Welcome to the winter issue of EBC today, our community magazine packed with news stories and top features for people in Erewash. In another successful year Erewash is celebrating winning double-gold for Ilkeston and Long Eaton in the East Midlands in Bloom competition with further recognition for the council’s award winning parks team in retaining Green Flags for our parks and local nature reserves. Congratulations also go to our museum team who have been successful in winning funding from Arts Council England and the Friends of the Museum to help provide outdoor events for creative arts, health and wellbeing and educational activities.

Thanks to our Property and Estates team, Ilkeston’s iconic Toll Bar House which was reopened in September following a major redevelopment project has been highly commended at the recent East Midlands Energy Efficiency Awards. The council continues to work hard to provide efficient and best-value services for our residents with the free community waste collection scheme back by popular demand at collection points throughout the borough on Saturday mornings, helping to keep our borough clean and free of fly-tipping. As we head into winter what is crucial now is that everyone takes up the opportunity to get vaccinated. The COVID-19 booster jab and flu vaccine will increase your immunity and will help keep our communities safe. It’s never too late to be vaccinated, just

A Christmas message
It is my absolute honour, as the Mayor of Erewash, to share a Christmas message with everyone, in all corners of our wonderful borough. I am acutely aware that we have faced such difficult times, particularly at the height of the pandemic – times we could never have imagined. My heart goes out to all those who suffered and are still suffering from the effects of COVID-19.
But I would like to focus on the positives that this year has brought and the hope and light that Christmas can bring. The festive period is a special time of year and it is my dearest wish that this year families and friends can be together to celebrate and enjoy a safe and peaceful time.
We have seen a gradual return to being able to live our lives again and I have seen first hand the rich community spirit we have in our communities. I have met many people and attended events that have created memories I will remember forever. I would like to thank all those who are working for us throughout the festive period - the NHS, the emergency services, our armed forces and all who keep us safe and secure. My gratitude as well goes to the volunteers and carers who give their time all year round to make such a positive difference to the lives of so many of our residents. I hope you will join me at our Civic Christmas Eve Carol Service at Ilkeston Market Place at 7pm - I look forward to meeting you all.
Museum’s garden plans A project to develop historic parts of Erewash Museum’s gardens could provide a new outdoor events platform for creative arts, health and wellbeing and educational activities. Members of Erewash Borough Council’s Executive were due to meet at the end of last month and were expected to confirm their support for £67,712 of project funding from Arts Council England and a further £20,000 match funding from the Friends of Erewash Museum. The grant money covers Phase 1 of a proposed two-stage development at the Grade II listed museum. The whole project follows the discovery that a vaulted ha-ha in the grounds was collapsing and in need of extensive work.

Phase 1 - called “Erewash Valley, Past, Present and Future” - features activities to help the museum rebuild audience levels following the impact of COVID-19 and also includes the recruitment of a part-time Community Curator officer.
Erewash Borough Council will once again be providing a festive gift to local residents through its Christmas free parking scheme in all of its car parks from 18 December to 3 January inclusive.
The council also plans to submit a funding bid this month to the National Lottery Heritage Fund (HLF) to complete the development through Phase 2
The free parking will start at 10am daily and is aimed at helping traders by encouraging residents to do all their seasonal shopping at local shops and markets. The free parking is not available at Long Eaton Railway Station commuter car park.
It is hoped that work on Phase 1 and 2 could begin in the spring providing the HLF funding bid is successful and is then approved by the council. Phase 2 would continue the redevelopment of the gardens. A vaulted ha-ha is a type of sunken store that was commonly used in landscaped gardens and parks in the 18th century.

Community-minded residents are being invited to join Erewash Borough Council’s online consultation panel to share their views on a wide range of topics. Any Erewash resident aged 16 or over can sign up to the panel, which is a valuable resource for the council in getting important feedback and helping shape projects, policies and initiatives across the borough.
The application will follow an online public consultation carried out by landowners Verdant Regeneration, who bought part of the former Stanton Ironworks site at the end of last year. Verdant drafted proposals for a regeneration ‘Masterplan’ of the brownfield site off Lows Lane in Ilkeston and asked the public for their views during the consultation, which ended on 5 November. The survey for the site included plans to provide around 260,000 square metres of employment space, with hopes of creating a significant number of new jobs. In the consultation, Verdant also included the proposed use of the existing rail line and a new rail spur; retention of approximately 50 4

Avoid glitter and foil at all costs! Use wrapping paper that is recyclable. Tear off any tape, glitter, ribbon etc. Also consider switching to sending festive greetings via email and social media.

Stanton - next step expected A planning application on the development of New Stanton Park is expected to be submitted to Erewash Borough Council by the end of this year.

Tree-mendous
Three hundred bush apple and pear trees were given away to Erewash residents during the annual free giveaway in Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres this month. Organised by the council’s Pride in Erewash team, residents received one bush tree per household.
Popular waste service back the borough every Saturday morning between 8am and 11.30am to give residents a chance to dispose of their waste for free.
The free community household waste collections in Erewash for small bulky waste are back by popular demand and continue to be a massive hit with residents. The service sees Erewash Borough Council staff at two collection points in

New era at Toll Bar by Erewash Borough Council and is being managed by Erewash Partnership.
Ilkeston’s iconic Toll Bar House, which was officially opened in September following a major redevelopment project, is already bringing new opportunities for small businesses in Erewash. The building boasts 27 offices – along with shared meeting rooms and other facilities - and so far 16 offices have been let in the art deco landmark, which is owned
The council invested £425,000 and together with its partners – including major funder D2N2 and project contractors J Tomlinson - have seen the £976,000 project transform the building into an energy efficient building to help combat climate change. Don’t mess up The clocks have gone back and irresponsible dog owners are once again hiding behind the cover of winter darkness. Erewash Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Warden Service has renewed appeals for those ‘can’t be bothered’ dog owners to change their ways and pick up the poop. It is hoped that local residents will continue to help the council’s dog wardens crackdown on the menace by getting in touch with as many details as possible of any known offenders – including the locations and regular walk pattern times. Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment, says: “All of us - including responsible dog owners – are outraged that
some people think it’s acceptable to leave dog mess. Well, it isn’t and we hope if you are an owner who does this you will look at yourself and change your ways. “We need proof to be able to deal with any offender and that’s where we need the public’s help so we can target patrols.”

The service shows up as Long Eaton Free Wi-Fi and is part of the Long Eaton Town Centre project, which won nearly £25m in the summer when the government backed plans to drive the town forward over the next decade. Free Wi-fi is aimed at encouraging people to spend more time in the town and covers High Street, Market Place, Cross Street and part of Tamworth Road.

Beware of COVID Pass FRAUD Free lateral flow test kits, which offer rapid tests for COVID-19, are still available for any residents calling in to Ilkeston or Long Eaton Town Hall receptions. Erewash Borough Council was keen to increase the availability of the kits for residents and has also joined forces with Derbyshire County Council to trial more support for local people who may have questions about the testing process. The move means a public health officer from the County Council will be based one day a week at both town halls to be able to advise and answer any queries from residents. The officer will be at Long Eaton on Mondays and at Ilkeston on Thursdays. Kits are also available at various outlets – including some pharmacies and libraries and can be ordered online at gov.uk

All the fun of the fair It was back and people showed their delight by flocking in their thousands to welcome the 769th Ilkeston Charter Fair, which once again brought colour and life to the town centre as it stretched out from the Market Place along all the surrounding streets. After the disappointment of last year’s cancellation due to the pandemic, local residents and visitors from further afield were clearly keen to show their gratitude at its return and people of all ages were able to enjoy all the fun of the fair! The historic fair, run by the Showmen’s Guild, is one of the oldest and largest street fairs in Europe and it was given the traditional ceremonial opening by the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Donna Briggs, watched by civic guests, showmen and local families. Children from Brackenfield School in Long Eaton also joined the ceremony to display a celebration Fair Banner they had created. Leader of Erewash Borough Council, Councillor Carol Hart, said: “The Charter Fair really is a magnificent event. We thank all our partners for helping us make it happen, and make it happen safely, in 2021. “My thanks as well go to the public, who were overwhelmingly supportive of our decision to hold the fair again.” 9
We are the champions! Erewash celebrated its flower power success again after its award winning towns Ilkeston and Long Eaton both struck gold in the Large Town category of East Midlands in Bloom. The medal-winning top spots are testament to the hard work of Erewash Borough Council’s parks teams, who produced stunning displays despite the challenging times and ensured the blooms lifted everyone’s spirits. Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of the Council, said: “The summer planting is always inspirational – its inportance this year was beyond what we could have ever imagined, by providing a much-needed feel good factor after everything we have been through. My congratulations to our staff and the community volunteers who work so hard.” Special Judges’ awards were presented to Long Eaton’s Wilsthorpe Road Allotment Holders and the Friends of Ilkeston’s Victoria Park.
Victoria Park received a Horticultural Excellence within Parks award and there was a Best New Permanent Landscape honour for the reworking of the historic landscaping around Long Eaton Town Hall.

Play underway An all-new Larklands Play Area for families in Ilkeston is scheduled to be completed and open shortly – weather permitting. Work began on the new fun-packed site in late October when old and outdated equipment was removed. Parents and local residents chose the design for the new play area that will feature a range of up-to-date equipment.

Organised by the local branches of the Royal British Legion, the Remembrance Sunday events featured parish church services, parades and the laying of wreaths at the war memorials. The Mayor, Councillor Donna Briggs, says: “It was an honour to be with everyone to pay our respects to those who have given their lives in the service of this country. We must never forget.”

Erewash Borough Council is appealing to residents – and particularly young people – to take up the covid jab as the fight continues against the virus. It is essential that everyone plays their part, so please have the vaccination and the council is urging people to encourage others, young and old, to do the same. The vaccines are safe and effective and are your best protection against becoming seriously ill from the virus. You can get your COVID-19 vaccination by booking online or by visiting a walk-in vaccination clinic. Booster vaccines and 3rd doses are also available on the NHS for people most at risk from the disease who have already had two doses of a vaccine. Let’s celebrate good times! Covid-19 had a massive impact on the events calendar last year, with some of the biggest crowd-pullers falling victim to the pandemic. But the disapointment changed to celebrations this year when popular events that light up our borough returned to a rapturous welcome. From family-themed activities at our award winning Erewash Museum through to the return of the historic Ilkeston Charter Fair and the Bonfire and Firework spectacular – it was good to see the smiles and good times back in the borough.

Small Steps to Health The instructors were able to use their skills during lockdown with ‘virtual’ calls that has enabled them to develop a Small Steps to Health falls prevention programme. Fibro Active has now added Sun Style Short Form Tai Chi, Yang Style Tai Chi and British Health Qigong classes to its programme. The Fibro Active team in Long Eaton has sent out a thank you to Erewash Borough Council for its Community Grants fund award which has helped take the group forward. Their successful application for £2,000 meant two leading members of the group – chair person Julie Barker and Jane Gordon – were able to attend the British Health Qigong Association Instructor Course.
A new class Small Steps to Health is designed to help people of all ages and abilities to strengthen their leg muscles and walk mindfully. A full programme and classes can be found at: fibroactive.co.uk
Making an impact The Citizens Advice team in Erewash has worked throughout the pandemic to help residents as much as possible. The team’s latest six month update, running from April to September, shows that more than 9,500 issues were tackled for clients who got in touch, whose ages ranged from the under 25s through to residents aged 65+ - the largest percentage. Issues included benefits, tax credits and Universal Credit – the biggest area – and worries over debt, employment, health and community care, housing and relationships. The team’s face to face advice returned in May this year and they are now seeing a steady increase in clients returning to visit the drop in services. Remote virtual advice remains on offer for clients who may still feel uncomfortable being helped in person but benefit from the face to face experience via a computer. The 14
Citizens Advice service continues to be supported by Erewash Borough Council. Melanie Mallinson, Senior Operations Manager for Citizens Advice Derbyshire Districts, says: “This latest report outlines the great work taking place locally. Crowning glory The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Donna Briggs, the Leader of the Council, Councillor Carol Hart, and local borough councillors were among more than 50 guests due to attend the presentation of the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service to the Fibro Active Group at the end of November. The royal honour was expected to be presented at Long Eaton’s Petersham Hall Community Centre by the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill. Group leaders, volunteers and members celebrated the award and prepared a Tai Chi demonstration for guests.
A helping hand Erewash Borough Council is keen to make everyone aware of the Derbyshire Home from Hospital Support Service. The free service provides support for vulnerable people leaving hospital or those at risk of being admitted. Support on offer includes providing help with shopping, arranging for safety measures to be installed, collecting prescriptions and helping people find out about community activities and other assistance on offer. Very cold weather can affect anyone, but you are most vulnerable if you are elderly and/or disabled, on a low income, have a long-term health condition or have young children. So here’s some tips on being prepared for the cold weather and saving energy costs. Keep your home warm
Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes. Draught proof gaps around windows and doors.
Contact your GP or pharmacist about a free flu jab. Wear several layers of clothes rather than one chunky layer. Wear shoes with good grip to prevent slips and falls outside.

Stay active, get up and move around your home; even moderate exercise can keep you warm.

It was a summer of success in Sawley for activities provided for young people through the feelgood Vibez programme.
Make sure you receive your Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payments if eligible.
One of the areas benefiting this year was Sawley where the programme funded five Friday night sessions at Sawley Park, including penalty shoot-outs and pizza in the park. The sessions were supported by young people from Sawley Youth Club. Councillor Val Clare, Lead Member for Community Engagement, says: “Vibez provides excellent activities for young people. I know in Sawley that over 100 youngsters took part in the sessions.”

Making active strides
Working in our communities to get people of all ages more active is a key priority for Erewash Borough Council’s health and wellbeing drive. Our Sport and Health Development team includes two Community Activators - Jen Rawson and Kathleen Taylor - who are heading up two important projects. Jen has been responsible for the Active Lives in Kirk Hallam project
and Kathleen is developing the new Walk Derbyshire scheme throughout Erewash.

Walk Derbyshire involves free volunteer-led walks that provide low intensity exercise suitable for all ages and abilities. There are currently four walks starting from Ilkeston’s Victoria Park Leisure Centre; Long Eaton Town Hall; Stanley Post Office; and Sandiacre Library.
Jen has been working in Kirk Hallam with partner organisations and the community to promote a healthier and happier life for residents of all ages. The work aims to be inclusive and offer support on things like food poverty, finances, education, health conditions and disabilities.
Councillor Paul Maginnis Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, says: “New volunteers to lead walks are always needed and will receive training and support from the Walk Derbyshire Scheme.”
The Kirk Hallam Community Centre has been key to the Active Lives Kirk Hallam project. A key project developed was 1200 activity boxes designed, created, and handed out to local 3-10 year olds.

Erewash Borough Council supports eco-friendly moves that help the drive for our borough to be more environmentally friendly.

Everyone has a responsibility to play their part and the festive season is a key time to remind ourselves of the small steps we can take. As such, the council is issuing this appeal for all residents to take personal responsibility to dispose of waste sensibly this Christmas holiday. Please do not dump waste and leave it for someone else to sort. Bins at recycling sites in Erewash are usually emptied every day except the Bank Holidays, but the West Park recycling site in Long Eaton often sees a large number of visits on Boxing Day to dispose of gift boxes and other festive recyclable waste.

Unfortunately, some irresponsible residents dump Christmas waste at the sites, not even breaking down cardboard to fit into recycling bins - causing an environmentally damaging eyesore. Once this happens, other people cannot then get to the recycling bins to properly dispose of their waste. The council appeals to householders to show support for recycling by visiting recycling sites responsibly but also consider keeping waste aside until their usual recycling collections at home.
