The Mayor’s view

It is a great honour to be appointed the new Mayor of Epping and follow in my father’s footsteps, who was Mayor for two separate terms.

I take over from Tony Church who has been a great Mayor and his commitment to the role and the Town has been outstanding.

The Mayor’s role would not be possible to manage without the help of the Town Clerk Beverley and her team, both indoors and out. As Mayor you gain a real appreciation of the team’s hard work for the Council and Town.

My first duty was to attend the Jack Petchey Foundation’s “Speak Out” competition, at St John’s School. It was interesting to be shown around the school building and see what a huge improvement has been made. The competition was an eye-opener as to the importance of public speaking and motivating young people to find confidence.

I have always been keen to encourage local art and culture and the Epping Art Society Exhibition which I attended with the Lady Mayoress, who is an artist, was once again a great showcase for the local artistic talent there is in the Town.

I was also privileged to be invited to the NHS 70th Birthday Party at St Margaret’s Hospital and the Summer Fayre at Ashlar House. I learnt that dancing while wearing the Mayoral chain isn’t to be recommended.

At St John’s Church, it was an honour to welcome the new Vicar, Olivia Maxwell –Coote, to the Town and sad to bid farewell to Peter Adams, a Verderer and life-long supporter of Epping Forest. I also climbed the Church tower with visitors from Eppingen, our twinned town in Germany.

The highlight of my term so far was the Town Show, which was blessed with great weather. My thanks to Geraldine for organising this superb event with Bill and the team. It is a great showcase for the Town and had a wonderful atmosphere, which sums up why it is so good to live here.

We have a number of important projects which are coming to fruition this year. The renovation of the Jack Silley Pavilion is now underway and this amongst other things will provide new changing rooms for the sports grounds and a café.

Our Neighbourhood Plan is developing and we have asked residents to comment on it. This will act as an important blueprint for the Town’s future and how residents see its future development.

I look forward to meeting you all at future events.

Epping Open Gardens supports two local charities

Epping hosted their third Open Garden event this year; to date it has supported both local and national charities: All Saints Church, Epping Upland, Children with Cancer, Chigwell Riding Trust, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Epping in Bloom and St Clare’s Hospice.

Each time, the people who attended have enjoyed looking around 10 much-loved gardens and luckily we have been blessed with good weather. The money raised over this time is 2014: £1500, 2016: £3300 and 2018: £2565.

An amazing young woman, Becca Ashton and her family has inspired our last two events. She spent most of her life with cystic fibrosis as she was diagnosed aged two and half, and knowing that the time she had with us would be limited by her illness, she lived her short life to the utmost. She gave the best of herself and inspired others to do the same. Sadly she recently left us, whilst under the care of St Clare’s Hospice.

When the next event takes place in 2020, we will again support St Clare’s and a Dementia care charity. Please join us in putting together this new event. We need enthusiastic volunteers prepared to open their gardens to the public for one afternoon along with suggestions for the Dementia Charity. If you live in Epping and would like to share your garden with other enthusiasts or have any ideas or suggestions please contact Susan Axford on 01992 561588.

Epping Monday Market

Mrs Baker’s shoe & slipper stall -

Two common features of many of our Monday Market stalls are (a) the length of time they have been going (b) the family connections to the stall reaching back in time.

These aspects feature in relation to the shoe and slipper stall run by Lesley Baker - known to all as “Les”. Les runs the shoe and slipper stall, which was started by her mum and dad 41 years ago (in 1977) and she took it over in 1992 (26 years ago). Les lives in Cheshunt and gets up at 5.45am to collect the stock and load up so as to arrive at the market at 7.30am and to be ready for customers by 9am. Les also has a stall in Waltham Cross and enjoys both Markets but notices that when she comes to our market people are so ready to come and say hello. In fact, I had to wait my turn before I could get the details for this article. It is amazing what a wide selection of goods are available at our Monday market and it is very popular.

However, as the saying goes “Use it or lose it” so make sure that you come and visit the market whenever you can.

Epping Market has been a key part of Epping life for many years. Not only has the market been trading for a very long time, many of our traders have been with us for over twenty years. This year has been particularly difficult with a harsh winter and unusually scorching summer. Many of our regular traders have been there week after week in these extreme conditions.

If you aren’t a regular to the market, you’d be amazed at what you can find there. If you need shoes, batteries, garden twine, plants, a mobile phone cover, socks, bedding, cakes, glasses, cards or clothes, why not visit the market first. Epping Town Show -

1st July

Huge crowds turned out for our annual Epping Town Show which featured a variety of arena entertainment, side shows and over 60 stalls manned by local community groups and organisations.

The Town Mayor, Councillor Nigel Avey officially opened the event and along with Deputy Lieutenant of Essex Michael Chapman and the Mayoress, was led into the arena by the Epping Forest Pipe Band.

Other arena entertainment was provided by Illusions Dance Academy, John Daddio Clarke and Linda Em (from Epping Music Club), Crossfit Kids, Epping Forest Band, Academy Arts, Theydon and Abridge Jazz Club Trio, the Etcetera Morris Men and Te Ashi Do Karate.

Other side shows included a funfair, walkabouts by Peppa Pig and Chase Dog from Paw Patrol, a circus skills workshop, children’s painting competition, a local art display, birds of prey display, donkey rides and farm animals. New for this year were a fun dog show, a Punch and Judy show and a bees educational display.

Town Mayor Councillor Nigel Avey said: “The Town Show takes months of organising and I would like to thank our excellent staff and volunteers for all their hard work and everyone who took part.

It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves in the sunshine at what is an excellent showcase for Epping. A special thank you to Mullucks Wells estate agents for displaying Town Show advertising boards around the town; Sadlers Taxis who sponsored the pipe band; Doggie Doo’s who sponsored the dog show and Little Sunbeams nursery for organising the children’s painting competition.”

Swaines Green May Fayre 2018

The Friends of Swaines Green Conservation group held its annual May Bank Holiday Fayre on Saturday 5th May. Now in its 17th successful year, it attracted its biggest ever crowds with everyone enjoying the Fayre in fantastic weather.

The Friends of Swaines Green were ably supported by the 1st Theydon Garnon Scouts and the Epping Army Cadets and they would like to thank the young people and leaders of both organisations for their invaluable help.

As always, there was something for all the family from interactive Belly Dancing and ferret racing, alongside the more traditional Morris Dancing, donkey rides and Punch and Judy show. There were many stalls selling local produce including jams, preserves, honey, and plants among others. For the more curious there were owls to hold and snakes to stroke.

Jacqui Mortimer, the acting chair said: “The Friends of Swaines Green would like to say a very big ‘Thank You’ to the new owners of the Thatch Cottage for continuing to allow the Fayre to be held on their land. We were very pleased to see so many families having a good time and would like to thank all those who visited our Fayre and made this such a wonderful traditional day out. Save the date — next year’s Fayre will be on Saturday 4th May.”

Gong Bath -

Have you experienced a Gong Bath? The Gong originated nearly 6000 years ago and has been used for healing, meditation and ceremony ever since. The term Gong or Sound Bath is used because when played, the gong bathes the human body in sound. Recipients lie down either on a yoga mat or seated in a chair, and are literally immersed in the sound of the gong.

People report very deep states of relaxation and meditation along with a feeling of totally letting go so that the mind, body and spirit can be recharged and rejuvenated. It is not unusual for physical pain to be relieved after a gong bath as the sound waves work at a deep cellular level. Many people notice a major improvement in the quality of their sleep and a better ability to cope with stress.

Sarah Gregg is an experienced sound healer who has been offering gong and sound events in the area for the past twelve years. During a session Sarah uses a wide variety of instruments including gongs, crystal and Himalayan singing bowls, chimes, drums, flute and voice. Sarah holds regular “gong bath” events at Epping Hall, St Johns Road, Epping throughout the year.

Dramatic changes to Policing in Epping Forest District - By Mike Compton

Dramatic changes regarding policing have recently taken place regarding our Town and District. Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) funded a private company ParkGuard to patrol certain areas in February and March.

However, the Council announced in the new April budget that for the next three years three Essex Police Officers would join its Community Safety Unit (CSU) full time. Since then, the Officers have been recruited, offices provided and they were in post by June. As Caroline Wiggins, CSU Manager, explained the Officers are being guided by the Essex Police and Fire Commissioner’s plan, the Community Safety Partnership and local priorities and will directly tackle local issues. They have not brought past cases with them. They are based in the EFDC offices in Epping and are guided by weekly tasking sessions. The Officers are Sargeant Neil

Ross and Constables Karl England and Steve Bowering.

The public’s contacts with the Police will continue to be through the usual channels and our Officers will not be contactable by the general public. ParkGuard continued to patrol until the Officers were in post and became operational on 18 June. There is budget provision for ParkGuard to be retained for certain occasions such as Guy Fawkes.

This is a very positive step forward and it has been complemented by another step taken by Essex Police themselves. It has been announced that we have now got our local “Bobby” again. PC Andy Cook is now based locally and is responsible for Abridge, North Weald, Theydon Bois, Thornwood and Epping. Andy is already known to many of us as he did have a similar role some years ago and he intends to attend meetings in each of the areas. ParkGuard will continue to patrol throughout the summer holidays and will return at October half term. Taken together, these new measures are both heartening and reassuring.

St Clare Hospice set to host a Firewalk fundraiser

Calling all courageous soles... are you brave enough to conquer the coals for St Clare Hospice?

Following the success of their 2017 Firewalk, in which more than forty fierce fire-walkers raised over £10,000 for the hospice, the Hastingwood-based charity will be hosting another scorching event on Sunday 28th October.

Amongst last year’s brave participants were two members of the St Clare Hospice Inpatient Unit team: IPU Manager Vanna Poulter, and Essie Ducat, a nursing assistant.

Essie said: “I’ve never done anything like this before and was nervous about it, but I absolutely loved it. I just kept thinking of all the patients I have cared for, and knew that I was making a difference to so many families by raising vital funds. It was such a thrill to cross the coals and gave me a real buzz – I encourage everyone to try it!”

St Clare Challenge and Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, said: “Are you worried about being troubled by chilly toes this autumn? Want to warm your feet by the fire? What better way to get toasty than by entering the St Clare Firewalk! Not only will you keep the chill off as the weather turns cooler, you will also help to raise a scorching amount for your local hospice. Help us hit our £10,000 target and get ready to take the heat for St Clare!”

The firewalk will be hosted at St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, CM17 9JX. Registration is £25 per person and we ask participants to pledge to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship. The event is open to all ages, but under 18s must have signed parental permission to walk. Places are limited to 40 people. On Saturday June 9th Epping in Bloom held a community picnic for local residents who applied for free tickets. The picnic was held at Market Garden Terrace, the community garden near M&S, Epping Forest Band played wonderful music. Jahdre, head chef at Hayward’s Restaurant, Epping, did a live demonstration. He showed the guests how to make a tomato canape and a radish, carrot and fennel salad using fresh ingredients from the garden. Victoria did a live demonstration on how to plant a summer hanging basket. Tesco Epping store manager Oliver came along to support the day, along with Community Store Champion Gemma.

The day could not have gone ahead without the Tesco Bags of Help fund. Chairman of Epping in Bloom, Victoria, would like to thank all the local residents for coming along and all the people that voted for Epping in Bloom in Tesco, using their blue coins in the Theydon Bois, Ongar and Epping stores. The Epping in Bloom team made sure everyone had a fabulous day. There was plenty of food and drinks all purchased from Tesco and homemade cakes, some of which were made by Paula, the president of the WI and her members. The feedback has been so wonderful. We are so glad the 60 guests who came enjoyed themselves. We are going to be making it into an annual event. Community coach trip to Southend

On the 4th July, a coach trip to Southend was organised by Karen Murray, Engagement Officer for Epping Forest District Council and funded by the Rotary Club of Epping. The purpose of the outing was to give those suffering from Dementia, elderly people with a disability and those who were elderly and alone, in our community, a day out at the seaside, all were accompanied by a carer. Three Rotarians, Karen Murray and her assistant, were also present to assist and provide help wherever necessary.

The coach left Epping at 10.30am and arrived back at 4.40pm. Once in Southend everyone was allowed to do their own thing as long as they joined the coach for leaving. Nobody went missing! From the letters and emails received the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Youth Council celebrate ten year anniversary

Epping Forest Youth Council marked its 10 year anniversary with an evening reception at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by the Right Honourable Dame Eleanor Laing, MP on 4th July 2018.

The evening celebrated ten years of local youth democracy in Epping Forest and over 80 Youth Councillors past and present were there to share their experiences. The Youth Council presented a film highlighting their work, photographs spanning the 10 years were displayed for guests enjoyment alongside examples of their youth-lead project work.

Democratic voice for young people Through Epping Forest Youth Council, local young people are given a democratic voice and are able to influence the decisions that directly affect their lives. Youth Councillors have developed and delivered a range of project work covering themes such as promotion of activities for young people, personal safety awareness, drugs education, youth volunteering and positive mental health campaigns in consultation with their peers.The recently honoured host, Dame Eleanor Laing MP, delivered a key note speech praising the work of the Youth Council.

Encouraging and inspiring speeches were given from the Chairman of Epping Forest District Council, Councillor Richard Bassett, Leisure and Community Services Portfolio Holder, Councillor Helen Kane, Councillor Holly Whitbread, High Sheriff of Essex Bryan Burrough, Roger Hirst, Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner and five current and past Youth Councillors; Ellis Spicer, Jaymey McIvor, Matthew Tinker, Adam Freeman and Florence New. Epping Town Mayor and Deputy Mayor

At the Annual Council meeting in May each year, Epping Town Council elect a new Town Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming Civic Year.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are chosen by their fellow councillors, usually for their long-serving or contribution to the Town Council. Epping Town Council has 12 councillors, six representing Hemnall Ward and six representing St John’s Ward.

The Town Mayor (Chairman) for the 2018-19 Civic Year is Cllr Nigel Avey.

Nigel has been a Town Councillor for seven years and is also the Chairman of Epping Town Council’s Planning & Neighbourhood Planning Committees. Cllr Avey is also an Epping Forest District Councillor.

The Deputy Mayor for the 2018-19 Civic Year is Cllr Grahame Scruton.

Cllr Scruton has been an Epping Town Councillor for four years and is Council’s Key Member for Finance. Grahame also sits on the Planning Committee, Corporate Governance Advisory Committee and several working parties including budgets, action plans and playgrounds.

Epping Neighbourhood Plan consultation

The draft Epping Neighbourhood Plan has been out for public consultation over the summer months and local people were able to access it electronically on the Town Council’s website. Consultation forms were circulated through residents and business doors in Epping and via email to community groups and statutory consultees.

Thank you to everyone who responded either by completing a paper form or online via email or Survey Monkey. We really appreciate how much work has gone into the responses. The responses and additional comments are now being collated to be analysed by the Neighbourhood Planning Advisory Committee over the coming months to shape the final version of the Epping Neighbourhood Plan.

The Epping Neighbourhood Planning Advisory Committee is made up jointly of members of the local community and Epping Town Council. Epping Neighbourhood Plan is a separate document to the District Council’s Local Plan.

Stonards Hill Refurbishment

The refurbishment of the Jack Silley Pavilion at Stonards Hill recreation ground began on Monday 23rd July 2018 and will last about 15-16 weeks. The Pavilion will be available for hire throughout this period, largely as usual, so do contact us to hire one of our two rooms. The main closure will be the football changing rooms and we thank our football teams and neighbours for their understanding while we refurbish. The works should result in much better changing facilities. We are refurbishing the roof and adding a café extension which we hope will be a welcome addition to this lovely spot.

We are hoping to make some further improvements to the recreation ground once the Pavilion itself is complete and we will keep you updated as this progresses. Please continue to enjoy all the other facilities at Stonards Hill recreation ground, including tennis courts, petanque area, skate park and playground. Don’t forget to watch our football teams play at Stonards Hill recreation ground: Epping Town FC, Epping Youth FC and North Weald Veterans. Contact them for details of their fixtures.

Walter Tull Cup : Epping Town 3 v Clapton 2

Epping Town FC have won the Walter Tull Cup after beating Clapton 3-2 after extra time.

Epping Town were 2-0 down early in the first half but fought back to 2-1 at half-time and had levelled the score at 2-2 after 90 minutes before clinching the winner in the first period of extra time.

The Walter Tull Cup fixture is held each year at Clapton’s East London ground to commemorate one of the first black footballers to play English league football. Walter Tull started his career at Clapton and went on to play for Tottenham.

STARTING CONVERSATIONS Let’s get this conversation started….

This is a free series of conversations taking place once every six weeks. Through the use of film and discussion we hope to convey some of the wisdom modern psychology and psychotherapy has to offer.

Narrative and movies have for a long time been used to help convey understanding, explore ideas and test our beliefs. We intend to use this same tradition to explore two modern psychological constructs known as Compassion theory and mentalisation.

What motivates a particular character to act the way they do? How does their emotional world direct their intentions and their behaviours? How can we understand breakdowns and repairs in relationships?

We believe answers to these questions is not only a way to understand and further appreciate film but also a way to understand ourselves.

Films that have been presented include ‘a Monster Calls’, ‘Good will hunting’ and ‘a Beautiful mind’.

Previous feedback includes, ‘fascinating evening, psychology theories came alive’.

We recommend watching the films prior to the evening.

Greg will be showing small excerpts and opening up discussion about aspects of the film. Please RSVP as small refreshments will be provided.

Greg Mackenzie will be hosting this event: an NHS psychotherapist with 15 years of experience.

Sonic Bench St John’s Church Garden, Epping: Appeal for a person or group to update the bench audio

Since the Epping listening bench was installed, the buttons have been pressed 3001 times, which works out to a weekly average of 81 times!

It would be lovely if the audio on the bench could continue to be updated periodically. This would help to sustain interest in the bench. It would work best if an individual or organisation would like to take responsibility for co-ordinating the project, so this is an appeal for volunteers who might like to do it.

Instructions on how to maintain the bench and update the content are available, which can be forwarded to anyone who is interested. Some of the other benches are aiming to have new content in time for Remembrance Day. This might be a nice target for the Epping bench also; this will be about a year since it was first installed.

It would be great to see it continue to be used and enjoyed by the local community.
