Message from the Mayor The

Porthcawl

Jazz

Welcome

Festival has been steadily

growing from strength to

strength over the past sixteen

years and each year it amazes me the

quality and talent of artists taking part.

This year is a departure from the past as the Festival is using a new venue and format at the Hi-Tide Inn.

JTQ will headline the start of the Festival at the Grand Pavilion.

Porthcawl is very proud of the way that the Jazz Festival has grown in stature over the years and is recognized as being one of the premier jazz festivals in Wales.

Enjoy the Festival, and indeed enjoy the pleasures of Porthcawl and I hope to see you next year.

Robert C. Lee- Mayor of Porthcawl

Director’s Greeting

Welcome to Porthcawl’s 2017 Big Seaside Jazz & Blues Weekender. This year we’ve made some major changes to the traditional Porthcawl Jazz Festival format. First up, the main centre for the 2017 event will be the Hi-Tide Inn at Coney Beach. This well established function suite offers two great performance rooms each having a capacity of around 200, 3 bars and a large lounge/dining area serving meals and drinks throughout the day and on into the evening. Our good friends at The Grand Pavilion continue to play an important role in the Festival by hosting the headline launch concert on Friday 7 April which features the James Taylor Quartet. Master Hammond organist James and his Quartet feature an astonishing array of instruments and cover a huge range of styles from jazz funk, fusion, groove and soul to rhythm and blues with a touch of classical thrown in for good measure. A unique experience not to be missed. The main theme of the Hi-Tide shows is a blend of favourite Festival bands who have wowed capacity audiences over the years and exciting new talents appearing at Porthcawl for the first time. With ticket prices from £5 per single show, £10 and £15 for day tickets or the full Monty – a Festival Patron ticket for £40 covering all concerts including James Taylor – value for money this year is better than ever. Especial thanks as ever go to our venues, artists, sponsors, patrons, volunteers and advertisers without whom the event could not take place. Enjoy a wonderful weekend.

All good wishes, Wayne Warlow – Festival Director

Friday 7th April

James Taylor Quartet

7.30pm - 9.30pm - Grand Pavillion In a career that has embraced jazz, soul, rock, funk and often tipped its hat to classic detective and action movie soundtracks, JTQ delivered their own filmic moment in 1997, contributing ‘Austin’s Theme’ to the score album for ‘Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.’

In 2007, the band completed their full-scale Motown tribute, ‘Don’t Mess With Mr. T,’ featuring guest vocalists Omar, Hil St. Soul and Donna Gardier. The same year brought both the spinoff project James Taylor’s 4th Dimension and a Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Award nomination for JTQ. That attraction to film music is deep-rooted in Taylor, who still marvels at such timeless images as the opening scene in ‘The Italian Job,’ where an Alfa Spider speeds through the Italian Alps to the accompaniment of Quincy Jones. “It’s the excitement of dealing with music that creates that sort of luxurious feeling.” he says. “And I find I don’t need to go to the ltalian Alps to do it.” So let’s hear it for a band well past their first quarter-century but still finding new challenges to meet, new peaks to climb. 2017 is looking like another vintage JTQ year. “What interests me at the moment is combining those two disparate directions of jazz and classical music,” enthuses Taylor, “because there is a point at which they meet, and exploiting that creates such an excitement on stage. There’s something to kick against.” The ensuing quarter-century has produced a bulging catalogue of remarkable albums and show-stopping gigs that continue to see JTQ in hot demand everywhere from Ronnie Scott’s to Rome.

Archbishop McGrath Jazz Ensemble / Bridgend County Youth Big Band

Friday 7th April

7.00pm - 9.00pm - Hi-Tide Inn

During the three years in which the Archbishop McGrath Jazz

Ensemble has appeared at the Porthcawl Jazz Festival, the

personnel has inevitably changed but the quality of performance has

remained as impressive as ever. Under Glyn Price, their founder Music Director

and former Head of Music at Archbishop McGrath High School, the Ensemble has developed into

a disciplined and highly effective team capable of interpreting to performance standards an ever-increasing range of

material. Their successful 2016 concert tour of the Lake Garda region of Italy was an important boost to the growing recognition of the Band as a fine example of the quality which 21st Century youth is capable of achieving.

The Bridgend County Youth Big Band was established some fifteen years ago by the gifted Bridgend tutorial duo of Carl

Collins and Dick Hamer. Their drive and enthusiasm led to the Band becoming an integral part of the County Youth Music establishment which has in recent years been strongly supported by the invaluable work of the Friends of Bridgend Youth

Music. The County Music Service under Head of Service Simon Gray, provides facilities for a regular Friday night rehearsal schedule throughout the academic year which has been extraordinarily successful in attracting over 250 pupils ranging

from primary level to the 18 plus age group. Under current Music Director Derek Mascall, graduate of Birmingham University and since 1973 a peripatetic string tutor in Bridgend schools, the Band has developed an eclectic repertoire of works which is guaranteed to enhance the feel good factor of the 2017 Porthcawl festival.

Saturday 8th April

Afternoon in Paris

1.00pm - 2.15pm - Hi-Tide Inn

Groups featuring two guitars and double bass are not exactly unknown in the jazz/blues/folk world, but when that combination is fronted by Susanna Warren on clarinet, bass clarinet and vocals, the description “unique” is entirely appropriate. Afternoon in Paris is a feel-good outfit whose repertoire is largely but by no means exclusively based on swing, latin, hot club, gypsy jazz, evergreens of the inter-war years and their own diverse musical backgrounds. Guitarist Andrew King and bassist Andy “Wal” Coughlin assist Susanna in embroidering performances with vocals delivered in several languages which conjure up images of the smokey jazz clubs of 1930s Paris and Hamburg and the grand restaurants of Europe and South America. The counterpoint of guitarist Jeremy Young completes a delicious musical mix which will launch Saturday’s Hi Tide Inn programme in great style. Sit back and enjoy or take a twirl around the designated dancing area. Either activity will bring complete satisfaction.

Rumblestrutters

5.00pm - 6.15pm - Hi-Tide Inn

In the comparatively short space of time which has elapsed since their formation, the Rumblestrutters have developed a formidable and ever-growing reputation for musical entertainment. Featuring Liam Ward, Jonathan Nicholas and Jon Toft, the Swansea-based acoustic trio’s vivid evocations of the bootleg liquor fuelled music of the 1920s and ‘30s American prohibition era have established them as being one of the most authentic and popular of roots bands. Following reaction to their stellar performances at such events as the Birmingham International Jazz Festival and the Gloucester Blues Festival, the Band seems destined to go national in the not too distant future. An appearance at the 2017 Brecon Jazz Festival is planned which, together with a new management structure, should help to ensure that the momentum generated by high profile bookings such as Porthcawl 2017 is maintained.

The Graham Watkins Quartet featuring Clare Hingott 3.00pm - 4.15pm - Hi-Tide Inn

Saturday 8th April

This year’s Festival helps to mark the centenary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald, so the appearance once more of chanteuse

extraordinaire Clare Hingott as an integral part of the Graham Watkins Quartet is particularly relevant. In addition to Ella

specials, the best of the Great American Song Book, jazz classics and contemporary female jazz items will again be framed

within Graham’s expert and inventive arrangements which have become such a hallmark of the Quartet’s performances.

Undoubtedly the coolest and most sophisticated of South Wales jazz groups, the Graham Watkins Quartet looks forward

to sharing their performance with new audiences at the Hi-Tide Inn as well as the enthusiastic fan club which habitually follows them around the circuit.

Saturday 8th April Room to Groove

7.30pm - 9.30pm - Hi-Tide Inn

Filling the stage on Saturday night, the eight strong Room to Groove covers virtually every form of jazz, blues, recent pop

and more. Band members are equally at home with material ranging from New Orleans traditional to Leonard Cohen

and they present it all with an infectious enthusiasm. Between them, Steve Shipman, Allan Jones, Peter Jones, Mal Grint, Rachel Cooper, Clive Carpenter, Ian Cooper and Gerhard Kress provide innumerable vocals and perform on guitar, bass, drum kit, cajun drum, congas, bongos, assorted percussion, ukulele, harmonica, fiddle and washboard. They recently delighted audiences at Cardiff’s Cafe Jazz and seem set fair to repeat that response at Porthcawl on Saturday evening. Steve ‘Shippy’ Shipman – engine room - snare, cymbals, harmonica and shades Allan ‘Lefty’ Jones – acoustic rock guitar, vocals and a smile

Peter ‘Django’Jones – gypsy swing jazz guitar, the “godfather”

Mal ‘Deano’ Grint – chief crooner, guitar and general bon homme Rachel Cooper – cajon drum, percussion, ukulele and vocals Clive Carpenter – congas, bongos, ukulele and hat

Ian Cooper – scouse-mouse, bass at the double, guitar, vocals Gerhard Kress – fiddle, washboard and hat

Sunday 9th April

Li Harding / Gary Phillips Quartet

1.00pm - 3.00pm - Hi-Tide Inn If you’re looking for a female jazz and blues singer in

Wales then one name always springs to mind. Li Harding

grew up in that “most cosmopolitan square mile of Europe,” the

Cardiff docklands area known worldwide as Tiger Bay, also

celebrated as being the birthplace of Shirley Bassey. Now totally

redeveloped and known for fine dining, leisure activities, the Millennium Centre

and the Welsh Assembly building, the Bay of Li’s childhood was a hotbed of jazz, blues, folk and world music which heavily influenced her as a child and has continued to do throughout her career.

Co Leader of the Quartet, Swansea A Team guitarist Gary Phillips offers the wide experience and expertise of a long career

which has seen him touring Europe with some of the leading American and British artists. His regular collaboration with Li always results in Rhythm and Blues at its best.

John Stark’s Mainstreamers 3.00pm - 4.15pm - Hi-Tide Inn

One of the longest serving of Cardiff jazz drummers, John Stark’s technique and “swingability” remain stable in a constantly changing musical world. He works regularly with a number of other bands but performs most of his jazz engagements leading his Mainstreamers featuring John Mills on piano, Alan Johnson on guitar and Roger Gape on vocals. The name of the band defines the style of music which forms the bulk of their repertoire and hopefully also hints at John’s determination that his approach to jazz should generate equal measures of quality, fun and enjoyment.

Liberty Street Jazz Band

5.30pm - 6.45pm - Hi-Tide Inn

Sunday 9th April

The Liberty Street Jazz Band is one of the longest established and most popular New Orleans style bands around. Their

impressive gig list takes them to all parts of South Wales, the South West and the M4 corridor as far as Henley-on-Thames where they are regularly featured on the popular New Orleans Riverboat. They have become firm favourites at successive Porthcawl Jazz Festivals and always look forward to re-establishing their special rapport with the event. Led by Marcus on

cornet, John, Simon, Graham, Dewi and Richard never fail to please with a varied programme centred on the traditional rags, shouts and blues as played by jazz’s founding pioneers.

Sunday 9th April

The Fraccalvierri/ Long Quintet

7.00pm - 9.00pm - Hi-Tide Inn

Drawing heavily on the cool West Coast sound of the 50's and 60's, this new co-led quintet, featuring a front line of Alto

Saxophone and the rarely heard Vibraphone, takes it inspiration from the great figures of that era to bring you a clean, straight ahead mainstream sound. From tender ballads to blistering bop, the group covers a wide range of repertoire

ranging from the 20's right up to the present day, taking in a variety of styles and moods along the way. The quintet is

made up of some of South Wales’ most in demand players who between them have performed and recorded with many

of the leading figures in British Jazz. Carlo Fraccalvieri (Alto Sax), Ashley John Long (Vibraphone), Dave Jones (Piano), Donnie Joe Sweeny (Bass), Ian Poole (Drums), combine to form one of the most gifted of current British jazz ensembles.

Madi Stimpson Quartet

4.15pm - 5.30pm - Hi-Tide Inn Although still a young man, Madi has an eviable reputation for being an exciting

and eclectic guitarist, composer, singer and songwriter. Tending to emphasise

gypsy swing, bebop, ragtime, country picking and bluegrass, his work has also been influenced by Charlie Parker, Scott Joplin, J S Bach and W A Mozart. Never

formally tutored, he learned his trade during lengthy travels through mainland

Europe and Ireland, jamming with local musicians, busking and playing solo gigs in pubs and cafes. Now performing regularly throughout England but

concentrating on the Midlands and Welsh borders, his Quartet is sure to have much to contribute to the success of our 2017 Festival.
