Allen Hicks, a horse trainer, took this photo of his retired cutting horse, Monkey, and his dog, Emma. They are best friends. Allen saw Emma on Channel 11 (TV) up for adoption, He knew Emma should be his dog, so he jumped in his truck and went down to the SPCA Shelter to get her. They said he was the first to see her but they wanted him to bring in his other dog to see if the two would get along. The other dog, Magnum (Doberman), was one of the best dogs ever! So, of course, they got along and Emma fell in love with him. Allen is a horse trainer but he taught Emma to ride horses in about two weeks. She was a natural!

how StressLess has helped them here: www.centerlinedistribution.net.

Now, StressLess can help our smaller four-legged family members, too.

How do I know if my horse could benefit from StressLess? StressLess helps keep your hot horse cool — even under stressful situations. Consider trying it if your horse is:

• Anxious

• Agitated

• Nervous

• Overreactive

• Without appetite

• Inconsistent

• Performing poorly

• Fearful

• Travels poorly

• Is difficult for vets

• Becomes stressed at competitions or clinics

Are there any side effects?

No. StressLess is safe for long-term and short-term use.

Will it make my horse sleepy or dull?

No. StressLess does not affect equine motor skills. It frees your horse to perform at his or her optimum level.

Is StressLess guaranteed to work?

Yes, we are so sure of the capabilities of StressLess Equine we have a 100% money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with the results.

Who uses StressLess?

Grand Prix dressage riders, trail riders, international show jumpers, 5-star eventers, OTTB trainers, rehab programs, world champion four-in-hand drivers, owners with horses on stall rest, natural horsemanship practitioners and horse lovers of all disciplines and levels. Read

And research shows they may need it more than ever. The largest-ever study on canine temperaments, published in Scientific Reports, evaluated nearly 14,000 dogs and showed that nearly three-quarters of them showed at least one anxiety-related behavior. And that was before the pandemic cranked up pet parents’ stress levels and wreaked havoc with dogs’ routines — both things that can affect pups’ peace of mind. “More pets are being treated for anxiety than in the past,” Leni Kaplan, DVM, a veterinarian at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine told the New York Times in November.

How do I know my dog is experiencing anxiety?

Dogs can show they are feeling stress and anxiety in different ways, and those can be different for individual dogs. Common symptoms include:

• Drooling

• Panting

• Destructive behavior, such as destroying furniture

• Excessive barking

• Pacing

• Restlessness

• Repetitive or compulsive behaviors

• Urinating or defecating in the house

• Running away in fear

• Cowering

• Excessive digging

• Lack of appetite

What causes anxiety in dogs?

Every dog is unique — that’s one of the reasons we love them. That also means that every dog processes stimuli differently. Something that sends one

dog hiding under the bed for hours may not even be noticed by another. Different breeds and different upbringing can also impact how a dog handles stress. Some common things that can stress dogs include:

• Visits to the vet clinic

• Visits to the groomer

• Boarding

• Thunder, fireworks and other loud noises

• Car rides

• Horseshows or other busy events where there is lots of activity — and lots of other unknown dogs

• Moving house

Some dogs may also experience stress when left alone. When this stress becomes extreme, it may lead to separation anxiety, similar to a panic attack. It’s estimated that from 14-20% of dogs suffer from separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety may excessively bark, dig, pant, chew (and destroy things) and urinate and defecate inside.

In addition to being left alone, age can be another common cause of canine anxiety. As some dogs grow older, a loss of cognitive, hearing and vision power can lead to an increase in anxiety.

The most common reason for anxiety in senior dogs is canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome, a condition often compared to Alzheimer’s disease in people.

Lots of things can cause anxiety in dogs. That’s why it’s important to visit your vet to rule out a physical cause, like pain or infection, that may the root of the problem.

How can StressLessK9 help with

my dog’s anxiety?

StressLessK9 can help restore dogs’ balanced mood, calm mind and increased focus. It may also make them more conducive to training and behavior modification.

Can you give me an example?

Here’s how StressLessK9 helped one canine customer mend a broken heart — and the anxiety that came with it: “When my older Rottweiler passed away, my two-year old Rottie, Kobe, was completely distraught, lost and depressed. He became extremely anxious if I left him alone even for the shortest time. And when I was with him he was not the happy and confident dog that he had been. After two weeks on StressLess, he was his old self. I discontinued giving it to him after a month and he has stayed like his old self, but even more calm, confident and mature. It was just what he needed to get over the loss of his older companion.

Also, he has always been stressed out by fireworks. Now I put him on StressLess a few days before I know that there will be fireworks (Memorial Day and the 4th of July) and he tolerates them much better now.”

Are there any side effects? No.

OSCAR’S PLACE, WHERE DONKEYS CAN LIVE THEIR LIVES IN COMFORT

Former Time Inc. Executive Ron King has joined LA Pop Art Dealer Phil Selway to rescue donkeys from slaughter, looking to rehabilitate and rehome the equines in Wine Country.

Oscar’s Place, a 501c3 non-profit foundation, is a donkey adoption center and sanctuary in Northern California Wine Country that provides a safe haven for abandoned and abused donkeys. It was founded by renowned LA Pop Art dealer and gallery owner Phil Selway last year after the pandemic began.

Oscar’s Place saves donkeys from auction houses where their fate is unknown and gives them a chance to live out their lives in love and comfort.

“Donkeys are so much more like pet dogs than farm livestock,” explains Ron King, Executive Director of Oscar’s Place and former Senior Vice President for the NYC-based media conglomerate Time Inc., “They crave human attention, form extremely strong bonds with other donkeys and their caretakers, and love to play with their donkey friends.”

The Selway Family Foundation is seeking to collaborate with animal rights influencers, donkey lovers, and people who care about animals to educate the public on donkeys and provide donations for the rescued equines on the ranch at this time.

“We are rescuing these poor animals, helping them recover physically and emotionally, and ultimately find their forever homes. Donkeys are in high demand both as pets and faithful herd protectors.” King said.

Oscar’s Place nurtures abused donkeys and aims to rebuild the animals’ trust

before introducing them to their new caretakers. The team at Oscar’s Place is committed to only adopting out donkeys that are ready both physically

and emotionally, thereby placing animal welfare above all. “It is important to us that these loving animals find an equally loving home,” King said.

INTERNAL PARASITE UPDATE

There are changes happening in the world of equine deworming. The days of random deworming every 2-4 months, on a pre-planned rotating schedule, is coming to an end. This plan of rotational deworming was developed almost fifty years ago at a time when it was common for horses to die of thromboembolic colic secondary to parasite infection. Prior to that plan, 90% of all colics were thought to be due, in part, to migrating larvae of large strongyles (a type of worm). This plan was in fact successful; large strongyles have been all but eradicated now and verminous colic is considered a rarity. However, true to form, equine parasites have risen to the challenge! Instead of heavy large strongyle populations, we now have heavy small strongyle loads. Even more seriously, widespread drug resistance is becoming evident in our equine population today. With no new equine dewormers currently in development, it is clear that we must carefully preserve the efficiency of the deworming drugs we have available to us.

Internal parasites are common in all horses, and horses with parasites will shed eggs in their feces, these eggs are in turn ingested by grazing horses. The eggs go through larval stages inside the horses intestinal tract, resulting in mature worms to shed more eggs onto the pasture. Thus, the cycle continues. Research has shown that horses have a genetically programmed ability to be immune to heavy parasite loads. About one half of the horse population

are resistant to carrying parasites. But, some have poor immunity to parasites and subsequently shed large numbers of parasite eggs in their manure. To say it another way, 20-30% of the horses are responsible for about 80% of the parasite eggs in the environment.

Because all horses handle their parasite loads differently due to their individual immunity status, it is prudent to categorize them as such. By performing a “fecal egg count” test or FEC, on horses 3 years of age and older, we can clarify them as low, medium, or high egg shedders. We can then plan specific deworming protocols to each category. Although the FEC is a pretty accurate test, there can be some variability, because eggs are shed at variable rates throughout the day and do not always correlate with the exact number of worms inside of the horse.

We can negate this variability, by the use of shedding categories. About 15% of the horse population will alternate categories because of their genetic immunity which has many variables. The FEC test should be done 1-2 times yearly to keep the

Deworming

category up to date.

The timing of an FEC test is important with regards to recent deworming. Each dewormer has a specific period of time when no eggs should be seen in the manure because of the effectiveness of the drug. This is called specific egg

reappearance period or ERP. A FEC run prior ro the end of the ERP for each drug used, will have inaccurate results. We want to be sure tests are run at specific times after deworming for proper accuracy. Below are the minimum wait periods for taking samples after deworming.

Benzemidazole (Fenbendazole,Oxibendazole) Test 6 WEEKS after dewormer is given Ivermectin (Zimectrin,Eqvalan) Test 8 WEEKS after dewormer is given Moxidectin (Quest) Test 12 WEEKS after dewormer is given

To collect samples, place two frest fecal balls from the center of a manure pile into a clean ziplock bag, squeeze the air out, sea and keep refridgerated until test can be run.

Deworming and fecal egg counts are important parts to a quality parasite control program, but they must be used in conjunction with good management practices. These include removing manure from stalls or pipe corrals daily, not overstocking turn-outs and pastures, not mixing young and old horses together. Running the FEC tests in April and October will help in effectively managing the worm burdens. Talk to your veterinarian about doing

fecal egg counts and determining your horses egg shedding status. With that information you and your veterinarian can customize a deworming program to fit your personal situation.

EVERY DAY IS AN EMERGENCY FOR A HOMELESS ANIMAL

Eileen Smulson is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer and her husband, Brad is the Director of Operations of their animal welfare nonprofit Operation Blankets of Love (OBOL).

OBOL will be celebrating its 16th year in January 2023. Their mission has been to improve the health of homeless animals and increase their chances for survival. Annually they reach more than 12,000 homeless animals to provide what they need to become healthier and stronger so they can be adopted into a forever loving home.

OBOL Rescues the Rescuers in California, throughout the U.S., Mexico, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Belize

Today the organization helps animal welfare organizations in myriad ways. To date, OBOL has donated to 104 animal shelters, 880 rescue organizations, 18,000 pets of the homeless, four pet pantries, several wildlife and farm sanctuaries. They provide at no cost pet food, dog beds, towels, collars, leashes, harnesses, bowls, toys, litter, flea medications, crates, grooming items, and other pet supplies.

OBOL donates mostly to dog and cat rescues. BUT sometimes they get items such as different animal pet food, toys, aquariums, hay, and dog igloos. They donate to wolfdog, fox, coyote, rabbit, pig, racoon and even reptile rescue groups.

A rescuer says, “What would rescuers and rescues do without endless support from OBOL? My heart overflows with love for this organization! I picked up food, leashes, some comfy beds, and plenty of snacks today!”

Helping the Pets of the Homeless, Veterans and

Struggling Families with Pets

When pets are allowed to stay with their loving, human companions, they stay out of shelters with high euthanasia rates. To aid this, OBOL donates food, blankets, pet beds, leashes, collars, harnesses, toys, pet clothes, and other critical supplies to homeless pet owners, low-income seniors, and homebound people with pets.

No person should have their pets taken away because they can’t afford the necessary supplies for their pets’ survival. No pets should go hungry, be uncomfortable, or suffer.

Teaching children how to be kind and respectful to animals

Humane education also teaches empathy, compassion, responsibility, anti-bullying, and teamwork. By incorporating these values into our lessons, we can end animal abuse and prevent pets from ending up in shelters. OBOL’s innovative, solutions-driven

humane education program HELP is one of the only humane education programs in California.

When you make a financial donation, it saves the lives of homeless animals

Eileen says, “OBOL provides critical supplies for the dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, pregnant mamas that are found wandering in the streets, dumped in agricultural fields, and even roaming endlessly on the freeway! They have not had food for days, broken bones, sick, full of ticks and fleas. Some are so close to death. So please consider making a donation so they can find a forever home.”

Please see their website at OBOL.info to make a financial gift and for drop-off locations where you can donate pet food and other pet supplies. For more information contact Eileen Smulson at 818-402-6586. Their email is obol@obol.info

REAL CONNECTIONS WITH HORSES BRING REAL CHANGE TO HUMANS

The bond that is established when a human truly connects with a horse creates new pathways for problemsolving and social interaction through experiences that promote transformative behavioral shifts and introspective opportunities for personal growth.

Providing access to the inspiring and restorative power of interacting with horses is the primary goal of sessions designed by Kasia Roether and Jutta Thoerner, two Master Facilitators of Equus Coaching from the local non-profit organization Life Coaching With Horses.

Due to their sensitivity to the environment around them, horses offer non-judgmental feedback to the participants guided in activities leading to self-discovery and reconnection with personal potential. During meaningful interactions, horses facilitate each participant’s personal development leading to increased confidence, better communication skills and selfempowerment. Individuals or groups learn to be more aware of patterns of behavior affecting decision-making, how to identify and remove internal roadblocks, and utilizing strategies for improving the quality of relationships.

Most events are held in the natural pastures and serene oak woodlands of Nacimiento Ranch, which offers clients a peaceful, private setting conducive to relaxation and a general sense of wellbeing.  Participants engage in unique, playful, positive, safe and on-the-ground experiences with friendly horses.

Staff and volunteers from community service organizations, members of the military and law enforcement agencies, medical and mental health professionals, firefighters, and care providers are welcome to access rejuvenating and inspiring equine experiences in this environment free of charge.

After experiencing equine-assisted activities, many shared how they were affected:

“... thanks so much for giving me the opportunity for a most fulfilling and uplifting experience. What I got out of this was way more than I expected and opened my eyes to a whole new world of understanding, connecting, thinking, and appreciating many aspects of life, who we touch and who touches us, not to mention how much of this comes from these magnificent animals. I left with a feeling of comfort, joy, peace and so much more knowledge about horses than I ever imagined.

Coming from zero exposure to these creatures, that says a lot. I can’t say enough about the great job Kasia, Jutta, and their team do in putting together this very meaningful and thoughtful experience. It is clear this is a labor of love for them.”

—Karina Bain-Krueger,l Hospice SLO

“Our Leadership Team thoroughly enjoyed the Equine Experience. As a newer team created out of a merger, we were seeking an opportunity to strengthen our bonds and build trust. Not only did we achieve both of those goals, but we also greatly benefited from the healing powers of being outside in nature with each other and with the horses.

Kasia, Jutta, and their entire team were professional, accessible, and created a safe environment, both physically and emotionally. I would highly recommend the Equine Experience to any team in need of connection, rejuvenation, or just good old-fashioned fun!”

“This experience was a huge success for our team. We each came to the program with different intentions and expectations. Some had hesitations, some were excited, while others simply remained open - but we all walked away changed. Kasia and Jutta guided the experience so elegantly and created an interactive learning experience that was safe both emotionally and physically. The horses were lovely and brought so much joy and healing with just

their mere presence. This was a much needed space and time for our team. We can’t thank Life Coaching with Horses enough!”

“I loved spending time with the horses... just grooming and hanging with them; I would have done that all day!! Thank you all so much! It was such a special experience! Very comfortable in every way. You guys made it an ideal experience. It was so lovely. From the shady area to the snacks, the leaders, the horses, to our lunch area. Thank you!!”

The Life Coaching With Horses team is committed to fulfilling its mission of working with horses and nature to provide support and give back to those who serve our community.

The availability of these unique services to the community depends on donations. Cash or checks made out to Life Coaching with Horses 501 (c)(3) are accepted during the events or via mail. THE CHALLENGE OF SUPPORTING ANIMALS WITH THEIR TRANSITION

I have two important stories I want to share with you. Both involve a beloved animal and their earlier than expected transition.

The transition for my horse, Red

The first story is about my horse Red and our experience. Red was a big and beautiful chestnut horse who was an amazing teacher and guide. When I first got him, he was big, strong and an amazing jumper. He knew what to do! The first year was great, but then problems started. I fell off many times and couldn’t figure out what was wrong. It turns out he had a broken shoulder blade. Once that healed, we got back to work and then he had a torn suspensory. He had surgery and everything to help him heal. He never quite got back on track. During all this time, I actually started my energy medicine journey and he became my muse and guinea pig. I practiced everything on him, and he loved it. I was at the point of deciding if I should retire him since he just wasn’t healing, when the unthinkable happened. I went out to the barn on a Sunday to ride him, and he just didn’t feel right. As I was riding him, I noticed two hawks circling over us in the arena. I thought, that is odd and very ominous. Sure enough, I then noticed that his sides were tight as a drum. I immediately got off and tried to feed him some bran mash and made that dreaded call to the Vet to come out ASAP. While I was waiting for the Vet, I started to feel panic and dread. I was trying to walk him around and I was sure he was colicking. Trying to keep a 1200 pound horse moving when they would rather roll or lie down was the hardest thing to do. Now Red had colicked several times before, but it was always minor. When the Vet got there, he

immediately put him on an IV to hydrate him. Several hours later the Vet returned and checked Red, looked at me and said we have to have THAT conversation. I was shocked and just plain in disbelief. We decided doing surgery was not a good option, so then we had to discuss putting him down. I needed some time to think and to connect with Red to see his thoughts and wishes. With a friend to support my complex experience of intuition and emotion, I checked in with him, and he told us that he was ready to go and had actually picked this time. He felt he had taught me all I needed to know, and he felt he could be of better assistance to me from the other side. He was so appreciative of all I had done for him and he was forever grateful. I hung with him all day, doing energy sessions on him throughout the day until my husband could get there and it was time. The Vet kept telling me it could be ugly and that a horse could fight at the end. The heartfelt yet amazing thing to me, was when it was time, we had to walk up a small hill to get to the place where it would happen. Red practically ran up that hill, knowing it was time. They gave him the first injection and he went down easily and smoothly. Then with the last shot Red left his body easily and quickly without any resistance. I hesitate to say it was a beautiful passing and transition, yet I was grateful to be with him until his last breath. He has kept his word and is now one of my animal guides helping me

in my sessions with other animals.

This experience gave me a new insight into how important it is to connect and talk with your animal companion to help you both handle their transition with ease, grace and love. They know how hard it is for you to make that dreaded decision of when they go, and honor and respect your decisions. They love you unconditionally and are supporting you through the process.

My client’s beloved dog

The second story I can share is about a beloved dog who was involved in a freak accident that caused him to transition almost immediately. The owners were

shocked and devastated and wanted some relief and answers. I did a session on the Mom, and was able to help relieve her pain, guilt, shock and sadness. I was able to connect with her dog in Spirit and convey the message and love he had for her. She felt much relief and changed in mood so much so that her husband noticed and wanted that relief as well. Being able to connect with their dog after his passing and knowing that he is still with them in Spirit was such a comfort and helped in their healing.

Understanding your role in your animal’s life purpose

These experiences lead me to how much our animals are mirrors or reflections of what we are experiencing and why, or what types of Contracts they have with us to help us all fulfill agreements

– Emotional, Physical, Karmic, Unconscious and Pinnacle Agreements. My new program Chiron Mirror Sessions – Tandem Healing for You and Your Pet are a great way to learn more about the connection with your animal, why they are with you at this time, and how to heal you both, whether they stay or leave this earthly plane.

Some of the hardest sessions I do with my animal clients are when they have taken a downward turn health-wise, or they have had some form of tragic accident. It usually happens fast and suddenly, and we are never prepared. It hurts so much, as we are so attached and not ready to let them go.

I am here to tell you that our animals have a much different outlook than people. They came in to be with you for a specific reason – often to support you emotionally, physically, or with other agreements, perhaps to experience another life with you that heals their past or yours, and always to teach you and learn from you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2023 is off to a good start. If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home this year, you may have questions about what’s happening with the real estate market today. Experts don’t expect prices to come crashing down, but the level of home price moderation will depend on factors like mortgage rates and supply and demand in each local market.

What’s Ahead for Mortgage Rates in 2023?

Moving forward, experts agree it’s still going to be all about inflation. If inflation is high, mortgage rates will

be as well. But if inflation continues to fall, mortgage rates will likely respond. While there may be early signs inflation is easing as we round out this year, we’re not out of the woods just yet. Inflation is still something to watch in 2023.

Right now, experts are factoring all of this into their mortgage rate forecasts for 2023. And if we average those forecasts together, experts say we can expect rates to stabilize a bit more in 2023. Whether that’s between 5.5% and 6.5%, it’s hard for experts to say exactly where they’ll land. What everyone really wants is more stability in the market in 2023. For that to happen we’ll need to see the

Fed bring inflation down even more and keep it there.

What Will Happen to Home Prices in 2023?

Homes prices will always be defined by supply and demand. The more buyers and fewer homes there are on the market, the more home prices will rise. And that’s exactly what we saw during the pandemic.

But in 2022, things changed. We saw home prices moderate and housing supply grow as buyer demand pulled back due to higher mortgage rates. The level of moderation has varied by

local area – with the biggest changes happening in overheated markets. But do experts think that will continue? The truth is, we’ll likely see relatively flat or neutral appreciation in 2023.

What Does This Mean for You?

The best way to get the answers you need is to lean on a local real estate advisor. They’ll be able to explain the latest trends in your specific market so you can make a confident and informed decision on your next step toward buying or selling a home.

CBD: A GAME-CHANGER FOR EQUINE HEALTH

How were things before?

While most equine owners have heard of the benefits of CBD for people, dogs, and cats, few are familiar with its use in equines. One of the biggest reasons for that is because it used to be off-limits for equines in California.

Previously, the CDFA had classified equines as livestock, and said that as a result, CBD for equines was not allowed to be sold in California. Unfortunately, this prevented equines in California from having access to the benefits of CBD that other pets and people have come to rely on.

What’s New?

In 2021, California passed Assembly Bill 45, which allows hemp-derived CBD to be added to pet food. Of key importance is that the bill uses the definition of “livestock” found in California Business and Professions Code Section 4825.1, which states that equines are not considered livestock, but are instead considered pets, or companion animals.

This is great news for equine owners in California! It means that hemp-derived CBD is no longer off-limits for equines

in California, and equines around the state can finally benefit from CBD.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a natural component of the hemp plant. Hemp is a type of cannabis plant with very low amounts of THC. Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t cause a “high” in any amount.

Over the past decade, CBD has exploded in popularity because of its remarkable safety profile and multiple potential benefits, backed by an increasing number of clinical studies in both humans and animals at world-renowned universities.

What Does CBD Do?

So how can CBD help equines? There are two major benefits we’ve seen in our work with multiple equine rescues around the country.

CBD can help provide

Joint and mobility support

• Calming

support

“We have been using the CBD on two mares that were very stall sour and not friendly with the neighboring horse and it has had amazing results with them!!”

- Free Reign Equine Rescue

“Rusty, Louie, and Mito are just a few of the horses at RVR that are benefiting from this amazing product. It has made a tremendous difference in their lives. We highly recommend this product and will continue to use it on our rescue horses that can benefit from it.”

- RVR Horse Rescue

We’ve also seen these benefits in many other species, including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and rats. In fact, a zoo that we work with has seen benefits in a hyena, toucan, owl, and even an electric eel!

In dogs and cats, a lot of pet owners use CBD to help support normal brain function, and normal GI function, in addition to using CBD to help provide joint and mobility support, and calming support.

What We Do

Since 2015, we’ve been creating CBD products for animals and have found tremendous benefits in multiple species, including dogs, cats, and equines. We are veterinarian founded, formulated, and operated by Dr. Tim Shu. Dr. Shu has lectured around the world on cannabis, hemp, and CBD and their use in pets and veterinary medicine.

Our team consists of multiple veterinary professionals with over 60 years of combined experience in

veterinary medicine.

We know that CBD is new for many pet owners, that’s why our customer support team is led by a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with years of experience in cannabis and hemp. We’re here to provide you with the support you need, and to answer any questions you may have.

Quality

Quality is of utmost importance to us. Dr. Shu selects and reviews each batch of CBD extract we use to formulate our products. We are certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) and test all our products thoroughly using licensed labs to ensure quality and safety.

A SENIOR CITIZEN EVENTER? NO WAY!

my next treasure and as I write this I am starring at him in my backyard. Bought at the age of five we just celebrated his 20th birthday this past June.

Vinny and I did very well in the Hunter/ Equitation show ring but a bit of Navicular side lined that and we entered the world of dressage. We continued to do well with many championships at the training level.

My first memory as a tot growing up in Cleveland, Ohio was about my love for horses. I had a horse collection as a little girl and I would play all afternoon with them. They were numbered and named and I kept this very vital info in an index card box. I went out to the country twice a week to go riding and was a very happy, self-entertained kid whose world revolved around horses.

Finally at 18 (1972) my mom said… ”enough with the horses, it’s time to go to college and get a career”. So that was that and off I went to Boston for school and then worked in the entertainment industry for a few decades.

Fade out/fade in to 2000 and my move from LA to Santa Barbara. Horses had not been in my life for a very long time as I was busy being wife, mother and career woman and I didn’t think they would ever be again. However, one day while strolling down to the beach, I saw a sign allowing horses to ride there during certain hours. Like the intensity of a Star War’s lightsaber I could envision that yummy coat and special horsey smell just like old times.

Soon I was back cuddling with the horses. My first purchase was a lovely Arab mare then moving to the world of Hunter/ Equitation with my thoroughbred Johnny and then my Quarter horse Scout’s Honor. Horse trailers, horse shows, bridles, saddles, lessons, ribbons, etc.… and the addiction grows!

One fateful day in 2007 a stunning Dutch Warmblood came trotting into the arena at a barn I was with in Summerland. I was hit with a thunderbolt. Vinny was

June of 2022 I was getting bored with dressage but I kept telling myself that when Vinny retires I’ll retire as we were the same age. Ah….no such luck. The yearning for the jumping arena had awakened from a very long hibernation and was beckoning me to return.

Enter Allyson Hartenburg and Hartenburg Equestrian. My husband and I host a number of dressage schooling shows at the Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center and Allyson’s barn has attended frequently. I found Allyson to be a superior and very approachable trainer. I told her of my recurring dream (or was it a nightmare?) of returning to the jumping arena and did she have a large pony I could ride as I was now 68 and wanted to be closer to the ground plus I had a hip replacement surgery this past April. Taking care of me was of utmost importance.

She had a wonderful mare name Ashoka Coco Belle and so I came out one day to meet her and hop a few jumps. Oh boy…the addiction was back stronger than ever. Was there a horses/pony anonymous meeting somewhere in town I could attend?

Here I was at a 3 day eventing barn and I always thought of eventing as hell bent horses instead of motorcycles and definitely not a sport for a tiny, elderly gal. But, I’m a gutsy tiny, elderly gal and this pony (belonging to the wonderful Shenstone family) knew what she was doing and going to take care of me. The goal was for me to do my first 3 day event in 6 weeks!

So I forged ahead with cross country clinics, lessons and ultimately (drum roll

The next day was show jumping and we were double clear again and ended the weekend in fourth place (out of 16 competitors) and my team garnered a first! I couldn’t help repeating...”I can’t believe I did this”. Years before I had attended awards dinners, premieres, pilot shootings and everything else bedazzling, but completing my first 3 day event trumps anything Hollywood had to offer.

please) my first 3 day event at Shepherd Ranch at the end of August this year.

Our dressage test went well other than a wrong canter lead for a split second. That afternoon I was the last to ride my cross country course and after walking it a dozen times I wondered what the “f” was I doing??

At 5:50 on Saturday I was ready and waiting for my countdown. And off we went. With the wind in my face and this sweet pony’s head bobbing up and down in front of me I jumped all 14 fences with a double clear! I crossed the finish line and burst into tears. Everyone was

yelling “Go Carole”…even the announcer said it over the loud speaker and added that this was my first 3 day event. My barn embraced me as If I was Amelia Earhart coming back from a solo flight or an academy award dark horse winner, truly the icing on the cake, or should I say the icing on the jumps.

I cried, I barfed, I snuck a cigarette or two and felt blessed beyond imagination that at my age I could compete like this and do well. I have the most amazing trainers and truly dear friends to encourage me. My cup runneth over (with bills…no, that’s not right. Though true that is not in the spirit of this article) with so much gratitude and excitement that as Captain Kirk says “And the adventure continues”!

Last Saturday I called you regarding my horse showing signs of colic. Years ago my husband bought a bottle of Equine Colic Relief. I called you to see if I could still use it. I gave it to my horse “Chief” at 8 AM, he had minimal bowel sounds, was trying to roll on the ground several times, would not eat or drink. At 4:45 PM he urinated and moved his bowels with fairly good bowel sounds and the next day he had good bowel sounds and was given Bermuda hay. Thank you for making such a great product. It saved me hundreds of dollars in vet bills. I highly recommend this product and will let my equine friends know about it.. — Joan B, Tucson AZ

I've been using and trusting Equine Colic Relief for years; I never have less than 1 bottle in my barn repertoire. Again, I'm here to reorder. Yesterday, I came home and found my big beautiful mare having a tummy ache. I gave her the Equine Colic Relief, watched her and within the 45 minutes she was back to normal. I have never (crossed my fingers) had Equine Colic Relief fail me. I've used it on my minis. The stuff works, and the equines love the taste. — Tracy B. AZ
