Situated in Sunny Central California, The Oaks Hotel & Suites is where you’ll find your home-away-from-home when visiting Paso Robles, or as the locals call it, Paso. For those unfamiliar to Paso Robles, it is the kind of genuine town that is sure to rub off nothing but sunshine and smiles. Paso Robles is most popular for being home to over two hundred vineyards and wineries located off the 46-east highway and 101-interstate. What makes Paso so special is the experience it creates for not only the wine connoisseurs but also those wanting to learn about the basics of wine tasting. Paso is also a short scenic drive to the historic Hearst Castle and seaside communities like Morro Bay and Cambria.

Wine Country Arabian Horse Association was started in 2014 with 20 members. We are an affiliate of the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) located in beautiful Sonoma County, we have now grown to 75 members. We started this club to promote the Arabian horse to newcomers, not just those that already own Arabians. We wanted to offer more all-breed affordable schooling shows, so that anyone could afford to show. What better way to show off our Arabians but amongst other breeds. We host 2-3 schooling shows per year. We also host Dressage, Ranch Riding, Horsemanship Clinics, all held at the
beautiful Fairwind Farm in Santa Rosa, CA, www.fairwindfarm.biz. We also sponsor Arabian Horse Races at the Sonoma Country Fair.
Our club offers trail rides, social events, and demonstrations. We have a very active youth group. Patti Belanger is our youth coordinator, she offers trail rides, beach rides, and overnight camping.
We were awarded AHA 2017 Club of the year. We won the Membership
Recruitment and Activities Category in 2017. We won Club of the Year for 2018 and the Membership Recruitment Award for 2018. We won 2019 Club of the Year and 2019 Community Promotion and Activities Award, and the 2021 Membership Recruitment Award.

BAD ECONOMY, GOOD HORSE OWNER
Written by Cathleen Trope
you board, it’s very likely your barn has had to raise rates or go out of business. You may have been comfortable with keeping a horse when it cost $500 per month, but there’s nowhere in your budget to absorb an additional $250.
2022 is a year that is making a lot of good horse owners tear their hair out. Inflation and gas prices have contributed to an exponential increase in the cost of keeping horses. Our hay is up 47% here in northern L.A. County! This is a direct cost if you keep your horses at home. If
Every week, our rescue gets requests to take in horses, but sadly we’ve had to implement a total moratorium on intakes, because we are already partially funding from personal income in supporting the 33 that we have. We hate thinking about how these horses may be in jeopardy, but putting our existing horses at risk by taking in too many isn’t a viable solution. So let’s talk – now – about some things you can do to make sure you aren’t left unable to afford your horse if costs continue to escalate.
We have been lucky in that horse costs in Southern California have stayed fairly stable for many years. In the ten years we’ve been operating Polo Pony Rescue, we haven’t seen many fluctuations in board rates, hay costs, or farrier. Our vets have been kind to us too, but with the cost of the gas at 200% or more or what it used to be, even that has come to an end and we’re seeing higher vet bills.
So let’s talk – now –about some things you can do to make sure you aren’t left unable to afford your horse if costs continue to escalate.
At the risk of sounding like everyone with a Facebook reel, a “side hustle” is a good thing to have during tough times. Avoid anything that requires start-up costs or seems too good to be true. Look for legitimate work-from-home opportunities on sites like Upwork.com or pick up a weekend job close to home. There are also many companies hiring for simple work-at-home customer service jobs. I just talked to a horse owner in Florida while trying to resolve a problem with my PayPal account! If you’d prefer a side hustle that focuses on four-legged customers, pet sitting and farm sitting continue to be a great source of cash on the side.
If you are already too overwhelmed with existing work and family responsibilities, look at ways your horse can partially or fully support themselves. This may be a part-lease, ideally to someone who is already at your barn or riding with your trainer. It can also be letting your horse be used for some lessons with
your trainer at your barn. I am wary of horses going to other locations as this is much more risky, but if you’re at a busy boarding barn, the odds of finding a compatible lessee are pretty good and you’ll still know how your horse looks and be able to pick up on behavioral changes that might mean the lease isn’t a good match.
Another way to make sure you and your horse can stay together is economizing on things that don’t affect your horse’s welfare. I wouldn’t go longer between farrier visits, but taking them out of training temporarily is better than having to rehome them. Making your own baggies of supplements for the barn is much more economical than buying them pre-portioned in plastic packs. Shop around online for the best prices on the things your horse really needs. I just got a huge rebate on a large bottle of Equioxx from FarmVet. com. I am in favor of supporting your local businesses when possible, but if things are financially dire, you’ll find
the supplements and stable supplies you need are a lot cheaper online.
There is a tendency to believe there might be a better home for your horse – especially a retired horse – one that would have plenty of money for his expenses. That idea has landed so many horses on a truck to a Mexican slaughterhouse. It’s easy for a scammer to pretend to be a great home when they come out to see your horse. Kill buyers send their wives and the kids out to look at horses so that you will
trust them, waive any adoption fee and let them drive off with your horse – who will be dead within days. Please don’t fall into this trap. The best thing you can do for your horse is hang on to them, take a good hard look at your finances, and figure it out.
It won’t be easy – but it will be worth it. The world is full of thousands of people who regret giving away their horses and zero people who regret keeping them.

PREPARING YOUR HORSE FOR THE FALL AND WINTER SEASON VET COLUMN
The Humphrey Giacopuzzi Equine Hospital
By Humphrey Giacopuzzi Equine Hospital
As another summer season winds to an end, horse owners should plan on making management plans for the cooler seasons ahead. From feed and shelter, to routine deworming and vaccination, there are still some special needs that need addressing for the upcoming season. Living in Southern California, we do not experience the harsh weather of the Midwest or East Coast; yet these cooler months can none-the- less provide the horse owner with plenty of challenges.
Feeding, Vaccinations and Dewormings
As the weather cools, your horse may require extra feed or even a boost in their concentrate (or grain) rations to maintain weight. For a horse to remain an “easy keeper” during the fall and
winter months, he needs to be free of parasites and properly immunized going into the climate change. Often we “cookbook” our horses deworming schedule, but it is a good idea to run a fecal exam before fall deworming to see how you are doing. Your veterinarian can guide you on where and how to get test preformed.
If you have let your horses’ summer vaccinations get behind, scheduling now is a good idea, especially with the respiratory diseases (including equine influenza and rhinopneumonitis). Tetanus is only needed once a year, as are strangles, the encephalitises (sleeping sickness) and West Nile virus vaccines. The encephalitises and West Nile vaccines are best given in early spring before the onset of warmer temperatures, as these diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes. Once again consult your veterinarian for the vaccination program, which best suits
the needs of your horse. Owners with pregnant broodmares will need to stay current on their Pneumabort K (equine herpes virus abortion) vaccinations at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation, regardless of time of year.
Horses are much less sensitive to cold than humans. It might make you feel better to know that your horse is tucked away in his stall in a closed -up barn, but this can cause respiratory ailments as a result of poor ventilation. He might better turned out with access to shelter when he desires it. Of course, a shelter from rain is desirable, but whatever kind or barn or stall you use, keep it well ventilated and plenty of fresh water!
Dental Work
Having your horse’s mouth examined is an easy thing to check off your list as you prepare for the winter months. Obvious clues to oral issues include weight loss, dropping feed from the mouth, a one-sided nasal discharge, or foul smelling breath. Unfortunately, horses can have dental disease with no obvious outward signs, so an annual oral exam to evaluate for sharp points and loose
molars is usually necessary. As your horse ages, attention to his teeth is ever more important.
Autumn Disease Watch —Colic
There are some ailments, which regardless of our level of preparation, seem to increase in frequency during the second half of the year. In Southern California, we tend to see an increase in signs of colic in the fall, for reasons not completely understood. To help minimize the risk of your horse colicking,
1 Deworm regularly and have a fecal egg counts done in order to better strategize your deworming plan
2 Have regular feeding times and feed high quality feed
3 Provide access to clean, fresh water at all times.
4 Regularly exercise your horse
5 Keep access to sand minimal by feeding in a feeder and not off the ground.
As the weather cools, your horse may require extra feed or even a boost in their concentrate (or grain) rations to maintain weight.

REAL ESTATE SHOWCASE
HOUSING MARKET SHIFT
Written by Kathy Fissori
There’s no denying the housing market is undergoing a shift this season as buyer demand slows and the number of homes for sale grows. But, that shift actually gives you some unique benefits when you sell. Here’s a look at the key opportunities you have if you list your house as we move into the holiday season this year:
Opportunity #1: You Have More Options for Your Move
One of the biggest stories today is the growing supply of homes for sale. Housing inventory has been increasing since the start of the year, primarily because higher mortgage rates helped cool off the peak frenzy of buyer demand. But what you may not realize is, that actually could benefit you.
If you’re selling your house to make a move, it means you’ll have more options for your own home search. That gives you an even better chance to find a home that checks all of your boxes. So, if you’ve put off selling because you were worried about being able to find somewhere to go, know your options have improved.
Opportunity #2: The Number of Homes on the Market Is Still Low
Just remember, while data shows the number of homes for sale has increased this year, housing supply is still firmly in sellers’ market territory. To be in a balanced market where there are enough homes available to meet the pace of buyer demand, there would need to be a six months’ supply of homes. According to the latest report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), in September, there was only a 3.3 month’s supply vs a 6 month supply in a normal market.
While you’ll have more options for your own home search, inventory is still low, and that means your home will still be in demand if you price it right. That’s why the most recent data from NAR also shows the average home sold in September still saw multiple offers and
sold in as little as 14 days.
Opportunity #3: Your Equity Has Grown by Record Amounts
The home price appreciation the market saw over the past few years has likely given your equity (and your net worth) a considerable boost!
Home owners trying to decide if now is the time to list their home for sale are still in a good position in many markets across the country as a decade of rising home prices gives them a substantial equity cushion.
If you’ve been holding off on selling because you’re worried about how rising prices will impact your next home search, rest assured your equity can help. It may be just what you need to cover a large portion (if not all) of the down payment on your next home.
But, if you’re thinking of selling, today’s buyers have more options than they had last year. That may mean you’re not able to ignore some of those repairs or cosmetic updates you could have skipped in previous months. As a recent article from Realtor.com says:
“To stand out in the market, sellers should make their home attractive to buyers, which usually means making some selective updates.”
The key word here is selective. Since it’s still a sellers’ market, focusing on a few key areas may be enough to make your house stand out from other options. And since inventory is still low overall, it’s also possible buyers may be willing to handle the renovations themselves once they move in. It all depends on buyer demand and the available inventory in your local area. For advice on what’s happening in your market and what to do to make your house show well, lean on a professional.
Not All Renovation Projects Are Equal
In addition to making sure your house makes a good first impression, you’ll also want to consider the “Return on Your
Investment” (ROI) for any renovations. According to the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), here are the projects that could net you the best return when you sell your house (see visual below):
How To Draw Buyer Attention to the Upgrades You’ve Made
No matter what, contact a local real estate professional for expert advice on
what work needs to be done and how to make it as appealing as possible to future buyers. Every home is different, so a conversation with your agent is missioncritical to make sure you make the right moves when selling this season.
Bottom Line
Today’s housing market still favors sellers. However, in today’s shifting market, it’s important to spend your time and money wisely when you’re getting ready to move!

GLENDALE RANCHO EQUINE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Written by Liz Radley
Our mission: To protect, preserve and promote the equestrian community in Glendale Rancho and neighboring areas.
We are horse-people with a collective voice to the Glendale City Council and other organizations. We also represent the interests of horses who live in Glendale, even if their owners live in other cities! And, of course, we support the local equestrian businesses on whom we rely.
Horses are without borders, so we are closely aligned with our neighbors in the Burbank Rancho, Atwater Village Equestrian District and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. We all share over 50 miles of trails in Griffith Park, with amazing views over Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. The Hollywood Sign features in many photos!
The Glendale Rancho itself is home to over 200 horses, although the ZIP code is less than 200 acres! Many are boarders along with movie and rental horses in the small-but-mighty 2-block Commercial Equestrian Zone. In addition, a surprising number are tucked away in the backyards of our homes. Having horses in my garden was a childhood dream of mine, now come true!
On City of Glendale maps the area is called Riverside Rancho, but we rarely call it that - it’s simply ‘the Glendale Rancho’, next to ‘the Burbank Rancho’. The City describes us this way: “Popular with equestrians, Riverside Rancho is one of the few urban areas in Los Angeles County that allows residents to keep horses on their property. The name describes both its proximity to the Los Angeles River and its “ranch-style” environment. Easy access to Griffith Park by trails and riding paths make this area attractive to riders, as it is not unusual to see horses sharing the streets with cars and bicycles.”
And our reason to organize? We want OUR voices representing this city’s diverse equine community to be heard by our City Council and other organizations. We realized that voices from non-residents and other interestslike developers - were being heard while we were busy at the barn or out riding!
Our concerns include: protecting the land use of horse-keeping zones and backyard stables, sufficient city water allowance during drought, emergency preparedness/evacuation planning, traffic calming, better signage to enhance safety, manure composting - well, there are plenty of issues to discuss...
This has also given us a voice to the long-established Los Angeles Equine Advisory Committee, whose different representatives cover the whole City of Los Angeles, sharing the same vision of protecting the interests of horses and their people.
Personally, I’m also Co-Admin for the Burbank-Glendale-Griffith Park Equestrians, whose Facebook Group is over 5,000 people. I come from a background of riding/training in the dressage/eventing world.
We realized that in order for our voices and interests to be heard, we needed to organize to protect our horses and trails. You can do the same. Seek out elected officials and form alliances because the developers are.
Be sure to look at your community’s strengths and mention these. For example, horse-keeping areas are said to have less crime and a stronger neighborhood watch presence.

HELLO FROM CHIRON ENERGY MEDICINE – IT’S LOVELY TO MEET YOU
Written by Carolyn Osborn Energy Intuitive, Chiron Energy Medicine for People and Animals
are many people who can actually see those energy bodies, and my own work makes direct use of them.
So how do our energy bodies relate to energy medicine?
Please allow me to share some new ways to expand your options for helping your horse or dog emotionally and physically with Energy Medicine. I am Carolyn Osborn, and I work with animals energetically to help them heal physically and emotionally. The Energy Medicine I use is rooted in several powerful and effective traditions. How many of you have used Acupuncture on your animal? That used to be considered Woo Woo in our Western mindset but is now fully accepted and a common tool to help your animal, just as it helps people. Well, the energy medicine I provide is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine/ Five Element Theory (the basis of acupuncture). Think of it as acupuncture without the needles. It is equally, and often more effective energetically, especially with skittish or traumatized animals. How does this work, you ask? This is where the energy aspect comes into play.
How I use Energy to Heal, and the benefits of distance work
Many of you may have heard about or used an animal communicator. Energy Medicine/Healing is an extension of that same skill. Everyone and everything is made of energy. While we have taken a physical form on this physical plane of our world, we are still made up of energy at our core level. This allows me to use the intuitive skills I have studied, developed, and refined to connect through the energetic level with you and your animal to facilitate a healing, release, clearing, etc. We are all made up of several energy bodies that go out in layers around our physical body. They are generally referred to as our Aura, which extends around our body. There
Basically, every disease or disruption in our physical bodies has to start from an energetic perspective. If left untreated or not released, such disruptions can eventually take on physical form in our bodies, creating an illness or disease. However, by clearing and balancing your energetic fields, your body, and the same is true for animals, can then start the healing process and ultimately become healthy again.
This also explains why I can do ‘distance sessions’, where I do the work over Zoom from my office. I do not need to be next to the animal to facilitate the energy healing. Since energy is everywhere, and in all things, there is not actually any distance, or barrier, between me and my animal client. Just ask my kitty clients in Hong Kong, and other places around the world. Plus, the animal and their person can be at home where they are most comfortable, relaxed, and familiar, which helps their receptivity to healing.
How emotions impact our animal’s health
If you have a horse or a dog, I can almost guarantee that you are more emotionally involved with them than most people in your life. They mean everything to you, and when something goes wrong with them, it hits you very hard. Why? They are made of unconditional love, and they support and teach us so much without us even realizing it. How did your animal partner come into your life? Most likely they found you, even if you think you found them.
They have many of the same traumas, sadness, grief, pain and love that we do. Especially if you have a horse, (whether you compete or not) that is dealing with those emotions, it can disrupt your riding plans. It can ultimately affect their health. With both horses and dogs, they often come to us from a previous home and many times unknown circumstances. How were they treated? Were they Carolyn and Jedi connecting heart to heart.
Gemini is all ears and has much to tell Carolyn, too.
BUSINESS PREVIEW 22 EQUINE AND CANINE NEWS
abandoned, abused, traumatized or just feeling confused going to a new home, possibly several times. Maybe they had to leave a person whom they were very attached to, and their new person seems not get them in the same way.
Why is the bond so important with our animals?
The animals in our lives find us not by chance, but by design. There are no coincidences when it comes to the animals we have in our lives. Each one is with you for a specific reason, and they take their job very seriously. If you look back over all your animal relationships, look at it from a higher perspective of how they helped you through tough times and good times. They are the ultimate teacher, especially to show us unconditional love and patience. Their greatest gifts to us are love, compassion, trust, empathy, patience and acceptance. Open yourself to accept their gifts and honor them by acknowledging what they have shown you about your deeper self. Consider yourself blessed to have
shared your life with them.
Chiron Mirror Sessions: Tandem Healing for You and Your Animal
My specialty, besides being an energy healer and animal communicator, is working with animals who may be exhibiting odd behaviors that are many times are a reflection, physically or emotionally, of old emotional wounds or patterns in their person. Those animals are here in our life to be that mirror for you and help you see what has been hidden or repressed for years. By healing and opening yourself to a deeper healing journey, you can clear those behaviors and patterns from your animal, helping them to ultimately heal as well.
There are seven Soul Contracts that we can have with our animal companion, but the two main ways animals reflect them is physically and emotionally. Have you ever had a pet that had the same physical issues you did? That is no coincidence. They have agreed to help you by taking
on your illness or disease. They may also take on some of your unexpressed emotions such as grief, depression, anger or fear. They can teach us so much, if we learn how to pay attention. The greatest gift you can give your animal is to own and take care of your energy wounds and issues.
I would love to have a free chat with you to introduce myself and answer any questions you might have about my work, or about how I can be of assistance to you and your animal. All my work is complementary to traditional Veterinary care, supporting it and filling in when they do not have an answer. I have used this work on my horses and dogs for years, and they love it. They truly enjoy and respond to the non-invasive aspect of it. It feels so good to them!
Fiji found his forever home with Carolyn after being given up.

ARE DOGS ALLOWED IN UBER OR LYFT RIDESHARES?
ride for Fido's fare. Drivers can accept or reject the mode in their preferences, giving passengers additional peace of mind in knowing that their furry friend is welcome in the car. Pets are not allowed on Uber Pool rides.
Rideshares are a convenient and stress-free way for millions of people to get around. Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare companies can also be a handy transportation solution for your pet. But do dogs get a “fare” deal when it comes to hailing a pet-friendly ride?
Uber
Uber makes it easy for customers to bring Fido along for the ride with Uber Pet. The feature allows riders to select "Uber Pet" as an option when they request a ride. This alerts the driver that you will be accompanied by one pet. While there are no breed or size restrictions, any additional pets you want to bring are within the individual driver's discretion. A small surcharge will be added to the
Uber Pet is currently available in most U.S. cities as well as select international locations, including cities in Canada and Australia. In other markets, customers must request their ride and then call the driver and ask them if it’s ok to bring a dog. The decision to allow Fido is left to each individual driver. Canceling the ride immediately after contact will prevent a cancellation fee if they say no. While small pups will be comfortable in an UberX, riders with big dogs should request an UberXL. Other options include high-end Uber Select and Uber Black cars. Passengers in any ride should bring a clean blanket with them to keep the Uber’s seats hair free. Be warned, any mess left behind by your pet means that
you could get hit with a cleaning fee— the bigger the mess, the bigger the fee. Some drivers also allow cats on board as long as they're in a pet carrier.
Lyft
Lyft is Uber’s biggest competitor in the U.S. Many of the rules that govern pet rides in Uber also apply to Lyft, and drivers often work with both companies. The decision to allow pets is left to each driver, and customers should get approval before they bring Fido. In addition to a standard car option, Lyft offers Lyft Lux, Lux Black, and Lux Black XL, offering riders luxury upgrades and
roomier vehicles if needed.
Customers who are charged a fee after a Lyft driver has canceled their ride due to their pet can tap “Contact Support” on the app to have it refunded. Be kind to your driver if he or she accepts your pup. Lyft operates in over 600 U.S. cities as well as 10 cities in Canada.

The stallion’s name is LTE Pincel Especial, age 5 years. Trish Palmer has owned him all his life. Tony Botello of D Ranch has done all his training. Trish's dame was breed to our stallion at D Ranch. These pictures were taken at a recent show is Temecula. They were taken in our class and both pictures show the front leg and the overreach of the back leg which is what makes the Peruvian horse's gait so smooth.
Every ranch talks about Champion bloodlines and blue ribbons. We have our fair share of both but what makes D Ranch so special is the combination of all the pieces needed to make a great Peruvian Horse, whether it's for show or enjoying out on the trail.
We start with excellent individuals from proven bloodlines. We add patient, gentle handling from the very start and impeccable training in the saddle. Our horses are exposed to a wide variety of experiences: they don't just go around and around an arena. They are taken through obstacle courses, ridden on the trail and whatever else our trainer, Tony Botello, thinks of. To him, consistency and experience make all the difference.
Our young horses are trailer trained before they are saddle trained. Saddle training does not begin until they are 3 years old. They are trained for shows, trail and pleasure riding. If you want a Champion, we certainly have those. But if you’re looking for more and want a horse that’s the complete package - bloodlines, beauty, strength, brio, gait and training, you definitely must come for a visit to D Ranch.

LOST TRAIL
In September of 1805, the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery struggled to find a trail through the Bitterroot Mountains. Their travails gave name to Lost Trail Pass, crossing the Idaho/Montana border. Two peaked bands represent the Columbia River Basin drainages divided by Lost Trail: Bitterroot Clark-Fork to the north, and Salmon to the south. The middle band represents the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge, which provides crucial winter habitat to fish, foul, and mammals large and small.
