The Mayor’s view

Well summer is now over and we can all start to look forward to Christmas. It has been a very busy year at Epping Town Council with lots of planning applications and we are starting to work on the Neighbourhood Plan, which you will hear much more about.

Epping in Bloom have added a real burst of colour to our town and I was delighted to present the school children with their awards for designing flower beds at Tower Road.

I enjoyed both the French and Italian markets when they visited the town and also attended the opening of the Lindsey Street Community Association Show and the Horticultural Show, both of which were very popular.

Deputy Mayor Les Burrows and myself played the annual petanque match at Stonards Hill Recreation Ground against the District Council and after a resounding victory, the Town Council now holds the trophy once again.

I attended a barbecue at Ashlar House and a tour of the facilities and a visit to Epping’s fire station, where we were treated to a spectacular display by the fire crew.

Laying a wreath at the Battle of Britain Service was a very moving experience which I will not forget, in addition to a visit to the North

Weald Airfield Museum.

It was a pleasure for the Town Council to host a reception for a group of visitors from our twin town of Eppingen in Germany and enjoy a special dinner hosted by the Epping- Eppingen Association.

I was delighted to present the winners’ prizes at the Epping Rotary Club’s annual Cross Country Run at Copped Hall and also a presentation at Slimming World to our Slimmer of the Year, which inspired my wife Lorna and myself to lose over half a stone.

I have had the pleasure of visiting the Reuse Centre in Bower Hill and presented the Theydon Oak with their certificate for winning the best floral display for commercial premises.

Epping Forest Band’s 80th Birthday Concert in St John’s Church was also a real delight.

November brings the very moving Service for Peace and the Remembrance Day services and in December, the Town Council will be serving the senior citizens’ Christmas lunch.

I have had a very busy and enjoyable year so far and I look forward to meeting so many more of you at the Christmas celebrations and into the new year.

I would like to send my sincere thanks to all the staff at Epping Town Council who help manage my commitments and make things easy and enjoyable.

I hope you enjoy all the exciting things coming up over the festive season, which you will find details of in this magazine.

Academy Arts

Theatre School & Agency - Epping

Academy Arts opened its branch in Epping at the old St John’s C of E School premises in 2008. Now in Epping St John’s new fantastic venue on Bury Lane, it has grown to be one of the most dynamic performing arts schools in the area.

THEATRE SCHOOL Our ‘Theatre School’ for ages 7-21 yrs run on Saturdays & Tuesdays. Classes are fast, fun-packed and focused. We teach all disciplines of performing arts techniques including dance, drama and singing. Musical productions are put on throughout the year as well as competitions and performances at local events including our very own Epping Town show and Xmas Fayre.

ACADEMY KIDS Our ‘Academy Kids’ classes run on Saturdays & Tuesdays for ages 4-7yrs.

The little stars play games, learn songs, dances and poems as an introduction to performing arts. These classes are fun, silly and very very LOUD!

Principal Nina Jones has worked extensively in the west-end for the past 20 yrs (Grease, Miss Saigon, Jesus Christ Superstar, Saturday Night Fever, Fame) and has also worked at some of the top performing arts training colleges in the country.

Apple Tree Cottage - Bury Lane

Harry and Wendy Pennington share their special cottage, which may be Epping’s oldest house.

When Harry and Wendy Pennington first stumbled upon Apple Tree Cottage back in 1973, they knew little of the importance of the building that has been home for over forty years. A fine example of a two and a half bay hall house, parts of Apple Tree Cottage date back to the 1470s and it is thought to be the oldest house in Epping.

The house was originally occupied by the Forester, who had some status, reporting to the Bishops of Waltham and later to Sir Thomas Heneage at Copped Hall.

He was responsible for organising the hunts and maintaining the beacon to warn of invasion. When Harry and Wendy bought their cottage, it was one of two semi-detached properties and they purchased it from an elderly lady who had lived there for some time.

When their neighbours in the adjoining cottage decided to move, they realised that cottage was rented and actually owned by a property developer, which gave them cause for concern. The only way they could guarantee the building would be protected was to buy the adjoining cottage and return it to the original house it had once been.

The Penningtons enlisted the help of a trusted local contractor to help renovate their ‘new’ cottage and make it into one house, but fortunately, Harry was very able to do a lot of the work himself. When they look back on the challenge now, it was much bigger than they anticipated.

But they succeeded and Apple Tree Cottage is a fine example of a medieval building, painstakingly restored for 21st century living, with every precious feature preserved. As Harry and Wendy restored the building into one house, they discovered and preserved many of its original period features which inspired their research into its history.

The house was built around 1470-1480 as the Forester’s residence. In the late 15th and early 16th century, the house comprised two and a half bays, or rooms, open to the roof. The smoke from the fire went up through the hole in the end of the roof. There was no upper floor in the house and no proper chimney. About 1540, the house was enlarged, an upper floor was inserted and a large brick chimney built. In order to insert the upper floor, the whole of the early timber frame building was

lifted up and placed on a low brick wall to create the necessary headroom for the additional floor. Later, in about 1580, a large crosswing was added, which forms part of the main living space today. This was extended in the early 17th century and a stair tower added to the rear of the house.

Its beautiful original hand-turned ballusters look just as perfect today.

By the end of the 17th century, many carriages passed through Epping en route to Newmarket races and many ale-houses took advantage of this. Apple Tree Cottage was used as an ale-house, the Castle, but only for a short period in its long history.

By 1830, the house had been divided into the two Highfield Cottages and was reduced in status to two tenements, losing some of its historic identity. It stayed divided until Harry and Wendy restored it as one in the 1970s. It is now Grade II listed as the Penningtons have exposed many original features that were formally concealed.

There are many ancient fireplaces in this fascinating property and some, which had been plastered over, were uncovered and restored during the 1970s works. This enormous fireplace (above) now provides a warm focal point to one of the ground floor living rooms.

During their restoration and research, Harry and Wendy found ancient maps (dating back to 1634) and the cottage’s relationship to nearby Winchelsea House.

The cottages were called Highfield Cottage and 2 Highfield Cottages, but by the time the Penningtons acquired theirs it was Apple Tree Cottage; probably because

During restoration, a 16th-century brick floor was discovered downstairs; Harry and Wendy exposing every brick, making a beautiful floor in their downstairs living accommodation. Harry actually made this magnificent door (opposite) himself.

When the Penningtons found their new home back in the 1970s, they had no idea of quite how old and special the property was. The restoration process has been a real labour of love, Wendy and Harry exposing and celebrating the historic features of the house. Drawings are on display in the hall, which shows how the timber structure has evolved over the centuries.

Harry and Wendy Pennington are now an important part of that history and with it, have made a very special family home.

Throughout the restoration process, Harry and Wendy have exposed and preserved many original features which help tell the story of its long life. At the heart of this property is a timber frame dating back hundreds of years and amazingly most of the timber frame still exists and the orginal wattle and daub infill survives, mostly under later plaster, but sections are on display under glass, telling the true story. This was a common building material, wattle being oak laths, daub being horse hair, cow dung, clay and straw, bound with willow. An inverted tree trunk in one of the bedrooms has been helping to support the house since the 15th century.

Upstairs, Harry and Wendy walk round on the original oak floorboards from the 16th century when the additional floor was added.

Ivy Chimneys playground

After extensive consultations with the Year 5 children at Ivy Chimneys Primary School, work began on Ivy Chimneys playground back in April.

Much of the equipment has been replaced, benches added and we now have a space which can be enjoyed by the whole family. The zip wire has been particularly popular and we hope it will add a real buzz to the area. There is also a little ‘shop’ for younger children and a mix of equipment to entertain a variety of age groups. It will take a period of time for the ground and soil to settle, but we look forward to seeing it being well used.

Our War Memorial

Epping War Memorial was cleaned on Monday 28th September by specialist contractors. The stone is fairly fragile and because of its proximity to the trees and road, it does get dirty. The memorial is actually a Grade II listed building and so we can only clean it with plain water and soft brushes (never chemicals) to protect it. We hope you enjoy it - without the moss.

Italian Market -

We welcomed the Italian market back to Epping on Saturday 24th October. A selection of fresh breads, cheeses and wonderful smells filled the High Street.

The continental markets will be back next year.

Watch out for farmers’ markets too.

Townsperson of the Year 2015

Every year, the Town Council invite you to nominate a person who has made a difference to the life of the town, because of a contribution they have made to a local club or organisation, charity work or a longstanding commitment to the town and its people. Please submit nominations before the end of January 2016. Council will choose the winner who will be presented with their award at the Mayor’s Civic Reception in April 2016.

Fun and flowers

Fire station green

Epping in Bloom have planted two new barrels on the green outside the fire station. One memorial barrel was planted

by John Duffell and his colleagues from the Royal British Legion. The second barrel was planted for the Epping Flower Shop and all plants were donated by them. The barrels make a pretty addition to the former green space as the In Bloom group work to improve the floral displays in and around Epping.

Tower Road green winter planting

Epping in Bloom have been busy planting the Tower Road green for winter. The flower beds, designed by our local school children, have been replaced with a yellow and purple theme and filled with plants that can survive the winter months. Stop and have a look as you go by. The Epping in Bloom group are always looking for volunteers, so join this fun and friendly group if you want to have a say in the flowers around our town. A big thank you to the local businesses and groups who have supported and sponsored Epping in Bloom so far: Argus Lighting, Crofts Dental Practice, Epping Horticultural Society, The Epping Flower Shop, Mr D Hunt, Jennings Bet, M&S, Nicholsons, Rotary Club of Epping, Tax Assist Accountants, Tesco, The Duke of Wellington pub, Travis Perkins & 1st Theydon Garnon Scouts.

Flower competitions

Over the summer, the Epping in Bloom group ran two competitions; grow the tallest sunflower (free sunflower seeds were available) and create a funky shoe garden.

Epping in Bloom are encouraging everyone to get involved in a variety of styles of gardening and here are the winning two entries.

Look out for future Epping in Bloom competitions.

Each year, Epping Town Council invite the local commercial premises to compete for the rosebowl; which commemorates the best floral display amongst the businesses. The standard of entries was particularly high and Council had trouble deciding, but the winner of the rosebowl this year is The Theydon Oak. Councillors were particularly impressed with the climbing roses which formed part of the display. Well done to Iain and his team.

Manager and chef Iain Moran said: “I’m over the moon. I’d be gutted if we hadn’t won it!” He added: “The floral displays get watered regularly - everyone does it.

We feed them a couple of times a week. It has become a bit of an obsession!”

Epping in Bloom, with the help of the 1st Theydon Scout Group Epping, have cleared the area of land behind the market store (opposite the side entrance to M&S) in preparation for a special one-off Christmas display. The two teams worked through the evening to clear and prepare the site and they did a fantastic job. There have been lots of ideas and suggestions so keep an eye out to see what appears!

The Epping In Bloom group have been working hard to bring this area into life for Christmas and beyond. Next spring, there will be a community project to create something interesting in this space, so do get in touch if you’d like to be involved.

The team will need all sorts of help, so whether you are a gardener, DIY fan or a builder who can donate any materials, Epping in Bloom would love to hear from you.

It doesn’t seem possible that the Christmas trees are soon to go up in the High Street and the light curtain on St John’s Church. There will be other trees illuminated around the town, so look out for the big light up.

Epping Town Council will be providing a light curtain for St John’s church tower to make things even more magical. Watch that tower!

By Jacqui, 1st Theydon Garnon Scout Group leader On the evening of 20th Oct, Scouts from 1st Theydon Garnon Scout Group joined forces with the Epping in Bloom team.

Together, using their bare hands and hand tools they cleared a heavily overgrown area of weeds and bushes at the back of M&S Market garden terrace. The area will be planted with fresh flowers and plants giving the area a new lease of life next year.

It was good to see the Scouts working hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder with other volunteers in the community.

Fun for all the family at our annual Christmas Fayre. A wide range of stalls provide a chance to do some Christmas shopping while children will be entertained by games and a chance to receive a gift from Father Christmas himself.

Some valuable prizes will be on offer in a prize draw and tombola. For a modest fee, visitors can have their cars valeted while they enjoy the festivities. Hot barbecued food will be available in the churchyard while tea and home made cakes will be on offer inside the church.
