The Mayor’s view

I am pleased that the Town has been as active as ever, starting with the popular ‘Proms on the Green’, organised and beautifully performed by the Epping Forest Band.

The Horticultural Society hosted ‘An English Country Show’ in St John's Church which was very well attended and I was extremely impressed with the high quality and variety of entries.

Epping in Bloom have continued to plant attractive floral displays around the Town. They received a Silver Gilt award in the Anglia in Bloom competition.

Congratulations to Victoria and her team.

I attended Abbeyfield’s open day in North Weald and we were met by some very energetic residents, one of whom danced to a live singer (in her 90s!). I also welcomed visitors from our twin town, Eppingen in Germany.

I was honoured to be invited to the 100th Anniversary of the inauguration of The Women’s Institute in Epping. This is an amazing achievement and was justifiably celebrated with over 80 members present.

Here’s to the next 100 years ladies.

The Town Council was proud to unveil two Blue Plaques,

one in Theydon Grove to the Silley Family who gave so much to Epping, including Stonards Hill Recreation Ground, and the second to published local historian Sidney Hills, with some of Sidney’s family attending.

The Town Council has reacted to the increasing problem of youth antisocial behaviour by setting up a committee to liaise with local schools, groups and the police to coordinate with concerned parties to look at alleviating these issues. We will keep you updated.

November will see the Remembrance Parade and service organised by the Royal British Legion.

On 1st December, the Town Council will host the Christmas Market and this year, we will have a Christmas tree on the Piazza. On the same day, St John’s Church will open its magical Christmas Tree festival.

I was proud to join a group of 8 daredevils in jumping from 14,000 feet in a tandem skydive in support of the Heart of Epping community project, raising much needed funds.

Finally, I must thank Beverley, our Town Clerk and all her staff; Bill Towers and his grounds team, and the Councillors who work so hard on behalf of Epping, which has resulted in us being awarded the Local Council ‘Quality Award’.

CENTRAL CHRISTMAS TREE

Come and join us at Epping Christmas market on Friday 1st December in the High Street. There will be a wide selection of Christmas themed merchandise, so an ideal time to do some Christmas shopping.

There will be carol singing by our local school children, music, dancing, food and much more. We have heard Santa will be joining us in the grotto at Epping Fire Station.

There will be something for everyone, so come and join in the fun.

Epping Town Council will be lighting up more trees this year, but in particular, there will be a central Christmas tree on the ‘Piazza’.

We would like to thank the Rotary Club of Epping and the Epping Society for their donations towards the tree. We would also like to thank everyone who put a token in the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, as your support has helped finance the lights for the tree.

‘You are Hear’ listening bench, St John’s Church

The unveiling of the listening bench in St John’s Church garden was arranged for Saturday 4th November 2017. People can now go and listen to historic archive clips about our town. The bench has been provided by Essex County Council, through the Essex Record Office. We are very lucky to have one in Epping, so please go along and enjoy it.

A great way to learn about your area. Recordings are programmed into the bench. Just sit back and listen.

Two new Blue Plaques for Epping Sidney Hills, High Street

A blue plaque marking the former Epping High Street home of local historian and author Sidney Hills has been unveiled by Epping Town Council.

Sidney Hills came from a very old Epping family, tracing through his mother’s line, the Hummerstons, back to beyond 1785 in Epping.

Sidney’s aunt, Elsie Hummerston, ran the local bakers and his uncle, George Hummerston, ran the local greengrocers. His aunt lived at 47 High Street while Sidney and his parents lived next door, at 45 High Street, where he continued to live after he married his wife, Doris. They both later moved to Chapel Road to the newly-built warden-assisted properties. Sidney was born in St Johns Road in 1896 and lived in Epping all his life. He went to school at the Epping and Theydon School (the then Elementary School).

After the First World War, in which he fought, he had many jobs, starting as a stone mason, a reporter for the Epping Gazette and eventually working for another old Epping family, at the Cottis foundry, for more than 40 years.

His father had also worked for the Cottis family at the Cottis garage whilst also being the first secretary and treasurer for the original Epping Town Football Club in the late 1890s, a club Sidney continued to support.

Sidney’s mother, Elizabeth Ada Hills, was a local historian and published several books about Epping. Following in her footsteps, Sidney will be remembered as one of Epping’s foremost historians.

Sidney had a regular column in the Essex Countryside magazine and in the West Essex Gazette noting and recording the history and life of Epping. He also wrote many articles on such subjects as the origins and life in the Epping workhouse which started off in the High Street and later moved to The Plain. This was later taken over by the Army in 1917, to become St Margaret’s Hospital.

Sidney kept a pictorial record of Epping with many of the earliest photographs being saved for prosperity of Epping in a book entitled ‘Epping: the Bygone days’.

He also wrote several books which have become local treasures now stored in the Essex Record Office.

Town Mayor Tony Church remembers meeting both Sidney and Doris who were great friends of his grandfather, Jim Church. Cllr Church said: “I always remember them fondly, particularly the historical stories of Epping he used to tell.”

Local resident Wendy Jonas nominated Mr Hills for the blue plaque which was unveiled at a short ceremony attended by members of his family and town councillors, Freemen of the Town and others interested in the town’s history.

Also present was Sarah Joy, from Essex Record Office, who played a recording of Mr Hills recalling bygone days in Epping, including the time when a car was seen driving through the High Street for the first time.

Town Mayor Tony Church described Mr Hills as “one of Epping’s great historians and writers.”

A blue plaque has also been unveiled for The Silley Family in Theydon Grove, Epping. This will be covered in the next issue.

Epping WI 100th anniversary -

Epping Women’s Institute celebrated their Centenary on 13th September 2017. Over 80 members and guests attended the lunch. The speakers were Barbara Faulkner on “Love that hat” and Paul Clancy with “The Art of Magic”.

Two Centenary Roses were planted either side of the WI Community Bench and a new banner, in the Market Garden in Epping, with a group photo taken with Epping Town Mayor Tony Church, who also presented the group with a plaque from the Town Council.

Epping WI is a thriving group with 80 members and a waiting list of 20.

We hope to continue for another 100 years and inspire many more women.

Epping WI wishes to thank everyone who made this day very special, including Magpie Catering who made a fantastic lunch for us and all our guests that joined us in our celebrations.

Market Garden Terrace: Community Garden camera

There is a new camera at the Market Garden Terrace Community Garden and it will pick up anyone causing damage or stealing from the garden. Any misuse will be taken to the Police for action. Please can everyone keep an eye on our lovely garden and report anything suspicious to Epping in Bloom or Epping Town Council.

You may be aware that Epping FC folded last season. However there has been a lot of hard work done to try and reform the club. The project mission is to make Epping a focal point of the community and to make Epping a club that you can be proud of. Unfortunately, there are a few financial obstacles in the way and we need your help in resolving them.

Epping FC do not earn millions of pounds as Premier League clubs do, so we rely on sponsorships and donations.

Epping Town Council have been very supportive and also Jennings the bookmakers and VIP Grooming.

If you are in a position to support the club financially in any small way, by way of sponsorship with a banner around the perimeter of the pitch and be part of the amazing project to enable Epping FC to be a strong community focal point, then please get in touch. If you have experience of raising funds, please contact Epping FC. We will never be on the same level as the professional clubs but Epping is your local club and we want you to be part of the new adventure. Epping FC’s website is being constructed and home fixtures are displayed in the town notice boards and The Garnon Bushes Public House.

Epping in Bloom win Silver Gilt for Epping at Anglia in Bloom

Epping in Bloom have won a Silver Gilt award for Epping at the prestigious Anglia in Bloom awards. Chairman Victoria Robertson and her team collected the award at a special ceremony in Norfolk which marks the achievements of regional ‘In Bloom’ groups. Epping Town Council would like to thank Epping in Bloom for their continued hard work around the town. I am sure you will all agree that they have made such a difference to the quality of our green spaces.

The volunteers do regular maintenance and planting days at Tower Road green, the fire station barrels and at the Market Garden Terrace community garden. Please volunteer and join them if you can. Not only is it good exercise, the group have coffee, picnics and great fun.

Epping Town Mayor skydives for charity

Eight daredevil fundraisers, including Epping Town Mayor Cllr Tony Church, took part in a tandem skydive to raise money for the Heart of Epping Appeal.

The group: Tony Church, Mick Rogers, Julie Turrell, James Apps, Keith Oakes, Toby Kinsey, Wayne Cunningham and Teale Cunningham, took to the skies near Beccles in Suffolk in October, jumping from a plane some 14,000ft from the ground.

Their efforts are set to raise a four-figure sum for the Heart of Epping Appeal, which is raising money for a community facility to be built adjoining St John's Church in Epping.

Cllr Church said: “It was exhilarating. I was nervous but the feeling when you fall towards the ground is an absolutely amazing one and coming through the clouds was fantastic. The freefall was so quick.”

He added: “Everyone who took part put in a fantastic effort to raise money through sponsorship. Thank you to everyone who supported us and the Appeal.”

The Epping Society

We had many visitors at our stall at the Town Show in July and again at Copped Hall Open Day in August, all showing great interest in our work for the community. The District Local Plan with its proposals for over 1,000 additional houses in Epping alone, and mostly on Green Belt land, was the main theme at both events. In August, Epping Forest District Council published a list of additional sites for inclusion in the Plan without consultation, of which most visitors to our stall were totally unaware.

The continuing delay to development proposals in St Johns Road is clearly a bone of contention with our members and Epping residents. They are concerned that the site is deteriorating and becoming an eyesore. It appears Town and District Councils cannot agree and that is holding up the scheme. We urge readers to contact ward councillors for an explanation.

Members have brought to our attention the disturbances caused by disorderly youths in Epping High Street and St Johns Road. We recommend that anyone affected or with information to contact Essex Police.

Autumn brings with it the annual tribute to our war dead and as usual The Epping Society will be laying a wreath at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday. In anticipation of Christmas, we were pleased to learn that Epping Town Council is planning to reinstate a Christmas tree on the plaza for the festive season and have made a contribution towards its cost. Our Life President, Denys Favre, reaches his centenary in December 2017 and we send him our congratulations and thanks for his commitment to the town and people of Epping over several decades.

Epping in Bloom cards and cover picture - by Gema

Epping in Bloom are having some cards designed which were painted by Gema Denia, of Gemacrafts, a local lady who has been an Epping in Bloom volunteer for two years. Gema helps during weekends especially during the summer months with weeding and general garden duties on Tower Road, with the fire station barrels and the community garden. In the community garden you will see some of Gema’s art on display above the vegetable raised bed. Gema painted a wonderful hungry hadrosaurous. At the Epping annual horticultural show in August, her painting of the community garden (above right) won 1st prize and this inspired her to paint this beautiful Christmas winter scene of the herb garden (left and on the cover). Cards will be available for sale on Friday 24th November in the Market Garden Terrace community garden from 6.30pm during the Epping in Bloom Christmas tree light switch on and also at the Epping Christmas Market on 1st December.

Epping Rosebowl winner: the Garnon Bushes

The Garnon Bushes pub in Coopersale has received the Town Council’s Rosebowl award for its summer floral displays. The award has been presented annually by the Town Council since 1990. The competition is open to all commercial premises in the town.

Landlord Mark Barrigan and landlady Pauline Nicholls received the rosebowl and framed certificate at September’s Town Council meeting.

Mr Barrigan said: “The secret is going to a very good garden centre and just really enjoying what we do. I do a lot of the planting and my brother does the upkeep. We’re really proud that we've achieved this. It means a lot to us.”

Town Mayor Tony Church said: “We were impressed by the superb floral dispays on show at the pub. These have generated many favourable comments from people and the Town Council felt that the Garnon Bushes was a worthy recipient of the Rosebowl award this year.”

St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival

There will be a fantastic display of over 60 beautifully decorated trees in the Church prepared by a range of schools, clubs, businesses, societies and local individuals.

There will also be craft stalls, tombola, bran tub and refreshments along with entertainment from children’s groups and other community groups throughout the weekend of 1st to 4th December 2017.

So come along and enjoy the spirit of Christmas and see the dazzling display of decorated Christmas trees whilst enjoying a hot drink (including mulled wine) and homemade cake.

What a truly wonderful way to start the Christmas season!

Local Groups can help us to support St Margaret’s

The Friends of St Margaret’s Hospital aim to support our local Hospital by purchasing vital items which the NHS cannot supply. In the first few months of this year we spent over £10,000 on equipment which wards and departments at the Epping Forest Unit had requested.

Large sums like these were replenished through the great support we have had from local people, particularly those who came to our two lunch events in spring and summer and from in memoriam gifts. But we also welcomed the help of St John’s Wives’ Group in Loughton who chose us as their 2016-17 charity and raised the amazing sum of £2720 in a variety of ways over the year. We were so grateful for this wonderful example of community involvement and wonder if any other local groups could help us support our local Hospital.

1st Theydon Garnon Scouts - Save the Hut!

1st Theydon Garnon Scout Group is a thriving group with sections for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, all of which are fully subscribed. The Group is based to the South of Epping in Fluxs Lane in an old building which was built around the 1960s and is now in such a rapid state of decline, the result could be the group ceasing to operate which would be a huge loss to the community.

The South of Epping is an area which does not currently have a modern community space suitable for residents, the area is also at the bottom of an extremely steep hill making it difficult for older people and parents with small children to easily access the halls in the town centre around ¾ mile away.

There is one other organisation that uses the hall, however, due to its current state of disrepair, it is unsuitable for use by many other community groups. Our aim is to repair the hall which will serve not only the scout group but would also attract many more community organisations, across all demographics, in the local area providing a much needed community hub for the local population.

The group is embarking upon an aggressive fund raising campaign over the next 18 months to secure £75,000 which is the expected cost of the repairs. Our current approach to fund raising is applying for grants to organisations such as the Big Lottery, Epping Town Council and Tesco. We are delighted that we came first in the recent Tesco Bags of Help vote and would like to thank everyone who voted for us with their blue tokens.

The Scout Section will be bag packing in the Epping Tesco store on Saturday 25th November in an effort to raise more funds and we would ask everyone to support us by coming along and having their bags packed.

We are at St Margaret’s every 2nd Thursday at 1.15pm and 4th Thursday at 10.30am for Wellbeing Groups where other carers join us for a chat, information or time out. We meet in the Orchard Day Unit for 2 hours but please come and go as you like.

Epping at the Movies, the town’s community cinema, will be hosting more of its popular screenings in November and December. New releases, family favourites and classic gems will all be shown on a big screen right in the centre of Epping, along with affordable refreshments and a crowd of friendly volunteers. Epping War Memorial

Epping War Memorial is soon to be cleaned and the lettering will be very carefully selectively re-etched and painted by a specialist craftsman.

Epping War Memorial is a Grade II Listed Building and Epping Town Council obtained Listed Building Consent to work on it.

This has now been granted so we can protect our precious names.

There are many people who contribute to making Epping a pleasant place to live and a nice place to visit. Among them are those who are dedicated to keeping our streets clean and tidy. Two such persons are Alan Porter and Sean Whitington. Alan operates the “Green Machine” whilst Sean wields a broom and, working as a team, they cover High Road and High Street, Hemnall St South, Palmers Hill, two car parks and several alleyways. Alan lives in Walthamstow, has been married for 25 years and has a son. In order to get to work on time, Alan gets up at 4.10am and travels by bus to Epping. Sean is also married with three children. The family home is in Brockley, South East London but Sean lives with his dad in Loughton during the week and goes home for the weekend. Sean drives to work and gets up at 5am.

Working as a team, they can regularly be seen working in the town and it is thanks to them and their dedication that our walkways are kept clean and tidy. At the time of writing, the worst time of the season, ie when the trees shed their leaves, has not really started.

However, when it is in full swing it gives Alan and Sean the annual monumental task of collecting them all up.

So, a big thank you to Alan and Sean for their hard work. There are other groups covering other parts of the Town and all are employed by Biffa. Whilst the efforts of Alan, Sean and their colleagues are greatly appreciated, it is also down to the citizens to use the many bins scattered around Town. We cannot stop leaves falling but we can control what humans do and that means avoiding dropping litter in the first place.

Monday Market -

Epping High Street

Most of us find it harder to get up in mornings now it is darker and colder. Our Monday market traders get up in the middle of the night to serve us all year round, but in winter it is extra hard for them. Many travel to us from a long way away.

Please visit and support them as we really do appreciate them being there.

It’s a Hat Trick for the Scouts

1st Theydon Garnon Scouts won the Royal Forest District Scout Night Hike Challenge, which took place through the night of the 7th October.

The scouts had to walk 10km through Epping Forest in the pitch black, navigating by using map and compass skills, to find seven checkpoints where they had to complete a variety of tasks. This was the 3rd year running 1st Theydon Garnon Scouts came first in this very popular event.

The winning team of Mia Roberts, Oliver Worrall and Harry Pigrum were led by patrol leader Dan Padian, they arrived at Gilwell Park in the early hours of Sunday morning where they camped for the remainder of the night. Scout leader Jacqui Mortimer was extremely proud of both of her teams who entered this Challenge.

Girlguiding Epping & Theydon District

The Guides of Epping have had yet another fantastic trip to Switzerland this year. They decided to make the trip of a lifetime and travel entirely by train involving eight changes altogether. Once there, they visited Our Chalet, a property owned by the worldwide Guiding organisation and a centre in Kandersteg, owned by our sibling movement The Scouting Organisation. Through exploring the local scenery and culture, the girls got to broaden their horizons, see beautiful sights and undertake the activities of a lifetime.

However, travelling abroad with Girlguiding is not just for the girls. As well as taking girls on trips to France, Switzerland and Iceland, to name but a few, Leaders in Epping have gone on trips to Mexico, India, Japan and the entirety of Northern Europe.

Girlguiding Epping & Theydon District would like to express our thoughts and condolences to the Hepton family for the loss of Sylvia Hepton. Her involvement in Guiding at a local level was immense and she’s a much-missed member, but most importantly a much-missed friend.

COMMUNITY POLICING WORKING PARTY

Epping Town Council have set up a Community Policing Working Group to try and help tackle antisocial behaviour in the Town. Councillors are joining together with local schools, the Police and other relevant community partners to try and find some good solutions to the increase in antisocial behaviour we have been experiencing in Epping.

CHRISTMAS DAY INVITATION FROM CHURCHES TOGETHER IN EPPING

Churches Together in Epping and District would like to invite anyone who will be alone on Christmas Day (and living in the Epping area) to join us for lunch at the Catholic Church Hall, Church Hill, Epping. The lunch will be a traditional family style Christmas meal. Transport can be provided and couples in special circumstances and carers with dependants are welcome.
