Paul wrote to Timothy and exhibited his confidence in this little Christian pastor through installing him in one of the biggest churches in the globe he came across in the city of Ephesus. Out of the Jerusalem church, renowned historians consider the Ephesian church in the Ephesus, a highly depraved city, possibly had hundreds of audiences attending. In close proximity there was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis or Diana at the Ephesus. This presentation is brought to you by Jerryjohnston.com
Pliny the Elder (AD 23 – 79), an early Roman historian also wrote that the Temple of Artemis was about 425 feet long and 225 feet wide, assisted by 127 columns, 60 feet high and took more than 100 years to build! Centered in this tremendous structure was the fertility and patron goddess, Diana, multi-breasted, respected, worshipped, privileged and sold in miniature with the thousands in the type of dolls or shrines.
And then there was an extremely popular, profoundly patronized brothel in the Ephesus. The brothel ad commercial is imprinted on one of the marble paving stones in the city of Ephesus. Dr. Jerry Johnston has been there and has observed it. The advertisement also comprises a heart, a cross, a woman‟s head, a foot and cash. This has been further deciphered like „turn left at the cross roads where you can buy a woman‟s love‟. The brothel is located opposite the renowned ancient library, a well-known photographic staple because of widespread archaeological excavation. No other Christian pastor would have chosen Ephesus as the city to sow a church, apart from Paul. It was Las Vegas on steroids! Dr. Jerry Johnston further stated, and up till now, God spectacularly blessed Paul‟s efforts as recorded in the Acts chapters 19 and 20. So, what was the real secret? Luke records, “This took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks” (Acts 19:10). Only the God knows how many multiplied hundreds of individuals who frequented this riotous city left with a new found belief in Lord Jesus Christ. It undoubtedly caused hullabaloo since the sale of Diana dolls approached towards a grinding halt. Also take a foretaste at Ken Shigematsu, author of "God in My Everything", shares with Dr. Jerry Johnston about how his pilgrimage to the holy places in Ireland changed his lifestyle and his relationship with God, watch here! This background provides even more pertinence to Paul‟s suggestion to Timothy to continue such a great church which scholars believed to be Jesus‟ mother, Mary, attended in her later years possibly accompanied by the apostle John. These were Paul‟s instructions: “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The term “accurately handling,” also deciphered “rightly dividing” holds the meaning of ancient times whilst stones had to be slashed with such accuracy architecturally that each stone fits accurately in the final structure. No difference and no wrong measurement were allowed. This presentation is brought to you by Jerryjohnston.com
Dr. Jerry Johnston time and again wonders if we have trimmed down the quality of preaching and coaching today. Seekers are not really dim-witted. However, quite often, sermons have been just dumb-down to stories, short quotations of Scripture, a raw-raw chat and very small of digging profound explaining what the Bible text actually mean and how it specifically applies to an individual in the context given. Great coaching by a stimulating Christian pastor is really tough and laborious job. Vance Havner wrote, “You can‟t preach it like it is if you don‟t believe it like it was.” Dr. Jerry Johnston further said that a Christian pastor exhibited his confidence or inadequacy of confidence, in the God‟s word by how much he precisely and exactly segregates the word before his spectators. Suppress all the intrusions and disturbances and splurge that precious time to meet Paul‟s clear suggestion to Timothy. This presentation is brought to you by Jerryjohnston.com
