspects conformément aux connaissances et recommandations les plus modernes, rester assis en permanence sans aucun changement de position conduira tôt ou tard à l’apparition de problèmes et de plaintes, suivant la constitution de la personne concernée. La conception ergonomique du travail, en plus de permettre la mise en place de conditions de travail optimum, a un autre but essentiel : permettre d’éviter les positions statiques et agencer l’emplacement de travail de manière à permettre le mouvement. »

DL : « Physiologiquement, sur les personnes travaillant avec du matériel non adapté à leur morphologie, on remarque de nombreux dysfonctionnements récurrents : - Placement des jambes engendrant des troubles de la circulation sanguine,

Outre la position assise de référence et la position debout, trois autres positions peuvent être utilisées : 1. la position semi-allongée, marginale mais à ne pas négliger.

Elles est utilisable dans des situations telles que durant les appels téléphoniques prolongés portant sur un échange d’idées par exemple, pour la réflexion, la récupération physique et la diminution de la charge mentale ; 2. la position dite du « cavalier » redynamisant les jambes, le bassin et le tronc, excellente pour le travail musculaire équilibré, 3. la position « assis-debout » en appui-fessiers soulageant le bassin et les jambes du poids du tronc.

Ces positions complémentaires sont tout à fait efficientes avec une table de travail réglable en hauteur et le siège qui va avec. »

Quelles sont les autres conséquences du travail en position debout ?

- Positionnement du bassin dans une dynamique dite en « rétroversion », propice aux pressions régulière de certaines zones des disques intervertébraux, des nerfs sciatiques et cruraux et d’hernies discales. Le schéma des contraintes articulaires sur la région de la cinquième lombaire et du sacrum en position couramment assise le montre (d’après le logiciel Ergométrix qui présente les calculs et les comparaisons entre les couples, pressions et contraintes articulaires ainsi que l’interaction entre le positionnement des outils de travail et l’Homme) : - Positionnement prolongé de la colonne dorsale et cervicale en adaptation constante car en non-équilibre, cela engendre de la fatigue musculaire voire déformante dans le temps (attitudes scoliotiques par exemple), - Pression de la cage thoracique sur l’abdomen freinant les mouvements du diaphragme (respiration entravée, base musculaire du tronc non active, …) et de l’appareil digestif engendrant de mauvaise digestion (fatigue, humeur, mal-être…), nutrition et élimination gênées, - Relâchement de l’activité des chaînes musculaires construisant la verticalité de l’homme, donc affaissement du tronc, - Positionnement des membres supérieurs, soit trop haut soit trop bas avec fatigue et perte de temps. Ces positions « d’adaptation » se répercutent sur la colonne cervicale et haute dorsale avec tensions musculaire et problèmes de type hernies discales et pressions des nerfs rachidiens logés dans la région cervico-thoracique ; notons aussi que cette région est en lien avec la tête, l’appareil digestif, le plexus solaire ou le cœur, - Accommodation visuelle fréquente fatiguant les muscles oculaires et se répercutant sur la musculature des hautes cervicales, La complexité de l’interaction, de l’interdépendance entre les parties du corps humain et les conséquences des positions de travail non respectueuses de la physiologie nécessiterait un ouvrage.

Nous ne sommes qu’au début de ces constats soulignés par la Médecine du travail et par les experts. Les décisionnaires dans tous les lieux de travail en voient les conséquences dans le « malêtre » de leurs salariés et les dysfonctionnements de management et de production, aggravés par les coûts supplémentaires générés.

L’utilisation de tables de travail à hauteur réglable et adaptées à la morphologie de l’utilisateur ainsi qu’à ses tâches professionnelles effaceront tout ou partie de ces problèmes.

AW : « Certaines recommandations dépendent du bureau lui-même, mais pas du fait que l’on travaille en position debout ou assis : la surface complète du plan de travail ne devrait pas être inférieure à 1,28 m2. Dans le positionnement de l’écran, on devrait pouvoir trouver un angle qui permette d’éviter éblouissement et clignotements. Le bureau devrait pouvoir être ajusté en hauteur entre (au minimum) 680 et 1150 mm. L’épaisseur maximum du plateau de travail est 30 mm. A l’arrière de tout poste de travail très technologique, on devrait prévoir des passages de câbles. Toute gêne devrait être évitée pour les genoux et jambes, donc les tiroirs ne devraient pas être fixes. Nous pensons que des blocs tiroirs sur roulettes sont la meilleure solution. La surface du plan de travail devrait être mate avec un taux de réflection lumineux entre 20 et 50%. Pour les personnes qui alternent les positions debout et assis durant leur travail, nous recommandons un mécanisme qui permette un ajustement rapide et facile de la hauteur du bureau à leur besoin. » DL : « Dans les métiers où cela est possible, le travail debout est vivement conseillé, en alternance avec les autres positions offrant un soutien du bassin, des jambes et du dos. Lorsque l’environnement de travail est adapté, la position debout permet d’utiliser ses jambes de différentes manières et de les faire travailler quelque peu : variations des points d’appui sous les pieds, alternance du poids sur une jambe puis sur l’autre, appui du bassin ou du haut des cuisses sur le bord de la table… Lorsqu’on a la possibilité d’effectuer quelques pas, la circulation sanguine est stimulée, comme l’activité de certaines chaînes musculaires.

Le bassin retrouve sa position de référence avec les conséquences bénéfiques sur le positionnement des vertèbres. Les appareils respiratoire et digestif sont libérés des pressions.

Une grande liberté dans les mouvements et les gestes permet aux gens très actifs, ou lors des tâches rapides avec déplacements fréquents, de travailler avec une plus grande efficacité.

Alternant ces cinq positions de base, une parade contre les dysfonctionnements physiologiques est donc possible. On l’optimisera par une éducation comportementale améliorant chaque position par l’apprentissage de la conscience posturale et le gestion du mouvement. »

La variation de la hauteur de travail peut-elle convenir à tout le monde?

AW : « De notre point de vue, la plupart des employés de bureau trouveraient avantage à utiliser des bureaux ajustables en hauteur. Mais il est important de noter que la tâche, c’est à dire le type d’activité, les changements d’activité et la séquence d’enchaînement des tâches, et l’organisation du travail (nombre d’heures … suite p 15

de travail quotidiennes, pauses, possibilités de communication) affectent très fortement la manière dont nous nous comportons au travail. Une étude récente a montré que l’utilisateur moyen à qui on fournit un bureau ajustable en hauteur ne va pas automatiquement continuer à utiliser cette possibilité qui lui est offerte de lutter contre le manque de mouvement. Ceci montre clairement qu’en plus de lui fournir un bureau à hauteur variable, il faut activement encourager et inciter l’utilisateur à s’en servir afin que cette dynamique de travail assis-debout soit réellement un succès. »

DL : « En règle générale, la variation de la hauteur du plan de travail est bénéfique dans la plupart des postes de travail se déroulant autour d’une tâche précise ou d’un ensemble de tâches dans une faible surface et dans les postes individuels. En fait, chaque situation de travail mérite une analyse ergonomique et ergométrique.

Dans tous les cas, je conseille une formation préalable afin que les utilisateurs deviennent gestionnaires de leurs positions de travail et de leur matériel, le retour sur investissement des employeurs sera alors optimal. »

DL : « Je ne conclue pas sur ce sujet car les facteurs sont divers Le travail de recherche mené avec mon équipe a montré que outre le plan de travail et le siège, d’autres éléments sont à prendre en considération pour parfaire la configuration de travail performante.

Il existe aujourd’hui des tables à différents systèmes : 1. ajustable en hauteur, plus adaptée que la plupart des tables standards, 2. réglable par manivelle, de fonctionnement fastidieux pour la personne qui souhaite utiliser différentes positions de travail, difficilement employable pour des personnes à contraintes des membres supérieurs, pratique pour des variations de hauteur de faible amplitude, 3. réglable par vérins à gaz, la plus rapide et la plus dynamique, à déconseiller aux personnes ayant des contraintes vertébrales , d’épaules et des membres supérieurs, 4. réglable par moteur(s) électrique(s), la plus confortable et utilisable dans la plupart des cas. La panne d’électricité est sa limite, mais de nos jours, sans électricité, peu de métiers sont possibles… »

A quel type de métier ce principe de travail varié en hauteur peut-il convenir ?

AW & DL : « Communément, toutes les personnes à travail “ sédentaire ” sont concernées par ce système, qu’elles travaillent ou non devant un écran d’ordinateur. Une autre population est très besoin pour cet équipement, les métiers sont variés : bijoutiers, prothésistes dentaires, couturières, monteurs-câbleurs, mécaniciens… »

Y a-t-il d'autres avantages de travailler à différentes hauteurs ?

AW : « Excusez-moi, mais de mon point de vue ergonomique je ne peux pas apporter de réponse à cette question. » DL : « Un aspect important dans notre fonctionnement sont les influences visuelles et auditives venant en complémentarité avec les autres sens. Varier les hauteurs de son poste de travail, c’est varier ses propres perceptions, c’est voir autre chose, c’est entendre autre chose. Ce n’est donc plus rester « tendu » sur une tâche, dans un environnement figé qui endort.

La variation de position est une sorte de « respiration de l’attention, de la concentration et du dynamisme », une pause pour la charge mentale importante sur les lieux de travail, c’est un facteur de créativité et de bonne humeur ! »

Tone Petrelius TCO Development : Pour citer les caractéristiques et les facteurs ergonomiques importants, il est très 'important que le poste de travail fournisse : Une flexibilité et une adaptabilité aux différents besoins individuels, comme aux différentes tâches; Une simplicité d’usage (simple et facile à utiliser avec une bonne compréhension des avantages apportés par l’alternance d’une bonne assise et d’une position assis-debout flexible) ; une bonne information de l'utilisateur par la conception du mobilier lui-même, des différentes manettes et de tout autre équipement inclus.

Savoir également que les dimensions et les fonctions d’ajustement vont de pair avec la sécurité, la solidité, les caractéristiques matérielles et les qualités écologiques.

Peut-on dire qu'une table de travail réglable est LA solution aux problèmes physiologiques rencontrés sur les lieux de travail ?

AW : « La proportion dans laquelle les différents aspects du travail contribuent à l’apparition des TMS n’a pas encore été établie avec certitude en raison du grand nombre de causes possibles. Cependant, Daniel et moi avons tous deux mis en évidence que l’utilisation d’un matériel de travail adapté est essentielle pour éviter les TMS et pour travailler dans des conditions saines et économiques. D’un point de vue scientifique, il est important que l’ensemble du poste de travail soit conçu correctement, c'est-à-dire en tenant compte des besoins de l’utilisateur. C’est ce que l’on appelle la méthode ergonomique. »

The right to communicate for all.

Here is the mission of SENSOTEC, a Belgian company specializing in technical aids for sensory handicapped persons. The ability to read what is on a computer screen or a page of text in a book, whatever the work conditions, seems obvious to most of us. And yet, beyond obvious situations such as insufficient lighting, screen too distant, there are those situations where the user experiences reading difficulties (temporary or permanent) because of visual impairment or dyslexia, diagnosed or not. It is in this context that Sensotec, a Belgian company based near Bruges, has applied its knowledge and experience with assistive technology specialising in the field of visual disability and dyslexia, to work environment adaptation, in Belgium but also in other countries. Its founders had seen the need for such tools while working in an institute for disabled children (blind, deaf…), and decided to create tools like the Braillescope, designed to give blind people straightforward access to data. As technology progressed, improvements and evolutions increased the accessibility of the data not only for blind people but also for their helpers. The evolution of scanners and speech synthesis allowed to go from the first reading machines (such as the Digikrant, designed in collaboration with universities and publishers to give access to the biggest national newspaper,) to autonomous and easy to use reading machine, like the Reporter : place down a page of text for the machine to read, push a button, and it will read the text aloud. There is no need to use a computer here..

Also specialists of solutions for dyslexia. Since 2003, Sensotec has also specialised more and more in the field of solutions for dyslexic people.

The company’s goal is the social integration of sensory disabled people and the adaptation of existing assistive technology to serve a larger public. The range of assistive technology offered by Sensotec, in addition to those using Braille, is quite large : - Keyboards with enlarged characters, or keyboard protections, also with larger characters, that can be used on a worksite for instance ; - Colour detectors usable in low lighting conditions ;

1 Le droit à la communication pour tous.

Voilà la mission de SENSOTEC, société belge spécialisée dans les aides techniques pour les handicapés sensoriels. La possibilité de lire ce qui est à l’écran, ou une page de texte dans un livre, et cela quelles que soient les conditions de travail, paraît évidente à la plupart d’entre nous.

Et pourtant, outre des situations évidentes telles qu’un éclairage insuffisant, un écran trop lointain, il faut considérer le fait que l’utilisateur peut avoir des difficultés (temporaires ou permanentes) de lecture : basse vision, dyslexie diagnostiquée ou non.

C’est dans ce contexte que Sensotec, une société belge basée près de Bruges, a appliqué ses connaissances et son expérience dans les aides techniques, principalement dans les domaines du handicap visuel et de la dyslexie, à l’adaptation des postes de travail, en Belgique mais aussi dans d’autres pays.

Ses fondateurs ont vu le besoin pour de tels outils, au sein de l’institut pour enfants handicapés (aveugles, sourds…) dans lequel ils travaillaient, et ont créé des outils comme le Braillescope, donnant un accès direct à l’information pour les aveugles.

L’évolution des scanners et des voix de synthèse a permis de passer des premières machines à lire (comme le Digikrant, lisant le journal, créé en association avec des universités et des éditeurs) à des machines à lire autonomes et faciles d’emploi, comme le Reporter : il suffit de déposer une page à lire sur l’appareil, de pousser un bouton, et il lit la page tout haut, sans avoir besoin d’employer un ordinateur.

Egalement spécialistes des solutions d’aides aux dyslexiques. Depuis fin 2003, Sensotec se spécialise en plus dans le domaine des solutions pour les personnes dyslexiques.

La société vise l’intégration sociale des handicapés sensoriels et l’adaptation des aides techniques existantes au service du plus grand nombre. Le choix d’aides techniques proposés par Sensotec, outre celles employant le Braille, est large : - claviers à caractères agrandis, ou protection de clavier elles aussi à grands caractères, employables sur chantier par exemple; - reconnaisseurs de couleurs employables par faible luminosité; - appareils de mise en relief du texte et des images; - agrandisseurs d’écrans et agrandisseurs de texte, allant du logiciel compatible avec la plupart des programmes usuels, aux appareils indépendants de divers formats, sortes de loupes électroniques, qui permettent aussi de changer les contrastes ou même les couleurs du texte et du fond (en violet sur jaune par exemple !) ou d’agrandir un détail de l’écran de télévision. Certains sont reliés à une caméra, ou à une télévision, d’autres enfin reliés à l’écran du PC ; - tous appareils utilisant les possibilités de la synthèse vocale, souvent multilingues, comme les téléphones lisant à voix haute les messages, commandes et numéros affichés à l’écran, mais aussi un système GPS parlant, et même un bloc notes et agenda électronique parlant, l’Euroscope ; - machines à lire indépendantes comme le Reporter, et d’autres intégrées dans des programmes adaptés ; - logiciels permettant la lecture à voix haute tels que le Kurzweil 3000 offrent de vastes possibilités au niveau de la lecture de tout texte scanné ou tapé, ou trouvé sur l’Internet par exemple. Au niveau de l’écriture et de l’étude, ce logiciel offre la possibilité de surligner, d’ajouter des notes écrites ou vocales dans tout document de texte ou d’image, permettant par exemple de remplir sur l’écran un questionnaire numérisé. Des recherches dans des dictionnaires multilingues intégrés sont faciles à effectuer, et le logiciel peut proposer les mots au fur et à mesure de l’écriture. Tout texte écrit peut être sauvegardé sous forme sonore, en fichier MP3. Ce logiciel développé pour des personnes dyslexiques est cependant d’une aide précieuse pour des personnes ayant des difficultés de lecture dues à bien d’autres raisons, et est adaptable pour tous les niveaux de lecture. Cet outil multilingue est en outre une aide précieuse à l’apprentissage des langues. La lecture orale et la sauvegarde sous format vocal permettent aussi l’étude de textes, nouvelles régulations, syllabus, … dans un cadre où la lecture est difficile, ou pour des personnes ayant une meilleure mémoire auditive que visuelle, ou privilégiant un contexte auditif.

L’application pour tous ces produits des concepts d’interaction avec l’outil, d’adaptation, et d’ergonomie, est évidemment cruciale, et l’équipe de Sensotec prend en considération les besoins de chaque personne, le droit à la communication quels que soient l’âge, les capacités et possibilités de chacun. www.sensotec.be

- Machines changing diagrams and text into tactile sheets ; - Screen magnifiers and video magnifiers, ranging from software compatible with most applications, to autonomous systems of various sizes, which are like electronic magnifying glasses, allowing to change the contrast or even the colours of the text and the background (to purple on yellow for instance !) or to enlarge a detail on the television screen.

Some are linked to a camera, or a television, and some are linked to a PC screen ; - All the tools using the possibilities given by speech synthesis, often multilingual.

For instance telephones that read aloud messages, commands and phone numbers displayed on the screen, but also a mobile navigation system, and even a speaking notebook and organiser, the Euroscope ; - Autonomous reading machines like the Reporter - Software allowing text to be read aloud such as Kurzweil 3000 opens a large range of possibilities for reading any text, scanned or typed, or found on the Internet for instance.

For writing and studying, this software allows highlighting, or the addition of spoken and/or written notes, for example to fill in a scanned questionnaire on the screen.

Integrated multilingual dictionaries are easy to search, and the software can propose and predict words while the text is being written.

Any written text can be saved as an MP3 sound file. This software was developed with dyslexic persons in mind, but can offer precious help to other people experiencing reading difficulties due to other reasons, and is adaptable for all levels of reading, for use at school and in higher education, and for adults, at home or at work. This multilingual tool is also very helpful for language learning. Texts being read aloud and saved in sound files also allow for easier study of, for example, new regulations, or syllabus-based courses, in an environment where reading would be difficult, or for people having a more auditive than visual memory, or simply preferring an auditive framework. The application, for all these products, of concepts of interaction with the tool, of adaptation, and ergonomics, is of course crucial, and the whole team at Sensotec takes into consideration the needs of each individual, the right to communicate, whatever the age, abilities and possibilities of each person. www.sensotec.be

Focus Focus To end RSI, a new mouse generation

La souris « Cheval »

The use of a mouse can constitute a factor of RSI located with the right or left index and the thumb, if the operator seizes it too strongly. In addition, a too small or too large mouse compared to the hand size can be responsible for pains to annular and auricular fingers. The top-of-the-range mouses which make it possible to have a slightly inclined hand in a natural way are much more comfortable after hours of use.

The « Horse » mouse The editors made the choice to present to you a very new mouse called “ HIPPUS ” (cf the front cover of Ergonoma Journal), the “ HORSE ” mouse. It comes to us from Netherlands, its development followed many studies and analyses carried out by the University Hospital ERASMUS of ROTTERDAM on patients with RSI of the upper limbs. At first sight, it resembles a Manta ray more than a galloping horse (Hippus). The adaptation for our part took one day, the choice of Hippus was carried out according to the width of our hands and length of our fingers, quasi “ to measure ”.

This mouse is also available for the left-handed persons and hands XXXL or XXXS (5 sizes available).

The hand is in resting position and it is quite naturally that one has access to the usual buttons, without pressure because everything on this HIPPUS is treated carefully : light touches are enough, its coating is slightly non-skid and helps to maintain a good position of the hand. And all that is unconstrained, the reaction time to the request is immediate and fast. The use of HIPPUS could be seen as an addiction with wellness : after using it, the hand, the wrist and the arm, the shoulders and the neck seem more relaxed than in the natural at-rest state. www.hippus.nl

La rédaction a fait le choix de vous présenter une toute nouvelle souris appelée « HIPPUS » cf la « UNE » d’Ergonoma Journal , la «CHEVAL souris ». Elle nous vient de Hollande, son développement a été réalisé à la suite de nombreuses études et analyses effectuées par l’Hôpital Universitaire ERASMUS de ROTTERDAM auprès des patients atteints de TMS des membres supérieurs.

A première vue elle ressemble davantage à une raie Manta qu’à un cheval au galop (Hippus). L’adaptation pour notre part à été d’une journée, le choix de Hippus a été réalisé en fonction de la largeur de nos mains et de la longueur de nos doigts, du quasi « sur mesure ». Cette souris est aussi disponible pour les gauchers et les mains XXXL ou XXXS (5 tailles disponibles).

La main est en position de repos et c’est tout naturellement que l’on a accès aux boutons usuels, sans pression car tout sur cette HIPPUS est traité en douceur : de légers effleurements suffisent, son revêtement est légèrement antidérapant ce qui facilite le maintien en bonne position de la main. Et tout cela sans contrainte, son temps de réaction aux sollicitations est immédiat et rapide.

L’utilisation de HIPPUS pourrait s ’apparenter à une addiction au bien être car après son utilisation la main, le poignet et le bras, les épaules et le cou semblent plus relaxés qu’a l’état de repos naturel. www.hippus.nl

Pour en finir avec les TMS : une nouvelle génération de souris.

En France, plus de 30 000 personnes souffriraient de troubles musculo-squelettiques, selon un rapport européen. Des affections qui touchent notamment tous ceux qui travaillent sur ordinateur. En 2006, ils seraient un peu plus de 30 000 patients touchés par ce type d'affections. Un fléau qui a coûté 206,3 millions d'euros en 2004 à la Caisse nationale d'assurancemaladie (Cnam).

L'emploi de la souris peut constituer un facteur de TMS localisé à l'index droit ou gauche et au pouce, si l'opérateur la serre trop fortement. Par ailleurs, une souris trop petite ou trop grande par rapport à la taille de la main peut être responsable de douleurs à l'annulaire et à l'auriculaire. Les souris haut de gamme qui permettent d'avoir une main légèrement inclinée de façon naturelle sont beaucoup plus confortables après des heures d'utilisation.

The Animax Anir mouse Designed as a pilot stick, the mouse encourages a natural vertical hand position with the thumb pointing upwards. The cursor is controlled with the thumb in a natural resting position. The middle button is operated by squeezing the middle fingers. This button can be used for document scrolling in many applications. The mouse comes in two different sizes. Unfortunately there is currently no left hand version available. The mouse uses optical sensors for very precise and accurate reading of the mouse motion. www.animax.no

At last, a study about a mouse on 36 months.

Tests and comparisons have been made both in laboratory and field, showing the differences between Anir mouse and a traditional mouse by four specialists: Arne AARAS, specialist in workplace ergonomics, Dr of Medicin, Alcatel Telecom Norway; Marvin DAINOFF, Professor in Ergonomics, Miami University; Ola RO, Dr of Physics Predmed Oslo; Magne Thoresen, Dr of Biomed Statistics, University of Oslo. The field study included 67 norwegian suffering pain in the shoulder and forearm, having used a traditional mouse for at least 2 years and 2 hours a day, with a mean age of 43 years, ranging from 29 to 61 years, and it lasted three years.

The participants were split in two groups: the intervention group ( ) got Anir mouses and the control group ( ) went on with a traditional mouse. The intensity and duration of pain in shoulder, neck, forearm, and wrist/hand were assessed on a “ Visual Analog Scale ” (VAS), measurement method for pain from 0 to 100 : • with 10-20 = acceptable pain, • with 80-90 = unbearable pain.

After a period of 6 months, the intervention group was significantly less suffering while the control group had no changes. Then the control group was also given Anir mouses, and after 6 more months, this group was also significantly better. The testing went on for another year separately then the two groups were joined ( ) and maintained a low pain level during the whole period.

Le curseur est commandé avec le pouce en position de repos normale. Le bouton du milieu est actionné en serrant les doigts du milieu. Ce bouton peut être utilisé pour le défilement de documents dans beaucoup d'applications. La souris vient dans deux tailles différentes. L’intensité et la durée de la douleur dans l’épaule, le cou, l’avant-bras et le poignet / main ont été évaluées sur une échelle visuelle “Visual Analog Scale” (VAS), méthode de mesure pour la douleur de 0 à 100, avec 10-20 = douleur acceptable et 80-90 = douleur insupportable. Après une période de 6 mois, le groupe d’intervention souffrait sensiblement moins tandis que le groupe de commande n'avait aucun changement. Alors le groupe de commande a également reçu des souris Anir, et après 6 mois supplémentaires, ce groupe était également sensiblement mieux. L’essai a continué pendant une autre année séparément, puis les deux groupes ont été joints ( ) et ont maintenu un niveau bas de douleur pendant toute cette période.

« La Fédération des Sociétés d’Ergonomie européennes (FEES) a été créée il y a 3 ans pour soutenir les actions existantes et pour en encourager de nouvelles sur l'ergonomie en Europe. La FEES - en tant qu'élément de l'Association Ergonomique Internationale (I.A.E.) – est l’organisation qui chapeaute les sociétés ergonomiques nationales qui sont ses membres dans 15 pays d’Europe.

Un accent spécial est mis sur les relations avec l'Union Européenne mais également sur la coopération et la communication entre les membres. »

Quels sont des objectifs de la FEES ?

What does FEES represent in Europe Quelles sont les actions de la FEES pour Ergonomics ? favoriser l'ergonomie en Europe ? “ The Federation of European Ergonomics Societies (FEES) was established some 3 years ago to support existing actions and to encourage new ones on ergonomics in Europe. FEES - as part of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) - is the umbrella organisation of the national ergonomics societies as members in 15 countries in Europe. Major attention is given to the relation with the European Union but also to cooperation and communication between the FEES-members. ”

What are FEES objectives ? What are FEES actions to promote Ergonomics in Europe ? “ FEES supports - under the umbrella of the IEA - the development of ergonomics issues specifically related with the European region by : • enhancing mutual communication between various European ergonomics societies, • encouraging and facilitating contact and exchanges between ergonomists (educators, researchers and/or practitioners), • assisting in the organisation of European conferences about evolving ergonomics, in cooperation with the national societies.

Other objectives are concerned with • enabling the good establishment of ergonomics in EU policy and programmes, • assisting in the access to EU resources and facilities for ergonomics, • stimulating networking in the widest sense for ergonomics. ”

You have now 15 European member societies. What are you expectations in terms of new member societies ? “ The Polish Ergonomics Society most recently joined FEES. The All-Ukrainian Ergonomics Association is now in the process for application of the FEES membership. ”

Why is french SELF not a member ? “ At the start of FEES, it was their decision not to take part. They are a member of IEA anyway. The door is open to them anytime. ”

What is your message to ergonomists all over Europe ? “ We need them and their national societies to back us 100%.

FEES needs the manpower of its members and has an important role to play in the long term. ”

Vous avez maintenant 15 sociétés européennes membres.

Quelles sont vos perspectives actuelles en terme de nouveaux membres ? « La Polish Ergonomics Society vient récemment de rejoindre la FEES. La All-Ukrainian Ergonomics Association a entamé le processus d’adhésion à la FEES. »

Pourquoi la SELF - Société des Ergonomes de Langue Française - n'est-elle pas membre ? « Lors de la création de la FEES, ils ont décidé de ne pas participer. Ils sont membres de l’I.E.A. de toute façon. Notre porte leur est ouverte à tout moment. »

Quel est votre message aux ergonomes partout en Europe ? « Nous avons besoin d’eux et de leurs sociétés nationales pour nous soutenir à 100%. La FEES a besoin du potentiel humain de ses membres et a un rôle important à jouer à long terme. » www.fees-network.org

Attention à leurs pinces ! Tailles minimales : étrille 15 cm, araignée 15 cm.

- Crevettes roses : Se pêchent au havenet, dans les trous d’eau et endroits rocheux abrités. Taille minimale : 3 cm.

- Moules : Se trouvent facilement sur les rochers découverts, en toutes marées, ramasser les plus grosses. Taille minimale : 4 cm.

- Patelles (berniques) et bigorneaux : Choisir ceux placés sous le goémon, détacher les patelles des rochers avec un couteau et les bigorneaux à la main.

- Palourdes et coques : Sont enfouies dans le sable à 10 à 20 cm de profondeur, les coques sont souvent en bancs. Se ramassent au rateau ou à la pelle. Tailles minimales palourdes : 3,5 cm et coques : 3 cm.

- Solens (couteaux) : Sont enfouis dans le sable, se capturent en salant les petits trous à la surface. Taille minimale : 10 cm.
