In Genesis 1:28, Adam faced a world of endless challenges. God’s word to him was clear: mere subsistence in the new creation was not enough. He was commanded to fill the earth with humanity and to be a caretaker of the plant and animal kingdoms, subduing all for God’s glory and man’s good. These tasks were not possible for Adam and Eve to complete alone; the commands were given to individuals, but the scope of the commands indicated that God intended mankind as a whole to fulfill them.
