You can't have privacy without security At EREN’s conference held in Bordeaux in autumn, we had the privilege to have as our Key-Note Speaker the CEO and co-founder of S2Group, the Cybersecurity Company whose clients are some of the most important European Companies including National Security Agencies and NATO. Mr. Miguel Ángel Juan shared with us some of the threads we face in today's business and private environments. But in his presentation he also relieved the audience by informing them of the resources available and the anticipatory measures they take to prevent all of us, including EREN’s environment, from cyber-attacks.

José Ribes Bas

EREN Director

Former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, James Comey, recently commented that "the diverse threads we face are increasingly cyber-based. […] most sensitive data is stored on computers. We are losing data, money, and ideas through cyber intrusions. This threatens innovation and, as citizens, we are also increasingly vulnerable to losing our personal information." Additionaly, Google co-founder, Mr. Larry Page stated: "For me, privacy and security are really important. We think about it in terms of both: You can't have privacy without security". Without trying to find second lectures by entering into -unnecessary for this article- further analyses, we all are aware of the threads we are exposed to. As we said in the previous edition of Villae International Magazine "a financial misdemeanour may not have as many consequences as the theft of sensitive or confidential information, company secrets, patents or client data" […] "We are living in a period of great change, unlike any before. All of us, including our youngest children, benefit from access to fast and supposedly free information. Never before in history have we witnessed and played such a key role in technological changes that have such a great effect on our lives”. European Real Estate Network takes the data and privacy of their clients really seriously and in order to protect them it has hired the Cyber-security Company S2Group who hosts all our proprietary codes, our data bases and is constantly monitoring our computers with absolute confidentially and privacy. Although we can never be 100% safe, - “There are only two types of companies: Those that have been hacked and those that will be hacked.” Robert S. Mueller, III, Director FBIand even though we take all measures, the weakest link is in the human behaviour. Education is the strongest precautionary measure we have and it is up to each one of to start learning and leading the way for others around us. We at EREN have assumed the responsibility of preserving the integrity and confidentiality of our client’s data. This requires our organisation to keep alert and innovative. So we are not only efficient professionals in marketing and in selling your properties, but we also take the necessary measures to have maximum security around our systems to prevent unsolicited access to sensitive information about our clients. We hope you will enjoy reading this edition of the magazine. You will find articles about the future of Smart Cities, a review of the most iconic Universities and Colleges, a flight through luxury air-travel, a brilliant article about Gold, a vision of entrepreneur Elon Musk, and beautiful photos of elegant bars around the world, amongst others. In the last pages, as always, you’ll discover the spring’s magic collection of the most exclusive properties in Europe.

In 2017, EREN, the European Real Estate Network, held member meetings in Kitzbühel, Austria and in Bordeaux, France.

Work & Fun

IN

Kitzbühel, members enjoyed stunning accommodations at the Kitzbühel Country Club with an evening embodying truly iconic Tyrolian cuisine and culture with views over the world-famous ski run “The Streif” on the majestic Hahnenkamm. In Bordeaux, EREN member Maxwell-Baynes hosted an informative meeting at the 18th-century Palais de la Bourse located in the center of Bordeaux across from the Garonne River. This central Bordeaux location allowed members to fully immerse themselves in the culture of the Bordeaux region. Additionally, members enjoyed a day-long cultural immersion tour of SaintÉmilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and center of some of the nest wine-making in the world.

Business collaboration In addition to exploring and understanding the unique culture and historical significance of each meeting locale, EREN meetings principally focus on business issues that have an impact on global luxury real estate practices. Of course, digital and mobile acuity is an important issue in this regard. It is axiomatic nowadays that modern consumers expect such from any brand. These “on demand” and “always on” consumers have looked to technology to create seamless and frictionless efficiencies in their lives. These efficiencies focus on alleviating modern consumers from the burden of managing mundane tasks so they can focus on enriching their lives with experiences and adventures, allowing them to define and live-out their unique life philosophies.

“CRM technology is designed to aid our members to more effectively anticipate and respond to the needs of their clients.”

Anticipate and respond Importantly, the members of EREN seek to help their clients live-out these philosophies by finding the most appropriate properties for them. Embracing the art of representing clients is as important as fulfilling the technical needs. Nevertheless, EREN has created easy-to-use and navigate web property search portals across five languages. And EREN has created a unique client relationship management system called RENEW that embodies the best in CRM technology buttressed with machine learning and business intelligence functionality. This “sentient” CRM technology is designed to aid our members and their broker-associates to more effectively anticipate and respond to the needs of their clients. In this regard, RENEW helps EREN members in the art of client relations.

VILLÆ 7

EREN M EET ING S 2 0 17

Security around data Another significant aspect of the RENEW system is how highly securitized the system has been designed and implemented. From requiring two-factor authentication to receiving quarterly security audits from S2Group, one of the top security consulting firms in Europe, security of data and information is a top priority for EREN. In fact, security was a primary topic of discussion in Bordeaux. Specifically, members discussed how modern clients are more and more requesting proof of security around their data and information. This aligns with broad trends facing luxury products and services across the globe, specifically with Chinese, European, and North American high net worth individuals.

“...clients are more and more requesting proof of security around their data and information.”

Wineries and vineyards Additionally, in Bordeaux the co-founder of MaxwellBaynes and EREN member Michael Baynes discussed the nuanced issues related to representing and selling Bordeaux vineyards, specifically focusing on how Chinese buyers affect the Bordeaux market. Generally, the Chinese are fascinated with European wines and are actively purchasing vineyards as production assets to supply the Chinese markets with wines coming from Bordeaux, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Tuscany and other famous wine regions in Europe. This has caused interesting economic and cultural shifts, as long-established wine-producing families attempt to accommodate this influx of international buyers. The sale of wineries and vineyards is another robust activity delivered by some EREN members servicing their international clients.

“The sale of wineries and vineyards is another robust activity delivered by some EREN members.”

A well deserved toast Finally, the Bordeaux meeting ended with a private wine tasting by renowned vintner, Stéphane Apelbaum, Founder of Optimum Vineyard Management & Consulting, who discussed the unique attributes and characteristics of Bordeaux wines and vineyards, specifically focusing on the Saint-Émilion region while leading members through an outstanding and educational wine tasting experience.

BEAUTIFUL BARS A far cry from a rowdy pub, the finest bars are places of elegance and sheer sophistication where everything, from the cocktails to the dĂŠcor, adds to a sense of refined privilege.

BEAUTIFUL BARS

Four Seasons Roof Bar Mumbai Following the Asian trend for luxurious roof bars, as seen in places such as Bangkok and Singapore, the Four Seasons Roof Bar offers a very different 21st century perspective on Mumbai. It especially comes alive in the evening, when the city’s lights glitter all around the bar in the sky. The latter is sleek, svelte and modern, with panoramic booths and dining tables surrounding the LED-lit central bar. The ambience is one of modern privilege and luxury with the added twist of feeling like you’re on the deck of a ship – an airship.

BEAUTIFUL BARS

Baiser Bar Xanthi One may not expect to find a Greek bar on a list like this, much less one from the northern provincial town of Xanthi, but this exclusive venue shows just how international creativity and good taste are – and that establishments of this kind are not restricted to capital cities. Baiser Bar has become such a reference for style and sophistication because it offers a contemporary ambience with touches of modern Art Deco inspiration. Colourful classical elements and a mix of chic and trendy, gives it a distinctively eclectic atmosphere as well suited to international businesspeople as it is to local high society.

Atlas Bar Singapore Singapore is famous for the Raffles Hotel and it is also famous for its bar, but in terms of sheer magnificence you would be hard-put to surpass the Atlas lobby and bar at the exclusive Parkview Square – whether in Singapore or elsewhere in the world. Inspired by the glamorous Art Deco styles of 1920s New York, this grand lobby and bar is the kind of venue that first takes your breath away, then makes you feel sumptuously at home. Like a gentleman’s club designed to perfection, it offers classical refinement on a big scale, combining fine dining with the most elegant drinking and meeting establishment this side of perfection.

BEAUTIFUL BARS

Plaza Athénée Bar Paris Ranked one of the finest bars in the world, in what is one of the most prestigious hotels in Paris, the Plaza Athénée Bar is an ode to elegance and style in which modern and classic elements are merged to great effect. Known here as ‘Le Bar du Plaza’, it is quite the place to be seen in Paris, attracting not only the hotel’s well-heeled guests but also socialites both local and international. Not surprisingly, the service, beverages and snacks are all of superlative quality, as this is a hotel known for its Michelin star cuisine and prized pastries, stocking of course the very finest wines, cognacs and other spirits known to man. In blending past and present traditions with aplomb, it underlines the new trend for upscale bar venues that can only be described as ‘beautiful’.

Scarfes Bar London There are many imposing, elegant and also avant-garde bars in places such as London, Paris and New York, but if you’re looking for exclusivity with a unique character Scarfes Bar is the place. It juxtaposes classical décor with a touch of humour injected by cartoon depictions of royals and other famous Britons. What’s more, it does it in a classic style, making this exquisitely comfy and intimate bar feel rather like the private parlour of the creators of Punch. Indeed, the bar calls itself the place ‘where paintings and potions meet’ – a description that in itself commends this fine establishment. One suspects it is also just the right spot for good oldfashioned conversation against a background of cocktails and first class pub grub. Hey-ho, keep the spirit alive!

ELON MUSK Visionary of the Future In an age when we desperately need visionaries to lead the way, Elon Musk is a multidisciplinary engineer, inventor, entrepreneur and futurist with the drive to do what today’s politicians can’t – change the world for the better.

T

here have always been visionaries and inventors, from Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo to Jules Verne, but more than anyone else today South African-born Elon Musk is the renaissance man of the hour. This is an era where we look in vain to our leaders for answers to the pressing environmental, social and economic issues that beset humanity. Decade upon decade, there is no change, no action and no transparency. We seem to be locked in an everincreasing spiral of uncontrolled technology development that has the potential to disrupt our economic system and the fabric of society. Global warming, population growth, pollution, growing disparity in wealth and the rise of artifiial intelligence are the spectres that stare us in the face, yet they are barely addressed by those in power. VILLÆ 23

ELON MUSK. Visionary of the Future

“A breaktrough here would represent a vital step in our relationship with the planet, and it would also greatly affect transport...”

A global vision What has all of this got to do with a technological entrepreneur such as Elon Musk, you might wonder. Indeed, but for one thing this North American magnate born in Afrikaans-speaking Pretoria could just be another tech tycoon like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates, a ‘geek in a suit’ growing incredibly rich on new innovations in digital engineering. But Elon Musk is different. Yes, he is a technology freak and yes, he has the ambition to make his commercial enterprises multibillion dollar success stories, but with Musk you sense that these objectives are not the goals themselves, but tools that will help him achieve his real ambitions. You see, Elon Musk is also a passionate man with a vision for the world. As much as we need visionaries, history teaches us that many of the most dangerous people in the past have been driven by ‘visions’. One person’s utopia is another’s nightmare, but what sets Elon Musk apart is that, for once, he is not seeking to create a better world by furthering an ideological agenda, but plans to use science and technology to solve many of our problems. By veering away from politics and ideology he consciously – and intelligently – steps away from that which divides us and instead applies the secular

VILLÆ 24

rational integrity of science. The latter is increasingly apropriated by corporations and (ab)used for commercial means, but this technology magnate seems to follow a humanistic approach that places advancement back in the popular good. A man of many talents and doubtless energy, his prime focus is on those factors relating to transport. At the heart of it is a desire to greatly advance the development of renewable energy sources that would create a sustainable cycle between demand and output capacity. A breaktrough here would represent a vital step in our relationship with the planet, and it would also greatly affect transport, which is at the very axis of human mobility and economic activity. It is in this field that Elon Musk displays the big thinking and macro view typical of the visionary, having already established ground-breaking companies in electric car and battery manufacture, transport infrastructure, solar energy, aviation and space travel. Though not all are expected to be equally successful, all are developed from an ambitious premise of wanting not just to lead and innovate industries and develop new technologies, but to actually change things for the better.

From small beginnings…

SpaceX

A graduate in physics and economics, the academically gifted Musk subsequently abandoned plans to pursue a PhD at Stanford in favour of founding the first of many business enterprises. From a bullied teenager who taught himself how to programme computers he has gone on to found a technology-based business empire. It all started with Zip2, a pioneering online city guide that he co-founded with his brother Kimbal in 1995 and sold four years later, netting $22 million with which to launch his next venture, X.com. The latter would lead to PayPal, the secure online payment system that has taken over the world. The company was sold after three years and Elon Musk’s share amounted to $165 million. It was at this point that he differentiated himself from the typical tech magnate and founded a series of visionary companies conceived not just to earn money but to make a contribution to the world as well.

Born out of the desire to reboot space travel and partly founded with $100 million of his own money, SpaceX is a developer of launch rockets that are not only cheaper but also highly innovative. It is the first commercial company to have launched a satellite into space, and its Dragon was the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station in 2012. Though so much has been achieved in a short period of time, Musk believes this is just the beginning of a new golden era of space exploration.

Tesla The best-known of all his endeavours, Tesla has done more to promote electric cars and rejuvenate the automobile industry than anyone else. What’s more, in less than 15 years it has caught the German carmakers napping and placed the hitherto floundering US car industry back at the forefront of innovation. The sleek, modern Roadster, Model S and Model X have become the darlings of Hollywood celebrities and are gaining broad popular recognition, but Tesla is also a leading supplier of electric powertrains and batteries, most notably to Mercedes. As the chief designer and CEO of the company, Musk is lauded for his open attitude in wanting to share the technology with other carmarkers in a drive to promote electrically powered cars.

“Hyperloop could see it economically and technically viable within less than a decade.”

Others

Hyperloop

More recent initiatives include OpenAI, Neuralink and The Boring Company, all of which reveal the same humanistic foundations that are far removed from most corporations, no matter how convincing their Social Responsibility communiques. Neuralink is a neurotechnology firm looking to develop artifical intelligence that could remedy or enhance our human capabilities, while OPenAI is a non-profit organisation that studies ways of creating artificial intelligence applications that are safe and of benefit to society. Musk is one of several leading thinkers, including Stephen Hawkins and Bill Gates, who have been voicing concerns about the potentially disastrous impact of AI on employment and our social and economic systems. The Boring Company, meanwhile, is looking at developing a tunelling infrastructure that could provide a car-based traffic solution for large urban areas the way undeground metros have done for trains.

This revolutionary high-speed transportation system is not new in concept, but it was Elon Musk who created design teams tasked with producing a workable, practical foundation for what are effectively pods channeled through long-distance tubes. Though still at the prototype stage, the rapid development of this technology initiated by Hyperloop could see it economically and technically viable within less than a decade.

Apart from philanthropic efforts and plans to design an electric jet aircraft, Elon Musk also manages to raise emotions across the planet, and while not everyone may share his vision it is clear that, having achieved so much by the age of 46, we can look forward to a lot more innovation from one of the most far-sighted people of our time.

Solar City Just as Tesla serves as a vehicle to transform the way we drive, so SolarCity was founded to speed up the development of solar energy and the movement away from fossil fuels. In fact, the two ‘sister’ companies are working together to help achieve this.

F

abrics are the ultimate form of home decoration, the finishing touch that balances an interior and makes a house a home. Naturally they vary greatly, from stark and style-driven to colourful and cosseting, but wherever your preferences take you the soft furnishings of your home are among the most important elements of your property’s décor, so choose them carefully and make sure they are as comfortable as they look good. A few years ago the trend was all about cold, white minimalism, an era during which the classic fabric took a backseat to harder, more masculine surfaces such as marble, stone, wood and steel. We’re glad to report that both colour and soft furnishings are back in, not just because they make a home more comfortable and liveable, but also because they make it more fun – more yours.

A return to colour The latest trends blend 21st century modern styles with retro inspiration, producing a return to floral detail, brilliant colours and a desire to negate uniformity in favour of creating your very own, unique living space. Indeed, fabrics offer a great way to put your stamp on a home, even when you haven’t had it designed, built and laid out to your own specifications. Cosseting, fun and personal are words that come to mind when you see the latest creations by top brands such as GP & J Baker, Andrew Martin, Nobilis Paris, Designers Guild, Ralph Lauren, Zoffany and Les Créations de la Maison. Opulence is another – just look at the exquisite tones and textures offered by Romo, Larsen, Misia, Gastón y Daniela Clarke & Clarke and Jab Anstoetz. The refined glamour simply oozes off the beautifully crafted fabric. Really, we are enjoying a renaissance of visual delights, for when you survey the collection of brands like Casamance, Jim Thompson, the term that forms in your mind’s eye is vibrant. If well-chosen and combined, lovely shades and patterns will add to the sophistication of your property and soften the austerity of some of the more modern and industrial architecture. It will give you a place to snuggle up and feel at home just as it provides the eye with an aesthetically pleasing focal point. These are fabrics so beautifully crafted and velvety soft that you just want to touch them. And why not? Fabrics are tactile as well as a visual delight.

For the bolder, more confident homeowner the latest collections by brands like Jane Churchill, Colefax and Fowler, Manuel Canovas Paris, Mulberry and Malabar offer the opportunity to be a little eccentric and surround yourself with some decorative indulgence. Evocative foliage, patterned animals, ethnic prints and teapots make interior design more playful than it has been for years, allowing a little lightness to enter your home as well as being stylish, elegant and sophisticated.

LUXURY AIR TRAVEL There was a time when simply travelling by air was an exclusive experience, but with commercial airlines converted into glorified bus shuttles in the air, those with the means and the need to travel swiftly, efficiently and in comfort are looking to other options.

In the early days flying was a privilege few could afford, and therefore a world of glamour accompanied by good service and even sleeper flights complete with comfy fold-up berths as found on trains of the era. The jet era, however, also brought larger aeroplanes, and as cheaper seats in ‘economy class’ became the norm, the erstwhile gentleman experience was now restricted to ‘first class’. Business class was later introduced for the convenience of executive commuters, but now it is the very concept of first class on commercial airlines that is under threat. ©airjet-designs.com

Indeed, for this segment of the market these are ‘do or die’ times. Having ceded the initiative in the mass market to specialist cheap airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair, national carriers such as British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France need the business and luxury clientele to prosper. However, Emirates and Qatar Airways seem to have the edge when it comes to offering in-flight and in-transit opulence, luxury and service. Perhaps an even bigger threat to the major airlines’ desire to develop this market further is the fact that more and more luxury air travel is moving towards private jets.

Airborne opulence What’s more, with flexible private charters and even regular routes becoming increasingly common, private jet flight is now more accessible and really taking off. Apart from the obvious convenience, luxury and service involved, there is the networking and status appeal to travelling in this way. And while well-heeled business and private flyers are beginning to get in on the act the super-wealthy have been enjoying this form of super-deluxe transport for some time now. Even they, however, are taking in-flight luxury to a new level, effectively converting the erstwhile private jet into flying palaces. The latest trends include not just luxurious lounges similar to the home cinemas found in grand villas, but also exquisite vodka bars, opulent private bedrooms complete with large step-in showers or baths and sophisticated mile-high offices with all the latest gadgetry. While these luxuries are certainly practical too, features such as Jacuzzis, on-board casinos, heated bathroom floors, banqueting kitchens, discos, chill-out zones and extravagant dining rooms are 21st century follies. Naturally, the range of options increases with space, so a small

Learjet is more limited in terms of features, if not necessarily the opulence of its design, than a large airliner originally designed for 300 or more passengers. Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich, has a Boeing 767 that is nothing short of an apartment in the air, complete with dining room, boardroom, bedroom suites with luxury bathrooms and a large lounge. The Boeing 757 of Donald Trump would set you back almost $100 million, but for that you would get space and features to rival that of Saudi princes and Russian tycoons. For this booming mode of bespoke transport, the sky certainly is the limit.

New gadgets In a world where technology is developing at an ever-increasing pace, the gadgets that once seemed like exotic science-fiction fantasies are slowly but surely becoming a reality.

Amazon Prime Air Within a relatively short period of time we have become familiar with drones – in reality self-flying gadgets now capable of a growing range of tasks, from military reconnaissance and aerial bombing missions to bird’s eye photography and filming. With its Prime Air delivery system, Amazon is taking the drone to the logistical revolution that it has built a commercial success upon. In a sign of many other things to come, these aerial robots will soon be bridging the gap between advanced stock order management systems and the manned delivery vehicles that up to now populated our roads. Not only does Prime Air take the human element out of the equation and lift delivery up to the skies, but it also does away with the need to collect a day’s deliveries in a van for distribution – having the capability to pick your personal order and deliver it to you within less than an hour! VILLÆ 40

Jetman Dubai From Icarus to the futuristic movies of the fifties and sixties, man has dreamed of flight. We eventually achieved it using the wings and propellers of jets of aircraft, but now the science fiction of the twentieth century is becoming a reality. In a scene reminiscent of a Bond movie or an episode of the Thunderbirds, man first achieved flight in 2004 when experienced Swiss pilot Yves Rossy successfully launched himself through the air with a prototype of the Jetwing. The latter is a jetpack that is strapped to the back of the pilot/

daredevil. It is not yet capable of taking off by itself, but once launched at altitude from an aeroplane it is capable of independent flight. The ‘Jetman’ has already crossed the English Channel and the Grand Canyon this way, and the images of him and teammates of Jetman Dubai, Vincent Reffet and Fred Fugen, flying in formation with an Emirates Airbus A380 or with the Patrouille de France, France’s aerobatic team, are quite astounding. We may all be strapping on jetpacks in the not so distant future.

Vue The world around us is getting ‘Smart’. We now have smartphones, smart TVs and with Vue, also smart glasses that are not gimmicky but intended to be slick, practical fashion pieces that will change the way we perceive spectacles to be. Besides being available in a wide range of designs, ranging from normal and prescription to sunglasses, they add a great many functions to the well-known optimal accessory that for many of us is part of our personal look. Your smart glasses will provide you with information on your daily calorie intake and exercise, allow you to listen to music or access GPS navigation without carrying any additional gadgets with you, as well as provide hands free phone linkage á la James Bond. Indeed, you might feel like a special agent at first but soon will wonder how you ever got by without it. VILLÆ 41

Hallowed halls Welcome to the most prestigious colleges and universities in the world.

Harvard VILLÆ 42

I

n a world where the competition for places at the foremost institutions of learning is greater than ever, the importance and status of the finest universities and colleges is at an all-time high. When it comes to education, reputation is almost as important as the academic results themselves. After all, being able to mention that you studied at Cambridge or Yale can easily overshadow the actual grade obtained or even the course followed – so much value is attached to the place of learning.

Oxford

On a parallel with the high standards of research and teaching achieved by such institutions over a very long period of time is the sense of exclusivity they offer. The aura of privilege surrounding a place at one of the most hallowed halls of learning has its roots in the times when the earliest universities, such as those of Bologna, Padua, Valladolid and Coimbra, were restricted to royalty, aristocracy and high-ranking clergymen. This situation remained in place from the middle ages up to relatively recent times, and even today a degree from one of the classic universities carries an aura of distinction.

Ranking versus Reputation We live in an age where there is even intense competition to get children into the ‘right’ pre-school, let alone schools, colleges and universities. In this environment graduating from prestigious names such as Oxford, Cambridge or one of the Ivy League colleges brings with it great advantages as you step into the professional world, but in our fast-moving technological era the most famous universities are not necessarily always the highest-ranking ones. Famous historic names such as the University of Heidelberg, the Sorbonne, Salamanca, Complutense, Salamanca and University College Dublin belong to the most revered international seats of learning but do not feature in the top-25 of the Anglo-Saxon dominated list of The World University Rankings of 2016. This might be partly because the ranking is biased towards the English language and Anglo-American educational systems, but even within countries such as France and Spain the most famous names are not the ones that top the lists for present-day excellence. The University of Salamanca, one of the earliest and most distinguished names in the academic world, now only makes 17th place in the Spanish lists, with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in third behind the University of Barcelona and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. In France, likewise, the Sorbonne is joint 14th, preceded by the École Normale Supérieure, the École Polytechnique and the Pierre and Marie Curie University.

Stanford

On a similar note, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and Dartmouth College in Hannover, New Hampshire, are two Ivy League universities absent from the top-25 in the world, where the non-Ivy League California Institute of Technology tops the list and the likes of MIT, the University of Chicago, UCLA and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, amongst others, also make the cut. In spite of their fame, Harvard and Yale are ‘only’ 6th and 12th respectively, where Oxford and Cambridge continue to shine in 2nd and 4th place. The fact that all but one of the top-10 universities on this global list are located in either the US or the UK points to an Anglo-Saxon bias, with the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich representing the rest of the world in 9th place. This trend extends all the way down the list, a fact that is all the more surprising when you consider that the highest-performing school leavers are not from the UK or US, but from countries such as Japan, South Korea and Singapore, while they and the likes of China and Germany are responsible for the research and technology that drives many of the world’s leading multinational firms and electronics giants. It is true that there is an intense competition among many of the finest and wealthiest students from across the globe to study at the best British and American universities, but in a fast-changing world where the balance of power is shifting towards Asia and other emerging regions, their current ranking will be hard to maintain. Perhaps in the future there will be a split between the more technologically focused universities that will no doubt represent the cutting edge in new advances and know-how, and the more classically minded icons of learning where students of the arts and humanities will be inspired to greatness within their fields. The concept of academia is evolving, and such a split would recognise its growing diversion into technological and more traditionally intellectual pursuits – both of which we need if we are to prosper in the future. Rankings are therefore a useful guide, but students should let themselves be driven by their vocation, not a ‘university brand’ when aspiring to become the very best in their chosen fields, enabling poets and historians to aspire to Dublin, Cambridge or Salamanca just as legal minds might prefer Yale or Oxford and the technical geniuses of the future opt for MIT, CIT and the Asian universities that are set to scale new heights.

SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE The cities of the future will be much more than a collection of buildings and transport routes. They will be a complex, interlinked manmade organism.

T

he world is becoming ‘smart’; we have smartphones, smart TVs, smart watches and even when we drive we’re connected to the net. It’s happened in a short period of time and is already a daily reality, but this is only the beginning – the near future will bring with it a smart revolution in which even entire cities become one big interconnected, multifunctional organism. This may seem somewhat exaggerated, frivolous or even frightening, but the new systems are also being designed to make cities less polluting, more energy-efficient and hopefully also human-friendly places to live and work. The aim of some of the most forward-thinking city planners is to make the urban centres of tomorrow entirely energy self-sufficient and carbon-free.

VILLÆ 49

SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE

MASDAR CITY, UAE With its investment resources, unhindered planning powers and space, the United Arab Emirates has an advantage when it comes to urban development, and they are making the most of it. Until now much of the focus has been on ambitious residential, office, retail and leisure projects, but Masdar City is an exciting example of how an energy-sustainable, environmentally friendly city can be created from scratch. Funded for the most part by the government of Abu Dhabi, the project is in the hands of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, itself a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, which is building a futuristic city to the designs of Norman Foster & Partners. The renowned architect and his team first began working on this gigantic urban plan in 2006. It incorporates housing, office space, retail, educational and medical facilities, leisure and all the other elements of a city,

VILLÆ 50

but one that relies only on solar and other sustainable energy sources, is carbon-zero and recycles to the point of creating a zero-waste environment. At least, this is the intention, and advanced urban transport and climate management systems will form a vital part of the 6km2, $22 billion city that is expected to be completed within a decade. A vital element of Masdar’s economy will be businesses designing and producing environmentally friendly products and their life-cycle processing systems, depending heavily on the research and graduates of MIST (the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology), which is linked to the world-famous MIT. Cars will be banned in the city and an ambitious wall will keep the hot desert air out, reducing the dependence on air-conditioning to produce a living environment very distinct from that of other UAE cities.

SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE

SMART CITY SAN DIEGO A collaborative effort between the City of San Diego, the University of California, San Diego Gas & Electric, General Electric and Clean Tech San Diego, the project aims to accelerate the process by which US cities make the wholesale switch from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. The solar-to-electric vehicle (EV) is central in this, as is improved public transport, and the initiative forms part of a larger process to which ten US cities are contributing. City lights and similar services are transferring to more energy-efficient options, which also reduce costs, while a network of sensors will provide drivers with the best traffic options and free parking spaces. As well as speeding up emergency response times, a bike and pedestrian-friendly route network is being created throughout San Diego. The ultimate aim is not only to clean up the city, but also to make it an international centre for smart city technology and development. So any ambitious urban initiative of this kind is inextricably linked to forging a path to the New Economy, where smart cities with smart technologies can become the knowledge hubs around which new dynamic growth can develop.

SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE

SINGAPORE Not every country has the means, space or centralised authority of the UAE. Indeed, cities such as Singapore are already densely built up and lack space, but this is not deterring the small nation’s leaders, who are embarking upon a veritable metamorphosis of the city state and its economy. The Committee on the Future Economy has the task to proactively respond to the future challenges and needs of Singapore by planning ahead. Where Masdar City works from a clean sheet, creating a master plan from scratch, Singapore is working to transform a busy, industrious city from within with a series of ambitious urban renewal projects that could show the rest of the world how to do it.

will be collected at Jurong Island, while the Changi Air Hub intends to take the passenger and logistics role of airports to the next level. Urban renewal features strongly in business and science parks such as those of Changi, One-North, Punggol and Jurong, where names such as ‘Innovation District’ indicate the strong central focus on next-generation manufacturing, urban solutions, clean technology and smart logistics, as well as continued focus on the digital and biochemical technologies that will feed them. As green spaces and leisure areas form part of the plan, Singapore is also looking to lose its industrial feel and make the city of the future a clean, pleasant environment for its most important component, humans.

Firstly, the important container harbour activities will be concentrated in one spot, saving space and reducing the impact on city life. This is also true of the refineries, power stations and chemical plants, which

THE WORLD OF GOLD VILLÆ 54

By Michel Cruz

All that glitters may not be gold, but “the desire for gold is the most universal and deeply rooted commercial instinct of the human race.” Indeed, this bewitching metal has had a great influence in shaping society and remains as desirable an object as ever.

L

ong before credit cards or even standard currency, gold was already a universally accepted medium of exchange, a measure of wealth and value that continues be so in our modern times. We no longer use the Gold Standard to underwrite our currencies – simply because it is too expensive – but in times of uncertainty the most precious of metals is still the refuge of choice, and as a result has seen its values peak during economic recessions and financial and political crises. Once set free to follow its intrinsic market value, gold soared to $850 per troy ounce during the recession of 1980. By the turn of the millennium it had fallen back down to $250 per ounce but rose to new heights after the financial crisis of 2009 – reaching an all-time high of over $1900 per ounce in 2011.

An object of desire Today we lust for the luxury icons of a modern era – sports cars, super yachts, private aeroplanes, modern mansions and the latest technological gadgets – but for millennia the greatest reflection of wealth and power was gold, a commodity whose possession imbued kings with righteous might, built armies and gave birth to empires. What’s more, the obsession with gold is not cultural but universal, shimmering brightly in the history and mythology of civilisations from Egypt and Rome to Persia, India and Africa. It is fair to say that the Aztecs and Incas were as entranced by the golden glow of its lustre as were the Celts and Mongols. To be a king was to adorn oneself with gold, and even now fine jewellery is nothing without it.

This instinct to run to gold in times of uncertainty is a natural instinct that dates back to the dawn of human civilisation. In fact, few other natural phenomena have shaped our world vision as much the hunger instilled by gold many thousands of years ago, for it is irrevocably paired to wealth, power, beauty and the earthly delights that mankind lusts after. In economic terms gold is a hedge against depreciation in its own right, judged not by its ability to produce income or its demand in manufacturing but quite simply out of a deeply seeded intrinsic desirability that is second only to the basic necessities of life. For this reason it could be said that money stored in gold is unproductive, yet without the safety valve of gold our financial and economic system could not function as efficiently.

Not surprisingly, many of the greatest objects ever made by human hands are crafted from this noble material, ranging from royal crowns and the most exquisite jewellery to grand statues, domes, ornate gilded decoration and even homeware. In the Middle East, where the demand for gold jewellery and luxury items is perhaps the greatest, it has even been used to coat entire cars. While many will baulk at such ‘tasteless’ displays, it does confirm the fact that gold is as much an expression of wealth – whether newfound or born into – as it ever was. As the global economies revive and the gold price stabilises it is this undying fascination with all things gold and lustrous that remains as strong for shoppers in a Dubai mall today as it was for the ancient kings of Babylonia.

Living in the hills of Ticino Castelrotto, Lugano, Switzerland

The lakes of Ticino are a slice of heaven where the sky is reflected in emerald waters and verdant pastures plunge down from their Alpine heights embedded in the hills. This is a place of privilege and has been so for as long as memory serves. Not surprisingly, even a small property is a treasure in and around the elegant city of Lugano, but a hillside country estate is what for many comes closest to paradise on earth. Castelrotto is exactly this, one of the nest estates in the Ticino region and a haven of peace, privacy and natural splendour just half an hour from Lugano. Dense forests roll down hills crowned with charming villages whose church bells add to the charm and lustre of the setting. There is no highway in sight, no railway line, no modern building or dense concentration of human activity anywhere as the eye scans the harmonious surroundings. This being Switzerland everything works perfectly, but the pace of life is gentle. It is here that a tycoon bought land in the 1960s and created a magnificent 15,000 square metre park overlooked by a mansion to match its beauty. The property is enveloped by a further ten hectares of private woodland to create what is one VILLÆ 58

of the finest park estates in all of Switzerland. The temperate greenery of the garden attains a more Mediterranean feel by the pool, while the long driveway winds its way through wooded lawns flanked with brightly coloured flowering plants. The gates, irrigation system and illumination are all automated, combining 21st century convenience with classic sophistication in a setting close to golf, lakeside diversions and the Lugano airport. Measuring a total built area of 3,400 square metres with 21 bedroom suites, this truly is a country mansion, complete with sumptuous entertainment areas, a luxurious main villa, a guest villa with 12 suites and ten conference rooms, plus separate staff apartments. The country kitchen is designed for professional catering and the poolside bar is one of the places it has served guests in the past. Whether used as a private home or managed as a luxurious country retreat, Castelrotto is the epitome of opulent living close to Lake Lugano.

A modern fairy tale in Spain The Palace and Forest of La Serreta, Spain

The region at the heart of Spain, near Madrid, derives its very name from the Spanish word for ‘castle’, for this is the land of the Reconquista, a world of medieval castles, monasteries and classic palaces such as those of Aranjuez and El Escorial. Within this magical circle of palaces and castles lays La Serreta, an authentic private estate consisting of a tastefully renovated stately home surrounded by acres of woodland. Though it has been updated to offer the comforts and requirements of today, this is an estate that traces its roots back to the 12th century. The earlier fortified structure was converted into a palace in 1464, ten years before Isabella of Spain was crowned in nearby Segovia. Over time, La Serreta became a grand hunting estate and place of retreat for nobles of the Spanish court. The estate has been renovated and modernised with great attention, taste and care, resulting in a

property that looks and feels fresh, comfortable, luxurious and yet imbued with classic breeding and elegance. The main palace contains eight bedroom suites, its own chapel and a series of refined reception rooms. Alongside it stands a 280 square metre villa that houses five suites and similarly offers fantastic views across the woodlands to the Sierra de Guadarrama. The park-like gardens extend around the property, but the estate is surrounded by another 37,000 hectares of stateprotected forest. It is an estate made for riding, and the property counts 100 American Quarter purebloods and facilities for the housing, training and management of polo and dressage horses. In addition to cultivation and wineries, this estate also offers potential for the creation of a golf course, polo fields and/or spa hotel to produce a landed retreat within short range of Madrid.

Quite the contrary; with the space available to it, this is a meticulously styled country villa of 750 square metres distributed over two levels with an accompanying pool deck and outdoor bar and dining area. It offers a modern interpretation of classic country architecture and interiors adapted to today’s tastes and lifestyle, yet accompanied by the latest technologies and environmental design to offer a very rare new country estate.

The views from its gently raised position are picture postcard, starting with a classic driveway leading up to an elegant home that blends authenticity and modern amenities with Italian flair. The property is one of the finest of its kind in Tuscany, and not surprisingly caught the eye of one of Italy’s cinematic geniuses – actor Marcello Mastroianni – for whom this was a beloved place of rest and relaxation. One can only wonder about the wonderfully animated parties and gatherings that must have taken place here, bringing creative minds from around the world to the rustic garden and outdoor terraces, made for grand Italian country meals.

Successful international cooperation “The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more,” Dr. J.E. Salk

The productive cooperation between members of EREN continues to grow, and this implies not only an increase in cross-border transactions but also the ability to offer an ever-improving service to our international clients. A signature benefit of working with an EREN member firm is the expertise and high quality of service each member gives its clients, while working cooperatively with the highest degrees of trust and accountability. Here is a sample of case studies from the past few months.

The JLL team in Hong Kong

Client recommendation at Asia Roadshow. JLL Residential, an active member of EREN who bring people together across continents has an interesting story of successful international cooperation to share with us:

Metropol Park, Berlin

“A Hong Kong customer who bought a luxury penthouse at Germany's tallest skyscaper Grand Tower in the fall of 2016 on our roadshow in Hong Kong, also visited our roadshow in Shanghai the spring of 2017. He was accompanied by a business partner who wanted to find out more about the German real estate market. Our presentation of Daniel Libeskind's spectacular Verve convinced him to buy two truly extraordinary and spectacular residences. In addition, both customers purchased a penthouse in Luisenpark Berlin-Mitte for their private portfolios.”

Successful international cooperation

EREN'S technology strikes again. From New Jersey to Valencia. It was February when a client from New Jersey contacted us, interested in some of Rimontgó’s exclusive properties located in Valencia and the coast of Jávea. The contact was thanks to the powerful functionality of technology developed by EREN (including new inhouse design CRM, websites, blogs…). It was a family with three children. The father is a great golfer, when he has free time, and she enjoys swimming, one of her passions, while the eldest child a promising player of tennis. They had previously visited our country, mainly Barcelona and its surroundings. Despite their status and high standard of living in the United States of America, they were captivated by our quality lifestyle, cuisine, people, as well as the endless possibilities of leisure in our country.

Rimontgó’s excellent personalised service paid complete attention to every detail that the client could need, which was the final step that lead to them to their final decision. It is true that the clients were quite sure in what they were looking for, which significantly helped to shorten the search. However, at the start, the family disregarded the house that they ended up buying, and it was thanks to Rimontgó’s commercial team and its great capacity to listen to the client, as well as understand what they were really looking for, who recommended them to go and see it. After visiting it, they made the decision to buy the villa and they thanked us for insisting. Rimontgó helped them throughout the buying process as they had limited availability to travel to Spain due to work com-

Valencia

When they started their search, they were also interested in houses around Barcelona, as it was the region that they knew best due to their previous stays in Spain. In the end, after visiting Valencia, they discovered its charm and they opted for an impressive house in one of the best residential areas in the city. The couple could not come to Valencia until the end of March. Rimontgó’s commercial team was at their disposal throughout, guiding them in the purchase process, but also in showing them the city.

mitments - he works for an important finance company and she is in the design and decoration sector-. Therefore, they made the purchase through powers of attorney in favour of their lawyers. Rimontgó also helped them during the construction phase to personalise the villa, during the move, and in other after-sales services they might need. Currently, they enjoy the property as much as they can, travelling to Valencia during their free time; and in a few years, they hope this to be their family residence.

Jávea

All the way from Quebec: A slow romance with the Mediterranean sea. It is not a question about selling a house, but to build a home, and for that, we need to attend to numerous details. This is demonstrated through Rimontgó’s experience with a Canadian couple, who contacted us in January of last year from Quebec through EREN’s website in French (www.lesmaisonsdeluxe.com). They ended up acquiring one of the most impressive villas in Jávea in October of that same year. Their attraction for the Mediterranean lifestyle grew as we helped them along their journey.

Jávea

From the start, they expressed their interest for the Costa Blanca, which was then settled through various phone calls and the exchange of emails. After the first selection of properties, they were finally able to organise a trip to Jávea, in the Spring, to visit the properties that they were interested in. When the couple arrived, they were treated like family and they were accompanied to all the main attractions of the area. Jávea

Rimontgó did not limit themselves to purely showing them villas, but also, advised them on various matters, such as, the subject of the purchase procedure or matters related to the maintenance of their future home. By the time they found the perfect house; a villa with a modern architectural style, boasting panoramic views of the bay of Jávea, they were completely determined in the purchase. Not just because of the exclusivity of the property, with the highest qualities and the latest technology, but for the confidence they had

gained through the whole process. Even today Rimontgó is in contact with this couple, who enjoy a pleasant life in their well-established home with the sea as their backdrop. Beyond clients, they are good friends, who we do not hesitate to help in terms of maintenance, garden maintenance, heating installation and the security of the home. They claim to enjoy the tranquility and comfort of their surroundings, consequently their romance with the Mediterranean goes on for longer.
