It was an unusually mild summer day in August 2021 when the children showed up to the barn, in their fanciest outfits, for a photo shoot with some of their favorite Arabian horses. The children of the Arabian Horse Riding Academy at Om El Arab were used to participating in photo shoots with their own horses, but this one was special. On this day the children would pose with world famous Arabian horse legends, including stallions. We affectionately referred to this photo session as “Kids & Legends”. The idea was born when AHRA instructor Nedra Johnson was so touched by the relationships she watched form over the summer between the children and the world renowned breeding and show horses at Om El Arab. “It was our favorite activity at summer camp, to venture to the breeding barn on the main property, and visit with the mares, foals, and stallions”, explains Nedra, “and during our visits I started to notice deep, individual relationships forming between specific children and horses, it the magic that I hoped to capture and share with others”. The Arabian horse is known for its incredible loyalty and devotion to humans, as they were originally bred to members of the family, as well as protectors in battle. There are many legends of Arabian horses bravely carrying their owners through wars only to return home to sleep with their children in the desert tents. These traits still exist today and the Arabian horses at Om El Arab exemplify them perfectly. Om El Arab has been a leading international breeder of Arabian horses

for over 50 years and is located here in the Santa Ynez Valley. When the Kids and Legends photo shoot was suggested, the children were so excited and instantly knew which horse they wanted to be photographed with. April Visel, a highly praised horse photographer and workshop artist, was asked to collaborate with Om El Arab and Arabian Horse Riding Academy to capture and bring the emotional connections to life. It turned out to be the perfect match up and during the shoot, an 8 year old girl was cuddling with “her” young stallion, Om El Shawan, Visel was moved to tears by how gentle, loving, and careful he was, especially when she climbed on his back bareback. Another magical moment happened when multi-champion Om El Sultanah, who is famous for her vibrant show ring presence literally started hugging her 9 year old child. As the child wrapped her arms around the beautiful mare, she returned the gesture by wrapping her neck around the child. It was so special to witness. Two of the children choose broodmare powerhouses for their photo partnerships. A very young boy, 6 year old Henry posed with Om El Beladeena in the barn aisle, wearing his blue
suit. This famous mare has produced countless champions around the world, but was so gentle with Henry. Chloe, a 9 year old picked Om El Excella for her pictures. Om El Excella is known for her beauty and for producing the high selling yearling filly Om El Erodite, who sold at auction for $1.5 million. Om El Arab also breeds family-friendly horses for those new to Arabian horses and horse ownership. The Arabian Horse Riding Academy at Om El Arab offers horseback riding lessons, summer camps, pony rides, and

IS IT TIME TO PUT FIDO ON A DIET? Written by Billy Francis
Maintaining a healthy weight for your dog is vital to keep him wagging throughout his life. In 2020, Banfield Pet Hospital examined the health records of millions of pets and found that the number of obese dogs in the U.S. rose to 38%. If your Chihuahua or other small breed dog is 5 pounds overweight, it’s the equivalent of 105 pounds in humans the same as carrying three cinder blocks around with you at all times. Fortunately, a few easy changes to mealtime routine will help keep your dog lean, happy and (maybe) not begging for treats. How to Determine Your Dog's Ideal Weight Your pooch might look a little round in the belly, but does that really mean he's overweight? There's an easy way to find out. In humans, Body Mass Index (BMI) is often used as a guideline for calculating ideal weight and body fat, but a canine’s weight is measured by a Body Condition Score (BCS). Ranging from emaciated to severely obese, this is the scale most veterinarians use to judge where a dog is at and what is needed for a return to health. Your vet will be able to give you Fido's BCS, and tell you what it means, at his next checkup. What's on Fido's Menu? The best way to help a pudgy Pug is to evaluate the contents of her dinner bowl. Low-quality foods often cause weight gain because they include unhealthy filler. Ingredients like corn syrup, MSG, and certain types of meat meal made from bad offcuts are some examples. Suitable dog food depends on a variety of factors like breed, size and age. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, “optimal diets for growing puppies should contain a minimum 8% fat as dry matter.” This can be found in food specific for puppies. Senior dogs require food to support their body and mind as they reach their golden years. Look for foods rich in nutrients for the brain like omega-3 fatty acids, arginine, antioxidants, and B vitamins.

A lifetime study of Labradors by Purina suggests dogs who are fed lean food throughout their lives can live up to 2 years longer than dogs who aren’t. For weight loss, look for food that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Look at the back of the package for a mention of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), an indicator that the product has been successfully tested with dogs. Human-grade food can be expensive, but it’s one of the healthiest types of food for dogs. It is FDA-approved for human consumption, rather than animals, which guarantees higher standards than other dog food. Translational Animal Science completed the first extensive study on human-grade food in 2019. Testing six of JustFoodForDogs’ bestsellers, the study found they were all highly digestible, which is one of the main things to look out for in a balanced dog food diet. Overeating and Over-Treating Has Fido ever heard of too much of a good thing? Even if your pooch is eating the right stuff, he also needs to have the right amount of food per day. period and should be split between two meals. Every dog is different, and you know your pup better than anybody. An inactive canine may require less than the recommended guideline, while an outbound hound who burns a lot of calories may need a heftier scoop. Treats are great for training and rewarding your dog for good behavior, but just like human snacks, there is a tendency to overdo it. If your pooch is used to getting the last few bites of your dinner, replace that with a small healthy treat that’s high in fiber (like a slice of apple), or reward him with a fun activity like a game of fetch instead. Those with neurological symptoms often need more intense nursing support and have a Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) infections have been making headlines in the recent months, so this primer has been put together to provide important facts about the disease(s) and clear up any misconceptions. Herpesviruses are a species specific family of DNA viruses. They are common in horse populations and have the characteristic ability to cause lifelong infection by becoming latent, known to reactive during times of stress. This results in reinfections and transmission of the virus to susceptible hosts reactivate causing disease via damage to the hosts’ blood vessels. Herpesvirus is present in horse’s worldwide, usually dormant and not causing illness. The most common sign is respiratory disease. Although there are 5
subtypes of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV), only three are considered health risks for horses (EHV-1, EHV-3, and EHV-4) • EHV-1 respiratory disease, abortion, neurological disease • EHV-2 upper respiratory disease • EHV-3 venereal disease (equine coltal xanthoma) • EHV-4 respiratory disease (equine rhino, rarely abortion, neonatal death, neurological diseases) • EHV-5 respiratory diseases Clinical signs associated with Equine Herpesvirus Injection Although all five subtypes are known to cause disease, EHV-1 and EHV-4 cause

the great majority of the herpes illnesses in horses. The incubation period ranges from 2-10 days. Respiratory signs for EHV-1 and EHV-4 include fever (102°-106°) lasting up to 7 days. Cough, depression loss of appetite and nasal discharge are usually present at this time. In pregnant mare’s, abortion usually occurs between months 7 and 11 of gestation, about 2-12 weeks post infection. Neurological diseases can occur (usually w/ EHV-1) with signs that include ataxia, paralysis, and loss of bladder and tail function. Transmission The virus is shed in respiratory secretions, typically by way of coughing and snorting. Also, infected aborted fetuses and fetal membrane may spread the virus. Horse to horse contact is the most common form of transmission but indirect transmission via contaminated lead ropes, tack, buckets, trailers and people also occurs.

Diagnosis There are two techniques for diagnosing Equine Herpesvirus. • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a test that detects the DNA in the blood or on a nasal swab. • ELISA test looks for antibodies to the virus. Two tests are taken 3 weeks apart, looking for a rise in titer. Treatment Treatment is aimed relieving symptoms.

PET RIDES AGAIN! Written by Melanie Williams Mahan Partners in Equestrian Therapy has found our new home! After two years of COVID confusion, PET is ready to ride again! We’ve been in the business of therapeutic horseback riding and serving those with special needs in SLO County since 1994. And, we’ve added some more items to our repertoire. After months of searching for a new facility, we relocated to S&R Ranch in Santa Margarita. Louise Stuart, our new barn owner, is a third generation Santa Margarita rancher. She started her boarding facility two years ago. We knew when we visited last fall we had found our place in the sun under the oak trees at S&R Ranch! Moving the horses from our former barn went extremely well. One of our horses, Chief, has a lot of trailer anxiety. He is a bit claustrophobic and those small spaces are tough for him. A move from one barn to the next can be traumatic for these sensitive creatures. After some discussion about where we were going, Chief agreed to load up. The look on his face when we got to S&R Ranch was a joy to behold. It really solidified the move for us, knowing he was happy. Chief recently had his first official rider at the new place. Buddy is 36 years old and has been riding with us since he was 11. Seeing Buddy and Chief together made our hearts soar. Their partnership is a beautiful thing. It is one of the many reasons why we love what we do here at PET. PET has four equine employees. Two Quarter Horses, Chief Four Socks, age 24, and Hot Sonny Fourth, age 22, have been with us for more than half their lives. Gentle Ben, a Norwegian Fjord Horse, and Merlin, a Shetland pony, are both 12 years old. Ben came to work for us when he was almost 6 and Merlin joined our herd last fall. Our boys love their jobs! It takes a special horse to serve

others as selflessly as they do. Chief is our resident clown. He’s always happy to entertain and he’s also a social butterfly! Our riders rank right up there with food for Chief, both a big love of his. His pasture mate, Sonny, is the boss of our little herd. He’s a stoic gelding with a heart of gold. His sometimes grumpy demeanor helps him reinforce his rules, as he’s the leader and must greet everyone first! Ben is our solid little tank of a horse and seems to enjoy entertaining us and untying his lead rope whenever the opportunity presents itself. He also makes it his mission to push over any barrel or cone in the vicinity. After all, he is a Fjord! Merlin rounds out our team nicely. We have been pleasantly surprised every day with this little pony. He’s the sweetest thing to all and his energy is infectious. Merlin loves to lead the herd around the arena; he’s fast for a little one! A kiss from Merlin is just the best! After a long and arduous journey through the ups and downs of a pandemic, we’ve finally gotten back to business. One new part of that business is Equine Facilitated

Mental Health. We’ve started working with Transitions Mental Health and several therapists around the Central Coast. Horses are very empathetic creatures. Their survival depends on it. Bringing horses and people together in a peaceful, safe environment is a huge goal for PET. Louise has been working alongside PET to adapt her place to help us reach those goals. She’s currently
developing an equine agility course on the property. We’re looking forward to taking our riders and horses through the obstacle course Louise is planning! In recent years, new pet insurance companies have shaken up the market with innovative ways to insure our best friends. If you haven’t purchased pet insurance before or are interested in looking for new coverage options, check out these useful tips to avoid pet insurance regret and expensive surprises when it’s time to bring Fido to the vet. 1. Don't Wait Many pet parents don’t think much about pet insurance until their dog develops a serious medical condition or faces an emergency vet visit. But, the best time to buy coverage is early in a pet’s life, before the onset of any health problems. You never know when an illness, accident or health condition may occur. So, insuring your pet early can save you money down the road and reduce your risk of having to pay an astronomical vet bill. So, tip #1 is to get your pet covered ASAP! 2. Consider Your Pet’s Age Whether you care for a playful puppy or a senior snuggler, finding an insurance plan tailored to your pet’s needs is easier than ever. Parents of energetic young pups may want a policy offering generous accident insurance benefits, such as Figo. If you have a senior dog, consider a company like Spot that features policies with no upper age limit. No matter the age of your pet, always look for providers that will guarantee coverage as your pet gets older. For example, Nationwide promises that it won’t drop a pet who enrolls before age 10, as long as you don’t allow coverage to lapse or expire. 3. Breed Matters From Pugs to Poodles and everything in between, different breeds have different medical needs. Pet insurance companies know this and craft plans accordingly. Often, this means charging higher premiums for certain breeds. In some cases, certain genetic conditions may be excluded from coverage altogether. So,

if you have a purebred animal, pay close attention to the medical conditions and procedures that a particular policy will and won’t cover. For example, Embrace offers an accident-only plan that provides coverage for bloat, a life-threatening illness that can be common in certain large-breed dogs like Great Danes. 4. Get Multiple Quotes Similar to health and auto insurance companies for humans, pet insurance carriers offer a wide range of policies, premiums and coverage options for your four-legged family members. No two pet insurance companies provide the exact same coverage for your 8-year old Yorkiepoo, so you should definitely shop around to compare options. Price Isn’t the Only Factor Once you’ve obtained quotes from multiple pet insurance carriers, it’s time to really dig into the fine print to determine what a particular policy covers related to your pet’s routine care, accidents, and other major medical events. The monthly premium is certainly important, but keep in mind other costs like out-of-pocket expenses you’ll be responsible for, as well as expensive veterinary procedures that may not be covered by a particular plan. The rest of the bill is left for you to pay. One of the few companies to offer 100% reimbursement for new injuries and illnesses is Figo. If you don’t want to wait to be reimbursed, Trupanion works with select vets to offer direct payment, which means you get a decision on your claim in seconds and don’t have to deal with the reimbursement process. Pets Best can also pay your vet bill directly through an optional claims reimbursement feature called Vet Direct Pay. 8. Understand Premiums vs. Deductibles Each month, pet insurance policyholders pay a premium, which varies depending on how extensive a policy is and how high the deductible is set (the amount of money that needs to be met before pet insurance kicks in). High deductibles can pay off when your pooch is young and his cost of healthcare is likely to be less than the cost of a high premium every month. Lower deductibles can be beneficial for people who prefer to know when money is leaving their bank account, rather than being hit with a large vet bill at an unspecified time. Pets Best is one of the few companies that offers customizable plans that allow members to select their own deductible. To reward its policy users, Embrace automatically lowers deductibles by $50 every year you don't make a claim.
9. Be Prepared For the Bill Like most insurers, every pet insurance company will charge a monthly membership fee that varies according to your dog, his coverage, and the deductible. Fortunately, many policies can be catered for specific budgetary needs. Pet insurance ranges from as little as $10 to over $100 per month, but according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, the average annual cost is just under $50 per month for accident and illness coverage. Lemonade Pet Insurance starts at just $10 per month for a basic plan that includes certain diagnostics and procedures. For an affordable flat fee and no worries about copays and deductibles, Pawp offers one of the cheapest insurance alternatives at $24 per month for up to six pets in a household. 10. Don’t Let Coverage Lapse Insurance needs for your pet and budget may change over time. But, before switching providers, consider the impact that changing insurers may have on coverage for your pet’s pre-existing conditions. And, once you do have coverage in place, be sure to make those premium payments on time each month to avoid any lapse in coverage.

Prepare your pets for fireworks on the 4th of July Whether or not you’re planning your own Independence Day celebration, it’s important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after Fourth of July festivities. Preparing in advance: • Make sure your pets have ID tags with up-to-date information. If you have horses, consider marking a safety (breakaway) halter with your contact information and leaving it on your horse during this stressful time. • Talk with your vet about microchipping. This simple procedure can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost. • Take a current photo of all of your cats, dogs and horses. • If your pet is anxious on this holiday, consider behavioral therapy to desensitize your pet. Some pets may need medication. Consult your veterinarian. • Make sure your yard is secure enough to keep your pet contained. Check that pasture fences are secure enough to keep horses or other livestock confined. Safety during July 4 celebrations: • Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings. Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks. • Keep horses and livestock in safely fenced areas and as far from the excitement and noise as possible. • Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal and kabob skewers away from curious pets.

You may have been at the beach on a random Sunday morning and witnessed a comical scene - herds of corgis romping around. Chances are you spotted the Central Coast Corgis! Central Coast Corgis (CCC) is a community meetup group that started in the fall of 2016 by Nissa (Eunice) Lee when she moved to the area with her corgi Mocha. Having been a member of an active group in Denver, Nissa sought out corgi events in SF, LA, and Sacramento when she moved to California. She enjoyed watching numbers of corgis running around playing together and delighted in witnessing the joy, fun, laughter, and smiles that these experiences brought to attendees and random passersby.

When Nissa moved to San Luis Obispo, she searched for a corgi community and could not find one. She was motivated and decided to start hosting one! Meetups started as monthly gatherings where a small group of corgis would meet in Avila to play together. In those first days, it wasn’t uncommon for Nissa and Mocha to be the only attendees, but by 2019, the group regularly welcomed 20-25 corgis at each event. With such a consistent turnout, it was time to start thinking about hosting themed events and possible to start helping the local pet community-at-large! With Oktoberfest just a couple months away in the summer of 2019, an idea was born to merge the beloved German tradition with corgis in costume to benefit Woods Humane Society. Corgtoberfest was created and the rest is history! The first year featured dressedup corgis and themed art. Beda, of Beda’s Biergarten generously agreed to partner with CCC to hold the event and donate

Today, CCC exceeds 100 corgi “members” and continues to welcome new furry friends every month. On meetup Sundays, 30-40 attendees typically show up at alternating beach sites in Cayucos and Avila to accommodate North and South County residents. Visitors come from as far as Fresno, Monterey, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. All corgis, corgi mixes, and friendly dogs are welcome! CCC meets from 11-12 pm one Sunday a month. 10% of food and beverage sales to the cause. Over 40 corgis showed up dressed as anything from pretzels to lederhosen to honey bees.

Corgtoberfest was an instant success and in its third year raised nearly $2,000 for the Woods Humane Society through the creation of handmade art, masks, club t-shirts, bandanas, wood burnings, ceramics, and more. All items are custom made and donated by CCC organizers and community members and all proceeds go to Woods. CCC is planning the 2022 event already so keep your eyes open for more creations from local artists, silly corgis in costume, and good German beer! In 2020, Nissa welcomed Sydney Phillips (mom to Clifford the Corgi) to join CCC as co-organizer. When Nissa’s corgi Mocha started showing signs of degenerative myelopathy (DM) and was not always able to attend meetups, Nissa hoped to find someone who could share the tasks of keeping the group going. She noticed Sydney’s mutual passion for the corgi community and her shared interest in creating corgi-themed arts and crafts. Today, CCC exceeds 100 corgi “members” and continues to welcome new furry friends every month. On meetup
