WALK — TROT — HEAL Submitted by Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program
The Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program has been sharing the healing power of horses with people with special needs for three decades. It was founded by neuropsychologist Mary Ann Evans, Ph.D. in 1990 and is now located at the Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center. The group is a Premier Accredited Center with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International. Therapeutic riding is particularly helpful for individuals on the autism spectrum or with cerebral palsy. “The horse’s gait, or walking pattern, is like that of the human. Riding on a horse helps people who otherwise might have difficulty walking experience a proper form of gait. This, in turn, allows their muscles to be properly conditioned. It also stimulates the rider’s spinal cord and the part of the brain that controls speech. These benefits often carry through to other aspects of their lives, so we typically see lasting results. I have seen significant progress in patients even after just a few sessions of riding at the Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program.” Mary Beth Johnson, Physical Therapist.

“Since the movement of the horse’s walking gait stimulates our spinal cord and language center of the brain, so we see beautiful things happen, such as first words,” Robin Serritslev, Executive Director explained. One student, Marie Stoll shares that “Of all the therapies I have tried for my MS, therapeutic riding is by far the best for both my mobility and mental health.” The group’s slogan is Walk. Trot. Heal. Balance is improved, confidence blossoms, communication is improved, friends are made, and fun is had. Once a student begins the program individually, they may stay as long as they would like. Several students have been attending for 15 years. About half of their students are children. Some students graduate to become volunteers. Volunteers tack horses, lead horses and side-walk with students during lessons. “We are a safe space, without judgement, and lots of joy,” Serritslev said.

Therapeutic horses are hard to find. Therapy horses must be easy going around loud noises and quick movements, yet sensitive to human emotion and behavior, and above all else, they must enjoy interacting with people. veterinarian, Ben Bramsen, DVM to help them find horses when they have an opening. Students often have their favorite horses and horses often have their favorite students. The Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program is hosting a Polo Tailgate event at Folded Hills Ranch on July 10 and a Cowboy Ride-A-Thon from the 4th of July through Labor Day. The Cowboy-Ride-A-Thon encourages people to ride 10 or more miles to raise money for the organization’s scholarship program.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DOG FOR BOARDING Boarding can be stressful - for you and your dog. Here are some tips to help you through the process of making boarding a vacation for both of you. Written by Ligaya Kelly
during the stay. Make sure your contact knows where your pet is and how to handle things in the event you have an emergency while you are gone. 8 DO NOT do a long, tearful goodbye. Your dog does not understand this. If you trust your boarding facility, hand off the leash and let them walk the dog to their spot.
1 Do your research and interview several facilities or in-home pet boarders. 2 Do a meet and greet. If it is not a requirement, make sure to bring your pet to the location to sniff around, meet some of the staff and then go home with you. If you have time, do a day of daycare. It’s a great way to ease them into the idea.
SUGGESTIONS: I like asking owners to bring their pet before breakfast or before dinner. If you are going to drop off in the morning, send breakfast for your pet. It gives them something to do when they get there. If your pet’s training includes sit and wait for the eat command, let the staff know. That way, we can make sure to keep that going.
6 Communicate with the staff if there are any concerns.
COVID PUPPY TIPS: While I’m not a fan of this new term, it is out there. If you were home with your pup or got a new dog during 2020 AND weren’t able to keep them social, your dog may need to be trained out of their separation anxiety. If your dog is stressing out every time you leave the house, you need to spend a day or two showing them that they are okay to be home alone. When you walk out the door, don’t say anything to them. They don’t understand the word goodbye. Wait a few seconds, walk back in and continue doing something, anything. If they’re crying or overly excited, DO NOT pay attention to them until they stop. Then reward their calm behavior. Keep doing this and adding how much time you re outside until they realize you will always come back and that they don’t get rewards (your attention) until they’re calm. 7 Make sure you can easily reach the facility and that they can easily reach you or an emergency contact. Someone you trust should be in contact with the facility if you or your pet become sick or injured
Even if you don’t need to board your dog regularly, you should have a place that you trust and that your dog knows, just in case. Friends and family won’t be available all the time and there’s nothing more stressful for you both than an

DO NOT change up their routine any more than necessary. 4 Bring a little comfort from home. SHE HAD SOME HORSES… Written by Heidi Bradbury Heidi Bradbury is an Ojai artist, with her studio perfectly located within her barn on Hang ‘em High Ranch, owned with her husband, Mike. Over the years this barn has been filled with magnificent horses, ranging from quarters, to Arabians, to warm bloods. Each have given their heart and soul, as they’ve progressed in areas of rein-cow horse, dressage, western pleasure, jumping and more… Several of these loving animals taught young children to ride and, and more importantly respect their willingness to give so generously… Heidi emphasizes the dance you can achieve with your horse when trust is achieved…
“Almost to the point of horses becoming mind-readers”… She states, “I’m lucky enough to have experienced that dance. It’s pure magic.” Her art has transformed from detailed landscapes, to a need to capture that magic she attributes to each and every equine she owns now… and has bidden farewell to in the past… “They are buried on the ranch,” she says… “Their spirit lives on with us here”. “Just the thought of each one that has passed, the joy they brought us, brings tears”…

MEMORIALIZATION: HOW DO I HONOR AND REMEMBER MY ANIMAL COMPANION? Written by Christine Ogorsolka Johnson With Eden Memorial Care

MEMORIAL PET CARE
N
ow that my friend is gone- how do I move forward and honor their memory? Many people don’t realize that there are many options on how to memorialize the ones they love and have lost in death. Going through the stages of grief will come directly and will be different for each individual. What people don’t talk about is what happens once they reach the acceptance of their companion’s death. Should I just forget and move on? Or should I memorialize them in a special way? At some time you have probably seen or read the information on the 5 Steps of Grief: Shock (Denial), Anger, Spiritual Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. When talking about grief and loss, you will hear this a lot. Knowing and understanding the stages may help you understand what you are going through; but the actual act of going through it can be crippling. Let’s be honest, it can feel like your heart has been torn from your chest. No one talks about that or how the feeling of numbness can take over your body for days or weeks. Grief is strictly
individual and the number one thing to remind yourself when you are going through it is that it’s acceptable to feel and grieve. A popular concern among our clients is that they feel guilty for grieving so hard for a pet. Maybe they even felt loss more than for a human family member or friend that passed away. Pets are our family and the fact that they provide us with such unconditional love brings us that much closer to them. Find people, who have been through grief, to support you. Help yourself by working through each stage and finding positive ways to remember your beloved. One extremely helpful process is that of memorialization. To memorialize is to commemorate or to present a memorial/ honor to something. I have seen this to be one of the most effective and helpful processes when someone has lost a pet. “Time will heal”—chiché or not, is so true. But now what? You are getting through the “stages of grief ” and whether you are doing well or having a difficult time an important question to ask yourself is, How do I want to remember my beloved pet? Each person and every pet is different. Remember, it’s what feels right to you at that time. For us horse people, a question you may want to ask is: What momento would I like to have or did I save before their death? What are my options in memorializing him/ her? Many people don’t realize that they do have choices with many beautiful and tasteful options to remember their horse: Hoof Prints, saving horseshoes, photo boxes or urns, and most popular—
jewelry, key chains, or display tassels made of a section of your horses mane or tail. Maybe keeping their horse shoes or a section of their mane or tail was too hard to bare at the time of loss; but now would be a wonderful item to remember them by. Everyone is an individual and wants to remember in different ways. MANAGING HORSES DURING HOT WEATHER Krishona Martinson, PhD Marcia Hathaway, PhD Christie Ward, DVM, PhD; University of Minnesota Roy Johnson, MS, Cargill Animal Nutrition Reprinted from University of Minnesota Extension Managing horses during hot weather can be a challenge for horse owners. Horse owners need to provide extra care during hot weather in order to decrease stress and maintain health and wellbeing of the horse. Normally, horses cool themselves by sweating. Evaporation of sweat from the skin surface has a cooling effect (Figure 1). A horse that is working hard in a hot environment can lose 2 to 4 gallons of sweat per hour. Less evaporation occurs during times of high humidity. Table 1 outlines how a horse's ability to cool itself is affected by air temperature and relative humidity. The thermal neutral zone for horses is estimated to be from about 40°F (5°C) to 77°F (25°F), with the lower temperature representing the lower critical temperature and the higher temperature representing the upper critical temperature. It is commonly understood that horses require more calories to stay warm during the winter months. While not much is known about the impact of temperatures above the upper critical temperature on caloric needs, metabolic changes in nutrient utilization do occur. In addition, heat
stress has a negative impact on feed intake, and most horses will not voluntary consume as much feedstuffs on hot days, similar to humans and other livestock. The change in metabolism, coupled with the likely reduced feed intake, can result in body weight loss, most specifically muscle protein. It is critical to track feed intake and body condition and weight during hot weather, especially for thin, older, and younger horses. If body condition or weight loss is observed, contact an equine nutritionist or veterinarian for assistance.
To help reduce the effects of heat and keep horses comfortable:
Fortunately, research has shown that horses can acclimate to hot and humid environments. A 15 to 21 day acclimation period is recommended for horses originating from cooler or drier climates that are traveling to compete or reside in hot, humid conditions. The acclimation period resulted in an increased tolerance to both heat and exercise. However, acclimation does not reduce the need for close monitoring of horses during training and competition in hot and humid environments.
• Provide turnout during cooler times of the day (early in the morning, late at night, or overnight). • Provide relief from the sun through access to shade from trees or buildings. Shade will change throughout the day and constructed buildings may block natural air flow.

• Ensure access to clean, cool (recommended temperature range of 45 to 64°F) water at all times. Depending on feed, an adult horse in a cool climate will normally drink 6 to 10 gallons of water each day while at rest, and much more while working or in hot conditions.
• Watch for signs of sunburn, especially on white or light-colored areas; use masks and ensure access to shade.
• Water buckets and tanks may need to be cleaned more regularly in hot weather as algae and bacteria grow rapidly in warm water. Blue algae toxicity (which affects horses, pets, and other livestock) is more common in ponds or slow running streams during hot, dry weather.
• Fans help to improve airflow; be sure to keep cords and plugs out of the horses reach to prevent

to overheating, especially if horses are out of shape and have long, thick coats. length; heat stress can affect any horse but is especially common in older, obese and out of condition horses. Young foals also tend to be more prone to heat stress and dehydration. Clip horses with long hair coats (i.e. horses with Cushing's disease) to enhance cooling. • Transport horses during the coolest part of the day. Ensure that trailers are well ventilated and offer water frequently. Do not park in direct sunlight with horses inside. • Horses with anhidrosis have little or no ability to produce sweat; these horses are prime candidates for heat stress. It is recommended to avoid riding a horse when the combined temperature and relative humidity surpass 150 (Table 1). If a horse must be ridden during hot and humid weather, or you live in an area where hot and humid weather is prevalent, it is essential to: • Adjust your schedule (ride early in the morning or late at night). • Keep the work light and include frequent breaks that allow the horse to cool down and regain a normal respiratory rate. Do not work the horse beyond its fitness level. • Watch for normal sweating. • Create airflow (use fans) and work the horse in shade when possible. • Provide access to cool, clean water at all times and offer water frequently during work. There is no reason to withhold water from a hot horse. • Call a veterinarian immediately if your horse stops producing sweat, breathes heavily, or becomes lethargic, distressed or uncoordinated. To cool an overheated horse (rectal temperature exceeding 103°F), spray or sponge the horse's head, back,
neck, rump, and legs with cool water and immediately scrape the water off, repeating continuously until the horse is cool (Figure 2). This is an effective cooling method because heat is transferred from the horse's muscles and skin to the water, which is then removed to cool the horse. It is critical to scrape the warmed water off immediately, or the water may serve as insulation and might actually increase the horse's body temperature. Adding ice to the water will increase the speed of cooling for very hot horses with rectal temperature exceeding 105°F. Although some believe adding ice will “shock” a hot horse, research has shown that using ice to cool a horse is safe. Ice baths have been found to reduce core body temperature and lower heart rates after intense exercise, and horses were also observed trotting more freely after an ice bath. If a horse is prone to tying up, do not directly apply ice water to the large gluteal muscles in the hind end, but focus on areas where blood vessels are more superficial (i.e. head, neck, back and rib area). Finally, do not place a sheet or blanket on the horse while trying to cool it. Blanketing will block the evaporation of water from the skin and is not recommended during hot and humid conditions. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can result in heat stress, heat stroke, and complications such as dehydration, muscle spasms, and colic. Overheating can result from hot weather, high humidity, poor barn ventilation, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive work, transportation, or obesity. Signs of heat stress include a rectal temperature greater than 103°F, increased heart and respiration rates, profuse sweating, droopy ears, signs of fatigue, and dehydration with a prolonged skin tent of several seconds when the skin of the neck or shoulders is pinched (Figure 3). Horses worked hard in extreme heat and/or humidity may go on to develop signs of heat stroke, a very continued on page 22

Signs of heat stroke include rapid heart and respiratory rates that do not drop within 20 minutes of stopping exercise (Table 2), whinnying and distress, marked dehydration with dry mucous membranes and a prolonged skin tent of 4 to 10 seconds, marked muscle weakness, incoordination, and collapse. Horses suffering from heat stress and
heat stroke require immediate cooling. Heat stroke is an emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention. Treatment includes stopping all exercise, getting the horse out of the sun, using fans, spraying and scraping ice water to cool the horse, providing cool, clean water, and making electrolytes available. Horses with heat stroke often require treatment with intravenous fluids and electrolytes to restore hydration and normalize blood chemistry.
Some believe that horses should not be allowed to drink unrestricted amounts of water when hot due to hyper-distension of the stomach leading to colic. A horse’s stomach can hold between 2 and 4 gallons of fluid without becoming excessively distended. Allowing a hot horse a few swallows of cool, clean fresh water every few minutes is necessary to combat the effects of heat stress. Also, some believe that a draft will make a wet horse susceptible to a “chill” during

hot weather. Fans (or natural air flow) work to increase evaporation and speed the cooling process. More effective are misting fans; misting is commonly used in the livestock industry to speed cooling in geographic areas affected by high temperatures. ENGLISH DISCIPLINE HORSE SHOWS RETURNS TO THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY EQUESTRIAN CENTER Written by Carole Bennett

It all started years ago when we took over the reins (another no pun intended) from the group that put on the schooling shows in Santa Barbara at the Modoc riding ring. We were fortunate to add a few shows in the Santa Ynez Valley and eventually all the shows are now held there.
At 7:30 in the morning on Sunday, October 7th 2018 as the fog was slowly lifting, the first trailer pulled into the parking lot of the Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center (SYVEC). Two beautiful grey horses had their heads hanging out the windows and tears slowly rolled down my cheeks. It was true…if you build it, they will come. A long dream of mine was becoming a reality before my eyes! My name is Carole Bennett and my husband Alain and I are privileged to have a business called “On The Bit” where we mount (no pun intended) dressage schooling shows and “ride a

In another ring, we have introduced a casual jumping forum where two hour blocks of time are given to those who wish to jump. It is not a judged event, but a judge does offer commentary after the round to the rider if they wish to hear it. The jumps range in heights from cross rails to 3 feet. With each show we have seen more Junior riders participate and now we invite riders from the Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding center to join us as well in a special class.

The ABCA built the Civic Center in 1962 to provide a place for community, social, and recreational events and renamed it the Avila Beach Community Center in 2004. The Community Center underwent a major renovation in 2007 with funds from the Avila Beach Community Foundation and San Luis Obispo County and now serves as a focal point for a variety of recreational, educational, and social activities for Avila Beach and the surrounding area. The funds raised will enable the ABCA to provide many programs beneficial to community members and visitors to Avila Beach. We hope to return to our full array of programs over the next few months. These include Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, Gentle Yoga classes by San Luis Coastal Adult School, and a Creative Cooking class with Julie Andrews-Scott, Manager of the Avila Beach Farmers Market, through Cuesta Emeritus College. We hope to have the “Lifetree Cafe” by Peace Lutheran Church return as well as other activities and community meetings. We are also available for rental of the Community Center for weddings, parties, conferences, and other special events.

We are excited to share Elite Pup Training has relocated to the esteemed Sam’s Doggie Dude Ranch in Goleta, CA. We are elated to partner with such wonderful people and to call the ranch home for Elite Pup Training. The ranch is located on the pristine Gaviota coast nestled between El Capitan State Beach and Refugio State Beach, where the temperatures are always cool and pleasant. The best part, we are COVID19 compliant. The setting is hard to beat; an oceanfront ranch with multiple secure areas for training and play, miles of trails with watering holes, farm animals, horses, and wildlife. Our boarding facilities have recently been remodeled including separate cabins, bunks, and dog houses to accommodate our canine guests. Our overnight guests have a private doghouse that is fully insulated – the floors, the walls, and the ceiling to keep the boarders warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Each doghouse’s

private yard is fully caged separately for safety including roof fence to know they are perfectly safe and secure. Our compound perimeter fencing is 6ft tall with an extra foot of wire at the top making it 7 feet tall. In the ground around the entire perimeter is an 8-inchwide by 18-inch-deep solid concrete wall down into the ground so no one can dig out. We also have a caretaker who spends the night onsite. The dogs eat in their private area and are then released for supervised play and training in a large yard completely enclosed. The openair training arena, provides a very large space for our session training ensuring social distancing compliance and the ability to work with our session clients not only in the arena but on trails with distractions and room to run. So, how does this work? We are two dog businesses, one focused on boarding and one on training with boarding programs. Sam’s Doggie Dude Ranch It is exclusively for overnight boarding. Elite Pup Training is dog training with overnight boarding as part of some of our training programs. Sam’s Doggie Dude Ranch, a 14-yearold business, provides more of a doggie Disneyland than a boarding kennel, allowing your dog to be the country dog he always dreamed of being. When dogs board with SDDR, they have the opportunity with owner’s approval after

REDWINGS HORSE SANCTUARY FINDS FOREVER HOME Written by Linelle Soxman
Redwings Horse Sanctuary, a 501(c)3 nonprofit horse rescue, was founded in 1991 in Carmel, CA. by a group of women passionate about the plight of abused, abandoned and neglected equines. The group had early support from Congressman Sam Farr, and their first rescue, a thoroughbred called “Island Fighter” was renamed “Sam” in his honor. The sanctuary was forced to relocate from it’s initial location, due to proposed redevelopment of the Carmel site, in 1999. After a lengthy search across California and Oregon, a former board member purchased 167 acres in rural Lockwood, CA, and kindly leased the ranch back to Redwings. The horses moved to the Lockwood ranch in 2000. The dream of any sanctuary is to have a permanent home, and that dream started to become a reality for Redwings in 2015. A generous donor left a trust bequest that allowed Redwings to purchase 141 acres, located at 6875 Union Road in Paso Robles. The property had formerly been a pistachio farm, and, as pistachios can be toxic to horses, all the remaining trees had to be removed. Fencing, creating pastures, digging wells, final permitting for the office, barns, and outbuildings followed. Construction eventually began, and finally, in April, 2021, the first group of Redwing’s current 70+ equines moved to their new forever home. “The new location gives us a lot more exposure and opportunities to educate people about why we are here, what we do and why there is a need”, says Sara Ruggerone, Equine Care Manager. Redwings offers guided public tours by appointment, volunteer opportunities with the horses, and, a unique Equine Adoption Program. The Adoption Program aims to find the best forever home. Adopted-out horses can range from companion animals to horses suitable for a variety of riding styles.

Many of our highly adoptable horses come from a separate Redwings program as an accredited AfterCare Facility for retired California racing thoroughbreds. We are accredited through TAA
Redwing’s new permanent location in the popular wine tourism area of Paso Robles will allow the sanctuary to expand their programs. The Sanctuary plans to offer educational outreach to local schools, and to host groups such as 4-H, Scouts and FFA. Offering Internships is a goal, as is partnering with the animal science department and students at Cal Poly in nearby San Luis Obispo. The long-term wish list includes certification and programs in therapeutic riding and/ or equine-assisted therapy. Redwings has an ongoing Capital Fundraising Campaign, with the goal of raising $1 million to help pay for the construction of the new permanent sanctuary. Donating to the campaign will help pay for fencing, pastures, the office building, hay barn, the mare motels, as well as continuing care for the horses. get too caught up in the “whatifs,” you may set your sights too high and set an unrealistic price. This will mean your home sits on the market longer and can cost more money in the long-run. Don’t hide major problems A good home inspector will find out all of the issues with your home anyway. Not being forthcoming about known issues will slow the whole process down. You don’t want to have an offer on the table that doesn’t work out because you’ve failed to disclose something or because inspection uncovered something huge. The Herman Bennett Foundation is a private 501(c) 3 non-profit organization helping qualified low-income pet owners spay and neuter their cats and dogs. Our Feral Cat Program provides vouchers for spaying or neutering feral cats. We have expanded our operations to include: the support of Military/Service Dogs who are in need of Medical Assistance (not covered by any agency); No-Kill Animal Shelters that specialize in Feral Cat spaying/neutering; and Animal Rescue Groups that provide homes for cats and dogs through ADOPTION, rather than euthanasia. Spaying and neutering plays a major role in helping CONTROL the animal OVER population and prevents the needless death of cats and dogs. The second factor in helping to support the spay and neuter is EDUCATION to answer the question, WHY is this important? We attend community functions to reach out and educate people about the importance of spaying and neutering their cats and dogs. Mr. Bennett was a sales representative in the garment industry for years, served in the Military, never married, and dedicated his life to saving his earnings to develop and purchase many assets to fulfill his dream of ending the pet overpopulation problem. The major change for 2021 from previous years is no PBR – Professional Bulling Riding – Thursday night nor PRCA – Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association – performances Friday and Saturday evening plus Sunday afternoon.

Friday August 6th will start off with a series of seven stock horse classes starting at 9 AM followed by junior barrel racing at 5 PM in the Dome Arena. Friday afternoon at 2 PM, we will have a series of junior events in the Mountain View Arena including pole bending & keyhole. Nothing planned for the evening unless events run late. Saturday August 7th, we start at 8 AM in the Dome arena with “old timers” roping followed by the #8 & #5 team ropings which a person can enter twice this year. At 1 PM, we start the junior roping events including team roping, break-away and new for 21021, a mixed ribbon roping. Sunday morning August 8th, we have team penning and team sporting in the Dome Arena and you are allowed to enter twice this year in both events as long as you change several team

members. We have no time constraint as we have no afternoon performance to have the arena and grandstands opened and prepped for. Horse show events will take place in the Mountain View Arena both Saturday and Sunday. Classes include ranch horse confirmation, cowboy ranch trail, cowboy ranch riding and reining classes. The other big change this year has been the refurbishment of the Mountain View Arena and Dome Arena. The Dome Arena floor is several feet lower. Both arenas have brand new footing and have been laser leveled with the Mountain View Arena getting new railing around the outside as well. In addition, several barns have been removed on the mountain side of the Showgrounds against the golf course and Adams school. We will use this area for the stock pens for cattle used in competition and other events throughout the year will use the area as a warmup arena. Warren. Well over a half million has been spent refurbishing some of the horse facilities all paid via donations. Karen Christiansen has been the lead person on the ground. Karen has done a great job with several contractors, taking care of hidden issues that have cropped up like sewer lines in unknown locations and really turned the facility back in to first class arenas. She is to be thanked for
all her volunteer time, effort, guidance, and expertise in seeing the rehabilitation through. As stated up front, no paid performances or ticket sales this year. Events are open to the public and admittance is free. So stop by during the day Friday August 6th, Saturday August 7th and Sunday August 8th and enjoy seeing contestants

(Simi Valley) Animal Rescue Volunteers (ARV), a local non-profit rescue group, will be hosting a VIRTUAL Wag ‘n Walk event (charity dog walk), Saturday, September 25, 2021. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the annual in-person event will not be taking place. Instead, ARV will host a VIRTUAL Wag 'n Walk event to help raise much-needed funds to continue to cover medical and food costs to support their efforts in saving and rescuing dogs in our community. The fundraising campaign will continue now through October 31, 2021. ARV accepts donations throughout the year; however, the Wag 'n Walk event is our major yearly campaign that gathers the

Who is "SLO CDS"?
The San Luis Obispo Chapter of the California Dressage Society began in 1976 with about 15 charter members, several of whom are still members. Today our chapter has 130 members. The California Dressage Society was founded in 1967 with 20 members and today has over 6,000 members with 36 chapters around the state. The local chapter hosts several shows and educational forums each year. Our chapter meetings are held ever other month in Atascadero and San Luis Obispo. Each show requires the donated time of dozens of volunteers who keep score, hand out ribbons, supervise the warm-up arenas, etc. Many are area horse people who just enjoy watching horses doing interesting patterns.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the annual in-person event will notbe taking place. Instead, ARV will host a VIRTUAL Wag ‘n Walk event to help raise much-needed funds to continue to cover medical and food costs to support their efforts in saving and rescuing dogs in our community. The fundraising campaign will continue now through October 31, 2021. ARV accepts donations throughout the year; however, the Wag ‘n Walk event
is ourmajor yearly campaign that gathers the funds needed to continue their efforts.Those interested in participating in this year’s VIRTUAL Wag ‘n Walk can sign up for Free atwww.arvsimi.org. Participants are encouraged to raise funds by creating a fundraising page or print out a pledge form to collect donations. For each $100 raised, walkers will receive one free raffle entry.
