Cover Photo: by Agnieszka Gulczynska Fotografia https://fotogulczynska.wordpress.com Truskawka is a place where two people – Agnieszka and Paweł – live together with a team of horses, surrounded by nature and in the atmosphere of mutual respect. This is the place where this photo was taken – the photo of Jagódka and Igor on the back of wonderful Idrys. His owner, Agnieszka, says: Idrys is a Hutsul born on 12th May 1993 in a free team of horses in the mountains. The son of Jas´min, a wellknown horse in Poland. Wisdom, calmness, composure and strength - that is how he can be briefly described. Despite his age, he is the leader of the team. He is still willing to take young riders for a stroll in the forest. Lessons on the round-pen are not his cup of tea. “To everything there is a season” – words from the depth of his heart.

STRINGHALT Background

Stringhalt is the same in all countries, but it’s the extreme weather in Australia that tends to promote the condition. Australian Stringhalt (AS) is a debilitating condition of pasture based horses characterised by involuntary hyper(over) flexion of the hind limbs when attempting to move (ataxia). It’s now known that it is likely due to the neurotoxin produced by the plant ‘Hypochaeris radicata’, otherwise known as catsear, flatweed, cat’s-ear, hairy cat’s ear or false dandelion, when it’s stressed. Usually there are drought-like conditions associated with lack of grassy pasture, so the horse will tend to eat far too much of the plant, resulting in what is called ‘Australian Stringhalt’. A study conducted by the Melbourne University (Charles El-Hage 2011) has revealed unidentified primary and secondary metabolites from the stressed plant likely to be responsible for the condition, though the specific neurotoxin is yet to be identified. “The suggested role of (fungal) mycotoxins appears unlikely as a causal factor in AS despite several suggestions they were a possible cause of the condition. Analysis of H. radicata from two properties with AS revealed no evidence of alkaloids. The analysis was wide ranging encompassing many groups of compounds recognised as toxins associated with neurological disorders in grazing livestock. The absence of mycotoxins would limit the usefulness as agents such as mycotoxin binders being administered to protect against the onset of AS.” (El-Hage Dec. 2011) The neurotoxin of the stressed Hypochaeris radicata (flat weed) is thought to affect the myelin sheath of nerves of the CNS, which not only causes ataxia, but could potentially be lethal if not treated.

Identifying the plant The soil that favours the growth of the false dandelion is usually granite/light soils, overgrazed and acidic in ph. False Dandelion has coarse flat small leaves with fine needles. False dandelion has multiple flowering heads as you can see in the image.

4 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

Compare the image of False dandelion and True dandelion. True Dandelion is a wonderful herb and it is not to be confused with false dandelion in its impact on the horse other than as a wonderful liver tonic, natural diuretic and adding genuine nutritional diversity to a horses diet. The soft green leaves can be harvested and used as bitter greens in a salad at home. Something that you could not do with False Dandelion! Any suggestion that it has the same impact as False Dandelion is unfounded.

Managing the condition Herbs can have wonderful benefits for the horse affected by stringhalt. There are many herbs traditionally used that support the central nervous system and aid muscular strength for repair. Mugwort has traditionally been known to have an affinity for nourishing the myelin sheath and is thought to improve receptivity to neuropeptides therefore improving functionality to nerves. Valerian is another herb that is well known to help relax tight muscles and I use this regularly for people with profound muscular spasm , ataxia and neuralgia to great effect. Our standard stringhalted mix includes Elecampagne, Dandelion, Magnesium Phosphate, Mugwort, Pine Bark, Sage, Saw Palmetto and Valerian along with the Bach Flowers Heather, Vine, Elm, Vervain and Rescue Remedy.

Feeding your horse Feeding the horse with a clean whole food diet is critical. The diet must be high forage, with plenty of natural oils to help nourish the myelin sheath. Evening primrose oil is known to have an affinity with the myelin sheath in humans, and may therefore have a similar benefit in horses. My preferred oil is flax seed oil and coconut oil. Feeding out ground flaxseed meal and coconut meal (which is also high in proteins) is recommended.

Over the years when supporting horses with stringhalt we have found that feeding a probiotic and not feeding lucerne hay is useful. Whilst there have been no scientific studies done on this , anecdotal evidence suggests that horses with stringhalt seem to recover quicker when not fed lucerne. In pondering on the reason why this is the case I can only surmise that irrigated lucerne is high in nitrates due to super phosphate in hay production. Plant sterols seemingly interfere with the neuro- endocrine system which can cause metabolic / endocrine disruption in some horses- especially mares. A pre-biotic is useful in the case of stringhalt. Our Equigesta-Pre contains a combination of pure herbal powders, brewer’s yeast and bentonite clay. Bentonite, Brewer’s Yeast, Liquorice Powder, Fennel Powder, Slippery Elm Powder, Aloe Vera Powder, Chamomile Powder all supporting the microbiota for improved digestion and protection from gastric upset. Access to Low GI hay 24/7 is also advised. Other herbs can be given as part of the diet to improve nutritional diversity , which is critical when feeding a whole food 100% natural diet.

What about Magnesium? Magnesium supplementation has also shown to be beneficial in many mild cases of stringhalt. Magnesium is naturally occurring in balance in many herbs such as Chamomile and Valerian. Dolomite is also high in magnesium. The tissue salt Magnesium Phosphate is also beneficial and is included on our Stringhalted mix.

Exercise As far as exercise goes, the horse must be able to walk around, but don’t push them. They must be calm. Spooking and running around will make the horse anxious, impacting healing.

Key management points: • Remove the horse from the pasture • Feed whole food – low GI. suggest speedy beet, copra meal, Teff Hay, herbs, ground linseed and Dolomite. • Keep your horse warm in winter and cool in summer • Don’t feed lucerne hay • Feed a pre and pro biotic to protect your horse from gut dysbiosis. • Fresh water easily accessible

About the Author – Catherine McDowell

Medicine of Mother Nature… I was first introduced to the concept of Herbal Lore when I was very young. I think one of the earliest influences I can remember was from my grandparents, who were very traditional Bathurst farmers of the well known Cox family. My grandfather had the “people’s home library” which was a compendium of all kinds of home cures. Herbal Medicine is, at its core, studying nature and the humanities. It’s about observing our diet, our environment and how we respond. Keeping a balance is difficult in the modern era as we are no longer interacting with our environment in the same way as we may have done even as little as a 100 years ago. As a Dorothy Hall graduate working along side the well known Robert McDowell for many years and furthering my education with Dennis Stewart, I have developed my own unique application of herbal remedies. Working primarily with animals (Horses and Dogs) has been the most rewarding. Having seen herbs work so well in so many cases has proven to me time and again the under-utilised power of herbal medicine. It is heartening to see now Vets, and some Medical Doctors seeing the traditional application of herbs as useful. My comprehensive service includes free animal consultations 24/7 via my web site, and face to face consultation at 61 Corporation Avenue, Bathurst NSW 2795.

McDOWELLS HERBAL partners with AUSTRALIAN BRUMBY CHALLENGE EQUITANA Melbourne has announced a new major sponsor in 2018, McDowells Herbal Treatments. McDowells will be the official Naming Rights Partner of the Australian Brumby Challenge and Brumby Village, which is set to return for a highly anticipated second year at the event. The Australian Brumby Challenge was developed by the Victoria Brumby Association and launched at EQUITANA Melbourne in 2016. The Challenge follows the journey of 20 trainers as they transform untamed Brumbies passively captured from Victoria’s high country, from wild to wonderful in 150 days. The Final is held across four days of EQUITANA, with trainers showcasing the transformation of their Brumby in front the crowd and an expert panel of judges. There are two categories of the McDowells Brumby Challenge, Ridden and Youth. In the Ridden Challenge, Brumbies aged four and older are saddle trained. In the Youth Challenge, yearling aged Brumbies are trained and presented in hand only, not to be started under saddle or sat on. As the official partner, McDowells Herbal will be supplying all registered Brumbies and trainers with herbal products and supplements across the 150 days of the challenge to support and compliment the transition from living in the wild to becoming a beloved equine partner.

Victorian Brumby Association President, Colleen O’Brien, is excited to see McDowells Herbal partner with the Australian Brumby Challenge as the Naming Rights Partner in 2018. “We are very excited to align with such a reputable company for the McDowells Brumby Challenge at EQUITANA,” said O’Brien. “McDowells Herbal Treatments is a perfect fit for the Challenge and we can’t wait to see the transformation in our Brumbies on their wonderful range of natural products to support overall health and wellness.” David and Cath McDowell are proud to partner with EQUITANA in 2018 and align with a competition that is producing amazing outcomes for Victoria’s wild horses. “We are excited to be supporting the Australian Brumby Challenge this year in the humane rehoming and re-education of Victoria’s Brumbies and witnessing the transformation of these beautiful horses on our herbal treatments,” said Cath McDowell. All Brumbies will be available to purchase through registered auction at the conclusion of the competition on the final day of EQUITANA, with all profits going towards the conservation of the Victoria’s Brumby sustainability project. The Challenge will officially begin on 23 June and interested parties can follow the journey of their favourite trainers and horses through the official EQUITANA website and Facebook page.

The Brumbies for this years Australian Brumby Challenge come from the Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales. They have been passively trapped as part of an ongoing Park management program and would otherwise have faced likely slaughter. Mares have come back to our sanctuary to foal down in peace and spent a minimum of eight months turned out without a foal at foot to regain their vigour and strength. Stallions have been brought back to our sanctuary, gelded by our vets (through our race system) and turned out in a mixed age and sex group to learn to socialise as a gelding. Yearlings were all conceived in the wild in Kosciuszko and born here at our sanctuary, where they have grown up in wild, mixed age/ sex herds with their mothers. All Brumbies are completely unhandled, however have become accustomed to living in standard farm fenced paddocks, will drink from artificial water sources and have been treated for basic worms, microchipped and vaccinated. All colts and stallions are gelded. The Brumbies who will be participating in the Australian Brumby Challenge will remain under the ownership of the Victorian Brumby Association for the entirety of the event, until they are either sold at a private (registered, approved bidders only) auction at the completion of the finals at Equitana, or purchased by their trainers.

The moment you see signs of worry back off and repeat the previous step until your horse is happy before progressing again. Some ground rules – never tie your horse up

To desensitise your horse to a stimulus means to reduce its response. So what is desensitisation? Well the opposite of sensitisation! And that’s the tricky bit, you must be very clear of what you’re doing as you might accidentally do the opposite and sensitise your horse! To desensitise your horse to a stimulus means to reduce its response. Horses are flight animals and can be very reactive to things in the environment. This is necessary when they’re roaming around in the wild, but can cause problems if you happen to be sitting on them when they have a massive response to a plastic bag flying past! We can desensitise them to common objects they will encounter, such as plastic bags, loud noises, whips etc. In all our desensitisation training we’re teaching the horse to stand still when something scares them and this is the opposite of what they would do in the wild. After a while this becomes the response to any scary stimulus as they develop trust that you will look after them and remain calm and steady yourself. Then a totally new scary object that you’ve never trained them to accept can appear while you’re riding and they will stand still and look to you for guidance. Magic! That’s what we all want.

If you’re working at desensitisation and your horse becomes fearful, that is, increases its response, STOP, that is not the goal. At no point should your horse feel fear. Your job is to be checking your horse all the time looking for signs of worry – the ears back, tail swishing, eyes bulging/black/fearful, frowning, lifting the head, bracing the neck etc. The moment you see signs of worry back off and repeat the previous step until your horse is happy before progressing again. If necessary keep going back one step until your horse is completely accepting of that stage. Then you can slowly start moving onto more difficult things again. Your job is to not push the horse over the line into fear. If you do they no longer learn as they can’t think when they’re afraid, plus that’s where you can actually sensitise them instead of desensitising, and that’s not what we want. This is a great exercise in itself, as it really trains the human to feel and see what’s happening for the horse and be in the present moment. Every horse is different, so you need to know how your own horse expresses worry. One horse I work with always has a calm eye but his tail starts swishing like mad if he’s worried, so I’m always looking there when introducing something new to him. But for the majority, it’s the eye that shows how the horse is feeling, so start there.

If you’re working at desensitisation and your horse becomes fearful, that is, increases its response, STOP!

8 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

when introducing a scary object and hold the lead rope yourself, so you can move with them if need be. Let them smell, lick and explore the scary object with their mouth. If this is beyond them hold the scary object and move away from the horse, asking them to follow you with the lead rope. Then the horse is following the scary object which is moving away from them, this makes the whole situation much less scary. Touch the place where you’re going to start with your hand first, giving it a rub and a few pats, this will make it less sensitive. With most horses I find the shoulder the best place to start but this can vary. Then calmly but confidently touch with the scary object and remove it before the horse shows fear. If you watch your horses’ signs you should be able to see this. Gradually extend the time you stay there and then start moving it over other parts of the body.

Safety first, so if it’s dangerous get out of there! Let’s say you’ve introduced an object and didn’t notice the signs and the horse starts moving away. Safety first, so if it’s dangerous get out of there. If it’s safe try and stay with your horse while they move, that’s why you’re holding the lead rope. Keep them in a small circle around you, holding the object touching them until they stop moving and then immediately remove it. Sometimes you may need to show them the solution to the problem with a little stop pressure on the halter. Repeat, repeat, repeat and you’ll find after a while you can touch them with the object and they’ll stand still. What we want to show them is that the scary object goes away when they stand still, NOT when they’re moving.

What we want to show them is that the scary object goes away when they stand still, NOT when they’re moving.

AUTUMN 2018

Once you’ve learnt these principles with an easy object, apply them to other situations. Hosing, spray bottles, plastic bags, tarps and umbrellas are some things you can use but it’s really only limited by your imagination. Once they accept the object touching the body you can try things like having them walk over it, throwing it under their tummy and out the other side, using the object to make loud noises, waving the object around at different places around them, the list is endless. DROUGHT FEEDING

Dr J H Stewart BVSc BSc PhD Equine Veterinarian and Consultant Nutritionist

Feeding a horse is usually the largest cost of ownership – and never more so than in times of drought. When the grass has browned off – or completely gone availability and price are the deciders when it comes to what to feed! With a little planning and a knowledge of how to construct a diet with alternative or unusual feedstuffs, it is possible to provide a pretty wellbalanced diet. In drought years, good quality forage may be too expensive or unavailable. So let’s look at the safety and efficacy of options for feeds not traditionally fed to horses. 10 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

AUTUMN 2018

Forage/fibre is the mandatory cornerstone for gut and horse health. Even in drought times a minimum of 1% of bodyweight in fibre must be provided. Table 1 shows the minimum amount of roughage that must always be fed – even in times of drought, and the minimum total daily feed intake - which can be 90% roughage or a mixture of roughage + concentrate.

Table 1. MINIMUM TOTAL DAILY INTAKES Daily minimum amount of chaff or hay (1% of bodyweight)

Regardless of the class of horse, the necessary roughage cannot be abandoned - even when traditional forage is difficult to find.

Roughages, by definition, are feeds that are over 17% fibre. In addition to hay and pasture, there are many other high fibre feeds that can be used to totally replace or partially replace the roughage portion of your horse’s diet. Table 2 lists some alternative roughage sources, along with their replacement value relative to grass or alfalfa hay. Feeds with moderate levels of fibre (11 to 15 percent crude fibre) can also serve as an alternative during drought. These lower fibre feeds can’t totally replace the roughage your horse needs, but they can reduce the amount of hay you have to feed. Start by ensuring your horse receives at least 1% of its body weight per day in roughage (Table 1). Then use moderate fibre feeds to complete the remaining portion of the diet. The feedstuffs in Table 2 can be fed to ‘stretch’ the hay supply – and in some cases replace it. So when chaff and hay are just not available or just way too expensive, the following feedstuffs can be used: cereal grain straw, ground corn cobs, hulls, whole corn plants can be pelleted and fed to horses for an energy source but, to provide a balanced diet, a protein, vitamin and mineral supplement must also be fed. By taking the time to carefully select top quality roughage (ie low in dust, mould, contaminants and weeds) and continually monitoring consumption patterns, you can make sure you’re providing the best possible diets in times of scarcity.

Oat straw is palatable, soft and doesnt have the awns often present in wheat or barley straw. Low in protein, calcium and Vitamin A, high in phosphorus so supplement required especially in old, young, pregnant or Yes Yes 1.25kg 1.5kg working horses. Ammmonia, sodium hydroxide or acid treatment followed by yeast inoculation increases digestibility compared to untreated straw. Good source of fibre and calcium; feed up to 4kg per day, pellets can be soaked. Very low in phosphorus and B-vitamin content and contains no No Yes 700g 850g vitamin A. Hulls from most cereal grains are typically safe and low-cost, especially for mature horses. They satisfy appetite and reduce boredom. obesity and vices. Soybean hulls, sunflower hulls and wheat mids are low in protein, calcium and phosphorus and a good supplement is required. Cottonseed hulls, peanut hulls, rice mill feed (rice grains + hulls) and even paper (free of dyes) can also be fed in limited amounts to provide fibre. Rice hulls alone offer almost no feed value and are not suitable for horses due to their No Yes 800g 1kg sharp edges - can be used if ground. All hulls can be very dusty and low in protein, vitamin A and calcium. Peanut hulls have a high risk of aflatoxin contamination and are rarely fed to horses - if tested free of aflatoxin and dust they can be used. Limit hulls to 10% of the diet by weight and ensure free of dust, mould and foreign material; provide a well-formulated concentrate for vitamins and minerals. whole corn plants can be pelleted and fed to horses for energy source but, to provide a balanced diet, a protein, vitamin and mineral supplement must No Yes also be fed. These include coconut meal, corn gluten meal, cotton-seed meal, linseed meal, safflower meal, soybean meal and sunflower meal, all high in protein but amino acid profiles vary (this is important for young and working horses if you are looking for muscle development and not just ‘condition’ ie fat cover. If high in oil or full-fat rancidity can be a problem - so go for quality. These have almost 3 x the energy of grains so good if youre looking for body condition or work capacity

If grains increase in price, look at alternatives (Table 3) such as bran (usually wheat or rice), but as they are low in calcium and very high in phosphorus, it’s absolutely necessary to provide calcium. Beet pulp is safe and higher in calcium than phosphorus – but low in protein, vitamins A, B and D. To correct deficiencies in the feedstuffs, include a small amount of a correctly-formulated concentrate. Depending on age, weight, work and reproductive status only 300-700g should be required to balance most diets. Pregnant, lactating and especially growing horses benefit from lucerne – so if it is in limited supply, reserve it for these horses. When making changes to your horse’s diet, note (preferably in a diary) any even slight changes in personality, manure, behaviour or activity of your horse. Often any changes are really subtle – the horse might seem just ‘off’ or not ‘themself’ or they may have less energy, loss of appetite or changes in manure – all of which can signal a sensitivity to the feed change. So always make changes in a gradual transition over 2-3 weeks – go slowly. It’s so important to be aware of a 10-year study of colic that found a change in feed or less grazing time were the number one risk factor for colic! Worth reading on cost control and other feedstuffs that can be fed to horses, is an excellent book on drought feeding by David Nash. http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0020/228530/ RIRDC-Drought-Feeding-and-Management-for-Horses.pdf

Feeding by weight is more precise than feeding by volume and avoids sudden fluctuations in the levels of nutrients, particularly energy. However drought conditions change this. Both yield and the nutrient levels are affected by drought and it cannot be assumed that what a horse eats one day will be the same as the next – even though there has been no change in the amount or type of feed given. In addition, volume and weight vary with the dipper used. Because of the effects of drought on grains, the weight of feed can vary – even though volume doesn’t – due to variations in weight per bushel between and within grains. Lower weight grains have less energy per unit of volume. For example, the same volume of oats can vary in weight by up to 30%, depending on soil fertility, variety and growing conditions. Over time, oats have been measured in pounds (lbs) per bushel – a bushel being 35.24 litres. Ideally a bushel of oats should weigh 40lbs, but can be anything from 27lbs to 52lbs. The lower weight grains have less energy per unit of volume. Thus a horse could receive almost twice as much by weight if heavier oats are used.

AUTUMN 2018

Table 3. ALTERNATIVE FEEDSTUFFS If your horse is getting at least 1% of it’s body weight as hay or other roughage each day, these feedstuffs can be included in the balance of the diet. Feed Rice bran Wheat bran Ground corn cobs

Notes: Provide free-choice access to water and salt High in fat and phosphorus, need calcium supplement; 1/2kg can replace 1kg of grass hay and 600g can replace 1kg of lucerne. High in phosphorus; calcium supplement required; 600g can replace 1kg of grassy and 700g can replace 1kg of lucerne hay or chaff. Around 30% less energy than oats and little in the way of vitamin, minerals and protein but good fibre

Oats

Feed no more than 1% of bodyweight each day, vitamin/mineral supplement needed. Divide the daily amount into several smaller meals. Each grain meal should not exceed 0.5 percent of body weight. Make any changes to the diet gradually over 1 to 2 weeks.

Corn gluten meal & corn gluten feed, distillers grains Potatoes Citrus pulp Bakery products

Provide fibre, low in starch, enough energy for mature horses; corn gluten and meal can be fed at 5% of the diet for young and working horses and 10% for mature horses. Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) can be fed at 15% of the diet. One concern with these by-products is mycotoxins from mould. There are several hundred types of mycotoxins and many can survive the milling process. Drought and other stressors can increase susceptibility to mould infection. However, all cereal grains and forages may have mould and mycotoxin contamination. Not palatable to all horses, high in moisture so may cause loose manure, chop to prevent choke. Never feed green, rotting or sprouting potatoes. Has been fed to horses for many years especially in times of drought; a substitue for oats, can be included in pellets at 15%, These are usually low in fibre and high in fat; can be included at 10% of the diet, risk of mould so feed straight away

Feeding by weight then is important because the weight per dipper determines the energy density of the feed. However, during prolonged and severe drought, grain protein composition changes. The result of these sources of variation is that although it is assumed that there has been no change in feeding, there can in fact be considerable variation in the amount fed to an individual horse from one day to the next. This is often overlooked in the evaluation of the potential role of nutrition in the aetiology of certain conditions, such as changes in form, laminitis, colic, gastric ulcers, osteochondrosis and tying up.

Monitoring water, weeds and worms is also important during a drought. Horses require 30 to 50 litres of water each day. Water quality can be compromised during drought – manure contamination, salinity, stagnation, algal growth (encouraged by sunlight and fertilisers) can all make water undrinkable. Horses fare best when the salinity (called ‘total dissolved solids’) is around 4000mg/litre and not over 6000. They can tolerate 6-7000mg/litre but only for a short period. There are several products approved for control of blue-green algae. A quick check with your local state department of agriculture is worthwhile as they must be used in strict accordance with their label conditions and directions – and these can vary between states. Most are registered for use in farm dams, rice paddies and irrigation conveyance, but cannot be used in, or contaminate rivers, streams, creeks, wetlands, lakes or billabongs. Horses, as we know are browsers and foragers – and when feed/pasture is less available – or not at all, they may eat weeds, trees, plants, bushes etc that are not ordinarily selected. This is fine as long as the plants are not toxic! Have a walk around your paddocks, taking time to identify the species of vegetation. Note that some plants are only poisonous at certain times of the year or under certain conditions. Endless information is available to help work out if you have a potential risk that needs to be managed and there are some excellent publications on plants that are poisonous to horses.1,2,3 Knowledge of what plants are a problem in your local area or areas your horse may be moving/travelling to, is a good thing to have and most state agriculture departments have written reviews to assist owners. An unexpected risk in droughts is laminitis – normally associated with spring and times of abundance. A plant is basically a sugar factory, turning sunlight into energy. The amount of sunlight determines the amount of sugar produced, and the amount of growth determines how much sugar is used. When there is plenty of sun, but not much growth due to lack of water, the sugar isn’t being used up and is stored in the plant. What this means to us as horse owners is that even dead, brown-looking dried up plants can be high in sugar. Any horse or pony that is at risk for founder or is insulin-resistant will be at risk – even in times of drought!

Acupressure to the rescue! By Amy Snow & Nancy Zidonis, Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute Founders Acupressure can be a lifesaver in emergency situations such as colic, shock and/or injury Young, old, Thoroughbred, pony, Draft – every horse on earth can suddenly get hurt, experience colic, or have any number of emergent conditions occur. Some of these health events are truly a matter of life and death, whereas others require immediate attention but are not as dire, and the horse is most likely to recover over time. Colic is the number-one cause of death in horses. No matter what, call your holistic veterinarian immediately if you suspect your horse is about to colic or already in some stage of colic. There are many different types of colic and your veterinarian needs to diagnose and treat it promptly. The early signs of colic include: lying down more than usual, lack of appetite, resisting activity, lack of gut sounds, standing “camped-out,” changes in manure(less, dry, loose, or decreased quantity),and possible weight loss. If the colic progresses and the abdominal pain becomes more severe, horses tend to paw the ground with their foreleg, kick or bite at their flank, lie down and get up repetitively, exhibit rolling, sweating, or groaning, and present with elevated respiratory and heart rates. Hopefully, your veterinarian has arrived before your horse reaches this level of severity.

Colic is only one of the many dangerous situations horses can experience. When feed obstructs the horse’s esophagus and he is unable to swallow, he will desperately try to choke up the obstruction. This causes green fluids to pour from his nose and mouth. It is scary to see a horse choke. Thankfully, the fluid helps dislodge the feed bolus from the horse’s throat and is less likely to be life-threatening. Injuries can occur at any time. Puncture wounds, lacerations, tendon and joint injuries, and over- exertion, to mention just a few which all need immediate attention although rarely are life- threatening. Learning first aid techniques is a good idea, especially in the case of excessive bleeding. Having a dry bandage available so you can apply direct pressure to the wound to stem the blood flow would be smart. Your veterinarian can evaluate what further treatment is necessary.

Stay Calm Don’t panic! Your job is to stay calm during any emergency. After you call your veterinarian, there are things you can do while waiting for your vet to arrive. The first thing to remember is that even though the situation is scary, it is very important for you to stay calm. To help you stay calm, there’s a simple acupressure point you can hold while breathing slowly.

The acupressure point, (or “acupoint”), is called Large Intestine 4 (LI 4), He Gu in Chinese and known as “Adjoining Valley” in English. This point is located in the webbing between your thumb and forefinger. Place your thumb and forefinger on each side of the webbing of the opposite hand while taking three deep breaths in through your nose then exhaling through your mouth down to the bottom of your breath before taking the next breath. Repeat holding Large Intestine 4 on the opposite hand while performing deep, slow breathing three more times. Now you are ready to offer your horse help during an emergency. AUTUMN 2018

Acupressure for Colic Because colic is potentially fatal, performing a brief acupressure session while waiting for your veterinarian to arrive can help your horse. Though acupressure is not a substitute for veterinary care, there are acupoints known to relax the gastrointestinal tract and move toward balancing and restoring the natural internal activities of your horse’s bodily functions.

Acupressure Points for General Colic

After following any instructions your vet may have given over the phone and while waiting for the vet to see your horse, take a deep breath and continue to breathe evenly so that you are calm and confident. Also please remember to protect yourself if the horse is extremely anxious and violent. Your safety is important and do not attempt to offer acupressure. The horse needs to be relatively calm to benefit from an acupressure session. To perform the point work shown in the Acupressure for General Colic chart, see the hands-on instructions at the end of this article.

Acupressure Points for Emergencies

Acupressure for Emergency Situations In any emergency, you can help your horse remain as calm as possible as long as you are not at risk. The acupoints given in the “Acupressure for Emergencies” chart can help support the horse’s respiration and heart rate as well as reduce fear and enhance calm. These acupoints have been used for horses in emergency situations for thousands of years. See the hands-on instructions at the end of this article.

18 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

AUTUMN 2018

Hands-on Acupressure Session To perform point work, one hand performs the acupoint work while the other hand can rest comfortably on the horse to feel any reactions and to help ground the animal. Place the soft tip of your thumb on the acupoint indicated at about a 45-90 degree angle and press gently. If the horse exhibits any adverse reaction, stop pressing the point immediately. When your horse is calm, continue to the next acupoint. Stay on each acupoint for a slow count to 20, then move on to the next acupoint. Repeat this procedure on the opposite side of your horse. All of the acupoints shown in the General Colic and Acupressure for Emergencies charts are to be stimulated on both sides of the horse’s body. The possibility of colic and other injuries is always present. It‘s up to you to be prepared to handle what happens in the best way possible. Learning basic first aid and practicing the hands-on acupressure techniques are a good way to be ready because, unfortunately, horses tend to be so prone to emergencies.

A Matter of Trust Creating a deeper, lasting connection with your horse.

Jo Sheval Holistic Equitation Looking for a better way to be with horses has always been a driving force of mine. The motivation to keep searching has ultimately been driven by my herd and in particular two horses that I own, Bonnie and Raz. Bonnie has been my main riding horse and Raz is a pony that I bred that I am sure was a Zebra in his past life. So I will start with my beautiful Bonnie. I have hardly ridden Bonnie in the last 5 years as every time I thought or felt I had something new to offer her she would say to me, “That is not it”. I had been riding Bonnie for over a decade on trails as well as bareback and bridle-less. I had trained her using “natural horsemanship” methods for some years prior to stopping. Although I felt like I was soft and fair, I could feel in my heart she was not agreeing. It was not like she ever did anything ‘bad’: on the contrary. In trying so hard to understand what I wanted she was constantly anticipating and through this I could feel the emotional discomfort inside of her. At the same time that I gave up training Bonnie (2012) I had a foal born who I named Raz - short for Rasputin. Raz would become one of my most important teachers. I had bred and trained many horses over many decades so it wasn’t like I wasn’t handy on the ground with horses and foals. I was patient, I spent a lot of time hanging out in the herd building trust and relationship and I worked around the horses and ponies calmly and respectfully. However, none of the training methods I had gathered over a lifetime of being with horses worked for Raz. I observed him in the herd and noticed that the other horses, especially my stallion, put a lot of pressure on him as a foal. My stallion was a very good dad and excellent at reading and managing his herd. There was something quite different about Raz which made handling and training him challenging and sometimes quite frustrating, too.

James with one of the abused Gypsy Cobs in the UK using the Trust Technique

After several months of failed attempts to halter train him and no end of challenging emotions, I started to try something else altogether. I decided to try stillness and what I would later call “Ground Zero”. I would stand with him and empty my mind of everything - I was finding the present moment. It was only here that I was able to reach Raz. I noticed that any thought, good or bad, would cause him to leave me. I experimented with this way of being with Raz for many years. It was the only way I could catch him as he was highly reactive to movement, thought and emotions. I eventually got to where we could meditate together and he would often go into deep states of relaxation. However, once he was out again, he would revert back to his normal goofy self. Then in late 2014 someone shared a post of a guy in the UK called James French who, with his wife, had created the Trust Technique. I immediately fell in love with his connection with horses and I wanted to know more. Not long after that I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to put all things horsey aside to work on my own health. I could not stop thinking about the videos I had watched and the connection James was making with the horses. I knew in my heart that he had something heartfelt and beautiful and I wanted to know more. After taking some time out to heal naturally from breast cancer I revisited the Trust Technique and in 2017 joined up to their online course with my business partner Kailie. It was truly inspiring to see such a peaceful process with all animals, including domestic pets, lions and bears, which resulted in such amazing and lasting changes to their emotions and behaviour. I decided to contact James and Shelley and ask if we could host them in Australia. After many months of consultation they decided to run their “I have a dream” clinic with Holistic Equitation in Seville, Victoria in February 2018. Kailie and myself had 6 days with James and Shelley learning the Trust Technique and putting a deeper framework and process into our own work. The results were amazing.

AUTUMN 2018

I asked James if we could work with Bonnie. He agreed, but it meant I had to ride her like I had never ridden her before: bareback with no tools or tack in an open paddock and without any aid other than my mind. No seat, hands or legs, just my mind! I first had to clear my own mind, then both Kailie and James supported Bonnie and I through the Trust Technique process. I was at last riding Bonnie with nothing more than my thoughts! I was euphoric and I felt for the first time in my entire journey with her that she finally said, “You’ve got it”. It was as if she had been waiting for this, pushing me to this the entire time. Working with the Trust Technique brings the horses into a state of learning, opens up our communication and offers them a safe place to heal. Both Kailie and I are enrolled to become accredited Trust Technique practitioners, having worked in this genre of horse communication and training for many years.

We offer workshops around Australia using our own “Finding Stillness” practices with horses to bring about lasting changes with our horses, and in the process not only heal their blocked emotions and traumas, but our own. You can contact Jo or Kailie at www.holisticequitation.com.au or info@holisticequitation.com.au to run a workshop near you. James and Shelley will be back in Australia to run the “I have a dream” workshop in Jan/Feb 2018.

What is Craniosacral Therapy? Craniosacral therapy is a bodywork technique that addresses the craniosacral rhythm which is found in all animals. This rhythm is similar to the animal’s heartbeat, but is a result of the pumping of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) rather than blood through the heart. The CSF nourishes the Central Nervous System (CNS) and changes in its flow can directly impact it. CSF flows from the skull of the animal (cranium), down the spinal cord to the sacrum (hence the name craniosacral). Craniosacral therapists can enhance and correct the flow of CSF through specific techniques and protocols. History Dr. William Sutherland, an osteopathic physician who was fascinated by the structure and function of the bones of skull, founded Cranial Osteopathy in the early 20th century. He initially experimented on himself and found that he could influence his cranial rhythm (as well as cause or relieve illness) by putting specific pressure on certain cranial bones. In the 1970’s Dr. John Upledger, another osteopathic physician, expanded on Dr. Sutherland’s work after he became interested in cranial rhythm when he saw it first hand while assisting in an operation and noticing rhythmic movement of the patient’s spinal cord. Dr. Upledger was able to develop techniques to directly influence this rhythm and had the opportunity to research the craniosacral system while working at Michigan State University. He later created courses to teach others how to perform craniosacral technique and today the technique is practiced by thousands of practitioners all over the world.

Craniosacral Technique for Animals Numerous practitioners, including myself, began to practice the craniosacral techniques on animals and quickly realized that they 22 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

can benefit from it just as much as people can. Animals also have a craniosacral rhythm that can become altered due to injuries and stresses. Animals who receive regular bodywork (massage and chiropractic) and have pattern of re-occuring issues (won’t hold an adjustment, end up tight in the same areas shortly following a massage) can benefit from a combination of craniosacral therapy and other forms of bodywork. The craniosacral therapy will allow the animal to “unwind” the kinks and twists in their fascia that is caused from repeated stresses allowing their bodies to stay in alignment following a chiropractic adjustment or allowing the muscles and other soft tissues to remain less restricted longer following a massage.

Cranial Bone Alignment Similar to humans, animals have multiple bones that make up their skull. These bones are attached by sutures, which are a specialized joint that allow for very subtle movements so the bones can expand and contract with the CSF pumping. These bones can become jammed or misaligned. This can be a result of birthing (the animal’s skull can become compressed in the birth canal) or it can be the result of injury. Cranial bone alignment techniques allow the practitioner to AUTUMN 2018

make subtle movements in these bones which allow them to move more freely. This can help with anything from headaches and lack of concentration to decreased proprioception and attitude problems.

Learning More Practitioners who would like to add craniosacral therapy to their animal bodywork practice are welcome to enroll in our online certification course. This course covers a 10 step CS protocol, advanced techniques, cranial bone alignments and an energy healing technique.

OLYMPIC RIDERS AMAZED

AT REVOLUTIONARY AWARD WINNING BIT

ties can also cause horses to fight them and bulge their tongue back to escape the pain, resulting in displacement of the soft palate.

Champion and Olympic riders, trainers and coaches are raving about his latest invention the WTP (Winning Tongue Plate) bit the only bit in the world to win a prestigious Australian and international design award. There are two unique patented revolutionary designs the normal plate and extended plate both reducing bit pressure by about 85% with no pinching, and the Extended Plate is the only bit in the world proven to stop displacement of the soft palate and other breathing issues, all making the difference between winning and losing an event. Due to research and development, the new and improved 2013 designs has produced outstanding results in the equestrian and racing industry and has the industries talking. Hall of Fame Jockey Mike Smith, says it’s “the bit of the future.” Olympic rider Megan Jones “it is

Whereas the patented WTP encased joint design prevents the arms folding down, preventing pain to the roof, tongue and bars. The 6.5 square cm low profile center plate creates a softer surface area reducing the bit pressure by about 85%. The WTP center flat plate is up to 14mm lower than other bit joints, allowing more room between the tongue and the roof of the mouth, preventing roof rubbing and mouthing issues. Further, the WTP bit arms have limited travel to reduce outer ring pressure to the cheeks and lips when working a horse in a straight line. The only time cheek pressure is required is when turning your horse. The best test to demonstrate how it stops displacement is by laying two fingers flat on your tongue. The result, you can’t bulge your tongue back. Neither can the horse, therefore, keeping the tongue in the correct forward position and stopping displacement. The revolutionary plate design prevents the horse pushing the plate upwards or sideways.

amazing.” Used by champion and Olympic riders, Amanda Ross, Natalie Blundell, Tegan Fitzsimon, Peter McMahon, Katja Weimann, Paula Hamood, Dianne Jenkyn Dressage. The WTP bits transform horses that have poor bit contact and were leaning on the rein, pulling the reins through your hands, not using their shoulders or hindquarters, fighting the bit, head chucking, rearing, bucking, pulling. All of the WTP benefits are supported by hundreds of amazing testimonials which can be supplied on request.

24 DESIGNS TO SUIT ALL DISCIPLINES!

Here’s what is being said by other leading industry experts. Show jumping rider Janelle Waters, “Absolutely amazing. I have replaced all my bits.” Keli Rowe: “Your bit has stopped her bucking and rearing.” Rachel Jones: “He went from rearing and out of control to an angel winning 5 ribbons on the day!” Tara Brough: “He stopped fighting the bit and is now soft

PICTURES 1 & 2 SHOW A SNAFFLE BIT ROOF RUBBING AND BIT PINCHING. It is well documented jointed snaffle bits cause roof rubbing and bit pinching, causing pain signals to spread to any other branch of the same facial nerve, resulting in pain in areas of the face that have no direct contact with the bit, resulting in head shaking, pulling, rearing, bucking, mouth opening and poor performance. Exposed jointed snaffle bits create up to 300kg of pressure, pinching the tongue down to centimeters, causing horses to evade the pain by withdrawing the tongue or placing it over the bit. Tongue

and round totally amazing.” Iconic trainer Henry Moreno, “After 63 years, I have changed to these bits; they are the best bits I’ve ever put on a horse”. Leading colt breaker Julien Welsh, who breaks in 500 horses a year for Darley and other leading trainers purchased 25 WTP bits rating the normal plate design as the best bit on the market and like having power steering, kind and soft on horses and transforming difficult horses. Dave McEvoy, colt breaker and campdrafter, “totally amazing results!”

The wait is over to prevent and fix mouthing and breathing issues!

THE CHALLENGE RIDE AGAINST CANCER As a cancer survivor herself, blind Paralympian Sue-Ellen Lovett is riding through Central West NSW to raise money for a cause passionate to her heart Sue-Ellen’s goal for 2018 is to raise money for the new Integrated Wellness Centre to be located within the Oncology Department of Dubbo Base Hospital. The ride will be taking place between October 6, 2018 and October 21, 2018. The ride will take Sue-Ellen across the region, visiting the communities of Dubbo, Geurie, Wellington, Goolma, Mudgee, Gulgong, Dunedoo, Coolah, Binnaway, Mendooran, Gilgandra, Collie, Warren, Trangie and Narromine. The ride will cover more than 800kms, starting in Dubbo then travelling through Central West NSW and finishing at Dubbo Racecourse. Functions with entertainment and auctions will be held in each town. Sue-Ellen, riding trusty Australian Stock horses with her amazing guide dog Armani, will be guided by her vigilant sighted guides mounted on Australian Thoroughbred horses supplied by Racing NSW from their rehoming programme for ex-racehorses. She will add this to her previous nine long distance rides, having ridden in excess of 16,000kms and raising over 3.1 million dollars for worthy causes, reinforcing to all ,that being blind does not stop you from making a difference………….

About – Sue-Ellen Lovett From humble beginnings growing up on a farm near Mudgee, Sue-Ellen had visions of representing her country. She knew what she had to do, how to do it but had no idea it would take her on the journey she has travelled thus far. She has completed an incredible nine long-distance horse rides, covering 16,000km, raising a phenomenal $3.1 million for organisations such as Guide Dogs NSW, Sydney Paralympian Committee, Riding for the Disabled, Children’s Cancer Unit and Lions Save Sight.
