CONTINUING A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE IN HORSEMANSHIP

Since the passing of its founding icon, Sheila Varian, over three years ago, Varian Arabians has demonstrated its deep rooted ability to carve a new chapter for the historic farm, largely due to its foundational principles that are esteemed as much now as ever before. In this sense, Varian Arabians is truly timeless. And so are its principles… aptly dubbed “The Varian Way.”

It represents a lifestyle, an homage to those before us, a set of horsemanship skills that are as much as about us as they are about the horses we ride. Like Tom Dorrance – the wise equine revolutionary who tutored his young pupil, Sheila Varian, in the quiet language of horses –Sheila’s principles are a way of life as well. It combines a love for the land, a loyalty to tradition steeped in Vaquero heritage, a soft approach to horsemanship, and a hands-on methodology that challenges our own humanity as much as our horses.

Services offered by Varian Arabians include breeding, foaling, boarding, and training The Varian Way led by head handler, Mike Perez.

One of the farm’s most beloved opportunities is the Sheila Varian Museum, a labor of love by general manager Angela Alvarez that opened in August 2016 and has since welcomed visitors from around the world. The Museum transforms Sheila’s office areas and personal living room peeking into the intricacies of the legendary cowgirl – both as a human being and as legendary horse woman.

Breeding remains a cornerstone in the Varian Arabians program. Standing alongside the Desperado V son, Windy Bey V, is the heir apparent to the royal throne of Varian Arabians stallions: Major Mac V. There was no doubt in Sheila’s mind that he represented the perfect, grand culmination of six

generations of breeding. Now with three foal crops on the ground, he is already an international superstar, embodying the best of his paternal ancestors, particularly Huckleberry Bey++. Major Mac V’s stage debut was most certainly in the short film, “The First of Many,” an Equus Film Festival award winner in 2016, based on his first ride in the hills of California with Lester Buckley at the request of Sheila one week before she passed away. The film luminously encapsulates the wonders of the horse/ human connection in the rawest, most organic way that leaves no viewer unmoved or untouched.

In continuing with its tradition of educational excellence, Varian Arabians lends its facilities to hand-selected

clinicians of the highest level, providing solid horsemanship education from the ground up. This year’s clinician topics include: Groundwork, horse-to-human

communication, advancing lines to liberty, confidence building for horse/ human teams, western dressage, and more.

Guests will enjoy all that the beautiful farm has to offer, from its flowerladen, exquisite grounds to the rich and abundant history hinting at every bend. No better example is the famous Varian Arabians History Wall. This favorite experience turns the inside wall of the illustrious show barn into a 225-foot immersive walk through history, as visitors journey through

photos, memorabilia and other artifacts alongside Sheila, general manager Angela Alvarez, and all its famous equine residences since the inception of the farm.

WHAT TO THINK ABOUT IF YOU TRULY CARE

As director of a no kill canine rescue for some 20 years I am always astounded at how few people are aware of the daunting issues or understand the uphill battles we continue to fight in 2023. How few recognize the numbers of healthy socialized animals destroyed in a progressive state like California and worse, how it isn’t improving.

The economics are astounding as well. State and county funds are poorly spent impounding huge numbers of dogs and then vaccinating, housing and supervising these animals. And then, after all that, euthanizing said dogs because there are just too many. Pounds hold off spaying and neutering until a commitment is made which only goes to show how luck is rarely on the side of the impounded animal.

Yet, decade after decade no one seems to come up with viable solutions. It certainly isn’t very sexy to continually publicize the facts and tragic statistics so that never happens. How hard would it be to establish free or truly low cost spay neuter clinics in every county and several in every big city, staffing those clinics with vets trained in low cost sterilizations so the wait times are not months out. Sterilization doesn’t make for great press like “one dog at a time” adoptions or “no kill LA” (a pipe dream) yet there is a serious need for it and once clinics are set up, there will be no lack of clients. Meade Canine rescue and sanctuary in Creston, California has been sponsoring free spay and neuter clinics in Mexico for several years now and guess what? Veterinarians are seeing a difference in the dog and cat

population; we can proudly say we ARE making a difference. But that is with the help of the Mexican government and the veterinarian association allowing us to sterilize as many as 350 dogs and cats in a day and continue to do so on a monthly basis, which works! Can it happen in California? Doesn’t seem so sadly for many reasons so nothing gets done and animals continue to clog the many huge pounds all over the state- and thousands of adoptable shelter dogs end up euthanized every month.

So why not enact a nationwide ban on all advertising of dogs bred for sale? A ban that could be readily enforced, no ‘field’ people needed. If so called ‘breeders’ can’t advertise they have no market. Thousands of internet ads make it much too easy for irresponsible people to buy dogs, avoiding the need to (heaven forbid) visit local shelters and pounds or contact rescues insuring they will adopt a sterilized dog. Dogs purchased on line are more often than not, not spayed and neutered and no attempt is made to insure they ever are, adding to the huge problems. If you google any breed or breed mix, you should be stunned at the sheer number of “for sale” ads pop up for that animal. Armchair ordering of dogs for sale from irreputable people in it for the money while terrific dogs and puppies languish in dog pounds until they are destroyed due to overpopulation

seems a horrible thing to have happen in a country where people spend billions on everything from dog costumes to doggie diapers.

Until something changes, aka the banning of ads and also implementing clinics for truly low cost or free sterilizations throughout California, networkers and rescuers who work so hard to save even a fraction of the thousands of dogs in danger will continue to shake their heads at the ignorance of a public who says it cares.

Meade Canine rescue and sanctuary in Creston, California has been sponsoring free spay and neuter clinics in Mexico for several years now and guess what? Veterinarians are seeing a difference in the dog and cat population; we can proudly say we ARE making a difference. Sadly not in California

All of us in the ‘trenches’ know the futility of saving one dog at a time because we never forget all the ones left behind and as we continue to try to make a difference we know we really aren’t. It makes rescue work Sisyphean and about as uplifting as that rock being pushed uphill.

CANINE ANGELS 8  EQUINE AND CANINE NEWS

Every ranch talks about Champion bloodlines and blue ribbons. We have our fair share of both but what makes D Ranch so special is the combination of all the pieces needed to make a great Peruvian Horse, whether it's for show or enjoying out on the trail.

We start with excellent individuals from proven bloodlines. We add patient, gentle handling from the very start and impeccable training in the saddle. Our horses are exposed to a wide variety of experiences: they don't just go around and around an arena. They are taken through obstacle courses, ridden on the trail and whatever else our trainer, Tony Botello, thinks of. To him, consistency and experience make all the difference.

Our young horses are trailer trained before they are saddle trained. Saddle training does not begin until they are 3 years old. They are trained for shows, trail and pleasure riding. If you want a Champion, we certainly have those. But if you’re looking for more and want a horse that’s the complete package - bloodlines, beauty, strength, brio, gait and training, you definitely must come for a visit to D Ranch.

Home of strong, smooth, impeccably trained Peruvian Horses. Contact us to visit our ranch in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley!

PRODUCT PREVIEW

BEE COMES UP AND ASKS FOR IT

Ask any horse owner and they will tell you that one of the most annoying seasons of all is fly season. Fly season arrives any time after March and marches on until the winter.

One moment the horses are quiet and peaceful and the next they are swatting, swishing, and stomping around because flies are getting ready to feed, breed, and transmit disease.

Flies have always been a great nemesis of horse owners around the world and it’s sad to say, but they aren’t going away any time soon. And, while they continue to flourish consider how fast they can grow and what harm they might bring to your horses including horseflies.

• Thriving in warm, moist environments.

• Having been known to fly 30 miles to find their meal.

• Bite! And it is the female flies that the horses need to watch out for.

• Transferring life-threatening diseases.

There has never been an easy way to repel flies. Until now!

Meet Michele Navarro

Michele grew up with horses, worked as a veterinary technician, and is also the owner of a small family ranch in Gilroy,

California, where she boards, feeds, rescues horses of all different breeds. Her ranch is also home to ponies, goats, pigs, donkeys, chickens, ducks, dogs, an emu, the ranch mascot--- who is an amazingly friendly Brahma Bull named, “Cow-Cow”, and the numerous flies who have found their way to her ranch…

And because of Michele’s love for animals she decided to create a product that would stop the flies from bugging them and that is when Michele created, STOP BUGG’N.

STOP BUGG’N is the first organic, 100% non-chemical, natural fly repellent that contains no toxic pesticides, that truly WORKS!!!

STOP BUGG’N has a proprietary

mixture of essential oils in an organic base. Her fly protection equine spray creates a zone of repellency against flies, mosquitoes, gnats and ticks. Her four-legged customers simply love it. And it smells good too!

Meet Bee

Bee is about 25 years old and has been out roaming in her pasture for nearly 10 years, and she is extremely sensitive to a single fly bite. She breaks out in sores from the flies and is allergic to many chemical fly sprays which also cause sores almost burns to her skin. It wasn’t until 2014, when Michele created STOP BUGG’N, when Bee was finally able to enjoy fly season without contracting a

Highest Quality Ingredients

terrible rash. Now every morning, Bee comes up to Michele and she asks for it! One thorough spray in the morning and Bee is good to go for the day.

Then there’s Sophie

Sophie is a donkey whose legs are very attractive to flies which have caused them to become bloody and raw. However, you cannot get near her with a spray bottle. So, Michele came up with the fly stick. Sophie, like Bee, comes up

and stands quietly to have it rubbed on her legs which are now no longer hairless and raw, but beautiful shaggy donkey legs.

STOP BUGG’N is now being sold all over the country as an organic alternative to toxic pesticide fly sprays and if you are a subscriber to the Cavali Club, you will soon be treated to a sample size bottles of STOP BUGG’N that will be delivered to horse lovers all around the country.

The Best For Your Best Friend

Equine Colic Relief

Be Prepared When Colic Strikes! Colic won’t wait and neither should you!

If you have lost a horse to Colic you know how hard it is to forget. Whether your horse is prone to colic or not, NO HORSE IS IMMUNE TO COLIC. Avoid hours of waiting for vet to arrive not to mention the expense. Colic is your horse's worst enemy, don't wait!

Last Saturday I called you regarding my horse showing signs of colic. Years ago my husband bought a bottle of Equine Colic Relief. I called you to see if I could still use it. I gave it to my horse “Chief” at 8 AM, he had minimal bowel sounds, was trying to roll on the ground several times, would not eat or drink. At 4:45 PM he urinated and moved his bowels with fairly good bowel sounds and the next day he had good bowel sounds and was given Bermuda hay. Thank you for making such a great product. It saved me hundreds of dollars in vet bills. I highly recommend this product and will let my equine friends know about it.. — Joan B, Tucson AZ

I've been using and trusting Equine Colic Relief for years; I never have less than 1 bottle in my barn repertoire. Again, I'm here to reorder. Yesterday, I came home and found my big beautiful mare having a tummy ache. I gave her the Equine Colic Relief, watched her and within the 45 minutes she was back to normal. I have never (crossed my fingers) had Equine Colic Relief fail me. I've used it on my minis. The stuff works, and the equines love the taste. — Tracy B. AZ

THE SECRET TO YOUR ANIMAL’S LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE

For anyone who has taken an animal into their life, big or small, the one desire we all have is for that animal to have a long and healthy life. We will do anything to keep them with us, especially if you have a horse that is more a partner than a pet. That also includes your ever-faithful dog or cat companion. Your animals can even be many times more important to you than your human family— especially if you are on your own— as they are there for you emotionally and physically in ways that people can’t be.

They love you unconditionally; they will be there for you when you need them; they listen to you; they are your best friend and confidante; they help heal you when you are sick or alone; they never say ‘no’ and will do whatever you ask of them; they can be your soulmate. No wonder we don’t want them to leave or have any health issues!

So how do you give them the best life possible and keep them healthy for a long life? I am Carolyn Osborn, Energy Intuitive of Chiron Energy Medicine and I want to share the story of our family dog Fiji, a 15 ½ yr. old black lab. We have had him since he was five when we rescued him. As an energy medicine practitioner and animal communicator, I wanted to give him the best, going beyond the normal care most animals receive. This has allowed him to exceed the traditional Labrador’s lifespan.

So, what does ‘the best’ consist of you ask? With any good health regimen, there are many different components, and many members of their health team to keep a beloved animal at his or her best. The ones most often utilized are your regular veterinarian, and maybe a chiropractor or acupuncturist. These

members are a very important part of the team, but there are other modalities that can fill out the team to assist in an even more complete picture of their health. Giving your pet a better diet, maybe raw or more natural is a good place to start. Also using a good animal communicator can help solve a lot of problems and keep the animal informed as to what is going on and what you want to communicate to them. They can also give you important messages as well. You would be surprised at how talkative and helpful they can be. They can be full of wisdom and advice to you and your family. The other important piece to round out the team is some form of energy medicine. So many health issues start early in the animal’s energy field before it ever reaches the physical body. By addressing and clearing out stuck energy, emotions, trauma, etc., that can keep them from reaching the body and possibly creating a disease.

One very important thing to remember about your animal companions, is that they rely on their instincts and if they were to show weakness, they might not survive. This goes back to their days of living in the wild as a species. I am sure many of you have had an animal who was healthy, all good, no sign of any problems, and suddenly you discover they have stage 4 cancer or some other serious illness. The animal has done its best to hide it from you so as not to worry you.

This very thing happened to a dog my husband and I had. As the dog cancer specialist told us, you can do all the treatments, medications, surgeries, etc., but that only delays the inevitable. Better to give your dog a better quality of life to his last days and really love and enjoy your time together. That stayed with me. When we rescued our next dog Fiji, we decided to do all the little things more often. Such as being proactive by utilizing a more preventative approach to his health care. For us, that meant a healthy raw food diet, regular exercise, regular laser and acupuncture visits, and last, regular energy medicine sessions. As soon as I saw any digestive issues, or

emotional upset, or whenever we felt he was ‘off’, I gave him an energy medicine session and checked in with him. I am happy to report that now at 15 ½ he is amazingly healthy, but he is getting older with some arthritis, and diminished sight and hearing. He is still active and full of love and energy. This is the first big major medical hurdle of his life and it is not too bad.

The other part of this equation is, he has helped and supported my husband in so many ways, by helping my husband

clear any emotional or health issues he has which helped Fiji let go of attempting to take on those issues. Our animals do more for us that we realize, so keeping them energetically clean as possible is a benefit to them and to us. I have mentioned in my last few articles about Tandem Mirror Sessions, and this is where they come in to the picture. Our animals are mirrors of their people physically mentally and emotionally. Clearing your stuff helps your animals.

Doing any or all of these actions really

support and help your animal be at their best for as long as possible. Plus, by being proactive, many problems can be found and released or resolved before they turn into a more serious issue or illness.

Why wait until a medical crisis turns into something that is harder to address. Small, consistent energy adjustments pay big dividends in the long run. You are also learning more about your animal and what their purpose is in your life at this time. They are very often here to teach you and share their wisdom, if you are open to receiving it. They want nothing more than to share their love

and take care of you energetically and emotionally. We should do the same for them. Thank them every day and send

them love from your heart to theirs. They will be forever grateful and respond in many surprising ways!

and patios fill up fast. Then head on out and have a great time!

And be sure to look for the FREE Wine 4 Paws Map in March at www.wine4paws. com – free to print or download.

Everyone’s favorite weekend is back!

April 22 & 23 marks the 15th Annual Wine 4 Paws Weekend to benefit Woods Humane Society. I can hardly believe that it’s been 15 years, and hope that on this very special weekend you’ll head out to enjoy all the Central Coast has to offer while helping homeless pets.

Wine 4 Paws is a fun time for just about anyone, and it doesn’t get much easier to participate. Wine tasting = fundraising! Visit any of 75+ wine, cider, and olive oil producers throughout SLO County, all listed at www.wine4paws.com. Somewhere in your weekend, grab lunch or dinner from Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ in Paso Robles. 10% of your purchases from those businesses will be donated to Woods. Voila! You’ve just helped homeless animals in our area, all while supporting local businesses.

No need to buy a ticket, and you don’t have to pre-register. Visit www. wine4paws.com to see who’s donating to Woods Humane Society on April 22-23. Click on each logo and you’ll be directed to their website for more information on tasting menus, hours of operation, reservation options, etc. It will be a busy weekend, so plan ahead and book early where needed, because tasting rooms

Woods is an important resource for our community, and Wine 4 Paws has become a favorite outing for a LOT of folks. For locals, you’re going to go out wine tasting anyway, why not do it April 22-23, when your well spent money will go to such a great cause? We also have people visit SLO County every year just for this event!

2023 was a record-breaking year, with over $75,000 raised, and I continue to be amazed at the generosity of everyone who supports Wine 4 Paws year after year with their participation. And, whether near or far, you can still participate because the wineries also donate that 10% of sales from online sales, too!

Since 1955, Woods Humane Society has been caring for homeless pets and finding them homes. They look after over 3,000 cats and dogs each year at their facilities in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero until they can be united with loving families. In November of 2018, they opened the first North County low-cost spay and neuter clinic at their location in Atascadero. This clinic can be utilized by ANY pet owner.

Woods provides comprehensive care, giving dogs and cats food, shelter, primary veterinary care, exercise, and enrichment. For Woods to continue delivering the same level of guardianship to homeless companion animals and offer them second chances in 2023, they need your help. So, get out there in April – you can join us in “Helping Homeless Pets, One Glass at a Time.”

Custom Organized Binder & Service

Bind your journey, so you can focus on what is important

Whatever journey you are going through, be it medical, business, or personal, I would love to work with you to create the binder you need to support your path. The goal of each binder is to allow you to easily keep track of necessary details without spending all your time doing so. Just as your journey extends past you receiving your binder, so does my service. I would love to continue a partnership that allows your binder to accommodate your changing needs.

My name is Mikala, and my binding journey started in 2016 when my mother was first diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. The first binder I made was for her. I created an organized binder to help keep all her paperwork from being jumbled together in the two-pocket folder that was handed to her when she was initially diagnosed. Six years later, we are starting this journey again with stage III esophageal cancer Even though this next journey won’ t be easy, I know we are prepared for whatever comes our way. Going forward, I am here to offer the support I wish I had, one binder at a time.

SO WHAT IS SAA?

Every so often a new buzzword circulates through the house and veterinary community and recently a biomarker called SAA has become this buzzword. It has drawn interest ion equine veterinary world for its ability to indicate and monitor inflammation. So what is the SAA and why are so many practitioners and researchers starting to analyses it?

SAA is “Serum Amyloid A” a major acute phase protein, made in the liver as part of an immediate response to inflammation caused by infection. It is considered the body’s first line of defense against infection and plays several roles in the inflammatory process but for our purposes it serves as a marker for inflammation because it increases and decreases rapidly. This allows us to monitor this inflammation in real time via a blood test. The SAA is absent or at very low quantities in normal horses and is secreted in the face of inflammation, specifically inflammation caused by an injection. This response is rapid, more rapid that fibrinogen and complete blood count, which are the standard markers we have been using for decades to monitor the disease process. SAA also decreases rapidly and allows us

to monitor the effectiveness of our treatments.

Listed below are some of the applications of SAA testing in the horse industry today.

• General Health Assessment – SAA is found to increase with a variety of health issues, bacterial and viral infections can be diagnosed and monitored.

• Monitoring Pregnancy – SAA levels were reported to increase more than 20 fold in horse with early embryotic loss and it seems to be elevated in mare with placentitis. In

our practice SAA is a standard test in mares with suspected placentitis or pregnancy issues.

• Monitoring post-surgical complications – SAA levels vary with the trauma from surgery alone but invariably rises with post op infections.

• Monitoring complications in foals –

Foals with neonatal septicemia have elevated levels of SAA to the extent that some ranches are running SAA tests on every foal at birth along with IGG testing.

• Monitoring Joint Disease – Both in research and in the field, we are finding that horses with infected joints have elevated SAA in their serum and synovial fluid, allowing

us to adjust the therapies as needed.

Researches are still trying to determine which inflammatory condition increase SAA. We do know that infections inflammation can cause an increase but are not sure as yet what to expect from inflammatory, traumatic and neoplastic that are non-infectious. For example there is currently studies going on to determine if SAA can help differentiate surgical colic’s from medical colic’s. So even SAA can help with diagnosing many conditions today, the future ahead may provide many more answers.

REAL ESTATE SHOWCASE

WHERE WILL YOU GO AFTER YOU SELL YOUR HOUSE?

today, and more competition from other homes on the market, home sellers will likely need to adjust their price expectations in the market this spring.

after sitting on the sidelines for months.

3. You have options

A lot has changed over the past year in the real estate market and you might be wondering what’s in store for the spring and summer housing markets. If you’re planning to sell your house either season, here’s what you should keep in mind:

1. Houses that are priced right are still selling

Houses that are updated and priced at their current market value are still selling. However, the need to price your house right is so important today because the market has changed so much over the past year. With a smaller pool of buyers

While this spring housing market is different than last year’s, sellers with proper expectations who lean on a real estate expert for the best advice on pricing their house well are still finding success. And that’s great news if you’re thinking about selling!

2. Buyers are still out there

As mortgage rates have risen and remain volatile, some buyers have pressed pause on their plans. But there are still plenty of reasons people are buying homes today. Higher mortgage rates simply mean buying a home is out of the question unless home prices fall. For others, higher mortgage rates will be a hurdle, but ultimately will not keep them from getting back into the market

If you’re thinking of selling your house, be sure to explore all the options you have for your next home. Both newly built homes and existing homes offer plenty of unique benefits.

If you have questions about the options in our area, it’s helpful to work with a Realtor who can help connect you with those buyers who are ready to purchase a home. Give us a call, we’d love to help!
