Inside EBC Looking forward As we look forward to a new year, the rollout of the government’s vaccination programme gives us all hope for a brighter future and a way out of the pandemic.

The council continues to work hard to help our residents, particularly those that are vulnerable, as well as providing much needed financial support for local community organisations and businesses thanks go to our frontline staff who continue to deliver key services throughout the pandemic.

Since the start of the pandemic last year over £27m of grant support has been paid out to small businesses in Erewash. Our business community has been faced with unprecedented challenges over the last year and hopefully this financial support will help them move forward.

A number of residents have benefited from council tax support through flexible payment plans and over 5,500 people have registered for the council tax support scheme helping those in need at such a difficult time.

At the time of going to print the Long Eaton bid for £25m investment has been submitted to the government for a once in a lifetime opportunity to rejuvenate the town. The council has also started the refurbishment of the well-known Toll Bar House and is looking at ways of funding other regeneration projects in Ilkeston.

I am particularly pleased that the council, together with housing association and construction partners, has completed a total of 56 affordable new homes in Ilkeston despite the many challenges over the last 12 months - an incredible achievement!

Carol Hart, Leader of the Council There is no doubt that the great outdoors has helped to keep many folks going throughout the pandemic by enjoying the council’s parks, nature reserves and many country walks in the borough whilst reconnecting with the local environment - the early signs of spring like a snowdrop, a violet, the first daffodils all represent the hope that we can come out of this crisis much better.

I would like to personally thank all our residents that have followed the lockdown restrictions and guidance to help keep our community safe and healthy. I know that there will be many challenges ahead but we will move forward with optimism and beat this virus together.

Stanton breakthrough

want to transform it into a modern and environmentally sustainable site, bringing back rail connectivity, employment and opportunity to local people.

A 70-hectare site at Stanton that has been derelict for years has been sold with plans to transform the land and create local jobs for local people.

Erewash Borough Council welcomed the news that land owner SaintGobain PAM UK Ltd agreed the sale with Verdant Ltd – a joint venture and private endeavour between local businesses Ward Recycling and Trust Utilities.

The sale of the land at the northern side of Low’s Lane is seen as a major breakthrough for the Stanton Regeneration Site, which has long been identified by the council as one of the biggest redevelopment opportunities in the borough.

Councillor Michael Powell, Lead Member for Regeneration and Planning says: “We are not talking about the whole of the Stanton site and there will be planning processes to go through - but this is a large-scale area and its development would help meet our ambitions for job creation. I am absolutely delighted that we have some positive news.”

Ward Recycling and Trust Utilities, who have existing facilities alongside, say: “As local businesses with a strong heritage in the area, we see this as a real chance to create a new legacy for Ilkeston. It will unlock potential for long term business opportunities and future jobs for Derbyshire and the wider region.”

The Census is coming The official census day is Sunday 21 March and by taking part you help to inform decisions on services that shape your community, such as healthcare, education and transport.

The 2021 census is just days away - the once-in-a-decade survey that gives the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales.

This year’s census will be the first run predominantly online and households will now be receiving their questionnaires with full instructions on how to respond and details of all the support on offer from census staff. You can fill your census questionnaire in online as soon as you get yours.

Council Tax 2021/22 A recommendation that Erewash Borough Council raises its share of council tax for 2021/22 by 2.61% - £5 per annum for a Band D property was expected to be discussed at the council’s budget setting meeting on 4 March.

The proposed £5 increase would mean that the council’s charge for a Band D property would increase from £191.59 to £196.59 per annum. If agreed, that will mean an increase of 10p per week on the council’s charge for a Band D property.

The council has worked hard to keep the proposed increase in its share of the Council Tax bill to a minimum despite the financial challenges and the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report that was expected to go to full council on 4 March said that up to £1m of further savings may need to be found in 2022/23 to achieve a balanced budget - but that the council’s record over the last decade suggests it is an achievable task.

We strive to find the best ways of meeting the continuing financial pressures and we know there are very tough challenges still ahead - but Erewash remains strong.”

Only 11% of the total council tax bill that residents pay goes to the Borough Council. The rest is for services provided by Derbyshire County Council, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and Parish Councils – Erewash has no control over the charges set by these organisations.

Building works

Work is well underway to transform Ilkeston’s iconic 1930s crescent-shaped Toll Bar building into new opportunities for small businesses.

Toll Bar House was originally built for Nottingham Electric Power Company and sits alongside Ilkeston’s White Lion Square roundabout at the gateway to the town centre.

Erewash Borough Council is now working to upgrade, redevelop and revitalise the landmark building as part of a £850,000 project to transform it into an energy and water efficient building to help combat climate change.

The refurbishment of the art deco landmark will make accommodation suitable for small and growing companies where office space is constrained in Ilkeston.

The project will include creating 22 offices with shared meeting rooms and kitchen and bathroom facilities, the flexibility to combine spaces to create larger letting units and the development of old garages to form workshop space.

D2N2 - the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire - has allocated £425,000 from its Local Growth Fund allocation towards the refurbishment.

Covid support continues More than £5m of grant payments have now been rolled out over the last three months to small and micro businesses across Erewash.

The government-funded grants have been approved by Erewash Borough Council and issued to the hundreds of eligible businesses affected by the COVID-19 tier and lockdown restrictions, as well as the Christmas Support Payments.

On-line Bloom

The annual gardening competition Erewash in Bloom will take on a new format and go online this year due to the fallout from coronavirus.

Unlike previous years where judges visited the gardens of finalists, this time entrants will be asked to submit five photographs per category through an online entry form. The competition will be launched on Tuesday 27 April and entries will close on Friday 2nd July.

The ever-popular competition will remain your chance to show off your gardening skills and help make Erewash bloomin’ marvellous this summer.

There will be 11 categories for residents, community groups, businesses and schools and finals judging by a virtual panel will be in August.

Moving the competition online is a temporary measure until we get through the pandemic and we thank everyone for their understanding. erewash.gov.uk/erewashinbloom from 27 April for entry forms and details.

Bidding for the best The ambitious Long Eaton Town Investment Plan has been submitted to the government for the once-in-ageneration opportunity to win £25m of funding.

• Redevelop the former Galaxy cinema into a four storey residential building for young professionals.

• Transform the Grade II* listed Stable Block behind Long Eaton Town Hall into small business units.

Put together by the multi-agency Long Eaton Town Deal Board, the Plan is seen as one of the most important visionary documents in the town’s history to help transform it into a vibrant and go-to town over the next 10 years. A decision on the bid is due at the end of March.

• Upgrading of the cycle and walking network, including a new canal bridge at Britannia Road.

• Creation of a ‘West Park Waterfront’ alongside the canal and improving the facilities at West Park for high quality events.

The projects outlined in the town’s bid - which with match funding amount to some £30m - have been developed through consultation with local residents and businesses:

Erewash Museum has sent out a thank you to all those who took part in last month’s online consultation to give their views on how to build on the success of its award winning ways over the next few years.

As part of the survey, the museum was keen to know what visitors would like to see once its doors reopen again following the difficult last year due to the pandemic.

The museum welcomes visitors of all ages and usually runs events such as the Beach during the summer, themed activity weeks during the school holidays, plus a variety of exhibitions showcasing local talent and historical times.

Landmark tree

Green Homes

A scheme that helps towards the cost of making homes energy efficient has been extended for a year.

Homeowners now have until the end of March 2022 to have upgrades to their homes completed through the Green Homes initiative.

One of Erewash Borough Council’s dedicated volunteer Tree Wardens, Pat Ancliff, secured an elm tree to plant in the borough as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the National Tree Warden Scheme.

The Tree Council donated 30 elms as part of the scheme’s commemorations and Pat, who has been a Tree Warden in Erewash for 12 years, was one of the first 30 in the UK to make an online application – choosing to plant the tree in the grounds of Treetops Hospice Care at Risley.

The disease-resistant Ulmus ‘New Horizon’ will grow 12 metres high after 25 years and will support other plants and animals, including rare butterflies and birds.

The national scheme offers vouchers towards energy efficiency measures covering up to two thirds of the cost to a maximum of £5,000 per household.

People on a low income and in receipt of eligible benefits may obtain vouchers for the full cost, up to a maximum of £10,000.

Switched on

Landlords are now legally required to have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested at least every five years.

A copy of the electrical safety report will then have to be provided by landlords to their tenants and the council if requested.

The regulations, which came into force in June last year, applied to new tenancies from 1 July 2020 and will apply to existing tenancies from 1 April this year.

These regulations mean that all landlords will have to follow the example set by good landlords who will have already made sure the electrical installations in their rental properties are safe.

Fresh air - walk your dog, take a stroll or cycle in our lovely borough.

Love life, stay healthy In these challenging times it is more important than ever that we take care of ourselves. Improving our physical and mental wellbeing is vital. Here are a few suggestions on how this can be achieved.

Many home workouts are available online, the NHS offers sessions that can be completed at home with no specialist equipment. Aerobic exercises, pilates and yoga, and strength and resistance workouts can be found at nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-fitness-studio/ and are suitable for people of all abilities.

Sessions vary from 10 to 45 minutes so choose a workout that suits your lifestyle. Exercise at your own pace, do not over exert yourself and keep hydrated. Going for a walk, jog or run or going for a bike ride along a canal path or around one of Erewash’s many parks is another way to practice good health.

For those who find it hard to leave the house or who are working from home, make time each day to clear your mind.

Enjoy family time out at Straw’s Bridge, West Hallam.

Get up off the sofa or move away from your desk into another room. Activities such as yoga and meditation are good for creating a free thinking space but other simple things work wonders, such as reading, baking, dancing to your favourite music, completing a jigsaw, drawing or colouring.

Mental health support

The newly-named Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline and Support Service is offering 24/7 help with increased support from partner organisations.

The helpline is still run by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust but has expanded to offer broader support and advice thanks to link-ups with third sector organisations and the emergency services.

West Park in Long Eaton (photo 4) offers formal gardens, a bandstand, a skatepark, two children’s play areas, walking, cycle paths and Parkruns on Saturdays.

Some unauthorised waste carriers use social media to offer ‘tip runs’. Whilst the service they offer appears cheap, these individuals are sometimes operating illegally and your waste will be dumped in the local area.

Recycling matters Plastics: Black plastics, including bin liners, cannot be recycled due to the low quality. This includes black plastic coat hangers.

The council’s Erewash Recycles campaign is encouraging everyone to continue the drive to boost the borough’s recycling rate ... and reduce the amount of waste we’re sending to landfill.

Here are just a few hints and tips on how to recycle right, while an A to Z of recycling can be found on our website erewash.gov.uk/atoz Face Coverings: Single use face masks must be disposed of in your black bin. Used face coverings or PPE, such as gloves, must not be put in the recycling bin or dropped as litter.

Food containers: Most food trays and containers can be recycled, but make sure they are empty and clean.

Pizza boxes can be recycled as long as there is no grease in the box.

Dirty food containers are classed as contaminated waste.

Clothes: Clothes and textiles cannot be put in with your kerbside recycling collections. They can either be donated to charity or taken to one of the charity clothes bins in the borough including at West Park, Long Eaton or Stanton Road car park, Ilkeston. If the clothes are not in a condition to be donated they can be taken to Ilkeston Household Recycling Centre.

Nappies: Just one nappy found in recycling can contaminate the whole load. Nappies should be placed in black waste bins. Derbyshire County Council operates Time for a Change, a campaign which offers £25

Outdoor learning Ilkeston is home to a new forest school offering nature-based activities, crafts and outdoor cooking sessions.

The former Abbotsford Community Centre in Shipley View has been transformed into The Pod, thanks to students from the Prince’s Trust, and also features natural habitats for wildlife and a special ‘fairy area’ for visitors to enjoy.

Prince’s Trust students carried out preparation work including clearing self-set trees and shrubs, securing a perimeter fence and digging a fire pit.

They also raised £300 to help buy materials for craft classes, while other donations to the project were

cashback if you spend £50 or more on real nappies. More information at derbyshire.gov.uk Paper: Do the crinkle test to see if it can be recycled. Scrunch it up in your hand and if it springs back it cannot be recycled.

Food: Go to lovefoodhatewaste.com for recipes and tips to help reduce the amount of food you waste. The average family of four can save just over £60 a month by reducing food waste.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment, says: “We all have to make the effort when it comes to our household waste, ensuring we recycle everything possible.

It just takes a few minutes to think about which bin our waste goes into but it will make a big difference.”

Sarah Briggs, who will be managing the new forest school learning area, said: “Thanks to the Prince’s Trust team we now have an outstanding Forest School learning area for local children to visit and enjoy.”

Erewash Borough Council leased the site, which will be used by organisations supporting young people including social enterprise Parkside High, youth project Streetside and Derby County in the Community.

Erewash Museum has supported mental health in the borough by providing free activity fun bags for families via local food bank projects.

The museum team is working with local community groups and other food banks in Erewash to further distribute the ‘arts and crafts to go’ packs as a way of encouraging local children and adults to stay creative.

Rough sleeping down Derbyshire and Staffordshire Moorlands and there has also been a significant reduction in the number of people rough sleeping across the partnership area.

Erewash has seen a reduction in the number of homeless people on its streets.

The annual rough sleeping estimate, carried out by local authorities each autumn, showed six people rough sleeping on the night of 19 November 2020, a reduction of five from the previous year.

The reduction is partly due to the increased support the council and its partners have given homeless residents throughout the pandemic to find accommodation and to help them keep it.

The council is urging residents to help reduce rough sleeping even further by contacting the council-funded Derbyshire Outreach Team, run by the charity P3, if they see anyone sleeping rough in Erewash.

This can be done by visiting p3charity.org/DOT or by free phone 0808 196 8199. The outreach team will then locate the person and find them somewhere to stay.

Elections Elections for Derbyshire County Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire take place on Thursday 6 May. The easiest and safest way to cast your vote is to have a postal vote, with new applications needing to be made by the deadline of 5pm on Tuesday 20 April – your vote matters so apply now!

The council recently sent letters to all households to confirm that the information we have on the Register of Electors is correct. The letter also contained a postal vote application form.

Taking the helm

Erewash Partnership has elected university academic Bev Crighton as it’s new chair, the first woman to head the organisation in its 26-year history.

Bev is a senior lecturer in business management at the University of Derby and has served on the Partnership’s board of directors since 2015.

The enterprise agency has its HQ in Long Eaton and helps people to start and grow businesses.

It has managed work spaces in the town and in Ilkeston.

The new vice-chair of the Partnership is Richard Ledger, managing director of Draycott-based Millitec, and also chair of Long Eaton Town Board.

An unprecedented year…

Remembrance Day Services still went ahead last November and for the first time were live streamed on the council’s social media pages and viewed by many people from the safety of their own homes.

Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Sue Beardsley said: The Mayor alongside the Erewash Canal completing her fundraising 1.2 million steps in 120 days.

The last year has seen many changes and for the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Sue Beardsley, this has been a particularly unusual time with no events to open or visits being allowed. The introduction of ‘virtual’ visits have been a great success especially with local schools.

“It really has been a year like no other, and I was very proud to act as Mayor of Erewash for a second consecutive year which has never happened before. I am very grateful to have had the chance to serve the people of this wonderful borough through the pandemic.

Spirit of Erewash

Erewash Museum’s planned Remembrance Art exhibition, depicting the Spirit of Erewash during the covid lockdown last year, has been recreated into a new multi-media exhibition. A unique short film by artist in residence Graham Elstone features beautiful artwork created by Dallimore Primary School pupils via Zoom-led sessions plus a variety of work by local residents.

The film hopes to bring together memories of how local residents spent their time during lockdown and will serve as a historic reminder of how creative Erewash became during such an unprecented time in our lives. For latest updates visit facebook/erewashmuseum.

The ‘Knit a Nipper’ project raised £4,000 for the Mayor’s chosen charities for 2019/20, Action for Children and Rainbows Hospice.

The Mayor successfully completed a separate campaign for the Stroke Association, Stride for Stroke, and walked 1.2 million steps in 102 days (10,000 steps a day) and raised an impressive £1,055.

Money was raised for Treetops by means of an ‘alternative’ Christmas card donated by staff and councillors at Erewash Borough Council and also from donations in lieu of gifts for the Mayor’s birthday with £330 being raised.

Sword secrets

A rare Anglo Saxon metal sword, dating back to between 800-1000 AD, has been unearthed from a grave in All Saints Church, Kirk Hallam.

The sword was taken to London for verification. It was brought back to the borough thanks to the hard work of local historian Esther Collington and the All Saints Church Parochial Church Council with National Lottery Heritage Funding. It is currently in safekeeping at Erewash Museum.

The borough’s community radio station Erewash Sound has sent out a thank you to the council after it received a £2,000 boost to help it stay on air.

The radio team, based in Cotmanhay, will use the funding to update their servers to use a more modern operating system. It will also help the bespoke Erewash Sound Training Academy.

Also celebrating are four other voluntary groups in Erewash who have received funding in the council’s latest round of Community Grants:
