As I write my first president’s message to the AHS membership, I am filled with excitement for this new role, but also for where the Society stands and the potential that I see moving forward. In the recent years, we’ve faced significant hurdles: the COVID pandemic, an uncertain economy, and staffing changes. Despite these challenges, the organization is thriving, thanks to our fantastic volunteer base, united board of directors, and hard-working staff.
I am fortunate to move into this position after Edgar Schutte’s 12 years as our president. Under Edgar’s leadership, the AHS adopted the Rhineland Studbook and led efforts to create the North American Stallion Sport Test. Edgar was also instrumental in developing our Yearling and Two-Year-Old Futurity. Edgar will remain on the AHS Board. Thank you, Edgar, for making the AHS
a stronger and more memberfocused society under your tenure!
In the first months of this year, we’ve accomplished a lot! In January, we held our first in-person Annual Meeting since 2020. The AGM committee put together a diverse panel of speakers, a tour of Helgstrand Dressage, and an evening watching Grand Prix show jumping at Wellington Equestrian Festival. We’ll return to Wellington for the next annual meeting on Feb. 16-18, 2024.
The Fundraising Committee has wrapped up an outstanding Stallion Service Auction. Thank you to the generous stallion owners who show their support of the AHS and the mare owners who make the bidding action exciting! These funds are critical to many of our activities.
The Editorial Committee has published our Stallion Directory which is now in full color! It has been mailed to our Active and Lifetime members and is available to everyone online. The Mare Awards moved to the Awards Magazine – where now we highlight our horses’ achievements in both sport and breeding.
More than 50 inspection dates are scheduled for 2023 and public sites are published online. The AHS continues to meet the growing demand for private inspections, video inspections, and the Rhineland auto-approval process as well. Christy Markowski is your go-to in the office for all questions related to registration and inspections. Ivy Pulliam, our
most recent hire, is coordinating all the tour details with our site hosts and judges.
We have excellent news for our members with Hanoverian- and Rhineland-approved mares from “outside” populations! Now these mares can receive the Premium Mare title if they meet all requirements including a 7 or higher at their inspection, a 7 or higher at their Mare Performance Test, and have produced a Hanoverian/Rhineland-registered foal. We can now recognize the best of the mares in our breeding population as Premium Mares, regardless of their birth registration papers.
The Jumper Breeding Program (JBP) committee is working on a new Star Awards system for mares in the JBP, based on some new changes in Germany too. Stay tuned for more information.
The Education Committee is continuing its popular podcast series in 2023. Did you know the AHS Podcasts rank in the Top 25% of all podcasts and have listeners worldwide? How cool is that!
All this has been accomplished in just three months. The strength of this Society has always rested with our membership. Please, reach out to share your thoughts and ideas as well. Let’s connect soon!
American Hanoverian Society, President Natalie DiBerardinisWhile they take time and a lot of effort to organize, inspections open to the public have benefits that far outweigh the work involved.
“Inspections get your name out there,” said Meg Williams, owner of Oakwood Farms, Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Meg has hosted inspections with the Hanoverian Society for more than 30 years.
In addition to increasing awareness of your business, inspections provide educational opportunities, showcase your horses, promote sales and create camaraderie.
Education is one of the most important factors with inspections. “The part I like best is when the inspection judges discuss conformation,” said Marie Caldwell, owner of the Hanoverian mare, D’Amore (Damsey x Rousseau/ Bordeaux). “I feel it helps train my eye on what to look for, plus how conformation affects movement and usefulness such as saddle position for keeping the saddle in place.”
Inspections also help provide a chance for breeders to share their experiences with each other. “We breeders can talk about what bloodlines are a good nick and what crosses improve certain characteristics,” said Meg. “It’s a great way to help us learn from each other.”
For both the public and breeder education, inspections provide a baseline for evaluating the horses equally, especially with the Mare Performance Test. “I’m impressed with the thought around maintaining the quality, type and longevity of the Hanoverian breed,” said Angela Genin, owner of the Hanoverian mare, Wicked Cute (Widmark x EM Emma/El Bundy), who has attended several inspections. “This is very apparent when the judges talk about what to watch for with certain lines and give feedback about
“It’s a great way to help us learn from each other.”
whether a factor in the lines are related to temperament or conformation,” said Meg.
Meg also has sold foals, broodmares and young mares under saddle as a result of awareness of her inspection and breeding operation – some have offered to purchase foals they’ve seen that day. For inspection sites that stand a stallion, it also gives the public a great opportunity to see the stallions and their offspring.
“Sometimes people attend inspections to check out foals to purchase,” said Meg. “I tell them if they come, they can see foals from many different sires out of many different broodmare lines, so they can see what several breeders are producing, all in one place.”
In spite of the work involved in hosting an inspection, Meg said they’re worth it. ”You see the babies all cleaned up and can see the difference between a foal that’s a few weeks old to one that’s a few months,” she said. “You can talk with the judges, which often means talking with a judge from the Hanoverian Verband. Best of all, you feel all of the enthusiasm for the horses. It’s really a lot of fun.”

During the summer and fall of 2022, the Society conducted one of its largest inspection tours ever at more than 47 public and private inspection sites across the United States. This year, 168 mares were inspected, with 134 mares entered into the Hanoverian Main Studbook and 15 into the Studbook. Additionally, 13 mares joined the Rhineland Main Studbook.
These are the top inspection mares of 2022, ranked by score.

For upgrade from the Studbook to the Main Studbook, Studbook mares must successfully complete their Performance Requirements. As a basis for upgrading a mare to a higher studbook or granting the title of Hanoverian Premium Mare, the following performance alternatives apply: 1) a mare performance test; or 2) performance in sport.
In 2022, Sweet Red’s Niece was the sole mare who achieved through performance an upgrade from Studbook to Main Studbook.
During the 2022 inspection tour, 86 Hanoverian mares were presented for approval in the Hanoverian studbook.
The average inspection score for these 36 champion Hanoverian mares was 7.20, with scores ranging from 6.66 to 8.0.

The Premium Mare Program is designed to identify the best Hanoverian and Rhineland broodmares for their respective studbooks. In 2022, the following 43 Hanoverian and two Rhineland daughters met the pedigree requirements and scored 7.0 or better upon inspection, thereby becoming Hanoverian or Rhineland Premium Eligible Mares.
Premium Eligible Mares that complete the Mare Performance Test (MPT) with a score of 7.0 or better become Premium Candidates. Once a Premium Candidate Mare has a Hanoverian- or Rhineland-registered foal, she will be awarded the title Premium Mare.

The Mare Performance Test assesses the rideability of mares and whether their talent lies in jumping or dressage.
The results of the test provide key evidence to allow informed breeding decisions and fulfills the sport requirements to achieve Premium Mare status. The Society has seen a significant rise in the number of mares completing the MPT in recent years. Most sites now offer the MPT. In 2022, a total of 39 mares participated in the MPT with 21 earning Hanoverian and Rhineland Premium Mare Candidate status. An additional five mares earned Premium Mare Candidate (HPMC/ RPMC) status through sport results in 2022.

There is much joy and satisfaction in having a horse in competition year after year. Let us consider the factors that keep a senior in the show arena.
Great genetics are foremost. Solid bone structure and great confirmation are part of the package of sound genetics.
The team of owner, trainer, farrier and veterinarian combine to support the senior competitor.
Diet cannot be overlooked in maintaining overall health and stamina. An exercise program to achieve and maintain optimum weight and endurance is critical. This is a scheduled part of the training in and out of the show season. Generous turnout time, six to eight hours a day, contribute to random activity and joint movement. Scheduled training provides specific areas of focus.
Veterinary evaluation on a periodic basis can identify movement and health issues that may require intervention.
A well-trained horse that is healthy and happy, combined with a sound mind, presents the basics for a competitor.
Add to this a love of work, a big heart and a great trainer, and you have the dance of a champion.
Regardless of your horse’s age, implementing proactive or preventative therapy can maximize your chances of success in the show ring. As your horse gets older, this approach becomes even more essential. Staying ahead of problems helps you to avoid frustrating interruptions in training, saves you money, and keeps your horse performing better for longer. In this article, we’ll highlight three basic strategies that will help to keep your equine partner in top competitive form for years to come.
As many of us know from personal experience, it is inherently easier to maintain body fitness than it is to attain it. Working your horse a minimum of 4-5 days per week will keep the muscles toned and the joints pliable, both for you and your athletic partner. The exercise doesn’t have to be intense, just consistent.
Regularly observing and riding your horse also affords the opportunity to detect small problems promptly, before they become big problems. Routine assessment is the basis of equine sports wellness, because it enables us to address issues during the “window of treatment opportunity,” a.k.a the phase when treatment will still be curative or at least highly effective.
Your farrier has the ability (and burden) of influencing your horse’s overall comfort and performance every 5-6 weeks (on average). Accordingly, the
amount of attention aimed at satisfying the following responsibilities (among others) directly affects how the horse will feel and move underneath you:
• Maintaining appropriate palmar and plantar angulation (PA) in the fore and hind feet, respectively. The PA represents the angle of the third phalanx (P3 or coffin bone) relative to the ground surface. Aberrant angles can impose excessive challenge to the flexor apparatus, the
suspensory apparatus, the distal (lower) joints of the limb, and the functionality of the stay apparatus (particularly in the hind end).
Summoning your veterinarian to acquire lateral radiographic images (x-ray) of the feet as needed may serve to provide your farrier with a blueprint off of which to work, thereby making it considerably easier to maintain optimal P3 angulation.
• Maintaining optimal medial-to-lateral foot balance. Foot imbalance not only alters load-bearing and breakover of the foot, it also disrupts loading and functionality of the distal (lower) joints within the respective limb. Regularly ensuring that the medial-tolateral balance of the foot and lower limb are optimal effectually amplifies your chances of keeping your horse sounder for longer. By acquiring dorsopalmar (or dorsoplantar) radiographic images of the feet, your veterinarian and farrier can accurately assess medial-tolateral balance and make physical adjustments as needed.
• Maintaining favorable breakover of the foot. The term breakover refers to the action of the hoof as it pivots over the toe to lift and moves the limb forward. The timing, speed, and pattern of foot breakover not only affects the flight path of the limb but the overall movement of the horse. Each horse’s ideal breakover is individually exclusive and best assessed while the horse is in motion.
• Accommodating for altered load bearing. The foot may encounter abnormal weightbearing loads depending on the positioning and deformation of the respective limb during the stance phase of the stride (load-
bearing). Your farrier may decide that the application of shoes is necessary to help reconcile these unnatural forces encountered by the hoof wall(s). In some instances, adjusting the width of a portion of the shoe (such as one of the branches) or applying frog pressure is necessary to counteract abnormal forces coming from above (i.e. higher up in the limb).
This form of therapy is designed to improve integrity and comfort associated with all of synovial structures in the horse.
Such synovial structures include joints, bursas, and tendon sheaths. So-called “joint supplements” have seen wide use among competitive equestrians, and are most often the horse owner’s first line of treatment for equine arthritis. The primary goal of the joint supplement is to stimulate normal activity and functionality of the synovial membrane(s) thereby enhancing the horse’s overall comfort and performance. Topical, oral, intravenous and intramuscular forms exist.
Preserving the comfort of your horse’s joints facilitates our first strategy (above) of maintaining a consistent work program. Your equine veterinarian will indubitably possess a wealth of knowledge in the field of systemic arthrotherapy, and it is therefore worth your time to broach the subject sooner rather than later.
Dr. Bob Grisel is the founder and CEO of The Atlanta Equine Clinic, an equine sports medicine practice accommodating an international clientele. In addition to writing numerous scientific articles and book chapters related to the fields of equine surgery and sports medicine, Dr. Grisel authored Equine Lameness for the Layman, a publication aimed at helping equestrians recognize and characterize performance problems in their horses.
The Engler-Friedlander Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Hanoverian mare that achieves the highest Mare Performance Test score during the annual inspections. The trophy honors the passing in 1998 of former Society President, Herman Friedlander, and long-time board member, Dr. Reto Engler, both who passed away in 1998. John and Tracy Weyl generously sponsor this trophy.
Grey C Top (Grey Top x Delightful/Drosselklang II) was destined to be a performance horse.
Carlos and Gabriela Fernandez of Barcelona Farms first saw the jumping talent in her half-sister – Coco Chanel (Contendro I x Delightful/Drosselklang II), who was a champion mare in Canada, earning a 9.75 in her jumping test.

“I really like the bloodline of her dam, Delightful, so I thought this time if I bred Delightful to Grey Top, the foal would be a taller, more modern type,” explained Carlos.
He was right. Grey C was top filly at her inspection and now she’s earned the Engler-Friedlander Memorial Trophy for the highest Mare Performance Test score. Their plan for
Gracie is to compete her on the jumper circuit and then add her to their breeding program.
This is the second time they’ve won this memorial trophy. Their first win was with HRH Real Emotions (Raphael Son II x Pagoda/ Prinz Gaylord).
Started in 2001, the Dr. Hartwig Memorial Trophy recognizes the North American-bred 3 or 4-year-old mare that has the best combined scores from her studbook inspection and her Mare Performance Test.
Freska GVF (Fuersten-Look x Shantilly Lace/Sandro Hit) is the result of careful planning of genetics and previous breedings.
Rebecca Lewison and Doug Palmer, owners of Grand View Farm, Barneveld, Wisconsin, bred Freska’s dam, Shantilly Lace, several times prior and knew what she produced. “She improved almost all the stallions we bred her to,” said Rebecca. “It helps to have mares that have been bred numerous times to see what traits demonstrate themselves.”

Rebecca’s husband, Doug, likes to study the genetic lines and make decisions about what could result in a good genetic cross. “Of course, nature has its own way, no matter what we think,” said Rebecca.
Freska has a consistent and reliable personality. “She hasn’t varied in temperament even through her cycles,” said Rebecca. “I never have to ponder, ‘What is she going to be like today?’ She also watches everything going on at the farm. She will talk from afar, with her head up, looking at you – and she expects an answer.”
When training started, she continued to prove how steady and even-keeled she is. “With ground work, she was very obedient,” explained Rebecca. “She was always ready for cavaletti work and just loves to jump.”
Freska is due to have a foal by So Perfect (Sezuan x Shakira/Sir Donnerhall) in late March and will probably be bred back to him.
“We started breeding seriously less than 10 years ago,” said Rebecca. “We only wish we had started earlier!”

The Bari von Buedingen Memorial Trophy, first awarded in 1994, is given to the highest scoring Hanoverian mare at an inspection. The trophy is awarded in memory of noted breeder, Bari von Buedingen, who with her husband, Dr. Richard von Buedingen, developed their top broodmare band at Graf Bae Farm.
Dr. Susan E. Heiken is the owner of Du Primera (Dubarry x Donatella/Don Primero), winner of the Bari von Buedingen Memorial Trophy with a top score of 8.0.
“Dolche is a beautiful, very intelligent and observant filly that is very connected to her people,” said Susan.
Purchased as a foal from Meg Williams of Oakwood Farms, Susan raised her since weaning. “Dolche is easy to train, tries really hard to do whatever is asked of her and loves attention!”
Dolche is currently at Meg Williams’ farm, being backed
and prepared for her Mare Performance Test (MPT). “I’m so excited to sit on her and begin her dressage training,” said Susan. “Dolche is the first to notice anything new, but follows my lead in how to respond, which is certainly a wonderful training characteristic.
“Dolche produced a lovely colt by the Grand Prix stallion, Don Nobless,” continued Susan. “Meg reports Dolche’s been a quick study with backing and loves her work.”
Susan’s goals for Dolche include successfully completing the MPT, then training and developing through the levels. “Thank you to the American Hanoverian Society for this award. We love being a member of such a professional, supportive and educational group of individuals.”

The Premonition BHF Perpetual Trophy goes each year to the highest placing Hanoverian in the hunter division. The award is named in honor of Premonition BHF
(Pablo-SPS Galaxis/Ganymed), the inaugural winner of this award in 2017.
Vintage Black (Blue Hors Zack x Homepage/Hochadel) joined the Precopio family when she was an adolescent 4-yearold, described as a “scrawny, spooky young horse” by her rider Megan Precopio, who began her relationship with her as a young rider at 13 years of age. “Mimi had a curiosity and hardworking attitude that made every ride fun and exciting,” reflected Megan.
“It took time for Mimi to grow into a horse that knows her job,” said Megan. After several years of consistent training and patience from her trainer, Matthew Jenkins, partnered with Megan’s dedicated efforts and riding, “Mimi has learned to balance and harness her
power with a lighter, relaxed way of going.” Bred to be a dressage horse, Mimi had started her under saddle career in Germany consistent with that breeding. Naturally, she had to then learn and adapt to the hunter style.
At 8-years-old, Mimi demonstrates exceptional promise for the hunter ring. “Mimi is very athletic and powerful, yet at the same time, she can be kind and gentle,”said Megan.
Her elegant gaits and athleticism brings grace and beauty to her jump, and she paints a beautiful picture in her stunning black coat, but for a few white hairs on her
Now Mimi has it all figured out, and Megan continues to reap the benefits of all this hard work. “Her willingness to do what is asked of her and hard-working attitude make her fun to ride in lessons and the show ring,” said Megan who cares for Mimi six days a week, year-round. “Mimi is truly a pleasure to care for.”
“Mimi is a beautiful jumper and able to make even a notso-perfect jump, look stylish and effortless,” said Megan’s mother, Liz. “It’s amazing to watch Megan and Mimi working together as a team and in sync with each other.”
With Matthew, Mimi has successfully shown her jumping ability, and this year was USEF Zone 2 Champion 3’6” Green Hunter. “Who knew a daughter of Olympic Grand Prix dressage stallion Blue Hors Zack would make such a wonderful hunter?” stated Matthew. “With time, and a great crew, all is possible!”
The Benchmark Farm Award is presented each year to the mare with the highest combined jumping score for both technique and ability in the Mare Performance Test. The Society’s North American Jumper Breeding Program (JBP) has strict pedigree and performance requirements. Mares admitted to the program must either meet certain scores in competition or score an overall 8.0 or better (averaged scores for technique and ability) on the jumping portion of the MPT.
Not only was Grey C Top the highest scoring overall in the Mare Performance Test in 2022, she achieved the highest jumping score as part of that test: a perfect pair of 10s!
Grey C Top (Grey Top x Delightful/Drosselklang II) was bred by Carlos and Gabriela Fernandez who own Barcelona Farms in Del Mar, California.
“Gracie showed a lot of ability when she started jumping, and she loves to do it,” said Carlos, “but we never thought she was going to get a 10 in ability and a 10 in technique!”
Carlos is a fourth generation horseman, with more than 30 years of experience in breeding, raising and managing horses. Gabriela’s fascination with horses began at age nine and has continued through the years, including competing in dressage.

They breed one or two horses a year with the goal of producing top Hanoverians, so people don’t have to go to Europe to buy horses.
“I think the breeders here can breed the best horses in the world,” said Carlos. “We have the best soil, great pastures and great people who can handle and take care of the horses.”
The Greengate Award, established in 2019 by Rachel and Warren Ehrlich of Greengate Farm, honors the breeder of an American-born horse that is a high-score winner at the US Dressage Finals at the National and FEI levels.
Lady in Red (ES Liberty Gold x MS Winessa/PB DeNiro) loves to show off at a competition, reports Heather McCarthy, who rides and trains Red for owners, Jan and Gary Marquardt of Walkabout Station. “The lower levels were hard for her because, I think, there wasn’t enough to keep her mind busy,” she said. “As the work got harder, she started listening more and more. When we’re on the same page, everything just feels effortless – like we’re truly dancing together!”
In addition to being a successful show horse, Heather reports Red loves to
go on trail rides and gallops more than any horse she has ever had. “If she doesn’t get out and blow off steam, she’s not happy and will let you know,” Heather said. “Once you get her out for a gallop, she lets out a big breath and starts walking on a long rein. She never spooks on the trails – just wants to take it all in and have fun!”
Early on, Red earned the barn name, Trouble. “She was born a mischievous child,” said Jan. “She was brave, inquisitive, friendly, and her nose was always into something. Plus, her gaits were exceptional. She was very special from birth.”
Owner: Janice Marquardt
Breeder: Janice Marquardt
As far as future plans, Heather said Red will determine that. “We’ll see how far we can go together. I’m hoping for grand prix and believe she can make it there, “Heather said. “She’ll tell me if it’s too much for her as the training progresses.”
So she can keep moving up the levels, Jan said she wants to do embryo transfer next year, and hopefully “the fertility fairies shine favorably upon us!”
Heather appreciates owners like Jan and Gary. “They are the most supportive partners a trainer could ask for,” she said. “We have the same mindset when it comes to horses: let them be horses, and always do what is best for them. I’m grateful for everything they’ve done and continue to do for me.”
Owner: Rachel Pennington
Breeder: Jill Peterson
The Greengate Award, established in 2019 by Rachel and Warren Ehrlich of Greengate Farm, honors the breeder of an American-born horse that is a high-score winner at the US Dressage Finals at the National and FEI levels.
Rachel Pennington and Finnegan (Fidertanz SQF x SPS Whitney/Wolkenstein II) earned the Greengate Award at the adult amateur FEI level.
Rachel had never ridden above First Level before Finn. “It’s fun, we’re learning together,” she said. “It’s rewarding to learn new movements and progress together. He has lots of natural talent, and I’m definitely the limiting factor. But it amazes me that he’s patient and tries so hard.”
While he’s a successful competitive partner, Rachel,
who has known Finn since he was born, said he has some “quirks.” He’s “very particular, methodical and doesn’t like change,” she explained. “He gets lots of special allowances, and I’ve learned to choose my battles.”
Finn does best with a lot of turnout time. “Unless the weather is bad or we’re at a show, he’s outside from late afternoon through the night,” Rachel said. “Once he’s outside, you can’t catch him until the morning. In fact, you have to leave a halter on him or you may never catch him!”
Rachel’s goal this year are
to perfect the movements at Prix St George and Intermediate. In addition, Rachel applied for and received his FEI passport “with the hopes of doing our first CDI this spring.”
Rachel appreciates the awards given because it helps recognize all those involved – from the breeders to the trainers. “With the time, money and effort that goes into this sport, it’s always great to have recognition,” she said. “I want to thank Jill Peterson of StarQuarry Farm – Finn’s breeder and our biggest cheerleader. I also want to thank my trainers at LTR Dressage, Lyndon Rife and Julie Madriguera, for the support and knowledge to get us to the FEI level. And of course, thanks to the American Hanoverian Society for recognizing our success.”
Owner: Hilltop Farm
Breeder: Hilltop Farm
The Greengate Award, established in 2019 by Rachel and Warren Ehrlich of Greengate Farm, honors the breeder of an American-born horse that is a high-score winner at the US Dressage Finals at the National and FEI levels.
For a performance breeding stallion dominating his classes, Louisville HTF (Lord Leatherdale x Unicum-D [a.k.a. Uforia]/Negro) lives a rather uneventful life at home, a circumstance that could be deemed unusual through the eyes of an experienced equestrian on a breeding and training farm. Day-to-day, Louis is “a really brave horse – happy to go to turnout every morning, the one you always know will walk right past anything new or scary,” remarked Hilltop’s barn manager, Jenn Callahan.
Despite his casual façade, Louis also has a sweet, funny
side to him. Those familiar with Hilltop’s TikTok channel will recognize him as part of the stall cleaning crew. And, of course, one of his favorite things is butt scratching, and he will perform professional contortionist tactics to maneuver his hind end under your hand without shifting his front end away, if you happen to start scratching anywhere else on his body.
About his rideability, Michael Bragdell, Louis’ trainer, said, “He gives the rider a really great feel and picks up new things easily. He likes to come out and work every day.” Consistent feedback from the test rider at the
North American Stallion Sport Test confirmed Louis “really lets you access his whole body.”
All of this translates to success in the show ring for this young breeding stallion. Louis has easily moved up to Third Level over the Florida show season this winter, with scores in the 70s. His next focus will be the breeding season with a few additional shows, aiming for the USDF Regional Championships and a return to the US Dressage Finals.
“This is a horse bred for the FEI arena,” said Hilltop’s Managing Director, Natalie DiBerardinis. “The Grand Prix is the real goal, and we’ll focus on building the foundation toward that end.”
Owner: Lysa Hodgson
Breeder: Brenda Hendershot
The Greengate Award, established in 2019 by Rachel and Warren Ehrlich of Greengate Farm, honors the breeder of an American-born horse that is a high-score winner at the US Dressage Finals at the National and FEI levels.
Before finding Dark Knight (Donnerwetter x World Class/ First Class) in late 2021, Lysa spent the previous five years with her recently retired KWPN gelding, alternating between success at the lower levels and periods of increasingly dramatic and unpredictable explosive behaviors under saddle, ending with Lysa’s decision to retire him and search for her next sport partner.
After a 40+ year riding career, Lysa was struggling to overcome her newfound fears and was looking for something that would allow her “to go from literal pony rides to getting back to competing at the US Dressage Finals, a tall task in any market, but especially in the insane horse market of fall
2021,” reminisced Lysa on her search.
Deacon was the last appointment scheduled before a search hiatus. He passed Lysa’s trainer, Heather Mehal’s tests, so Lysa cautiously got on. “Embarrassingly, I could barely get him to walk, much less trot. I was on the verge of tears, but also terrified of what he might do, since I didn’t know him at all. Everything felt terrible at the time, but Deacon just stood there and waited for me to get my act together. We eventually made it all the way up to canter that day, which is something I’d barely done in the last year,” admitted Lysa.
Lysa’s relationship with Deacon and confidence in
the saddle grew slowly and was solidified when Deacon failed to turn tail at a herd of deer jumping into the arena during a lesson. Deacon didn’t flinch,” said Lysa, “and just acted like he was saying, ‘Hey Bob! The family looks good!’ We call Deacon ‘The Mayor’ because he’s constantly on the campaign trail shaking hands and kissing babies everywhere he goes.”
Lysa had success at the various fall championships in 2022, less than a year into their relationship, securing Region 1 Regional Champion at Training Level and Reserve Champion at First Level. From there, Deacon and Lysa earned two invitations to the US Dressage Finals in Lexington, Kentucky. Despite the memorably challenging weather at Finals, “Deacon felt amazingly safe and focused,” said Lysa, taking home Reserve Champion at Training Level Adult Amateur and eighth place at First Level Adult Amateur.
At home, Deacon often resembles “a Thelwell pony, with a shaggy mane and pot belly,” laughed Lysa. “He does this perfectly slow and methodical pachyderm shuffle around the pasture, but when he’s ready to show and all put together, he’s just stunning!”
The Brooklea Farm award recognizes the Overall Eventing Horse of the Year. The champion from each of the seven eventing levels, beginner novice through advanced, is assigned a percentage factor that reflects the increasing difficulty of the levels. The horse with the most points after the difficulty factor has been added is named the Eventing Horse of the Year.
Danito (Dancier x Wie Musik/Wolkenstein II) had an interesting year because he started by breaking his withers in February. After the obligatory time off, he came back to work an inch shorter but fiercer than ever. He understands and enjoys his job, so he barely missed a beat with a top finish at his first outing in 2022 at Rebecca Farms 4*.
“When Tamie Smith suggested that Danito should run the 5* in Maryland, I had my doubts,” admitted owner Ruth Bley. “Could he really

gallop that long and jump those monster fences?” Well, apparently with Tamie in the irons, he can and they galloped to an amazing second-place finish.
“We’re not sure what this year has in store for him,” said Ruth. “Will he be a team horse and do we hold him back for potential team competition that he may or may not be selected for or do we run him at the 5* in Kentucky? Either way, as long as he’s happy and sound, it’s been a wonderful journey. He’s the little red horse who could.”

Under the guidance of her rider, Heather McCarthy, Lady in Red earned the FEI Horse of the Year award by achieving a 74.118% year-end score in the open division at Prix St. Georges.
“Red loves to show off in the show arena,” said Heather, “and she’s the diva of the barn. She’s like a dog – I swear. She will put her head down to the ground in front of your feet and stand there forever and let you scratch the inside of her ears and hug her. She will not take no for an answer. She just stands there with her head in your lap wanting cuddles. Then when you bring her into the arena, it’s ears straight forward, head up and ready to rock!”
Heather said Red is very smart, and she is
all mare. “Sometimes I think, ‘Is she ever going to do this?’” said Heather. “Then all of a sudden, she is like, ‘Oh, you want this? Okay, I got it.’”
As far as the future, Heather said they’ll take it day by day. “We’re going to keep chipping away and see how far we can go together. So far, nothing has been too much for her, so fingers and toes crossed!”

Qunique (Quaterback x Farera/Walldorf) is a second generation breeding for Christiana Noelting of Vacaville, California. His dam, now retired, was a prolific producer with multiple FEI level offspring. He was raised in an idyllic setting on irrigated green pastures with a herd of other youngsters.
Carla Schulz, assistant
trainer for Christiane Noelting, started him as a 3-year-old. In his younger years he was quite spirited, and it took a few trips down centerline for him to find his confidence in the show arena. They made two trips to Chicago for the National Young Horse Championships and that helped tremendously as the environment is so large and challenging. Christiane said, “It took a bit to get him to find his relaxation, and all that spirited energy to focus, but you need that to make it up the levels and really shine in the FEI.”
While Qunique really enjoys the show arena, he also benefits from diverse training with cavaletti work, long lining, trail riding and even jumping. All of this diversity and show experience has helped him really come into his own. In 2022 he was CDS and USDF Third Level Open and Third
Level musical freestyle champions.
Christiane said, “Qunique is really a horse for the future as he is confirmed in his 2s and piaffe and pirouettes are coming along nicely. He has already shown Fourth Level this year and scored a 67%.”

It took time and a very patient instructor (Jill Seely) to work through those issues, but the result has been a beautiful partnership with this sweet horse.
