The Mayor’s view

What a glorious summer, which started with a very successful Town Show in July. With the Lady Mayoress, we have been attending a lot of events in and around the Town.

I have been really struck by the diversity of activities and dedication of local residents in creating a vibrant community.

In September, I attended a wreath laying ceremony in North Weald to commemorate 100 years of the RAF. I also visited a former RAF Bomber Command base in Lincolnshire and sat in a Lancaster Bomber. I am really humbled by the bravery and sacrifice made by the brave and often very young men of the RAF, in particular those in Bomber Command.

Earlier in the summer we saw the welcome return of Epping Town FC, who won the Walter Tull Cup against Clapton FC. This is mainly due to the vision and efforts of the Club’s Chairman and I look forward to seeing the team return to their home pitch at Stonards Hill recreation ground, when the Jack Silley Pavilion refurbishment is finished. In this regard, the refurbishment will include a café which

we hope will be popular with our residents.

One of the highlights of the summer was the Epping Horticultural Society’s annual show at St John’s Church, which saw a great display of local flowers and produce.

On 12th October, the Epping ReUse Centre celebrated five years in existence.

It is really important that we reuse or recycle our unwanted furniture and electrical appliances. Epping residents have played their part and really contributed to the Centre’s success.

The Town Council will continue to support this important local facility when we can.

With Christmas almost here, the Town Council is organising the Christmas Market which is a very popular event both for residents but also visitors to the Town.

Please come and be part of this magical event on Friday 7th December. We have chosen the central Christmas tree from a local supplier, which will sit in the High Street and the Town Council will also be erecting the Christmas Lights, which brings a real Christmas spirit to the Town.

And finally, thanks to the Deputy Mayor, whose exquisite ball control meant the Town Council won the Petanque Match against Epping Forest District Council in our annual competition.

Walking Netball

Walking Netball has evolved from a growing demand for walking sports. Often, one of netball’s strengths is that people never forget playing the sport and the memories as well as the love for the game never leave.

Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level.

From those who have dropped out of the sport they love due to serious injury, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, it really is for everyone.

Women the length of the country have begun playing the game of Walking Netball for the fun, laughter and camaraderie the social session brings, as much as the health benefits on offer. It can give those who feel isolated an outlet, provide an activity for those who don’t deem themselves fit enough to run anymore and offer a stepping stone for those looking for a pathway back into netball.

A fond farewell to Argus Lighting

Over the 25 years I have been living in Epping, one of the striking aspects of our High Street has been the number and variety of its iconic shops. Regrettably, one of them will have closed by the time this issue is read. Argus Lighting has been part of the fabric of our High Street for many years and has illuminated it in more ways than one, whilst at the same time providing a unique and friendly service - but sadly, on the 20th of October its doors were closed for good.

Humphrey Wheeler studied electrical engineering and was in the very last intake of National Servicemen in 1960 where he served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). Afterwards, in 1965, he founded Argus Lighting and, together with his wife Linda, opened their first shop in George Lane, South Woodford. This was (L-R): Heide Praeg, Alison Tritschler, Humphrey followed by Epping in 1974, Bishop Stortford Wheeler, Linda Wheeler, Andrew Miller & Dot Jessop in 1980, Southend in 1986 and two small shops in Camden Town in 1989. Although successful, they have recently been progressively closed and Epping is the last to go after 44 years.

Argus Lighting on the corner of St Johns Road has been famous for its high end decorative lighting and occasional furniture and has over the years delighted us with its window displays, not just at Christmas (when they have always been eye catching) but throughout the year. It has catered for all our needs for lighting and, what is more, amazed us with some of the more exotic and attractive items displayed in the shop.

What caught my eye recently was a very large silver Buddha – quite remarkable. What was not so obvious was the service offered by the shop to assemble, adapt or repair lighting fittings. Humphrey said that he had an eye for attractive fittings and that has constantly been obvious in the displays. At one time, fittings were imported from various European countries but when this moved to the Far East, sourcing has been with English importers.

The staff in the Epping shop had long periods of service within the company. Andrew Miller for 36 years, Heide Praeg for 25, Dot Jessop for 12.5, and they have all provided an excellent and friendly service. Humphrey’s daughter Alison has also been involved for some 26 years and all of this has meant, not only an excellent service, but also stability and a friendly face whenever customers entered.

Humphrey confessed to being 79 and has been involved with the subject of lighting over some 60 years. During that time, as with all things, lighting needs and its associated technology has changed immeasurably. LED lights now provide a much longer-lasting product for example. He also mentioned that at one time chandeliers would all have shades on them whereas today bare lamps are the trend.

Humphrey was born in Epping and when he and Linda were married they lived in Woodford but moved back some 40 years ago and has been resident for over 65 years. Furthermore, he is currently President of the Epping-Eppingen Town Twinning Association and plans to continue with that, as well as Captain of Epping Golf Club Senior Section giving him plenty to do during his retirement.

On behalf of us all, Talk about Epping pays tribute to Humphrey, Linda and the team for all their hard work and dedication and for giving us such a wonderful shop. We wish them all the best for the future.

Tai Chi and Chi Kung

Tai Chi, originally developed as a martial art in 13th-century China, is today practised around the world as one of the most effective ways to develop balanced health of body and mind. Students gain physical and mental skills which evolve over time as awareness of their bodies increases. Chi Kung is part of the traditional Chinese medicine system based on the flow of Chi (or internal energy) through the body. Tai Chi and Chi Kung combine advanced breathing techniques and relaxation with slow, gentle, but highly controlled movements.

According to the NHS, “Tai Chi is for everyone”, but I would say it is particularly beneficial as we age. You can learn and practise it at your individual pace and, because there are always new, deeper levels to be achieved, throughout your life.

Among the many benefits reported for Tai Chi and Chi Kung are improvements in: • Muscle strength and tone • Energy, mental focus and stress reduction • Respiratory function • Flexibility, mobility, balance, posture • Lowering blood pressure • Reducing joint pain, especially from arthritis

I run a friendly Tai Chi and Chi Kung class at Linsdey Street Community Association and many of my students have already reported some of these benefits. Unlike Yoga and Pilates all my exercises are done standing up. These are followed each week by practicing the “Form”, a flowing sequence of movements (meditation in motion) often seen on TV being practiced in parks all over China. I also show students the martial applications of what they are learning as I believe this is crucial to enjoying the full benefit of Tai Chi and Chi Kung.

Epping Horticultural Society show

A host of entries lined tables at St John’s Church for Epping Horticultural Society's annual show. Entries featured fruit, vegetables and flowers as well as cakes, preserves and chutneys. Various stalls promoted local charities and sold plants and other products. A wide selection of refreshments, served by the WI, were also available.

Show spokesman David Buckle said: “The show was a great success. The theme this year was Summer Colour and there was plenty of that all around. Despite this year being one of the driest summers for six years, we had an amazing bumper crop of entries.”

The tables were filled with a wonderful selection of home-grown produce, colourful flowers and home-baked delights. There was also a selection of art and children made tray gardens.”

Epping Town Mayor, Cllr Nigel Avey, was delighted to open the show and be part of this colourful day. “I am amazed at the number and variety of entries. The displays were outstanding.”

Epping Forest Band

Epping Forest Band are pleased to announce the date of their Christmas Brass Band Concert: Saturday 8th December 2018 at 7:30pm in St John the Baptist Church, St Johns Road, Epping, CM16 5DN.

Epping Hall tea dances

For many years there has been a tea dance at Epping Hall (every other Thursday afternoon).

The afternoons have been enjoyed by many and provided a wonderful social event for the over 50s.

Numbers have been dwindling over recent months, resulting in the Tea Dance at Epping Hall finishing, but many are keen to see it continue. If you are over 50 and would like to enjoy dancing and socialising, over tea and biscuits, then please email: info@eppingtowncouncil.gov.uk marked ‘Tea Dance’. With your permission, we will pass on your details to the organisers and it may be this fun event can be continued.

The Epping-Eppingen Town Twinning Association

As we approach 40 years of existence, the Epping-Eppingen Association still welcomes new members and still maintains friendly links with the people of Eppingen.

This, of course, is our main raison d’etre, and this year we hosted a successful week-long Language Course in Epping, and by the time this article is published we will have spent a weekend with hosts in Eppingen. Next year these two events will be reversed, and we invite anyone living in or around Epping to join us.

We arrange a number of social events in Epping for our members. In the past couple of years we have enjoyed quizzes, magic evenings, supper evenings, wine tastings, even a sausage tasting, and most recently an afternoon sampling ‘Kaffee und Kuchen’ – which I assume does not need translating. Our next meeting is the AGM in November, followed by a supper at which Mark Smith (of the Antiques Roadshow) will talk about the Victoria Cross.

We would be delighted to welcome new members. Though we are supported by the Town Council, we are essentially run by members for members. The only commitment is to pay a membership fee of £5 per family per year, though we would hope you might want to involve yourself in some of our activities. There is no need to speak German. Most of our friends in Eppingen speak good English and are happy to do so.

Once our birthdays slip into the 50s and beyond there are some inevitable, physiological changes. Our bodies lose elasticity and moisture, what I refer to as ‘bouncebackability’; they give us more feedback.

We can also lose muscle and brain size and tone (sarcopenia) and our bones can lose density (osteopenia). But these aren’t inevitable as we age. With the right programme of exercise (and diet), you can help prevent or manage muscle and brain atrophy and osteopaenia. This is why we run our anti-ageing classes. So what you can do?

1. The older we get, the more we need to move. Increased movement and mobility, specific to your body’s needs can help prevent and help joint pain.

2. Include impact and/or resistance training in your workouts to prevent bone thinning. Swimming is great for your fitness but not for your bones.

3. Get strong legs. Increased strength and power in leg muscles has been linked to increased brain size.

4. Practice getting up and down from the floor.

5. Work on your balance.

Epping at the Movies

Epping at the Movies - the town’s community cinema - has been running for just under 2 years now and we’ve decided to do something a little bit special in 2019; on Sat 9th February, we’ll be hosting our first ever silent film with live music in St John’s Church.

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome the pianist, Neil Brand, to Epping. Neil is a regular contributor on Radio 4, has written and presented the BBC4 TV shows ‘Sound of Cinema’, ‘The Music that Made the Movies’ and ‘Sound of Song’ and regularly performs live all over the world. A new name for a well-established choir

Almost 50 years ago a choir was formed to bring local church choirs together - it was called Epping Church Choirs Association (ECCA for short). It quickly gained a strong reputation and sings a wide variety of music both sacred and secular. The choir performs three concerts a year and also takes part in the St John’s Christmas Tree Festival, as well as supporting events in the town.

The choir has around 35 members and rehearses on Friday evenings in the Catholic Church Hall in Epping.

In order to broaden the appeal of the choir it was recently decided to change the name to Epping Chorus; it remains an ecumenical choir, open to all, and we are

hoping the new name will be more appealing both to potential new singers as well as to those who enjoy attending concerts. Their next concert is at St John’s Church, Epping on 19th January 2019, when they will be performing Dvorak’s Mass in D and John Rutter’s Dancing Day. Entry to all their concerts is free so why not come and hear us?

AbFabFit Club

AbFabFit Club is located on Esgors Farm, Thornwood, CM16 6LY. Offering strength and cardio training, the club aims to help as many local ladies as possible to become fitter and stronger. We use barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells to increase muscle mass and bone density.

With an average age of 45, the club holds more than 33 classes a week. Jaine, owner of the club has helped more than 100 women since April. Epping Society views

Towards the end of September, Epping Forest District Council announced that it had terminated negotiations with its preferred developer of the large St Johns Road site. This came after several years of uncertainty during which most of the land has been unused and the Centre Point building has deteriorated through a lack of maintenance. The Epping Society was pleased to learn that a supermarket was no longer planned for the site and that investigations would be made into building a sports centre to replace the one which is to be redeveloped in the next few years. This was the preferred use to emerge from a public consultation as long ago as 2012. It remains to be seen if this outcome can be achieved.

In our response to local plans we have recommended that additional housing could be built on this site together with the facilities mentioned above. We were also attracted by proposals for an art cinema.

We very much doubt the merits of additional retail space on the site when there are so many empty, or soon to be empty, shops in the High Street. In recent weeks we have seen the closure of Argus lighting and Geoffrey Drayton, and earlier Aromaround and other long established retail shops. National press and media reports emphasise the effect on retail distribution from internet sales so now does not seem a good time to increase the supply of shops that cannot be let.

The Secretary of State has appointed Ms Louise Phillips MA MSc MRTPI from the Planning Inspectorate to carry out the independent Examination of Epping Forest District Council’s Local Plan. Her task is to consider whether the plan has been prepared in accordance with the relevant legal requirement and if the plan is sound, based on the criteria set out in paragraph 182 of the National Planning Policy Framework (the Framework).

The Epping Society intends to take part in the hearings and hopes to achieve “main modifications” to the Local Plan which we consider to be unsound and unsustainable. It was the result of a process which, in our view, failed to take notice of consultation responses. (Epping Society)

Epping Town Council wins annual petanque match

Epping Town Council hold an annual petanque match against Epping Forest District Council at our petanque piste at Stonards Hill recreation ground. The event is great fun.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor usually represent Epping Town Council and this year won 13-12. Town Mayor, Cllr Nigel Avey and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Grahame Scruton, were very proud of their achievement.

Epping Forest ReUse 5th birthday

Epping Forest ReUse celebrated it’s 5th birthday in October with Dame Eleanor Laing, MP and Epping Town Mayor, Cllr Nigel Avey, as the principal guests. Dame Eleanor said: “The ReUse centre is one of my favourite places. The concept is absolutely brilliant.”

Epping Forest ReUse (EFRU) is the Epping based charity which helps people in need by providing furniture, household appliances and other goods which are donated by members of the public. Over 30 agencies such as social services, women’s refuges, hospitals and homeless centres refer clients to EFRU. The agencies are given vouchers which enable their clients in exceptional need to get furniture and other goods free of charge. People on income related benefits are given a discount on the cost of furniture.

Imagine being given the tenancy of a flat and a moving in date but having no bed, cooker, fridge, chair, bedding, cups, plates, cutlery, etc. This is the reality for some people and EFRU helps. The charity receives wonderful ‘Thank You’ letters saying what a difference EFRU has made to people’s lives.

EFRU has six, mainly part-time, paid staff but relies on volunteers to deliver its services. There’s a wide range of opportunities so please contact Matt if you’d like to help. EFRU also needs financial support after a big increase in our rent, so donations or offers to run a fund-raising event would be welcome.

Epping Bowls club defibrillator

Epping Bowls Club has taken delivery of a defibrillator courtesy of funding from Epping Forest District Council and Epping Town Council.

EFDC Officer, Louis Walton, deputising for Cllr Kane, and Cllr Nigel Avey, Epping Town Mayor and his wife Caroline, gathered at the Lower Bury Lane Club to learn about it.

The defibrillator, plus a plaque thanking both organisations for funding will be based in the Clubhouse. The Club needed to raise £1,200 for the defibrillator and training for members. Funding of £600 was provided by EFDC and £400 from Epping Town Council.

The remaining £194 was generously provided by one of the Club members.

EFDC Cllr, Helen Kane, said “In tough economic times the need for local groups to receive financial support is increasing. I am delighted that Epping Bowls Club has been able to use grant aid funding from the District Council, to purchase a defibrillator which could save lives. Following receipt of a circular from the Essex Police’s Watch Liaison Officer, the Epping Town Neighbourhood Action Panel felt that the subject of Rogue Traders should be given a wider coverage in Epping and, therefore, made it the subject for its 12th information paper.

This is our 12th information document relating to keeping Epping safe and secure. The Police have recently drawn attention to the dangers of rogue traders who may call at your door. This document offers advice on who they may be, how to spot them and what to do if you are faced with one.

Rogue traders are people who may call at your door pretending to be qualified tradespeople and offer to do work on your home. They may seem friendly and persuasive but too often they target vulnerable elderly people.

Beware of doorstep sellers as well as those calling at your door offering services. They try to sell poor quality goods for highly inflated prices.

Simple steps are suggested: Check the trader’s identity: were you expecting them? If not, but you are interested in what they are selling, ask them to come back at a more convenient time and try to have another person with you. A genuine trader should have a badge or uniform and labels on his vehicle.

Take control: ask the questions and try to remember that it is a business situation.

Be aware that doorstep sellers are not your friends: watch out for clever sales techniques where you may be made to feel like you have lots in common.

Don’t sign on the spot: even if it means that you could lose a “special discount”. Take time to reflect, think about the purchase and shop around.

You have a right to cancel: if you do purchase something for more than £35 from doorstep sales people, you have 7 days to change your mind (this information should be given to you in writing by the sales person).

If in doubt, ask the person to leave and then phone Consumer Direct or Essex County Council Trading Standards on 08454 040 506 for further advice.
