A LETTER FROM THE Executive Director

Dear IHSA members, coaches, parents, sponsors, supporters and friends,

Congratulations to all the riders and teams who have navigated the regular season and competitive post-season to earn the opportunity to compete here at the IHSA Nationals. We are thrilled to welcome teams from all over North America to the Kentucky Horse Park.

Riders, you should be proud of your accomplishments and I encourage you to take this opportunity to introduce yourselves to your fellow competitors on other teams. You will discover that we all share a common bond of the love of horses and equestrian sport and are all dedicated to good sportsmanship.

The IHSA and this event would not be successful without the army of volunteers working year-round to ensure everything comes together. Our volunteer board of directors works with steadfast dedication to the mission of the IHSA. We are so grateful for their significant contributions of time and expertise.

Thank you to all the schools and individuals providing horses for Nationals because competition would not be possible without them. Members, please take the time to thank our horse providers. Make sure to thank the horse you ride with a pat and remember, that provider is rooting for their horse, even if you are on opposing teams!

We are grateful to our sponsors, particularly the ones that have come on recently and at high levels, especially, Back on Track and CWD. Likewise, IHSA individual competitors and teams are grateful for the commitment to recognize their accomplishments. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationships in the future.

Many thanks to our equestrian community and the governing bodies that support our mission to provide equestrian opportunities to college students of all walks of life and all levels - USHJA, NRHA, AQHA, APHA and NSBA.

Join us in recognizing two individuals who have and continue to play essential roles within the IHSALifetime Achievement Award recipient Eleanor Ellis and our Pioneer Award honoree, Lisa Bailey Cassidy. Are you graduating and looking to start your career? Don't miss out on Friday's career fair, sponsored by the USHJA. The organizations and businesses participating are interested in IHSA members. This is going to be a great event!

Be sure to visit all our vendors and sponsors who support the IHSA throughout the year. Good luck this week and enjoy this wonderful time together!

Sincerely,

History of the INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOWS ASSOCIATION

The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association was established in 1967 by Robert “Bob” Cacchione while he was an 18-year-old sophomore attending Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. Cacchione developed the prototype competition program with the help of his professor and renowned horseman, Jack Fritz.

Some of the most notable riders in show jumping and the Western disciplines competed in the IHSA during their college years. Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden competed for Southern Seminary and won the Cacchione Cup in 1984. Olympic gold medalist Peter Wylde won the Cacchione Cup in 1986 while he attended Tufts University.

Launched with just two colleges competing in hunter seat equitation, the IHSA was praised for its competition format and quickly caught on. In 1979 the Western divisions premiered at the IHSA National Championship Horse Show (Nationals). In 1999 IHSA Inc. was established as a nonprofit organization.

The early shows were judged by great horsemen, like Frank Chapot and Michael Page. Originally, Nationals were held at various college facilities but are now held at major equestrian competition venues.

About the INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOWS ASSOCIATION

The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) welcomes members of all genders and riding levels and offers individual and team competition in hunter seat equitation, Western horsemanship, ranch riding and reining at more than 400 member colleges and universities. Founded in 1967, it is the oldest and largest intercollegiate equestrian organization with 10,000 members in 47 states and Canada.

IHSA college and university team participation is represented through a variety of programs including varsity athletics, academic departments and club sports.

Membership in IHSA means that college students can compete at horse shows regardless of their experience or financial status. Students compete in beginner through advanced divisions with suitable, provided horses, eliminating the expense of horse ownership and much of the related costs of the sport. Through the Intercollegiate Equestrian Foundation (IEF), IHSA members are eligible for multiple need and merit-based scholarships.

Members compete to qualify for IHSA Regional Finals. The top riders and teams at Regionals advance to the IHSA Zone Finals (hunter seat) or Semi-Finals (Western). The top competitors and teams at Zone Finals and Semi-Finals qualify for the annual IHSA National Championship Horse Show.

Hunter Seat High Point Rider, Presenting the Cacchione Cup, IHSA Open-level riders are eligible to compete for the Hunter Seat High Point Rider, Presenting the Cacchione Cup, and the Back on Track Western High Point Rider titles. Qualified teams compete for the Hunter Seat Team and Western Team Championship honors.

IHSA offers valuable hands-on experience and professional development in multiple facets of the equine industry. Many IHSA teams participate in service projects, giving back to their communities. Through the IHSA, students enhance their college experience and develop the tools that help to build successful careers.

IHSA Senior Athletic Academic Achievement Award Essay Winner 2023

DOMINIQUE PALKA, the University of Central Florida

During the past two years, I have participated in numerous IHSA competitions, and I can attest that these competitions have helped me develop several qualities that have benefited me at the University of Central Florida and will help in my future career as an attorney. Competing in IHSA requires discipline, resilience, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

As a competitor, I have had to be disciplined in not only my training, but also my overall approach to the sport. This discipline has translated into my academic life, where I have learned to be more structured in my study habits and time management. Last year, not only was I preparing for the regional competition with semi-finals only one week after, but I was also in the beginning stages of studying for my LSAT while in the middle of mid-term week. This fall, I will begin my first year of law school where this discipline will help me stay focused on achieving my goals and remain committed to achieving them.

Another quality IHSA competitions have taught me is resilience. I know I can perform well on my own horse, but it is the unpredictability of getting on a new horse that can be nerve racking. There have been times that I have not achieved the results I was aiming for, but I have learned from my mistakes and continued to work toward my goals. This resilience has been influential in my academic life, where I must handle setbacks, failures and challenges with grace and determination. This resilience will continue helping me throughout my life.

Teamwork is one of the biggest qualities I have learned from IHSA. Through these competitions, I have learned how to communicate effectively with the horse I am given, work collaboratively as co-captain with my coaches and teammates and support others during competitions. At the University of Central Florida, there are many opportunities for collaborating with classmates and communicating my ideas clearly. In my future career, teamwork will help me work effectively with my colleagues and collaborate on cases.

Finally, IHSA competitions have helped me develop critical thinking skills. The competitions require split-second decision making, quick analysis of situations, and adjustments to the approach accordingly. In competitions, I have been on horses ranging from sensitive, lazy, green, or anticipatory. Being able to determine the type of horse you are on gives you the advantage you need to perform well. This type of critical thinking will translate into my future by allowing me to analyze complex legal issues, consider various perspectives and make sound arguments.

Being on the University of Central Florida IHSA team has taught me many qualities that have benefited me in my academic years and will certainly contribute to future successes. From discipline, resilience, teamwork and critical thinking, these qualities have helped me become a more well-rounded individual, and I know they will continue to serve me in my legal career as well.

ELEANOR ELLIS PRESENTED WITH IHSA ELEANOR ELLIS PRESENTED WITH IHSA

Lifetime Achievement Award Lifetime Achievement Award

At the IHSA board meeting in January 2023, Eleanor Ellis was honored with the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award and added to a list of distinguished equestrians who have dedicated their time and talents to the IHSA.

"Eleanor has given so much to the IHSA," IHSA Executive Director Peter Cashman said. "She has rolled up her sleeves, done the work, and put in so much of her time. We are honored to work with her and so pleased to award her with the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award."

Ellis is from Savannah, Georgia, near where she lives now. She got involved with horses at age 6 when her older sister gave her a Shetland pony. Somehow, they got away with not telling her parents for six months. When her parents got on board, they used to transport the pony in the back seat of the family station wagon.

Ellis attended Randolph College (formerly Randolph Women's College), where she was introduced to the greater depth of the horse industry. "I was a little barn rat that just wanted to know everything about everything," Ellis said. "I was fascinated by the production of horse shows and helped out doing that."

At Randolph Macon, Ellis got to ride fabulous Virginia-area horses. The program included foxhunting, hunter paces and competing in the IHSA. "I had a backyard horse growing up that I had a lot of success with, but he was what he was," she said. "It was a different world! We got to do so many things that really helped me as a horseman."

In 1983, Ellis' senior year, the talented rider qualified and competed at the IHSA National Championship Horse Show in the Open division. "I remember meeting Bob Cacchione and understanding the scope of it all," Ellis said.

After graduation, she worked briefly at a farm in Charleston, South Carolina, then spent 10 years in the corporate world with International Paper. During her career at International Paper, Ellis served on several boards. She says she still calls on those experiences in her volunteer IHSA work today.

In 1992, Ellis bought her Evermore Farm and began helping Georgia Southern University and other region teams by loaning horses for shows. When Georgia Southern was ready to make a coaching change in 1998, they reached out to Ellis. She has been coaching the IHSA team and teaching their physical education riding classes ever since.

Ellis has served as an active contributor on the IHSA board since 2001. "I've been on the marketing, realignment, and hunter seat committees and helped run the IHSA National Championship Horse Show as the barn manager for five years," Ellis said. "We all keep saying, 'yes,' because that's what we do."

Saying "yes," in a volunteer organization like the IHSA has put Ellis in the middle of change and improvements. She does it quietly. "I consider myself a behind-the-scenes person," she said. And she's inspired by her students. "It's just staggering to me watching these college kids come through from freshmen to seniors and watch the changes in them."

For Ellis, it's the horses that make the IHSA happen. "Without them, you know, it doesn't happen. And it takes a special horse. During Nationals, to think that we can put 16 or 18, or however many we need in the ring at one time at the same level–and they're all quite nice horses. Wow!"

Honored with

Pioneer Award

The IHSA Pioneer Award recognizes those who have developed collegiate riding programs and opportunities. The 2023 recipient is Lisa Bailey Cassidy, an alumna, former coach and board member of the Intercollegiate Equestrian Foundation (IEF).

Cassidy grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, discovered horses at 3 and became obsessed. At 10, she was one of the youngest members of the Rolling Rock Hunt Club. She competed in A-rated shows in the hunters and jumpers throughout her junior years, training with Carol Maloney, Peter Lombardo and Ronnie Mutch. She quit riding when she attended Stetson College in Florida, but reignited her passion when she transferred to Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she was recruited to ride on their equestrian team. Cassidy rode part of her junior, all senior year and as an alumna qualifying for Regionals and Nationals. Upon graduation, Cassidy took the reins as head coach of the Sarah Lawrence team for six years. When she moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, her friend, Bob Cacchione, the founder of the IHSA, encouraged her to form a new team at Fairfield University.

"I called the university and (asked), what about an equestrian team?" Cassidy explained. "They said it can't be (considered) a team. It's got to be a special interest group."

The university leadership offered Cassidy only one meeting to find out if there was

interest in forming a team. "I put the flyer out and 12 people showed up and the Fairfield University Equestrian Team was born. We went from a special interest group in 1992, to a club sport by 1994."

"We were featured on ESPN and in an article in the New York Times," Cassidy said.

"This group at Fairfield was energized to make this happen. And we all were just in sync. We grew to 35-plus riders."

In 1996, Fairfield University Equestrian Team was the region champion team, defeating George Lukemire and Joan Johnson's SUNY Stonybrook team, who had won the trophy for 28 years, according to Cassidy. As a result, the Fairfield University Equestrian Team earned a slot to compete at

the 1996 IHSA National Championship Horse Show in Los Angeles. Despite the competition, she, Johnson and Lukemire became great friends. Cassidy continued her success, leading the Fairfield University Equestrian Team to Regional Championships and the IHSA National Championship Horse Show each year and fielding 12 Cacchione Cup contenders.

"Riding, teaching, developing new riders and new teachers was a huge part of my life," she said. "Many of my kids are top people in the horse industry."

Cassidy served on the IHSA board of directors as a regional president for many years, volunteering her time alongside her fellow coaches.

For many years, Johnson essentially ran the IEF, an organization that provides grants and scholarships for collegiate riders. Johnson encouraged Cassidy to become involved and she was instrumental in helping create the IEF's 501 (c) (3) status. When Johnson passed away in 2004, Cassidy took over the IEF stewardship "She knew I really cared about giving back to the kids that were working hard and putting time into their applications," Cassidy said. "I've been reading applications since 2004, right up to this year."

What does Cassidy look for in applications? "I look for the person who exhibits the camaraderie of the IHSA and gives back in college and submits a nicely written essay," she said. "I love reading them. There have been some incredible essays.

When they highlight the spirit of the IHSA, they usually move to the top. The Joan Johnson Memorial Scholarship means everything to me."

Cassidy says she is most proud of generating spirit and sportsmanship with her team during her coaching days. With her work for the IEF, she says she lives vicariously through the spirit that IHSA coaches are building with their teams.

"Like many students, the IHSA changed my life," Cassidy said.

Cassidy is married, has a son, and lives on her family ranch, Cassiranch, in Cody, Wyoming.

"We are so grateful for the incredible contribution Lisa has made to the IHSA and IEF," IHSA Executive Director Peter Cashman said. "Her energy, spirit and significant impact embodies all that is the IHSA."

Teamwork divides

As professional riding instructors and coaches, we know how challenging it can be keeping youth riders engaged year-round when their peers are off playing “traditional” sports and gaining recognition for their success in school activities.

For over 21 years, the INTERSCHOLASTIC EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION (IEA) has witnessed the power of team mentality in the equine industry. Instructors who turn lesson students into equestrian team members at the middle and high school levels not only see improved riding abilities, but also more barn camaraderie, growth in responsibility, added revenue streams, and increased enthusiasm for collegiate riding. Youth athletes competing on draw-based IEA teams participate in equestrian sport at an affordable cost while learning important horsemanship, team-building and life skills. Regardless of their ability level, every team member can earn points and play an important role in the success of their IEA team.

With more than 14,600 IEA members nationwide, that’s alot of teamwork happening!

Are you aware that a significant number of IHSA coaches also coach an IEA team? Nearly 20% by our last count. You understand the power of teamwork in getting to National Finals and what it takes to sustain a successful equestrian team. We invite you to join your colleagues and start an IEA Hunt Seat, Western or Dressage team for riders in grades 4-12 for the 2023-2024 IEA Season. Membership opens in June with shows beginning in August.

IHSA HUNTER SEAT HIGH POINT RIDER, PRESENTING THE CACCIONE CUP REGIONAL HIGH POINT RIDERS

The IHSA would like to recognize the achievements of all of the Hunter Seat High Point Rider, Presenting the Cacchione Cup, Regional High Point riders from across the U.S. and Canada. These riders competed all year, against solid competition within their region, to earn the title of Regional High Point Rider, thereby qualifying for the Hunter Seat High Point Rider, Presenting the Cacchione Cup, Qualifying Class at their respective Zone Finals. While some of their journeys ended at the Zone Finals, this does not minimize their accomplishments for they represent some of the best open riders within the association.

Congratulations on your success this year and we look forward to seeing you in the ring in the future.
