Moving People. Connecting Places. OVER 100 YEARS OF PLANNING, ENGAGEMENT AND ENGINEERING
Epstein partners with communities to shape places that connect people and serve their needs.
Founded in 1921, A. Epstein and Sons International, Inc. (Epstein) is an integrated architecture, planning, engineering, and construction firm providing professional design and engineering services for transformative civic, transportation, aviation, infrastructure, and community-focused developments. Epstein has helped shape the built environment through thoughtful design, technical leadership, and long-standing public sector partnerships. Our teams understand the complexities of designing and delivering projects in dense urban environments, active transportation corridors, occupied public facilities, and historically significant neighborhoods.

Hickory Riverwalk Bridge HICKORY, NORTH CAROLINA
As the structural engineer, our engineers developed a light, low-maintenance structural system designed to complement the natural setting while providing a distinctive gateway into Hickory. The walkway uses modular 40-foot sections along its length, with two prominent 240-foot structures featuring inverted Fink trusses and steel towers rising approximately 25 feet above the deck. Longer 120-foot spans at these locations create a distinctive floating appearance over the water. Between the two structures, a chevron-shaped overlook with integrated bench seating provides a place for visitors to pause and take in views of the lake and surrounding landscape. The Riverview Bridge CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Epstein’s design strategy involved the unconventional solution of disengaging the Path from the Riverbank and elevating the entire structure above the water level. The process included field observation and research, stakeholder workshops, engaging local and official input at both the individual nodes and along the length of the trail, in an exploration of the constituent elements and the overall plan. The bridge is a 16-span reinforced concrete structure that is approximately 1010’-0” long and 16’-0” wide with 14’ path. The bridge is supported on single column caissons spaced at 60’-0” intervals and it has 7 horizontal curves varying from 100’-0” radius to 1600’-0” radius. River Trail Feasibility Study CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Epstein, in partnership with Active Transportation Alliance, conducted a feasibility study for a proposed trail connecting existing bike lanes on Halsted Street to the trail network in Ping Tom Park. The team assessed existing conditions, engaged key stakeholders and regulatory agencies, and evaluated potential trail alignments, ramps, underbridge connections, and riverfront construction approaches. Epstein developed concept plans, visualizations, and a preliminary cost estimate, and prepared an implementation plan outlining the survey, design, permitting, easements, and agreements needed to advance the project.
Lake Calumet Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Connection CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Epstein was selected to prepare a feasibility study and conceptual design for a bicycle and pedestrian connection along the shore of Lake Calumet in Chicago. The project focused on identifying a bicycle and pedestrian corridor connecting the Pullman Neighborhood and the Illinois International Port District to Big Marsh Park. Epstein reviewed existing conditions, developed design criteria, and prepared conceptual plans, typical sections, and cost estimates for proposed trail connections incorporating a combination of trails, boardwalks, and bridges. The study also included a conceptual design for a bicycle and pedestrian overpass of the Norfolk Southern (NS) Railroad, which runs parallel to Stony Island Avenue within the study area. The Wild Mile Floating Eco-park CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Epstein provided structural engineering services for Phases I and II of the Wild Mile, a floating eco-park along the Chicago River at 905 West Eastman Street. Epstein’s structural engineering focused on the anchorage system supporting the floating boardwalk. The boardwalk is anchored to both the river floor and the existing seawall, requiring the design to account for the forces generated by changing water levels, wind, waves, and river currents. Epstein specified the anchorage forces used in the design of the piles to provide stability while allowing the structure to adapt to fluctuating river conditions. The project has since grown to approximately 700 linear feet through two phases of construction, with the second phase completed in 2024. AWARDS Parker/Gentry Award | Field Museum, 2024
