THE RISE OF THE “POINTY-EARED PUP” Without a steady routine

If you’ve been looking to adopt a dog in recent months, you might have noticed a trend: Most of the shelter dogs available for adoption are either husky or shepherd mixes. Woods Humane Society confirms it has seen increasing numbers of these breed types, which it has dubbed “Pointy- Eared Pups” due to their shared characteristic of having upright ears (rather than floppy ears). Also known for their thick coats, intelligence, alertness, and high energy levels, these two breeds have gone up by 5% in the last two years, from about 21.7% of the dogs cared for in 2019, to 26.7% in 2021, and their average length of stay is also increasing. In May 2022, Woods had 13 of these types of dogs available for adoption at once, making up nearly 40% of its available dog population. “Ten years ago, it was very common to see a large amount of adoptable chihuahuas and pit bull mixes at any given time in most shelters,” says Woods Community Engagement Manager Robin Coleman. “Today, it’s Siberian husky and German shepherd mixes.” The nonprofit adoption center believes that one reason shelters across the country are seeing so many homeless and returned husky and shepherd breeds is that they have been popularized in television shows like Game of Thrones, leading people to adopt without understanding the proper care they tend to require. Without a steady routine to fulfill the breeds’ high drives and expend energy, these types of dogs can quickly become escape artists or cause problems by barking or being destructive in the home. “But,” Coleman says, “with the right elements in place, they make amazingly loving, loyal, smart and gentle companions.”

To help find and sustain permanent homes for the many pointy-eared dogs in need, Woods staff members assembled these 6 Pointy-Eared Pointers: Sniff Out Adventure & Enrichment. Aside from daily exercise, Woods recommends mental enrichment games to help deplete the high levels of both mental and physical energy these dogs tend to have. Some of the shelter’s favorites are: puzzle bowls; stuffed and frozen Kongs; hiding toys or treats for nose work; and creating a “dig box” of dirt, crushed ice, or plastic balls for them to dig through to find treats or toys. Tune in to Their Personalities. These dogs are known for being sweet, friendly, affectionate, playful—and talkative! Huskies, in particular, enjoy vocalizing with their dog-friends. Woods staff members say that these noisy dog interactions sometimes scare potential adopters who are unfamiliar with their play style. Before adopting, consider that barking might be a common behavior with these breeds. Have Fun with Training. Huskies and shepherds tend to have aboveaverage intelligence, which means that behavior training can be a fun way to help drain some of their energy while building your bond. Both breeds make excellent students when you use positive
reinforcement training methods and huskies respond particularly well to fastpaced, lightning rounds of working for rewards, followed by some fetch or play breaks. Don’t Dread the Shed. Both of these breed types have a thick, double-coat of gorgeous fur— which can quickly result in an abundance of shedding around the house. For their own health— and for your sanity—get started with a regular brushing routine. Woods recommends using an undercoat rake to help remove a shedding undercoat, keeping a lint brush handy, and intentionally using your brushing time as a calm, affectionate bonding opportunity. Give Practice Exams. Pointy-eared pups are known for being somewhat dramatic when they have to go to the vet. To spare these sensitive creatures any distress, our staff recommends that you start desensitizing them to medical exams

Using lots of treats, praise, and affection, practice touching their paws, looking in their ears, taking a peek at their teeth, lifting their tails, and touching them (palpating) on the abdomen and legs. Play It Safe. Both breed types tend to have some genetic predispositions for certain diseases, such as hip dysplasia. For this reason, Woods staff recommends getting pet insurance when you adopt and establishing vet care early on. nyone with a grey horse is familiar with the term melanoma. When we hear the word melanoma, we tend to think of the skin cancer related to ultraviolet light (sun) exposure with people. However, in horses, melanoma is a skin cancer that is associated with a grey coat color. It has been reported that approximately 80% of all grey horses will develop some form of melanoma during their lifetime. These tumors generally form around the tail and sheath of horses, forming characteristic black, raised nodules of various sizes. Melanoma is a pigment produced by melanocyte in the epidermis. It is proposed, that in grey horses a disturbance in melanin metabolism associated with the progressive greying of horses due to increasing age, results in an intracellular accumulation of pigment. This eventually causes an overproduction of melanocytes due to a transformation into neoplastic cells. These tumors can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Whether benign or malignant they can have no effect on a horse’s quality of life or can become large and obstructive and/or ulcerative and
Dermal Melanoma: These are usually benign but occasionally become malignant over time, especially if they are large or in an atypical location. They frequently develop in mature grey horses under the age of 15, usually under the tail, around the anus, and sheath area (in males). Less common sites are the parotid salivary glands (throat latch), lips, eyelids and neck, usually discrete nodules in varying sizes, single or multiple. Dermal Melanomatosis: These lesions are often benign but have a high likelihood of eventual metastasis (spreading). They usually occur in grey horses that are greater than 15 years old and have a distribution and growth characteristics similar to the dermal melanoma. Anaplastic Melanoma: These are rarely seen, but they are malignant and frequently metastasis. They tend to occur in older (20 plus years) non grey horses. Melanocytic Nevi: These tumors are generally benign and seen in younger horses (average age, 5 years) of any color. They are discrete
nodules found anywhere on the horses body. The obvious question is how should I treat my horse’s melanomas. The first step is to have your veterinarian examine any mass found on your horse. Diagnostic tests can be done to clarify what the mass is, including fine needle aspirate, biopsy or even surgical removal for evaluation of the tissue or cells under the microscope. A complete physical exam with rectal exam may help determine if metastasis has occurred. The most common sites for metastasis include lymph nodes, spleen, liver, abdominal wall and lungs. Treatment options include the following: Surgical Execution: Early treatment of small tumors is ideal to prevent them from spreading to surrounding tissues. In fact, excision of melanocytic nevi and dermal melanomas can be completely curative. Research has shown that excision with a scalpel or CO2 laser has been effective and masses did not recur during a two year follow-up period. Intralesional Cisplatin: Cisplatin is a cancer treating drug that is often used along with surgical excision to kill any leftover tumor cells. The cisplatin can be injected or implanted via

Cimetidine is a histamine blocker that can preserve the body’s immune response and allow tumor cell killing. It has reduced tumor growth and progression in horses with melanoma but not proven to be efficacious in complete tumor resolution. Melanoma Vaccine: Currently a vaccine exists for canine melanoma that has shown good efficacy. A similar vaccine is in the works for horses and is currently being studied at the University of Florida’s College
of Veterinary Medicine. Some of the research is being done by veterinarians in the private sector. Ask your veterinarian about getting your horse in this project. What should you do? In 1931 James Truslow Adams coined the term, “The American Dream” defined as a set of ideals in which freedom gives everyone the opportunity of prosperity and success and is only obtained through hard work and determination. The American Dream found its roots planted in the U.S. Declaration of Independence, documenting that our American founding fathers share two key things that shaped what we believe to be “The American Dream” and that is that “all men are created equal” and that each woman/man has the right to “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” and that is exactly the life that Katie Moore is pursuing… “The American Dream.” In 1992, Katie Moore was nine years old and living on her family farm when she was awestruck by her grandmother, Cassie Graves. Cassie also lived on the farm and her love for horses seemed to rub its way on to Katie. Cassie showed American Quarter Horses

and had shown at the AQHA World Championship Show and to help her pay for her entry fees she decided she would design and make horse hoods. And that’s exactly what she did. Cassie Graves turned one of her spare bedrooms into her sewing room and when she would attend a show, she would set up a booth and sell her horse hoods. As the show season ended, orders would come in, and Cassie continued to sew the horse hoods all year round, each one made to order. Now fast-forward… In 2016, Katie Moore moved back to her family farm in pursuit of, “The American Dream” and she took over her grandmother’s business and is now the creator of Moore’s Cover Ups. Travelling with her trailer, Moore’s Cover Ups, brings with her no less than 150 horse hoods and 250 tail bags to each show, and since each horse hood is a limited design, she only creates a dozen of each pattern. For over five unparalleled decades, Om El Arab has attracted Arabian horse lovers worldwide. Part of the allure may result from legendary breeding program’s tendency to exhibit a tension of opposites. It is equal parts strategy and providence; it is a pledge to upholding tradition while also being fearless of experiments; it is a mother’s vision that could only truly soar with the passion and participation of her own daughter. Om El Arab traces its beginnings to the Black Forest of Germany, where a young Sigi Siller – whose name fortuitously means “She who rides to victory” – chose Arabian horses over German Warmbloods at just eighteen years old… a choice that would set in motion not only her own life, but also the lives of her children and grandchildren as well. Perhaps in a proverbial nod to the strong women of her family, 19-year-old Sigi instinctively recognized the broodmare possibilities of a thin, scar-filled grey mare named *Estopa. Akin to the talent of a world-class athlete, *Estopa’s broodmare ability became abundantly clear from the beginning. El Shaklan, the commanding white stallion who singlehandedly set in motion an entire dynasty, was *Estopa’s first male progeny. Not surprisingly, *Estopa was declared one of the most significant dams in history, the mother of all Arabians. She is not only credited as the foundation of Om El Arab’s historic breeding program, *Estopa also set in motion the program’s unique, rare ability to yield an equal combination of game-changing stallions and mares … standing in stark contrast to most elite breeding programs that are either mare- or stallion-driven.

recognize the distinct type of a horse whose veins flow with Om El Arab blood. The standard of excellence upheld by Om El Arab horses is evident in show rings worldwide. Horses with the blood of Om El Arab have been named national champions in literally ever country that Arabian horses are bred. And from *Estopa children and grandchildren such as Estasha, Ibn Estopa, and Sanadik El Shaklan in the 1970s and 80s to Om El Aisha Aljassimya and Om El Erodite more recently, Om El Arab-bred and -blooded horses reign. In fact, of the last five consecutive World Championships, at least ten of the possible 18 world champions contained Om El Arab blood and that of *Estopa. For decades, it seemed everything Sigi touched turned to gold, even her visionary strategy to cross Spanish and Egyptian breeding, later dubbed “The Golden Cross.” Yet loss seemed ever present, always peeking around the next corner. Sigi’s two children, Janina and Benni, remained the light of her life. Benni chose a different life path in vineyard management. Janina, however, sensed
the same tug as her mother to continue the Om El Arab breeding program. The dynamic duo worked together for over twenty years. It was clear that Sigi’s legacy would be continued into the next generation when the time came. No one was ready when the moment arrived. Sigi fought breast cancer in 2006 and, to everyone’s delight, her cancer went into remission in 2007. But cancer knows no mercy; it returned in several years later, and Sigi passed away in Spring 2016. Janina has capably led the program, remaining true to the classic, linebred type that Om El Arab is esteemed for, while also demonstrating her mother’s astute ability to occasionally step outside the box, resulting in homeruns such as Om El Erodite (Bronze World Champion Yearling Filly after selling for $1.55 million at the Marquise Invitational Auction, a record that still stands to this day) and the up-and-coming fashionable sire, Om El Shawan. Om El Arab recently celebrated its

K-9 PLACEMENT AND ASSISTANCE LEAGUE, INC. Written by Janelle Ward
K-9 Placement and Assistance League, Inc., nicknamed K-9 PALS, is really a special and one-of-a-kind welfare organization for dogs in Santa Barbara County. K-9 PALS is the only organization that provides enormous resources for dogs in county shelters, and also rescues dogs out of the shelters into the K-9 PALS Rescue/Sanctuary Program until forever homes are found. K-9 PALS is the all-volunteer non-profit 501C3 organization, founded in Santa Barbara in 2000, that is dedicated to working on behalf of homeless and abandoned dogs in Santa Barbara County shelters and beyond. K-9 PALS’ mission is to provide humane care, adoptions, rescue, and advocacy for abandoned dogs so that every dog has a chance for a loving home. For the first 12 years of its existence K-9 PALS provided the onsite volunteer program, dog adoptions program, dog behavior program, and dog veterinary care program for the Santa Barbara County Animal Services Shelter in Santa Barbara/Goleta. The success of the Santa Barbara Shelter being a no-kill shelter was only able to be achieved with K-9 PALS’ assistance and resources for the shelter dogs. In 2011 K-9 PALS made the decision to expand the organization’s efforts countywide to provide resources and programs to include the Lompoc and Santa Maria County Shelters, and for other dogs in need. Since that time Santa Barbara County Animal Services has been able to achieve and maintain countywide no-kill status. In addition to direct care and resources for the shelter dogs, K-9 PALS constructed several areas at the Santa Barbara County Shelter to make life better for the dogs while they are awaiting their forever homes. Those areas include the Visitor’s Garden where prospective adopters can meet dogs for adoption, the K-9 PALS Dog Training area - a large fully fenced area for dog training, a storage building

for dog supplies, and several exercise/ play yards so the dogs can spend many hours of every day outside their kennels socializing, playing, or just hanging out with people and other dogs. K-9 PALS, in collaboration with Santa Barbara County, provided renovation of the Santa Barbara Shelter’s main kennel building which included a completely new roof and new dog kennels. K-9 PALS has several important programs to carry out the mission of helping dogs that have been left homeless and abandoned in shelters. K-9 PALS Veterinary Care Program provides veterinary care for hundreds of abandoned dogs in shelters and rescue groups every year, as well as for the dogs that K-9 PALS rescues from shelters. The Veterinary Care Program is truly a life- saving measure because many of these abandoned dogs are suffering from injuries and illnesses, and would die or be euthanized in shelters unless they receive proper veterinary care. K-9 PALS Dog Behavior Training Program provides behavior training for shelter dogs and discounted training classes for people who “adopt dogs rather than shop”. K-9 PALS behavior training is positive reinforcement training and is
provided to adopters to help them and their new dogs get started off on the right “paw”. K-9 PALS Adoptions Program helps find loving homes for abandoned dogs. Since K-9 PALS’ inception in March 2000, the organization has helped to find loving homes for more than 400 dogs every year. K-9 PALS provides adoption events in the Santa Barbara community for K-9 PALS rescued dogs, as well as for dogs that are in shelters and rescue groups. These adoption events provide a friendly venue where the public can meet adoptable dogs and puppies from shelters and rescues. K-9 PALS Community Outreach and Education Program is another valuable resource. This program includes community outreach events to bring awareness about behavior training, adoption adoptions, veterinary care and spay/neuter, and pet education presentations in local schools. K-9

PALS Pony Express Transport Program is another very innovative program that was initiated in 2012 to help transfer dogs from shelters to rescue organizations. K-9 PALS operates solely on the generosity of our community. The organization does not receive any government funding, and is not under the umbrella of any other organization. Donations are the lifeblood of the organization. Whether it is from individuals, local businesses, grants, planned giving or small monthly donations, charitable giving is vital to ensuring that the important work of K-9 PALS continues. K-9 PALS is dedicated to being the advocate for dogs who cannot speak for themselves. K-9 PALS, together with the help of members of our community, and other organizations and businesses, can really help to save lives and make a brighter future for our many canine friends in need.

TRAINING A NEW PUPPY FOR SUMMER TRAVEL Written by Billy Francis
If you adopted a pandemic puppy within the past two years and are thinking about taking him on a road trip or flight this summer, it’s time to start travel training your furry companion. Safe and comfortable passage for you and your puppy requires planning and preparation. Check out these training tips to make the journey smoother for all passengers and to prevent anybody searching for the emergency exit. Training at Home Dogs who are crate trained early in life find a sense of security in having a space that’s just for them wherever they go. Both car and air travel are safer if your pooch is used to the space she’s traveling in. First, find a crate that’s suitable for your travel needs. If you’re planning a road trip, find a crate that not only fits your car, but also allows your pup to be comfortable for long distances. Large dogs can stretch out in this roomy foldable crate, while smaller pups will like this affordable Sherpa bag that’s also approved for air travel. Canines traveling as checked baggage on an airline will need practice in a hard-sided crate. Once you’ve selected the appropriate crate for your best mate, it’s time to train her to use it safely. Taking the time to crate train your new pooch while she’s young will pay off in the long run. Skills like this are also beneficial if you have to spend time apart during the day. • Start off by moving daily meals inside the crate to provide a positive association. • Next, hold a slumber party for one (Fido) inside. • After a few successful sleeps, try a few hours during the day to get her used to being in the crate at different times. If you give in to whining and let your dog out, this behavior is likely to continue in the future.

In addition to crate training, socializing your puppy is important at this stage. Introduce her to cats, other dogs, and children as early and as often as possible, and try walking her in new, unfamiliar places. This will help your pooch get used to unpredictable things she’ll likely see during her travels. Be sure to reward and praise your pup for good behavior around new people and in new places. Puppies are bundles of energy, and that’s why we love them, but this boisterous behavior in the car can be a distraction to the driver. While crate training is the safest way to travel in the car, a booster seat or a seat belt harness combined with a hammock car seat cover will keep your rambunctious co-pilot out of your lap and out of trouble. Before you begin your big adventure, take time to get your puppy used to traveling in a car. Begin by walking your pup calmly to the car and making her sit while you open the door. Practice staying by rewarding her for waiting. Once she understands “stay,” allow her to enter the car calmly and safely and once again reward her when she catches on. Do the same thing if your dog is using a crate in the trunk. Treat searches are a great way to get your puppy used to traveling in the car. While parked in a safe place with the engine off, scatter her favorite nibbles in different places around the vehicle. Then, while keeping her leashed, open the doors and let her find them. Then, do the same thing with the doors closed while you sit in the driver’s seat. Once she’s comfortable, turn on the engine while she sniffs around, letting her get used to the sound. This tasty training tip helps to
alleviate any negative feelings she might have about the car. Before starting a long journey, practice with short trips to get your pooch used to the movement of the vehicle. As a new puppy owner, you know your delightful little doggy can be hyper at times. If she gets excited at the thought of hopping out of the car when you arrive, don’t reward this behavior by letting her out immediately. Hi, my name is Gina, I am married to Roland Meyer, and between the two of us we have eight children and 16 grandchildren. Here is where our story begins… …One day two of our grandsons (Tyson and Carsten) came for a visit when Tyson (who is 11) said to me, “Grandma, when I grow up, I want to be a farmer and raise cows, chickens, and my own breed of goats. I also want to grow garlic and maybe some onions, but I really want to make dog treats for dogs and goat’s milk soap for people.” At that moment I said, “Well then, let’s start with dog treats. But if we’re going to do this, we’re going to do this right and we’ll set it up as a business so that you can learn what it takes to run your own.” Tyson agreed and we both decided that we would add two other partners and that is when we called our first board meeting and brought on my husband, Roland, and Tyson’s brother, Carsten, and the four of us got to work. The first thing we did was I took the boys and had them obtain a business license. The name they chose was, The Meyers

LET’S GET READY TO RODEO!! The 26th Ever Creston Classic Rodeo is just around the corner! The 26th Ever Creston Classic Rodeo is just around the corner! This year’s rodeo will be held September 15-18, 2022, at the rodeo grounds in historic downtown Creston. The rodeo weekend kicks off Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. with Jackpot Team Roping and Ladies Breakaway. On Friday evening there is the fast and exciting Jackpot Barrel Racing, also beginning at 5:30pm.
This year’s rodeo will be held September 15-18, 2022 at the rodeo grounds in historic downtown Creston.
The actual rodeo performance begins Saturday with the Grand Entry at 4:30 p.m., followed by the fast and furious Hide Race, and events such as Kid’s Dummy Roping, Men’s Double Mugging, Sort and Brand, Ladies Ribbon Dogging, and Team Sorting. On Sunday the day kicks off with Cowboy Church at 8:30 a.m., held in the rodeo grounds grandstand, followed by the extremely popular Mutton Bustin at 10 a.m.! Come watch more than 40 kids try their hand at riding sheep in hopes of qualifying for the finals during the afternoon performance, beginning at 12:30 p.m. You won’t go hungry as there will be food vendors selling everything from tri-tip sandwiches to Mexican food and snowcones! Also present will be numerous vendors selling their crafts. Admission to the rodeo is only $10 for adults and kids older than 12. Active members of the armed services and kids under 12 get in free! Avila Beach 4th of July Doggie Parade 404 Front Street, Avila Beach Promenade The Doggie Parade and Doggie Costume Contest is a $5 donation. All dogs must be registered to walk in the parade. They can be pre-registered by completing the registration form available online or during the Pancake Breakfast from 8:30-10:00 a.m. at the Community Center, or from 10:0010:45 a.m. on the Promenade: Corner of San Miguel and Front Street.
