Welcome to the spring issue of EBC today as we look forward to the celebrations to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The council has a number of events planned including a royal Beating Retreat and Beacon Lighting in Ilkeston and Long Eaton, as well as helping to fund street parties throughout the borough.

It is also with great pride that Ilkeston has been shortlisted for this year’s national Britain in Bloom awards after winning a gold medal in the East Midlands in Bloom competition last year – a great achievement for the council’s parks team.

As part of the council’s effort in renewing our town centres the Levelling Up Fund consultation for Ilkeston is up and running and we would like as many residents and businesses to get involved in the bid to secure up to £20m of investment.

The council continues to support businesses following the pandemic with a number of grants in what has been an extremely difficult period – hopefully the reduction of Omicron cases and the lifting of restrictions will help businesses across our borough return to a new normal.

The council continues to work hard to provide efficient and best-value services for our residents even though the council continues to face pressures caused by the pandemic.

We have kept the council tax rise to a minimum of £5 per annum, an increase of just 10p a week, and also have a council tax support scheme in place to help those in need.

We know that outdoor spaces are important to our residents with recent investment made to update the Larklands play area in Ilkeston, the development of a new play area for Long Eaton’s Petersham estate and proposals for improvements to the Granby Park play area in Cotmanhay.

Carol Hart, Leader of the Council I would like to congratulate the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct for all their good work in restoring the iconic structure and opening it up for local people and visitors to enjoy – look out for a new exhibition at Erewash Museum about the viaduct and its history.

As we move into spring it’s time to start thinking about all things green with Erewash in Bloom due to launch next month, so let’s get going and make the borough as colourful as possible with spectacular displays for everyone to enjoy.

Finally, the council’s parks team will be adding some ‘royal’ colour with a return of the popular Union Jack floral displays in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Mayor’s Awards

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Donna Briggs, says: “I know there are lots of people across the borough who will be worthy of recognition, including those who have helped others and shown kindness throughout the pandemic. If you know someone who would be a worthy winner then get nominating so that their achievements can be celebrated.”

Erewash Borough Council is calling on its residents to nominate someone they admire for their valuable voluntary work in the borough. The popular Mayor’s Awards salute those who go the extra mile and deserve a pat on the back for their tireless work for the community.

Nominations are now open for the annual awards ahead of the closing date of Friday 25 March, with the presentation of awards due to take place on Thursday 28 April.

Royal times

This stunning Royal Emblem embroidery has been presented to Erewash Borough Council by Tom McDonald of Hucknall-based civic specialist Spurcroft Civic and is a fitting tribute for the Queen’s platinum year.

A framed copy of the piece will be hung in the reception areas at Ilkeston and Long Eaton Town Halls for visitors to view.

The countdown is underway to events that will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Erewash Borough Council is offering small grants for street parties held over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

See page 11 for details and information on Beacon Lighting events and the return of the patriotic planting. We also take a look back to royal celebrations of the past on pages 12-13.

Council Tax

A recommendation that Erewash Borough Council raises its share of council tax for 2022/23 by 2.54% - a £5 per annum increase - was expected to be approved at the council’s budget setting meeting.

It means that the council’s charge for a band D property will increase from £196.59 to £201.59 per annum, an increase of 10p a week.

The expected increase comes as the council continues to face pressures caused by the pandemic.

Continuing uncertainty of additional costs and reduced income due to the impact of covid-19 means setting budgets is challenging.

The delay in any changes to how much business rates revenue councils can retain, along with the unknown factor of how many businesses impacted by the pandemic will recover, make forecasting future income levels even more uncertain.

Councillor Wayne Major, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Resources, says: “We have been a strong and robust council with a healthy financial record.

I can assure everyone that we will continue that hard work as we face new challenges. We are committed to ensuring that Erewash remains strong.”

Only 11% of the total council tax bill that residents pay goes to the Borough Council. The rest is for services provided by Derbyshire County Council, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and Parish Councils – Erewash has no control over the charges set by these organisations.

Landmark reopens after 50 years Bennerley Viaduct has reopened as a route for walkers and cyclists - 54 years after closing to freight traffic and 58 years since the last passenger travelled across it.

volunteers who formed in 2015 and have spent the last seven years working with local communities and the wider public to support and promote the scheme.

Crowds of people walked across the magnificent Iron Giant on its first opening weekend in January to celebrate the new life of the famous landmark.

Work has included repair and restoration work on the Victorian structure, the installation of a new full length deck and access for users.

At the Ilkeston end a fully accessible ramp leads from the Erewash Canal towpath to the new deck. Access from the Awsworth side is currently by steps. The Friends plan to explore ways of creating a second ramp so that users of mobility scooters and wheelchairs can gain access from both ends.

The iconic structure, owned by Railway Paths Ltd (RPL), has an international following after it became the only British site to be included on the World Monuments Fund Watch List in 2020.

The successful project to restore and re-purpose the viaduct has been a labour of love through a partnership between RPL and the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct, dedicated

A good day out

Bridging the Gap The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct (FoBV) will begin the next chapter in the Iron Giant’s story this month after the group successfully gained a £250,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Called Bridging the Gap, the new two-year project will develop the viaduct and its surrounding area as a community asset and a visitor attraction. The Friends aim to reach a wider range of people and plans include offering training and learning opportunities to create a greater wellbeing effect.

The grant will allow the FoBV to employ three staff - a Project Manager, a Heritage Engagement Officer and a site Ranger. It will 4

also help the group to manage the attraction and take on projects in the future, such as a fully accessible ramp at the eastern end and the construction of a visitor centre.

Erewash Museum has built close links with the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct and will play a key role in the further development and promotion of the attraction.

Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, says: “Congratulations to the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct who have been outstanding in their work to bring this ‘sleeping giant’ back to life. It is an amazing achievement and their enthusiasm and desire to move on to this next stage is wonderful. Well done on achieving the funding to enable you to do that.”

The museum will act as a visitor hub, with exciting plans for an exhibition and illustrated talks about the viaduct and its history.

The plan is for visitors to go to the museum, where there is also a tea room and other exhibitions that visitors can enjoy, as part of their trip to see the viaduct.

There are good bus services to Cotmanhay via the town centre. The ramp to the viaduct is a short walk from the bus stop at Bridge Street in Cotmanhay.

Marching on Thousands of pounds of grants will reach businesses across Erewash thanks to a series of government funding schemes, that closed at the end of February.

Erewash Borough Council’s teams have been busy processing the applications for support for businesses affected by the pandemic, with all payments due to be sent out before the end of this month.

Eligible businesses have applied for support via five programmes: The Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant - one-off grants, with payments dependent on the rateable value of premises.

The Omicron Additional Restrictions Grant for businesses affected by covid but that did not qualify for the Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant.

Manufacturing Grant to support businesses in the manufacturing sector that have suffered adversely from the effects of Covid-19. Grants of up to £15,000 were available to fund projects that could safeguard and create new jobs.

Covid era Start-up Grants offering small awards of up to £5,000 for businesses that started trading during the pandemic but have struggled to establish themselves due to its impact.

The Covid-19 Additional Relief Fund (CARF), a rate relief scheme for local businesses outside of the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors that have not so far received government funding to help with the impact of covid.

We thank all businesses, large and small and in all sectors, for working with us to get this latest round of support sorted.

We understand the struggles that many businesses face and we applaud your strength and determination.”

Council officers worked closely with Erewash Partnership to develop the new schemes offering grants to the manufacturing sector and startup businesses and the Partnership will continue to be involved to offer support for successful applicants.

Rural delights The survey results will help shape a marketing campaign by MPDD aimed at increasing visitor numbers to attractions and businesses.

It will also help the council monitor how this sector evolves in the future and help it improve the range, quality, and number of rural recreation opportunities for Erewash residents and visitors to the borough.

Support your market

Residents took part in an Erewash Visitor Survey to find out what current and potential users think of the borough’s rural recreation facilities such as heritage sites, conservation areas, hospitality outlets and leisure facilities.

Part of Erewash Borough Council’s Rural Recreation Project, the survey was led by Marketing Peak District Derbyshire (MPDD) on a countywide level.

Appalling waste Miss Day pleaded guilty to the offence at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court and was fined £120, must pay a victim surcharge of £34 and council costs of £991, including clean-up costs of £506. Magistrates told her that dumping the waste was appalling and that it should not be left to the local council to clean up fly-tipped waste.

A 31-year-old Long Eaton woman was made to pay a total of £1,145 following a successful fly-tipping prosecution by Erewash Borough Council.

Ishka Day, of Walton Street, failed to use an authorised person to dispose of her waste which was traced back to her after evidence containing her contact details was found in waste dumped on Wilne Lane, Draycott in June last year.

In 2021 Erewash Borough Council dealt with more than 400 fly-tipping incidents, double the amount of 2020.

It costs the council around £15,000 each year to clear up fly-tipping in the borough.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment, says: “This case shows once again the importance of checking that the person you pay to dispose of your waste is licensed. We don’t enjoy prosecuting residents, but as a council we take fly-tipping very seriously and we will take action whenever possible.”

A community success The council’s free community household waste collection scheme continues to be a success with more than 37 tonnes of materials collected.

The 18-week scheme, for small bulky waste items, saw collection points at two locations in the borough on a Saturday morning with council staff on site to assist residents with heavy items.

The latest collections took place on 5 March at Kirk Hallam and Stanley Village.

The scheme was created in 2018 to help, in particular, people who don’t live near a household recycling centre. It is for smaller bulky waste items, such as toasters and damaged or unwanted toys, which would not be collected as part of the council’s chargeable bulky waste collections.

The latest statistics show that between 23 October 2021 and 22 January 2022, around 35 tonnes of waste and recycling was collected, and around 2.5 tonnes of electrical waste.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment, said: “The free community household waste collections have been popular since they started four years ago and we have had some great feedback from residents who have used them, including excellent praise for the on-site staff.”

Materials that don’t get recycled are used for refuse derived fuel, which is used to create steam, turn turbines and create electricity.

Onwards

Erewash residents and businesses are being asked for their views on a five-year strategy to take the borough’s economic growth forward.

A public consultation is underway on Erewash Borough Council’s Economic Development Strategy 2022–27 – a working plan that looks at ensuring the borough’s economy takes advantage of opportunities on offer.

The strategy looks at town centre regeneration, the rural economy, the importance of green space recreation and supporting business growth.

Councillor Michael Powell, Lead Member for Regeneration and Planning, says: “We need to set down the key priorities for economic growth in Erewash. Our draft plan does just that, but it is important that residents and businesses get involved to give us their views. It will be the platform for the council to help meet all our aspirations.”

It is vital that the local community works with the council to draw up ambitious but practical ideas that are part of the continuing challenge to regenerate the town centre.

Ilkeston residents and local businesses are being urged to step up and join forces with Erewash Borough Council to help shape a realistic bid for government funding to invest in the town.

The council has launched the first part of a two-stage consultation in its drive to tap in to up to £20m through the government’s nationwide Levelling Up initiative.

Residents, community organisations and businesses have until 5pm

Councillor Bryn Lewis, Lead Member for Town Centres, says: “Our mission is to make this happen. We have a marvellous opportunity to bid for funding, a real opportunity of making a difference.

In this first step, we need to find out what really matters to the people of Ilkeston.”

Stanton decision

The proposed redevelopment 0f 70 hectares at the former Stanton Ironworks site will be decided at a special meeting of Erewash Borough Council’s Planning Committee, hopefully this summer.

Verdant Ltd, a partnership of local firms Ward Recycling and Trust Utilities, want to regenerate the land to provide 4,000 jobs. A rail hub to the Erewash Valley line is also proposed.

As part of the application, the fishing ponds and lakes alongside Ilkeston Road and the Nutbrook Trail would be enhanced.

Once the survey results have been reviewed, proposals will be developed and a second consultation held.

Ilkeston in the final in Surrey; Portishead in Somerset; Prestatyn in Denbighshire; and Mirfield in Yorkshire.

The RHS Britain in Bloom judges will visit this summer with the winners announced in the autumn.

Ilkeston is celebrating good times after being shortlisted for the UK finals of the Britain in Bloom competition.

The town won an impressive Gold in East Midlands in Bloom last year and is now a finalist to compete for the overall national 2022 title.

Ilkeston is up against seven other finalists to win the national Large Town category – Dunstable in Bedfordshire; Workington in Cumbria; Congleton in Cheshire; Farnham

Ilkeston – and indeed Long Eaton – consistently win the top honours in East Midlands in Bloom thanks to the outstanding floral displays created by our team and the support of the local community.

Both Ilkeston and Long Eaton retained their Gold medals in the regional competition last year, a massive achievement amidst the challenges of the pandemic.

Draycott’s volunteer In Bloom group is also celebrating being shortlisted for the national finals and will be competing against four other finalists from across the country in the Large Village category.

It’s playtime!

Foundation, a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund. The council also contributed funding and is grateful to Ilkeston Parents for Play and Kensington Junior Academy in Ilkeston for their vital support.

The all-new Larklands Play Area in Ilkeston is packed full of fun thanks to exciting up-to-date equipment that includes a track ride glider, multi-play towers, swings and a wheelchair roundabout.

The project follows Erewash Borough Council’s bid for £70,000 of funding from the FCC Communities

The council is also reviewing results of a public survey to choose the design for a new play area on the Petersham green space off Briar Gate in Long Eaton.

The site, which will be funded by the council, will also feature safety fencing and hydraulic selfclosing gates and is expected to be completed during the summer.

Fitting it out Ilkeston residents are to be asked for their views on improvements to the Granby Park play area in Cotmanhay.

Erewash Borough Council has a £34,000 moneypot and is keen to hear the thoughts of families on proposals that include improved play facilities or the addition of outdoor fitness/gym equipment at the site.

The funding is thanks to Section 106 monies, contributions made by developers as part of planning agreements – in this case the recent housing developments on Cotmanhay Road, Ilkeston and on the former site of the Commercial Inn, Ilkeston.

Have pride

It’s nearly time! Erewash Borough Council’s annual gardening competition Erewash in Bloom opens on Tuesday 25th April.

There are also categories for pubs and restaurants, communal areas and friends groups, school gardens and shops and businesses.

The Pride in Erewash competition will follow the same format as last year, with gardeners able to submit five photographs per category – with a range of awards on offer including best front and rear gardens, best hanging baskets, best allotment sites and a fun tallest sunflower contest for children.

It’s always good to celebrate the great outdoors, so here’s a reminder that Erewash has five Green Flag sites – making them the best of the best!

The sponsorship fee is currently £102 per year (based on a 3 year contract) and covers all costs.

Are you game? The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Donna Briggs, hosts her fundraising Walking Football Tournament at Long Eaton United FC’s Grange Park ground on Friday 8 April – and there’s still time for teams to sign up for this family fun event.

Kick-off is at 6.30pm and all money raised will go to the Mayor’s chosen charities, Treetops Hospice, the Canaan Trust and the Long Eaton and District Talking Newspaper for the Blind. Teams should be made up of six people of all abilities plus substitute players, with competition entry costing £10 per player.

Councillor Briggs says the event will be a sporting highlight: “Do sign up or come along for a family-friendly evening when we can celebrate being outdoors and enjoy a sport that is fantastic for people of all ages and abilities.

Decide on your favourites and cheer them on!”

Walking football is aimed at all members of the community, regardless of age, gender, mobility or disability or those who are simply less active than they used to be.

Volunteers

Promoting and protecting our environment is a key priority for Erewash Borough Council and our volunteers continue to support us by helping plant trees or maintaining green spaces.

Photos show some of the brilliant band at West Park in Long Eaton after planting disease-resistant Elms and other trees along the main avenue.

Residents were also keen to plant life-enhancing fruit trees in their own gardens and snapped up free bush apple and pear trees at the council’s giveaway events.

Among the many other events, volunteers pruned hedges and trees and cleared overhanging branches at Ilkeston’s Trowell Marsh Local Nature Reserve.

Right up our street!

Street Party celebrations will be a royal highlight of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee festivities in June – and Erewash Borough Council has a grants hotpot to help local residents planning a knees-up over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Groups and individuals have until 5pm on Thursday 14 April to apply for money to help fund traditional street parties in the borough.

Bunting, balloons and everything red, white and blue are expected to mark the Queen’s 70th landmark, which sees her honoured as the longest reigning monarch in British history during the extended bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

Councillor Carol Hart, Leader the Council, says: “This will be a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate an incredible 70-year reign of a British monarch.”

The council has also scrapped the usual road closure charges for any royal street party celebrations – although an application for a Road Closure Order must still be made by 5pm on Friday 6 May. Full details at erewash.gov.uk/streetparties or email colin.handley@erewash.gov.uk

Beacon salutes Erewash will join the nation in lighting Beacons to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with patriotic events being held in Ilkeston Market Place and in the grounds of Long Eaton Town Hall on Thursday 2 June.

It’s hoped residents will turn out in force to celebrate the momentous occasion. Both events get underway at 8pm ahead of the beacons being lit at 9.15pm.

A riot of patriotism

In Ilkeston Johnny Victory will be singing tunes from the last 70 years while in Long Eaton the Silver Prize Band will be performing some catchy numbers.

After watching the lighting ceremony, the evening will end with some patriotic tunes for the crowds to join in with and wave their flags.

The popular Union Jack floral displays return this summer as part of the borough’s Platinum salute.

More than 15,000 plants in total will make up the stunning flags at the five-bed White Lion Square roundabout in Ilkeston and Long Eaton’s Wilsthorpe Road traffic island and Waverley Street display bed.

The red, white and blue theme will continue with plants in the hanging and barrier baskets across the borough.

Bedding plants are grown in peat free compost at the greenhouses in West Park, Long Eaton.

Enjoy Local Music Live The event is being staged thanks to a grant from the government’s Welcome Back Fund, a national initiative funded through the European Regional Development Fund aimed at projects to support the safe return to high streets after the pandemic challenges.

A free celebration of music and the arts will be the focus of a two-day festival-style event for all the family at Erewash Museum this month.

The Soul and Flair ‘Local Music Live’ event takes place on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 March and will turn the spotlight on local talent, with the lineup including performances by local bands, choirs and theatre groups.

Friday’s programme will run from 10.30am-5.30pm, with artist led workshops for pre-school age children in the morning followed by afternoon activities for school age youngsters. There will also be small break out shows with folk and cultural music for adults.

Local food charity Everyone Eats is attending and offering free lunch bags, filled with food sourced from shops in Ilkeston. Independent shops and charities will also be promoting their work.

Coronavirus restrictions meant the museum – which is just off Ilkeston Market Place - was closed for long periods of time and Local Music Live is a way of continuing the work of welcoming back visitors to its activities and to the town centre.

It’s free and it’s back

The free garden waste collections have now resumed across the borough after the usual temporary suspension over the winter.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment, says: “Spring is round the corner and gardeners are already out there clearing the debris of winter and taking full advantage of our free brown bin collections.”

CVS Grant Scheme Community groups and not-for-profit organisations in need of a cash boost are being encouraged to apply for up to £1,500 of funding from the Erewash Small Grant Scheme.

The scheme, run in conjunction with Erewash Voluntary Action, is funded by Erewash Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council Public Health and Derbyshire County Council Adult Care Services.

It has three priority themes - health inequalities; community wellness, and building resilience - and applicants must meet at least one of the themes to be eligible to apply.

Applications can be made at any time and there are no deadlines.

Fresh air news Two air quality zones in the borough which have been managed for their pollution levels over the last 20 years are to be lifted.

The orders – that ran alongside the M1 corridor in Long Eaton and Sandiacre - can be revoked after a detailed assessment confirmed that nitrogen dioxide levels in both areas are now consistently and significantly below the national air quality objective.

Levels have been falling over recent years, mainly due to the many improvement measures carried out to the M1 stretch, particularly around Junction 25.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment, says: “This is welcome news, especially to those who have

lived in the two zones. Regular monitoring and much hard work with our partners has ensured this outcome. I can also assure residents that monitoring will remain in place to keep a check on pollution levels.”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has supported the lifting of the orders.

Across the borough, the council has a network of sites monitoring nitrogen dioxide emissions to ensure that they do not reach the national air quality objective levels.

A total of 672 monitoring tubes are analysed each year as part of the council’s air quality monitoring programme.

Moving times Local people had registered for an affordable home through the Home Options Choice Based Lettings scheme. The homes include two, three and four-bedroomed houses as well as bungalows for people with physical disabilities.

A welcome 45 new affordable homes were completed in Ilkeston in 2021.

Housing associations Tuntum/ NCHA and Platform as well as their partners faced the challenges of shortages, adverse weather conditions and delays caused by the pandemic.

So it was cause for celebration when residents moved into their new homes at Beauvale Drive/ Church Street; Green Lane/ Concorde Close and Stratford Street North in the town.

Fifteen new flats and houses are also due to be completed this Spring by Futures Housing at Bath Street, Ilkeston.

Erewash Borough Council has helped identify the type of homes most needed, suitable sites and provided additional funding where appropriate.

Support is vital

Erewash Borough Council’s ongoing work to tackle rough sleeping continues to hit the mark.

The council played a leading role to win funding for the Derbyshire and Staffordshire Moorlands Rough Sleeping Partnership in 2019.

One of the ways the council measures the level of rough sleeping is through an annual count, most recently carried out in November last year. There was nobody found to be sleeping rough in the borough during this count compared with 11 in 2019.

Councillor Paul Maginnis, Lead Member for Health and Well Being, says: “We are well aware this does not mean that rough sleeping has been ended in Erewash - but it is very welcome news.

“We are committed to continuing our work with all our partners to help those who find themselves sleeping on the streets or are at risk of doing so.”

Across the Partnership area, the number of people sleeping rough is now less than a third of what it was two years ago, showing that the countywide services that Erewash was instrumental in setting up are having a real and positive effect on the lives of some of the most vulnerable residents.

Erewash Borough Council runs a Council Tax Support (CTS) scheme which offers payment help for those most in need.

Anyone who has to pay Council Tax and who is on a low income can apply to see if they are eligible for support, regardless of whether they are retired, unemployed or in full or part-time work.

The CTS scheme was due to be confirmed again at this month’s full council meeting. A report to councillors said the take-up of the scheme has increased significantly during the pandemic.

An online Derbyshire antisocial behaviour (ASB) hub is available for all Erewash residents and features a wide range of information on ASB including how organisations tackle the issues and the support that is available to anyone experiencing ASB.

Helping hand

Luckily, organisations who work to tackle ASB can help and advise.

They consider a lot of factors when dealing with reports of ASB such as: - Whether it is or isn’t ASB; - The level of seriousness and frequency of the behaviour; - The impact that the behaviour is having on others; and, - Why someone is experiencing the ASB, and whether we need to take additional steps to support them.

Initially, the advice is that if the problem is not too serious, try talking to the person. They may not realise they are causing a nuisance. Be calm and friendly, explain what the problem is and how it affects you. Listen to the other person and try to reach an agreement.

Safer Communities

Support the young The one-to-ones were focused on fun activities to increase the confidence and wellbeing of the young person, preparing them for exiting lockdown and phasing back into school and everyday life.

A borough-wide project to help vulnerable young people who were facing further struggles during the pandemic and lockdowns has shown the success of partnership working.

Community sports charity StreetGames secured nearly £38,000 from the Youth Endowment Fund for an intensive programme of support for 30 targeted young people.

Councillor Paul Maginnis, Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, says: “It became clear during the pandemic that young people, especially vulnerable young people, were suffering greatly.

This programme was a powerful way to reach those most in need and give them a new belief in themselves.”

Derbyshire County Council’s Early Help Team and Erewash Community Safety Partnership identified the most vulnerable and at-risk young people for the programme.

The charity worked in partnership with Erewash Borough Council, Parkside High Youth Project, Derby County Community Trust and Derbyshire County Council’s Early Help Team.

Live life better

Exercise by Referral is a free 12 week exercise programme supported by qualified exercise referral staff at Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston and Long Eaton’s West Park Leisure Centre.

The programme aims to increase the activity levels of people who want to improve their health and wellbeing.

Activities include bookable swimming, aqua aerobics, supervised gym sessions and group exercise classes.

To be eligible for the programme you must meet certain health criteria and be referred by your GP or other healthcare professional to the Live Life Better Derbyshire Admin team.

Once you have been referred to the appropriate leisure centre you will be contacted by a qualified instructor to arrange a one-to-one consultation.

They delivered a one-to-one sports mentoring programme to young people over 12 sessions.

Fancy walking this way?

The free outings vary from week to week and are a great way to meet new people, enjoy the outdoors and increase health and wellbeing, providing low intensity exercise for people of all abilities.

Walk Derbyshire has weekly volunteer-led walks leaving from Long Eaton Town Hall, Ilkeston’s Victoria Park Leisure Centre, Stanley Post Office and Sandiacre Library.

Organised by Erewash Borough Council’s Sport and Health Development service, there are opportunities to become a walk leader by taking part in the team’s free training day which will equip you with everything you need to set up walks, and become part of the Walk Derbyshire Scheme.

Family trails are also held and plans for an Erewash Easter Walking Week between 11-17 April are currently being finalised.

Civic Office A new portfolio holder has been appointed to lead Erewash Borough Council’s continued drive to boost town centres and work with local businesses on breathing new life into the borough’s High Streets.
